WOW. ALL RIGHT.

[1. REGULAR BOARD MEETING CALL TO ORDER - 5:30 PM]

GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.

WELCOME TO OUR MARCH 28TH BOARD MEETING.

WE ARE GOING TO START THINGS OFF WITH THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

SO IF YOU'D PLEASE RISE AND JOIN ME.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. NEXT WE HAVE OUR LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT THAT'LL BE LED BY ERIKA COX.

I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GEOGRAPHICAL REGION OF CAMAS IS LOCATED ON THE ANCESTRAL AND TERRITORIAL LANDS OF THE CHINOOK AND COWLITZ PEOPLE, AND THAT THE CHINOOK ARE STILL FIGHTING TO BE A FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBE ON THEIR OWN LAND.

THANKS, ERICA. I DO ALSO JUST WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT TRACEY MALONE IS UNDER THE WEATHER TONIGHT, SO SHE WILL NOT BE JOINING US.

SO WE'LL GO AHEAD AND EXCUSE HER NEXT ITEM TO ON OUR AGENDA TO A OUR SD 112 ART AWARD

[2. MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD(S)]

WINNERS. MR. HOOD, WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL US MORE? I'LL TELL YOU A LITTLE. OOH, THAT'S KIND OF LOUD.

SORRY. YES.

WE HAVE SOME WONDERFUL AWARD WINNERS TONIGHT.

AND I THINK GAIL SAID THAT THEIR TEACHER, MRS. SCOTT, I BELIEVE, IS HERE.

WHY DON'T YOU COME ON UP? THIS IS THIS IS THE HARD WORK OF YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS.

WE GOT TO VISIT MRS. SCOTT, AND I'LL TALK MORE ABOUT THAT FOR OUR BOARD VISITS ON FRIDAY.

BUT SHE WAS SO GRACIOUS TO LET US IN TO HER CLASS, AND IT MADE ME WANT TO DO ART.

OH, THANK YOU.

GOOD AFTERNOON. MY NAME IS ANNE SCOTT, AND I'M ONE OF THE ONE OF FOUR ART TEACHERS AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL. I FEEL VERY PRIVILEGED TO WORK WITH OUR STUDENTS AND BE A PART OF THE STAFF. PERSONALLY, THIS IS ACTUALLY I'M A TEMPORARY TEACHER AND SO HE IS THE GUY THAT I REPLACED, WENT ON SABBATICAL AND HE'S HAVING A VERY GOOD YEAR JUST LIKE I AM.

AND SO I'M I'M EXCITED THAT HE DID PUT HIS RESIGNATION IN.

AND HOPEFULLY I'LL BE ABLE TO BE PART OF THE STAFF ONGOING IN THE FUTURE, BECAUSE I WILL SAY THAT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS BY FAR THE MOST PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT I'VE BEEN WORKING IN IN MY 20 YEARS OF EDUCATION AS A AS A SPECIAL ED TEACHER, AS A AS AN ADMINISTRATOR, AS AN ART TEACHER.

AND I FEEL SO, SO PRIVILEGED TO BE HERE WORKING WITH THESE STUDENTS WHO ARE ALWAYS COME TO SCHOOL READY TO LEARN.

WE HAVE CERAMICS FROM ZERO HOUR ALL THE WAY THROUGH SIXTH PERIOD AND THEN CONFERENCE IS A HALF HOUR AT THE END OF THE DAY AND CONFERENCE IS ALWAYS PACKED WITH KIDS AS WELL. AND OUR KIDS COME TO CLASS.

THEY'RE VERY COLLEGIATE.

THEY THEY GET IN THE SCHOOL, THEY GET IN THE CLASSROOM, THEY GO GET THEIR STUFF, THEY GET TO WORK. I MEAN, IT'S JUST SUCH, SUCH A REALLY GREAT AND REFRESHING EXPERIENCE TO HAVE KIDS REALLY WANT TO LEARN AND WANT TO WANT TO LEARN.

AND THEY'RE CURIOUS AND THEY'RE CREATIVE AND AND KIDS THAT I WOULD THINK THAT, OH, THAT KID WHAT'S THAT KID GOING TO CREATE? AND THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW, HE'S MAKING A PINCH POT WITH LEGS THAT ARE GOING ALL OVER IT. AND I'M THINKING, YOU'RE GOING TO BE AN ENGINEER.

HE'S THERE. YEAH. YOU KNOW, YOU CAN JUST SORT OF TELL WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO IN THE FUTURE BY WHAT HOW THEY EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN THE ART AND WITH THE KIDS NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE ART OR SCHOOL FOR A YEAR AND A HALF, TO HAVE THIS WORK COME OUT OF FIRST SEMESTER WITH MISS KEITH CLASSES AND MY CLASSES.

AND THEN OF COURSE, WE HAVE TWO OTHER TEACHERS THAT DIDN'T SUBMIT WORK FOR THE SD ART AWARDS. SO HIDING ARE LIKE WE'RE USING EVERY SINGLE OPPORTUNITY TO GET OUR STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW.

AND WE'RE FORTUNATE THROUGH THE SD ART AWARDS THAT OUR KIDS GOT FIVE OR SIX AWARDS.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW. I CAN'T EVEN CUT IN MY HAND.

HOW MANY DO WE HAVE? SIX AND THEN TWO OF THEM ARE GOING ON TO STATE.

AND SO MAX AND TRINITY ARE GOING THEIR PIECES ARE GOING ON TO STATE.

IT'S JUST VERY, VERY IT'S JUST JUST SO WONDERFUL AND I'M SO PROUD.

SO CAN I BRING THE KIDS UP HERE? SO, COME ON, KIDS, DON'T BE SHY.

OKAY. OH, YOU ARE HERE.

TRINITY, TRINITY AND TALI.

SO THIS IS. TRINITY, AKA TALLEY, PETTY AND DIANA.

HOW DO YOU SAY YOUR LAST NAME? KATSUMATA KATSUMATA.

AND THEN MAX.

MAX ONG.

SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.

DO YOU GIRLS WANT IT? DOES ANYBODY WANT TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT CLASS OR ART OR WHAT IT'S LIKE TO SORT OF HAVE HAVE THAT PERIOD OF THAT ONE TIME, YOU KNOW, 45, 50 MINUTES A DAY TO SORT OF RELAX

[00:05:02]

YOUR MIND AND WHAT THAT MIGHT DO FOR FOR YOU JUST.

I'D JUST LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY THAT YOU GIVE US EVERY DAY JUST TO, LIKE, EXPLORE, LIKE, THE ART THAT WE WANT TO CREATE INSTEAD OF, LIKE, GIVING US BOUNDARIES. AND LIKE, BOUNDARIES ARE GREAT WHEN WE'RE LEARNING NEW THINGS.

BUT JUST LIKE, I REALLY APPRECIATE, LIKE, THE CREATIVITY THAT WE GET TO, LIKE, JUST LIKE WE GET TO DO WHATEVER WE WANT.

AND IT'S REALLY FUN. AND ALSO JUST LIKE, I FEEL LIKE I'M IN MY SECOND SEMESTER OF CERAMICS RIGHT NOW AND LIKE, LIKE YOU PUSH ME A LOT IN MY PIECE AND STUFF AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT BECAUSE IT MAKES ME WANT TO LIKE PERFECT IT MORE SO.

I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THAT.

THANKS. WE DO HAVE YOU KNOW, WE HAVE SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS AND RUBRICS, BUT I DO ALLOW A LOT OF CREATIVITY WITHIN THOSE BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT.

I MEAN, STUDENTS ARE EXPRESSING IDEAS AND THEY'RE THROUGH THEIR VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS AND 3D COMMUNICATIONS.

AND IT'S JUST IT'S AMAZING TO SEE WHAT THEIR STUDENTS IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE DOING.

AND I WILL I'M GOING TO GO BACK TO JUST LIKE BEING IN CAMPUS.

I'M SO I'M REALLY EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR WORLD AND OUR COMMUNITY.

I USED TO ALWAYS WONDER LIKE, OH, MY GOODNESS, WHAT'S, WHAT'S THE FUTURE LIKE? AND I CAME HERE, IT'S LIKE, WOW, I'M BLOWN AWAY.

I'M JUST NOT SAYING THAT.

IT'S LIKE, FOR REAL.

PEOPLE KEEP SAYING, HOW'S YOUR YEAR? THAT'S THE BEST EVER.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? IT'S BECAUSE OF YOU KIDS.

YOU BRING MY YOU BRIGHTEN MY DAY EVERY DAY.

SO THANK YOU.

ALL RIGHT.

YEAH. COREY.

COREY.

OH, BEAUTIFUL.

WOW. I THINK WE'RE GOING TO GET SOME GET SOME PICTURES OF THEIR ARTWORK UP HERE ON THE SCREEN.

I KNOW WHEN WE WERE AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, WE GOT TO SEE THESE IN PERSON, WHICH WAS AMAZING. SO.

YES.

CONGRATULATIONS. SO I DIDN'T GET TO I DIDN'T GET ASKED WHILE YOU WERE UP HERE.

SO NOW THE ONES THAT ARE GOING ON TO STATE, WHEN IS STATE? HOW DOES THAT WORK? OKAY, WELL, LET US KNOW.

OKAY. SO FOR THOSE AT HOME, STAY TUNED.

WE'LL LET YOU KNOW. ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

ALL RIGHT. WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON NOW TO ITEM THREE ON OUR AGENDA.

[3. STUDENT REPORTS]

WE HAVE A COUPLE OF STUDENT REPORTS.

LET'S GO AHEAD AND START WITH THE REPORT FROM CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

HI. I'M KYLIE ZIEGLER, AND I'M THE VICE PRESIDENT AS VICE PRESIDENT.

PRESIDENT AT CAMAS.

HI, I'M BRYN NYGAARD, AND I'M THE ACP PRESIDENT AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

AND TODAY WE'RE HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT WHAT STUDENT LEADERSHIP GOT GOING ON AND HOW WE'RE INTERACTING WITH THE SCHOOL.

SO WE'VE COMING BACK FROM A YEAR ONLINE AND STUFF.

WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET A LOT MORE LIKE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT AND STUDENT VOICE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL.

SO I THINK ABOUT MAYBE A MONTH AGO WE STARTED DOING STUDENT SURVEYS TO GET STUDENTS FEEDBACK ON JUST KIND OF WHAT'S GOING ON IN SCHOOL THAT US KIDS IN LEADERSHIP MIGHT BE MISSING. AND SO IT'S A CONTINUING PROJECT.

AND EVENTUALLY WE'RE GOING TO WRITE A LETTER JUST TO TALK ABOUT WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON IN THE SCHOOL AND SHARE IT.

YEAH. AND SO THAT SURVEY INCLUDES THINGS THEY LIKE, SOMETHING THEY MIGHT WANT TO SEE IMPROVE TEACHERS THAT ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.

IT JUST KIND OF ENCOMPASSES EVERYTHING BECAUSE WITH A SCHOOL POPULATION THAT'S SO

[00:10:04]

LARGE, IT'S OFTENTIMES HARD TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THEIR VOICE IS HEARD. SO THIS PROJECT THAT WE HAVE GOING ON HOPEFULLY, YOU KNOW, CAN GET THE MOST INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE.

WE ALSO, THROUGH ADVISORY HAVE BEEN GETTING SOME FEEDBACK ON THE EQUITY AND DIVERSITY LESSONS THAT WE'VE BEEN PUSHING OUT, AND THAT'S BEEN REALLY PRODUCTIVE.

SO THE NEXT THING THAT WE HAVE COMING UP THAT'S REAL BIG IS OUR ASSEMBLIES AND PROM.

SO WE'RE DOING THREE DIFFERENT ASSEMBLIES TO KEEP OUR GYM AT LOWER CAPACITY.

SINCE THE MASS MANDATES ARE LIFTED, WE STILL KIND OF WANT TO BE SAFE, THOUGH.

SO WE'LL HAVE JUNIOR AND SENIOR FOR PROM AND THEN AFTER WE'LL HAVE SOPHOMORE AND FRESHMAN ASSEMBLIES AND WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

I FEEL LIKE ASSEMBLIES GET SCHOOL SPIRIT GOING AND THEY REALLY ENCOURAGE CONNECTION BETWEEN PEERS BECAUSE YOU COME TOGETHER AT THIS EVENT AND YOU CAN FEEL THE ENERGY.

AND I FEEL SO EXCITED FOR THE SOPHOMORES AND FRESHMEN WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN IN AN ENVIRONMENT LIKE THAT TO BE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME, BECAUSE IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL.

AND THAT'S IT.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

WERE THERE ANY ANY QUESTIONS FROM ANYONE ON THE BOARD? NO, NO, I'M JUST CHECKING.

I'M JUST CHECKING. OKAY.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

BEFORE WE DO BEFORE WE DO STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE, I WAS TOLD WE DO HAVE A REPORT FROM LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

SO WE'LL GO AHEAD AND HAVE THOSE REPRESENTING LIBERTY COME ON UP.

ALL RIGHT. HELLO? AZARIA SAID FEBRUARY 28TH.

