[00:00:03] >> EACH ONE OF US HAD A STRENGTH AND IT'S NOT THAT STRENGTH ALONE. THESE STRENGTHS ARE COMING TOGETHER AND READING, [1. School Board Workshop - 4:30 PM] AND STARTING WITH THE WORD RECOGNITION, SO THAT PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS, THE AUDITORY WILL SHOW THE SOUNDS MANIPULATING THEM [NOISE] TO THEN BEING ABLE TO MATCH THAT TO THE DOCUMENT, THE LETTER THAT MAKES THAT SOUND TO THEN LEARNING WORDS BY SIGHT RECOGNITION NOT JUST [INAUDIBLE] HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS, BUT ALL THOSE WORDS THAT BECOME RECOGNIZABLE. AND THEN LINKING WITH THAT LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION AND ALL OF THOSE STRENGTHS. SO WE TALK ABOUT EVEN IN OUR EARLIEST GRADES WE'RE DOING WORD RECOGNITION AND ALL THOSE STRENGTHS, BUT WE'RE ALSO SUPPORTING LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION AT A DIFFERENT LEVEL THAN WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE IN IMMEDIATE GRADES WHEN THE GOAL COMING BACK TO IT THAT THEY LEARN TO READ NOW READING TO LEARN. SO READING ALL OF THOSE. SO THIS IS AN IMPORTANT READING WROTE AN IMAGE AND THEN TO UNDERSTAND ON THEIR OWN WHAT THAT MEANS. SO THE ACTIONS TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL, YOU CAN SEE EACH BOX GETS A LITTLE BIGGER BUT DATA. SO STARTING WITH OUR AMPLIFY MCLASS SCREENING AND DOING THAT THREE TIMES A YEAR OF THE BENCHMARK WINDOWS. AND THEN IN-BETWEEN THAT IS THE PROJECTS MONITORING AND THE DATA THAT WE ANALYZE FROM THAT. SO REALLY PUTTING IN PLACE SOME PROTOCOLS THAT HELP US MAKE DATA-DRIVEN INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS TO SUPPORT NOT ONLY STUDENTS THAT ARE AT RISK BUT THOSE STUDENTS THAT ARE AT AND ABOVE PLAIN LEVEL. SO BEING ABLE TO SEE ALL OF OUR KIDS AND WHERE THEY FALL. AND THEN CONNECTING THAT WITH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING. >> SO THAT CAME OUT OF THAT CONVERSATION? >> YEAH. [OVERLAPPING] >> ONE OF THE POSITIVES THAT CAME OUT OF THAT CONVERSATION WAS THE FACT THAT SHERMAN AND HIS TEAM [BACKGROUND] HAD ALREADY DONE AND PUT IN PLACE SO MANY OF THESE RECOMMENDATIONS. BUT THERE'S A LOT MORE TO COME, RIGHT SHERMAN? AND SO I KNOW I'M EXCITED TO HEAR THIS PRESENTATION. AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT SHERMAN AND I AND THE REST OF OUR CABINET TALKED A LOT ABOUT OVER THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS, IS IF INDEED WE WERE TO HAVE A TRAUMATIC EVENT, AND KNOCK ON WOOD, THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN, WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE ENVIRONMENT WAS AS CALM AS CALM CAN BE, AND IN OTHERWISE VERY CHAOTIC TIME FOR FAMILIES. AND WE'LL HEAR FROM SHERMAN TONIGHT AS FAR AS SOME OF THE THINGS THAT HE AND HIS TEAM ARE PUTTING IN PLACE TO TRY TO EASE THE SITUATION AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, IF IN FACT WE EVER CAME ACROSS SOMETHING. AND SO AGAIN, WITH THAT SAID, I'LL PASS IT OFF TO SHERMAN, AND THEN I'LL INTRODUCE DEREK IN A LITTLE BIT. SO WITH THAT SAID, MR. DAVIS. >> [BACKGROUND] >> WE'LL DO A LITTLE OF FACILITIES UPDATE. OUR DEPARTMENT HAS SEVEN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS THAT WE RUN. WE HAVE TRANSPORTATION, GROUNDS, THE WAREHOUSE, SHOP, CUSTODIAL, AND OPERATIONS. WHAT MAKES OURS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FACILITY DEPARTMENTS IN THE STATE IS WE ALSO HAVE TECHNOLOGY. SO THAT ADDS THAT LITTLE TECH PIECE TO THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS. SO WE'RE ABLE TO DO ROBOT VACUUMS, CONTROL LIGHTING, HEATING, THOSE KIND OF THINGS WITH TECHNOLOGY. I'M JUST GOING TO [LAUGHTER]. SOME OF THE SYSTEMS THAT WE HAVE LOOKED AT, OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, WE'VE BEEN TAKING SYSTEMS THAT WE'VE HAD THAT WERE MORE ANALOG AND WE'VE BEEN UPDATING THOSE SYSTEMS. SO SOME OF THE SYSTEMS ARE LIKE THE PAGING. WE USED TO HAVE BASICALLY JUST A BELL SYSTEM IN THE DISTRICT. WE REPLACED IT WITH A CLOCK SYSTEM THAT HAS A READER BOARD. AND THEN IT HOOKS OUT TO DO ALERTS WHEN WE HAVE ISSUES IN A BUILDING, WE CAN PUSH, GO TO THE NEXT CLASS. OR IF THERE'S A LOCKDOWN OR ALERT, THEY CAN GO OVER THE BELL SYSTEM. [00:05:03] WE PUT IN VESTIBULES IN ALL OF THE SCHOOLS WITH INTERCOM SYSTEMS WHERE PEOPLE CAN BUZZ TO GET ACCESS INTO THE BUILDINGS. THEY HELP JUST GET BACK CONTROL RIGHT BEFORE THEY GET INTO THE SCHOOL. AND THEN WHEN THEY COME THROUGH THERE, THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE OFFICE TO GO INTO BUILDINGS. WE HAVE DOOR ACCESS. WE REPLACED SONITROL. WE PUT IN DOOR CARD READERS THAT WORK WITH OUR BADGING SYSTEM TO LET STAFF IN AND OUT OF THE BUILDINGS, AND ALSO AUTOMATICALLY SCHEDULE THE DOORS FOR THE TIMES THAT WE WANT THE DOORS TO BE OPENED AND CLOSED. BY PUTTING THESE IN, THESE SYSTEMS START TO COMMUNICATE TO EACH OTHER. TO LOCK DOWN A BUILDING, IT USED TO TAKE ABOUT FIVE THINGS. YOU HAD TO CALL THE POLICE, YOU HAD TO SEND SOMETHING OVER THE BELLS, YOU HAD TO DO MANY THINGS TO LOCK A BUILDING DOWN TO LOCK THE FRONT DOORS. NOW, WE HAVE ONE BUTTON LOCK DOWN THAT YOU CAN PUSH A BUTTON IN THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING AND IT LOCKS DOWN THE WHOLE BUILDING, IT CALLS 911, ALERTS THE PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING THAT WE'RE HAVING A LOCKDOWN. AND THEN IT HAS A BLUE LIGHT. SO THE BLUE LIGHT IS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING, THAT ALERTS PEOPLE THAT WE'RE IN LOCKDOWN AND IT KEEPS PEOPLE FROM COMING INTO THE BUILDING THAT MIGHT HAVE KEYS. SO SAY A CUSTODIAN OR OPERATIONS PERSON DIDN'T KNOW WE WERE IN LOCKDOWN, THEY MIGHT USE THEIR KEY. SO IT JUST LETS PEOPLE KNOW THAT THE BUILDING'S IN LOCKDOWN. PLEASE DON'T COME TO THE DOOR AND KNOCK ON THE DOOR DURING THE LOCKDOWN. >> TO THE LOCKDOWN BUTTON, IS IT THE PRINCIPAL OR US? WHO HAS ACCESS TO THAT? >> SO USUALLY, THERE'S BUTTONS UNDER THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK, AND THEN THE SECRETARY HAS THEM ALSO. EITHER ONE CAN DO THOSE. >> [BACKGROUND] >> THEN WE'VE REPLACED AND UPDATED OUR CAMERA SYSTEM. WE HAVE RIGHT AROUND 300 CAMERAS IN THE DISTRICT FROM PARKING LOTS ALL THE WAY IN THE BUILDINGS AND PUT IN LED LIGHTING TO MAKE IT SAFER IN THE PARKING LOTS. >> QUESTION. WHEN WE GO INTO LOCKDOWN AND THE BUTTON IS PUSHED AND 911 IS CALLED, DO THE POLICE THEN HAVE ACCESS TO THOSE CAMERAS? >> WE HAVE GIVEN THEM ACCESS TO THE CAMERAS AND THEIR BADGE WORKS WHEN THE DOOR IS LOCKED, SO WHEN THOSE THINGS HAPPEN, THE DOOR IS LOCKED, BUT THEIR BADGES STILL WORK SO THEY'RE ABLE TO GET INTO THE BUILDINGS DURING THE LOCKDOWN. OVER THE PAST PROBABLY SIX YEARS THAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THOSE SYSTEMS, WE'VE SPENT RIGHT AROUND FOUR MILLION DOLLARS OF LEVY MONEY TO HELP WITH THOSE PIECES. WE'VE ALSO ADDED CROSSING GUARD LIGHTS, UPS, SO A BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEMS. THE BELLS AND DIFFERENT THINGS WORK DURING A POWER OUTAGE AND THEN A NEW PHONE SYSTEM IN THE DISTRICT. >> QUICK QUESTION WHEN YOU SAY WE SPENT FOUR MILLION, IS THAT OVER A YEAR, THREE YEARS, ABOUT HOW LONG? >> IT'S ABOUT SIX YEARS. >> SIX YEARS. OKAY. >> YES. >> [INAUDIBLE]. >> THOSE BUILDINGS HAVE THE SAME SYSTEM, SO WE'VE JUST MADE IT CONSISTENT ACROSS THE BOARD IN ALL OF OUR BUILDINGS. BY HOOKING ALL THESE SYSTEMS TOGETHER, IT JUST MAKES ALL THESE SYSTEMS BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE TOGETHER. ONCE YOU DO THAT, IT JUST OPENS UP A WORLD OF CHANGES WHERE EACH SYSTEM HAS THE ABILITY TO TALK AND SET OFF THE ALARMS WITHOUT HAVING TO DO SEPARATE PIECES. I THINK I ALREADY SAID THAT. TRANSPORTATION, THOUGHT I'D GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON OUR TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT. WE'RE ABOUT ONE STOP SHORT OF A BUS DRIVER RIGHT NOW. