[00:00:05] >> THAT WORKED. [LAUGHTER] GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE, [1. REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - 5:30 PM] OR GOOD EVENING, AND WELCOME TO OUR SEPTEMBER 26TH BOARD MEETING. WE ARE GOING TO START WITH THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, AND THAT WILL BE LED TONIGHT BY DOUG CLINTON. >> PLEASE STAND AND FACE THE FLAG. >> >> THANK YOU, DOUG. NEXT IS OUR LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT, WHICH WILL BE LED BY TRACY MALONE. >> I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GEOGRAPHICAL REGION OF CAMAS IS LOCATED ON THE ANCESTRAL AND TERRITORIAL LANDS OF THE CHINOOK AND COWLITZ PEOPLE, AND THAT THE CHINOOK ARE STILL FIGHTING TO BE A FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBE ON THEIR OWN LAND. >> THANK YOU, TRACY. ITEM NUMBER 2 ON OUR AGENDA 2A, [2. STUDENT REPORTS] WE HAVE A COUPLE OF STUDENT REPORTS. FIRST, WE'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM OUR ROBOTICS TEAM, AND COACH BRUCE WHITEFIELD IS GOING TO LET US KNOW WHO'S COMING ON UP. >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR HAVING US. I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE CAMAS WASHOUGAL AND HAWKINSON ROBOTICS TEAM. WE ARE ACTUALLY A VERY UNIQUE ORGANIZATION BY AGREEMENT BETWEEN MULTIPLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT WE ARE ABLE TO SERVE THE ENTIRE REGION AROUND OUR VICINITY INTO OUR ROBOTICS TEAM. WE HAD A VERY INTERESTING YEAR THIS YEAR. BUT MAYBE I'D LIKE TO MENTION A FUNNY THING. WHEN I LOOK AROUND THE ROOM, I WALK AROUND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, I SEE SIGNS OF THE ROBOTICS TEAM IN WAYS YOU DON'T REALLY RECOGNIZE. ONE OF THEM IS THIS LITTLE ITEM OVER HERE IN THE CORNER, THAT LITTLE ROBOT OVER THERE. I THINK IT WAS THREE YEARS AGO, THREE STUDENTS ON THE ROBOTICS TEAM WERE ASKED AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL IF THEY COULD DO SOME ANALYSIS ON USING ROBOTS TO CLEAN THE ROOMS AROUND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AS A HELP FOR THE FACILITIES' ORGANIZATION. THEY SPENT A SEMESTER ANALYZING DIFFERENT ROBOTS AND MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS ON THAT. THEN I WALK IN HERE, AND I SEE ONE OF THE ROBOTS BEING DEPLOYED. I GET THESE LITTLE REMINDERS LIKE THAT, AND THEY DON'T ALWAYS HAVE THE TEAM LOGO ON IT. [LAUGHTER] ANYWAY, I'M NOT HERE TO TALK TO YOU REALLY, I'M HERE TO INTRODUCE THE ROBOTICS TEAM. ELLA, COME ON UP. ONE OF THE THINGS WE ALWAYS TRIED TO TEACH IN OUR ROBOTICS IS GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM. IT'S A HALLMARK OF THE PROGRAM INTERNATIONALLY. WE WOULD TAKE IT RATE HEART, AND SO WE RECEIVE A LOT FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND IT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR US TO SAY THANKS. >> WE CAME HERE TODAY TO SHOW OUR APPRECIATION FOR, BRUCE, TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT IMPACTS THE ROBOTICS TEAM HAS HAD ON THE DISTRICT, STUFF LIKE THE ROBOTS, BUT WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO ANY OF THIS WITHOUT YOUR HELP WITH GIVING US SPACE. OUR BEAUTIFUL SHOP DOWN THE STREET WITH A TON OF BEAUTIFUL MACHINES, AND THEN ALLOW US TO LEARN AND DO REALLY ADVANCED MACHINING. FOR EXAMPLE, NOT A LOT OF OTHER KIDS THEIR AGE GET, IT'S ALWAYS THE STEM NAUSEUM, JUST A COUPLE LITTLE WALK AWAY, GIVES US AN INCREDIBLE SPACE TO TEST OUR ROBOTS AND SHARE THE SPACE WITH OTHER TEAMS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WITH THAT, WE'RE ABLE TO BUILD SKILLS LIKE TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP. FOR EXAMPLE, I'M A PRESIDENT. WITH OUR STUDENT LEADERSHIP, WE'RE ABLE TO LEARN SKILLS IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT NOT A LOT OF OTHER STUDENTS GET. WE WANT TO THANK YOU FOR GIVING US THIS OPPORTUNITY BY PRESENTING A POSTER AND A THANK YOU LETTER TO YOU. WHO SHOULD I GIVE THIS TO? [APPLAUSE] >> THANK YOU. WE LOOK FORWARD TO STOPPING BY THE STEM NAUSEUM SOON. THAT WAS FUN, WE GOT TO DO THAT LAST YEAR AND THAT WAS AN AMAZING SPACE. [00:05:03] THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR WORK AND FOR HOW YOU REPRESENT US. IT'S FANTASTIC. YOU CAN HANG AROUND OR YOU'RE FREE TO GO AND GET BACK TO WORK. [LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] THANK YOU. NEXT ON OUR AGENDA IS A STUDENT REPORT FROM LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL, JUSTIN FISHER. ARE YOU BY YOURSELF OR IS THERE SOMEONE ELSE? IT'S LIKE IT'S YOU. GO AHEAD, THAT'S FINE. COME ON UP, JUSTIN. >> MY NAME IS JUSTIN FISHER AND I'M A REPRESENTATIVE FROM LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND AS AN 8TH GRADER. FIRST THING I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE IS THAT OUR LIBERTY SPS HAS CHOSEN A THEME. THAT THEME IS BE THE DIFFERENCE. WE REALLY WANT TO USE THIS TO OUR ADVANTAGE. WE WANT TO BE THE DIFFERENCE IN KIDS LIVES AND WE WANT TO DO THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MATTER THE MOST. ONE OF OUR SECOND THINGS IS OUR TRACK. WE ARE ALMOST OVER TRACK, I ACTUALLY JUST GOT BACK FROM IT. BUT RIGHT NOW, WE'RE UNDEFEATED AND MOST OF THE TIME WE'VE WON BY A LANDSLIDE, SO WE'RE DOING REALLY GOOD IN THAT. OUR BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM IS NEARLY DONE, BUT THEY HAVE COMPETED IN THE NIKE INVITATIONAL AND JACK AND JILL TOURNAMENT. ANOTHER THING FOR TRACK IS THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE BEEN SETTING RECORDS AND KEEP IMPROVING, LIKE KEATON JACKQUES, HE HAS A JUMP OF 5'7'' FOR HIGH JUMP, WHICH IS ONE OF OUR SCHOOL RECORDS. ANOTHER THING IS OUR LIBERTY SB HAS PUT TOGETHER TWO SPIRIT DAYS SO FAR THIS YEAR. THE FIRST ONE, IT WAS ON THURSDAY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THURSDAYS. BASICALLY, WE LET KIDS DRESS UP IN WHATEVER THEY WANTED TO WEAR TO SCHOOL, AND THEN WE'RE ABLE TO TAKE PICTURES OF THEM, AND WE PRINTED OUT THE PHOTOS AND THEY'RE ABLE TO HANG THOSE IN THEIR LOCKERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO REMIND THEM OF THE FIRST-YEAR OF SCHOOL. WE ALSO HAVE A SCHOOL COLORS SPIRIT DAY ON WEDNESDAY. WE TRY TO MAKE THAT EARLY OF EACH WEDNESDAY WE HAVE EACH MONTH AND WE REALLY WANT TO TRY TO MAKE THOSE AT LEAST ONE EVERY MONTH WHERE STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED. WE'RE ALSO TRACKING PATIENTS WHERE WE CAN SEE WHAT SPIRIT DAYS ARE DOING THE BEST. ANOTHER THING IS THROUGH OUR RING NEWS, WE ARE HONORING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH BY DOING LOTS A YEAR, WHICH IS BASICALLY A BINGO GAME, AND WE'RE DRAWING A CARD EACH DAY ON THE RING NEWS, AND THE CLASS THAT GETS THE FIRST ROW WILL WIN A POPCORN PARTY, I'M PRETTY SURE. ANOTHER THING IS OCTOBER WILL BRING TWO FUNDRAISERS TO LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL. THE FIRST BEING OCTOBER, IT'S ONE OF THE LEAST DONATED. SOCKS IS ONE OF THE LEAST DONATED ITEMS TO A HOMELESS SHELTERS, BUT IT'S ONE OF THE MOST REQUESTED BECAUSE WINTER COMING UP. ANOTHER THING IS THE RIP CITY POPCORN FUNDRAISER. KIDS WILL SELL POPCORN AND FOR EACH POPCORN THEY SELL, THEY'LL GET REWARDS. THERE'S A BIG RAFFLE AT THE END AND IT'S REALLY FUN. ANOTHER THING IS THAT OCTOBER IS ALSO DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH, AND WE REALLY WANT TO GET OUR STUDENTS TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF DISABILITIES THERE ARE AND HOW WE CAN HELP INCLUDE THOSE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY. LASTLY, IS WE HAVE OUR FIRST UNITY WEEK IN OCTOBER. UNITY WEEK IS DESIGNING TO BRING STUDENTS TOGETHER. WE'RE TRYING TO BRING STUDENTS TOGETHER, THAT MAY BE DIFFERENT OR MAYBE THEY DON'T GET ALONG TOO WELL AND WE'RE TRYING TO BRING THEM TOGETHER USING THIS. OUR THEME IS BE THE DIFFERENCE, AND WE WANT TO USE THAT TO OUR ADVANTAGE WHERE WE CAN BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER TO WHERE WE CAN GET. THANK YOU. >> JUSTIN, THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU, JUSTIN. [APPLAUSE] >> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FOR JUSTIN? >> I THINK THE ONLY THING THAT WE PROBABLY WANT TO KNOW IS, WHEN IS ANYTHING BUT A BACKPACK DAY? SORRY, GARY MOLAR IS HIDING HIS HEAD. [LAUGHTER]. >> I'M NOT DRUNK, AND I AM AWARE OF THAT. >> I'M JUST KIDDING. I JUST KNOW IT'S A BIG HIT. WE WERE THERE FOR ANYTHING BUT A BACKPACK DAY, SO WE'RE COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. VERY COOL. THANK YOU, JUSTIN. ITEM 3 ON OUR AGENDA IS BOARD COMMUNICATIONS, [3. BOARD COMMUNICATION] SO I'LL OPEN IT UP FOR ANYBODY WHO HAS ANYTHING THEY WANT TO SHARE. >> GENERAL ASSEMBLY FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, I'LL SEND YOU ALL AN EMAIL. MAYBE WE CAN SPLIT TIME TO LOGIN IF PEOPLE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY. I'LL SEND MORE INFORMATION LATER. >> ANYBODY ELSE? I WILL SAY THAT I MET WITH A STUDENT FROM LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL. I MET WITH AN 8TH GRADER WHO GAVE US A PRESENTATION ON, OR GAVE ME A PRESENTATION ON THE VALUES OF A FOUR-DAY SCHOOL WEEK. I DO HAVE SOME INFORMATION THAT I FORWARDED TO YOU, AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, LET ME KNOW. BUT IT WAS A FUN PRESENTATION OR THEY'RE GETTING READY FOR THEIR 8TH GRADE DEBATES AND STUDENTS DID A WONDERFUL JOB. IF YOU WANT ANY MORE INFORMATION ON THAT, I'M HAPPY TO FORWARD IT TO YOU AND I KNOW THAT SHE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO SEND ME SOME MORE INFORMATION AS WELL. ALWAYS FUN TO HEAR FROM THE STUDENTS WHENEVER WE CAN. MOVING RIGHT ALONG, ITEM NUMBER 4 ON OUR AGENDA IS PUBLIC COMMENT. [4. PUBLIC COMMENTS] [00:10:05] THE BOARD VALUES PUBLIC INPUT. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD IS TO ACTIVELY LISTEN AND REFLECT ON PUBLIC COMMENTS. THE BOARD MAY ONLY DISCUSS AND ACT UPON ITEMS INCLUDED ON THE WRITTEN AGENDA. FOR THAT REASON, BOARD MEMBERS CANNOT RESPOND TO ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS DURING PUBLIC COMMENT, BUT CAN ASK THE SUPERINTENDENT TO FOLLOW UP ON ISSUES RAISED DURING PUBLIC TESTIMONY. GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC INPUT EMPHASIZE THE RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS. BOISTEROUS CONDUCT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AT ANY MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, NOR WILL ANY HARASSING OR THREATENING REMARKS BE TOLERATED. COMPLAINTS ABOUT INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEE SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE AS A PERSONNEL MATTER. EACH PERSON PROVIDING PUBLIC COMMENT WILL HAVE A TOTAL OF THREE MINUTES. ONCE CALLED UPON, PLEASE STEP UP TO THE MICROPHONE, FACE THE BOARD AND STATE YOUR NAME FOR THE RECORD. THE BELL WILL RING AT THREE MINUTES TO REMIND YOU THAT YOUR TIME IS UP. WE'LL GO IN ORDER OF THOSE WHO SIGNED IN ON THE SIGN-UP SHEET, IT LOOKS LIKE OUR FIRST PUBLIC COMMENT IS FROM BOB FRIEDLAND. >> GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS BOB FRIEDLAND AND I'M A MEMBER OF THE CLARK COUNTY DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY ADVISORY BOARD. I AM AN OLDER RETIRED WHITE MAN WITH CURLY GRAY HAIR AND GLASSES. THE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES ADVISORY BOARD IS CHARGED WITH PROVIDING COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT CLARK COUNTY. THE BOARD THEN ADVISES AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE CLARK COUNTY COUNSELORS ON ISSUES AND SERVICES RELATED TO DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY. I'D LIKE TO THANK JUSTIN FROM LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR BRINGING UP THE OCTOBER MENTIONED THAT IT IS IN OCTOBER, A DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH. AS PART OF THIS CELEBRATION, THE ADVISORY BOARD WILL BE HOSTING A DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS AWARDS. THESE AWARDS HONOR PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN CLARK COUNTY WHO CONTRIBUTE TO A DYNAMIC, PRODUCTIVE, AND INCLUSIVE WORKFORCE. MANY OF THE NOMINEES AND AWARD WINNERS ARE FORMER STUDENTS HERE IN CLARK COUNTY. THAT CELEBRATION ALSO RECOGNIZE THE EXTRAORDINARY EFFORTS OF LARGE AND SMALL BUSINESSES WHO EMPLOY PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN OUR COMMUNITY. THIS YEAR, THE FREE HYBRID EVENT WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER FIFTH, FROM 4:00-6:00 PM. THE EVENT WILL BE STREAMED ONLINE FOR THOSE WHO PREFER TO WATCH FROM HOME, ALIVE, IN-PERSON EVENT WILL, BE HELD AT CLARK COLLEGE IN GUYSEY HALL, WHICH IS LOCATED AT 1933 FORT VANCOUVER WAY IN VANCOUVER. IN-PERSON SEATING MAY BE LIMITED. WE ARE ASKING FOR REGISTRATION SO THAT WE MAY KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE TO EXPECT IN-PERSON. FOR REGISTRATION INFORMATION. PLEASE CALL 564-397-2130 OR SEND AN EMAIL TO DD PROGRAM@CLARK.WA.GOV. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. >> THANK YOU, BOB. NEXT ON OUR LIST IS ERIC CHILEAN. >> HI, ERIC CHILEAN. THANK YOU ALL FOR CHOOSING TO LEAD. RARE IS THE PERSON WHO CHOOSES TO LEAD. HERE'S THE PROPOSITION, I THINK FROM WHICH OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT OPERATED UNDER THE LAST TWO-AND-HALF YEARS, WE CAN SHUT DOWN SCHOOLS, COVER CHILDREN'S FACES, FORCE DISTANCING WITHOUT INFLICTING CONSEQUENCES ON OUR STUDENTS THAT ARE WORSE THAN THE DISEASE RISK ITSELF. WAS THIS PROPOSITION FANCIFUL AND IRRATIONAL? OR WAS IT PRUDENT AND WISE. OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT THOUGHT TO DEMAND SPECIFIC ANSWERS FROM DR. ALAN MELANIN, THE COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH, AND THE OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION TO THE TWO FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. ONE, WOULD WE CLOSE IN-PERSON SCHOOLS FOR 18 MONTHS IN FAVOR OF REMOTE SCHOOLING, KNOWING WHAT WE KNOW TODAY AND TWO, KNOWING WHAT WE KNOW TODAY, WOULD WE MASK AND DISTANCE STUDENTS FOR OVER TWO YEARS AND TREAT THE UNVACCINATED DIFFERENT THAN THE VACCINATED STUDENTS. THEN I'D ASK THEM TO SUPPORT THEIR ANSWERS, PROVIDING THE BEST SPECIFIC SCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS AVAILABLE TO HELP US UNDERSTAND. HERE'S JUST A FEW QUANTITATIVE QUESTIONS THAT COULD AND SHOULD BE ANSWERED. HOW MANY MORE CLINICALLY DEPRESSED STUDENTS ARE WE SEEING THEN BEFORE THESE MEASURES WERE MANDATED? IT'S AT LEAST 25 PERCENT MORE FROM WHAT I'VE UNCOVERED. TWO, HOW MANY MORE STUDENTS ARE IDEATING, ATTEMPTING OR COMMITTING SUICIDE THAN BEFORE THESE MEASURES WERE MANDATED. I THINK THAT'S AT LEAST PLUS 20 PERCENT. [00:15:02] HOW MANY MORE STUDENTS FAILED CLASSES THAN PREVIOUS YEARS. A CANVAS SCHOOL DISTRICT REPORT CARD SAYS 73 PERCENT MORE, ALMOST 1,300 MORE STUDENTS FAILED A CLASS THAN PRIOR TO THESE MEASURES. HOW MUCH INTELLECTUAL CAPACITY WAS LOST? 6.4 PERCENT FEWER STUDENTS MET ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS, 370 MORE STUDENTS DID NOT MEET THE STANDARD. 10 PERCENT FEWER STUDENTS MET THE MATH GRADE LEVEL STANDARD. OVER 500 MORE STUDENTS DIDN'T MEET THE MATH LEVEL OF STANDARD. THEN ASK, WHAT WAS THE PROBABILITY OF A STUDENT COVID FATALITY IN THE CANVAS SCHOOL DISTRICT OVER THE PAST YEARS. MY MATH USING THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH COVID DATA SAYS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 0 AND 0.000012. NOW, I'M NOT CERTAINLY NOT THE EXPERT HERE, BUT AS MY E-MAIL DETAILED LAST WEEK, THE CHANCE THAT A STUDENT IN CANVAS CONTRACTED AND DIED FROM COVID IS MUCH CLOSER TO 0 THAN 0.000012. BUT I'LL DEFER TO ANY RIGOROUS ANALYSIS FROM THESE HEALTH AND EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS. I'M NOT THE EXPERT. GETTING THESE ANSWERS WILL TAKE GRIT, FOCUS AND UNWIELDY INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY. BUREAUCRATS DON'T WANT TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR MOST CONSEQUENTIAL DECISIONS. BUT I DON'T SEE HOW ANY ORGANIZATION, ESPECIALLY PUBLIC EDUCATION, CAN MOVE INTO THE FUTURE WITHOUT BEING CRYSTAL CLEAR ABOUT WHAT THEY LEARNED AND WHAT THEY'LL DO DIFFERENTLY MOVING FORWARD, I CONTINUE TO BELIEVE THAT THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC EDUCATION WILL REQUIRE LEADERS TO LEAN INTO THE TENSION OF IDEAS LOCALLY TO FIND A TRUTH THAT CAN BE BUILT UPON. THANKS AGAIN FOR LEADING AND THANK YOU ALL FOR LISTENING. >> THANK YOU. THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF PUBLIC COMMENTS. I'M GOING TO MOVE ON TO ITEM NUMBER 6, OUR CONSENT AGENDA. [6. CONSENT AGENDA] I WOULD ENTERTAIN A MOTION IN A SECOND FOR APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA. >> I'LL MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA. >> SECONDED. >> MOVED BY TRACY AND SECONDED BY ERICA. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR. >> AYE. >> ANY OPPOSED? >> MOTION CARRIES AGALLE. NUMBER 7, OPEN AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION. [7. OPEN AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION] WE HAVE A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT FOR OUR CANVAS COACHES ASSOCIATION IN FRONT OF US TO VOTE ON. YOU WERE ALL SENT A COPY OF THAT AND FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS TO READ IT AT HOME THAT'S POSTED ON OUR BOARD DOCS PAGE. ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON THAT? OTHERWISE? YOUR MIC. >> THANK YOU. I JUST WANT TO EXPRESS MY APPRECIATION TO ADMINISTRATION AND HUMAN RESOURCES AND THE COACHING STAFF FOR INCLUDING THE ITEM OF TRAININGS IN THAT. I KNOW THAT THAT HAS BEEN POINT OF SOME CONCERN. I APPRECIATE A WILLINGNESS TO BE STEPPING FORWARD TO HELP US ADDRESS SOME OF THESE ONGOING ISSUES OVER THE YEARS. I THINK THE DISTRICT PLAYERS AND THE PARENTS ARE WELL SERVED BY THAT ELEMENT OF THIS CONTRACT, SO I APPRECIATE IT. SUPERINTENDENT, ABSALON FOR HAVING INCLUDED IT IN CONTRACT AND WITH THAT I WOULDN'T MAKE A MOTION FOR APPROVAL. >> I'LL SECOND. >> IT WAS MOVED BY DOUG, SECONDED BY CONNIE. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? >> JUST QUICKLY TO RESPOND. THIS IS REALLY A LABOR OF LOVE BEFORE REALLY, RIGHT, AS I CAME INTO THE POSITION AND NOW BEYOND. REALLY THANKS TO THE STAFF FOR WORKING SO HARD AND BARGAINING THIS AND GETTING THIS DONE. AS WELL AS THE COACHES WHO REALLY CAME TO THE TABLE AND I THINK HAD A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW WE'RE GOING TO MOVE FORWARD AS A DISTRICT. REALLY A LOT OF HARD WORK HERE FROM THE TEAM. I APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO POTENTIALLY GET THIS APPROVED. >> GREAT. WE HAVE A MOTION AND A SECOND. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? >> AYE. >> ANY OPPOSED? THAT'S UNANIMOUS MOTION CARRIES. NEXT ON OUR AGENDA IS ITEM 8A, [8. POLICY REVIEW] APPROVAL AND ADOPTION OF POLICY 4218, WHICH IS A LANGUAGE ACCESS POLICY. ERICA AND I MET AS THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE TO REVIEW THIS POLICY AND IT'S BEEN PASSED ON TO US BY LISA GRASSET AND DORY MCCARTER WHO HAVE ALSO REVIEWED IT. [00:20:02] I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAD ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ABOUT IT. THERE'S A TIMEFRAME ELEMENT TO IT THAT BY LAW, WE HAVE TO GET IT INTO EFFECT BY OCTOBER 1ST, WHICH IS WHY WE'RE GOING TO SUSPEND THE RULES FOR THIS AND DO A FIRST SECOND READING ON THIS. IN YOUR MOTION, I'D BE LOOKING FOR A FIRST AND SECOND READING AND ADOPTION. >> I WILL MAKE A MOTION FOR THE FIRST SECOND READING OF POLICY 4218, LANGUAGE ACCESS. >> I'LL SECOND THAT. >> MOVED BY TRACY, SECONDED BY DOUG. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? >> AYE. >> ANY OPPOSED? MOTION CARRIES THERE. ITEM NUMBER 9, [9. REPORTS] WE HAVE A FEW REPORTS WE'RE GOING TO GO THROUGH. I'LL THROW IT OVER TO DR. ANZALONE AND FIRST FOR HIS SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. >> THANKS, COREY AND GOOD TO SEE EVERYBODY TONIGHT. I WANTED TO START OFF, GAIL, DO YOU WANT ME TO MOVE THROUGH THIS ONE OR YOU HAVE IT? WANTED TO START OFF WITH JUST QUICKLY WITH A LITTLE REVIEW. THANK YOU. FROM THE JULY PLANNING SESSION AND JUST CATCH UP ON SOME BENCHMARKS. PER YOUR DIRECTION WE SPOKE A LOT ABOUT MEETING AND GETTING TO KNOW OUR DEPARTMENTS, OUR SCHOOLS SITES. I'VE BEEN VERY ACTIVE. I'M DOING THAT I'M PROBABLY BACK SINCE FEBRUARY, BUT REALLY MORE REGULARLY SINCE JUNE. SO FAR I'VE BEEN ABLE TO HAVE SOME WONDERFUL MEETINGS WITH OUR HR TEAM, FACILITIES, TECHNOLOGY, AND OF COURSE OUR COACHES. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR APPROVAL ON THAT CONTRACT THIS EVENING. ALSO, OUR CAMAS COMMUNITY ED, I THINK I SAID LAST TIME I WAS ABLE TO BE AT THE OPENING OF SOME OF THE PRE-K PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS MEETING WITH NUTRITION SERVICES. WE'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM LAURA. TODAY WE'VE HAD A LOT OF DISCUSSIONS ABOUT MOVING INTO THE FUTURE AND WHAT THAT PROGRAM LOOKS LIKE. THEN LAST WEEK WE STARTED OUR WEEKLY SITE VISITS AND SO I JUST WANT TO THANK OUR PRINCIPLES AND THE ADMINISTRATION TEAMS FROM EACH OF THE SCHOOLS FOR WELCOMED ME INTO SOME OF THEIR PLC TIMES, SOME OF THEIR STAFF TIME, AND THOSE WILL CONTINUE ALL THE WAY INTO, I BELIEVE, NOVEMBER. FIFTEEN SCHOOLS DOESN'T SEEM LIKE A LOT UNTIL YOU'RE TRYING TO ORGANIZE ALL OF THAT. REALLY GOOD DIALOGUE WITH OUR TEACHERS AND OUR PRINCIPALS AS THEY GET TO KNOW ME AND I GET TO KNOW THEM. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY. AS YOU KNOW, WE HAD THE STATE OF THE COMMUNITY AND I WAS VERY FORTUNATE TO JOIN MAYOR HOGAN AND DAVE REP FOR JUST REALLY AN ASSESSMENT OF WHERE WE'RE GOING. THANK YOU, DOUG FOR YOUR MC AS USUAL, AMAZING JOB. I LOVE SOME OF THE LITTLE CRIBS YOU THROW IN THERE. IT KEEPS ME ON MY TOES. BUT WE REALLY TALKED A LOT ABOUT OUR PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE SCHOOLS, THE CITY, AND THE PORT. I REALLY AM EXCITED ABOUT SOME OF THE PROJECTS THAT ARE HAPPENING WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR, ALL THE WAY PROBABLY INTO THE NEXT DECADE OR SO IN AND AROUND CAMAS. JUST WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THAT FOR ANYBODY WHO DIDN'T HEAR THAT PRESENTATION. REALLY GOOD STUFF GOING ON AND THAT'S A PORTION OF WHAT WE'RE SHARING WITH THE SCHOOLS. BUT WE'RE ALSO TRYING TO FINE TUNE IT TO WHAT ARE WE DOING AS A BOARD AND AS A SUPERINTENDENT, AS A CABINET TO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOLS MORE SPECIFICALLY. IT'S A JOINT OPERATION BETWEEN THOSE TWO. CITIZENS ADVISORY WILL CONTINUE. THANK YOU TO GAIL IN HER WORK IN TRYING TO GET APPLICANTS FOR THAT. WE'RE EXCITED TO START THAT BACKUP ON OCTOBER 3RD. WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH OUR CHAIR AND OUR CO-CHAIR TO PUT TOGETHER AN AGENDA. I THINK THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME NICE LITTLE CHANGES TO THAT. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE THE ROUND TABLE FORMAT SO EVERYBODY FEELS VERY INCLUDED IN THE CONVERSATION AND WE COULD GET SOME THINGS DONE THAT WAY. OUR EMPLOYEE ADVISORY COMMITTEE WILL KICK OFF, OUR INAUGURAL MEETING WILL BE TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11TH, AND THAT'S GOING TO BE QUARTERLY. SO WE REALLY ONLY HAVE FOUR MEETINGS. BUT THE SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL AND THE DEPARTMENTS HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL WITH NOMINATING PEOPLE FROM THEIR VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS. THAT'S REALLY MORE OF AN INPUT SESSION, WE'RE REALLY NOT GOING TO DO A LOT OF VOTING ON THINGS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. IT'S REALLY GOING TO BE MORE FOR ME TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SYSTEMS THAT ARE HAPPENING AND WHERE WE CAN HELP IMPROVE SYSTEMS, WHETHER IT'S TRANSPORTATION AT THE SCHOOL SITES OR IN OTHER PARTS OF THE DISTRICT. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SHARING SOME OF THE FEEDBACK WITH YOU AS WELL, BOTH FORMALLY AND INFORMALLY. THEN OF COURSE, THE STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE, PROBABLY MY FAVORITE. I'M EXCITED TO MEET WITH THOSE STUDENTS AND REALLY START TO PASS THE TORCH. [00:25:01] MOST LIKELY TO OUR NEW EQUITY COORDINATOR OR OAI COORDINATOR, WHICH WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON. THAT IS TO BE DETERMINED BUT WE WANTED TO GET THAT POSITION SET FIRST BECAUSE THAT PERSON WILL MOST LIKELY LEAD THAT STUDENT ADVISORY. MY HOPE IS THAT A LOT OF THE EQUITY WORK WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE STUDENTS, BUT WE'RE REALLY GOING TO LEAVE THAT UP TO THE KIDS AND WHAT THEY WANT TO WORK ON. BUT OUR HOPE IS THAT THAT'S GOING TO BE A BIG PART OF WHAT THEY DO DURING THEIR MEETINGS. THE BUDGET COMMITTEE WILL CONTINUE ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20TH. THAT WILL BE OUR FIRST MEETING AND THEN OUR CITY SCHOOLS, WHICH I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT'S INSTRUMENTAL MEETING AND I THINK THAT COMMITTEE IS JUST REALLY WORKING IN CONCERT WITH SOME OF THE PARTNERSHIPS THAT I SPOKE OF, AND THAT WE'LL START BACK UP ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 24TH. LASTLY ON THIS SLIDE, ALL OF OUR WORKSHOP IDEAS ARE ON THE RESOURCES TAB ON OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT WEBSITE SO THE PUBLIC CAN SEE WHAT WE'RE PLANNING AS FAR AS OUR WORKSHOPS GO. ENROLLMENT IS LOOKING IS LOOKING GOOD AS PROJECTED. AS OF SEPTEMBER 15TH WE WERE SITTING AT 7,089 STUDENTS, 4,154 IN SECONDARY, 2,935 ELEMENTARY, WITH 149 STUDENTS IN OUR CONNECTIONS ACADEMY. WE'RE REALLY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT WHAT OUR STATE COUNT IS GOING TO BE IN OCTOBER. I KNOW OUR BUSINESS SERVICES DIRECTOR IS BACK THERE, EXCITED AS WELL, SO THINGS ARE LOOKING GOOD. WE'RE EXCITED TO HAVE SO MANY KIDS BACK IN THE BUILDING, BUT WE WANT TO SEE THEM ALL. WE KNOW THAT CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS, AND SO WE WANT OUR KIDS BACK IN THE BUILDING SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT WHERE WE'RE AT. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT OUR ACTUAL HEADCOUNT IS LIKELY HIGHER THAN THIS BECAUSE WE'VE HAD ANOTHER TWO WEEKS PAST. BUT WE'LL GET SOME HARD COUNTS TO THE BOARD IN OCTOBER ONCE THERE'S MORE OFFICIAL. QUICKLY OUR COVID UPDATE. I'VE BEEN MEETING FREQUENTLY WITH DR. MELNICK AND HIS TEAM AND THE AREA SUPERINTENDENTS FROM AROUND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND DR. MELNICK WILL SAY THAT COVID CASES ARE DECREASING BUT THEY'RE NOT PLUMMETING. WE WANTED TO JUST MAKE SURE THAT THE PUBLIC UNDERSTANDS THAT. THERE'S STILL A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE DEALING WITH COVID, WHETHER IT'S THE VIRUS ITSELF OR JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, THE FINANCIAL REPERCUSSIONS, SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT COME ALONG WITH DEALING WITH THE PANDEMIC. WE KNOW WE'RE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET, BUT WE'RE GETTING THERE AND SO WE'RE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT WHERE WE'RE GOING. OUR COUNTY HEALTH OFFICIALS, OFFICIALS DID STATE THAT VACCINATIONS ARE STILL AVAILABLE, ACCESSIBLE FOR 5-11 YEARS OLD. HE DID WANT THE PARENTS TO KNOW THAT. RIGHT NOW CASES IN CLARK COUNTY, JUST UNDER 70 CASES FOR EVERY 100,000 RESIDENTS. THAT'S A GOOD NUMBER. CASES IN WASHINGTON STATE ARE JUST ABOVE 82, ALMOST 83 FOR 100,000 PEOPLE. WE'RE DOING RATHER WELL COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE STATE. HOSPITALIZATIONS ARE ALSO DOWN IN CLARK COUNTY. CURRENTLY THERE AT 6.4 FOR EVERY 100,000 PEOPLE, WHICH IS DOWN 10 PERCENT. WASHINGTON STATE IS A LITTLE BIT LOWER THAN CLARK COUNTY AT 5.1 FOR 100,000 CASES RESIDENTS. THEN JUST A NOTE HERE THAT ON OCTOBER 31ST, STATE EMPLOYEES VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATION WORKERS WILL BE LIFTED. STILL RECOMMENDED, BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE VACCINATED IN ORDER TO VOLUNTEER OR COACH OR TEACH OR WORK IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. QUESTIONS ON EITHER OF THOSE LAST COUPLE OF SLIDES? >> I WOULD LOVE TO SAY NOT ONLY AS A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER, BUT AS A PARENT OF A CHILD IN HIGH SCHOOL AND AT CAMAS CONNECT, THE FLEXIBILITY THAT WE'RE GIVING STUDENTS. I WAS TALKING WITH SOME TEAMMATES TODAY FROM TENNESSEE AND OKLAHOMA AND WHEN I WAS SHARING WITH THEM THE OPTIONS THAT WE HAVE IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, THEY WERE BLOWN AWAY. I WANT TO THANK THE ADMINISTRATORS AND THE COUNSELORS FOR MAKING THAT FLEXIBILITY REALLY WORK FOR EVERY STUDENT. THAT WE SEE EVERY STUDENT AND WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE. WE REALLY WANT KIDS WHERE THEY CAN BE MOST SUCCESSFUL. IT WAS JUST SO HEARTWARMING TO HEAR FROM OUT-OF-STATERS WHO JUST CAN'T BELIEVE THAT WE OFFER ALL OF THOSE OPTIONS TO OUR STUDENTS. THANK YOU. >> THAT'S GREAT TO KNOW. GAIL I TOTALLY LEFT YOU HANGING THERE. I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO THIS. I'M SO BAD AT THAT. THANK YOU, ERICA. I 100 PERCENT AGREE. I KNOW THE BOARD WANTED SOME REVIEW ON SENIOR PROJECTS, [00:30:09] SO WE WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT MARYLYN AND SOME OF HER TEAM HAVE MET WITH OUR SECONDARY PRINCIPALS AND IT WAS WONDERFUL TO GET THEM TOGETHER TO REALLY TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE SPECIFICS AROUND SENIOR PROJECTS. ALTHOUGH THIS IS NEW TO ME, IT WAS REALLY GREAT FOR ME TO LISTEN IN AND HEAR SOME OF THOSE COMMENTS. THERE WAS THREE MAIN DISCUSSION POINTS AROUND SENIOR PROJECTS AT THE DIRECTION OF THE BOARD. ONE WAS AROUND PROFESSIONAL DRESS, AND THERE WAS SOME CONCESSIONS GIVEN SO THAT THERE CAN BE MORE CONSISTENCY IN THOSE PROJECTS. SO ULTIMATELY, IMAGES OF FORMAL INTERVIEW ATTIRE HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED AND WILL BE INTRODUCED TO THE STUDENTS AND SHARED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR AS THEY PREPARE. PANEL MEMBERS WILL BE ASKED TO REDUCE THE SUBJECTIVITY WHEN IT COMES TO THAT DRESS. EACH HIGH SCHOOL WILL ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT HAS ACCESS TO COMPLETE OUTFITS AND THEY WILL GET TO KEEP FOR FUTURE INTERVIEWS, INCLUDING SHOES AND OTHER ACCESSORIES. THAT WAS 100 PERCENT AGREED UPON BY OUR PRINCIPALS. THERE WILL BE SOME GRACE GIVEN THERE, BUT ANYBODY WHO NEEDS IT WILL BE AFFORDED THAT. SUMMER START, WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT STUDENTS START EARLY, AND WHILE STARTING THEIR PROJECT THE SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR IS NOT ENCOURAGED, IT IS AN OPTION FOR STUDENTS WITH UNIQUE TIME-BOUND OPPORTUNITIES PRIOR TO SCHOOL STARTING. STUDENTS ARE INFORMED WITH THIS OPTION AND ARE PROVIDED INFORMATION AND SUPPORT WITH REQUIRED PAPERWORK. AGAIN, I'M REALLY GLAD THAT THE BOARD BROUGHT THAT TO THE PRINCIPAL'S ATTENTION AND SO THEY'RE WORKING AROUND THAT ISSUE. >> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION CONCERNING THE LAST POINT. >> YES. >> IS THAT A CHANGE IN THEIR BEING ABLE TO DO IT IN THE SUMMER BECAUSE I KNOW THEY COULD WITH A SPECIAL PERMISSION AND TIME-BOUND, BUT IS IT OPEN TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO START OR IT HAS TO FIT A CERTAIN CATEGORY? >> I DON'T SEE MARYLYN HERE. DAN, DO YOU HAVE AN ANSWER TO THAT? WERE YOU ON THAT CONVERSATION? THEY MEAN TO PUT YOU ON THE SPOT, BUT I CAN GET BACK TO YOU, CONNIE, UNLESS DAN, DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS ON THAT? THANKS, DAN. THE LAST ITEM OF DISCUSSION WAS THE TIME FACTOR, THE TIMING. AND WHAT THE PRINCIPAL'S AGREED ON WAS THAT ONLY STAFF FACILITATORS WILL MEASURE TIME. NOBODY ON THE JUDGING PANEL WILL DO THAT. IT'LL BE OFF TO THE SIDE, WHICH WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE ASSESSMENT RUBRIC. STUDENTS WHO ARE OVER OR UNDER TIME ARE PROVIDED MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO RE-DO THEIR PRESENTATION. TO NOTE, ONLY THREE STUDENTS IN THE PAST HAVE HAD TO RE-DO THEIR PRESENTATION FOR BEING OVER UNDER TIME. DAN, I KNOW YOU WERE CONCERNED ABOUT THIS. NOT ONE STUDENT HAS FAILED BECAUSE OF THE TIME ALLOTMENT. QUESTIONS ON THAT? OKAY. STATE ASSESSMENT RESULTS. WE HAVE SOME RESULTS FOR YOU TONIGHT AND LISA HAS BEEN GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO BE HERE TO ASSIST WITH THIS. I DO WANT TO SAY JUST FOR THE RECORD THAT THE CAMAS STUDENTS ARE AMAZING. I KNOW I'M NOT TELLING YOU ANYTHING YOU DON'T KNOW. BUT EVEN THROUGH A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, OUR STUDENTS CAME THROUGH AND YOU'LL SEE THAT IN A COUPLE OF SLIDES FROM NOW, ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE WASHINGTON STATE. BEING NEW HERE, I WAS JUST SO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED, AND I KNOW TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS ARE A SNAPSHOT AND IT'S JUST A SMALL PIECE OF THE BIGGER PUZZLE. BUT REALLY KUDOS TO OUR KIDS, THEIR TEACHERS, THE STAFF, AND THEIR PARENTS FOR THAT SUPPORT. BECAUSE TO SEE THAT OUR DISTRICT DID NOT PLUMMET LIKE MANY DID AROUND THE COUNTRY IS REALLY IMPRESSIVE TO SEE. WITH THAT, I'LL PASS IT OFF TO LISA FOR A LITTLE BIT MORE DETAIL. >> WE THOUGHT WE'D START BECAUSE STATE ASSESSMENT HAS CHANGED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS THROUGH THE PANDEMIC. JUST AS THAT REMINDER ABOUT, WHAT IS IT THAT WE ASSESS AND WHEN DO WE ASSESS IT? NORMALLY IN THE SPRING, WE WOULD ASSESS STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-8 AND 10 IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND IN MATH THROUGH WHAT'S CALLED THE SMARTER BALANCED, OR AFFECTIONATELY THE ACRONYM SBA. STUDENTS IN GRADES 5, 8, AND 11 ARE ASSESSED IN SCIENCE THROUGH [00:35:03] THE WASHINGTON COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT OF SCIENCE, OR WCAS, FOR SHORT, AND THEN STUDENTS IN THE GRADE LEVELS ABOVE WHO HAVE SIGNIFICANT COGNITIVE DISABILITIES ARE TESTED IN THE SAME CONTENT AREAS USING WHAT'S CALLED THE WA-AIM ASSESSMENT. DURING THE PANDEMIC, STUDENTS IN WASHINGTON STATE DID NOT TAKE STATE ASSESSMENTS DURING THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. THEN STUDENTS WERE NEXT ASSESSED IN THE FALL OF 2021 BASED ON THEIR GRADE LEVEL IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR. YOU REMEMBER THAT? THAT WAS JUST LAST YEAR, ABOUT A YEAR AGO. A FOURTH GRADER WAS ESSENTIALLY TAKING THE THIRD GRADE END-OF-YEAR ASSESSMENT. IT WASN'T ABBREVIATED FORM OF THE ASSESSMENTS, SO SHORTER THAN USUAL. THEN STUDENTS WERE ASSESSED AGAIN IN THE SPRING OF 2022. LAST YEAR, BOTH IN THE FALL AND IN THE SPRING, USING A FORM OF THE STATE ASSESSMENT THAT WAS SHORTER THAN THE BLUEPRINT THAT WAS USED IN THE PRE-PANDEMIC, BUT LONGER THAN THE ONE THAT WAS USED IN THE FALL. THROUGH ALL THIS, THEY'RE EXPERIMENTING WITH THE BLUEPRINT OF THE ASSESSMENT TO COME UP WITH THE IDEAL AMOUNT OF TIME THAT GIVES US THE BEST INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE STUDENTS ARE AND WHAT THEY MIGHT NEED NEXT. THE BLUEPRINT FORM THAT WAS USED IN 2022, LAST SPRING, IS THE SAME ONE THAT WILL BE USED IN THE UPCOMING SPRINGS AS WELL, FOR SMARTER BALANCED. THE SCIENCE ASSESSMENT FOLLOWS THE SAME BLUEPRINT THAT WAS USED PRE-PANDEMIC. ON SEPTEMBER 9TH, SUPERINTENDENT REYKDAL ISSUED A PUBLIC NEWS RELEASE AND THE TITLE OF THAT WAS, STATE TEST SCORES A PROMISING SIGNAL OF PANDEMIC RECOVERY. IN IT, HE TALKED ABOUT THE ASSESSMENT SCORES FROM A STATE-LEVEL. BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HE MENTIONED, AND I'LL JUST QUOTE HIM HERE, "THESE DATA ARE ENCOURAGING", SAID SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, CHRIS REYKDAL, "THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT COVID-19 SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. THE DISRUPTIONS OF REMOTE LEARNING, QUARANTINE, AND ISOLATION AND TRANSITIONING BACK IN PERSON AFTER PERIODS OF LEARNING REMOTELY ARE EVIDENT IN THE DECREASE IN PROFICIENCY FROM SPRING 2019 TO SPRING 2022. HOWEVER, THE INCREDIBLE WORK OF OUR EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IS EVIDENCED IN THE RECOVERY WE ARE SEEING ACROSS GRADE LEVELS IN SUBJECTS." I USE THAT AS THE CONTEXT FOR THE NEXT DATA SCREENS THAT WILL SHOW YOU. THIS FIRST DISPLAY IS CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT PERCENT PROFICIENT. AND WHAT YOU SEE IS THE BLUE BAR WHICH REPRESENTS ASSESSMENT SCORES FROM THE SPRING OF 2019, WHAT