MY NAME IS JACKSON TAYLOR, AND I HAVE THE HONOR AND PRIVILEGE OF BEING THE ACP PRESIDENT AT LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR THE 2021 AND 2022 SCHOOL YEAR.

FOR THIS PRESENTATION, I'M GOING TO GO OVER UPCOMING EVENTS THAT WILL BE GOING ON AT LIBERTY AS OUR YEAR COMES TO AN END.

SO WHAT WE'RE DOING TO CELEBRATE THE END OF THE YEAR IS WE'RE GOING TO BE HAVING OUR POP PARTY. THAT'S KIND OF OUR END OF YEAR CELEBRATION WITH, YOU KNOW, FOR ALL GRADES.

WE'LL HAVE THE END OF YOUR TALENT SHOW.

WE MAY HAVE TO DO A MODIFIED VERSION OF THIS JUST SO WE DON'T HAVE ANY BIG MASS COVID OUTBREAKS. WE MAY HAVE LIKE AN EIGHTH GRADE ONE AND THEN A SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADE ONE.

AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE OUR SCHOOL PLAY, ALL OF OUR JUNIOR.

IT WILL BE PERFORMED APRIL 29TH AND APRIL 30TH AT THE GARVEY THEATER, AS WE JUST RECENTLY APPROVED THOSE BUDGETS FOR THE PROPS THAT THEY WILL BE USING.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO RIGHT NOW, ONE OF THE THINGS I HAVE ULTIMATELY STRIVE TO DO THIS SCHOOL YEAR IS TO VISIT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS BECAUSE THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THAT I'VE GONE TO, HOW ABOUT IN CLACKAMAS, HAVE HAD SUCH A HUGE IMPACT ON ME AS A LEADER.

SO I JUST WANT TO GO AND GIVE THAT BACK.

SO WE'LL BE GOING TO WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13TH, THE WEDNESDAY, RIGHT AFTER SPRING BREAK.

AND OUR GOAL IS ULTIMATELY TO INTRODUCE LEADERSHIP TO TO STUDENTS AT A YOUNG AGE.

AND THOSE STUDENTS WILL GET OPPORTUNITIES TO TALK WITH THEIR ASB SENATORS THAT ARE GOING AS WELL AS ALL FOUR OFFICERS, ME INCLUDED.

AND WE WILL ALSO BE OFFERING AN INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY THAT WILL BE OFFERED OR THAT WILL INTRODUCE PROBLEM SOLVING AS A GROUP, SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO DO.

AS YOU PROGRESS THROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING TO RECOGNIZE ALL CULTURES AT LIBERTY IS HANGING FLAGS IN THE COMMENTS. RECENTLY WE PURCHASED A BIG PACK OF ALL THE UNITED NATIONS FLAGS, AND SO WE'RE GOING TO BE GATHERING FEEDBACK ON WHERE STUDENTS ARE COMING FROM AND WE'RE GOING TO PUT THOSE FLAGS IN OUR COMMONS.

WE HAVE OUR PRIDE BANNER WITH ALL THE LANGUAGES SPOKEN AT LIBERTY POSTED AT THE FRONT ENTRANCE OF THE SCHOOL.

JUST SO WHEN STUDENTS WALK IN, THEY CAN SEE THEIR BACKGROUND AND THEY CAN SEE THEIR VOICE THERE. AND WE JUST REALLY AIM TO SEE AND VALUE THE HERITAGE OF STUDENTS AND THE FAMILIES AT LIBERTY.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'VE ALREADY STATED I WANT TO DO.

ONE OF THE SPIRIT DAYS THAT I AM VERY EXCITED FOR IS THIS FRIDAY, APRIL 1ST, WHERE STUDENTS WILL BRING ANYTHING BUT A BACKPACK.

WITH SOME RESTRICTIONS.

AS LONG AS IT CAN FIT ON THE BUS.

WE'RE GOOD. SO AS LONG AS IT'S SOMEWHAT CLEAN, WE DON'T WANT ANYBODY BRINGING IN, LIKE, MOWERS.

YOU KNOW, DIRTY GARBAGE, GARBAGE CANS, YOU KNOW, THINGS LIKE THAT.

I'LL PROBABLY BRING LIKE A VERY SMALL SOCCER GOAL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, OR I'LL GRAB A KAYAK. ONE OF THE.

[00:15:05]

SO NOW MOVING TO THE ATHLETIC PART OF LIBERTY, WE HAVE OUR SPRING SPORTS STARTING UP FOOTBALL, GIRLS, BASKETBALL AND GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY.

THESE SPORTS WILL BE STARTING APRIL 11TH, THE MONDAY RIGHT AFTER SPRING BREAK.

WE ALSO HAD A WRESTLING WHICH JUST FINISHED THEIR SEASON WITH THE DISTRICT TOURNAMENT LAST WEEKEND. THEY DID NOT WIN, BUT THEY STILL DID GOOD.

AND I'M STILL PROUD OF THEM.

WE ALSO HAD OUR COED VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT LAST FRIDAY.

IT WAS SO MUCH FUN.

WE HAD SIX TEAMS. WE HAD CONCESSIONS.

WE HAD REFS. I WORKED CONCESSIONS.

I THINK MY FRIENDS AND I SPENT THE MOST MONEY ON CONCESSIONS.

I'M NOT GOING TO LEAVE ANY EXTRA COMMENT ON THAT.

WE HAD, AS I STATED, I THINK WE HAD SIX TEAMS. I THINK THE TEAM THAT WON WAS LIKE WHITE LIGHTNING OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

BUT YEAH, STUDENTS BEFOREHAND, ORGANIZED TEAMS, A LOT OF THEM HAD LIKE FANS AND STUFF.

SOME PEOPLE EVEN MADE POSTERS SUPPORTING THEIR TEAMS. YOU KNOW, THOSE TEAMS SHOWED UP IN MATCHING SHIRTS AND STUFF.

I WANT TO ADD ONE EXTRA COMMENT.

BACK TO THE BACKPACK DAY.

ONE OF THE INTENTIONS THAT I HAVE HAD WITH THIS, THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE ONLY WAYS THAT WE'RE GOING TO GET TEENAGERS TO ACTUALLY CLEAN UP THEIR STUFF.

BECAUSE IF STUDENTS HEAR THAT, WHAT THEY HAVE TO BRING HAS TO BE CLEAN.

I EXPECT THEM TO GO AND LIKE CLEAN UP SOME OF THEIR STUFF.

SO REALLY HELPING OUT THE PARENTS ON THAT ONE.

RIGHT. WE HAVE OUR PAINT YOUR PET EVENT COMING UP APRIL 22ND WHERE PEOPLE SUBMIT A PHOTO OF THEIR PET AND THEN THEY WILL RECEIVE A COPIED VERSION OF THEM FOR FOR THEM TO PAINT IT. WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS, I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO BE GOING AND PHYSICALLY PAINTING YOUR PETS.

FORTUNATELY, I STAND CORRECTED.

WE HAVE OUR FIELD TRIP.

SIXTH GRADE WILL BE GOING TO AMC.

THAT WILL BE FRIDAY, MAY 20TH.

THIS IS GOING TO BE THE FIRST FIELD TRIP THAT WE HAVE HAD AT LIBERTY SINCE COVID STARTED. WELL, I'M NOT GOING.

I'M STILL SUPER EXCITED FOR THEM.

I'VE BEEN TO AMC A FEW TIMES.

IT'S A GREAT PLACE. A FEW OF THE EXHIBITS THAT THEY'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO INCLUDE, LEONARDO DA VINCI.

THEY'LL HAVE AN INTERACTIVE SCIENCE BASED JOURNAL EXHIBIT AND A PLANETARIUM SHOW.

SOME OF THE INCLUSIONARY PRACTICES THAT WE WERE WORKING ON.

THERE'S SOME OF OUR LIFE SKILL.

SOME OF THE STUDENTS FROM A LIFE SCHOOL PROGRAM HAVE BEEN GETTING INVOLVED WITH SCHOOL CLUBS, SPECIFICALLY THEIR OWN NEEDS, WHICH IS AH, WHICH IS LIBERTY'S LIKE NEWS CHANNEL THAT WE BROADCAST EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL DAY.

AND AT THIS POINT THEY'VE BECOME REGULAR NEWS ANCHORS BEING ABLE TO SHARE JOKES AND OTHER FUN STUFF.

AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD.

GO AHEAD, CONNIE.

I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO BE HOSTING THE OSCARS.

HE'S GOOD. HE'S GOOD WITH A MIC AND AND LET IT BE KNOWN, PRINCIPAL MUELLER, ANYBODY WHO SHOWS UP ON FRIDAY WITH A KAYAK.

THAT'S ALL CONNIE'S IDEA.

JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW.

SO, ALL RIGHT, WE GET TO THAT ONE MORE.

HEY, THAT WORKS. STAFF ROOM TREATS.

YEAH. OKAY. ALL RIGHT, JACKSON, THANK YOU.

NEXT, WE HAVE OUR REPORT FROM OUR STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERS.

HI. I'M TEAGAN SIMMS AND I'M A SOPHOMORE AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

AND I'M MADDIE WILLIAMS, AND I'M ALSO A SOPHOMORE AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON RECENTLY WAS CREATING NEW LESSONS ON SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

AND A FEW MONTHS AGO WE WENT OVER THE RESULTS OF THE PANORAMA SURVEYS THAT STUDENTS FILLED OUT. AND WE ARE LOOKING AT THE DATA AND TRYING TO IDENTIFY THINGS THAT STUDENTS ARE STRUGGLING WITH. AND SO WE USE THESE RESULTS TO GUIDE NEW LESSONS THAT WE'RE CREATING WITH JENNIFER MCMILLAN.

AND ALONG WITH THESE NEW LESSONS, WE'RE ALSO WORKING TO CONVEY TO STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE PANORAMA SURVEYS, BECAUSE SOMETIMES STUDENTS DON'T PUT IN THEIR FULL EFFORT TO FILL THEM OUT. SO WE WANT TO SHOW THEM THAT IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT CAN GUIDE NEW LESSONS IN THE FUTURE.

SO THE NEXT THING THAT WE TACKLED WAS OUR EQUITY LESSONS.

THESE WERE PUSHED OUT TO BOTH OUR HIGH SCHOOL AND OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, I BELIEVE.

SO AFTER PUSHING THESE OUT, WE DECIDED TO GO TO OUR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE AND PRESENT THEM AND WALK THEM THROUGH THIS LESSON AS WELL.

WE DID THIS ONE IN JUST PRESENTATION WITH SLIDES FORMAT, WHICH WE FOUND TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE THAN THE WEBINAR WE DID IN SCHOOLS, ESPECIALLY SINCE OUR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE WAS SO WILLING TO HAVE DISCUSSIONS AND BE OPEN TO TALK ABOUT IT, WHICH WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE SINCE SOME OF OUR STUDENTS HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A HARDER TIME OPENING UP, UNDERSTANDABLY.

BUT THAT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE AND MADE US FEEL GOOD ABOUT WHAT WE WERE DOING AND FELT LIKE IT WAS PRODUCTIVE.

[00:20:01]

SO THE NEXT THING WE DID FOLLOWING THESE EQUITY LESSONS WAS WE HAD FOCUS GROUPS WHERE WE HAD STUDENTS MEET WITH STAFF MEMBERS AT THE STAFF MEETING ON EARLY RELEASE WEDNESDAY.

AND SO THESE STUDENTS CHOSE TO STAY AFTER SCHOOL AND MEET WITH GROUPS OF STAFF MEMBERS TO GET THEIR FEELINGS ON HOW THE LESSONS WENT WITHIN THEIR ADVISORY CLASSES.

SO OUR GENERAL CONSENSUS CONSENSUS THAT WE CAME UP WITH WAS THAT WE WANTED MORE LESSONS ON THIS TOPIC TO GO FURTHER IN DEPTH AND GET STUDENTS EVEN MORE INVOLVED AND UNDERSTANDING. AND WE ALSO WANTED A WAY TO GET THOSE STUDENTS MORE INVOLVED IN THE LESSONS BECAUSE A LOT OF ADVISORY CLASSES WERE SILENT AND IT WAS A HARD THING TO GET CONVERSATIONS GOING, WHICH AGAIN IS UNDERSTANDABLE.

IT'S A HARD TOPIC, BUT WE REALLY WANT OUR STUDENTS TO FEEL COMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT THIS IN A SAFE PLACE WITH THEIR CLASSES.

AND THEN BEFORE WE END, WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE NEXT STEPS WE'RE WORKING ON AS A GROUP. SO ONE THING WE'VE BEEN CREATING IS WE'RE TRYING TO COLLABORATE WITH WOODBURN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO WE'RE BASICALLY GOING TO BRING IN LIKE CHILDREN'S BOOKS ON TOPICS SURROUNDING EQUITY AND INCLUSION.

AND THEN WE'RE PLANNING ON READING, HAVING HIGH SCHOOLERS READ THESE TO THE STUDENTS AND FACILITATING DISCUSSIONS WITH THEM ON THESE TOPICS.

AND SO WE'RE CURRENTLY JUST IN THE PLANNING STAGE OF THAT.

WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AT WOODBURN AND THEN WE'RE HOPING TO GET THAT STARTED BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

AND THIS WILL JUST BE A PILOT AT WOODBURN.

AND THEN WE'RE HOPING WITH THIS WE CAN BUILD OFF OF THAT IN OTHER YEARS AND CREATE MORE LESSONS LIKE THIS THAT WILL JUST CREATE MORE INCLUSION AND A BETTER SENSE OF COMMUNITY IN THE DISTRICT. SO DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? OKAY. THANK YOU.

NO QUESTION. BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING TO CAC.

CONNIE AND I WERE BOTH THERE.

AND TO LEAD A GROUP OF ADULTS IN THE WAY THAT YOU DID ON SUBJECT MATTER THAT YOU DID WAS REALLY CALLED UPON YOU TO USE ALL OF YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND YOU SHINED.

AND I JUST THOUGHT SO HIGHLY OF YOU LEADING THOSE ADULTS THAT NIGHT.

AND I WAS SO APPRECIATIVE OF YOU AND HOW YOU MANEUVERED THAT.

SO REALLY GREAT JOB AND THANK YOU BECAUSE IT WAS A REALLY IMPORTANT CONVERSATION FOR THAT ROOM TO HAVE. THANK YOU.

THANKS SO MUCH.

OKAY. THAT SHOULD BE IT FOR OUR STUDENT REPORTS.

JUST DOUBLE CHECKING. THERE AREN'T ANY OTHER STUDENTS OUT THERE.

OKAY. WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON TO ITEM FOUR ON THE AGENDA, WHICH IS BOARD COMMUNICATIONS.

[4. BOARD COMMUNICATIONS]

IF ANYBODY HAS ANYTHING THAT THEY WANTED TO SHARE OR TALK ABOUT.

I WAS JUST GOING TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO SOME OF THE PRINCIPALS WHOSE SCHOOLS WE WERE AT TODAY, BUT THEY BOLTED OUT THE DOOR TOO QUICKLY.

BUT WE WENT TO BAYLOR AND HAYES AND LIBERTY TODAY.

AND I KNOW SOME OF YOU WENT TO.

A SLEW OF SCHOOLS ON FRIDAY.

BUT IT'S JUST GREAT TO BE BACK IN CLASSROOMS AND IN SCHOOLS AND SEE THE KIDS AND.

WATCH THE LEARNING HAPPEN.

THE PRINCIPALS ARE ALL ASKING, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE? WE'RE LIKE, ANYTHING.

SHOW US ANYTHING.

WE'LL GO OUT TO RECESS.

BUT IT WAS REALLY GREAT. AND I.

ESPECIALLY GOING INTO MISS GIBSON'S CLASS, WHERE SHE HAD THEM TALKING ABOUT WHAT DO YOU THINK A SCHOOL BOARD DOES AND HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK THEY MAKE BEING BOARD MEMBERS? AND THEY WERE SHOCKED. THEY'RE LIKE, OH, WHAT? LIKE NONE.

BUT IT WAS GREAT. IT WAS.

AND TO HAVE DR.

ANZALONE WITH US TODAY WAS ALSO AWESOME.

THANKS. THANKS TO OUR SCHOOLS.

GREAT. YEAH, I WOULD I WOULD ALSO JUST ADDING TO THE THE SCHOOL VISITS WE DID.

SO LAST WEEK, DOUG AND TRACEY AND I WERE ABLE TO DO WHAT WE DID FIVE THAT DAY.

THAT WAS, THAT WAS A BIG DAY. SO WE WENT TO HAYS, WE WENT TO WOODBURN, CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, MS. LAKE, AND THEN THE HEIGHTS LEARNING CENTER.

AND SO, YEAH, IT'S GREAT TO BE GETTING BACK OUT IN THERE AND TRYING TO TRYING TO GET OUR FACES IN THOSE BUILDINGS AND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON.

SO THAT'S BEEN GREAT.

I DID WANT TO ADD TO THE DOUG AND I HAD A MEETING ON MARCH 21ST WITH THE STATE AUDITORS TO GO OVER OUR ANNUAL AUDIT REVIEW.

IT WAS A CLEAN AUDIT, SO THAT'S GREAT.

AND AND SO THANK YOU TO JASON AND HIS WHOLE TEAM FOR FOR ALWAYS KEEPING A GOOD ACCOUNT OF ALL OF THE MONEY, WHICH IS IMPORTANT.

IN FACT, I KNOW THE THE AUDITORS SPECIFICALLY CALLED OUT IN THE MEETING THAT THEY WERE IMPRESSED WITH OUR DISTRICT'S ACCOUNTING FOR ALL OF THE ESSER FUNDS AND THAT NOT EVERY DISTRICT WAS AS PRECISE AS WE WERE IN IN THE WAY THAT WE WERE ABLE TO ACCOUNT FOR ALL OF THAT MONEY AND HOW WE PROPERLY, PROPERLY UTILIZED IT.

SO I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT.

[00:25:02]

AND SO, JASON, THANK YOU TO YOU AND YOUR TEAM FOR THAT.

AND THEN JUST WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE ONCE AGAIN THAT DR.

ANZALONE IS HERE. AND SO IT'S BEEN GREAT TO BE GETTING TO WORK WITH HIM A LITTLE BIT TODAY, AND HE'LL BE IN THE DISTRICT A LITTLE MORE TOMORROW AND WE'RE JUST KIND OF RAMPING UP WITH HIM. SO REALLY EXCITED TO KEEP US MOVING.

SO ANYTHING ELSE? OKAY. WELL, THEN.

I BELIEVE THAT MOVES US DOWN TO PUBLIC COMMENTS.

[5. PUBLIC COMMENTS]

ITEM NUMBER FIVE ON OUR AGENDA.

BEFORE WE DO THAT, I JUST WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENTS FOR THIS MEETING.

THE BOARD VALUES PUBLIC INPUT.

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD IS TO ACTIVELY LISTEN AND REFLECT ON THE PUBLIC COMMENTS. THE BOARD MAY ONLY DISCUSS AND ACT UPON ITEMS INCLUDED ON THE WRITTEN AGENDA.

FOR THAT REASON, BOARD MEMBERS CANNOT RESPOND TO ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS DURING PUBLIC COMMENT, BUT CAN ASK THE SUPERINTENDENT TO FOLLOW UP ON ISSUES RAISED DURING PUBLIC TESTIMONY.

GUIDELINE FOR PUBLIC INPUT.

EMPHASIZE THE RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS.

BOISTEROUS CONDUCT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AT ANY MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, NOR WILL ANY HARASSING OR THREATENING REMARKS BE TOLERATED.

COMPLAINTS ABOUT INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE AS A PERSONNEL MATTER. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REQUIREMENTS NO LONGER REQUIRE MASKS IN THE IN THE BOARDROOM. SO JUST POINTING THAT OUT, EACH PERSON PROVIDING PUBLIC COMMENT WILL HAVE A TOTAL OF 3 MINUTES ONCE CALLED UPON.

PLEASE STEP UP TO THE PODIUM, FACE THE BOARD, STATE YOUR NAME FOR THE RECORD.

THE BELL WILL RING AT 3 MINUTES TO REMIND YOU THAT YOUR TIME IS UP.

WE'LL CONTINUE THE PROCESS OF SIGNING IN FOR PUBLIC COMMENT AND GOING OFF THE LIST GIVEN TO ME. AND IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE TWO, TWO FOLKS SIGNED UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENT TONIGHT.

SO FIRST TO GIVE PUBLIC COMMENT, IS ERIC CHILEAN? MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN.

OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, I HAVE PERSISTENTLY ASKED YOU THREE QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT'S EQUITY POLICY.

I LIKE YOU BELIEVE THAT RACISM AND OPPRESSION ARE ABHORRENT AND SHOULD BE VIGOROUSLY ROOTED OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS.

MY FOCUS ON THIS IS INTENSE, IN PART BECAUSE YOU SAID THAT RACISM IN OUR SCHOOLS IS THE PRIMARY REASON THERE IS A SIZABLE PERFORMANCE AND DISCIPLINARY GAP BETWEEN BLACK AND HISPANIC STUDENTS ON THE ONE SIDE, AND WHITE STUDENTS IDENTIFYING AS TWO OR MORE RACES AND ASIAN AND ASIAN INDIAN ON THE OTHER.

ONE QUESTION YOU DID ANSWER AFTER NUMEROUS EMAILS AND PUBLIC QUESTIONING WAS THIS HOW MANY TEACHERS ARE ADMINISTRATORS HAVE BEEN TERMINATED BECAUSE OF THEIR RACIST OR OPPRESSIVE ACTIONS SINCE THIS POLICY WAS IMPLEMENTED? YOU ANSWERED ZERO.

MY SECOND QUESTION HAS BEEN ON YOUR DESK FOR THREE YEARS BECAUSE OF SYSTEMIC RACISM IS SO PERNICIOUS IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT AND IS THE PRIMARY REASON FOR THIS ACADEMIC AND DISCIPLINE DISPARITY.

AND IT DOESN'T EXIST IN STAFF BEHAVIORS AND ACTIONS.

IT MUST HAVE BEEN IN CURRICULUM, PEDAGOGY OR POLICY.

AND SO I ASK MY SECOND QUESTION AGAIN WHAT CURRICULUM HAVE YOU ELIMINATED OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS BECAUSE IT WAS RACIST OR OPPRESSIVE IN ALL THIS TIME, YOU NEVER ONCE ANSWERED THAT YOU ELIMINATED SIXTH GRADE, SEVENTH GRADE OR EIGHTH GRADE ADVANCED MATH BECAUSE OF EQUITY.

IN FACT, STRONG EVIDENCE SUGGESTS ADMINISTRATORS WERE SPECIFICALLY COACHED NOT TO BRING UP THE EQUITY POLICY WHEN ANSWERING THE NUMEROUS UPSET PARENTS WHO WANTED THIS CHALLENGING MATH OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

NOW, THESE PARENTS AREN'T FAMILIAR WITH WORDS LIKE RACIALIZED TRACKING OR CATEGORICAL INEQUALITY OR OTHER NEO ACADEMIC THEORIES LIKE THESE.

NOR DID THEY NOTICE THAT YOUR FIRST PUBLISHING OF THE EQUITY POLICY MADE CLEAR THAT RAISING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF ALL STUDENTS WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE UNLESS THEIR HIGH PERFORMING CHILD'S RAISE WAS SLOWER THAN THE RAISE OF THE LOWER PERFORMING STUDENTS.

TO DO SO OPERATIONALLY, YOU WROTE THAT YOU DESIRE TO, QUOTE, TRANSFORM PRACTICES WHICH LEAD TO THE UNDERREPRESENTATION OF STUDENTS OF COLOR IN PROGRAMS SUCH AS ADVANCED PLACEMENT. SO WHY DID YOU ELIMINATE COST NEUTRAL, ADVANCED MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH OFFERINGS? IT SEEMS TO ME BECAUSE OF EQUITY.

AFTER THREE YEARS OF NUMEROUS EMAILS, WHY NOT JUST BE TRANSPARENT ABOUT THIS? AND SO I ASK AGAIN, WHAT OTHER CURRICULUM, PEDAGOGY OR POLICY? AND NOW AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I MUST ASK WHAT STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES OR STUDENT SAFETY SYSTEMS HAVE YOU ELIMINATED BECAUSE OF EQUITY? THANKS AGAIN FOR LISTENING AND BEING WILLING TO LEAD.

LEADERSHIP IS IMPORTANT. APPRECIATE IT.

THANK YOU. NEXT UP IS COREY.

MARSHALL. HELLO, EVERYONE.

[00:30:06]

MY NAME IS COREY MARSHALL.

I WORK AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL AND ALTHOUGH I AM A UNION REP, I AM HERE JUST REPRESENTING THE REPRESENTATIVE TEAM AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

SO I'M NOT HERE IN ANY CEA CAPACITY FOR THIS.

VERY QUICKLY, I AM HERE TODAY TO SPEAK.

I DID ONE MONTH AGO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL AT OUR MONTHLY MEETING AGREED THAT THE MOOD OF THE HIGH SCHOOL WAS UNUSUAL.

WE WERE APPROACHING THE TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF COVID.

WE HAD JUST PASSED THE ANNIVERSARY OF OTHER EVENTS AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL, AND IT'S OFTEN THE CASE IN LIFE. THAT ANNIVERSARY EFFECT IS REAL.

IT SPARKS MEMORIES, IT SPARKS EMOTIONS.

WE JUST FELT IT WAS TIME TO CHECK IN WITH OUR MEMBERS.

WE DIDN'T REALLY HAVE A SPECIFIC AGENDA OR GOAL OTHER THAN TWO MAIN POINTS THAT KEPT COMING UP. SO WE ASKED ABOUT TWO SPECIFIC QUESTIONS, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, WE JUST DECIDED TO PROVIDE STAFF WITH A SIMPLE, OPEN ENDED SURVEY JUST TO ASK ABOUT SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES THAT THEY HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

AFTER THE SURVEY HAD BEEN OPEN FOR TWO WEEKS, THE TEAM COLLABORATED ON A FINAL DRAFT SUMMARY OF INFORMATION.

