[1. REGULAR BOARD MEETING CALL TO ORDER - 5:30 PM]

[00:00:05]

ALL RIGHT. WE ARE READY TO GO.

GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY, AND WELCOME TO OUR JUNE 27TH BOARD MEETING.

WE ARE GOING TO GET THINGS STARTED WITH THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE LED BY DOUG QUINN.

NEXT WE'LL HAVE THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND THAT WILL BE LED BY ERIKA COX.

I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GEOGRAPHICAL REGION OF CAMAS IS LOCATED ON THE ANCESTRAL AND TERRITORIAL LANDS OF THE CHINOOK AND COWLITZ PEOPLE, AND THAT THE CHINOOK ARE STILL FIGHTING TO BE A FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBE ON THEIR OWN LAND.

[2. MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD(S)]

THANK YOU, ERIKA. NEXT ON OUR AGENDA IS THE MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD.

AND I BELIEVE THAT ALLAN FLECK IS HERE TO PRESENT AND TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT, OUR DESERVING RECIPIENT.

THANK YOU. ALLAN FLECK, DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL PROGRAMS. GOOD EVENING. I'M HERE TONIGHT BECAUSE I'D LIKE TO HONOR DIANE SHORT.

DIANE'S WORKED WITH ME FOR A LONG TIME.

SHE ACTUALLY WORKED WITH ME AND SHE WORKED QUITE A FEW YEARS BEFORE MOVING OVER HERE WITH MYSELF AND REBECCA.

YOU KNOW, JUST THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF KEEPING ALLEN ON TASK AND ORGANIZED AND KNOWING WHAT TIME HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE AT WHAT MEETING.

AND IT STARTED 5 MINUTES AGO AND I'M CALLING THEM HURRY UP.

YOU KNOW, SHE'S ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT ASSET TO ME AND MY DEPARTMENT.

OUR STAFF FIND HER RELIABLE.

SHE GETS THINGS DONE.

SHE DOES THINGS WHEN SHE SAID SHE'S GOING TO DO THEM.

THE REASON I'M BRINGING HER NAME FORWARD FOR THE MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD TODAY, THOUGH, IS BECAUSE OF THE EXTRAORDINARY WORK THAT SHE'S BEEN DOING SINCE WELL, SINCE COVID.

WE'VE BEEN IN CRITICAL STAFF SHORTAGES FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS.

FOR SOME REASON, IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS EVEN WORSE THIS YEAR.

AND THAT WAS MAINLY BECAUSE WE KEPT HAVING ROTATING STUDENTS GOING OUT AND PARENTS GOING OUT AND TEACHERS GOING OUT, AND WE WERE GETTING LOTS OF CALLS.

SO WHEN WE HAVE DISTRICT PROGRAMS THAT RELY ON FOUR OR FIVE, SIX PAIRS WITH SIX OR SEVEN STUDENTS AND WE HAVE THREE PAIRS OUT, THEY'VE BEEN THEY START CALLING AND WE START GETTING TEXTS AT 6:00 IN THE MORNING.

AND DIANE WOULD BE REACHING OUT TO THE OTHER SCHOOLS, FINDING OUT IF MAYBE THREE KIDS HAD COVID AT THAT SCHOOL AND THERE WAS AN EXTRA STAFF MEMBER AVAILABLE RIGHT.

BUT THAT NO LONGER WAS WORKING.

AND REBECCA AND MYSELF FOUND OURSELVES JUMPING INTO CLASSROOMS QUITE A BIT.

AND DIANE KIND OF NOTICED THAT AND SAID, WHY ARE YOU GUYS DOING THAT? YOU NEED TO BE DOING OTHER THINGS.

LET ME DO IT. SO WITHIN HER ROLE AS A CO-OP SECRETARY, DIANE WAS VOLUNTEERING AND HEADING OUT TO BUILDINGS.

SHE BECAME ONE OF OUR MOST GO TO PEOPLE.

HONESTLY, WITHIN OUR DISTRICT PROGRAMS, SHE'S PROBABLY SPENT, I'M GOING TO GUESS, 40 DAYS, AT LEAST PARTS OF DAYS, GOING INTO BUILDINGS THAT WERE SHORT STAFFED SO THAT THE TEACHERS COULD GET BREAKS, THE PAIRS IN THERE COULD GET BREAKS, OR SOMETIMES SHE WOULD SPEND THE WHOLE DAY THERE.

IN ADDITION TO THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A CONTRACT WITH THE ESD 112 WHO ARE PROVIDING STUDENTS THAT QUALIFY UNDER [INAUDIBLE] TRANSPORTATION FROM WHEREVER THEY END UP. SO IF THEY'RE IN, YOU KNOW, CENTRAL VANCOUVER, WE ASK ESD, HEY, WE NEED THIS FAMILIES.

THIS KID NEEDS TO GET BACK TO SCHOOL JUST LIKE CAMAS WAS SHORT STAFF, ESD WAS SHORT BUS DRIVERS ALL YEAR.

AND AGAIN, YOU KNOW, THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES I'M LIKE, I GRABBED THE VAN AND WENT AND GOT A KID.

DIANE AGAIN SAYS, ALLAN, YOU GOT WORK TO DO, SAFETY NETS COMING UP AND YOU'RE STILL NOT GETTING YOUR JOB DONE.

SO DIANE STARTED GOING AND GETTING THE VAN IN THE MORNING SO SHE WOULD COME IN BEFORE HER SHIFT STARTED, DRIVE BACK TO VANCOUVER, PICK UP TWO, THREE, FOUR STUDENTS, BRING THEM BACK TO CAMAS, DROP THEM OFF, WORK HER DAY, MAYBE GO HOME EARLY AND HAVE AN EXTENDED LUNCH BECAUSE SHE NEEDED TO BE BACK AT 3:30 TO PICK UP STUDENTS TO TAKE THEM HOME AGAIN.

SHE PROBABLY I'M GUESSING SHE DID A FEW THOUSAND MILES THIS YEAR TRANSPORTING STUDENTS.

WE PROBABLY NEED TO GET HER THAT LICENSE AT SOME POINT, BUT HOPEFULLY ESD WILL COME THROUGH ANYWAY.

SO AS FAR AS MILL TOWN PRIDE GOES, YOU KNOW, HER PERSISTENCE, HER DEDICATION TO THE COMMUNITY, HER GO GET THEM ATTITUDE, HER LOOKING AT WHERE WE

[00:05:04]

NEEDED HELP AND JUST VOLUNTEERING TO DO IT HAS BEEN GREATLY APPRECIATED AND I THINK IT'S BENEFITED OUR STUDENTS GREATLY.

SO WITH THAT, DIANE, I'D LIKE TO PRESENT YOU WITH THE MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD.

DO WE HAVE OUR [APPLAUSE] .I PROMISED DIANE I WOULDN'T MAKE HER TALK.

DID YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU WANTED TO SAY OR INTRODUCE ANYBODY THAT'S WITH YOU? ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS I MAY BE A CAMP MEMBER, BUT I AM A STAFF ASSISTANT.

I'M HERE TO HELP WHEREVER NEEDED AND IF THAT'S WHERE I WAS NEEDED.

I WAS HAPPILY WILLING TO GO.

WHEN YOU FOLLOW PEOPLE WHO SET THE EXAMPLE, IT'S EASY TO FOLLOW.

YOU SEE THEM IN CLASSROOMS. YOU SEE HIM DRIVING IN.

IT'S EASY TO JUST PICK IT UP AND SAY, OH, I'LL DO THAT.

YOU HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO [INAUDIBLE].

THANK YOU, DIANE, AND CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN.

AND THANK YOU, ALLAN.

THANK YOU AS WELL.

[3. Spotlight on Students and Staff]

WE ARE GOING TO GO ON TO ITEM 3 ON THE AGENDA.

WE'VE GOT SOME SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS HERE.

SO I'M GOING TO INVITE LORAINE SCHMID UP TO PRESENT THE THE PSE SCHOLARSHIP.

HI I'M LORRAINE SCHMID.

DO I NEED TO LOWER THIS OR CAN YOU HEAR ME? OKAY. HI, I'M LORRAINE SCHMID, WITH ME TODAY IS PATTY PLACE SHE'S MY MEMBERSHIP OFFICER.

THIS YEAR PSE CELEBRATED 55 YEARS OF IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT AS UNION MEMBERS AND WORKING COLLABORATIVE WITH THEIR DISTRICTS.

SO I'D LIKE TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT FOR ALL PARTIES INVOLVED WITH THAT MANY YEARS, 55 YEARS OF CONTRACT WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR CLASSIFIED STAFF.

THIS YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO GIVE OUT FOUR SCHOLARSHIP.

WINNERS $1,000 EACH.

IF I REMEMBER THE NAMES BECAUSE THEY CAN'T QUITE SEE THEM THERE.

BROOKLYN CHANEY.

STARTING ON THE LEFT THERE.

BROOKLYN CHANEY IS GOING TO BOISE STATE, IDAHO.

NEXT IS [INAUDIBLE] MIGHT BE SAYING HIS NAME INCORRECTLY.

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON FOR PSYCHOLOGY.

BROOKLYN'S GOING INTO EDUCATION.

I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT.

AND THEN SAVANNAH STEFFENS, SHE IS GOING TO [INAUDIBLE].

SAVANNAH NOT ONLY APPLIED FOR OUR CHAPTER PSE SCHOLARSHIP, SHE ALSO APPLIED THROUGH OUR PSE SEIU, AND IT'S VERY RARE, BUT SHE ALSO WANTED ADDITIONAL $500 SCHOLARSHIP THROUGH THROUGH HER PARENTS BEING A MEMBER.

SHE'S GOING INTO HISTORY.

SHE'S ALSO OUR FIRST CCA APPLICANT BECAUSE WE EXTENDED THAT TO ALL CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

AND THEN ON THE END IS GENEVIEVE FINN, AND SHE IS GOING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES . THIS YEAR THE SCHOLARSHIP TEAM CHANGED THEIR QUESTION FOR THEIR ESSAY, AND THEIR ESSAYS THIS YEAR WAS WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM SOMEONE WHO IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM YOU? ALL THE STUDENTS EITHER WROTE ABOUT A FRIEND THEY KNOW AT THE HIGH SCHOOL THAT HAS HELPED THEM WITH THEIR LIFE'S JOURNEY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL.

WE HAVE ONE WHO WROTE ABOUT THEIR SOCCER COACH, WHO WAS A GREAT INFLUENCE, AND THEN ANOTHER WHO WROTE ABOUT THEIR MOTHER AND THEIR GRANDPARENTS THAT THEY NOW LIVE WITH AS THEIR PARENTS.

SO IT WAS VERY, VERY REWARDING THAT THESE STUDENTS RECEIVE THIS THIS YEAR.

THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, LORRAINE.

WE'RE ALSO GOING TO HEAR ABOUT OUR SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS FROM CEA.

SHELLEY, ARE YOU GOING TO BE DOING THAT? OKAY, GREAT. COME ON UP.

AND I HAVE TWO OF OUR WINNERS WITH ME, SO I'M HOPING THAT THEY'LL COME UP.

[INAUDIBLE] SO I'M GOING TO INTRODUCE YOU TO ALL FOUR OF OUR WINNERS.

[00:10:06]

I'M SHELLEY HULL, PRESIDENT OF CAMAS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION FOR THREE MORE DAYS, AND I NEED MY READING GLASSES, WHO'S COUNTING? OVER A DOZEN APPLICANTS FROM CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, HAYS FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN FOR THE FIRST TIME, DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL AND CAMAS CONNECT ACADEMY WERE REVIEWED BY OUR [INAUDIBLE] I'M SORRY, BY OUR CAMAS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE, CHAIRED BY FORMER VICE PRESIDENT ERIC LINTHWAITE.

IN ADDITION, ALL 460 PLUS MEMBERS GOT A CHANCE TO REVIEW THE APPLICATIONS AND WEIGH IN.

OUR SCHOLARSHIP IS OPEN TO ANY CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT SENIOR WHO WANTS TO PURSUE A DEGREE IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION.