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD TO GET BUS DRIVERS, [00:10:01] WE'RE ABOUT ONE-PERSON SHORT. BUT WE'RE USING PEOPLE FROM THE OFFICE TO DRIVE THOSE BUSES AND WE'RE ALSO TRAINING ABOUT 10 MORE PEOPLE. SO WITHIN A MONTH WE SHOULD BE BACK TO NORMAL AND HAVE PLENTY OF PEOPLE TO HELP WITH BUSSING BECAUSE FOR AWHILE THERE IT GOT REALLY HARD TO GET BUS DRIVERS IN THE DISTRICT. THEY'VE UPDATED THEIR ROUTING. THIS SUMMER, THEY'VE BEEN USING TABLETS, SO I'M ONE OF THE TECH PIECES. WE'VE ADDED TABLETS TO THE BUSES. THIS HELPS SUB BUS DRIVERS DO GPS LOCATIONS THAT CHOSE WHERE TO STOP, WHAT STUDENTS ARE GETTING ON AND OFF THE BUS, AND WE'RE LOOKING TO DO A PILOT WITH STUDENTS BADGING VERY SOON. THE STUDENT BADGING, WE'LL LET THE KIDS BADGE WHEN THEY COME ON AND OFF THE BUS AND WHEN THEY DO THAT, YOU COULD HAVE ALERTS GO OUT TO A PARENT SAYING THAT MY STUDENT CAUGHT ON OR OFF THE BUS. IT JUST MAKES IT SO IT'S EASIER TO TRACK FOR PARENTS WONDERING DID JOHNNY GET OFF THE BUS AT THE RIGHT SPOT OR WHEN THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTS UP, A PERSON GETS ON THE WRONG BUS, IT WOULD TELL THEM THEY'RE ON THE WRONG BUS OR THEY'RE GETTING OFF AT THE WRONG SPOT BECAUSE SAY MAYBE HE WAS GOING TO GO PLAY WITH HIS FRIEND. ON THE WRONG PLACE, IT GIVES THAT BUS DRIVER THE ABILITY TO KNOW WHERE THAT STUDENTS SHOULD GET ON AND OFF THE BUS. >> YOU MAKE A GOOD POINT, CHAIRMAN. IF SOMEBODY GOES ON A DIFFERENT BUS FOR A PLAY DATE AFTER SCHOOL, WILL IT ALERT THEM AS A VISITOR TO BUS 12 OR? >> THEY'LL NEED A PAPER RUN FOR THAT. WE'VE HAD IT BEFORE WHERE SOMEONE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT BUS THEY SHOULD BE ON, SO THEY GET ON THE WRONG BUS AND THEN THE KID RIDES THE WHOLE BUS ALL THE WAY AROUND AND THEN THE PARENTS LOOKING FOR THAT STUDENT BECAUSE THEY'VE GOTTEN ON THE WRONG BUS. THEN EVERYONE'S FREAKING OUT, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THAT STUDENT IS. THAT HELPS WITH THOSE THINGS. >> WILL WE THEN JUST BE ONE STEP AWAY FROM KIDS BEING ABLE TO USE THEIR BADGE TO TAKE ROLL WHEN THEY ENTER A CLASSROOM AND LEAVE CLASS. >> WE PILOTED TENANT SYSTEMS THAT HAVE THAT ABILITY. ALSO FOR TAKING LUNCH, BUYING LUNCH, YOU COULD DO THAT ALSO FOR BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY, AND THEN IT COULD WORK FOR AB OR ASB EVENTS YOU COULD USE THAT ALSO, SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS. THE WASHINGTON STATE PATROL INSPECTED ALL OF OUR BUSES AND WE GOT 100 PERCENT, SO IT'S CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MECHANICS. THEY DO A WONDERFUL JOB. TRANSPORTATION, WE'VE SPENT ABOUT $430,000 BETWEEN TABLETS, THE BUSES HAVE CAMERAS ON THE NEW BUSES AND IT HELPS IF THERE'S AN EVENT THAT GOES ON THE BUS, YOU CAN SEE WHAT WENT ON DURING THAT TIME. THE BUS AREA, WE PUT SECURITY CAMERAS OUT WITH THE BUS AREA AND THEN GAVE THEM THE DOOR ACCESS LIKE WE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE SO THEY CAN BUZZ PEOPLE IN AND OUT OR USE THEIR BADGES AND IT KEEPS PEOPLE FROM JUST WALKING IN THE BUILDING. >> I'M JUST CURIOUS WITH THE TABLETS ON THE BUSES, IS THAT SOMETHING THAT'S ON A REPLACEMENT SCHEDULE LIKE OUR OTHER DEVICES, HOW OFTEN WILL WE HAVE TO REPLACE SOMETHING LIKE THAT? IS IT JUST RUNNING GPS BASICALLY? >> I WOULD GUESS PROBABLY 5-7 YEARS, RIGHT IN THAT ARENA, I WOULD GUESS. >> I KNOW YOU DO WITH A LOT OF YOUR OTHER DEVICES WHERE THEY'RE ON A SCHEDULE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO REPLACE THEM ALL AT ONCE. >> I THINK I HAVE HEARD ABOUT THOSE BUSES ON CAMERAS. IT'S LIKE LET'S JUST LOOK AT THE FOOTAGE ON THE BUS. >> USUALLY THEY DO IT JUST IF THEY GET A CONCERN PARENTS, SOMETHING HAPPENED AND THEY WANT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED AND THAT WAY YOU CAN SHARE WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT STUDENT OR IF THEY THOUGHT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH KIDS JUMPING AROUND OR THE DRIVING ERRATICALLY FOR A BUS DRIVER. I MEAN IF WE EVER GET A CONCERN, WE CAN PULL THAT UP AND IT'S ABLE TO SHOW US. IT'S TURNED OUT REALLY WELL, IT ACTUALLY CLEARS UP A LOT OF THINGS WHEN YOU WATCH IT. WELL, THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN THE WAY WE THOUGHT IT DID. IT'S USUALLY BEEN REALLY POSITIVE. >> I KNOW YOU CAN GET AN APP FOR YOUR INSURANCE SAKE, RECORDS LIKE IF YOU HAVE A HARD STOP OR YOU'RE EXCEEDING THE SPEED, DO WE KEEP TRACK OF THAT KIND OF STUFF OR? >> I DON'T KNOW ON THAT PIECE. I KNOW THEY'RE ABLE TO SEE WHERE THE BUSES ARE [00:15:02] AND TRACK THOSE AND THEY MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING ON THE BUSES THAT MIGHT DO THOSE. I KNOW IT TRACKS MILEAGE AND TRACKS HOW MANY KIDS RIDE THOSE BUSES FOR STATE REPORTING. >> [BACKGROUND] >> I DON'T THINK WE HAVE ANY ON THE OUTSIDE OF BUSES. I THINK THERE ARE ONLY THE INSIDE RIGHT NOW. WE PROBABLY COULD LOOK AT THOSE FOUR. I KNOW THEY HAVE THEM FOR THE PADDLES. I CAN ASK ON THAT, BUT I THINK THEY'RE ALL INTERNAL RIGHT NOW. >> THERE WOULD BE SOMETHING LIKE THAT IN THE FUTURE? >> THIS WEEK WE SHOULD BE FINISHING THE PRUNE HILL ROOF REPLACEMENT. THAT WAS ABOUT A MILLION DOLLARS, IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL, THEY SHOULD HAVE LEAK-FREE FALL, AND SO THEY'RE REALLY HAPPY. THAT WAS A GREAT THING THAT WE GOT DONE THIS SUMMER. WE ALSO ADDED CHROMEBOOKS, ONE-TO-ONE KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SECOND GRADE. ALL OF OUR GRADES NOW FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SENIOR THROUGH 12TH HAVE DEVICES NOW. EVERY STUDENT HAS A DEVICE IN THE DISTRICT RIGHT NOW. WE'VE ADDED CYBERSECURITY SERVICES TO EMAIL AND WEB PROTECTION. IF YOU CLICK ON A LINK, IT GOES OUT, IT CHECKS THAT LINK, AND MAKE SURE IT'S A SAFE LINK BEFORE IT LETS US GO THERE AND THAT SAVES A LOT OF PEOPLE GETTING INFECTED AND PASSWORDS GETTING STOLEN AND THOSE THINGS. WE DID PAINTING PARKING LOTS, BARK, PRESSURE WASHED, GROUNDS, ALL TO GET THE BUILDINGS CLEANED OUT FOR STUDENTS TO COME BACK.. THE CUSTODIANS DID A WONDERFUL JOB ON CLEANING OUR BUILDINGS. TO BUILD ON THE THINGS WE'VE STARTED, WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT CLASSROOM SMART LOCKS. IF YOU THINK OF A HOTEL, WHERE YOU GO TO A HOTEL AND YOU CAN USE YOUR CARD TO GET INTO THE ROOM, THESE WOULD BE THE SAME TYPE OF THING ON CLASSROOMS. THAT WOULD LET PEOPLE USE THEIR BADGES TO GET IN AND OUT OF CLASSROOMS, SO WE'RE GOING TO PILOT A SYSTEM TO WHERE YOU'D HAVE THE DOORS LOCKED. THE DOORS WOULD BE LOCKED AND THEN THEY WOULD HAVE THE ABILITY TO USE A BADGE TO GET IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM. DURING THE LOCKDOWN, IT'S JUST A LOT MORE SECURE TO DO THAT. WE ALSO CAN HAVE IT SO THE POLICE BADGE CAN GET IN THOSE DOORS, ALSO DURING THE LOCKDOWN. GUN DETECTION SOFTWARE. AS YOU KNOW, THERE HAS BEEN STUDENTS SHOOTINGS IN SCHOOLS. INSTEAD OF HITTING JUST THE ENTRY OF THE SCHOOL, SOME OF THE SOFTWARE IT HAS AI SO IT CAN DETECT GUNS THAT ARE PULLED OUT ON A CAMERA. IF SOMEONE PULLS OUT A GUN IN A HALLWAY OR AN ENTRYWAY OR SOMETHING, IT CAN SEND PICTURES AND LET YOU KNOW THAT THAT'S HAPPENING BEFORE THINGS ARE BAD. IT CAN ALSO WORK ON THE SYSTEMS THAT WE'VE ALREADY PURCHASED, SO IT WORKS ON THE CAMERAS THAT WE'VE ALREADY PURCHASED ACROSS THE DISTRICT, WHICH WOULD ALLOW US TO HAVE THAT ABILITY IN GRADE SCHOOLS AND OUR SMALLEST SCHOOLS JUST BECAUSE YOU COULD JUST USE THE CAMERAS THAT WE ALREADY HAVE. RAPID RESPONDER IS NO LONGER USED IN THE STATES, SO IT'S AN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE. RIGHT NOW I'M LOOKING AT ANOTHER SOFTWARE TO DO THE SAME THING. IT WOULD GIVE THE ABILITY TO LOCK DOWN, LIKE SAY, I'M IN A BUILDING AND I SEE SOMETHING GOING ON, I COULD PUT THE BUILDING IN LOCKDOWN FROM MY LAPTOP OR FROM MY CELL PHONE. IF I SEE SOMETHING GOING ON, IT WOULD MAKE THE CLOCKS GO OFF AND LOCK THE BUILDING, IT WOULD DO EVERYTHING WE CAN DO BY HITTING THAT PANIC BUTTON, BUT A TEACHER COULD PUT THAT BUILDING INTO LOCKDOWN. THE SOFTWARE THEN HAS THE ABILITY TO ALERT PARENTS, SO COULD ALERT PARENTS, LIKE SAY THAT THERE WAS A SHOOTING AND IF WE WERE GOING TO SEND STUDENTS SOMEWHERE WE CAN TELL THEM WHERE THEY'RE GOING, GIVE A QR CODE TO PICK UP THEIR STUDENTS, AND THEN WHEN THEY GO TO PICK UP THEIR STUDENTS, [00:20:04] THEY SIGN FOR THEIR STUDENTS ON THE DEVICE, THE MINUTE THAT THEY SIGNED FOR THE STUDENTS, SAY DAD PICKS UP JOHNNY, MOM WOULD GET A TEXT SAYING THAT DAD PICKED UP THEIR SONS, SO