AGAIN, WE DIDN'T GO INTO THIS WITH ANYTHING SPECIFIC WE WERE LOOKING FOR.

WE JUST WANTED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY PATTERNS, COMMONALITIES, THEMES THAT WE COULD PULL OUT OF IT. IN YOUR EMAIL BOXES ABOUT 30 SECONDS AGO, YOU'LL FIND THAT I EMAILED YOU A SUMMARY OF THOSE FINDINGS.

IT IS LENGTHY. PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME AT YOUR LEISURE TO LOOK OVER THEM IF YOU'D LIKE.

AND WE ALSO PROVIDED THIS INFORMATION TO CSS ADMIN.

I DO NOT HAVE TIME WITH THE CLOCK TO GET INTO ALL OF THE LITTLE DETAILS OR ANYTHING, SO I JUST WANTED TO READ ONE PART OF IT AND THEN WRAP IT UP WITH A QUICK THING.

THIS IS FROM OUR TAKEAWAY SECTION THAT YOU'LL FIND NEAR THE END OF THE SURVEY, AND IT SAYS OUR GOAL WITH SHARING THESE RESULTS WITH YOU IS SO THAT EVERYONE FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD TO DISTRICT PERSONNEL TO ADMINISTRATORS CAN HEAR WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND WITH OUR EDUCATORS, AT LEAST AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

THIS IS NOT MEANT TO CAST BLAME OR SHAME, BUT RATHER TO COMBAT THE ISOLATION THAT WE HAVE FELT OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS AND KNOW A LOT OF TIMES SOMETHING LIKE THIS, IT CAN BE SEEN AS WE'VE GOTCHA.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR A CERTAIN AGENDA AND WE'RE HOPING TO FIND A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO CAN BACK US UP WITH THIS. WE WE DIDN'T WANT THAT TO BE THIS.

IT WAS HONESTLY, THE SURVEY WAS JUST A WE HAVEN'T SEEN ANYBODY FOR A LONG TIME.

WE HAVEN'T INTERACTED WITH A LOT OF US FOR A LONG TIME IN ANY MEASURABLE WAY.

WE WANTED TO GIVE THE PEOPLE WHO HAD POSITIVE THINGS TO SAY EQUAL WEIGHT AND EQUAL ABILITY TO HAVE THEIR PERSPECTIVES HEARD AS PEOPLE WHO HAD SOME STRUGGLES AND SOME NEGATIVE THINGS TO SAY.

AND I HOPE THAT WE COVERED THAT ON THERE.

SO I HOPE THAT YOU CAN SEE THIS FOR THE IN THE LIGHT THAT IT IS MEANT TO BE, WHICH IS IT HAS BEEN SUCKY FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE FOR A LOT OF YEARS.

NOT EVERY PROBLEM THAT WE HAVE IN THIS DISTRICT IS OUR FAULT.

THERE'S COVID, THERE'S STUFF GOING ON IN THE WORLD.

BUT WE ARE ASKING FOR OURSELVES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, FOR ALL OF YOU, FOR DISTRICT LEADERSHIP, FOR ADMIN, TO LOOK AT WAYS THAT MAYBE WE COULD STILL DO SOMETHING TO FIX SOME OF THESE ISSUES. MAYBE WE CAN STILL DO SOMETHING TO LIFT UP SOME OF THESE STRUGGLES THAT PEOPLE ARE FEELING.

AND THERE WERE SOME INTERESTING STUFF THAT WE PULLED OUT OF THERE.

SO I'M ASKING YOU TO FEEL FREE TO TAKE YOUR TIME, LOOK OVER THE SURVEYS.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME OR ANYBODY ELSE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL ABOUT THE MOTIVES OR THE PURPOSE OR ANYTHING BEHIND IT.

AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THANK YOU. THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF PUBLIC COMMENT.

WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ITEM.

[6. ITEMS ADDED TO THE AGENDA]

ITEM SIX, JUST POINTING OUT THAT THERE WERE A COUPLE OF ITEMS ADDED TO THE TO THE AGENDA THAT WILL GO OVER HERE IN A MOMENT.

[7. CONSENT AGENDA]

BUT I WOULD ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE OUR CONSENT AGENDA.

ITEM SEVEN. I'LL MAKE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THE CONSENT AGENDA.

SECOND. ALL RIGHT.

IT WAS MOVED BY ERICA, SECONDED BY CONNIE.

ANY DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

OPPOSED. MOTION CARRIES.

NEXT IS ITEM NUMBER EIGHT A ARE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

[8. REPORTS]

SO, DOUG.

OKAY. AS THE BOARD TALKED ABOUT EARLIER FRIDAY, WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO FIVE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AND YOU CAN SEE THE FIVE SCHOOLS UP THERE.

AND WHAT I LOVE ABOUT OUR SYSTEM IS THEY'RE ALL VERY DIFFERENT.

AND I ALWAYS TALK ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS AND OUR OUR STAFF AT THESE SCHOOLS.

THEY ALL HAVE THEIR OWN PERSONALITY.

SO WE GOT TO VISIT HAYES FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOL, WOODBURN ELEMENTARY, CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, CLACKAMAS LAKE ELEMENTARY AND THE HEIGHTS LEARNING CENTER.

[00:35:03]

SO THIS IS THE HEIGHTS LEARNING CENTER.

AND FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE NOT BEEN THERE, I WOULD HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU GO TO SPEND TIME WITH OUR THREE AND FOUR YEAR OLDS AND EVEN YOUNGER ACTUALLY AS WELL.

AND SO WE WE WENT IN AND JUST HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE WITH THEM AND AND IT WAS PRETTY FUNNY EVEN IT DIDN'T MATTER WHETHER WE WERE AT THE HEIGHTS OR AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, REGARDLESS OF THE AGE OF OUR STUDENTS, WHEN FIVE PEOPLE COME INTO THE ROOM, THEY THEY STOP AND THEY'RE LIKE, HEY, WHO'S THIS? WHAT ARE THEY DOING? SO IT WAS JUST KIND OF FUN, JUST THE REACTION FROM FROM THE HEIGHTS LEARNING CENTER STUDENTS.

THEY WERE THEY WERE A PRETTY FUN BUNCH.

SO GREAT OPPORTUNITY THERE TO JUST GO SEE.

AND I THINK WITH THIS, THE ONE POINT THAT I WANT TO EMPHASIZE ABOUT THIS IS, IS I AM GUILTY AS OTHERS THAT I OFTEN SAY K 12 IT'S REALLY PRE K 12 IS OUR SYSTEM.

AND SO THIS IS A GREAT REMINDER FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT THAT.

LACK OF MS. LAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

SO THIS IS JULIE MUELLER WITH SOME STUDENTS, AND SHE WAS SHOWING US WE WENT INTO A KINDERGARTEN CLASS AND THEN THEY'RE DOING SOME SMALL GROUP WORK.

AND SHE'S ACTUALLY GOT A SMALL GROUP OF STUDENTS AS WELL, AND SO DOES SOME OTHER PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING. AND SO THEY'RE WORKING ON CERTAIN THINGS.

SO IT'S JUST FUN TO SHOW THAT EVERYBODY IS INVOLVED, WHETHER YOU'RE THE PRINCIPAL CUSTODIAN, CLASSROOM TEACHER, BUS, IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT WE'RE ALL INVOLVED WITH OUR STUDENTS. AND SO GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO TO SEE WHAT THEY WERE DOING, WHAT THE LEOPARDS WERE DOING AS WELL. AND THEN THIS WAS CAMUS HIGH SCHOOL.

AND THIS WAS A VERY INTERESTING THIS WAS CHESSON IS THE LAST NAME.

AND HE WAS THEY WERE DOING A SONG AND IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING TO WATCH HOW THEY WERE PRACTICING. AND I'M NOT A MUSIC PERSON.

I LOVE LISTENING TO MUSIC, BUT CORY WAS JUST IN HIS ELEMENT AND YOU KNOW, JUST TO HEAR THESE STUDENTS AND THEY WERE WARMING UP.

AND I THOUGHT I WAS AT A CONCERT.

I WAS LIKE, THIS IS AWESOME.

AND SO AGAIN, BACK TO I THINK WE'VE HEARD IT TONIGHT, IT'S JUST GREAT TO BE IN SCHOOL AGAIN WITH OUR STUDENTS AND SEEING THEIR FACES AND, YOU KNOW, MASKS ARE STILL OPTIONAL. AND MATT, WE YOU SAW TONIGHT, WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT ARE STILL MASKING AND SOME THAT ARE NOT. WE HAVE STAFF THAT ARE STILL MASKING AND SOME THAT ARE NOT.

AND IT WAS JUST GREAT TO SEE JUST THESE STUDENTS.

JUST THEY'RE PLAYING A MUSIC GAME AND YOU CAN'T REALLY TELL HERE, BUT THEY WERE HAVING FUN WITH IT AS IF THEY WERE YOUNGER KIDS, EVEN THOUGH THESE ARE THE COOL HIGH SCHOOL KIDS. SO THAT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE.

AND THEN WOODBURN ELEMENTARY, THEY HAVE THIS PROJECT AND YOU CAN'T SEE WHAT IT SAYS ON THAT READER BOARD OR THE BOARD ON THE SIDE THAT YOU CAN SEE COREY IS LOOKING AT RIGHT NOW, AND TRACY AND AND BRIAN AND THE ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL CLAIRE IN THERE AND IT SAYS ALL ARE WELCOME HERE.

AND THEY DID A HUGE ACTIVITY WITHIN THEIR BUILDING, EVERY GRADE LEVEL, EVERY CLASS, READ THE BOOK, ALL ARE WELCOME HERE.

AND EACH CLASS HAS A NUMBER IN THE ORANGE OR THE FLUORESCENT GREEN.

AND THEN AROUND THAT, EACH STUDENT DID THEIR OWN PICTURE OF THEMSELVES AND PUT THAT AROUND THERE. AND SO EVERY STUDENT HAS DONE THIS WITHIN WOODBURN.

AND THEN THIS WAS A CLASS THAT WE VISITED, I WANT TO SAY SECOND GRADE, I MIGHT BE OFF ON THAT. BUT AGAIN, JUST BEING IN THE CLASSROOMS AND BEING IN THE BUILDINGS, THE ENERGY WAS JUST OFF THE CHARTS.

AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS FIVE DIFFERENT BUILDINGS AND IT WAS A LONG DAY, JUST THE ENERGY AND IT JUST REBOOTS YOU, RIGHT? IT REBOOTS US AT CENTRAL OFFICE.

WE DO HAVE A LOT OF ADULT INTERACTIONS, BUT WHEN WE GET THERE INTO THE BUILDINGS, IT REMINDS US OF THIS IS WHY WE DO THE WORK.

AND THIS WAS HAYES FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOL.

AND WE STARTED THERE IN THE MORNING.

AND I WILL I HAVE A DISCLAIMER THAT MATH WAS ALWAYS A STRUGGLE FOR ME.

AND I'M LEARNING HOW TO SAY, YOU KNOW, WITH A GROWTH MINDSET THAT I'LL GET THERE.

IF I WOULD HAVE HAD A TEACHER LIKE THIS, I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THERE A LOT SOONER.

SHE WAS AWESOME. SO SHE TOOK HER KIDS OUTSIDE AND THEY WERE DOING SOME WORK ON ANGLES AND THEY WERE OUT THERE AND THEN WE FOLLOWED THEM BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM AND SHE CONTINUED THE LESSON IN THERE.

AND SHE HAD THIS SHIRT THAT SAID MATH TEACHER NOUN, SOMETHING LIKE A TEACHER, BUT COOLER. SO JUST AGAIN, A GREAT VISIT TO TO GO TO TO A RANGE OF SCHOOLS IN OUR DISTRICT JUST TO SEE THE GREAT WORK THAT'S HAPPENING WITH OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF.

SO THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT WITH US.

ON FRIDAY, I WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT OUR BUILDINGS.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I THINK WE HAVE DERRICK UP NEXT WITH A C-T UPDATE.

SURE. YEAH.

OKAY. SO I WANT TO GIVE A QUICK UPDATE.

[00:40:03]

I'LL DO THE ANNUAL CT REPORT IN AUGUST OR JULY.

THAT'S A LONG, COMPREHENSIVE REPORT.

THIS IS KIND OF A SHORT UPDATE THAT REALLY I WANTED.

THERE'S TWO BIG THINGS, AN INVITATION AT THE END, BUT I WANTED TO LET THE BOARD KNOW BECAUSE I KNOW A COUPLE OF BOARD MEMBERS TYPICALLY JOIN OUR GENERAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE AND WE'LL STILL HAVE THAT MEETING ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR, BUT IT'LL BE WHAT'S CALLED A PROGRAM ADVISORY. THERE'S TWO ADVISORIES THAT ARE REQUIRED IN CTE, AND THE GENERAL ADVISORY IS SUPPOSED TO BE REGIONAL, AND WE'VE NEVER REALLY DONE IT THAT WAY BECAUSE AS A DISTRICT WE HAVE BEEN SMALLER AND SO WE'VE BEEN VERY COMMUNITY BASED.