SO NOT JUST TEACHING. IT COULD BE SOMEBODY WHO WANTS TO BE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS, SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS, ETC.

THEY HAD A REALLY TOUGH TIME DECIDING BECAUSE ALL 16 APPLICANTS WERE EXCELLENT AND RECEIVED HIGH PRAISE FROM THEIR CURRENT AND PAST TEACHERS.

THE FOUR THAT STOOD OUT THOUGH I AM EXCITED TO PRESENT TO YOU.

SO THE SECOND WINNER, ALEX DANKU, HE GRADUATED FROM CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL IS GOING TO WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY.

[INAUDIBLE] I BOTH WENT THERE.

GO VIKINGS. YES.

HE WANTS TO TEACH HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH AND IN HIS ESSAY HE WROTE, I HOPE TO USE THIS FOR BETTERMENT OF NOT ONLY ME, NOT ONLY MY LIFE, BUT THE LIVES OF FUTURE STUDENTS.

I WILL TEACH AND HOPEFULLY INSPIRE LIKE MY PAST TEACHERS HAVE DONE FOR ME.

ONE OF HIS TEACHERS WROTE THIS ABOUT ALEX.

ALEX IS A FABULOUS HUMAN WHO IS A KIND, CARING AND UNDERSTANDING PERSON TO ALL.

SO WELL DESERVED.

NEXT THIRD PERSON PICTURED IS SIMONE HOUSTON FROM CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

SHE IS HEADED TO CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY AND WOULD LIKE TO TEACH FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE, GIRL AFTER MY OWN HEART.

HER NAME SOUNDS FAMILIAR. SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF CEA MEMBERS MICHELLE AND RICK HOUSTON.

SIMONE DID HER SENIOR PROJECT WITH CEA MEMBER SUE COLEMAN, A FOURTH GRADE TEACHER AT PRUNE HILL.

OF THE EXPERIENCE, SIMONE WROTE, I HAVE LEARNED TO INTERACT WITH STUDENTS, MAKE CONNECTIONS AND BUILD RELATIONSHIPS.

ONE OF SIMONE'S SIXTH GRADE TEACHERS WROTE THAT SIMONE IS A HARD WORKER, KIND, COMPASSIONATE, AND EXHIBITS ALL THE QUALITIES OF AN OUTSTANDING STUDENT AND CITIZENS.

AND NEXT, WE HAVE ALEXA GAUDIO, AND I WILL HAVE HER TELL YOU WHERE SHE ATTENDED SCHOOL AND PLANS FOR THE FALL.

AND MAYBE I CAN JUST BRING THIS TO YOU.

SO TELL US WHERE YOU WENT TO SCHOOL AND YOUR PLANS FOR THE FALL.

OKAY. I WENT TO SCHOOL AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, AND NEXT YEAR I'M ATTENDING LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY, WHICH IS IN CALIFORNIA.

AND I'M GOING TO MAJOR IN PSYCHOLOGY AS WELL AS GET MY TEACHING CERTIFICATE AND THEN GET A MASTER'S [APPLAUSE]. SO ALEXA WROTE ABOUT HER VARIED EXPERIENCES WORKING WITH CHILDREN AND SAID THE CONNECTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS I'VE MADE WITH THE STUDENTS THAT I INTERACTED WITH ARE MORE THAN I EVER EXPECTED.

THESE CHILDREN ARE DEFINITELY PART OF MY HEART.

CEA MEMBER MENTIONED THAT ALEXA DID A WORK BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT JDZ AND THAT ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR TEACHING CREDENTIALS, PLEASE APPLY.

SO AGAIN, MORE HIGH PRAISE.

AND THEN FINALLY WE HAVE OLIVIA, I WANT TO SAY CORRECTLY, VANDEL.

YES. YES.

TELL US ABOUT WHERE YOU WENT TO SCHOOL AND YOUR PLANS FOR THE FALL.

SO I GRADUATED FROM CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, AND NEXT YEAR I'M GOING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND TO STUDY ELEMENTARY EDUCATION AND GET MY MATH ENDORSEMENT SO I CAN BE A MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEACHER [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU.

IN OLIVIA'S ESSAY, SHE DESCRIBED HER EXPERIENCE BEING THE CHILD OF TWO TEACHERS, NOT FROM CAMAS, BUT DEFINITELY I THINK MY OWN CHILDREN WOULD IDENTIFY WITH MUCH OF WHAT YOU SAID AND THEN HOW BEING A SOCCER COACH HAS INSPIRED HER.

SHE WROTE, TEACHING IS MY PASSION, WHETHER I'M COACHING MY TEAM OR TUTORING A FELLOW STUDENT IN ALGEBRA TWO.

I KNOW THIS IS WHAT I AM MEANT TO DO.

AND THEN, WELL, I HAVE TO SAY, A LOT OF TEACHERS GAVE YOU PRAISE.

ONE WROTE AN ESSAY THAT WAS LONGER THAN YOUR ESSAY WHY WE SHOULD GIVE IT TO YOU.

BUT THE BEST QUOTE ACTUALLY CAME FROM A SHORTER RECOMMENDATION THAT SIMPLY, SIMPLY SAID OLIVIA VANDEL IS READY TO START TEACHING RIGHT NOW.

SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

APPLAUSE FOR ALL FOUR OF THESE GREAT APPLICANTS AND WINNERS [APPLAUSE].

THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE RECIPIENTS.

AND THANKS, LORRAINE AND SHELLY FOR PRESENTING.

IT'S AWESOME TO SEE OUR STAFF GIVING BACK TO OUR STUDENTS IN MORE THAN JUST A QUALITY EDUCATION.

[4. BOARD COMMUNICATIONS]

SO WITH THAT, LET'S MOVE ON TO ITEM 4 BOARD COMMUNICATIONS BEFORE I TURN IT OVER TO ALL OF YOU.

I FORGOT TO MENTION AT THE BEGINNING THAT TRACEY MALONE IS NOT IN ATTENDANCE TONIGHT, SO WE'LL EXCUSE HER.

I ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT SITTING NEXT TO ME FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE DAIS IS DR.

[00:15:07]

JOHN ANZALONE, OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT.

HE WILL BE INTRODUCING HIMSELF A LITTLE BIT LATER ON WITH A SONG AND DANCE AND SKIT AND ALL OF THAT.

I'M SURE IT'LL BE GREAT, BUT I ALSO WANTED TO MAKE SURE TO WE ACKNOWLEDGED HIM AT THE THE WORK SESSION A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, BUT ALSO JUST WANT TO SAY ONE MORE TIME THANK YOU TO DOUG HOOD, OUR INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT, WHO'S HANDING OVER THE REINS.

DOUG STEPPED IN AT A TIME WHEN IT WOULD BE TOUGH TO STEP INTO ANY ROLE.

BUT KNOWING THAT, KNOWING THAT HE WAS JUST COMING IN AS A PLACEHOLDER TO KEEP THE KEEP THE LIGHTS ON IN THE DISTRICT.

WE REALLY APPRECIATE HIS HARD WORK THERE.

I DID WANT TO MENTION TO THE BOARD REALLY QUICK, ON JULY 25TH, WE HAVE OUR PLANNING SESSION, WHICH WILL BE AN ALL DAY EVENT.

WE'LL HAVE A SCHEDULE FOR YOU PROBABLY IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS.

BUT I'M GOING TO BE MEETING WITH DR.

ANZALONE ON JULY 5TH, KIND OF PUTTING A SCHEDULE TOGETHER FOR THAT.

I DID REALLY WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S DRIVEN BY YOUR NEEDS AND WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO TALK ABOUT AND ACCOMPLISH.

SO IF YOU CAN MAKE SURE THAT YOU SEND ME THINGS THAT YOU WANT TO COVER AT THE PLANNING SESSION, IF YOU CAN SEND THAT BEFORE JULY 5TH, THAT'D BE GREAT.

I'M MEETING WITH WITH DR.

ANZALONE AT IN THE MORNING ON THE FIFTH, SO WE'LL PUT THAT TOGETHER.

ALSO WANTED TO MENTION THAT I HAD A GREAT MEETING WITH OUR NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, STEPHEN BARANOWSKI AND I HAVE INVITED HIM TO OUR PLANNING SESSION TO KIND OF TALK ABOUT KIND OF HIS PLANS GOING FORWARD FOR ATHLETICS.

I KNOW HE'S REALLY STILL HE WAS UNPACKING HIS OFFICE WHEN I WAS THERE, BUT HE'S HE'S REALLY STARTING TO DIVE IN, MEETING WITH COACHES AND PLAYERS AND FAMILIES WORKING ON A NEW STUDENT ATHLETE HANDBOOK, WHICH I THINK IS GOING TO BE GREAT.

SO ANYWAYS, THOSE ARE MY THINGS TO SHARE, BUT TURN IT OVER TO YOU IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WANTED TO SHARE.

I JUST FINISHED A BRIEF CONVERSATION WITH OUR FRIENDS AT THE CITY.

AND COREY AND I WERE AND JOHN WERE ALL PRESENT IN THAT CONVERSATION.

LOTS OF GOOD TOPICS.

I THINK THE ONE THAT RESONATED ONE OF THE MOST WITH ME WAS, OF COURSE, THE WHOLE LAND USE CONVERSATION AROUND FUTURE GROWTH, HOW WE WOULD COORDINATE AND ADVOCATE MAYBE FOR A MORE EFFICIENT USE OF THOSE PROPERTIES.

AND THEN THE SECOND ELEMENT THAT WAS IS THE SCHOOL SECURITY SCHOOL SAFETY ELEMENT.

WHICH I THINK IS BEEN ON EVERYBODY'S MIND AS OF LATE.

SO THAT WAS A GOOD CONVERSATION, WENT OVER A LOT OF OTHER TOPICS.

BUT I'LL LEAVE THOSE FOR COREY OR JOHN IF THEY WANTED TO TOUCH ON THIS.

THE ONLY THING I WOULD SAY IS THERE WAS A LOT THAT THE CITY BROUGHT TO THE AGENDA AND THEY KEPT POINTING BACK TO THE ENGAGE CAMAS WEBSITE.

SO FOLKS OUT THERE GO TO THE ENGAGE CAMAS WEBSITE TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE CITY.

IT'S A PRETTY GREAT TOOL. YES, IT IS.

I'LL JUST MENTION BRIEFLY THAT I ATTENDED WAS THE LUNCHEON LEARN OR NETWORKING LAST THURSDAY.

THEY STARTED THEM BACK UP ON THURSDAYS AT NOON.

THIS ONE WAS TALKING ABOUT PREPAREDNESS FOR BARGAINING AND GETTING COMMUNICATIONS PLANS TOGETHER WITHIN BOARDS PRIOR TO AND THAT WAS THE THAT WAS IT.

SO TYPICALLY AND THEN IT WAS OPEN FLOOR [INAUDIBLE] GOOD THINGS HAPPENING AROUND THE STATE BUT TYPICALLY IT HAD STARTED AS A LUNCH AND LEARN OF HOW DIFFERENT DISTRICTS WERE WORKING THROUGH COVID AND SHUT DOWN AND NOW THEY WANT TO KEEP THEM GOING BECAUSE PEOPLE VALUE THEM SO MUCH, THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET TOGETHER AND LEARN AND SO THEY'LL DO THEM BY TOPICS NOW.

SO EVERY OTHER WEEK.

YEAH. SO LIKE THIS ONE WAS BARGAINING AND THEY'LL KEEP GOING.

YEAH. SO.

SO. ALL RIGHT.

I BELIEVE THAT THAT'S IT FOR BOARD COMMUNICATION.

[5. PUBLIC COMMENTS]

SO WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO PUBLIC COMMENTS.

AND IT LOOKS LIKE I'VE GOT TWO PUBLIC COMMENTS UP HERE.

BUT BEFORE WE GET GOING, JUST MY TYPICAL SPIEL BEFORE THE BOARD VALUES PUBLIC INPUT, THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD IS TO ACTIVELY LISTEN AND REFLECT ON PUBLIC COMMENTS. THE BOARD MAY ONLY DISCUSS AND ACT UPON ITEMS INCLUDED ON THE WRITTEN AGENDA.