WE WOULD SAY WAS PRE-PANDEMIC. THE ORANGE BAR IS FALL OF 2021 RESULTS AND THE GRAY BAR IS SPRING OF 2022 RESULTS. WHAT YOU SEE IN THE CASE OF BOTH ELA AND MATH IS THAT BECAUSE OF UNFINISHED LEARNING, WE SAW A DECREASE ACROSS BOTH ELA AND MATH FROM THE SPRING OF 2019 TO THE FALL OF 2021. BUT WHAT YOU SEE IN THE SPRING OF 2022 IS THAT WE HAVE STARTED TO ENGAGE IN THAT ACCELERATION OR RECOVERY OF UNFINISHED LEARNING AS WE GO FORWARD. IN SCIENCE, THIS IS THE ONE PLACE WHERE WE DIDN'T MATCH THE STATE'S TREND WHICH WE'LL TALK ABOUT IN JUST A MOMENT. BUT WHAT YOU SEE IS THAT WE ACTUALLY HAD AN INCREASE FROM SPRING OF 2019 TO FALL OF 2021, AND THEN A SLIGHT DECREASE TO SPRING OF 2022, BUT STILL HIGHER THAN WAS ACHIEVED IN THE SPRING OF 2019. THESE TWO GRAPHS SHOW CSD RESULTS ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE WITH THE STATE'S RESULTS ON THE RIGHT. THE BARS ARE POSITIONED IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOU CAN COMPARE THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT RESULTS TO THE STATE RESULTS. FOR EXAMPLE, YOU SEE AN ELA, THE BLUE BAR SPRING 2019 FOR CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS ABOUT 80 PERCENT. YOU SEE THAT THE STATES FOR THAT SAME WINDOW IS ABOUT 60 PERCENT. SO THERE'S A DIFFERENCE IN ACHIEVEMENT WITHIN THE STUDENTS IN CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE STATE RESULTS FOR BOTH ELA AND MATH, THEY FOLLOW THE SAME PATTERN, THOUGH OUR RESULTS AGAIN ARE INCREASED IN TERMS OF THE PERCENT OF STUDENTS DEMONSTRATING PROFICIENCY. THE STATE FOR SCIENCE ACTUALLY SHOWS A DECREASE ACROSS ALL THREE OF THOSE WINDOWS WHERE WE SHOWED AN INCREASE AND THEN A SLIGHT DECREASE BUT STILL ABOVE. [00:40:05] GENERALLY FOLLOWING THE STATE'S TRENDS AS WE GO. THE OTHER WAY THAT WE LOOK AT THIS DATA IS TO LOOK AT THE GROUPS OF STUDENTS SERVE THROUGH DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND ALSO BY DEMOGRAPHIC IDENTITY MARKERS SUCH AS RACE AND ETHNICITY, GENDER, AND SO ON. I HAVE JUST A FEW SLIDES TO SHOW YOU KNOWING THAT THESE ARE JUST SOME THAT WE LOOK AT. THERE ARE MANY MORE THAT OUR TEAMS ARE LOOKING AT TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT WHERE ARE WE HAVE STUDENT GROUPS THAT WE NEED TO ATTEND TO IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THEIR LEARNING IN A DIFFERENT AND BETTER WAY. IN OUR CONTINUED FOCUS ON EQUITY, WHAT YOU SEE HERE IS SCIENCE, THEN ELA AND MATH, AND WHAT YOU SEE IS PROGRAM MARKERS. STUDENTS WHO ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS AND THEN THE COMPARATOR GROUP IS STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS. WHEN YOU LOOK AT SCIENCE, 30 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS MET PROFICIENCY IN SCIENCE FOR THE SPRING 2022 WINDOW. WHEREAS 70.5 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT SERVED THROUGH THE NOW MULTILINGUAL PROGRAM ACHIEVED PROFICIENCY IN THAT SAME. YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE SOME DIFFERENCES IN THE ACHIEVEMENT BASED ON PROGRAM SERVICE GROUPS. AGAIN, OUR CONTENTION AND BELIEF IS THAT WE CAN ELIMINATE THOSE ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY GAPS BY FOCUSING VERY SPECIFICALLY ON WHAT EACH STUDENT NEEDS IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO LEARN AND SUCCEED IN THEIR GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS. I ALWAYS GO TO THE DEFINITION THAT ELENA AGUILAR TALKS ABOUT WHEN SHE TALKS ABOUT EQUITY, WHICH IS THAT EVERY STUDENT, EACH STUDENT GETS WHAT THEY NEED IN ORDER TO SUCCEED. THAT REALLY IS OUR FOCUS, IS UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT IS THAT WE HAVE CURRENTLY AND WHAT IT IS THAT WE NEED IN ORDER TO BETTER SERVE EACH OF OUR STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF THE PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT THEM IN SCHOOLS. THIS IS ANOTHER SLIDE THAT SHOWS THE SAME DATA, ELA, MATH, AND SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT BY RACE AND ETHNICITY. AGAIN, EXAMINING THIS FOR WHERE ARE WE ABLE TO MEET STUDENT NEEDS AND WHERE HAVE WE NOT YET BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT? HOW DO WE EXAMINE OUR PRACTICES AND STRUCTURES IN ORDER TO DO SO BETTER? ONE OF THE THINGS WITH THE STATE ASSESSMENT, AS YOU KNOW, IS THAT IT'S BEEN CALLED IN THE PAST, A HIGH-STAKES ASSESSMENT LIKE IT'S ONE MEASURE OF WHAT IT IS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING AND HOW THEY'RE PERFORMING ACCORDING TO GRADE-LEVEL STANDARDS. ONE OF THE CAUTIONS THAT'S ALWAYS GIVEN WITH STATE ASSESSMENTS IS THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AT MULTIPLE MEASURES IN ORDER TO FULLY UNDERSTAND WHERE STUDENTS ARE SUCCEEDING AND WHERE WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO ADDRESS THEIR NEEDS IN A BETTER WAY. SOME OF THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING THIS YEAR AS WE CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON RECOVERY AND ALSO ACCELERATION, WHICH AGAIN DOES NOT MEAN FASTER, IT MEANS A VERY FOCUSED LOOK AT WHAT ARE THE PRIORITY STANDARDS IN EACH OF OUR CONTENT TO AREAS IN ORDER TO FOCUS PRECISELY ON THOSE, IN ORDER TO AGAIN HELP STUDENTS BE SUCCESSFUL. SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING NOW IS THAT FOCUS ON PRIORITY STANDARDS. ALSO REALLY DIGGING MORE INTO OUR INTERIM AND BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT TELL US ALONG THE WAY IF STUDENTS ARE GROWING IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY WILL MEET GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS. EXAMPLES OF THAT WOULD BE DIBBLES, M-CLASS, AMPLIFY, ALL THE SAME THING AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL FOR LITERACY AND ALSO I-READY AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL FOR READING AND MATH. REALLY LEVERAGING WHAT IS IT THAT THOSE ASSESSMENTS TELL US ABOUT CHANGES WE CAN MAKE NOW IN ORDER TO BETTER SERVE OUR STUDENTS. THEN FINALLY, YOU KNOW THAT ONE OF THE PEOPLE WE HIRED RECENTLY, SHEREE GOMEZ CLARK, IS FOCUSING ON MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS, MTSS FOR SHORT, AGAIN, BECAUSE WE DO LOVE ACRONYMS AND MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS BASICALLY TELL US THAT MOST STUDENTS LEARNING NEEDS SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE SERVED IN WHAT'S CALLED TIER 1 OR CORE CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. THEN WE BUILD TIER 2 AND TIER 3 INTERVENTIONS THAT ARE THOSE ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED MORE OR DIFFERENT. AGAIN, THE INTENTION IS THAT THE SYSTEM WORKS TOGETHER IN SUCH A WAY THAT WE'RE ABLE TO MEET STUDENTS' NEEDS BETTER. THOSE ARE SOME OF THE ACTION ITEMS THAT WE'RE FOCUSED ON THIS YEAR IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO ADDRESS NOT ONLY WHAT LEARNING STUDENTS MISSED, BUT ALSO OUR CONTINUING GOAL TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERY STUDENT SUCCEEDS AND MEETS [00:45:02] GRADE LEVEL PROFICIENCY AND GRADUATES AS A SUCCESSFUL GRADUATE OF OUR SYSTEM. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU, LISA. JUST TO PIGGYBACK REALLY QUICKLY ON THAT PIECE. WE KNOW THE JOB OF THE CLASSROOM TEACHER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR OUR STUDENT'S EDUCATION, BUT WE ALSO KNOW HOW DIFFICULT THAT JOB IS. OUR TEAM FROM THE CABINET LEVEL TO OUR COORDINATORS, WE WANT TO BE THAT SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR THOSE OUTLIER STUDENTS WHERE WE'RE SEEING THOSE ACCESS GAPS. WE UNDERSTAND THE TEACHERS HAVE A VERY CHALLENGING JOB TO DO SO. WE'RE TAKING ON A LOT OF THE BRUNT OF THE WORK AND LOOKING AT I-READY RESULTS, LOOKING AT DEVILS RESULTS. I KNOW LISA, WE HAVE THESE CONVERSATIONS ALMOST EVERY DAY. WE KNOW WE HAVE A JOB TO DO, BUT WE KNOW IT'S NOT INSURMOUNTABLE AND WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT. IT'S JUST RIGHT NOW GOING THROUGH THAT DISCOVERY PERIOD OF WHO ARE THOSE STUDENTS? WHERE ARE THEY SITTING? AND HOW COULD WE SUPPORT THE TEACHER? IT'S NOT ALL ON THE CLASSROOM TEACHER AND/OR THE PRINCIPALS AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS. WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THIS WORK. THANK YOU, LISA. THAT'S GREAT. >> ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR JOHN ABOUT THE REPORT? I JUST WANT TO SAY [NOISE] I APPRECIATE THAT YOUR REPORT YOU'RE LOOPING BACK TO SO MANY OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT AT RECENT WORKSHOPS AND WHATNOT. I APPRECIATE THE FOLLOW-UP AND I'M SURE OUR PUBLIC APPRECIATES THAT THESE AREN'T ONE-AND-DONE THINGS THAT WE KEEP FOLLOWING UP ON THAT. THANK YOU. >> NOW, THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO US. THANK YOU. >> NEXT REPORT WE HAVE IS OUR MONTHLY BUDGET REPORT FROM JASEN MCEATHRON. >> THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING. THIS IS A PRELIMINARY REPORT, SO I GOT TO DO MY DISCLAIMER THAT I PROMISED TO MY STAFF. BECAUSE YOU'RE GIVEN THE SCHOOL BOARD A BRIEFING ON YEAR-END AND WE'RE NOT DONE YET, THOUGH I PROMISED TO MAKE SURE AND MAKE THAT CLEAR. THIS IS VERY PRELIMINARY. THAT