BUT THIS YEAR WE GROW GREW INTO OUR OURSELVES AND WE HAVE JOINED VANCOUVER, EVERGREEN AND BATTLEGROUND AND WE HAVE SOMETHING CALLED THE C FOR SO THEY CALL IT THE CLARK FOUR.

SO IT'S THE LARGEST FOR DISTRICTS.

AND CLARK, WE MEET TOGETHER AS A GENERAL ADVISORY AND SO WE HAVE MORE RESOURCES, MORE BUSINESSES ARE REPRESENTED. AND PART OF THE LOGIC BEHIND THIS IS THAT OUR STUDENTS WORK THROUGHOUT THE REGION AND THE STATE, FRANKLY.

AND SO WE HAD THAT ADVISORY MEETING ON THE SECOND I'M SORRY, ON 210.

AND PART OF THAT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING IS WE HAVE REGIONAL ECONOMIST SCOTT BAILEY COME IN AND GIVE US ESSENTIALLY WHAT IS OUR REGION LOOKING LIKE ECONOMICALLY SPEAKING, SO WE CAN ORIENT AND ALIGN OUR COURSES TOWARD THOSE THOSE INDUSTRIES THAT ARE IN HIGH DEMAND. AND HIS ECONOMIC FORECAST WAS REALLY INTERESTING.

I ASKED FOR A COPY OF IT AND I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN IT.

BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HE ARTICULATED WAS THAT IN OUR REGION, WE ACTUALLY HAD A STRONGER AND QUICKER RECOVERY FROM COVID, FROM THE PANDEMIC THAN THE REST OF THE STATE, WHICH IS PRETTY REMARKABLE.

HE HIS REPORT TALKED ABOUT THE FACT THAT CLARK COUNTY IS IS LARGELY FULLY RECOVERED IN MOST SECTORS AND IN SPECIFICALLY CONSTRUCTION.

WE ARE BOOMING IN CLARK COUNTY.

THE FOUR AREAS HE HIGHLIGHTED WERE PROFESSIONAL SERVICES.

SO FINANCIAL SERVICES, WHICH WE ALL KNOW IN CAMAS, COMPANIES LIKE FISHER INVESTMENTS, HAVE DONE VERY WELL THROUGHOUT THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS MANUFACTURING, CONSTRUCTION AND THEN I.T.. AND WHAT WAS INTERESTING IN OUR REGION ABOUT IT WAS REALLY THE THE NEED OF THOSE TWO COMPANIES, ABC AND ZOOM INFO TO HAVE LOCAL TALENT.

AND SO PART OF THAT IS, YOU KNOW, WE'VE KNOWN THAT COMPUTER SCIENCE IS IMPORTANT IN OUR AREA, BUT PART OF THAT IS CONTINUING TO BUILD AND GROW THE COMPUTER SCIENCE PATHWAY.

AND SO AS A SEE FOR REGIONAL ADVISORY, ONE OF THE THINGS WE DISCUSSED WAS CONTINUING THAT AT THE BUILDING LEVEL IN CAMAS, WE HAVE ACTUALLY WE'RE ACTUALLY PRETTY FAR ALONG THAT PATH COMPARED TO OTHER DISTRICTS.

WE'VE HAD COMPUTER SCIENCE FOR QUITE SOME TIME OVER A DECADE AND WE'VE WE HAVE SEVERAL COURSES AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL.

AND SO PART OF THIS PROCESS WE ADDED WE'RE ADDING COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPALS THIS YEAR.

SO THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR AT COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL.

WE OFFERED IT AND THEN IN THE NEXT CYCLE WILL ADD SOUND ENGINEERING, WHICH IS AN INTERESTING STORY AND INTRODUCTION TO CAD.

SO SOUND ENGINEERING COURSE ACTUALLY CAME OUT OF DISCOVERY.

STUDENTS WANTED TO LEARN HOW TO PODCAST, AND PODCASTING IS NOW A VERY VIABLE CAREER OPTION. AND SO FIGURING OUT THE SOUND AND VIDEO OPTIONS AROUND PODCASTING IS WHAT THAT COURSE WILL REPRESENT. SO THAT KIND OF ALL CAME TOGETHER THROUGH THIS ADVISORY COMMITTEE PROCESS. WE'LL STILL MEET IN OUR ADVISORY IN THE SPRING, LIKELY AT THE END OF APRIL OR BEGINNING OF MAY. BUT THE ACTUAL GENERAL IS NOW A REGIONAL A REGIONAL MEETING.

SO THE OTHER PIECE OF THE UPDATE IS AROUND DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL.

SO WE ARE REALIGNING AND REDESIGNING THE CTE GRADUATION PATHWAYS AT DISCOVERY.

AND SO WE HAVE THREE CTE GRADUATION PATHWAYS AND THAT'S AN ENGINEERING AS THE SCHOOL HAS IS DEVELOPING AND CONTINUING TO FIND ITS IDENTITY.

WE'RE TRYING TO HONE IN ON WHAT ARE THE PATHWAYS THAT STUDENTS WANT AND THAT THE COMMUNITY AT DISCOVERY WANTS.

SO WE HAVE THE THREE PATHWAYS.

WE HAVE OUR ENGINEERING AND THE COURSES THAT WE HAVE IN THE ENGINEERING PATHWAY ARE LISTED THERE DESIGN, ENGINEERING, FABRICATION, ONE AND TWO, ADVANCED MAKERSPACE AND THEN INDEPENDENT MAKERSPACE PROJECTS.

AND SO THEY'VE BEEN DOING THESE COURSES, BUT WE'RE TRYING TO COME OUT AND SHOW HERE ARE THE COURSE PATHWAYS AT DISCOVERY TO ALLOW YOU TO GRADUATE.

A NEAT PART OF THIS IS I THINK THAT THE BOARD IS AWARE OF THE PIVOT PROJECT BECAUSE THEY PRESENTED TO YOU AND NOW THE PIVOT PROJECT HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY TWO NATIONAL COMPETITIONS, ONE OF WHICH THEY WERE ONE, AND THE SECOND ONE, THEY'RE NOW A FINALIST.

IT'S VERY SIGNIFICANT.

THE SAMSUNG SOLVE FOR TOMORROW IS A.

A MASSIVE NATIONWIDE CONTEST AND THEIR TOP TEN TEAM, AND THEY'RE STILL DECIDING WHO THE

[00:45:04]

WINNER IS. TREMENDOUS.

BUT THAT IS CREATED IN THAT INDEPENDENT MAKERSPACE PROJECTS CLASS.

SO THERE'S A LOT OF CROSSOVER FROM THE ROBOTICS TEAM AS WELL.

THE STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED IN ROBOTICS AND THE ADVANCED MAKER SPACE, BUT THAT'S WHAT THAT THAT COURSE IS.

AND THEN WE HAVE THE DIGITAL ARTS PATHWAY.

AND SO YOU'LL SEE REALLY IT'S FORMED AROUND DIGITAL DESIGN AND DIGITAL ART.

SO WE HAVE DIGITAL DESIGN, INTRODUCTORY COURSE, GRAPHIC DESIGN, ADVANCED DESIGN.

AND SO IN THAT COURSE THEY ACTUALLY MAKE PACKAGING.

THEY, THEY MAKE THINGS THAT GO INTO THE DESIGN INDUSTRY AND THEN ANIMATION ONE AND TWO WILL BE WITHIN THAT PATHWAY.

AND THEN OF COURSE IN THERE WILL BE ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE STATE.

CTE COURSE CODES, ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND BUSINESS ARE ACTUALLY PART OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND SOME OF THE DESIGN COURSES, THERE'S SOME CROSSOVER.

AND THEN AS I MENTIONED, THE PODCASTING COURSE WILL ALSO BE PART OF THAT DIGITAL ART PATHWAY. AND THEN THE THIRD ONE WILL BE COMPUTER SCIENCE.

SO COMPUTER SCIENCE YOU HAVE PYTHON 201 AND 202101 AND AND 102 ARE MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSES.

SO THE CONTENT STANDARDS ARE MUCH MORE RIGOROUS IN THE COURSE, MOVES MUCH FASTER INTO A ONE AND TWO OR TWO.

AND THEN WE HAVE CODING INDEPENDENT PROJECTS AND AS PART OF THAT CLASS WE'LL LOOK AT ADDING SOME GAME DESIGN.

BUT THAT'S CHALLENGING IN A SMALLER SYSTEM TO BE ABLE TO HAVE A TEACHER WHO CAN TEACH ALL THOSE THINGS. SO FOR NOW, WE'VE IDENTIFIED THAT'S TWO CREDITS WORTH OF CLASSES WHERE A STUDENT CAN COMPLETE THEIR CTE GRADUATION PATHWAY.

AND THEN HERE'S THE THE BIG INVITE FOR THE BOARD.

THIS IS KIND OF COOL IN 2019.

SO WE HAD A OUR FIRST EVER COMBINED EVENT IN THE HIRING FAIR WITH WASHOUGAL AND MANIA.

AND SO WE INVITED ALL THE PEOPLE AND STUDENTS WHO LIVE IN CAMAS, WASHOUGAL AND SKIING OUT TO GO TO A HIRING FAIR.

WE HAD OVER 100 EMPLOYERS DIRECT HIRE STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

SO YOU COULD BE 40 AND SAY, I WANT TO CHANGE JOBS AT THAT EVENT.

AND THEN, OF COURSE, THE PANDEMIC HAPPENED AND WE DID IT THE LAST TWO YEARS, BUT WE DID IT IN A VIRTUAL MANNER WHICH IS NOT NEARLY AS IMPACTFUL.

SO THIS YEAR, WE'RE THE HOST AND WE'RE HOSTING BOTH OF THESE BOTH OF THESE EVENTS AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL. SO THE FIRST IS HIGHER EDUCATION FAIR.

SO AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, WE'VE TRADITIONALLY HAD LIKE A COLLEGE FAIR AND WE HAVE FOR YEARS SAID WE NEED TO DO MORE FOR ALL STUDENTS.

AND SO WE'VE DECIDED TO FOCUS ON ANY OPPORTUNITY POST HIGH SCHOOL.

SO WE HAVE APPRENTICESHIP, WE HAVE PEOPLE FROM THE TRADES, WE HAVE TWO YEAR COLLEGES.

YOU'RE REPRESENTED AT FOUR YEAR COLLEGES, THE MILITARY.

IT'S PRETTY NEAT. WE HAVE WORKSHOPS FROM L AND I.

SO SO THAT THAT SHOULD BE PRETTY FUN.

AND WE'RE, WE'RE PARTNERING ONCE AGAIN WITH WASHOUGAL.

SO IT'S A COMBINED EFFORT, KIND OF A SEMI REGIONAL EFFORT.

AND THEN THE INDUSTRY HIRING FAIR.

WE WILL BE HOSTING ALSO AT AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL ON MAY 12TH.

AND THAT IS ONCE AGAIN, WE HAVE OVER 100 INDUSTRIES THAT HAVE SIGNED UP TO DIRECT HIRE STUDENTS FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIPS, WHATEVER THEY MAY OFFER.

WHAT'S REALLY UNIQUE ABOUT THIS TIME, I THINK, IS THAT THERE'S A SIGNIFICANT SHORTAGE OF WORKERS. AND SO I GET CALLS VERY OFTEN FROM COMPANIES, HEY, DO YOU HAVE SOMEBODY WHO CAN DO THIS? AND SO THEY'RE LOOKING FOR STUDENTS RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL TO BEGIN THEIR CAREER FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO.

THE OTHER THING, PART OF SCOTT'S SCOTT BAILEY'S REPORT THAT WAS FASCINATING AND I.

YOU KNOW, I TRUST HIM. HE'S A REGIONAL ECONOMIST.

BUT HE SAID UNIVERSITY ENROLLMENT WAS 25% DOWN OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS.

AND SO THAT'S A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT NUMBER.

AND THAT DOES TELL ME, AS THE CITY DIRECTOR, THAT WE NEED TO PROVIDE MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO GO WORK. THEY WANT TO DO THAT.

THAT'S. YEAH, THAT'S IT.

ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS? LIKE I SAID, IT'S KIND OF INTERIM REPORTS WANT TO GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION AND THEN INVITE YOU TO THESE EVENTS IF YOU CAN MAKE IT.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME THOSE WILL BE? WE DON'T. I DON'T HAVE THE TIME YET.

I THINK 530 TO 730.

IT'S LIKE AN EVENING EVENT. YEAH, YEAH.

THEY'RE ALL OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL HOURS.

OKAY, GREAT.

DEREK, I WAS. I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THE SPECTRUM OF OFFERINGS THROUGH THE THE GRADUATION PATHWAY. YOU DESCRIBED A DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL PATHWAY.

AND I'M WONDERING, DO WE HAVE ACCESS NOW THROUGH THIS CE FOR CONSORTIUM TO HAVE STUDENTS MAYBE GO OTHER PLACES IF THERE'S A PROGRAM IN ONE OF THOSE DISTRICTS THAT THEY WANT TO PURSUE? WE HAVE NOT HAD THAT.