FOR THAT REASON, BOARD MEMBERS CANNOT RESPOND TO ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS DURING PUBLIC COMMENT, BUT CAN ASK THE SUPERINTENDENT TO FOLLOW UP ON ISSUES RAISED DURING PUBLIC TESTIMONY. GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC INPUT EMPHASIZE THE RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS.

BOISTEROUS CONDUCT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AT ANY MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, NOR WILL ANY HARASSING OR THREATENING REMARKS BE TOLERATED.

[00:20:03]

COMPLAINTS ABOUT INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE AS A PERSONNEL MATTER.

EACH PERSON PROVIDING PUBLIC COMMENT WILL HAVE A TOTAL OF 3 MINUTES.

ONCE CALLED UPON, PLEASE STEP UP TO THE PODIUM.

THE MICROPHONE HERE, FACE THE BOARD AND STATE YOUR NAME FOR THE RECORD.

THE BELL WILL RING AT 3 MINUTES TO REMIND YOU THAT YOUR TIME IS UP.

SO, LIKE I SAID, WE DID HAVE TWO FOLKS SIGN UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENT.

FIRST ONE WAS SHELLY HULL.

SHELLY HULL, CAMAS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT FOR THREE MORE DAYS, ALSO A FIFTH GRADE TEACHER AT HELEN FOWLER FOR 20 YEARS.

SO MY OFFICIAL LAST MEETING AND NORMALLY I DON'T WING IT.

I HAD PLANS TO WRITE SOMETHING AMAZING TO SEE HOW MUCH DAMAGE OR GOOD I COULD DO IN MY LAST THREE DAYS.

BUT I WAS TOO TIRED.

MOSTLY, I WANT TO EXPLAIN WHY TEACHERS ARE SO TIRED AFTER THIS YEAR, AND I WAS TOO TIRED TO DO THAT.

BUT IF YOU REALLY WERE INTERESTED, YOU COULD PROBABLY LOOK ON TIK TOK OR FACEBOOK OR TWITTER AND JUST GOOGLE WHY TEACHERS ARE SO TIRED AFTER THE 2020 122 SCHOOL YEAR.

AND YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I KNOW.

SO HOPEFULLY OUR TEACHERS AND EDUCATORS ARE ABLE TO RECHARGE THIS SUMMER AND COME BACK READY.

I THINK THE COMMON GROUND THAT WE ALL SHARE IS THAT WE CARE AND LOVE AND WANT TO SERVE OUR STUDENTS TO THE BEST THAT WE CAN.

AND HOPEFULLY THIS FALL, WE ARE READY TO DO THAT.

I HAVE EIGHT YEARS ON THE EXECUTIVE BOARD AND CONNIE AND DOUG WERE HERE WHEN I STARTED AND DOREEN EVERYBODY ELSE HAS CHANGED.

I THINK YOU'RE THE THIRD SUPERINTENDENT TO SIT IN THAT CHAIR SINCE I STARTED.

AND YEAH, LOTS OF SECOND HR DIRECTOR AND I THINK JASON EVEN CAME AFTER ME.

SO IT'S BEEN AN INTERESTING RIDE THESE LAST EIGHT YEARS AND FOUR YEARS AS PRESIDENT.

I THINK WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED MANY GREAT THINGS TOGETHER AND IT DEFINITELY HAS BEEN A ROLLER COASTER AS WE NAVIGATED THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

I DO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

YOU HAVE REALLY SHOWN TEACHERS THAT YOU CARE.

WE HAVE COME TO AGREEMENTS, I THINK, THAT HAVE BENEFITED TEACHERS, AND THOSE AGREEMENTS HAVE HELPED TEACHERS SERVE THEIR STUDENTS TO THE BEST THAT THEY CAN.

SO I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT.

AND I WILL BE SUPPORTING [INAUDIBLE] AS SHE TAKES OVER THE REINS AND THE REST OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD.

SO I WILL STILL BE HERE IN CAMAS, JUST ACROSS THE STREET, BUT FULL TIME IN MY CLASSROOM.

THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU, SHELLY.

OUR NEXT PUBLIC COMMENT IS BRANDON COLLIER.

HI. MY NAME IS BRANDAN COLLIER AND I'M COMING BEFORE YOU AS AN EXTREMELY CONCERNED PARENT OF A RISING DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR AND A RISING FIRST GRADER.

MY INTENT IS TO ENSURE THE CAMAS COMMUNITY IS AWARE OF HOW THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS HANDLING THE CAMAS WRESTLING COACH TRAGEDY, IMPLORE YOU TO UPHOLD YOUR OATH AND SUPPORTIVE SCHOOL POLICY AND TO FORMALLY REQUEST AN EMERGENCY PUBLIC MEETING FOR THE PARENTS OF THE GIRLS WRESTLING TEAM.

AS ELECTED OFFICIALS ON CAMAS DISTRICTS 117 SCHOOL BOARD, YOU HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY AND MORAL OBLIGATION TO DEMONSTRATE THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING THE RIGHT THING AND PROTECTING OTHERS TO OUR NEXT GENERATION OF STUDENTS.

ON JUNE 14TH, MY WIFE AND I, ALONG WITH OUR DAUGHTER, A GIRLS WRESTLER.

LEARNED ABOUT THE ARRESTS OF MARK YAMASHITA IN MAY FROM AN ARTICLE RELEASED BY THE COLOMBIAN.

SINCE LEARNING ABOUT THIS, I CORRESPONDED WITH INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT DOUG HOOD, WRESTLING COACH [INAUDIBLE] AND NEWLY APPOINTED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR STEVEN BARANOWSKI TO ASK WHY WE WERE NOT NOTIFIED BY THE SCHOOL.

UNFORTUNATELY, MY CONVERSATIONS DID NOT PROVE BENEFICIAL DUE TO SEVERAL REASONS, AND IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS NOT GIVING THIS MATTER THE DEDICATION IT DESERVES.

I CAN ASSURE YOU, BASED ON THE UNKNOWNS CIRCULATING AROUND THE SCHOOL'S INVOLVEMENT, THERE ARE SEVERAL QUESTIONS THAT DESERVE ANSWERS.

AFTER SPEAKING WITH OUR WRESTLERS, THE PERCEIVED ASSUMPTION TAKEN BY THE SCHOOL SYSTEM THAT NO OTHER STUDENT WAS HARMED.

BY THE ACTIONS OF MARK [INAUDIBLE].

AT A MINIMUM, THESE YOUNG WOMEN ATTEMPTED TO VOICE THEIR CONCERNS TO OTHER ADULTS, INCLUDING CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT EMPLOYEES, AND THE POTENTIAL THESE CONCERNS WERE IGNORED, THEREBY RESULTING IN ADDITIONAL HARM IS HEARTBREAKING, TO SAY THE LEAST.

WE'RE STILL. EXCUSE ME.

TO THE BEST OF OUR KNOWLEDGE, THE FACULTY INVOLVEMENT HAS NOT BEEN FURTHER INVESTIGATED TO DETERMINE IF THERE ARE OTHER MEMBERS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY WHO HAVE BEEN VICTIMIZED OR OTHER RESPONSIBLE ADULTS WHO FAILED TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN.

ADDITIONALLY, I HAVE IDENTIFIED SEVERAL OTHER POTENTIAL SCHOOL POLICY VIOLATIONS OCCURRING DURING THE MANAGEMENT OF THE WOMEN'S WRESTLING TEAM IN DISTRICT 117.

FAILURE TO ACT AND COMMUNICATE SUFFICIENTLY FOLLOWING MARK YAMASHITA ARREST IN MAY.

IN CLOSING MY WIFE AND I CARE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN VERY MUCH AND UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTING WITH INTEGRITY.

[00:25:06]

WE BELIEVE THERE ARE TIMES IN LIFE WHEN YOU MUST STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT.

A SENTIMENT SHARED BY OTHER CONCERNED PARENTS.

AS VOLUNTEERS TO A LIFETIME OF MILITARY SERVICE.

MY WIFE AND I ARE WILLING TO SACRIFICE OUR LIVES TO UPHOLD THESE VALUES IN BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC AFFAIRS.

THERE'S NO DOUBT TO US, EXCUSE ME THAT THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIMES.

PLEASE HELP US SUPPORT THE YOUNG WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN TERRIBLY IMPACTED BY THIS INCIDENT.

I IMPLORE YOU TO HOLD AN EMERGENCY SESSION WITH THE PARENTS OF THE FEMALE WRESTLERS AND ENGAGE IN DIALOG TO ADDRESS THEIR CONCERNS.

CONDUCT THE INVESTIGATION.

YOU ARE MANDATED TO DO SO BY SCHOOL POLICY 3205 INVESTIGATION AND RESPONSE AND HOLD ANYONE FOUND NEGLIGENT ACCOUNTABLE.

WE OWE IT TO THEM FOR THE BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS THEY HAVE INVESTED IN EACH OTHER.

WE OWE IT TO THE STUDENT ATHLETES WHO COME BEHIND THEM, AND YOU OWE IT TO THE CAMAS COMMUNITY TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN.

AND BECAUSE OF THIS, I KNOW YOU ALL WILL DO THE RIGHT THING.

HAVE A FEW MORE SECONDS SO I CAN TELL I'M VERY PASSIONATE AND EMOTIONAL ABOUT THIS AND I WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE IT AS WELL AS THE OTHER PARENTS OF HAVING A SIT DOWN MEETING WITH YOU GUYS TO ASK OUR QUESTIONS AND HOPEFULLY GET SOME ANSWERS.

THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU. THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF PUBLIC COMMENTS.

[6. ITEMS ADDED TO THE CONSENT AGENDA]

[7. CONSENT AGENDA]

EVERYBODY SAW THE THE ADDENDUM TO HUMAN RESOURCES THAT WAS ADDED TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.

WITH THAT, I WOULD ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA.

I WOULD MOVE TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA WITH ADDENDUM, SECOND.

SO IT WAS MOVED BY DOUG AND SECONDED BY CONNIE, ANY DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR AYE, AYE.

OPPOSED. OKAY.

MOTION CARRIES. ALL RIGHT.

[8. OPEN AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICAITONS]

NEXT ON THE AGENDA, ITEM NUMBER8, OPEN AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION.

8A BOARD REVIEW FOR ADOPTION OF SECOND STEP SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING FOR GRADES K-5.

I BELIEVE WE HAVE.

LISA, YOU'RE GOING TO GET US STARTED WITH THIS.

INDEED. THANK YOU.

SO WE ARE HERE THIS EVENING TO REQUEST BOARD APPROVAL FOR A CORE CURRICULUM.

THAT'S THE FIRST REQUEST.

IT WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A SECOND REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF A THREE YEAR CONTRACT FOR SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING CONTENT.

AND THIS EVENING WITH ME PRESENTING ARE EVAN LUSTIG, WHO CURRENTLY SERVES AS THE INSTRUCTIONAL EQUITY COACH AT LACAMAS LAKE ELEMENTARY, AND JENNIFER MCMILLAN, WHO I ALWAYS HAVE TO WRITE HER TITLE DOWN BECAUSE I NEVER GET IT RIGHT, IS OUR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELLNESS LIAISON.

AND THESE TWO PEOPLE ARE SO VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THE CONDITIONS AND CONTEXT THAT WE PROVIDE FOR STUDENTS TO GROW, LEARN THE SKILLS, BECOME THE BEST PERSON THAT THEY CAN BE, UNDERSTANDING HOW WELL THAT CONNECTS TO HOW THEY CAN LEARN IN OUR SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS.

AND SO THE SHORT ANSWER TO WHY NOW IS THAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE LAW FOR COMPREHENSIVE SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION IN WASHINGTON STATE, AND THAT LAW, WITH THE MISCOMMUNICATION AND MISUNDERSTANDING BEFORE IT WAS PASSED, THERE WAS SOME CONCERN THAT K-3 WOULD HAVE SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION CONTENT IN THOSE GRADES.

