Renewal - Amplify mClass with Dyslexia Screening - The teaching & learning department is requesting renewal of the mClass assessment system contract for all elementary schools. The renewal is for two years (7/01/2022 through 6/30/2024) and extends the one-year contract approved by the School Board in June of 2021. This assessment system was selected after extensive research and review by the district’s dyslexia core team, and is considered sole source. mClass is one of the assessments on the recommended literacy screening tools approved by the Washington State Dyslexia Advisory Council, and assures compliance with the 2021-22 requirement to implement a K-2 assessment that helps us to identify students with indicators like those associated with dyslexia. The additional assessments for grades 3-5 will continue the district’s practice of monitoring accuracy, fluency and comprehension for our elementary students. The contract is inclusive of the assessment and reporting system and tools for intervention and instruction. Both screening and progress monitoring assessments are included. The final cost for this two year contract is $79,119. With tax, the total amount is $85,765. The funding source is C&I.

Request for board review for the adoption of Second Step as a core material for Social and Emotional Learning in grades K-5. On June 2, 2022, the Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) recommended approval of the SEL program titled Second Step Elementary for grades K-5. IMC recommendation followed a year-long curriculum review process and included components of student, parent, teacher, counselor, and principal input and feedback. This adoption will fulfill one of the requirements of Senate Bill 5395, passed into law in 2020, and continue the district’s focus on supporting each student’s social and emotional wellness. This curriculum includes four units of weekly, age-appropriate lessons for each grade level. The units align with Washington State’s Social Emotional Learning Standards, and focus on growth mindset & goal setting, emotion management, empathy & kindness, and problem-solving. Each lesson is approximately 15-30 minutes and includes support for teachers to guide student conversations.