WE'VE HAD THAT CONVERSATION.

BUT WE WE'RE NOT TO THE POINT WHERE WE HAVE AN MOU WITH ANOTHER DISTRICT TO SAY, WE'LL ALLOW STUDENTS INTO YOUR PROGRAM.

THE SKILL CENTER.

IS THAT CONCEPT CORRECT? AND AND SO THERE IS SUCH A NEED IN SOME INDUSTRIES LIKE EVERGREEN IS STARTING A

[00:50:03]

CONSTRUCTION TRADES PROGRAM.

AND SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS WE'VE HAD WITH EVERGREEN IS MAYBE STUDENTS COULD COME HERE FOR PBL AND PERHAPS SOME STUDENTS COULD GO THERE FOR YOUR CONSTRUCTION TRADES PROGRAM BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE THE THE STUDENT STUDENT CAPACITY INTEREST TO HAVE A FULL CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM.

AND SO ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS THAT AT FORT VANCOUVER, THEY HAVE A REALLY RENOWNED WELDING PROGRAM. WE DON'T HAVE A WELDING PROGRAM.

WE HAVE SOME WELDING UNITS IN CLASSES.

SO WE DON'T WE'RE NOT TO THE SPOT YET WHERE WE'RE TRADING, TRADING ALLOWING STUDENTS TO GO TO DIFFERENT DISTRICTS AND SWAPPING.

BUT WE'VE HAD THOSE CONVERSATIONS AT DIRECTORS AND PART OF THAT IS IT'S IT'S THE NEXT LEVEL NOW THAT WE NEED TO GET INVOLVED THE, THE SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL REALLY.

BUT YEAH, THERE'S THESE, THE PROGRAMS ARE GROWING IN DISTRICTS THAT WILL EVENTUALLY I THINK THAT'LL THAT'LL HAPPEN I BELIEVE WE'LL CHECK IN LATER.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? I THOUGHT WE HAD INTRO TO CAD ALREADY.

DID WE HAVE ANOTHER CAD? OH YEAH. YEAH. SO THAT'S A LITTLE CLEANUP ON MY PART.

SO THE STATE HAS ZIP CODE, WHICH IS LIKE THE STATE CODE FOR A CTE CLASS AND WE HAVE BEEN TEACHING CAD IN AN INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING CLASS AND WE'RE GOING TO USE A ZIP CODE THAT IS SPECIFIC TO CAD.

SO BOTH CAMAS HIGH AND DISCOVERY HAVE A SEMESTER AND YEAR LONG CAD CLASSES, BUT WE'VE BEEN TEACHING IT UNDER AN INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING.

SO IT'S THE ZIP CODE.

THE STATE CODE IS ENGINEERING AND THIS WILL BE SPECIFICALLY A CAD ZIP CODE.

AND THEN THE LAST THING I'LL SAY IS MY SON GOES TO LIBERTY.

AND HE TOLD ME HE WANTED TO BRING A MICROWAVE FOR THIS.

DON'T BRING YOUR BAG. AND I SAID, NO, HE, I CAN PUT A BOOK IN A MICROWAVE DAD.

SO ANYWAY, I'M. SO THAT JACK IS HE'S GETTING SOME TRACTION WITH THE KIDS.

I CAN TELL.

ALL RIGHT. THAT'S THE END OF SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

WE'LL MOVE DOWN TO ITEM EIGHT, BE OUR MONTHLY BUDGET REPORT WITH JASON.

OKAY. YEAH.

I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE THIS EVENING ON A FEBRUARY BUDGET STATUS REPORT.

ALSO, THERE'S A FEW DIFFERENT THINGS GOING ON WITH BUSINESS SERVICES THESE DAYS WORKING ON OUR BUDGET. WE HAD THE CLOSE OF THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION.

WE RECENTLY JUST HAD AN AUDIT COMPLETED.

I APPRECIATE ALL THE COMPLIMENTS, COREY.

IT TAKES IT TAKES A GREAT TEAM AND I'M VERY FORTUNATE TO WORK WITH ONE.

SO THANK YOU, GAIL.

SO LEGISLATIVE SESSION AS EXPECTED, WE GOT SOME ENROLLMENT, STABILIZATION DOLLARS, ABOUT 1.9 MILLION, ROUGHLY.

THEY WILL BE ALLOCATING THAT TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE MONTHS OF MAY EXCUSE ME, APRIL, MAY AND JUNE OF THIS YEAR.

SO THIS IS TO PROVIDE SOME STABILIZATION DOLLARS TO DISTRICTS.

WHOSE ENROLLMENT IS STILL BELOW THE 2019 2020 LEVEL.

WE'RE ALSO GOING TO BE GETTING STAFFING, ENHANCED FUNDING.

THE LEGISLATURE ACTUALLY MODIFIED THE MODEL, THE FUNDING MODEL.

AND STAFFING AGAIN IS THE NURSES AND THE COUNSELORS AND A HANDFUL OF OTHER FOLKS, YOU KNOW, THAT SUPPORT STUDENTS IN IN THEIR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

SO IT'S A THREE YEAR PHASE IN.

AND WHEN I LOOK AT KIND OF THE FUNDING FORMULA.

IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE AFTER THREE YEARS WE'LL BE FUNDED AT ABOUT THE SAME LEVEL THAT WE'RE CURRENTLY AT.

BUT THEY'RE ALSO KIND OF WRITING RULES AROUND THIS MONEY A LITTLE BIT.

AND SO AS THAT IS COMING OUT, WE'RE TRYING TO KIND OF ANTICIPATE WHAT THE FUNDING MIGHT LOOK LIKE, WHAT ARE THE GUARDRAILS AROUND IT AND REQUIREMENTS.

SO BUT ALL INDICATIONS ARE RIGHT NOW THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT HAVING KIND OF A WHAT YOU WOULD CALL LIKE AN FTE GUARDRAIL, WHERE IF THEY'RE FUNDING, SAY, TEN COUNSELORS FOR CAMAS, THEY'D LIKE TO SEE TEN COUNSELORS ON STAFF.

BASICALLY, WE'RE WE EXCEED ALL OF THE STATE FUNDING PARAMETERS IN THIS AREA.

SO I DON'T HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT OUR COMPLIANCE BY ANY MEANS.

BUT IT IS GOOD TO SEE THE STATE INVEST IN THIS IN SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING A LITTLE BIT MORE. LOOKING AT THE 2223 BUDGET, THIS, OF COURSE, WHAT THE LEGISLATURE DOES FEEDS

[00:55:02]

INTO OUR 2223 BUDGET.

WE'VE HAD TWO REALLY GOOD BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETINGS IN THE MONTH OF MARCH, FEBRUARY AND MARCH, PRETTY ROBUST AND REALLY FOCUSING ON SUSTAINABILITY.

YOU KNOW, LOOKING AT THAT LONGER TERM PICTURE FOR CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE'VE GONE THROUGH QUITE A FEW CHANGES BETWEEN MCCLEARY AND COVID AND ENROLLMENT IMPACTS.

WE'RE STARTING TO KIND OF FIGURE OUT WHAT'S OUR NEW NORMAL AND START TO PUT A PATHWAY FORWARD THAT HOPEFULLY IS A LITTLE BIT MORE PREDICTABLE.

IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO BUDGET FOR PANDEMICS, OF COURSE.

SO HOPEFULLY WE'RE ON THE ON THE BACK SIDE OF THAT.

SO MORE TO COME IN THE NEXT MEETING.

THE BUDGET WORKSHOP.

EXCUSE ME? IN THE BOARD WORKSHOP.

WE'LL HAVE A DISCUSSION ON, ON ON WHERE WE'RE AT WITH THE 2223 BUDGET.

AND THAT IS THE DAY AFTER SPRING BREAK.

SO I WILL BE HOPEFULLY MORE TANNED FROM BEING IN HAWAII, BUT I REGRESS.

NOT THAT I'M EXCITED.

WE HAVE ALSO UPDATED OUR BUDGET WEB PAGE AND I JUST WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO, YOU KNOW, DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO THAT WHEN YOU GET A CHANCE.

PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FEEDBACK YOU MIGHT HAVE THAT IS ALREADY PUBLIC.

SO, I MEAN, ANYONE CAN SEE IT.

WE'VE JUST TRIED TO IMPROVE SOME OF THESE TOOLS TO BE MORE TRANSPARENT AND ALSO THAT THAT IMPROVE THAT USER EXPERIENCE.

SOMETIMES IT'S IT'S TOO MUCH DATA AND WE KIND OF HAVE TO ORGANIZE IT IN A IN A MANNER THAT IS A LITTLE BIT MORE UNDERSTANDABLE.

WE ALSO TRY TO RESPOND TO CURRENT QUESTIONS.

SO YOU'LL SEE WE GET A LOT OF QUESTIONS ON, WELL, WHAT ABOUT THE COVID RELIEF FUNDING? AND SO WE'RE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO UPDATE THAT.

WE HAVE A, YOU KNOW, A AN ICON FOR THAT.

SO ANYWAYS, WE'D LOVE ANY FEEDBACK THAT YOU FOLKS MIGHT HAVE.

WHERE DO YOU MENTION THE AUDIT? THAT THAT'S CLEAN. THE REPORT ACTUALLY IS AVAILABLE TODAY.

THE STATE POSTED IT, SO IT'S ON THE STATE AUDITOR'S WEBSITE.

I'LL DO OUR MANDATORY REPORTING WITH FOR FOR OUR FEDERAL COMPLIANCE PURPOSES AND ALSO FOR OUR BONDS. WE DO A REPORTING OF OUR ANNUAL AUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.

SO I'LL BE DOING THAT. ALSO COMING UP, CAPITAL FACILITIES PLAN.

WE'VE KIND OF TALKED ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT, BUT IT'S IT'S GOT TO GET REAL.

WE HAVE TO GET THIS THING DONE BY THE END OF APRIL.

AND BASICALLY, IT'S A SIX YEAR CAPITAL FACILITIES PLAN.

IT LOOKS AT KIND OF WHAT OUR ENROLLMENT TRENDS, WHAT OUR BUILDING CAPACITIES ARE, WHERE THOSE INTERSECT AND HOW THAT IDENTIFIES WHAT WHAT OUR FUTURE CAPITAL INVESTMENT IS. SO WE'LL HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT THAT AT THE BOARD WORKSHOP AS WELL.

YOU'LL KIND OF GET TO SEE KIND OF A DRAFT WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.

THEY'RE FAIRLY STANDARD.

YOU KNOW, AGAIN, THEY'RE DONE EVERY SIX YEARS.

WE DID GET AN EXTENSION THIS PAST YEAR JUST AS WELL AS MOST OF THE DISTRICTS IN CLARK COUNTY BECAUSE OF KIND OF THE COVID IMPACT.

WE WANTED TO KIND OF HAVE A LITTLE BIT LONGER BREATHING ROOM TO COME UP WITH THAT PLAN. AND SO WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH LEGAL COUNSEL TO GET THAT UPDATED.

IT'S GONE VERY WELL, SO HOPE TO HAVE A DRAFT OF THAT ON APRIL 12TH OR EXCUSE ME, APRIL 11TH. LOOKING AT FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHTS, I'LL JUST MENTION THERE REALLY WAS NOT A WHOLE LOT I MEAN, IT WAS JUST KIND OF A TRADITIONAL MONTH, IF YOU WILL, ACROSS THE FUNDS.

WE DO LIKE TO UPDATE THE END OF YEAR PROJECTION.

PROBABLY THE THING THAT'S CHANGED THE MOST HERE IS ON THE REVENUE SIDE BECAUSE WE PUT IN THAT GOT BOOSTED BY ABOUT 2 MILLION IN THAT ENROLLMENT STABILIZATION MONEY.

SO THAT CLOSED THAT DEFICIT GAP AND THAT REALLY HAD PROBABLY THE LARGEST IMPACT FROM OUR PREVIOUS PROJECTION, WHICH AT THE TIME THE LEGISLATURE HAD NOT OR THE LEGISLATURE HAS HAD NOT CONCLUDED AT THAT TIME.

THAT'S ABOUT IT FOR THIS EVENING AND THE REST I WON'T REALLY GO INTO.

I'LL PAUSE AND SEE IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT INFORMATION.

OKAY. THANK YOU.

SORRY. ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU, JASON.

[9. OPEN AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION]

NEXT UP, ITEM NINE A ARE ASSET PRESERVATION PROGRAM 2122 BUILDING CONDITION SUMMARY.

I THINK, SHERMAN, YOU'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT.

OKAY.

[01:00:13]

SO. WE WERE ABLE TO GO AND DO OUR ANNUAL BUILDING AUDIT.

WE GO TO THE BUILDINGS THAT HAVE RECEIVED STATE MATCHING FUNDS.

WE. WE DO THE ANNUAL AUDIT, A DISTRICT LEVEL ASSESSMENT.

SO WE GO AROUND AND DO THAT EVERY YEAR.

AND THEN ON THE FIFTH YEAR, WE HIRE A COMPANY THAT DOES THAT.