AND THE ANSWER IS NO, THEY DON'T HAVE SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION CONTENT IN THOSE GRADES.

AND TO MAKE THAT CLEAR, WHAT THE LAW REQUIRES IS THAT WE PUT IN A SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING PROGRAM IN GRADES K-2.

AND SO THE FIRST PLACE THAT WE START FROM IS COMPLIANCE WITH THE LAW.

BUT THE LAW EXISTS FOR A REASON, AND THAT'S REALLY WHAT WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE YOU INTO NOW.

YOU KNOW THAT IN CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT WE HAVE FOCUSED ON SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS FOR A LONG TIME NOW AND ALSO INCREASED OUR EFFORTS IN THAT DIRECTION WITH THE START OF THE PANDEMIC, KNOWING THAT OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF WERE EXPERIENCING THINGS THAT HAD NEVER BEEN EXPERIENCED IN OUR LIFETIMES, AND KNOWING THAT THE SUPPORTS WOULD NEED TO BE IN PLACE SO THAT AGAIN, STUDENTS HAD THAT SUPPORT THEY NEEDED TO BE ABLE TO LEARN.

AND SO WITH THAT, I WILL TURN IT OVER NOW TO JENNIFER AND EVAN, WHO WILL BRING THEIR PASSION TO THE FRONT AND LET YOU KNOW EXACTLY THE PROCESS WE'VE GONE THROUGH, AS YOU WOULD EXPECT US TO DO BY POLICY AND PROCEDURE IN ORDER TO GET TO THIS PLACE WITH YOU TODAY.

I AM LIKE THE LOUDEST PERSON EVER.

I REALLY DON'T THINK YOU WANT ME TO HAVE A MICROPHONE.

[00:30:02]

OH, MY GOSH.

OKAY. I'M GOING TO HOLD IT LIKE THIS.

YES. YEAH.

I CAN'T HEAR IT AT HOME.

OKAY. I'VE BEEN TOLD TO TURN IT DOWN BEFORE, SO IF YOU NEED ME TO DO THAT, GO AHEAD.

SO. WE'RE SO EXCITED TO BE HERE.

HONESTLY, EVAN AND I, THEY PUT THE TWO PEOPLE THAT COULDN'T BE MORE PUMPED UP ABOUT THIS STUFF TOGETHER.

SO WE OFTEN HAD TO BRING OURSELVES DOWN A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE WE'D GET GOING ABOUT THIS STUFF.

SO WE'RE GOING TO GO BACK AND FORTH WITH THE SLIDES, BUT WE'RE BOTH EQUALLY PASSIONATE AND CAN SPEAK TO ANY OF THESE.

BUT LISA SPOKE TO THE LAW AND WHY WE ARE REALLY ADDRESSING FINDING A CURRICULUM NOW.

THE OTHER THING THAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT IS REALLY THE BENEFITS OF FINDING A CURRICULUM, A K-5, COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM.

SO I COULD GO ON AND ON AND ON ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF AN SEL CURRICULUM, SOMETHING THAT REALLY DRAWS ATTENTION AND DRAWS FOCUS INTO PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS TO BUILD COMMUNITY, TO REALLY TAKE A LOOK AT THEIR INTERNAL SYSTEM AND LEARN THOSE EMOTIONAL SKILLS THAT WE KNOW ARE LIFELONG SKILLS.

RIGHT. SO RESEARCH REALLY TELLS US THAT FINDING A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM CAN FOCUS ON THINGS LIKE INCREASING REGULATION, THE ABILITY TO REGULATE YOUR EMOTIONS THROUGH THE UPS AND DOWNS OF LIFE.

WE ALSO KNOW THAT ATTENTION AND FOCUS CAN BE ADDRESSED USING A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM PROBLEM SOLVING, SOLVING PROBLEMS, RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS, AND JUST YOUR OWN PROBLEM SOLVING, BUILDING AND MAINTAINING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS.

SO FIGURING OUT THOSE WAYS TO MANAGE WHAT RELATIONSHIPS REQUIRE OF US CRITICAL THINKING, WAYS TO SET AND ACHIEVE GOALS.

THERE'S LOADS OF RESEARCH AROUND THIS AND WE REALLY FOCUS A LOT OF OUR TIME ON FIGURING OUT HOW DO WE DO THIS WELL . WHAT IS THAT PROCESS REALLY GOING TO LOOK LIKE THAT GETS US TO THE RIGHT CURRICULUM? SO. I WANT TO TAKE YOU THROUGH OUR PROCESS.

SO EVAN AND I LOVE TALKING TO PEOPLE, AND THIS YEAR WE SPENT A TON OF TIME TALKING TO THE VOICES IN OUR COMMUNITY, SPECIFICALLY AROUND SEL.

SO IN THE FALL WE WENT OUT AND WE GATHERED FEEDBACK FROM THE LEADERS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND IN TERMS OF THE ADMINISTRATORS AND COUNSELORS DOING THIS WORK, AND WE SAID, WHAT ARE YOU DOING AND WHAT'S WORKING? WHAT ARE THE AREAS THAT YOU FEEL LIKE NEED TO GET SHORED UP? LIKE, WHERE ARE THE GAPS? WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AROUND THIS WORK? AND WE SPENT TIME WITH THEM REALLY GATHERING THEIR FEEDBACK.

THEN WE TAPPED INTO OUR NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS BECAUSE WHY NOT LEARN FROM PEOPLE THAT HAVE TRIED AND STUMBLED, RIGHT? AND SO WE HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO TALK TO DISTRICTS AROUND US THAT HAVE TRIED TO ROLL OUT SEL PROGRAMS. AND THEY WERE THEY GAVE US LOTS OF REALLY GOOD INFORMATION, LOTS OF MISSTEPS THAT THEY HAD.

AND THEY REALLY ENCOURAGED US TO BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT THE WAY THAT WE DID THIS.

SO THEN WE CREATED A RUBRIC AND EVAN HAS THE RUBRIC HE'S GOING TO SHOW YOU.

AND THIS IS THE RUBRIC IN WHICH WE ASKED FOLKS TO REALLY LOOK AT TWO PROGRAMS. SO WE IDENTIFIED TWO DIFFERENT SEL, K-5 PROGRAMS TO REALLY MOVE IN DEPTH WITH.

SO WE MOVED FROM THAT TO GATHERING VOICES FROM THE ON THE FIELD PROVIDERS, RIGHT? SO WE GATHERED TEACHERS, A TEACHER FROM EVERY SCHOOL, INCLUDING CCA AND WE HAD EVERY GRADE COVERED.

SO WE HAD A K-5 TEACHER FROM NOT ONE FROM EVERY BUILDING, BUT WE HAD ONE FROM EVERY GRADE AND ONE FROM AT LEAST EVERY BUILDING.

AND WE BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER AND WE ASKED THEM SOMETHING PRETTY BIG.

WE ASKED THEM TO TAKE TIME TO REALLY LOOK AT THESE TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS. AND THEN WE ASKED THEM TO IMPLEMENT LESSONS FROM EACH OF THE PROGRAMS ON SIMILAR TOPICS.

SO WE WANTED WE WANTED THEM TO SEE A SECOND STEP LESSON ON EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND THEN A HARMONY LESSON ON EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND REALLY COMPARE THE TWO.

AND THEN WE ASKED THEM TO TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER AND AFTER EACH LESSON TO GATHER STUDENT VOICE.

SO WE REALLY WANTED TO HEAR FROM KIDS LIKE, DID THIS MEET THE TARGET? DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING? LIKE WHAT WAS IT THAT KIND OF DREW YOU IN IN EACH OF THESE LESSONS?

[00:35:01]

AND WE KNOW WHEN WE ASK KIDS, THEY GIVE US THE REAL DEAL.

SO THEY CAME BACK TO US WITH LOTS OF RICH INFORMATION.

THEY HAD LOTS OF FEEDBACK, THEY HAD LOTS OF OPINIONS, AND THEY DIDN'T TAKE THIS WORK LIGHTLY AT ALL.

THEY WANTED TO BE VERY THOUGHTFUL ABOUT REPRESENTING THEIR TEACHER COLLEAGUES.

AND THEY THEY GAVE US LOTS OF REALLY GOOD FEEDBACK.

WE ALSO HAD A FAMILY GROUP, SO WE NEEDED TO HEAR FROM PARENTS.

AND THIS FOR ME, LIKE I, YOU KNOW, I WILL SIT DOWN WITH ANY PARENT ANYTIME.

I LOVE TALKING TO PARENTS AND WE HAD A GREAT TIME TALKING ABOUT SEL IN GENERAL.

THEY HAD SO MANY QUESTIONS AND THEY HAD SO MANY IDEAS FOR US TO THINK ABOUT IN TERMS OF HOW DO WE PARTNER? HOW DO THEY KNOW THE TOPICS THAT TEACHERS ARE WORKING ON? LIKE, TELL ME WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THAT.

SO WE CAN WE CAN EXTEND THAT TALK TO HOME, RIGHT? SO WE GATHERED INFORMATION FROM THEM.

SO AT THAT POINT WE FELT LIKE WE REALLY HAD TEACHER FEEDBACK.

WE HAD STUDENT FEEDBACK AND WE HAD PARENT FEEDBACK.

SO THEN WE TOOK ALL OF THAT INFORMATION AND WE AGAIN SHARED THAT INFORMATION IN THE RUBRIC WITH PRINCIPALS AND COUNSELORS AND WE ALLOWED FEEDBACK FROM THEM.

THEN EVAN AND I TOOK IT IN FRONT OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE, AND THEN WE FOUND OUT THAT THE BUDGETING, THE FUNDING WAS GOOD, AND NOW WE'RE HERE WITH YOU.

SO THAT'S KIND OF THE LONG JOURNEY TO WHAT WE DID.

WE SO ENJOYED BEING TOGETHER AND GOING ON THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER, AND NOW EVAN'S GOING TO TALK TO YOU SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE CURRICULUM THAT WE ENDED UP FOCUSING ON.

SECOND STEP.

MY TURN. HI, EVERYBODY.

SO WE HAVE DECIDED TO GO WITH SECOND STEP FOR OUR PROGRAM FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE TEACHERS TO USE IN THEIR CORE INSTRUCTION TO SUPPORT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

WE GOT FEEDBACK FROM OUR TEACHERS AND FROM OUR STUDENTS AS WELL, AND OVERWHELMINGLY SECOND STEP CAME OUT ON TOP.

IT WAS ENGAGING FOR STUDENTS.

IT WAS EASY TO MANEUVER FOR TEACHERS, AND THAT WAS A BIG VARIABILITY PIECE TO PAY ATTENTION TO, ESPECIALLY IN CONNECTION TO HARMONY.

THE ONE THAT WE LOOKED AT WAS JUST NOT AS EASY TO NAVIGATE.

TOOK MORE TIME TO FIND THE COMPONENTS AND PIECES FOR TEACHERS AND FOR STUDENTS.

SO WE KNOW THAT IF THIS IS EASY TO MANEUVER AND NAVIGATE, IT WILL BE USED, WHICH IS A BIG PIECE OF WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR.

WE NEED TO SUPPORT STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN THEIR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

THE OTHER PIECE OF THIS IS THAT ANYONE CAN DO THIS.

THERE'S NO TRAINING OR PREPARATION NECESSARILY NEEDED FOR TEACHERS TO USE A SECOND STEP LESSON.

THAT BEING SAID, THERE ARE TRAINING MODULES THAT ARE PRESENT SO THAT IF YOU WANT TO DIG IN DEEPER OR YOU HAVE SOME QUESTIONS THAT REMAIN, YOU CAN FIND TRAINING MODULES TO ATTEND AND THEY'RE ALL WEBINARS.

THE OTHER PIECE OF SECOND STEP IS OUR COUNSELORS HAVE BEEN USING SECOND STEP IN THE BUILDINGS FOR YEARS, AND SO WE HAVE EXPERTS IN BUILDING ALREADY, WHICH IS REALLY NICE.