THEY WOULDN'T BE FREAKING OUT OR WHO'S PICKING UP THEIR CHILD. IT HAS THE ABILITY TO TRACK ALL OF WHERE THAT HAPPENS IN REAL-TIME. IF YOU'RE TRYING TO HELP UNIFY OR REUNIFY PARENTS, YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO LOOK UP WHERE THAT STUDENT IS AND GET THEM BACK UP WITH THEIR PARENTS. VERY EASY TO THE SOFTWARE. >> JUST HAD A CURIOSITY ABOUT THE SOFTWARE. IT HAS AUTOMATIC POLICY PUSHOUTS, BUT THEN IS IT MONITORED BY AN ACTUAL PERSON TO PUSH OUT? SAY THAT FIRST PUSH GOES OUT, BECAUSE OF THE POLICY THAT'S BEEN PUT IN PLACE, BUT THEN AFTER AN HOUR, IS IT MANUALLY PUSHED OUT TO GIVE PEOPLE UPDATES? >> IT HAS A DASHBOARD, SO OUR COMMUNICATION PERSON WOULD PUT OUT THAT ALERT AND THEN THEY WOULD WATCH AND THEY COULD SEE HOW MANY KIDS HAD BEEN PICKED UP, AND HOW IT'S ALL GOING, IT'S A COMMAND CENTER WHERE THEY CAN SEE ALL OF THAT STUFF FROM ONE PANE OF GLASS. EVEN IF THEY'RE NOT IN THE ROOM WITH THE STUDENTS OR THE PARENTS, IT'S JUST A WAY TO KNOW IF SOMETHING IS GETTING STOPPED OR SOMETHING'S NOT WORKING CORRECTLY. IT'S REALLY NEAT, WHEN YOU SEE IT WORK IT CAN SEND TO ALL DIFFERENT DEVICES ALSO. LIKE SAY SOMEONE DOESN'T HAVE A SMARTPHONE, IT CAN CALL THEIR PHONE NUMBER, ALMOST ANY WAY YOU COULD GET COMMUNICATED, WE COULD COMMUNICATE WITH IT. >> [BACKGROUND] >> IT'S REALLY NEAT, AND IT WOULD KEEP THINGS REALLY COME IN AN ERRATIC EVENT AND BEING ABLE TO TRACK EVERY STUDENT. IF THEY GO TO THE NURSE SO YOU CAN PUT IN A NOTE THEY WENT TO THE NURSE AND THEN YOU COULD FIND THAT THOSE STUDENTS REALLY EASY IF YOU WERE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING. IT'S JUST REALLY NEAT. IT WOULD REALLY BRING US UP TO A NEAT LEVEL BECAUSE IT ALSO WORKS FOR FIRE DRILLS, WORKS FOR LOCKDOWN IN PLACE. IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, IT CAN GIVE THEM A CHECK-OFF SHEET THAT THEY CHECK SO THEY SAY THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS, THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO LOCK THE DOOR, THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO FIVE THINGS, THEY CAN CHECK THAT THEY'VE DONE THOSE THINGS AND THAT THOSE STUDENTS ARE WITH THEM AND THEN SUBMIT. IT ALSO TAKES FEEDBACK ON ALL OF THOSE EVENTS, SO YOU COULD SAY, "I COULDN'T TURN OFF THE LIGHTS BECAUSE THEY WERE COMPUTER CONTROLLED AND IT WAS TELLING THEM TO DO SOMETHING, SO THEY HAVE ABILITY AT REAL-TIME TO SAY WHAT DIDN'T WORK." >> DO YOU TAKE ATTENDANCE BECAUSE I KNOW WHEN WE DO DRILLS, YOU GO OUTSIDE AND WHO'S MISSING? I'M MISSING TWO KIDS, WHATEVER UNTIL IF THEY ARE IN LOCKDOWN? CAN SAY I HAVE ALL THESE KIDS, BUT NOT THESE, MIGHT BE OUT OR IN ANOTHER CLASSROOM SOMEWHERE, THEY CAN ADD IN OTHER KIDS? >> THEY CAN ALSO DO MULTIPLE CLASSES, SO THEY SAY THEY'RE TAKING A CLASS FOR SOMEONE AT THAT TIME, AND ACTUALLY TAKE THEIR CLASS AND DO THE STUDENTS ALSO. >> THAT'S GREAT. >> IT'S REALLY NEAT [OVERLAPPING]. >> WHAT'S THE TIMING OF THAT? >> WE'LL PROBABLY DO A PILOT NEXT MONTH AND HOPEFULLY HAVE IT IN PLACE IN THE WINTERTIME. >> WHEN YOU SAY PILOT, YOU MEAN ONE SCHOOL? >> WE'LL PILOT ONE SCHOOL AND THEN WE'LL GO DISTRICT-WIDE, BUT IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO TRY IN ONE SPOT. BECAUSE YOU SEE, IF THERE'S A PROBLEM WITHOUT DOING THE WHOLE THING AND THEN GOING, "OH, I WISH I WENT ABOUT THAT." THAT WE'RE PUTTING IN SOFTWARE FOR RANSOM DETECTION AND THEN ALSO MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION. ONE OF THE BIG THINGS THAT THE STATE WOULD LIKE IS WHEN WE SAY THAT THE ADULTS WHEN THEY LOG INTO THEIR LAPTOPS, THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE YOUR PASSWORD, BUT ALSO OUR NEW LAPTOPS WILL HAVE RFID READERS SO THEY CAN SCAN THEIR BADGE, SO THEY WOULD LOG ON, SCAN THEIR BADGE AND IT KEEPS YOU FROM GETTING HACKED FROM OTHER SOURCES. THAT'S WHAT I HAVE RIGHT NOW. WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING AT NEW THINGS AND OTHER ITEMS. >> THANKS, SHERMAN. JUST TO YOUR POINT, ERICA, I THINK THAT'S REALLY BEEN A CHARGE OF SHERMAN AND HIS TEAM. IT'S SO NICE TO SEE THE PROACTIVE USE OF THE LEVY FUNDS THAT WE HAD TO GO THIS DIRECTION. WE'VE LEARNED FROM OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT [00:25:03] HAVE FALLEN TO ERROR ON SOME OF THESE TIMES. WE DON'T WANT TO BE CAUGHT IN THAT SITUATION EVEN WITH THE RANSOMWARE. I JUST READ THAT LA UNIFIED HAD A MAJOR SECURITY BREACH, AND SO THESE ARE THINGS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT SO WE CAN AVOID THOSE THINGS. TRULY, KUDOS TO THE BOARD OF THE COMMUNITY, FOR OUR CHAIRMAN AND YOUR TEAM FOR BEING SO PROACTIVE AND REALLY TRY TO MODERNIZE OUR SYSTEMS. THAT WAY IN CASE THERE IS A TRAUMATIC EVENT WE CAN TRY, LIKE I SAID BEFORE, TO KEEP THINGS AS CALM AS POSSIBLE IN AN OTHERWISE VERY CHAOTIC SITUATION JUST AS A PARENT AND KNOW THAT MY WIFE OR MY SISTER OR WHOEVER HAS PICKED UP MY KIDS, SO I'M NOT STILL SEARCHING TO ME WOULD GIVE OUR PARENTS SUCH A GREAT STATE OF MIND IN AN OTHERWISE VERY TOUGH SITUATION. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRODUCTIVITY. >> [BACKGROUND] DOUG, IF I CAN JUST COMMENT ON YOUR FIRST REMARKS, YOU'RE A 100 PERCENT RIGHT. I THINK WE WILL TAKE THAT GUIDANCE TO OUR CITIZENS ADVISORY AS WELL TO SEE WHAT WE CAN DO TO GET THEIR INPUT AS WELL AS CITY SCHOOLS. BUT TO THAT POINT, OUR PRINCIPALS HAVE ASKED FOR SOME MORE GUIDANCE WHEN IT COMES TO THESE SITUATIONS, AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS WORK WITH CAMPBELL POLICE TO REALLY CREATE SOME SMALL GROUP PLANNING. WE FEEL LIKE IT COULD BE MORE EFFECTIVE TO MEET PER SCHOOL. CAMPBELL POLICE HAS BEEN VERY SUPPORTIVE OF THAT. WE'RE JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT SOME LOGISTICS RIGHT NOW. WHAT THE GOAL WILL BE AS TO DO AT SCHOOL BY SCHOOL, BECAUSE EVERY BUILDING IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT, EVERY STAFF IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT, AND THE SURROUNDINGS ARE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. I THOUGHT THAT WAS A REALLY GREAT IDEA FROM THE PRINCIPALS AND THE ADMIN TEAMS, AND SO WE'RE MOVING FORWARD WITH THAT AS WELL. WE JUST DON'T HAVE DATES LOCKED IN YET, BUT WE'RE WORKING ON IT. COORDINATING A LOT OF OTHER ENTITIES IS TOUGH, BUT WE WANT TO DO IT SOONER THAN LATER, OBVIOUSLY. THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION, DOUG. >> EXCUSE ME. ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? I THINK WE CAN MOVE ON. SHERMAN, THANK YOU FOR THAT PRESENTATION. MOVING ON TO OUR CTE UPDATE WITH DEREK. >> JUST REALLY QUICKLY. I JUST WANT TO AGAIN THANK YOU, SHERMAN. IN TERMS OF CTE, WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF THE DISTRICT. I THINK JUST LIKE I SAID WITH SHERMAN, WE HAVE THE RIGHT PERSON IN THAT POSITION. I LOVE THE FACT THAT SHERMAN HAS A TECHNOLOGY BACKGROUND WHICH TRULY HELPS WHEN WE'RE TRYING TO MODERNIZE OUR SYSTEMS. REGARDING DEREK, EVER SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE, I'VE JUST HEARD JUST WONDERFUL THINGS AND I'VE BEEN ABLE TO SEE IT FOR MYSELF. I THINK WE HAVE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS. DEREK IS VERY HIGHLY REGARDED AROUND NOT JUST SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON, BUT IN ENTIRE STATE. AGAIN, JUST OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HIS PRESENTATION AND UPDATE. >> GREAT STUFF, I APPRECIATE IT. I PASSED AROUND A COPY OF THE ACTUAL CT ANNUAL PLAN AND THAT WAS ALSO IN THE DOCUMENTS SENT BY GAIL OUT WITH THE BOARD INFORMATION. I DID WANT TO POINT OUT THE PICTURE ON THE FRONT IS ACTUALLY PRETTY NEAT BECAUSE IT'S A DRONE PHOTO OF THE FIRST ASSEMBLY AT CAMPBELL HIGH SCHOOL IN ALMOST THREE YEARS. CULTURALLY IN THAT BUILDING, ASSEMBLIES ARE IMPORTANT, AND IN MANY HIGH SCHOOLS, THAT'S TRUE. SO THIS PAST SUMMER, AND I'LL GO THROUGH IT IN THE REPORT, BUT WE HAD TEACHERS TRAINED TO BE [00:30:03] FAA 107 CERTIFIERS SO THEY CAN TRAIN STUDENTS TO BECOME FAA 107. THAT'S WHAT YOU NEED TO GET TO FLY A DRONE COMMERCIALLY. A COUPLE OF OUR TEACHERS AT CHS TOOK THE LIBERTY OF GETTING THE DRONE OUT AND DOING THIS AERIAL VIEW OF THIS ASSEMBLY PRETTY COOL. I'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT LATER. MY PRESENTATION IS MORE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE REPORT. THE REPORT ITSELF, I THINK IS ABOUT ALMOST 10-9 PAGES. I'M GOING TO GO THROUGH A QUICK PRESENTATION ON THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REPORT. I'M GOING TO START WITH A PURPOSE. THERE WE GO. IN OUR POLICY 2170, THE BOARD WILL ANNUALLY REVIEW AND APPROVE THE DISTRICT PLAN FOR THE DESIGN AND DELIVERY OF ITS CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM. THIS IS ALSO PART OF THE FEDERAL PERKINS, THE CARL PERKINS ACT, AND OUR STATE REQUIREMENTS. I'VE ACTUALLY SEPARATED THIS OUT IN THE PAST. I'VE DONE A PRESENTATION, AND THEN ASKED FOR AN APPROVAL THE SAME TIME. IN THIS TIME WITH THE NEW FORMAT OF THE BOARD MEETINGS, I ASKED IF WE COULD DO A PRESENTATION NOW AND THEN PUT IT IN THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR THE NEXT MEETING. I WANT TO GO OVER THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DISTRICT WIDE PLAN. ONE OF THE MAIN TOOLS THAT WE USE IS THE PROGRAM ADVISORY EVALUATION. EACH AREA OF CTE HAS AN ADVISORY, AND IN THAT ADVISORY, THE STAFF AND THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE GO TOGETHER AND LOOK AT FIVE SPECIFIC AREAS: CURRICULUM, ACADEMIC STANDARDS, INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, AND FACILITIES. THE GOAL OF THIS IS TO HAVE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN INDUSTRY, WHO ARE REALLY EXPERTS AT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE WORKFORCE RIGHT NOW, ADVISE OUR PROGRAMS. THAT WAS FRANKLY DIFFICULT IN THE LAST TWO YEARS. WE WERE ABLE TO DO ZOOM ADVISORY, SO IT'S JUST NOT THE SAME. ONE OF THE BIG THINGS I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO IS GETTING BACK TO THE TRADITIONAL IN-PERSON MEETINGS, AND TO SEE OUR FACILITIES. ALSO WITH THE PROGRAM ADVISORY, WE LOOK AT STUDENT LEADERSHIP, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS, DATA AND ASSESSMENT, AND THEN COMMUNITY ADVISORY. WE RATE OURSELVES AND AS THROUGH THIS, WE CREATE A SET OF GOALS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. I MENTIONED THIS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, BUT IT'S A FIVE-YEAR ROLLING GOAL SET. REALLY FIVE YEARS OUT, WE HAVE VERY MINIMAL INFORMATION. WE MIGHT HAVE A LONG-TERM PLAN LIKE WE KNOW WE'RE GOING TO DO A LAB EVERY FIVE YEARS, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. BUT REALLY THE MEAT OF THE PRESENTATION IS ABOUT THIS YEAR, WHAT ARE OUR GOALS FOR '22-'23. THEN ADDITIONALLY, THE GENERAL ADVISORY, SO THERE'S TWO ADVISORY COMMITTEES; THE PROGRAM, WHICH IS EACH AREA, AND THEN A GENERAL LEDGER, WHICH ARE ALL OF THE AREAS COMBINED. I'LL TALK ABOUT THIS IN THE PRESENTATION, BUT WE'VE GONE TO A REGIONAL ADVISORY MODEL, WHICH HAS BEEN GREAT. I PARTNERED WITH VANCOUVER SCHOOL DISTRICT, EVERGREEN SCHOOL DISTRICT, BATTLEGROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND US AND WE LOOK AT OUR ECONOMIC DATA AND BUSINESSES REGIONALLY, RATHER THAN ONLY IN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE CAMPBELL SCHOOL DISTRICT. THAT'S CREATED A LOT OF ADDITIONAL PARTNERSHIPS, INFORMATION, DATA, ALL THAT GOOD STUFF. I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT A FEW HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST YEAR, AND THEN I'LL GET INTO THE CURVE OF SOME GOALS FOR THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR. ONE OF THE BIG HIGHLIGHTS WAS WE WERE ABLE TO ARTICULATE OUR AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE COURSES WITH CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, WHICH IS VERY CHALLENGING TO DO, SO WE'RE OFFERING COLLEGE IN THE HIGH-SCHOOL. STUDENTS WILL GET 15 COLLEGE CREDITS THROUGH CWU IN OUR ASL I AND II PROGRAMS. THE OTHER REALLY NICE BENEFIT OF THAT IS THAT COUNTS AS A GRADUATION PATHWAY. IF STUDENT FINISHES THAT, THEY HAVE NOW MET THAT GRADUATION PATHWAY REQUIREMENT. THAT'S PRETTY POWERFUL, AND WE HAVE TYPICALLY AROUND A 180 STUDENTS A YEAR WHO ARE SIGNED UP FOR SIGN LANGUAGE. ANOTHER THING WE WERE ABLE TO DO IS ARTICULATE OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM WITH CLARK, ANOTHER 15 HOURS AND STUDENTS ALSO EARN THEIR STARS CERTIFICATION, WHICH ALLOWS THEM DIRECT ENTRY INTO A PRE-K EDUCATIONAL SETTING. THEN, AS I MENTIONED, WE TRANSITIONED OUR GENERAL ADVISORS TO THIS REGIONAL MODEL, WHICH WAS, I THINK BRING OUR DISTRICTS SOME STRENGTH. WE HAVE ENGINEERING, COMPUTER SCIENCE, ARE REALLY STRONG IN OUR DISTRICTS, SO THEY SO THEY LOVE THAT WE BRING THAT PIECE TO THE ADVISORY MODEL. WE ALSO ADDED TWO MAJOR INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS. THAT'S THE IRC'S; THE FAA DRONE CERTIFICATION, AND THE ONSHAPE CAD CERTIFICATION. THAT WAS A PIVOT, THE ONSHAPE, [00:35:02] DURING COVID BECAUSE THE CAD SOFTWARE THAT WE TRADITIONALLY USE REQUIRES A REALLY POWERFUL COMPUTER, AND SO STUDENTS DIDN'T HAVE THAT, SO WE FOUND THIS ONLINE CAD SOFTWARE THAT WAS VERY HIGH-QUALITY. WE WERE ABLE TO ADD A CERTIFICATION FOR THAT LAST YEAR. ALSO, THIS WAS A LARGE EXPENDITURE. [LAUGHTER] WE UPGRADED AT CAMPBELL HIGH SCHOOL, THE DIGITAL ARTS LAB. MAC IS INDUSTRY STANDARD. THEY'RE EXTRAORDINARILY EXPENSIVE, BUT IN THE DIGITAL ART WORLD, THAT'S PRIMARILY WHAT INDUSTRY FEEDBACK TOLD US OR USE THE MACHINES. I HAVE A PICTURE ON THE LEFT OF THE NEW LAB, WHICH WE WERE ABLE TO ESSENTIALLY CLEAR OUT A BUNCH OF SPACE AND MAKE IT MORE OPEN. A LOT OF DRAWING HAPPENS. THEY HAVE DIGITAL TABLETS THEY DRAW ON. THEN WE WERE ABLE TO PURCHASE MAC STUDIO, WHICH IS A PRETTY NEW PRODUCT FROM APPLE, CAME OUT LAST YEAR. WE HAVE A GREAT TECH TEAM, AND ADAM TALKED ABOUT THE POWER CONSUMPTION. THESE MACHINES USE A SMALL FRACTION OF THE ELECTRICITY THAT A SIMILARLY EQUIPPED PC WOULD USE. IT'S ONE OF THOSE BENEFITS YOU DON'T ALWAYS THINK ABOUT BUT I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY HOW MANY, BUT I WOULD ESTIMATE IT'S 5-6 OF THESE EQUAL THE POWER CONSUMPTION OF ONE PC. THEN ADDITIONALLY, WE UPGRADED THE MONITORS AND NEW DRAWING TABLETS ARE OLD TABLETS FOR OVER 10 YEARS OLD, AND THOSE ARE WACOM TABLETS. IT'S A VERY SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT WHICH I THANK YOU FOR YOUR APPROVAL OF THIS. I THINK IT WAS IN MAY THAT WE GOT THAT, BUT IT WAS READY TO GO FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR. >> SHERMAN, HOW DO WE KEEP ALL OF THOSE MACS UP TO WITH THE SOFTWARE UPDATES? [OVERLAPPING] WE NOTICED TODAY WAS 12.6. I MEAN, THERE CAN BE SOME BIG HOLES THAT THEY FIND. >> WE HAVE REMOTE SOFTWARE JAM THAT CAN PUSH THOSE UPDATES REMOTELY TO THOSE MACHINES, AND INSTALL LIKE IF YOU CAME, HAD THE NEW SOFTWARE TITLE, WE COULD PUSH THAT REMOTELY. >> THANKS. >> THE CHANGE WAS AMAZING. PRIMARILY, IN THAT LAB WE USE ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD. LIKE PHOTOSHOP, YOU CLICK THE BUTTON AND IT'S LOADED IN UNDER A SECOND. IS LIKE IT SEEMS YOU CLICK IT WHERE BEFORE YOU'D CLICK IT AND YOU CAN GO GET TWO CUPS OF COFFEE. I FEEL THAT FOR OUR STUDENTS LAST YEAR, BUT THEY WERE AT THE END OF THE UPGRADE CYCLE. HOW IT IS SOMETIMES. BUT IT'S AN AMAZING UPGRADE FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND MUCH MORE TIME WE'LL BE ABLE TO SPEND ON INSTRUCTION INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR THE TECHNOLOGY. THEN THE OTHER, THIS IS MORE INFORMATIONAL THAN AN UPDATE, BUT WE HAVE THE GRADUATION PATHWAYS REQUIREMENT THAT CAME IN 2019. I WANTED TO SHARE THAT LAST YEAR WE HAD 280 STUDENTS IN CANVAS WHO COULD HAVE USED THE CTE GRADUATION PATHWAY. IT'S HARD FOR ME TO DETERMINE WHAT THEY ACTUALLY USED BECAUSE WE HAVE MANY STUDENTS WHO WOULD MEET AND THEY WOULD MEET 56 DIFFERENT GRADUATION PATHWAYS. BUT TO KNOW THAT WE HAD 280 STUDENTS WHO WERE CONSIDERED BY THE STATE OF WASHINGTON TO BE HIGHLY QUALIFIED, ESSENTIALLY IN CTE AND USE AS A GRADUATION PATHWAY WAS REALLY PHENOMENAL. THOSE WHO ARE HAWKING THE DATA. THERE'S 268 NUMBERS UP THERE. WELL, IT DOESN'T WHAT'S NOT REFLECTED IN THERE ARE THE PATHWAYS WE DON'T OFFER, BUT CASCADIA TECHNOCRATIC ACADEMY DOES. THERE ARE SEVERAL STUDENTS, 22 TO BE EXACT, WHO MET A PATHWAY AT CTA THROUGH THAT PARTNERSHIP AND AREN'T REFLECTED IN OUR NUMBERS BECAUSE WE DON'T OFFER THE PATHWAY THAT THEY HAVE AT CTA. YOU CAN SEE ALSO, I THINK IT'S PRETTY SPLIT FAIRLY EVENLY ABOUT WHERE OUR STUDENTS GO. THE LARGEST PATHWAY, WE HAVE IN OUR DISTRICT IS THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING PATHWAY. MOST OF THOSE THROUGH OUR CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND THAT STAR CERTIFICATION TALKED ABOUT. THEN THE NEXT HIGHEST IS THE SKILLED AND TECHNICAL, WHICH WOULD BE LIKE CODING, ENGINEERING PATHWAY, THOSE COURSES. IT'S PRETTY WELL SPLIT AND YOU CAN SEE HOW CTE IS A HEALTHY PART OF WHAT OUR DISTRICT OFFERS IN TERMS OF GRADUATION PATHWAYS. >> THINGS LIKE A CONSTRUCTION THAT GOES THROUGH CASCADIA TECH. THAT'S. >> CORRECT. >> WHEN THEY DO THAT. >> OUR PROGRAMS WE DON'T OFFER A FULL TWO-YEAR CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM. WE OFFER A YEAR AND THEN STUDENTS CAN GO TO CTA CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM. I THINK YOU'RE PROBABLY WORRY ABOUT LIKE EVERGREEN, ONE OF THE MODELS. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, EVERGREENS OFFERING CONSTRUCTION PATHWAY IN THE DISTRICT. THEY'RE BUILDING A WHOLE NEW SHOP AREA AT EVERGREEN HIGH SCHOOL. WHILE IT HASN'T HAPPENED FORMALLY YET, WE HAVE HAD THESE INFORMAL CONVERSATIONS ABOUT POTENTIALLY SHARING SOME STUDENTS WHO MIGHT HAVE AN INTEREST IN THAT. THAT'S REALLY SPECIFIC TO HOMEBUILDING. [00:40:03] THERE'S A PRETTY PROMINENT HOME-BUILT OR IN OUR REGION WHO'S HELPING TO FUND THAT AND THAT WILL BE FOR RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION. >> WHAT IS THE DIFFERENT SPEED FROM SELLING THEM THERE VERSUS SELLING THEM TO CASCADIA? >> CASCADIA IS OFTEN FULL. WE'RE JUST ADDING MORE CAPACITY. IT'S A LOT BEHIND THIS, BUT CASCADIA HASN'T HAD A BUILDING UPGRADE AND YEARS AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN SO THEY CAN THEN OFFER MORE SPACES BECAUSE CLARK COUNTY CERTAINLY HAS GROWN IN LAST 20 YEARS, THEN SELL THAT, BUT EVERGREEN HAS THE RESOURCES AND SOME OF THE PARTNERSHIPS TO BE ABLE TO BUILD THEIR OWN, SO TO SPEAK. >> DEREK. >> [BACKGROUND] >> I THINK THAT CONTINUED ALIGNMENT OF OUR PROGRAMS WILL BE REALLY CRITICAL IN MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE OFFERING A SCOPE AND SEQUENCE OF COURSES THAT ALIGNED TO A CAREER FIELD AND MEET THE GRADUATION PATHWAY IS GOING TO BE VERY IMPORTANT. FRANKLY, IN A DISTRICT, OUR SIZE, WHICH AROUND THE STATE IS A MEDIUM, SMALL TYPE DISTRICT. WE HAVE TO BE PRETTY STRATEGIC, I THINK AN OFFERING THE PATHWAYS IN THE DISTRICT THAT WE CAN AFFORD AND CAN KEEP STRONG AND THEN ALSO CONTINUE WITH OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH LIKE CASCADIA TO STUDENTS HAVE AN INTEREST IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION TO JOIN THAT PROGRAM. I THINK AS THE BOREDOM, I THINK IT'S JUST MAKING SURE THAT OUR PROGRAMS ARE CONTINUING TO BE ALIGNED NOT ONLY IN OUR DISTRICT BUT TO THE SUPPORTS IN OUR REGION. WE HAVE A VERY STRONG, I'M SORRY. GO AHEAD. >> [BACKGROUND]. >> THERE WAS A BILL LAST YEAR TO AMEND THE PATHWAYS TO MAKE SOME CHANGES TO IT, AND THAT BILL FAILED IN OUR LEGISLATURE. THUS FAR WE'VE HAD NOW I THINK THIS IS THIS WILL BE OUR THIRD YEAR OF CONSISTENCY WITH WHAT THOSE PATHWAYS ARE. ALSO, I BELIEVE THAT OS PI HAS PROVIDED FAR MORE SUPPORT IN THE LAST TWO YEARS TO ME, CTE DIRECTORS IN ALIGNING OUR PROGRAMS AND MAKING SURE THAT OUR PROGRAMS ARE MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CTE GRADUATION PATHWAY AROUND THE STATE AND THE DATA IS NEW BECAUSE IT ONLY HAPPENED 2019. BUT CTE IS BY FAR THE MOST COMMON WAY THAT STUDENTS GRADUATE. PART OF THAT, I SHOULDN'T SAY GRADUATE BUT MEET THEIR GRADUATION PATHWAY. PART OF THAT OR THE SBA SCORES. THE MOST COMMON WAY, HISTORIC BEFORE 2019, BEFORE THE PATHWAY LAW WAS STUDENTS WOULD PASS THE SBA MATH OR ELA. THOSE RATES, THAT WAS THE ONLY WAY. THOSE RATES ARE REALLY LOW RIGHT NOW. THE STATE AVERAGE LEASE AND I LOOKED THIS MORNING AND MATH WAS 30 PERCENT. THEN YOU'D BE SAYING 70 PERCENT OF YOUR STUDENTS AREN'T GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL IF YOU HAD THE PRE-2019 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. IT'S VERY SIGNIFICANT THAT CTE WAS PART OF THAT PATHWAY AND IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US TO PAY ATTENTION TO AND MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE OFFERING OUR STUDENTS SEIZE OPPORTUNITIES. I THINK MR. MCKINNEY, YOU HAVE A QUESTION. >> I WAS JUST CURIOUS. WHICH OF THESE GRADUATION PATHWAYS WOULD BE LIKE A DISCOVERY, FOR EXAMPLE? >> THE STEM OR SMALLER PROGRAMS TYPICALLY HAVE ONE OR TWO GRADUATION PATHWAYS. AT DISCOVERY, THEY HAVE STEM AND SKILLED AND TECHNICAL AND AT LEAST WE HAVE BUSINESS AND STEM. WE'RE WORKING TO AND I WOULD ALSO JUST ADD THAT THOSE STUDENTS WHO LIKE AT DISCOVERY, WHO ARE INTERESTED IN CONSTRUCTION, THEY CAN GO TO CASCADIA AND FINISH THEIR GRADUATION PATHWAY. IF YOU GO TO CASCADIA, YOU ARE A CTE. YOU DO HAVE THE ABILITY TO GRADUATE USING THE CTE PATHWAY BECAUSE THEY ARE HALF-DAY PROGRAM. STUDENTS HAS THREE CLASSES FOR A WHOLE YEAR. THAT'S THREE CREDITS IN THE SAME PATHWAY THERE. THAT'S THEY'VE MET THE REQUIREMENTS. CASCADIA IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF WHAT WE NEED TO DO FOR, ESPECIALLY FOR OUR REALLY SMALLER PROGRAMS. THE OTHER QUESTIONS AROUND GRADUATION PATHWAYS. THE GOALS, A COUPLE OF THESE ARE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GOALS THAT WERE IN THE REPORT. [00:45:07] BUT ONE IS EXPAND GRADUATION PATHWAY OPPORTUNITIES AT HAYS AND DISCOVERY. THAT WAS A VERY TIMELY QUESTION. IT'LL BE CHALLENGING, FRANKLY, JUST BECAUSE OF THE SCOPE AND SIZE OF THE PROGRAM BUT IT'S SOMETHING THAT IS IN THE GOAL SET AND I THINK WE'LL BE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH BOTH PRINCIPLES ARE VERY WILLING TO WORK WITH ME, FRANKLY, IN ORDER TO ADD PATHWAYS. SECOND ONE IS A BIG ONE, INCREASE EQUIVALENCY COURSE OFFERINGS THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT. WHAT THOSE ARE? THOSE ARE THOSE COURSES THAT STUDENTS CAN TAKE THAT COUNT FOR TWO DIFFERENT CREDIT AREAS. LIKE, FOR EXAMPLE, RIGHT NOW WE HAVE AP COMPUTER SCIENCE, WHICH COUNTS AS A THIRD-YEAR MATH AND THE CTE CREDIT. WE WANT TO ADD TO CONTINUE TO ADD THOSE COURSES TO OUR OFFERINGS THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT. I ACTUALLY MET THIS MORNING WITH PRINCIPALS SMITH AT DISCOVERY, AND WE'RE PLANNING TO ADD AT LEAST FOUR OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS. THEY'RE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO ALLOW STUDENTS FLEXIBILITY TO DO WHAT THEY WANT IN A COURSE REGARDING COURSE TAKING. ADDING THOSE COURSES AND WE HAVE TWO OF THEM THAT ARE ALREADY IN THE WORKS FOR CANVAS HIGH SCHOOL, ROBOTICS AND AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE WERE CONDITIONALLY APPROVED OVER THE SUMMER BY THE STATE. THIS FALL WILL WORK TO ADD A WHOLE BUNCH OF MORE COURSES FOR 23-24. ADDITIONALLY, SOME INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS THAT WILL ADD, WE'RE GOING TO ADD A PYTHON PROGRAMMER, A MICROSOFT TEST ASSOCIATE. IN ORDER TO COMPLETE A PATHWAY, STUDENTS HAVE TO HAVE ACCESS WITHIN THE COURSE TAKING TWO DUAL CREDIT OR AN INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CREDENTIAL. THAT'S WHY THOSE ARE IMPORTANT ITEMS TO ADD TO OUR PROGRAMS. THEN THE THIRD ONE IS CONTINUING TO GROW THE DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES. CLARK, ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO IN 2019, BASICALLY HAD A RESET OF ALL OF THEIR ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS AND HAVE BEEN PRETTY CHALLENGING TO RESTART SO WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH A LOWER COLUMBIA AND STARTING TO ADD SOME COURSES FOR CTE DUAL CREDIT. THEN ALSO IN CANVAS, PROBABLY THE MOST POPULAR TWO WAYS TO EARN DUAL CREDIT OR AP COURSES. THAT'S WHERE YOU SEE THE AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE BEING ADDED TO THE CTE UMBRELLA, AND THEN ALSO COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL. THAT'S WE'VE USED SOME OTHER DUAL CREDIT ROUTES. IT'S UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE CTE DUAL CREDIT IT'S FREE FOR STUDENTS WHERE THE OTHERS ALL COSTS SOMETHING TO OUR STUDENTS. WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH CLARK. THEIR PROGRAM WAS REDUCED AS A RESULT OF A FUNDING REDUCTION. THEY LOST FEDERAL FUNDING AND THE FEDS DIDN'T SUPPORT THE DUAL CREDIT POSITION AT CLARK ANYMORE. THEY DO IT, BUT THEY DO IT AS AN ADD-ON TO SOMEBODY ELSE'S JOB. FRANKLY. >> I THINK THE ADDITION AND SUPPORTING OF THESE KINDS OF THINGS, DUAL CREDIT AND THE EQUIVALENCY COURSE OFFERINGS IN ORDER TO MAYBE GIVE A MORE INCENTIVE FOR KIDS TO STAY HERE AS OPPOSED TO GO INTO RUNNING START. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ARE RUNNING START NUMBERS LOOK LIKE NOW THAT I KNOW IN THE DISTRICT THAT I WORK IN, THEY ARE WAY UP AND THAT'S CONCERNING WHEN WE'RE ALL THINKING ABOUT FUNDING FOLLOWS THE FTE WHEREVER THE KID GOES. >> NO, I APPRECIATE THAT. THEN DURING MY TIME AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF OUR NON GRADUATES WERE RUNNING START STUDENTS BECAUSE THEY WOULD GO THERE AND NOT HAVE THE COUNSELING SERVICE OR THE MENTORSHIP OFTEN FROM A TEACHER WHO IS A HIGH-SCHOOL TRAINED TEACHER. I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT COMMENT BECAUSE I THINK RUNNING START IS GREAT FOR MANY STUDENTS, BUT NOT FOR ALL STUDENTS. PARENTS SHOULD BE PRETTY CAUTIOUS ABOUT KNOWING THEIR OWN CHILD AND THAT CHILD, THEY LOSE THEIR MENTORING AND MONITORING FRANKLY WHEN THEY GO TO RUNNING START. >> I WAS GOING TO SAY TOO AS SOMEBODY WHO IS A BIG BELIEVER IN MAKING SURE THAT KIDS CAN DO FOUR YEARS OF A FINE ART OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL. IN A WAY, THIS IS SUPPORTING OUR ARTS PROGRAMS AS WELL. >> THE FOUR OF THE FIVE DHS CLASSES ARE ARTS. [LAUGHTER] >> IF I CAN JUST CHIME IN ON THAT. AS SUPERINTENDENT GROUP FOR SOUTHWEST, WE'VE ASKED AT CLARK COLLEGE AND WSU TO BE REPRESENTED AT OUR SUPERINTENDENT MEETINGS. THE LAST ONE I WAS AT, WE HAD A REPRESENTATIVE FROM BOTH SCHOOLS AND THAT EXACT CONVERSATION CAME UP. THERE WAS SOME SUPERINTENDENTS THAT ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SOME OF THE REASONING WHY SOME STUDENTS ARE CHOOSING TO LEAVE THEIR COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS TO GO ON TO RUNNING START. TO DEREK'S POINT, IT'S A WONDERFUL OPTION FOR [00:50:01] A LOT OF KIDS AND I'M STILL LEARNING ABOUT THAT. BUT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S SOME DATA PROVIDED TO OUR COUNSELORS, TO OUR PRINCIPALS, AND TO OUR PARENTS AS TO WHEN STUDENTS GO, WHAT IS THE OUTCOME AND WHAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY STUDENTS ARE GOING. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WHEN A STUDENT DOES CHOOSE THAT OPTION IS FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. WE'RE ALSO ASKED THEM TO BE A PART OF OUR MEETINGS BECAUSE WE WANT TO HAVE A GOOD DIALOGUE WITH THEM AS TO WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR IN A CAMAS STUDENT, WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR IN A CAMAS GRADUATE, AND HOW CAN WE PROVIDE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS, BUT IN TURN, ARE WE BEING CLEAR TO THE COLLEGES AS TO WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IN THEIR PROGRAMS SUCH AS THEIR EDUCATION PROGRAMS. WE SPEND A LOT OF RESOURCES AND TIME WORKING WITH OUR TEACHERS ON SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND HOW TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS. IS THAT BEING ARTICULATED TO THE FUTURE TEACHERS AND FUTURE WORKFORCE IN THE COLLEGES, BECAUSE WE'RE NOT WILLING TO GIVE UP THAT. WE WANT TO WORK WITH OUR INCOMING TEACHERS AND OUR VETERAN TEACHERS ON THOSE THINGS. BUT IS THAT BEING SUPPORTED AT THE COLLEGES WHEN THEY'RE EVICTING WHAT TEACHERS ARE GOING TO LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE? I REALLY LOVE THAT PROACTIVE MODEL THAT THEIR TEAM AND THE TEAM HAS DONE AT ESD TO NOT JUST BRING THE SUPERINTENDENT'S TOGETHER FOR THESE CONVERSATIONS BUT ALSO THE HIGHER ED REPRESENTATIVES. THAT'S BEING LOOKED AT. IT JUST TRIGGERED MY MEMORY ON THAT AND I'LL GET BACK TO THE BOARD. >> I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO IT. I LIKE SEEING THAT WE'RE OFFERING COLLEGE CREDIT HERE BECAUSE COLLEGE IS EXPENSIVE AND IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO CLARK AND GET SOME FREE COLLEGE CREDITS IN, THAT'S GREAT. BUT IF WE CAN DO THAT HERE IN OUR DISTRICT AND NOT ONLY THAT BUT GET UNIVERSITY CREDITS, THAT WILL HAVE AN EASIER TIME TRANSFERRING TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY AS OPPOSED TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE CREDIT. >> THAT'S REALLY THE BIGGEST STRUGGLE TO RUNNING START RIGHT NOW IS THE COST OF COLLEGE IS SO EXPENSIVE. >> [OVERLAPPING] EXACTLY. WHO CAN BLAME THEM? >> THE BEST FINANCIAL DEAL AROUND AND A LOT OF KIDS THAT MAY BE ON THE BORDER FOR, I'M NOT SURE YOU'RE REALLY READY FOR COLLEGE-LEVEL WORK YET, LET'S REALLY BEEF UP YOUR CURRENT SKILLS. BUT THE PARENTS ARE LIKE, NO, THIS IS A GREAT DEAL. YOU COULD GET TWO YEARS OF COLLEGE IN AND IT'S HARD TO ARGUE WITH THAT. BUT LIKE YOU SAID, IT'S NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR EVERY STUDENT BUT IT'S A TOUGH FIGHT RIGHT NOW. >> BUT IF WE CAN GET COLLEGE CREDIT IN OUR SCHOOLS, [OVERLAPPING] WE STILL GET THE KIDS THE SUPPORT OF A HIGH-SCHOOL TEACHER, SOMETHING I JUST THINK. I THINK THAT IS WAVE OF THE FUTURE. THAT'S WHERE WE NEED TO BE GOING. >> THAT CAN PAY YOU BACK ON THAT A LITTLE BIT HAVING A RUNNING START STUDENT, THAT WAS A BIG APPEAL, IS LIKE TWO YEARS OF A COLLEGE DEGREE THAT YOU GET AND THEN YOU'LL HAVE TO PAY FOR TWO MORE. BUT HAVING SAID THAT, I DIDN'T KNOW A LOT GOING INTO IT. SHE JUST WAS LIKE I'M IN THE RUNNING START. THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT BUT IT'S HARD. SHE'S HAD SEVERAL STUDENTS ASK HER OR RELATIVES, HOW DID YOU LIKE IT? AS A PARENT, I'M TELLING SOME PEOPLE IT'S RIGHT FOR SOME KIDS BUT IT'S NOT RIGHT FOR ALL KIDS. I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TO PUSH. I TOTALLY AGREE THAT IF WE CAN OFFER THESE KIDS THAT COLLEGE CREDIT IN THE CLASSROOM INSTEAD OF AT CLARK. CLARK'S WONDERFUL THOUGH. IT WORKED OUT PERFECT FOR MY DAUGHTER AND WHAT WE DID. BUT MY SON HAS THAT, MAYBE I SHOULD GO TO AND I'M LIKE, THEY'RE JUST DIFFERENT AND I DON T THINK HE WOULD SUCCEED IN IT LIKE SHE DID. I THINK THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO STRESS WITH FAMILIES THAT IT'S MORE THAN JUST SAVING ON TWO YEARS OF COLLEGE. >> BUT I THINK IF THEY'RE LOOKING AT THAT. THEY'RE LOOKING AT SAVING AS A COMPARISON OF THESE TRANSFERABLE CWU IN THE CLASSROOM, UDEB IN THE CLASSROOM, AP. THAT CAN SHAVE OFF AS WELL. >> BUT ALSO, I THINK THAT WHAT I REALLY GET DRAWN TO ON THESE COLLEGE IN THE CLASSROOM CREDITS IS THAT THERE ARE UNIVERSITY CREDITS WHEREAS OPPOSED TO, THERE ARE SOME UNIVERSITIES IF YOU TRANSFER, UNLESS YOU GET AN AA, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO ACCEPT ALL OF CREDITS. I KNOW THAT JUST FROM EXPERIENCE WITH SOME OF MY OWN STUDENTS KNOWING THEY WERE REALLY SURPRISED AT HOW FEW OF THEIR CREDITS TRANSFERRED ONCE THEY WENT TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY. >> WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS HOW MANY OF THE RUNNING START STUDENTS GET THE AA BECAUSE IF YOU'RE ONLY GOING TO DO IT PART-TIME AND NOT GET THE AA BEFORE YOU GRADUATE, IT'S NOT AS BENEFICIAL AS DO THE WHOLE THING AND GET YOUR AA DEGREE. I THINK MAYBE PARENTS TO UNDERSTAND THAT BECAUSE IT TRANSFERS WAY BETTER IF YOU'VE GOT THE DEGREE. I DON'T REMEMBER HOW MANY THERE WAS AT GRADUATION. THERE WAS QUITE A FEW THAT GOT THEIR AA DEGREE. >> BUT OUT OF HOW MANY RUNNING START STUDENTS? THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKING AT. [OVERLAPPING] >> I KNOW. THAT'S A PART I DON'T KNOW. >> BUT ALSO YOU CAN'T JUDGE THAT AND SAY IF THEY DON'T GET THEIR AA DEGREE BECAUSE SOME OF THEM GO ANOTHER YEAR, MAYBE JUST DID A SENIOR YEAR OR ARE GOING INTO MAYBE TECHNICAL PROGRAM OR WHATEVER. >> SOME MIGHT GO THROUGH THE SUMMER BECAUSE I KNOW YOU [00:55:02] COULD DO PART-TIME RUNNING START AND THEN YOU COULD FINISH YOUR AA DEGREE IN THE SUMMER AND THEN TRANSFER TO UNIVERSITY. >> BECAUSE LAST YEAR RUNNING START ALLOWED YOU TO DO THAT. NORMALLY YOU HAVE TO PAY YOURSELF. >> ONE OTHER PIECE THAT'S COME UP IN JUST SOME DIALOGUE I'VE HAD WITH STUDENTS AND TRACY, AND MAYBE YOU CAN SPEAK TO THIS TOO, BUT IS A LITTLE BIT OF A MISSING CONNECTION PIECE. SOME STUDENTS THAT I'VE SPOKE TO HAVE SAID THAT THEY WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE OF AN ASB TYPE EXPERIENCE OR SOME CONNECTION SO THEY CAN STILL STAY CONNECTED TO THEIR HIGH SCHOOL. SOME DO AND SOME DON'T, BUT I'VE HEARD THAT FROM MULTIPLE STUDENTS. THAT'S ANOTHER GOOD POINT THAT WE BROUGHT UP WITH OUR REPRESENTATIVES FROM CLARK COLLEGE IN THAT CAN WE WORK ON SOME OPPORTUNITIES TO REALLY GIVE THE STUDENTS STILL SOME OF THAT CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE INSTEAD OF JUST THROWING OUT THE BABY WITH THE BATHWATER? WE UNDERSTAND THAT THE CHILD MAKES THAT DECISION WITH THE PARENT, BUT MAYBE TO TRACY'S POINT, THEY DON'T ALWAYS UNDERSTAND THAT THEY'RE REALLY QUICKLY MOVING INTO ADULTHOOD ONCE THEY MAKE THAT COMMITMENT. HOW COULD WE BRIDGE THAT GAP A LITTLE BIT MORE AND THAT'S COMING RIGHT FROM THE KIDS. >> I THINK THAT IS ONE THING THAT WE DID. FOR SENIOR YEAR, SHE TOOK ASB AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL SPECIFICALLY. THAT WORKED OUT FOR US. SHE DROVE AND HAD A CAR AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO THAT ONE CLASS AND DRIVE TO CLARK FOR THE REST. BUT BEING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL ONCE A DAY WAS SO IMPORTANT TO HER BECAUSE SHE KNEW THERE'S ASSEMBLIES YOU CAN GO TO, THERE'S HALL DECORATING, THERE IS FOOTBALL GAMES, BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T WANT TO MISS THAT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE. I THINK ENCOURAGING THOSE STUDENTS DO TO THE FULL-TIME RUNNING START, THAT FIND A WAY TO STILL BE CONNECTED TO YOUR SCHOOL THROUGH SPORTS OR BAND. >> [OVERLAPPING] I WAS GOING TO SAY ABOUT 10 PERCENT OF MY KIDS ARE RUNNING START STUDENTS AND THE ONLY CLASS THEY TAKE THE HIGH SCHOOL UP HERE. >> I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT TO REMIND THEM TO DO THAT. >> BECAUSE YOU CAN TAKE ONE CLASS AND BE A FULL-TIME RUNNING START. >> EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO PAY THAT LITTLE ADDITIONAL FOR THE EXTRA CREDIT AT CLARK. >> THEY CAN TAKE 15 CREDITS IN ONE HIGH SCHOOL. THEY NEED TO MEET WITH THEIR COUNSELOR BEFORE EVERY CLARK TERM. THAT'S WHEN THEY SHOULD BE GOING OVER THEIR GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND MAKING SURE THAT THEY'RE MEETING THEIR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO GET A FORM SIGNED OFF TO TAKE TO CLARK. HOPEFULLY THAT WE UTILIZE THAT OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THOSE CONNECTIONS. >> I WILL SAY CAMAS HAD A REALLY GOOD, I GOT AN EMAIL EVERY WEEK FROM A COUNSELOR AT CAMAS. SHE WAS RUNNING START COORDINATOR. ALL THE RUNNING START STUDENTS, IT JUST SAID WHAT'S HAPPENING AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, WHAT YOU NEED TO BE DOING, MAKE SURE YOU'VE DONE THESE THINGS. EVERY WEEK, IT WAS A RUNNING START NEWSLETTER. >> WE ANSWERED THAT IN 2015 I THINK WHEN WE WERE THERE BECAUSE OF THE FEEDBACK GOT FROM STUDENTS. WE DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. THEN WE ALSO HAVE REQUIREMENTS THAT NOT EVERY DISTRICT HAS. THE SENIOR PROJECT REQUIREMENT IS A GREAT EXAMPLE. >> THERE'S A LOT INVOLVED. >> THAT'S ANOTHER THING WE DID IN 2014 AS WE ADDED THE RSVP CLASS, WHICH IS THE RUNNING START SENIOR PROJECT CLASS. IT'S A HYBRID CLASS WHEN STUDENTS MEET ONCE A MONTH. BUT THEN THERE'S A GOOGLE CLASSROOM WHERE THE COMMUNICATION HAPPENS. THAT'S BEEN A GREAT WAY TO KEEP KIDS ENGAGED AND MAKE SURE, DID YOU PASS ALL YOUR CLARK CLASSES? BUT WE'VE TRIED THINGS TO HELP SUPPORT THOSE STUDENTS BECAUSE IT IS A GREAT OPTION FOR MANY KIDS, IT'S NOT FOR EVERY KID. I THINK THE COUNSELING PART OF THAT IS SUPER IMPORTANT FOR THE STUDENTS WHO FIT THE PROGRAM. THE OTHER THING I WOULD ALSO ADD AND THE PART OF THE REASON THAT I THINK WE'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT OFFERING COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL AND AP, ALL THE OTHER OPTIONS, IS THERE'S A REAL EQUITY ISSUE AS WELL. STUDENTS WHO CAN DRIVE AND THAT ADDS A LOT MORE FLEXIBILITY. THEY COULD TAKE THE BUS FROM CAMAS TO CLARK, BUT THAT'S PROBABLY AN HOUR, 45 MINUTES EACH WAY AND IT'S VERY CHALLENGING. I THINK FROM AN EQUITY STANDPOINT, WE TRY TO OFFER AS MANY DUAL CREDIT OPTIONS AS POSSIBLE AND THEN FAMILIES AND STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE WHAT THEY WANT BASED ON THEIR SITUATION. >> ONE MODEL THAT WE COULD LOOK AT AND I'M DEFINITELY NOT LOOKING TO ADD AN FTE HERE, I PROMISE. BUT ONE MODEL WE COULD LOOK AT OR AT LEAST EXPLORE IS HAVING A CAMAS STAFF MEMBER, WHETHER IT'S A GUIDANCE COUNSELOR, AN ADVISOR, ACTUALLY ONSITE AT CLARK COLLEGE. I KNOW IN MY PREVIOUS DISTRICT, WE HAD A SUMMER PROGRAM WHERE THERE WAS A PRINCIPAL WHO ACTUALLY ROTATED BETWEEN THE THREE CAMPUSES THAT WE OFFERED. IT WAS A COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WE'D HAVE TO SEE WHAT OUR PARTNERSHIP LOOKS LIKE AT CLARK, BUT THAT COULD BE MAYBE A ROTATION. THE GUIDANCE COUNSELORS AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL CAN ROTATE. WE CAN MAYBE EXPLORE THAT, BUT MAYBE JUST HAVING SOMEBODY THAT THEY'RE FAMILIAR WITH AT THE CAMPUS MIGHT NOT BE A BAD OPTION TO STAY CONNECTED. IT COULD BE A STUDENT COUNCIL TYPE ADVISOR OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I LIKE THAT OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE. >> I LIKE THE IDEA OF OFFERING WHAT WE CAN HERE TO KEEP OUR FTE HERE, [01:00:04] ESPECIALLY WITH THE BUDGET TIMES THAT WE'RE COMING INTO I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT. >> [INAUDIBLE] RUNNING START STUDENTS, WE'RE STILL PUTTING A TON OF TIME INTO THEM AND ALL THE FTE GOES TO CLARK, WHICH DOESN'T EVEN COVER THE COST FOR RUNNING START KID AT CLARK. THE CLARK IS NOT BREAKING IN A BUNCH OF MONEY, BUT THEY'RE GETTING ALL THE MONEY AND WE STILL HAVE STAFF PUTTING HOURS INTO. >> YEAH, LARGEST HIGH SCHOOL IN CLARK COUNTY. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS REGARDING THE DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES? >> THAT'S GREAT. >> I WORK WITH MARYLAND AND WE'LL GET SOME DATA ON THE LIKE RUNNING PARTICIPATIONS AND OUTCOMES. >> I DID HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION. FOR OUR HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE IN THE CLASSROOM, THERE ARE NO FEES TO STUDENTS FOR THOSE CREDITS? >> THERE ARE FEES TO THE STUDENTS AND IT RANGES DEPENDING ON THE UNIVERSITY, FROM AROUND $260 A COURSE TO $390 A COURSE, AND THE STATE IS WORKING TO TRY TO PAY FOR THOSE ALONG WITH AP EXAMS. SO THE STATE HAS A REAL EYE ON EQUITY IN MAKING THOSE CREDITS MORE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL. [OVERLAPPING] WE DO HAVE WAIVERS FOR FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH STUDENTS IN OUR SYSTEM. IT'S NOT A UNIVERSAL EVERYONE'S PAID FOR, BUT FOR INTRODUCED A LOT OF STUDENTS, THERE'S A WAIVER FOR THEM. IT'S LIVING OUT THE MODEL OF THE SRL SUPPORT. SO THE LAST COUPLE OF THINGS, THE CARL PERKINS SO WE HAVE SOMETHING CALLED THE COMPREHENSIVE LOCAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT THAT'S REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS AND SO WE'LL BE UPDATING THIS CLNA THIS YEAR AND ONCE AGAIN, THAT'S A PARTNERSHIP WITH ALL OF THE REGIONAL CTE PROGRAMS AND WE HAVE STAKEHOLDERS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THAT AND ESSENTIALLY GIVE US FEEDBACK IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE CARL PERKINS ACT AND WE DID THAT PROCESS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO AND THIS IS OUR RECERTIFICATION YEAR. THEN THE LAST ONE IS PROGRAMS OF STUDY MUST CULMINATE IN AN INDUSTRY CERTIFICATE OR POST-SECONDARY CREDENTIAL. I MENTIONED THAT, BUT THAT'S WHY WE'RE ADDING THESE COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL COURSES AND THESE CREDENTIALS BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE GRADUATION PATHWAY HAS TO HAVE THAT FOR STUDENTS. WE HAVE SOME WE'VE DONE FOR YEARS SO FOR EXAMPLE, WE OFFER FIRST AID CPR TO EVERY STUDENT IN THE HEALTH PATHWAY AND THAT COUNTS BECAUSE IT'S IN THE PATHWAY. WE'RE STARTING TO ADD THINGS LIKE THE SHAPE CERTIFICATION, FAA DRONE CERTIFICATION, WE'LL LOOK TO ADD SOME ADOBE CERTIFICATIONS AND THE IDEA BEHIND IT IS THAT A STUDENT COULD CHOOSE TO GO INTO THE WORKFORCE AND HAVE LEVERAGE OVER A STUDENT WHO DIDN'T HAVE THOSE CERTIFICATIONS. OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS SAY, IT'S NICE, IT'S HELPFUL. BUT REALLY WE'LL TRAIN WHEN THEY GET HERE AND WHAT THEY TELL US A LOT. BUT IT DEFINITELY IS IT DOES ALIGN THE CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION TO AN END GOAL, WHICH I THINK IS VERY VALUABLE FOR OUR STUDENTS. THAT'S GOVERNOR CARL PERKINS ACT. THE OTHER THING I DIDN'T PUT IT IN THE SLIDESHOW, BUT IT'S IN THE REPORT. I DO WANT TO MENTION I HAVE A PERSONAL GOAL. I DIDN'T PUT A NUMBER TO THEM FOR IT, BUT I WANT TO GET 100 INTERNSHIPS THIS SCHOOL YEAR. SO FROM JULY 1ST OF THIS YEAR OF 2022 TO 2023, MY GOAL IS TO HAVE 100 STUDENTS DO AN INTERNSHIP. IT'S BEEN IN THE SIXTIES AND THIS YEAR IT WAS 48 AND MOSTLY WE WERE ON TRACK IN 2019. AND THAT WAS JUST STOPPED IN THE 19/20 SCHOOL YEAR WITH COVID. AND WE HONESTLY LOST LOTS OF GROUND IN THAT AREA AND THAT, TO ME, THAT'S A REALLY CRITICAL AREA, OUR STUDENTS WHO GET WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SHADOW, INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE. THEIR OUTCOMES ARE SO MUCH GREATER FOR WHATEVER THEIR CHOICES FOR THE NEXT STEPS UNIVERSITY GO RIGHT TO WHATEVER IT IS. THEY'RE MUCH GREATER IF THEY'VE HAD THAT EXPERIENCE. I'M ON THE STATE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE THAT DOES THIS SO I THINK IF I'M ON THAT COMMITTEE, I BETTER BE AN EXAMPLE TO THE STATE AND SO I'M REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT THAT AND SO OVER THE NEXT YEAR, THAT'LL BE A LARGE FOCUS, IS RE-ENGAGING WITH OUR REGIONAL PARTNERS THAT WE'VE HAD IN ORDER TO GET STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES ON WORKSITES. SO IT'S NOT IN THE PRESENTATION, BUT I DID WANT TO MENTION THAT THROUGHOUT A VERY SPECIFIC NUMBER. >> JUST BRIEFLY WE'RE WORKING VERY CLOSELY WITH A PORT RIGHT NOW OF CANVAS TO PROVIDE MORE INTERNSHIPS TOO, THEY'RE LOOKING TO DIVERSIFY SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THEY'RE DOING AND THEY'VE REACHED OUT TO US AND SAID, HEY, CAN WE GET A MODEL AND DEREK IS WORKING ON THAT AS WELL SO THAT WE CAN TRAIN THEIR TENANTS ON HOW TO WORK WITH OUR INTERNS AND VICE VERSA SO REALLY INTERESTING, WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE ABOUT THAT MORE AT THE STATE OF THE COMMUNITY ON THURSDAY, [01:05:04] BUT DAVID AND HIS TEAM REALLY ARE EXCITED ABOUT THAT. >> WE ARE IN ADOBE CAMPUS WITH THE CREATIVE CLOUD IS THAT INSTALLED ON EVERY CHROMEBOOK FOR EVERY STUDENT? DOES EVERY STUDENT HAVE ACCESS TO ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD OR ONLY THE STUDENTS THAT ARE INVOLVED IN CERTAIN CLASSES? >> CURRENTLY IT'S ONLY STUDENTS WHO ARE ENROLLED IN A COURSE THAT WOULD REQUIRE IT. WE HAVE 2,500 STUDENTS' SEAT LICENSE, SO WE DEPLOY THOSE. THE OTHER THING ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF CREATIVE CLOUD IS YOU NEED TO HAVE A PRETTY NICE COMPUTER TO RUN IT AND SO WE'RE ACTUALLY TALKED TO HIM THIS MORNING ABOUT THIS. BUT GOOGLE JUST PARTNERED WITH ADOBE AND AUTODESK AND SOLID WORKS, WHICH ARE THREE COMPUTER INTENSE APPLICATIONS AND GOOGLE IS STARTING TO OFFER CLOUD-BASED ADOBE. SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I THINK COULD BE A REAL GAME CHANGER FOR OUR STUDENTS BECAUSE THE WAY ADOBE WORKS RIGHT NOW IF I HAVE A CREATIVE CLOUD ACCOUNT. IF A STUDENT DOES, THEY CAN DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE ONTO THEIR COMPUTER. THE SOFTWARE COMPUTER HAS TO BUILD OR RUN THE SOFTWARE AND THE CHROMEBOOK, JUST, THERE'S NO SHOT AT THAT. [OVERLAPPING]. >> THEN THE GOOGLE ONES FASCINATING BECAUSE ALL THE SERVER PROCESSING HAPPENS IN THE CLOUD SO THE ONLY THING YOU'RE DOING IS EDITING THIS WAY. NOW, IT'S STILL DIFFICULT TO DO INDUSTRY STANDARD WORK ON A SMALL SCREEN AND NO MOUSE, ETC SO WE'LL HAVE SOME HURDLES TO GET THROUGH, BUT I THINK IT'LL BE A REAL GAME CHANGER FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO DON'T PERHAPS HAVE THOSE MACHINES AT HOME. >> YES. ARE WE FILLING OUT THE 2500 LICENSES CURRENTLY? >> CLOSE, SO WE HAVE I THINK THERE'S. >> [OVERLAPPING] >> YEAH. THERE'S NINE DIFFERENT CLASSES AT CHS ALONE AND EACH CLASS IS ABOUT 25 TO 30 KIDS. THEN WE HAVE CLUSTER DISCOVERY SO WE'RE PRETTY CLOSE TO THAT. >> YOU BROUGHT UP AUTODESK AND THAT MADE ME THINK OF INTERNSHIPS SINCE AUTODESK IS IN PORTLAND, DO WE LOOK AT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES NOT JUST IN OUR REGION, IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON, BUT ACROSS THE RIVER AS WELL FOR THINGS LIKE THAT? >> THE LEG UP THAT I INHERITED WHEN I CAME TO OUR DISTRICT IS THE MAGNET PROGRAM AND WHAT THAT'S DONE IS LAID A FOUNDATION FOR WHAT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM COULD AND SHOULD LOOK LIKE AND SELECT OUR MAGNET STUDENTS GOT OHSU AND UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND AND AUTODESK AND THEY GO ALL OVER THE REGION FOR DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES AND THAT MODEL IS WHAT WE HOPEFULLY CAN CONTINUE TO REPLICATE. SOME OF THE WORK THAT I'VE DONE WITH THE STATE HAS SHOWN US THAT THE EXPERIENCES REALLY CLOSE TO THE DISTRICT ARE SOME OF THE MOST VALUABLE BECAUSE YOU CAN ENGAGE STUDENTS WHO MAYBE DON'T HAVE A CAR, DON'T HAVE THE ABILITY TO GET TO THOSE. I VISITED THE CHIEF SCHAR HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS IN TACOMA AND IT'S A TRIBAL COMPACT SCHOOL AND THEY HAVE THEIR STUDENTS. EVERY KID DOES AN INTERNSHIP IN THE WHOLE DISTRICT. ABOUT 90 PERCENT DO IT IN FOR THE TRIBE. NOW THEY HAVE A UNIQUE THING BECAUSE THEY HAVE LIKE A CASINO AND ENTERTAINMENT VENUE SO KIDS WILL GO DO LIKE AV AT THE CASINO OR THEY'LL GO DO TRANSPORTATION THROUGH THAT. BUT THAT'S A GREAT MODEL BECAUSE WE CAN HAVE OUR STUDENTS DO INTERNSHIPS IN OUR OWN DISTRICT, GET THOSE WORK EXPERIENCES, GET A CREDIT FOR IT AND THEN I REALLY DO LIKE X JOB. SO THAT'S SOMETHING I THINK WHERE WE HAVE SOME LOW-HANGING FRUIT IS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT AND WE'VE DONE THAT. WE'VE HIRED I WORKED WITH SHERMAN AND WE HAVE TEXTS IN THE IT DEPARTMENT MULTIPLE TIMES. THAT'S A GREAT EXPERIENCE. THEY GO IN, THEY GET TO REBUILD A CHROMEBOOK AND I LIKED THIS WORK AND THEN IT HELPS HIM TO PURSUE THAT PASSION. I THINK YEAH. >> I THINK HE'LL PUT IT OUT, A PUSH COMMUNICATION TO ALL FAMILIES, ANYBODY IN THE DISTRICT TO SAY, HEY, YOU WORK NEARBY. A LITTLE MARKETING CAMPAIGN TO GET MORE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES, I THINK CREATIVELY. >> THAT'S BEEN ONE OF THE BEST PARTS ABOUT FOR ME, ABOUT BEING CANVASES, THE PARTNERSHIP WE HAVE WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR PATRONS, FRANKLY, IT'S BEEN AWESOME. AS WE BREAK FREE OF THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, THAT'S SOMETHING ABSOLUTELY WILL DO IS JUST CONTINUE TO TRY AND REBUILD THOSE PARTNERSHIPS THAT WE HAVE HAD OVER THE YEARS. >> [BACKGROUND]. >> OF HYPER SHADE. ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OVER THE BORDER? I MENTIONED I'M HOPING NEXT, BOARD MEETING, THE PLANET FOR THE FEDERAL COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS NEEDS TO BE AN AGENDA ITEM, CONSENT ITEM, I THINK IS WHAT IT IS. >> RIGHT. >> THANK YOU. >> THAT WAS A GOOD CONVERSATION. I ENJOYED THAT. I THINK YOU'VE STRUCK A NERVE WITH US IN A GOOD WAY. I BELIEVE THAT'S EVERYTHING ON OUR AGENDA, CORRECT, DOCTOR A? [01:10:02] >> THAT IS CORRECT. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME, EVERYONE. >> WELL, THEN WE ARE ADJOURNED AT 05:41 PM. * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