SO WHEN WE GO TO THE BUILDINGS, WE LOOK AT FOUNDATIONS, WE WALK THE BUILDINGS, WE LOOK AT WINDOWS, WE LOOK AT SITING, WE LOOK AT THE ROOFING, MAKING SURE IF THERE'S LEAKS IN THE BUILDING OR HOW THE CONDITION OF THE EQUIPMENT LOOKS.

SO WHEN WE DO THAT, AN EXCELLENT IS MORE LIKE IF A BUILDING IS BRAND NEW THEY CAN GET AN EXCELLENT.

MOST BUILDINGS IF THEY'RE REALLY WELL MAINTAINED THEY'LL GET A GOOD.

UM. AND THEN IF THEY'RE FAIR, POOR OR UNSATISFACTORY, WE MARK THOSE.

SO GRASS VALLEY WI.

THESE ARE THE SCHOOLS THAT HAD STATE MATCHING FUNDS WHEN THEY WERE BUILT OR CONSTRUCTED. AS YOU CAN SEE, OUR BUILDINGS ARE VERY WELL MAINTAINED.

OUR MAINTENANCE PEOPLE DO A WONDERFUL JOB TAKING CARE OF THOSE BUILDINGS.

CAMAS. HI.

THE REASON IT'S A LITTLE LOWER THE THE ROOFING IS ABOUT END OF LIFE.

SO RIGHT NOW WE'RE PATCHING SPOTS ON THE ROOF, BUT IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO, WE WILL NEED TO REPLACE THAT ROOF.

BUT OTHER THAN THAT, THE BUILDINGS LOOK EXCELLENT.

SO DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME HERE? WHEN YOU MENTIONED THE THE ROOF FOR CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, THAT WAS PART OF OUR PLAN FOR OUR THE CAPITOL LEVEE THAT WE JUST PASSED, CORRECT? YES. SO THAT'S THAT WAS THAT'S TO BE EXPECTED.

YES. OKAY.

AND THEN WE'LL BE DOING PRUNE HILL, WHICH ISN'T ON THIS LIST, BUT THIS SUMMER ALSO.

OKAY. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? OKAY. SHERMAN, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

[10. QUALITY FACILITIES AND RESOURCES]

THAT MOVES US TO ITEM 1010 A ON OUR AGENDA.

THIS IS THE ADOPTION OF OUR SCHOOL DIRECTOR REDISTRICTING MAPS AND.

WE HAD. THAT'S RIGHT.

AND I'M SO SORRY I FORGOT YOUR NAME.

OH, WE THINK LARRY MCKAY.

LARRY MCKAY IS GOING TO COME UP AND SHE'S GOING TO WALK US THROUGH THIS THIS PROCESS THAT WE'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS.

A PDF. OKAY.

THANK YOU AGAIN, BOARD MEMBERS, FOR HAVING ME HERE TONIGHT.

AGAIN, GOOD TO SEE YOU ALL.

I'M MIKE LARRABEE WITH AGAIN WITH FLOW ANALYTICS WHERE MAPPING AND DEMOGRAPHIC COMPANY OUT OF PORTLAND AND VANCOUVER.

AND WE'RE GOING TO SHOW YOU WHAT THE FINAL MAP IS.

BUT I'LL GIVE A LITTLE BIT MORE CONTEXT AS TO WHAT REDISTRICTING IS.

WHAT IT IS NOT IS CHANGING ATTENDANCE AREAS.

SO THERE WILL BE NO STUDENTS CHANGING ATTENDANCE AREAS.

YES, WE OUR COMPANY ACTUALLY HELPS OUT WITH BOUNDARY REVIEWS AND THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

SO THIS IS JUST DIRECTOR DISTRICTS.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ATTENDANCE AREA BOUNDARIES.

SO EVERY TEN YEARS, SPECIAL DISTRICTS ARE REQUIRED TO REBALANCE THEIR POPULATIONS FOR THEIR DIRECTOR DISTRICTS.

AND SO THAT'S WHAT FLOW ANALYTICS IS HELPING YOU ALL TO DO.

IT'S BEEN WE STARTED THE PROCESS LATE LAST YEAR, REENGAGED IN JANUARY, AND WE'VE BEEN THROUGH SEVERAL INITIAL SCENARIOS, WONDERFUL, SEVERAL INITIAL SCENARIOS AND A FEW DRAFT MAPS AND THEN THIS FINAL MAP.

AND SO WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT HERE IS IN THE DARK BLUE OUTLINE, THOSE ARE YOUR EXISTING DIRECTOR DISTRICTS.

AND THEN THE COLOR BLOCK UNDERNEATH YOU CAN SEE WHERE POPULATION HAS HAS CHANGED.

SO THE AREAS IN THE HATCHED THE HATCHED AREAS ARE GOING FROM ONE DISTRICT TO THE

[01:05:02]

OTHER. SO YOU CAN SEE THE CHANGE IN COLOR.

THIS ENDS UP YOUR EXISTING DIRECTOR DISTRICTS HAD A POPULATION DEVIATION, MEANING HOW UNBALANCED OR BALANCED YOU ARE OF AROUND 18%.

THE FINAL MAP BRINGS IT DOWN TO 1.1%.

YOU'RE REALLY LOOKING FOR UNDER 10%.

YOU'RE PRETTY SAFE UNDER 5%.

SO YOU YOU ALL HAVE MET THE MARK ON THAT.

THE DIRECTOR DISTRICTS NEED TO BE CONTIGUOUS, MEANING THEY CAN'T GRAB AN ISLAND OF POPULATION.

THEY MUST BE AS COMPACT AS POSSIBLE, WHICH IS WHICH IS CAN BE DIFFICULT WITH SPECIAL DISTRICTS BECAUSE THEY ARE ODDLY SHAPED AND THEN THEY MUST MEET ALL FEDERAL, LOCAL AND STATE LAWS, WHICH THIS PROCESS DOES.

THEY NEED TO IDENTIFY COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST AND RESPECT THOSE COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST, IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, AND THEN FOLLOW NATURAL AND EXISTING OR ARTIFICIAL BOUNDARIES LIKE ROADS OR OR STREAMS. SO THIS IS THE FINAL MAP THAT WE HAVE.

I DON'T KNOW. CAN I GO DOWN HERE AND SHOW YOU THE FINAL? THERE WE GO. HERE'S THE FINAL STATISTIC SHOWING THAT 1.1% DEVIATION.

AND THEN YOU ALSO HAVE SOME POPULATION DEMOGRAPHICS SHOWING THAT THERE'S NO NO EVIDENCE OF VOTING DILUTION.

SO FOR YOUR FOR YOUR DISTRICT.

AND WITH THAT, I WILL PASS IT OVER TO YOU ALL FOR ANY QUESTIONS.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? THANK YOU SO MUCH. OH, ABSOLUTELY.

I APPRECIATE IT. IT WAS WONDERFUL WORKING WITH YOU ALL.

IT'S BEEN A YEAH. IT'S BEEN A PROCESS ONCE EVERY TEN YEARS.

RIGHT. SO WE WENT OVER THIS PRETTY IN DETAIL BACK AT OUR FEBRUARY WORKSHOP AND THEN HAD TIME FOR PUBLIC COMMENT.

AND NOW THIS IS THE FINAL STEP.

SO I WOULD ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE THIS THIS FINAL VERSION OF THE REDISTRICTING MAP. I WOULD MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE FINAL SCHOOL BOARD REDISTRICTING MAP AS PRESENTED. I'LL SECOND THAT.

ALL RIGHT. IT WAS MOVED BY DOUG AND SECONDED BY ERICA.

ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OPPOSE.

ALL RIGHT. MOTION CARRIES.

ITEM TEN B THE APPROVAL FOR FINAL ACCEPTANCE OF THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL ROOF REPAIR WERE JUST, JUST FINAL ACCEPTANCE.

THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED.

AND WE JUST NEED THIS TO TO REALLY RETAIN.

SO I'LL ENTERTAIN A MOTION.

FOR. I WILL MOVE TO APPROVE THE FINAL ACCEPTANCE DECLARING CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL ROOF REPAIR WITH. GARLAND DBZ AS COMPLETE SECOND.

ALL RIGHT. IT WAS MOVED BY CONNIE AND SECONDED BY DOUG.

ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

I OPPOSED.

MOTION CARRIES. TEN C IS OUR ANNUAL FIRE ALARM INSPECTION CONTRACT.

SO A ONE YEAR CONTRACT TO MANCHESTER AND THIS IS PRETTY ROUTINE WORK.

ANY QUESTIONS OR DISCUSSION? I'LL ENTERTAIN A MOTION.

I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE A ONE YEAR CONTRACT TO GB MANCHESTER IN THE AMOUNT OF 59,725 FOR THE 2022 DISTRICT WIDE ANNUAL FIRE ALARM INSPECTIONS.

ALL RIGHT. MOVE BY ERICA, SECONDED BY DOUG.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR AND HE OPPOSED.

ALL RIGHT. MOTION CARRIES.

AND LET'S SEE TEN D THE ADOPTION OF OUR MIND WISE CURRICULUM, I THINK THE LEAST AGGRESSIVE HAS SOME INFORMATION TO PRESENT TO US HERE BEFORE ANY VOTE.

YES. GOOD EVENING.

I AM HERE AS PROXY FOR JENNIFER MCMILLEN.

SO CERTAINLY YOU'VE LOST SOMETHING IN THAT BARGAIN.

NONETHELESS, HERE WE ARE.

JENNIFER HAD A PREVIOUS ENGAGEMENT AND ISN'T ABLE TO MAKE IT TONIGHT, BUT SHE HAS REALLY BEEN LEADING THIS WORK ON THE BACK END.

AND SO JUST FIRST, AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF HER LEADERSHIP IN THIS AREA, WHICH IS ALL DIRECTED TOWARDS ONE OF OUR ONE OF THE FOCUS AREAS THAT WE HAVE AS A DISTRICT, WHICH IS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS OF OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO, AS YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE DUTIES OF THE BOARD IS TO REVIEW AND APPROVE CORE

[01:10:01]

CURRICULUM. GENERALLY, THAT MEANS THE THE MAJOR CURRICULUM THAT'S USED IN ANY COURSE AND THE CASE OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS.

AS WE BUILD WHAT WE THINK OUR STUDENTS NEED, WE WILL BE BRINGING TO YOU ALL OF THE PIECES THAT WE THINK PROVIDE A GREAT PROGRAM FOR OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO TONIGHT WE HAVE THIS PIECE, WHICH IS CALLED MIND WISE SUICIDE PREVENTION FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL.

SO FIRST, WHAT IS MIND WISE? ITS OTHER ACRONYM IS S.O.S., WHICH STANDS FOR SIGNS OF SUICIDE, AND IT'S AN EVIDENCE BASED PROGRAM THAT'S DESIGNED FOR BOTH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

AND ITS PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO TEACH OUR YOUTH TO IDENTIFY SIGNS OF DEPRESSION IN THEMSELVES AND OTHERS, AND TO KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO HELP THEMSELVES AND OTHERS AS WELL.

IT IS, AS YOU CAN SEE, USED IN MANY SCHOOLS ACROSS THE NATION.

AND IT'S IT INCLUDES SOME GREAT RESOURCES FOR TRAINING FACULTY AND STAFF, AS WELL AS FOR WORKING WITH STUDENTS AND FACILITATING THEIR CONVERSATIONS.

AND SO WHEN WE THINK ABOUT WHAT DATA LEADS US TO THIS, WE'VE BEEN TALKING FOR A WHILE NOW ABOUT HOW OUR STUDENTS FEEL AND THE WORLD THAT THEY'RE EXPERIENCING, THE LEVELS OF ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION AND COMING OUT OF A PANDEMIC.

SOME OF THE SIGNS THAT THEY HAVE THAT ALL IS NOT WELL.

AND SO ONE OF THE DATA SOURCES THAT WE ROUTINELY LOOK AT IS THE HEALTHY YOUTH SURVEY. AND THE HEALTHY YOUTH SURVEY IS GENERALLY ADMINISTERED EVERY TWO YEARS TO STUDENTS IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON AT GRADES SIX, EIGHT, TEN AND 12.

AND SO THAT WAY YOU ARE MEASURING, IN A WAY, OUR SIXTH GRADERS WHO THEN BECOME EIGHTH GRADERS. THE SURVEY IS ADMINISTERED AGAIN, THEN 10TH AND THEN 12TH.

AND I SAY ROUTINELY BECAUSE WE HAD A NON ROUTINE PANDEMIC, WE SHOULD HAVE ADMINISTERED THIS IN 2020 AND THE STATE DISCONTINUED BECAUSE THERE WASN'T A WAY TO DO IT WELL WHILE MOST STUDENTS WERE OUT OF SCHOOL.

AND SO FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2018, THIS SURVEY WAS ADMINISTERED ACROSS THE STATE IN THE FALL OF 2021.

AND SO NOW WE HAVE SOME OF OUR RESULTS AS OF JUST LAST WEEK THAT WE'RE STARTING TO MAKE SENSE OF IN UNDERSTANDING WHERE OUR STUDENTS ARE AND ALSO WHAT PROGRAMS AND SUPPORTS WE HAVE AND WHAT PROGRAMS AND SUPPORTS THAT WE MAY NEED.