THE THING ABOUT THESE LESSONS IS THAT THEY'RE 20 TO 25 MINUTES WITH PRACTICE IN CHECK AND THEY'RE BITE SIZED LESSONS.

THERE'S SOME ADAPTABILITY THAT YOU COULD DO WITH 20 TO 25 MINUTE LESSON AT ONCE, OR YOU COULD CHUNK IT INTO A FEW MINUTES EACH DAY FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE, WHICH IS NICE. THERE ARE VIDEOS, COMPONENTS TO IT.

THEY'RE KIND OF SECOND STEP IS THE PROGRAM THAT YOU MAY REMEMBER HAS THE POSTERS THAT YOU SIT IN A CIRCLE AND TALK ABOUT.

SO IT STILL HAS THOSE POSTERS AND PICTURES, BUT THERE ARE VIDEOS AS WELL THAT HELPED KEEP KIDS ENGAGED AND HELPED MOVE THE LESSONS ALONG.

THE BIG PIECE THAT WE WERE QUESTIONING OR CURIOUS ABOUT WAS THE SEL STANDARDS.

SO WE HAVE THE CASTLE STANDARDS THAT WE ALL KNOW ABOUT AND WE HAVE THE WASHINGTON STATE STANDARDS.

AND SECOND STEP ALIGNS WITH BOTH OF THOSE VERY CLOSELY.

ANOTHER ASPECT THAT WAS IMPORTANT WAS THE MULTIPLE LANGUAGES WE HAVE.

WE HAVE A VARIETY OF LEARNERS AND ACCESS POINTS FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR FAMILIES THAT WE CAN FIND THESE LESSONS IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES.

THERE ARE THESE HOME LETTER COMPONENTS WHICH TIES IN TO WHAT WHAT JENNIFER WAS TALKING ABOUT.

THESE QUESTIONS OUR FAMILIES HAD WHEN WE TALKED WITH THEM IS HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TEACHING AND HOW DO WE SUPPORT THAT AT HOME? THE HOME LETTER COMPONENT FOR A SECOND STEP WAS UNIQUE IN THAT IT HAS A UNIT OVERVIEW.

SO WHEN YOU START A UNIT, YOU CAN SEND A A LETTER SAYING THIS IS WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN ABOUT OVER THESE NEXT FIVE LESSONS.

AND THEN EACH WEEK THAT YOU TEACH A LESSON, IF YOU'RE DOING A WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, THERE'S A LINE OR TWO THAT YOU CAN ADD TO YOUR NEWSLETTER AND UNIT ONE GOAL SETTING AND GROWTH MINDSET. THIS WEEK WE LEARNED ABOUT SUCH AND SUCH, AND THAT ALSO COMES IN A VARIETY OF LANGUAGES, WHICH IS AWESOME.

HERE ARE THE FOUR UNITS THAT ARE PRESENT IN EACH, EACH GRADE LEVEL, AND THEY ALL START THE SAME.

THEY ALL GO WITH GROWTH MINDSET AND GOAL SETTING.

THEN EMOTION MANAGEMENT, EMPATHY, KINDNESS, PROBLEM SOLVING.

THERE ARE ONLY FOUR UNITS AND THERE ARE FIVE LESSONS PER UNIT IF WE DO ONE LESSON A WEEK.

[00:40:04]

THAT'S NOT ENOUGH WEEKS FOR THE YEAR, WE KNOW THAT.

BUT WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT WE'RE CREATING A THROUGH LINE K-5, THAT OUR STUDENTS WILL ENGAGE WITH GROWTH MINDSET AND GOAL SETTING IN SEPTEMBER.

EACH OF OUR ELEMENTARY BUILDINGS HAS A CHARACTER TRAIT THAT THEY TEACH EACH MONTH AS WELL, AND I'M PRETTY SURE THAT ALMOST ALL OF THEM START WITH SOMETHING LIKE GROWTH MINDSET AND GOAL SETTING AS WELL. SO THESE WILL DOVETAIL VERY NICELY WITH PRACTICES THAT ARE ALREADY ONGOING IN CLASS OR IN BUILDINGS IN CAMAS.

IT ALSO CREATES A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS TO CONTINUE TO ENGAGE IN THESE SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL LEARNING STANDARDS AND LESSONS.

THE OTHER PIECE IS JUST BECAUSE UNIT ONE IS GROWTH MINDSET AND GOAL SETTING DOESN'T MEAN THIS IS THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME THEY WILL HEAR ABOUT THESE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

IT'S A PRETTY GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

OKAY. SO JUST LIKE LISA TALKED ABOUT BEFORE, SEL IS NOT NEW TO US.

WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO FOCUS ON A WHOLE CHILD FOR A LONG TIME.

SO THIS JUST GAVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT SECOND STEP DOES.

IT JUST GIVES ANOTHER COMPONENT OF THAT SEL PIECE.

RIGHT. SO TEACHERS HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR A LONG TIME FOR THAT.

THEY'VE ALREADY BEEN DOING A LOT OF WORK AROUND THIS.

SO THIS ISN'T NEW STUFF, BUT THIS IS THE COST PROJECTION FOR A THREE YEAR LICENSE FOR SECOND STEP.

SO THREE YEARS ALLOWS US TO REALLY KIND OF DIP INTO IT IN A WAY THAT WE GET TO REALLY UNDERSTAND IT.

AND IT ALSO ALLOWS US TO PIVOT AND SHIFT AS WE MOVE IN THREE YEARS.

RIGHT. SO WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THREE YEARS.

IT THIS THREE YEAR LICENSE ALLOWS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OUR TEACHERS.

IT ALLOWS US TO GO A BIT DEEPER FOR THEM TO TO LEARN ABOUT THESE RESOURCES.

IT ALSO ALLOWS FOR A 60 MINUTE FOLLOW UP TRAINING.

SO YOU'LL SEE, AS EVAN TALKS ABOUT THE WAY THAT WE'RE HOPING TO MERGE THIS IN FOR OUR TEACHERS, THAT WE'RE GOING TO FOCUS SOME SPECIFIC TIME ON SECOND STEP WITH OUR STAFF.

SO THIS IS THE COST FOR THREE YEARS, SO A THREE YEAR LICENSE.

ALL RIGHT. DRAFT FALL ROLL OUT.

SO DRAFT IN ALL CAPS.

THIS IS A DRAFT THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THIS SUMMER AS WE GET READY FOR AUGUST AND OUR OCTOBER DATE COMING UP AS WELL.

BUT WE HAVE CURRENTLY IN PRACTICE IS USING CASELS 3 SIGNATURE PRACTICES OF A WARM, INCLUSIVE WELCOME, GETTING STUDENTS READY TO BE LEARNERS IN OUR ENVIRONMENT, ENGAGING STRATEGIES THAT ENGAGE STUDENTS IN WAYS TO LEARN MEANINGFULLY IN OUR CLASSROOMS. AND THEN AN OPTIMISTIC CLOSURE TO RECAP AND SEND OFF OUR STUDENTS BEFORE THEY GO TO THEIR NEXT LESSONS THAT WILL CONTINUE.

WE'VE DONE SOME GREAT WORK MAKING THAT A FOUNDATION FOR ALL OF OUR LEARNING IN OUR CLASSROOMS, ALONG WITH OUR MORNING MEETINGS AND OUR MORNING CIRCLES.

THOSE COMPONENTS WILL REMAIN BECAUSE THEY ARE STRONG AND THEY'RE IMPORTANT.

BUT THIS YEAR, WITH THIS FALL ROLL OUT PROCESS FOR A SECOND STEP IS WE'RE GOING TO FOCUS ON THREE DIFFERENT PHASES.

WE HAVE EXPLORATION, PRACTICE AND MASTERY, AND THERE'S AN EXPECTATION THAT EVERYONE ENTERS IN AT LEAST WITH EXPLORATION, EVERYONE GETS AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE SECOND STEP IN THEIR CLASSROOM AS A TEACHER AND AS A STUDENT.

BUT HEY, IF YOU WANT TO GO INTO PRACTICE MODE OR EVEN MASTERY MODE, YOU'VE GOT IT AND YOU'LL HAVE SUPPORT ALONG THE WAY.

WE'RE GOING TO INTRODUCE SECOND STEP IN OUR BACK TO SCHOOL TRAININGS IN AUGUST.

SO WE'RE GOING TO GET TO WORK ON THAT RIGHT AWAY.

AND THEN IN OCTOBER, OCTOBER 14TH, THE STATE IS SET UP ALREADY.

IT'S THE STATE IN-SERVICE DAY.

IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE ROLL THIS OUT PROPERLY WITH THE SUPPORT THAT OUR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS NEED.

SO WE'VE SET THAT TIME AROUND, SET THAT TIME OVER ALREADY TO FOCUS ON OUR SEL AND SECOND STEP IMPLEMENTATION.

THE RECOMMENDATION RIGHT NOW IS TO BUILD TOWARD A LESSON A WEEK FROM THIS ADOPTED CORE CURRICULUM.

BUT AGAIN, THERE ARE ONLY 20 LESSONS.

SO WE KNOW THAT THERE IS HARMONY WHICH IS A FREE RESOURCE AVAILABLE FOR ALL K-5 AND THEN SLUMBERKINS I BELIEVE IS K2 PRE K 2, YES.

SO THOSE WILL REMAIN IN SUPPORTING OF OUR FALL ROLL OUT.

AND THAT'S IT. THIS IS YOU.

OH, THIS IS ME. THANK YOU.

THAT'S IT. DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? I DO. JUST A QUICK QUESTION.

HOW WILL WE MEASURE THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROGRAM? THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION, CONNIE.

THANK YOU. HOW WILL WE MEASURE THE SUCCESS? I MEAN, THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN I I THINK THAT ONE OF THE MEASURES OF SUCCESS IS THAT TEACHERS WILL ACTUALLY BE USING IT.

THAT WOULD BE ONE OF THE HOPES THAT IT'S SOMETHING THEY'VE BEEN ASKING FOR.

ONE OF THE COOL THINGS ABOUT SECOND STEP IS WHEN YOU'VE COMPLETED THE LESSON, YOU CLICK COMPLETED.

SO IT KEEPS TRACK OF EVERYTHING THAT TEACHERS DO, SO THEY SEE WHERE THEY'VE BEEN.

I THINK THE OTHER THING, IT'S THOSE LOOSELY BASED THINGS THAT ARE HARDER TO GAUGE, LIKE THE COMMUNITY THAT A CLASSROOM CREATES.

RIGHT. YOU KNOW, DO WE HAVE ANY IDEA?

[00:45:05]

YES. WE DO.

THERE ARE ALSO ASSESSMENTS THAT COME AS PART OF THIS CURRICULUM AS WELL.

SO THERE'S GOING TO BE THE CHANCE TO SEE HOW STUDENTS DEVELOP OVER TIME.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE KNOW IS WITH A SCOPE AND SEQUENCE LIKE THIS, THE VALUE IS THAT STUDENTS ARE LEARNING THE SAME LANGUAGE AND USING THE SAME STRATEGIES.

AND SO WE STILL HAVE PANORAMA, RIGHT? AND SO THAT GIVES US MORE OF THE POST MEASURE OF IMPLEMENTATION AFTER TIME.

SO WE'VE ALREADY GOT SOME MEASURES IN PLACE AND OUR GOAL IS TO ALWAYS KNOW.

SO DR.

WILLIAMS, AND DOUG, AND MARILYN ARE AT THE AWSP CONFERENCE RIGHT NOW, AND DR.

WILLIAMS SENT ME A TEXT TODAY OUT OF ONE OF THE SESSIONS, AND THE QUESTION WAS, HOW DO WE KNOW MORE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING MORE? AND SO THAT REALLY PROVIDES THAT FOCUS FOR US OF HOW DO WE USE THE MEASURES WE ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE TO UNDERSTAND THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION WITH REGARD TO THIS CURRICULUM? AND ALSO, WHAT ADDITIONAL MEASURES MIGHT WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO MONITOR THE EFFECTIVENESS LEVEL? WELL. ALL RIGHT.

WELL, THANK YOU FOR THAT PRESENTATION AND THANKS FOR DOING ALL THE LEGWORK TO GET THIS IN FRONT OF US.

WE DO HAVE A MOTION OR I'M LOOKING FOR A MOTION FROM THE BOARD TO ADOPT THE SECOND STEP SEL PROGRAM FOR GRADES K -5. SO WITH THAT, I'D ENTERTAIN A MOTION.

YES. I'D LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE IT'S A THREE YEAR LICENSE PURCHASE.

THAT'S ACTUALLY THAT'S A SEPARATE ACTION ITEM.

SO WE NEED TO APPROVE THE CURRICULUM FIRST AND THEN THE PURCHASE.

SO RIGHT NOW I'M LOOKING FOR A MOTION JUST TO APPROVE THE CURRICULUM.

I'LL MOVE TO ADOPT THE SECOND STEP SEL FOR K-5 EDUCATION.

I'LL SECOND. ALL RIGHT. SO IT WAS MOVED BY DOUG AND SECONDED BY ERIKA.

ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

ALL RIGHT. ALL RIGHT.

MOTION CARRIES. SO WE'VE APPROVED THAT.

YES. NOW, SO THE NEXT.

YEAH, THE NEXT THING WE NEED TO DO.

YES. NOW WE NEED TO BUY IT.

SO NOW WE'RE LOOKING FOR A THREE YEAR LICENSE FOR A SECOND STEP FOR GRADES K-8.

AND I HAD A QUESTION BEFORE ABOUT WHY IT'S A K-8 AS OPPOSED TO K-5.

IT'S JUST THE WAY THAT THE LICENSE IS.

IT'S JUST HOW WE'RE PURCHASING IT.

BUT WE'VE ONLY APPROVED IT FOR USE FOR K-5 AT THIS POINT, RIGHT? IS THAT CORRECT? DID I GET THAT CORRECT.

OKAY. ALL RIGHT. SO WITH THAT, I'D ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE THE THREE YEAR LICENSE.

I WOULD MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE THREE YEAR LICENSE FOR THE SECOND STEP FOR A TOTAL OF 38,994,74.

I SECOND. ALL RIGHT.

MOVED BY CONNIE AND SECONDED BY ERIKA.

ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. AND MOTION CARRIES THERE.

ALL RIGHT. NEXT ON OUR AGENDA IS ITEM 8C, THIS IS THE REVISED 2022 2023 CALENDAR.

REALLY, THE ONLY CHANGE ON THIS WAS TO CHANGE THE CAMAS CONNECT ACADEMY GRADUATION DATE FROM THURSDAY, JUNE 8TH TO WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7TH.

AND THAT'S JUST TO KIND OF LINE UP, KIND OF MAKE ALL OF OUR GRADUATION CEREMONIES A LITTLE MORE MANAGEABLE.

SO ALL I'M LOOKING FOR IS A MOTION AN A SECOND TO APPROVE THE AMENDED CALENDAR OR REVISED CALENDAR.

I JUST WANT TO MAKE A COMMENT.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I CAN REMEMBER THAT WE WERE GOING TO BE STARTING SCHOOL BEFORE EVERGREEN SCHOOL DISTRICT.

AND I'LL MAKE A MOTION THAT WE ADOPT THE REVISED 2022 2023 DISTRICT CALENDAR WITH THE UPDATED GRADUATION DATE FOR YEAH. I DIDN'T.

I VOTED TO NOT APPROVE THE LAST CALENDAR.

AND SO I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I WON'T APPROVE TO DO THIS ONE AS WELL.

AND THE REASON WHY IS I BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD BE MOVING TOWARDS TALKING ABOUT A MORE BALANCED CALENDAR.

AND SO I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THE REASON WHY.

THANK YOU.

I WOULD SECOND THE MOTION.

SO IT WAS MOVED BY CONNIE, SECONDED BY DOUG ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

AYE. OPPOSED.

SO 3 TO 1, THAT MOTION CARRIES.

ALL RIGHT. DR.

[9. REPORTS]

ANZALONE AND HIS INAUGURAL SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT.

YOU'LL HAVE TO UNMUTE THERE.

OKAY. WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I WANTED TO START OFF FIRST OF ALL, I RECEIVED A LETTER THIS MORNING FROM WASBO, WHICH IS THE WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL BUSINESS OFFICIALS, AND JUST PUBLICLY

[00:50:06]

CONGRATULATE RACHEL KELLY SMITH.

SHE'S IN OUR BUSINESS SERVICES AREA, AND SHE ACTUALLY PUT IN A LOT OF HARD WORK.

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THIS, BUT SHE RECEIVED THE PRESTIGIOUS DESIGNATION OF CERTIFIED SCHOOL BUSINESS SPECIALIST IN ACCOUNTING OR CSBS FOR THOSE EXPERTS OUT THERE.

THIS WAS AWARDED ON JUNE 9TH, AND I JUST WANTED TO PUBLICLY CONGRATULATE RACHEL FOR THAT ACCOMPLISHMENT.

I WENT AND SAW HER THIS MORNING.

SO GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT THERE.

WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT I REALLY WANTED TO JUST DO A QUICK INTRODUCTION.

OF COURSE, FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO MEET YET AND AND JUST A REFRESHER FOR OTHERS.

FIRST OFF, I DO WANT TO THANK THE BOARD, THE STAFF, THE COMMUNITY, OF COURSE, THE STUDENTS FOR NOT ONLY BEING A PART OF THE INTERVIEW PROCESS, WHICH SEEMED MANY YEARS AGO NOW, BUT IT WASN'T BACK IN DECEMBER.

AND THANK THE BOARD, OF COURSE, FOR THEIR THIS OPPORTUNITY.

YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN COMING UP HERE EITHER SOLO OR WITH MY FAMILY SINCE THAT TIME.

AND NOW THAT MY FAMILY IS HERE AND SETTLED, IT'S JUST REFRESHING TO BE AROUND AN ORGANIZATION THAT IS SO FOCUSED AND PASSIONATE ABOUT EDUCATION.

SO THANK YOU FOR THAT.

AND WE'RE ENJOYING EVERY SINGLE DAY HERE HERE IN CAMAS.

THE COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION IS UNPRECEDENTED FROM WHERE I'VE BEEN IN OTHER PLACES.

AND JUST A REMINDER, YOU KNOW, I'M STILL A DAD AND A HUSBAND FIRST.

AND SO WITH HAVING CHILDREN IN THIS DISTRICT, I THINK FOR ME, THIS IS GOING TO MAKE THE WORK EVEN MORE PERSONAL.

AND EVERY DECISION THAT I MAKE OR MY TEAM AND I WORK TOGETHER ON, I WANT TO KEEP THAT IN MIND.

AND THIS IS KIDS FIRST AND WITH MY OWN CHILDREN BEING A PART OF THAT.

SO COMING FROM A LARGE ITALIAN FAMILY, I FEEL A VERY, VERY STRONG SENSE OF FAMILY HERE IN THIS COMMUNITY.

AND I REALLY ENJOYED THAT.

FROM THE GIFTS OF COOKIES IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS RIGHT OUT OF A TV SHOW TO TO JUST THE THE FOOTBALL TEAM COMING TOGETHER TO HELP US LOAD BOXES OUT OF THE TRUCK.

AND I TOLD A COUPLE OF MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, IT SEEMED LIKE EVERY BOX THE POOR KIDS HAD TO BRING UPSTAIRS, THEY'RE LIKE, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING GOING DOWNSTAIRS? [LAUGHTER] AND WE DID.

SO AGAIN, JUST THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY FOR THAT.

JUST SOMETHING FOR FOR THE COMMUNITY TO KEEP IN MIND.

I THINK THE OLD ADAGE WILL COME INTO PLAY WHERE, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE TWO EYES AND TWO EARS AND ONE MOUTH FOR A REASON.

AND SO I PLAN TO DO A LOT OF LISTENING AND LEARNING ABOUT THIS COMMUNITY, THE HISTORY, BUT JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, EVERYTHING THAT THIS DISTRICT IS ABOUT.

AND SO I WILL LEAD.

BUT I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT I'M LEADING BEFORE MAKING ANY MAJOR DECISIONS COLLABORATIVELY.

THIS TEAM AND I'M LOOKING TO MY LEFT AND MY RIGHT AND IN THE BACK THERE IS ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.

AND THANK YOU TO THE SUPERINTENDENTS BEFORE ME FOR PUTTING SUCH AN AMAZING TEAM TOGETHER.

I'M VERY, VERY BLESSED, AND I THINK THAT'S JUST GOING TO CONTINUE TO GROW AS WE DO MORE HIRING THROUGHOUT.

SO I WANTED TO JUST TAKE YOU THROUGH A BRIEF TIMELINE.

I THINK AS COREY AND I MEET ON THE 5TH COMING UP AND THEN LATER IN THE MONTH WHEN WE HAVE OUR BOARD PLANNING SESSION, THIS WILL COME MORE TO MORE FRUITION. BUT JUST A SNIPPET HERE.

PHASE ONE WILL BE REALLY HAS STARTED ALREADY.

I THINK APRIL IS A BIT OF A MISNOMER.

I THINK I REALLY STARTED DAY ONE AFTER RECEIVING THE CALL.

AND SO BUILDING THAT BASELINE OF UNDERSTANDING, LIKE I SAID, OF THIS COMMUNITY, WHAT'S HAPPENING IN AND OUTSIDE OF OUR SCHOOLS IS IMPORTANT.

AND AS WE ROUND OUT THE MONTH OF JUNE, GOING INTO JULY, I THINK CONTINUING THOSE STAKEHOLDER INTRODUCTIONS TODAY WAS VERY IMPORTANT.

AS DOUG MENTIONED, BEING AT THE CITY SCHOOLS MEETING WAS IMPORTANT, BUT ALSO HAVING OUR FIRST OR MY FIRST CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO HEAR WHAT'S ON THE MINDS OF OUR FAMILIES.

AND I WANT TO CONTINUE TO DO SO.

AND THEY WERE VERY OPEN.

VERY OPEN. IT DIDN'T TAKE MUCH TIME FOR THE HONEYMOON TO BE OVER.

AND I WELCOME THAT.

I WELCOME THAT. AND THEN PHASE TWO OR I'M SORRY, PHASE THREE.

AGAIN, THAT LISTENING AND LEARNING PHASE THIS FALL.

I'M VERY EXCITED TO OPEN SCHOOLS AND FACE TO FACE, OF COURSE, AND TAKING THE FALL SEMESTER TO REALLY MEET OUR STUDENTS, BEING IN THOSE CLASSROOMS, MEETING OUR TEACHERS AND OUR STAFF TO REALLY, REALLY FIND OUT WHAT'S HAPPENING AND WHAT'S GOING WELL AND WHAT WE CAN WORK TO IMPROVE ON TOGETHER.

[00:55:07]

AND THEN, OF COURSE, THAT WILL TAKE US TO AFTER THAT, OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, WHICH I KNOW IS ALREADY IN THE WORKS, BUT WORKING TOGETHER WITH OUR TEAM AND OUR BOARD TO REALLY SOLIDIFY OUR PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.

AND THAT WOULD BE AT THE LATEST, I WOULD SAY, A YEAR FROM NOW.

BUT I THINK WE COULD REALLY START TO SOLIDIFY SOMETHING EVEN SOONER THAN THAT AS WE MOVE FORWARD.

THE ENTRY PLAN COMMITMENTS WILL CONTINUE TO ENGAGE AS MANY STAKEHOLDERS AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

AND AGAIN, THIS HAS BEGUN.

I'VE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO MEET EITHER IN A GROUP SETTING OR ONE ON ONE WITH MANY COMMUNITY MEMBERS, FORMER MAYORS, CURRENT MAYORS.

IT'S AGAIN, IT'S SO PROACTIVE OF HOW PEOPLE COME TOGETHER TO MAKE SURE WE'RE DOING WHAT'S RIGHT FOR KIDS IN THIS COMMUNITY.

THIS WILL CONTINUE IN THE DAYS, THE WEEKS AND THE MONTHS AHEAD.