SO ONE OF THE QUESTIONS THAT'S FREQUENTLY ASKED IS WHAT IS THE RESPONSE RATE LIKE? HOW MANY KIDS PARTICIPATED IN THIS SO THAT WE FEEL THAT WE CAN TRUST THE RESULTS THAT WE HAVE? SO IN THE FALL OF 2021, OUR RESPONSE RATE FOR GRADE EIGHT WAS 88%.

FOR GRADE TEN 83%, AND FOR GRADE 12, 65%.

NOW, THAT TREND WHERE WE HAVE FEWER SENIORS RESPONDING IS ONE THAT WE CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE.

IT IS ALSO A TREND ACROSS THE STATE.

SO WHEN WE LOOK AT THIS QUESTION DURING THE PAST 12 MONTHS, DID YOU EVER FEEL SO SAD OR HOPELESS? ALMOST EVERY DAY FOR TWO WEEKS OR MORE IN A ROW THAT YOU STOP DOING SOME USUAL ACTIVITIES. SO LOOKING AT PRECURSORS TO DEPRESSION, WHAT WE SEE IN THE BLUE BARS IS THE DATA FROM 2018 AND THE ORANGE BARS ARE THE DATA FROM 2021.

AND SO THE FIRST SET OF BARS IS GRADE EIGHT.

AND YOU SEE THAT THAT THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS RESPONDING TO THAT QUESTION HAS INCREASED FROM 24 TO 26%.

WE SAW THE SHARPEST INCREASE IN OUR GRADE TEN STUDENTS, WHICH WENT FROM 27% TO 34%.

AND WE STILL SEE AN INCREASE IN GRADE 12 FROM 37% TO 39%.

SO WHEN YOU LOOK AT THESE FIGURES AND YOU THINK OF A TYPICAL CLASSROOM AND HOW MANY STUDENTS THAT MEANS WITHIN THAT CLASSROOM WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THIS THIS FEELING OF THOSE PRECURSORS TO DEPRESSION, IT'S QUITE A LOT.

AND SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SUPPORTS THAT WE CONTINUE TO BUILD ARE REALLY HELPING OUR STUDENTS IDENTIFY IN THEMSELVES AND THEIR PEERS WHERE THEY ARE IN IN THAT THAT FEELING OF NEEDING SUPPORT AND THEN HOW TO GET THAT SUPPORT.

THE OTHER PIECE OF DATA FROM THIS LATEST SURVEY IS THE RESPONSE TO THIS QUESTION.

DURING THE PAST 12 MONTHS, DID YOU EVER SERIOUSLY CONSIDER ATTEMPTING SUICIDE? WE SAW A SLIGHT DROP IN GRADE EIGHT FROM 2018 TO 2021, 15% TO 14%.

IN GRADE TEN, WE SEE AN INCREASE FROM 15 TO 19%, AND IN GRADE 12, FROM 20 TO 23%.

SO WE HAVE MORE STUDENTS IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL YEARS EXPERIENCING SUICIDE IDEATION.

AND WHEN YOU THINK OF THIS AGAIN AND YOU LOOK AT THE GRADE TEN FIGURES, ONE IN FIVE STUDENTS HAS CONSIDERED ATTEMPTING SUICIDE AND ALMOST ONE IN FOUR STUDENTS IN GRADE 12

[01:15:05]

HAS CONSIDERED THE SAME.

AND SO WHAT WE KNOW THAT THAT MEANS IS THAT EVERY STUDENT WILL LIKELY EITHER EXPERIENCE THOUGHTS LIKE THIS OR KNOW A FRIEND WHO DOES.

AND SO THAT'S WHERE THIS CURRICULUM COMES IN, TO BE ABLE TO HELP SUPPORT STUDENTS IN KNOWING WHAT TO DO.

SO WHEN WE THINK OF CURRICULUM AGAIN.

YOU ABSOLUTELY EXPECT FROM US THAT WE'VE GONE THROUGH A PROCESS TO LAND AT THIS POINT WHERE WE'RE PRESENTING TO YOU.

SO IN THE FALL OF 2021, WE INITIALLY IDENTIFIED MIND WISE BECAUSE IT WAS AN EVIDENCE BASED YOUTH SUICIDE PROGRAM.

IT'S RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE.

IT'S ALSO EASY TO USE.

IT SUPPORTS OUR TEACHERS IN ADDRESSING A REALLY DIFFICULT TOPIC.

SO IN THE FALL, JENNIFER LED A GROUP OF HIGH SCHOOL HEALTH TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS TO EXPLORE THE CURRICULUM, AND THEY RECOMMENDED MIND WISE FOR HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH WAS THEIR THAT WAS THEIR FOCUS.

BUT THEY ALSO SAID THIS WOULD BE GREAT FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL, TOO.

SO AT THAT POINT, JENNIFER ENGAGED ANOTHER TEAM OF MIDDLE SCHOOL HEALTH TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS TO DO THE SAME, AND THEY ALSO FELT THAT THIS WOULD BE A CURRICULUM THAT THEY RECOMMEND. JENNIFER ALSO WENT TO THE STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO GET THEIR FEEDBACK ON THE LESSONS AND HOW THEY WORKED, AND STUDENTS WERE OVERWHELMINGLY IN FAVOR OF MOVING FORWARD WITH THIS, EVEN WITH UNDERSTANDING THAT SOME OF THE VIDEOS IN IT ARE CHEESY, THEIR WORDS.

OKAY, SO WITH ALL OF THAT RECOMMENDATION GOING FORWARD, THE NEXT PLACE THAT THEY LANDED WAS THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE ON MARCH 3RD, AND THAT COMMITTEE RECOMMENDED THIS FOR APPROVAL.

AND HERE WE ARE WITH YOU TODAY.

SO THIS IS HOW THIS CURRICULUM WORKS.

IT CAN BE DELIVERED IN AS LITTLE AS ONE CLASS PERIOD.

IT HAS MANY ADDITIONAL RESOURCES SO THAT IT CAN BE USED MORE.

FIRST STUDENTS VIEW A 20 MINUTE VIDEO THAT COMBINES DRAMATIZATIONS THAT DEMONSTRATE THE STEPS TO HELP A FRIEND WHICH ARE ACKNOWLEDGE CARE TELL ACT.

SO IT'S MADE TO BE EASY TO REMEMBER FOR STUDENTS, AND IT ALSO INCLUDES REAL LIFE STORIES FROM YOUNG ADULTS.

SO THE FEEDBACK FROM STUDENT ADVISORY WAS THAT THE DRAMATIZATIONS WERE A LITTLE ON THE CHEESY END, BUT THEY REALLY FELT THE REAL LIFE STORIES WERE POWERFUL AND ARE DONE REALLY WELL TO BE ABLE TO EXPRESS WHAT THAT WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE AND HOW HOW TO GET HELP OR GIVE HELP.

THEN THE AFTER THEY WATCH THESE DRAMATIZATIONS, THE FACILITATOR GUIDE STUDENTS IN A DISCUSSION OF THE VIDEO AND STUDENTS CAN LEARN MORE AND ENGAGING WITH EACH OTHER. THERE'S ALSO MANY EXTENSION LESSONS, SO OUR NEXT STEPS WOULD BE TO PURCHASE THE CURRICULUM.

IT IS FOR 95 PER BUILDING IN YEAR ONE AND $300 PER BUILDING AS AN ANNUAL RENEWAL.

SO IT'S A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE IN YEAR ONE THAN SUBSEQUENT YEARS.

AND THEN TO MEET WITH EACH OF THE THREE HIGH SCHOOLS TO DETERMINE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN THAT'S WRONG. TO MEET WITH EACH OF THE FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS TO DETERMINE.

THE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN, WHICH INCLUDES WHERE WILL LESSONS BE FACILITATED AND BY WHOM? BECAUSE IN EACH SCHOOL HAS A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SETUP SO THAT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS ENDS UP BEING AN IMPORTANT PART THAT CARRIES FORWARD EVERY YEAR AS WE CONTINUE OUR SUPPORT OF STUDENTS.

AND THEN IN ADDITION TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND AS A HAND OUT FOR YOU, I HAVE A HANDOUT FROM THE CURRICULUM THAT TELLS YOU WHAT THE ACT ACRONYM MEANS.

AND THEN THIS IS ONE STUDENTS GET AND IT ALSO GIVES EXAMPLES OF EACH PART OF THAT.

SO A ACKNOWLEDGE C CARE TT TELL T MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT PART BECAUSE GENERALLY WHEN A PEER IS TALKING TO ANOTHER PEER EXPERIENCING FEELINGS OF DEPRESSION OR SUICIDE IDEATION, MOST OFTEN THAT PEER WILL SAY DON'T TELL ANYONE.

AND SO STUDENTS REALLY HAVE TO NAVIGATE THAT SENSE OF TRUST WHILE KNOWING THAT ABSOLUTELY THEY NEED TO TELL AN ADULT.

AND SO THIS CURRICULUM HELPS WITH PRACTICING AND MODELING THAT ACTION.

THAT. I'LL GIVE THIS TO YOU AND THEN QUESTIONS.

YEAH, JUST TWO REALLY QUICK.

SO THIS IS IS THIS TO BE IMPLEMENTED NEXT YEAR THEN, OR ARE WE GOING TO TRY AND DO SOMETHING WITH IT THIS YEAR? WE'RE GOING TO TRY TO DO SOMETHING WITH IT THIS YEAR.

OKAY. AND THEN IN YOUR NEXT STEPS, I SEE TALKING ABOUT THE HIGH SCHOOLS THERE, THIS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, TOO.

SO ARE THEY WEIGHING IN ON IT? IT WILL. WE'RE GOING TO START AT THAT HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL AND THEN BUILD DOWN TO MIDDLE SCHOOL. GOT IT. OKAY, DOUG.

[01:20:01]

I KNOW WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS, BUT I JUST WANTED TO CONFIRM THE DATA WE SAW HERE TODAY ABOUT THE EIGHTH, 10TH, 12TH WAS CHEMIST SPECIFIC.

IT IS CAMAS SPECIFIC STUDENTS.

AND JUST TO CLARIFY THE BUDGET SOURCE TO KEEP TERMINOLOGY THE SAME.

WHEN I SEE THIS, IT SAYS BASIC ED, BUT THAT'S NOT ONE OF OUR BUCKET.

IT WILL BE CNI CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION.

OKAY. THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT. WELL, LISA, THANK YOU FOR AND YOUR TEAM AND JENNIFER, WHEREVER YOU ARE FOR ALL OF THIS. YOU MISSED HER EBULLIENCE.

I KNOW, BUT WE'LL SHARE HER WITH YOU ANOTHER TIME.

I APPRECIATE YOU.

I APPRECIATE YOU LAYING OUT ALL THE ALL THE WORK THAT'S GONE IN BEHIND THE SCENES ON THIS AND ALL THE DUE DILIGENCE THAT THAT EVERYBODY DID TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS WAS PRESENTED TO US TONIGHT. SO WITH THAT, I WOULD ENTERTAIN A MOTION FOR APPROVAL AND ADOPTION OF THE CURRICULUM.

AND I SUBMIT A MOTION TO APPROVE MINE WISE SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM CURRICULUM AS A CORE RESOURCE FOR ALL MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS FOR A TOTAL COST OF $3,960, EXCLUDING TAX AND SUBSEQUENT ANNUAL RENEWAL OF 2400 FROM THE CNI BUDGET.

SECOND. ALL RIGHT.

IT WAS MOVED BY ERICA, SECONDED BY CONNIE.

ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OPPOSE.

ALL RIGHT. MOTION CARRIES.

AND OUR FINAL ITEM ON ITEM TEN.

THE REQUEST FOR A NEW NEW MOWER PURCHASE WITH TRADE IN.

SHERMAN, DID YOU HAVE ANYTHING THAT YOU WANTED TO ADD TO THAT OR.

WE'RE TRYING TO. WE HAVE A LOT OF PROPERTY.

GREAT. NO, IT'S GREAT.

I APPRECIATE THAT. WE WERE BEING PROACTIVE ABOUT THIS AND GETTING ON THE ROTATION AND AS USUAL, FINDING WAYS TO TRADE IN OTHER EQUIPMENT TO SAVE SOME MONEY ON IT.

I ALWAYS APPRECIATE THAT.

SO ANY OTHER.

YEAH. I WOULD MOVE FOR APPROVAL OF THE MOWER PURCHASE IN THE AMOUNT OF $20,825.

SECOND. ALL RIGHT.

IT WAS MOVED BY DOUG, SECONDED BY CONNIE AND THE OTHER DISCUSSION.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

ALL RIGHT. AND HE OPPOSED.

ALL RIGHT. MOTION CARRIES JUST IN TIME, BECAUSE WE ONLY HAVE TWO WORKING MIKES UP HERE. RIGHT NOW, THEY'RE GOING DEAD.

IT'S ALL RIGHT. THAT'S OKAY.

BECAUSE THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF OUR REGULAR SESSION.