STRUCTURING PURPOSEFUL INTERACTIONS IN WHICH I WILL LISTEN REFLECTIVELY AND OPENLY.

I HOPE THAT I'VE DONE THAT ALREADY.

AND ATTENDING COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL EVENTS WILL BE CRUCIAL, SUCH AS THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CEREMONY, WHICH WAS VERY, VERY MEMORABLE, ESPECIALLY COMING FROM LAS VEGAS.

AND THE OTHER DAY I WAS VERY LUCKY TO ATTEND THE ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAME.

I WAS AMAZED BY HOW STILL IN SHAPE SO MANY OF THE ALUMNI WERE.

EVEN THOUGH THEY LOST, THE GIRLS LOST THE GAME, IT WAS INCREDIBLE TO SEE A GAME OF THAT MAGNITUDE COME TOGETHER.

THE SAND VOLLEYBALL, RIBBON CUTTING, WHICH WAS OUTSTANDING, THE TWO SENIORS, OUTGOING GRADUATES THAT PUT THAT TOGETHER AND THE PROCESS THAT THOSE YOUNG LADIES WENT THROUGH TO GET THAT DONE AND WORKING WITH THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND THE PARTNERS AND REALLY A HECK OF A SENIOR PROJECT THAT CAME TO FRUITION IN THAT WAY I WAS ABLE TO BE THERE. AND THEN MOST RECENTLY, THE BOOK MOBUS.

BACK IN MY DAY IT WAS CALLED THE BOOKMOBILE.

SO THAT BROUGHT BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES FROM MY CHILDHOOD AND BEING A PART OF SOMETHING THAT BRINGS ACCESS TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.

WHERE I THINK I SAID THE BOOKS WENT TO THEM INSTEAD OF THEM HAVING TO GO TO THE BOOKS.

SO INCREDIBLE IDEA AND GREAT TO BE A PART OF THAT.

AND OF COURSE, USING THAT INFORMATION AND FINDINGS OF THE ENTRY PLAN PHASES TO COLLABORATIVELY SHAPE THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF OUR DISTRICT.

SO PHASE ONE THE PRE ENTRY AS I'VE ALREADY BEGUN VISITING EACH SCHOOL IS IMPORTANT.

NOW HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GO TO ALL BECAUSE I CAME AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

AND THOUGH I SAY THAT THAT WOULD HAPPEN BEFORE THE END OF THE 2022 LET ME GO BACK ONE YEAR.

GIVE ME THIS CONTROL, GUYS.

WERE AT. SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I'M CLEAR THAT, YES, VISITING THE SCHOOLS BY THE END OF THE YEAR.

BUT I THINK THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN MULTIPLE TIMES.

I THINK, YOU KNOW, MY GOAL WOULD BE WEEKLY IF NOT DAILY TO BE AT LEAST AT ONE SCHOOL.

I THINK THAT'S WHERE THE WORK IS AND IT'S GOING TO BE IMPORTANT TO BE THERE.

SCHEDULING TIME WITH EACH MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ONE ON ONE I THINK WILL BE IMPORTANT MEETING WITH THE INCOMING CITY MANAGER, THE MAYOR, POLICE CHIEF, FIRE CHIEF, WHICH WE DID TODAY AND CONTINUING THAT COLLABORATIVE.

I THOUGHT THAT WAS AN OUTSTANDING MEETING TODAY, REALLY OPENING UP SOME IMPORTANT LINES OF DISCUSSION, ESPECIALLY AROUND SCHOOL SAFETY.

AND THEN ATTEND ANY PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED CONFERENCES, MEETINGS RETREAT WITH THE BOARD THIS SPRING THIS SUMMER COMING UP.

ESTABLISHING AN INITIAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT'S CULTURE, STRENGTHS AND CHALLENGES.

AGAIN, I THINK PEOPLE HAVE BEEN VERY OPEN ALREADY IN ESTABLISHING THAT.

I THINK WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO OPEN UP THOSE LINES OF COMMUNICATION, HOLDING MEETINGS WITH WITH DOUG, OUR INTERIM OR OUTGOING INTERIM AND SHADOW THIS SPRING, IT'S BEEN VERY ENLIGHTENING TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH AN INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT SO CLOSELY, AND I'M NOT SURE SO MANY INCOMING SUPERINTENDENTS HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY.

SO THAT WAS INCREDIBLE.

AND ALSO HAVING AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH OUR TEACHERS UNION OUTGOING PRESIDENT WHO'S HERE TONIGHT AND OUR INCOMING PRESIDENT.

VERY FRUITFUL CONVERSATION THAT I INTEND TO KEEP THAT RELATIONSHIP VERY STRONG.

OUR CABINET, WHO I'M WORKING WITH EVERY SINGLE DAY, AND STAFF TO GET UP TO SPEED ON PENDING ONGOING AND UPCOMING INITIATIVES AND PROJECTS.

AND THEN, OF COURSE, ATTENDING THE ESD 112, BUT ALSO THE REGION SUPERINTENDENTS COLLABORATIVE, WHICH I'VE ALREADY BEEN ON TO, AND WHAT A FANTASTIC GROUP OF

[01:00:07]

PROFESSIONALS WORKING TOGETHER IN THIS COMMUNITY, ALL REALLY WITH A SIMILAR VISION OF PUTTING KIDS FIRST.

THAT'S BEEN EXTREMELY ENLIGHTENING.

THIS WAS A PICTURE FROM THE RIBBON CUTTING AT THE SAND VOLLEYBALL COURT.

THESE TWO YOUNG LADIES, EMMA AND CHLOE, HAVE SUCH BRIGHT FUTURES.

WE TALKED ABOUT WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO COLLEGE, BUT I WANT TO GIVE SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO COACH LISA SNYDER.

LISA, WHAT A PASSIONATE, ENTHUSIASTIC COACH AND EDUCATOR.

I'LL TELL YOU, SHE WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS AND WHAT THESE YOUNG LADIES DID WITH THE COMMUNITY.

IT WAS AN OUTSTANDING EVENT.

THIS WAS OVER AT RIGHT OUTSIDE OF THE BOOK MOBUS, WAS ABLE TO TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH SOME FAMILIES AND CHILDREN.

I SAID EARLIER THAT I FELT BAD FOR THE OLDER YOUNG MAN IN THE FRONT THERE HE ACTUALLY WAS PRETENDING TO BE REALLY, REALLY INTERESTED IN THE CHILDREN'S BOOKS.

HE DID A REALLY GOOD JOB BEING A GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR THE YOUNGER STUDENTS.

AND SPECIAL THANKS TO JENNIFER SCOTT, JEN THIS WAS A PASSION PROJECT HAS BEEN, I THINK FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW.

AND SO SHE WAS VERY, VERY SWEET TO HAVE ME OUT THERE.

AND THAT WAS A GREAT DAY.

THIS WAS AT THE SUMMER PROGRAMING WITH THAT MARY HAS PUT TOGETHER AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES THERE IS DON'T BREAK THE ICE.

AND THEY BEAT ME PRETTY BADLY THERE.

SO AND THEN LASTLY, I JUST WANT TO JUST REMIND THOSE OF YOU THAT DON'T KNOW, WE HAVE A REALLY IMPORTANT HIRE COMING UP AND OUR CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SEARCH WILL BE, I THINK, A VERY IMPORTANT HIRE AS PRINCIPAL MORRIS HAS DECIDED TO MOVE BACK INTO AN ASSOCIATE ROLE.

I THINK THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US, AS YOU SAID, BRINGING ON STEPHEN AS AN ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, BRINGING ON A FRESH SET OF EYES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL, AS AN INCOMING SUPERINTENDENT.

THAT COULD BE A REALLY GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL OF US.

SO FOR THE PUBLIC TO KNOW WE'VE ALREADY OPENED UP THAT POSITION THAT WILL CLOSE ON JULY 5TH.

WE WILL THEN START THE INTERVIEW PROCESS ON THE 12TH AND HOPE TO HAVE A NAME TO THE BOARD AS EARLY AS THE 13TH OF JULY. SO WITH THAT SAID, I'M NOT SURE IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS, BUT I APPRECIATE THE TIME.

FELLOW AGENCIES AND THE PORT FOLKS.

I MEAN, IT'S WONDERFUL TO SEE THAT INTEGRATION BEGINNING THAT HELPS DEFINE OUR COMMUNITY.

AND I APPRECIATE IT SO MUCH.

AND I THINK THAT'S PART OF THE THE INITIAL INTEREST WAS THAT WILLINGNESS AND THAT INNATE ABILITY TO MAKE THOSE BRIDGES AND BUILD THEM STRONG, BUILD THEM LONG.

THAT'S WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR. SO.

THANK YOU, JOHN. I'M GLAD YOU GOT TIME WITH THE BOOK MOBUS, TOO.

THAT'S LIKE, OUR FAVORITE THING.

SO WE'LL HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ALL GET A SPOT TO READ SOMETIME THIS WEEK.

THAT WAS GREAT. ALL RIGHT.

NEXT REPORT WE HAVE IS OUR MONTHLY BUDGET REPORT FROM JASON MCEATHRON.

ALL RIGHT. GOOD EVENING.

THIS WILL BE PRETTY QUICK THIS EVENING.

BUDGET STATUS REPORT.

OKAY. THERE WE GO.

WE'RE GIVING YOU THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MONTH OF MAY THIS YEAR.

AND KIND OF AN UPDATE ON THE YEAR END PROJECTION AS USUAL.

AND OBVIOUSLY, JUST A QUICK CLOSING.

REALLY MAY WAS PRETTY STANDARD.

NOTHING REALLY UNUSUAL I GUESS TO REPORT.

OUR REVENUES WERE DOWN SLIGHTLY.

OUR STATE APPORTIONMENT COMES IN, IN CERTAIN PERCENTAGES EACH MONTH AND MAY HAPPENS TO BE 5%, WHICH IS A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE.

IN THE COMING MONTHS THAT WILL BE MORE.

ON THE OTHER FUNDS, CAPITAL PROJECTS, DEBT SERVICE, TRANSPORTATION, PRETTY NORMAL ACTIVITY ALONG THOSE LINES.

WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE YEAR END PROJECTION AND THIS IS KIND OF AS OF TODAY WHERE THINGS LOOK, IT'S A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

IT'S IMPROVED BY ABOUT $300,000, I THINK NET DIFFERENCE OVER THE PREVIOUS MONTH.

[01:05:01]

AND IT'S JUST AS WE'RE REFINING A FEW THINGS ON THE REVENUE SIDE AND ON THE EXPENDITURE SIDE.

SO AS THE YEAR PROGRESSES, WE GET A LITTLE BIT MORE TIGHT ON BOTH OF THOSE.

SO BUT NO MAJOR MOVEMENTS WHEN YOU'RE REALLY LOOKING AT YOU KNOW, OVERALL 109, 110 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET. SO. AND I HAD THE USUAL GRAPHS AS WELL, SHOWING THE MONTHLY ACTIVITY FOR REVENUES, EXPENDITURES AND PROJECTION.

BUT I DO.

SINCE SHELLY GAVE ME A SHOUT OUT.

I'LL GIVE HER A SHOUT OUT.

I HAVE APPRECIATED HER TIME AS PRESIDENT OF CEA.

WE'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK TOGETHER FOR MANY HOURS IN NEGOTIATIONS AND SHE'S ALWAYS BEEN PROFESSIONAL.

I APPRECIATE YOU. WITH THAT.

THAT'S ALL I HAVE. SHORT AND SWEET.

THAT'S HOW WE LIKE IT.

THANKS, JASON. ALL RIGHT.

[10. POLICY REVIEW - 1st Reading]

MOVING RIGHT ALONG TO OUR ITEM NUMBER 10.

FIRST, READING OF POLICY REVIEW.

SO CONNIE AND I, AS THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE WENT OVER THESE POLICIES HERE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO NOW AND PRESENT THEM TO YOU HERE FOR FIRST READING.

SO WE CAN APPROVE THEM ALL AS ONE SLATE FOR FIRST READING.

BUT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, WE'D BE HAPPY TO ENTERTAIN THOSE.

2418 WAIVER OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION CREDITS.

WAS THIS THE LAST YEAR, DO YOU ALL KNOW THAT THE LEGISLATURE IS PROVIDING THE ALTERNATIVE WAIVERS? DIFFERENT. SORRY, THIS IS DIFFERENT.

THERE'S SORT OF THE COVID WAIVERS, WHICH ARE A YEAR TO YEAR THING.

SO THEY APPROVED IT LAST YEAR.

THEY APPROVED IT THIS YEAR AND WE'LL SEE IF THEY'LL APPROVE IT NEXT YEAR BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE KIDS COMING THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL THAT WERE IMPACTED BY THAT.

BUT THIS IS JUST THE REGULAR PROCESS THAT WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO WAIVE.

IT'S NOT THAT. IT'S NOT THE SPECIAL WAIVER.

YEAH. RIGHT.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THOSE.

I DID READ THEM THROUGH AND I'M COMFORTABLE WITH THOSE AS OUR FIRST READING AND RECOMMENDING THE SLATE OF A THROUGH WELL ITEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH ITEM J, I WOULD MOVE FOR APPROVAL FOR FIRST READING OF POLICIES.

[INAUDIBLE] YOU WANT ME TO READ THEM? SURE.

YOU DO THE NUMBERS. YEAH. AND YOU WANT THE NUMBERS? I COULD SAY POLICIES LISTED UNDER ITEM TEN OF OUR AGENDA.

OH, THAT'S FINE. A THROUGH I.

THAT'S FINE. YEAH. THOSE POLICIES, PLEASE.

OKAY. I'LL SECOND THAT.

OKAY. SO MOVED BY DOUG AND SECONDED BY ERIKA FOR APPROVAL OF FIRST READING OF THESE POLICIES.

ALL IN FAVOR. AYE.

ANY OPPOSED? ALL RIGHT.

SO FIRST READING IS COMPLETE THERE.

[11. POLICY REVIEW - 2nd Reading & Adoption]

ITEM NUMBER 11, SECOND READING AND ADOPTION.

SO WE HAVE POLICIES A THROUGH N HERE THAT WE HAD AT A PREVIOUS BOARD MEETING.

SO THIS IS JUST SECOND READING OF THESE.

IF THERE WERE NO FURTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS, THEY HAVEN'T CHANGED SINCE THE LAST ONE.

SO IF THERE'S NO FURTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS, WE CAN JUST GET A MOTION TO APPROVE THESE SECOND READING AND FINAL ADOPTION.

NO DISCUSSION? GO AHEAD. SO QUICKLY, THE DISCUSSION.

I KNOW THAT WE HAD A VISIT AT OUR LAST WORKSHOP TO TALK ABOUT THE SENIOR PROJECT, THE CULMINATING PROJECT, WHICH IS STILL LISTED IN HERE AS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT.

SO I DIDN'T KNOW IF THERE WAS ANY DISCUSSION ABOUT THAT OR WHETHER WE WANT TO KEEP THAT IN OR TAKE THAT OUT OR NOT NOT ADDRESS THAT TODAY BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T REALLY DISCUSSED IT.

IF YOU'D LIKE TO DISCUSS, WE CAN ABSOLUTELY DISCUSS IT.

OTHERWISE, BECAUSE IF WE JUST APPROVE IT, YES. OUR INTERESTS IN THAT NO, IT JUST SAYS THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.

NUMBER FOUR IS THE CULMINATING PROJECT.

AND I KNOW THAT WE HAD A DISCUSSION A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SENIOR PROJECT VERSUS CULMINATING PROJECT AND HOW THE DEFINITION MAYBE COULD BE A LITTLE BROADER.

[01:10:05]

SO IT SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS SOME WORK THAT WE COULD DO IN THE DISTRICT EITHER BY KEEPING IT IN THE POLICY OR BY EMBEDDING IT IN THE CURRICULUM. AND I JUST WANT TO BRING IT UP FOR DISCUSSION.

I THINK WHAT WE HEARD FROM OUR WORKSHOP IS THAT IT IS INTERPRETED BROADER, WIDER, DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGY AT HAYES FREEDOM THAN IT IS AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

AND SO BUT YET IT'S STILL GRADUATION REQUIREMENT AND AS AND THAT TERMINOLOGY RIGHT A CULMINATION PROJECT CHANGES SOME BOUNDARIES AROUND IT THAT MAKE A HAND BOOK A LITTLE BIT THICKER FOR SOME SCHOOLS.

I WOULD SUPPORT THE INCLUSION, THE CONTINUED INCLUSION OF A CULMINATING PROJECT.

I APPRECIATED THE KIND OF THE DEPTH THAT WE WERE ABLE TO PICK UP FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP.

I WOULD SUPPORT HAVING SUPERINTENDENT ANZALONE KIND OF HELP GUIDE US THROUGH FURTHER CONVERSATIONS THAT EVOLVE THAT SO THAT WE HAVE SOME BETTER UNDERSTANDING THAT ACHIEVE SOME OF THESE THINGS.

I MEAN THE IDEA THAT WE DON'T FAIL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES, WE DON'T NOT LET THEM WALK BECAUSE OF THIS PROJECT.

IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE I KNOW THE STATISTICS WERE INCREDIBLY SMALL WHERE THEY EVEN HAD TO DOUBLE UP OR TRIPLE UP IN ORDER TO GET PASSAGE.

AND FOR THAT REASON, IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S A GOOD APPLICATION.

THESE ARE YOUNG ADULTS.

I MEAN, AT 18, YOU'RE GOING YOU'RE LIVING THE LIFE OF AN ADULT AT THAT POINT.

SO BEING ABLE TO DO A PROJECT OF THIS NATURE AND HAVING SOME PLACE OF FLEXIBILITY IN HOW YOU YOU REACH THAT, I THINK THAT'S A REASONABLE EXPECTATION AND IT DOESN'T. WHAT I HEARD FROM THAT PRESENTATION WAS WE DON'T STOP PEOPLE FROM WALKING.

AND I DO LIKE THAT THAT IDEA THAT THERE WAS SOME REALLY DIFFERENT AND VARIED WAYS TO APPLY THIS, THAT I LIKE, THAT OPEN IT UP FOR A LONGER YEARS, LET THEM DO SOME KIND OF MORE PASSION PROJECTS.

RIGHT. I THOUGHT THAT THERE WERE SOME INTERESTING POSSIBILITIES.

I'D LIKE TO LEARN MORE.

AND WITH THE BOARD'S AGREEMENT, I MEAN, DOWN THE ROAD, I'D LOVE TO SEE THAT AS A WORKSHOP TOPIC AND A LITTLE BIT ANOTHER DIVE INTO THE STAFF'S RECOMMENDATION IF THERE IS SUCH A THING WHERE THERE'S SOME COHESIVENESS.

AND RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD.

WELL, AND I THINK THERE WAS SOME CLARIFICATION AT THE WORKSHOP TOO REGARDING POLICY VERSUS PROCEDURE, AND THAT THE POLICY THE BOARD POLICY JUST SAYS THAT YOU NEED TO DO A CULMINATING PROJECT TO GRADUATE.

THE PROCEDURE CAN BE ADAPTED BY STAFF, CAN BE HOWEVER IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

SO REALLY THE BOARD DECISION IS REALLY DO WE WANT TO KEEP CULMINATING PROJECT OR NOT? I WOULD I WOULD LEAN THE SAME WAY WITH DOUG IN SAYING LET'S GO AHEAD AND KEEP IT AS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT KNOWING THAT SCHOOLS CAN ADAPT IT.

AND JUST LIKE ANY GOOD TEACHING CAN ADAPT IT TO THEIR STUDENTS, CAN ADAPT IT TO THEIR CLIMATE, TO MAKE IT A WORTHWHILE PROJECT.

SO I WOULD SUPPORT KEEPING IT IN THERE.

I WOULD REALLY JUST WANT TO EMPHASIZE THE CULMINATING PART OF THE PROJECT RATHER THAN SENIOR PROJECT THAT IT'S A CULMINATING PROJECT AND ENCOURAGE OUR SCHOOLS TO BROADEN THAT VIEW AND OPPORTUNITY.

I KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS IN THE SUMMERTIME AND MAYBE TO DO THINGS OVER TIME THAT I THINK WOULD BE REALLY BENEFICIAL AND JUST TO OPEN IT UP A LITTLE BIT MORE.

SO IT'S NOT JUST A SENIOR PROJECT, IT'S A CULMINATING PROJECT.

I AGREE WITH THAT. AND AS A RECENT MOTHER OF A RECENT GRADUATES IN 2021 AND 2019, I AGREE WITH THAT AND WOULD APPRECIATE THE CONVERSATION TO CONTINUE GOING, BUT WE'LL MOVE FORWARD.

YEAH. THANK YOU.

OKAY. SO IT SOUNDS LIKE.

OH, GO OR DID YOU HAVE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO ADD? YES. THANKS, COREY. JUST BRIEFLY, I JUST WANTED TO ADD THAT THE SENIOR PROJECT, THE CULMINATING PROJECT, IS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE THINGS THAT ATTRACTED ME TO CAMAS. YOU KNOW, I THINK AROUND THE COUNTRY, MANY DISTRICTS HAVE DROPPED EXPECTATIONS, WHETHER IT'S TO RAISE GRADUATION RATES OR FOR OTHER SOME OTHER REASON. AND FOR CAMAS TO MAINTAIN THAT EXPECTATION, I THINK RAISES US ABOVE THE BAR.

SO I AGREE WITH THE BOARD AND I APPRECIATE YOUR SENTIMENTS.

I THINK WE CAN CONTINUE TO GROW IT.

I THINK WE CAN CONTINUE TO ADAPT IT.

BUT IT WAS A PLEASURE JUST BEING IN THE ROOM DURING THE WORKSHOP AND LISTENING TO THE TEACHERS AND THE PRINCIPAL FROM CAMAS SPEAK SO HIGHLY ABOUT IT.

[01:15:08]

BUT I ALSO THINK THAT THEY HEARD YOU LOUD AND CLEAR TO SAY, HEY, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO CONTINUE TO EVOLVE WITH THE TIMES, WITH US BEING IN SUCH A TECHNOLOGICAL ERA, TO PROVIDE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES TO ACTUALLY SPEAK WITH THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND OUR PARTNERS FOR THESE KIDS TO GO OUT INTO THE REAL WORLD.

I'M SURE YOUR CHILD WOULD AGREE.

THAT'S AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY THAT OUR DISTRICT IS PROVIDING.

SO THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT.

SO WITH THAT, IF WE ARE ALL OKAY WITH KEEPING THAT POLICY 2410 AS IT WAS PRESENTED IN FIRST READING, I'D ENTERTAIN A MOTION FOR OUR SECOND READING AND FINAL ADOPTION OF ITEMS A THROUGH N.

I'LL MAKE A MOTION TO ADOPT TO PASS THE SECOND READING AND ADOPT THE POLICIES UNDER 11 A THROUGH 11 O.

N. N.

O IS JUST OUR YES, N. AND I WOULD SECOND THAT MOTION.

SO IT WAS MOVED BY ERIKA AND SECONDED BY DOUG.

ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME ABOUT THE DISCUSSION WE NEEDED TO HAVE ON THAT.

I APPRECIATE THAT, CONNIE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR. AYE.

ANY OPPOSED. ALL RIGHT.

MOTION CARRIES THERE.

[13. EXECUTIVE SESSION - RCW 42.30.110 (c & f) Approximately 60 minutes]

OK. THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF OUR REGULAR MEETING.

WE ARE GOING TO RECESS INTO EXECUTIVE SESSION FOR PERSONNEL.

THAT WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY 60 MINUTES.

SO I WILL BE BACK AT LET'S JUST GO AHEAD AND SAY SEVEN, 7:45 TO RECESS.

WE WILL NOT BE TAKING ANY FINAL ACTION.

SO WE ARE IN RECESS.