SAID, THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT WE CAN REASONABLY PREDICT SO TRYING TO GIVE YOU A WINDOW INTO WHERE WE'LL END THE YEAR. THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT IS THE BUDGET IMPLICATIONS GOING INTO THE NEXT YEAR. THIS TIME OF YEAR, WE'RE LOOKING AT TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. HOW CLOSE WERE WE ON OUR YEAR-END FORECAST FOR LAST YEAR AND ENROLLMENT? AS JOHN MENTIONED, WE LOOK GOOD ON THE ENROLLMENT FRONT CLOSE TO OUR FORECASTS, SO A BIG THANKS TO ERIC HOVEY AND THE DEMOGRAPHER THAT WE ENGAGED. WE GOT ONE LAST STUDY OUT OF HIM BEFORE HE RETIRED AND MOVED TO TEXAS. I'M REALLY GLAD THAT WE WERE ABLE TO DO THAT IN A HUGE RELIEF BECAUSE THAT FORECAST IS USED FOR MULTIPLE PURPOSES, CAPITAL PLANNING, AS WELL AS OPERATIONAL PURPOSES. LOOKING AT WHERE OUR YEAR-END IS HEADING, IT'S PRETTY CLOSE. IT'S WITHIN PROBABLY ABOUT 600,000 RIGHT NOW OF WHERE WE HAD ANTICIPATED OUR ENDING FUND BALANCE TO BE. ON A PERCENTAGE BASIS THAT'S JUST FAIRLY SMALL. TENTHS UP OR DOWN, OR ACTUALLY UP A LITTLE BIT. THAT'S GOOD. WE'LL SEE AGAIN, WE'VE GOT A LITTLE BIT OF A ROAD AHEAD OF US. LOOKING BACK AT THE YEAR THOUGH, IT'S REALLY INTERESTING BECAUSE YOU START TO LOOK AT BUDGET VERSUS ACTUAL. IF YOU RECALL, WE HAD STRUCTURED A BUDGET THAT WAS OPTIMISTIC, I WOULD SAY IN OUR ENROLLMENT AND LAST YEAR WE DIDN'T ACHIEVE THAT. BUT WHAT WE SAW WAS THIS ONE-TIME MONEY COMING IN FROM THE STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THAT HELPED TO FILL THAT GAP. OVERALL, OUR REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES FOR THE YEAR ARE PRETTY CLOSE. THAT'S GOOD. THAT ALLOWS US TO CARRY THAT AND UTILIZE THAT FUND BALANCE THIS YEAR, WHICH WE HAD BUILT INTO OUR BUDGET. LOOKING AT OBVIOUSLY THE DEBT OBLIGATIONS WE PAID ALL OF OUR DEBT PAYMENTS SO THAT'S IMPORTANT. ON THE CAPITAL PROJECTS SIDE, CERTAINLY, THE ACTIVITY IS LESS THAN IN YEARS PAST, [00:50:01] BUT PRETTY NOTABLE PROJECTS. OBVIOUSLY THE THEATER WE'RE GLAD TO HAVE THAT PROJECT WRAPPED UP, AS WELL AS THE PRUNE HILL ROOF REPLACEMENT. THE MAJORITY OF THAT WORK REALLY WAS ABOUT ROUGHLY HALF OF IT WAS DURING THE SUMMER. IMPORTANT INVESTMENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR BUILDING. TRANSPORTATION VEHICLE AND ASP FUND PRETTY NORMAL ACTIVITY, NOTHING MAJOR TO REPORT THERE. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL I HAVE. THERE'S A COUPLE OTHER SLIDES. AGAIN, PRELIMINARY, NICE RED FONT, I WANT TO MAKE SURE. BUT THIS SHOWCASES MORE IN GRAPHICAL FORM THAT WERE REALLY PRETTY CLOSE ON THE REVENUES AND EXPENSES. THIS IS PRETTY TYPICAL. ACTUALLY, YOU LOOK HISTORICALLY PREVIOUS TO MCCLEARY, PREVIOUS TO COVID. THIS IS ABOUT WHERE WE TYPICALLY LAND AT THE END OF THE YEAR. WE'RE VERY CLOSE REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE-WISE. ANY QUESTIONS?CONNIE. >> JUST TO MAKE SURE I UNDERSTAND. THERE WERE TIMES LAST YEAR WHEN WE WERE PREDICTED TO USE UP TO SIX MILLION OF OUR FUND BALANCE TO BALANCE THE BUDGET. YOU'RE SAYING THAT THE ONE-TIME FUNDING CAME IN AND WE DIDN'T HAVE TO USE THAT EXTRA MONEY FROM OUR FUND BALANCE, SO WE STILL HAVE THAT? >> THAT'S CORRECT. GOING IN, WE WERE THINKING WE MIGHT [OVERLAPPING] LEVERAGE QUITE A BIT OF OUR FUND BALANCE. BUT IF YOU RECALL, WE GOT ABOUT JUST SHY OF 10 MILLION IN ONE-TIME REVENUES OVER THESE PAST FEW YEARS THAT REALLY CAME IN THE FORM OF COVID RELIEF FUND, GRANTS. WE TALKED ABOUT SSRS IN THERE AS WELL AS STABILIZATION FUNDS. THAT'S REALLY WHAT HELPS FILL THAT GAP. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? >> JUST REAL QUICK ON THE BOND. I THINK IT WAS LAST MEETING WE DID FINAL ACCEPTANCE ON GARBER. DO WE STILL HAVE ANY PROJECTS OPEN ON THE BOND OR WE CLOSE THAT OUT? >> THAT'S IT. >> THAT'S IT, OKAY. >> THAT WAS THE LAST ONE OVER THERE. >> JUST MY COMPLIMENTS, JASON, I SEE THE MONTH-OVER-MONTH COMPARISON OF ACTUAL TO PROJECTED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT CRYSTAL BALL YOU'RE USING, BUT YOUR MONTH-TO-MONTH IS INCREDIBLY ACCURATE BECAUSE AT THAT LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE RELATED TO THE FINANCIAL HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITY DISTRICT IS IMPORTANT TO HOW WE'RE DOING BUSINESS SO APPRECIATE THAT ACCURACY AND I APPRECIATE BEING ABLE TO SEE IT NOW IN A GRAPHICAL FORM. THIS STILL FEELS RELATIVELY NEW AND I APPRECIATE TO SEE THIS ONE. >> YOU'RE WELCOME. I'LL PASS THAT ON TO OUR BUDGET WIZARD, MATT CAMPBELL. HE'S BEEN AWESOME AT THAT. >> DOUG, IF I CAN JUST ADD TO THAT, WHAT I'VE NOTICED COMING HERE AND LOOKING CLOSELY AT THE BUDGET IS JASON AND HIS TEAM HAVE A VERY SOUND UNDERSTANDING OF KEEPING THE FUNDS AS CLOSE TO THE STUDENT AS POSSIBLE. IT'S VERY REFRESHING TO SEE. THERE'S JUST NOT A LOT OF THE SPENDING IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY IS IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THE STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL SITES. THOSE ARE VERY HARD THINGS TO ARGUE. JUST COMPLIMENTS TO JASON FOR THAT UNDERSTANDING AND YOUR TEAM OF THE CLOSER THE MONEY IS TO THE KID, THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. THANK YOU, JASON. >> THANK YOU. >> THANKS, JASON. ANYTHING ELSE FOR HIM? OKAY. >> GREAT. NINE C ON OUR AGENDA IS OUR SUMMER SCHOOL REPORT FROM DR. HOLD. >> I MEAN UP HERE. >> IS THIS GOING TO PICK ME UP OR DO I HAVE TO [INAUDIBLE]. GOOD EVENING. >> [LAUGHTER]. >> THANKS FOR HAVING ME BACK. I APPRECIATE IT. JUST WANTED TO TAKE SOME TIMES THAT GATHER SOME FEEDBACK AND BRING BACK SOME PICTURES AND THEN TOOK A WHILE TO PUT ALL THAT TOGETHER. I HAVE A COUPLE OF MY SUMMER SCHOOL TEAM MEMBERS HERE THAT ARE GOING TO TALK MOSTLY ABOUT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. I THINK MY ELEMENTARY COORDINATOR IS OFF COORDINATING SOME SOCCER RIGHT NOW. ALSO, I JUST WANTED TO BRING IN A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME OF THE BUDGET AND HOW WE WERE ABLE TO FUND SUMMER SCHOOL. PART OF SUMMER SCHOOL IS THAT RECOVERY EFFORT FROM COVID. JUST A QUICK REMINDER, WE WERE ABLE TO SERVE 500 KIDS OVER THE COURSE OF THIS SUMMER, AND SO 120 ELEMENTARY, ABOUT 40 MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND THEN 330 HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS. [00:55:02] WE WERE ABLE TO SERVE A LOT OF STUDENTS. WE DO HAVE ONE MORE YEAR OF THE GRANT, BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET THROUGH HOSPI, SO WE HAVE ANOTHER YEAR OF FULL SUMMER SCHOOL. I WANTED TO WALK THROUGH [NOISE] SOME OF THAT WITH YOU AND THEN GO OVER SOME OF THE UPDATES. THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR THAT I'VE BEEN REALLY INVOLVED WITH SUMMER SCHOOL. IT'S CERTAINLY AN AMAZING TEAM TO WORK WITH. WE HAD A LOT OF TEACHERS, PEOPLE FROM ALL THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS INVOLVED. TRANSPORTATION OF FOOD, AND SO IT WAS A TEAM EFFORT TO GET ALL THESE KIDS GOING. IT WAS A FOUR-WEEK PROGRAM, JUST AS A REMINDER, IN HIGH SCHOOL, HAD AN EXTRA WEEK TO FINISH SOME OTHER REMOTE CLASSES. WHAT I THINK IS REALLY IMPORTANT IS AS WE CONTINUE THIS PROGRAM, THE VALUE OF FEEDBACK. I THINK THAT'S ESSENTIAL IN SCHOOLS AS OUR MISSION IS TO SEE AND SERVE. WE CAN'T SEE AND SERVE UNLESS WE'RE LISTENING. AS A RESULT FROM LISTENING TO LAST YEAR, WE SHIFTED FROM A SIX-WEEK PROGRAM TO FOUR-WEEK PROGRAM AND SO A LOT OF THAT WAS THE MEAT THE STUDENT AND THE STAFF NEEDS. WE'RE ABLE TO GET A FEW MORE STUDENTS IN BECAUSE IT WAS A BIT OF A SHORTER PROGRAM [NOISE]. SORRY, I HAD A COLD. ANYWAY. WE ALSO ALIGN THE START AND END TIMES TO MAKE IT MORE FEASIBLE FOR FAMILIES THAT HAVE MULTIPLE STUDENTS. ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH ALL STARTED AT THE SAME TIME. THEN WE ADDED IN ORIGINAL CREDIT PE AND HEALTH. WE ACTUALLY HAD 100 STUDENTS DO ORIGINAL CREDIT THIS YEAR WHICH I THINK WAS A REALLY GOOD ADDITION AND ALLOWED SOME SCHEDULING FLEXIBILITY. SOME OF THE MSE STUDENTS THAT MAGNET SCHOOL STUDENTS WANTED TO DO PE AND HEALTH DURING THE SUMMER. WE HAD THEM DO ONLINE COURSEWORK, BUT WE ALSO HAD THEM DO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY WERE OUT AND MOVING. WE CONTINUE TO USE EDGE ANNUITY FOR BOTH SUMMER SCHOOL AND FOR CCA, AND WE'VE BEEN REALLY PLEASED WITH THE DATA THAT WE'VE SEEN COMING OUT OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE WORKED THROUGH EDGE ANNUITY. THEN ALSO THE EQUITY COACHES WERE THE CORE OF OUR SUMMER SCHOOL TEAM AND SO OUR MIDDLE-SCHOOL EQUITY COACH IS GOING TO COME UP IN A BIT. THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB REALLY SUPPORTING THE TEACHERS, TRAINING THEM, AND JUST DIFFERENT PEDAGOGICAL THINGS. ESPECIALLY THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAM REALLY FOCUSED ON STUDENTS' SUCCESS AND AGENCY. DID A GREAT JOB AND THEN AN ELEMENTARY LITERACY FOCUS. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT AS I LISTENED TO THE TEACHERS, I THINK THE THING THAT WE KNOW TO BE TRUE IS THAT WE REALLY NEED TO WORK ON OUR IDENTIFICATION PROCESS EARLIER. BUT ANOTHER ACRONYM HERE, BUT WE TRIED TO USE THE END-OF-THE-YEAR ASSESSMENT TO TRY AND GET THE BEST PICTURE OF THE STUDENTS WHO WOULD HAVE THE MOST NEED. BUT THEN WHAT HAPPENED WAS THAT ENDED IN MAY AND THEN TO IDENTIFY THE 300 OR SO KIDS, IT WAS JUST A LOT OF WORK TO COORDINATE ALL THOSE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS, GET ALL THE NAMES TO EVERYBODY. I THINK WE'RE GOING TO START THIS NEXT SUMMER SCHOOL WITH WORKING ON THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR ASSESSMENT, WHICH WILL GIVE US AN IDEA FROM FALL TO MIDDLE OF THE YEAR, AND WE'LL USE THAT MIDDLE OF THE YEAR DATA IN JANUARY TO START BUILDING OUR SUMMER SCHOOL ROSTERS SO THAT WE CAN GET EVERYBODY ON BOARD BECAUSE ESPECIALLY WITH TRANSPORTATION AND GOING AROUND TRYING TO PICK [NOISE] UP ALL THE KIDS, THAT WAS A LOT FOR THEM. WE'RE TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO HAVE ACCESS TO SKYWARD. BUT THE HARD PART ABOUT THAT IS THAT THEY COME FROM ALL THE SCHOOLS IN CANVAS. THEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER, THEY TURN OFF SKYWARD FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, AND IF YOU ROLL THE KIDS UP. IF YOU'RE 7TH GRADER, THAT'S WHEN THEY PUSH THOSE BUTTONS AND URINATE HERE. IT'S REALLY HARD TO GET THAT FIGURED OUT, BUT WE HAVE AN AMAZING TECHNOLOGY TEAM AND WE WILL WORK ON THAT. THEN I THINK THE OTHER THING IS THAT I FOCUS A LOT OF SUPPORT STAFF INTO THE CLASSROOM, WHICH IS SUPER IMPORTANT. BUT WE ALSO ENDED UP MEETING SOMEBODY TO ANSWER THE PHONE FOR ATTENDANCE AND THINGS LIKE THAT. I THINK THAT'S ONE THING I'LL DO NEXT SUMMER. THE OTHER THING I NOTICED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM IS TO HAVE DRESS CODE AND BATHROOM POLICIES ON DAY ONE. SUMMER SCHOOL CREW THAN WHAT WE HAD LAST YEAR, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO ADDRESS THE THINGS THAT CAME UP, BUT NEXT YEAR WE'LL START OFF WITH THAT IN [INAUDIBLE]. SO FROM A BUDGET STANDPOINT, THE PIECES THAT CAME TOGETHER TO MAKE SUMMER SCHOOL HAPPEN, WE HAD $140,000 GRANT FOR UNFINISHED LEARNING FROM THE STATE, AND WE DO HAVE ONE MORE YEAR OF THAT. WE ALSO HAD THE BARTON FAMILY GRANT THAT DIANNE [INAUDIBLE] WAS ABLE TO GET, AND SO THAT HELPED WITH SUPPLIES AND CURRICULUM. THEN ALSO JASON WAS GENEROUS WITH US AND GAVE US 40 OR 50,000 OUT OF THE GENERAL FUND TO JUST SHORE IT UP SO THAT WE COULD OFFER A FULL PROGRAM. [01:00:06] THE TOTAL COST FOR SUMMER SCHOOL THIS YEAR WAS AROUND 230,000. THE REASON THAT I'M GOING OVER THIS IS LONG-RANGE PLANNING WE HAVE ONE MORE YEAR WITH THE ALE GRANT, AND THEN AFTER THAT, WE DON'T HAVE ANY MORE OF THE UNFINISHED LEARNING OR THE SR FUNDS AS THEY'RE CALLED. BEYOND THAT, THE HIGH-SCHOOL A SUSTAINABLE BECAUSE WE DO COLLECT TUITION AND TUITION WE COLLECTED COVER THE COST FOR HIGH SCHOOL. BUT SINCE WE'RE WORKING WITH K3, 8 STUDENTS THAT NEED A BOOST BETWEEN SCHOOL YEARS, DON'T REALLY FEEL OUR GENE TUITION WOULD BE A GOOD SOLUTION THERE. SO THEN WHAT WE WOULD BE LOOKING AT IS WE ALREADY PUT IN 40,000 SOMEWHERE AROUND 130,000 TO OFFER CONTINUE OFF IN FULL SUMMER PROGRAM. SO AS YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT BUDGET, THAT'S JUST SOMETHING TO CONSIDER IF WE WANT TO CONTINUE HAVING THE FULL K3-12 BECAUSE I DO THINK THAT WE COULD MANAGE TO KEEP A NINE THROUGH 12 PROGRAMS GOING WITHOUT. ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT? IF I CAN JUST COMMENT REALLY QUICKLY ON THAT. THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AS A CABINET AS WELL. WE KNOW THAT'S GOING TO BE A NATIONAL ISSUE WITH PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY REALLY GETTING USED TO THIS SUMMER PROGRAMMING. I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE AN EXPECTATION IN YEARS TO COME THAT WE DO SOME OFFERINGS. AND ALSO IT'S A GREAT HELP WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THOSE LEARNING GAPS AND SUMMER REALLY HELPS TO TIGHTEN SOME OF THOSE UP FOR US. SO ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE GOING TO DO IS ASK OUR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO LOOK AT THAT AS A PROJECT, TO LOOK AT PROGRAMS STATEWIDE, NATIONWIDE, GLOBALLY ON WHAT WE'RE DOING, WHAT GRANTS ARE OUT THERE, WHAT PROGRAMS ARE OUT THERE SO THAT DOESN'T BREAK THE BANK, BUT YEAH WE CAN STILL HAVE SOME OFFERINGS. TO DAN'S POINT THAT MAYBE OUR TUITION BASED, BUT MAYBE SOME ARE NOT, OR MAYBE THERE'S A HYBRID MODEL OUT THERE BECAUSE WE KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE A BIG ASK FROM OUR COMMUNITY BUT I THINK IT'S THE RIGHT ASK IF WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. SO I'M REALLY GLAD TO KNOW THAT YOU THOUGHT AHEAD AT LEAST A YEAR. AND I KNOW ONCE THAT DRIES UP, WE'LL HAVE TO COME TO THE TABLE SO I JUST WANTED TO POINT THAT OUT. WE'RE TRYING TO GET AHEAD OF THIS, BUT IT'S NOT EASY. YEAH THAT'S ACTUALLY A GOOD THOUGHT IS WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM, WE CHARGE TUITION, BUT ANYBODY THAT ASKED FOR A SCHOLARSHIP, WE GAVE IT TO THEM, AND IN DOING THAT, WE'RE ABLE TO HAVE ENOUGH STAFF TO BASICALLY BE SELF-SUSTAINING. IF WE FIGURE OUT WHAT THE TUITION WOULD BE AND THAT SOME FAMILIES WOULD BE ABLE TO PAY IT, OTHERS WOULDN'T THAT WOULD LESSEN THE BURDEN TO THE [INAUDIBLE]. SO [INAUDIBLE] IS OFF DOING SOCCER COACH AND I THINK SHE'S NOT HERE, SO I'LL GIVE YOU THE ELEMENTARY UPDATE. SO OUR FOCUS WAS ON LITERACY AND SO WE USE THE SCIENCE OF READING CURRICULUM, AGAIN. JUST SOME PICTURES OF IF YOU'RE COMING IN OVER SUMMER, HOPEFULLY, YOU'RE HAVING A GREAT TIME. WE HAD STUDENTS THAT COME IN THAT WEREN'T REALLY COMFORTABLE READING OR REPORTED THAT THEY DIDN'T READ THAT MUCH, AND WHEN THEY LEFT SUMMER SCHOOL, THEY SAID THAT THEY ARE READING MORE, THEY WERE ENJOYING BOOKS MORE. THIS PARTICULAR STUDENT ON THE RIGHT WAS ALWAYS HAVING A BIT OF A TOUGH TIME, BUT BY THE END WAS SMILING AND ENGAGING IN THE WORK. THAT'S REALLY WHERE YOU START SEEING THE PURPOSE OR THE "WHY" BECAUSE WHEN YOU START SEEING THE STUDENTS MAKING THESE IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL GAINS THAT WILL HELP THEM IN THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR. THEN THE BOOK MOBIUS IS A BIG PART OF SUMMER SCHOOL AS WELL. I THINK IT'S EVERY WEDNESDAY THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER, SO THERE'S 10 OR 12 STOPS, AND THERE'S USUALLY 100 STUDENTS AT EACH STOP. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN LITERACY, AND WHAT I THINK IS REALLY SPECIAL IS THE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS WOULD SHOW UP AND DO COMMUNITY READING, WHICH WAS REALLY FUN. YOU'VE GOT A COUPLE OF THE PRINCIPALS THERE, AND JENN PUTS A LOT OF WORK AND THEN MAKING SURE THAT THIS HAPPENS, AND EVEN DR. JOHN SHOWED UP SO ONE OF THE READINGS AND DID SOME READING. IT'S A GREAT WAY AND WE HAD STUDENTS CHECKING OUT QUITE A FEW BOOKS. IT'S A NEAT LAYER OF SUMMER SCHOOL JUST TO CONTINUE TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN LITERACY. AND SO CELEBRATIONS HONESTLY JUST THE AMAZING STAFF WITHIN THE ELEMENTARY TEAM, SO WE HAD THREE EQUITY COACHES AND FIVE OTHER TEACHERS, AND THEN SIX PAIRS. SO WE ALMOST HAD A PAIR IN EVERY CLASSROOM. SO STUDENTS, WE TOOK PRE AND POST-ASSESSMENTS AND THE STUDENTS WERE SHOWING LITERACY GAINS, WHICH WAS THE WHOLE POINT. I'VE GOT A TWO-MINUTE VIDEO HERE OF MS. WOLF DOING A LESSON SO YOU CAN SEE. [01:05:03] FOR ME MOSTLY BEING A SECONDARY PERSON COMING IN, IT'S REALLY NEAT TO BE ABLE TO SEE HOW TO TEACH A STUDENT TO READ AND THAT'S BEEN MY PROFESSIONAL GOAL IS AT SOME POINT I'LL UNDERSTAND THAT MYSTERY. IT'S REALLY NEAT TO BE AROUND AMAZING TEACHERS LIKE MS. WOLF. I'LL SHOW YOU THAT VIDEO AND JUST THIS BACK-END. AGAIN, STUDENTS ARE REPORTING THAT THEY'RE ENJOYING READING A LOT MORE. WE ADJUSTED THE SCHEDULE QUITE A BIT. SO WE HAD WORKED AS A TEAM TO COME UP WITH A SCHEDULE, WE FELT LIKE THAT WENT REALLY WELL. MEALTIME AND RECESS ALSO WENT REALLY WELL, AND STAFF WORKED AS A TEAM. THEN THEY REALLY APPRECIATED HAVING ALL THAT PARA-PROFESSIONAL HELP BECAUSE THEY COULD WORK WITH STUDENTS ON SOME STRUCTURED LITERACY. THEN THE PARA-PROFESSIONALS COULD DO READING GROUPS. LET ME SHOW YOU THIS VIDEO AND I THINK IT'LL GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT THE SCIENCE OF READING CURRICULUM LOOKS LIKE AND THEY ALSO USE THIS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO GO IN AND SEE THAT READING MAGIC HAPPEN, THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. >> WE'RE GOING TO START WITH OUR LEARNING TARGET AND THE LEARNING TARGET SAYS; I CAN READ LETTER NAMES, LETTER SOUNDS, AND WORDS. >> I CAN READ LETTER NAMES, LETTER SOUNDS, AND WORDS. >> WE'RE GOING TO PRACTICE USING OUR COLOR CHARTS. THE COLOR RED TELLS US THAT WE ARE GOING TO SAY THE LETTER NAMES. THE COLOR ORANGE TELLS US WE ARE GOING TO STAY THE SOUNDS, THE WORDS IN GREEN, WE READ LIKE SNAP, THE WORDS IN BLUE WE SAY IT SOUNDS AND WE BLEND THEM TOGETHER AND THEN WE READ THE SENTENCE TOGETHER. SO WE WILL START WITH THE LETTER NAMES IN RED. OUR POINT WILL TELL ME THE LETTER NAME. READY, SET, LETTER. >> B. >> LETTER. >> K. >> LETTER. >> L. >> LETTER. >> H, O, V, S, T, U, G. >> AWESOME JOB, KISS YOUR BRAIN. [OVERLAPPING] SO WE'RE GOING TO START WITH THAT LEARNING TARGET. >> SO I'LL DO MY BEST TO DESCRIBE THAT AS A SECONDARY PERSON. [LAUGHTER] WELL, WITH THE SCIENCE OF READING IT IS HANDS-ON, BUT IT'S ALSO VERY ENGAGING WHERE THEY'RE GOING OVER SMALL PARTS OF THE WORDS AND THEN PUTTING THEM TOGETHER. THEN THEY ALSO DO A LOT OF SENSATION SO THERE'S SAND THAT THEY'RE WRITING THE LETTERS WITH. AND SO THERE'S A READING ROPE AND I'M LEARNING ABOUT THE READING ROPE, LISA, I'M TRYING SO HARD HERE BUT THERE'S TWO PARTS OF THE READING ROPE AND SO THEY'RE WORKING ON PUTTING THAT TOGETHER. ELEMENTARY TEAM DID AN AMAZING JOB YOU COULD PROBABLY COME UP AND DO WAY BETTER. AT LEAST, I'M TRYING. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE REALLY LOOKING AT AS A SUMMER SCHOOL TEAM IS BECAUSE WE HAVE THIS REALLY STRUCTURED APPROACH WITH THE SCIENCE OF READING. BUT WE ALSO HAVE A GREAT NEED WITH LCL COMPONENTS AND ESPECIALLY WITH NOW A NEW LCL CURRICULUM. THAT'S ONE THING THAT WE'LL LOOK AT THIS NEXT YEAR. AS DO WE WANT TO FOCUS SO STRONG USING THE SCIENCE OF READING? OR DO WE WANT TO MIX IN SOME OF THOSE THOUGHT AND STEP COMPONENTS? BECAUSE PART OF SUMMER SCHOOL IS REBUILDING CONFIDENCE AND HELPING STUDENTS TO GAIN THOSE LITERACY SKILLS, BUT ALSO GET READY FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. REALLY HAVING THAT HOPE THAT THEY CAN AND LEARN HOW TO READ. SO THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS WE'LL LOOK. >> HI ALL. I'M JOY GARNER, INSPIRATIONAL EQUITY COACH, A MIDDLE LEVEL AND WE HAD RISING SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADERS FOR ODYSSEY, SKYBRIDGE, AND LIBERTY, AND ONE RISING FIFTH GRADER THAT WORKED WITH THE FAMILY TO HAVE THE SISTERS TOGETHER WITH TRANSPORTATION AND WHAT HAVE YOU IT ABSOLUTELY, WE CAN ACCOMMODATE THAT. HERE'S A LITTLE OUTLINE OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED WHAT A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MIDDLE SCHOOL WOULD LOOK LIKE AND THE PROGRAM THIS YEAR, WHICH WAS DESIGNED A BIT DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST SUMMER. LAST SUMMER WAS MORE PROJECT-BASED AND WE HAVE THE SUMMER OLYMPICS AND SO THERE WAS A WORLD EVENT TO FOCUS ON AND HAVE ACCESS POINTS WITH AND WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IS IT CAN'T BE FORCED. YOU GOT TO HAVE THE NATURAL EVENTS AND THE INTEGRATION SO WE PIVOTED. WE HAD FOUR ADULTS WITH A NUMBER OF MIDDLE SCHOOLERS AND LIKE IT SAYS IN THERE, WE HAD A RISING FIFTH GRADER, 19 RISING SIXTH GRADERS, 11 RISING SEVENTH GRADERS, EIGHT STUDENTS WITH IEPS AND FOUR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS IN OUR MIX OF KIDDOS. [01:10:02] WE START EVERY DAY WITH BREAKFAST AND THEN WE WOULD HAVE COMMUNITY TIME OR THEY LIKE OUR WARM WELCOME WHERE THEY HAD OPTIONS TO TURN AND TALK WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH ONE ANOTHER AND WITH THE CLASS. THEN WE HAD TIME EVERY DAY FOR A SECTION OF ELA ENRICHMENT AND A SECTION FOR MATH ENRICHMENT BREAKS AND THEN A STEM OR STEAM CHALLENGE, WE HAD TWO OVER THAT AND THEN AN OPTIMISTIC CLOSE THAT WOULD LEAD INTO THE NEXT DAY. WITH OUR PROGRAM THIS YEAR, WE WANTED TO PROVIDE TIME FOR STUDENTS TO BE WITH ONE ANOTHER AND GET SOME FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS. PRACTICE WITH BEING MIDDLE SCHOOLERS IN MATH, WITH REAL-WORLD MATH AND FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS, ALONG WITH IN READING, READING, FLUENCY. THEN THE STEM PROJECTS TO BUILD IN WITH THE SEL BENCHMARKS FOR STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, SELF-MANAGEMENT, AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT AS WELL AND GIVE THEM A SCAFFOLD THAT. WE HAD TO STEM PROJECTS. WE WORKED ON THE STL BENCHMARKS THROUGH MINI-PROJECT CALLED LEARNED HELPLESSNESS VERSUS AGENCY IN RECOGNIZING, ESPECIALLY, COMING OUT OF PANDEMIC, THOSE MOMENTS OF FEELING HELPLESS [NOISE] AND THAT YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE A LOT OF AGENCY IDENTIFYING WHERE YOU DO HAVE AGENCY, WHETHER IT'S IN YOUR MINDSET OR HOW YOU ASK FOR HELP OR ENGAGE. IN THE MIDDLE THERE, WE DID A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT WALKING FIELD TRIPS. WE DID ONE DOWN TO SAFEWAY AND THE STUDENTS WERE IN MATH THEMES AND THEY HAD $20 TO PLAN A ROAD TRIP. WITH THAT, THEY HAD TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER AND ITEMS IN THE STORE FOR THE LENGTH OF THE TRIP AND HOW DO WE FEED AND PROVIDE LIQUIDS FOR EVERYONE IN THE VEHICLE FOR THAT TRIP AND SO THEY GOT TO MANAGE THAT. I WAS AT ONE OF THE DOORS MONITORING HOW THEY WERE FINISHING AND WORKING AT DIFFERENT TIMES AND A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAME UP AND ASKED WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND I WISH I WOULD HAVE HAD SOME MONEY MANAGEMENT PRACTICE WHEN I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT'S AWESOME. GREAT FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY WHEN WE WERE OUT IN IT. THEN THEY ALSO MADE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES, WE CHECKED WITH ALL THE FOOD, THINGS THAT WE COULD DO WITH ALLERGIES AND WHAT HAVE YOU AND THEY WORKED ON RECIPES AND PUT IT TOGETHER AND PRODUCE WITH THAT. SO SOME GREAT REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS OF MATH. THEN WE BUILT IN A READ ALOUD OF WHEN YOU TRACK FIGURE, WHICH WAS A FORMER NEWBURY AND WITH THAT, INTRODUCED SKETCH NOTES TO GIVE THEM ANOTHER ACCESS POINT WHEN THEY DO HAVE A READ ALOUD OR THEY ARE TAKING IN INFORMATION THAT'S MOSTLY AUDIBLE AND NOT VISUAL. HOW DO YOU MAKE MEANING WITH THAT. BEING ABLE TO USE SKETCH NOTES, USE WORDS AND VISUALS TO HELP WITH THAT. AS AN ADDED BONUS WITH THE SUPPORTIVE KIM DANIELS, WE WERE ABLE TO GET ADS. FOR SOME OF OUR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS, ONE THAT WAS WITHIN A MONTH FROM UKRAINE INTO OUR PROGRAM AND SO WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE BOOK IN RUSSIAN AND SOME OTHER LANGUAGES AS WELL. STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS POINTS THAT WAY. THEN WE USE THE SIX-MINUTE SOLUTION READING FLUENCY PROGRAM WITH STUDENTS AND READING ENRICHMENT TO GIVE THEM A FOUNDATION OF THOSE FLUENCY SKILLS THAT THEY'RE PRACTICING WITH READING LEVEL APPROPRIATE TEXT. THAT IS AT A MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL AND SO THEY CAN HAVE THAT PRACTICE, SO THEY CAN SPEND THEIR COGNITIVE TIME IN THE NOT CODING, BUT IN THE MEANING-MAKING OF THE COMPREHENSION LEVEL AND ALL THE SUBJECTS. HERE YOU HAVE SOME VISUALS OF THEM IN OUR TWO STEM CHALLENGES. ONE OF THEM WAS, YOU'RE IN YOUR TEAMS, YOU'RE GIVEN A PACK OF INDEX CARDS AND YOU HAVE TO ELEVATE A STOOL. THEY HAVE OLD SCHOOL SO HOW DO YOU DO THAT AND SO SOME OF THEM DID CRUMPLE APPROACH, OTHERS DID STRUCTURE APPROACH, FILL THE BOX. WHAT HAVE YOU. THEN IN THE OTHER ONE, WE DID A SUMMER SCAPE AND THEY ALL HAD UPCYCLED ITEMS, STARTING A SHOE BOX AND THEN DIFFERENT MATERIALS THAT WE FOUND THEY BROUGHT AND THEY CREATED SUMMER IN FLOCKS OF WHAT IS THAT LIKE FOR YOU IN YOUR FRUIT. BECAUSE THE NIC COULD BE CAMUS THEME, BOUNCING THEME, SOME OF THEM COMBINED. YOU CAN SEE THEM ACTIVELY IN THAT COLLABORATIVE PROCESS THERE. THEN THE OTHER WALKING FIELD TRIP WE DID WAS THE LACK OF MISSPELLS TO ROUND LAKE AND THEY BROUGHT AND SEE THEIR JOURNALS WITH THEM AND HAD TIME TO SIT IN NATURE AND CAPTURE IT IN EITHER ETCHINGS AND WRITINGS THAT WE DID OVER [01:15:01] SUMMER SCHOOL OR PRACTICING BEING GROUNDED IN SOUND AND FITTING IN A PLACE THEN LISTENING AND PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT'S COMING AT YOU FROM IN FRONT OF YOU, FROM THE SIDE, FROM BEHIND YOU, ABOVE YOU, AND THEY WORK OUT IN IT. THEN WITH THE WORKING ON FLUENCY, THE SCREENER WE USED IN THE FIRST WEEK AND THEN THE FOURTH WEEK WAS THE HASBROUCK AND TYNDALL ORAL READING FLUENCY. IT GIVES, AS YOU CAN SEE UP THERE, WHAT IS EXPECTED OF A READER IN THE FALL OF READING FLUENCY. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE FRACTIONS THERE, IF THEY DIDN'T MEET THE GOAL WITHIN THAT TIME PERIOD BETWEEN THE FIRST AND THE LAST SCREENER, THEY MADE PROGRESS THAT THEY WERE READING MORE WORDS A MINUTE. THEY WERE BEGINNING WITH ME [INAUDIBLE]. THEN WITH THE SIX-MINUTE SOLUTION AGAIN, IT'S A DIFFERENT PROGRAM AND IT GIVES A PROJECTED [INAUDIBLE] PER MINUTE. THAT'S ANOTHER APP AND AS YOU CAN SEE, EVERYONE MADE PROGRESS YET AGAIN. WITH THIS, THEY DID CRACK THEIR DATA WEEKLY SO THEY COULD SEE THEIR GROWTH AND HOW THEY WENT. WITH THAT, WE'VE SUBSTITUTED IT WITH WHY DO WE HAVE REPEATED READINGS. WE USE THAT FOR SUMMARIZING, FOR GOING BACK AND LOOKING AT DIFFERENT DETAILS AND AUTHOR'S PURPOSE AND OTHER PIECES OF THAT NATURE. WE'RE VERY INVOLVED IN THAT PROCESS. THEN, AT THE END OF SUMMER SCHOOL, WE'VE PROVIDED THEM WITH A SURVEY AND A LIST OF WHAT WE COVERED IN LANGUAGE ARTS ENRICHMENT AND MATH ENRICHMENT AND JUST OVERALL EXPERIENCES SO THEY COULD HAVE THOSE AND REFLECT ON THEM AND THEN THESE ARE THEIR WORDS OF FILLING IN WHAT WAS SOMETHING GOOD FOR ME TO PRACTICE IN LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH, AND THEN JUST SOMETHING ABOUT MYSELF AS A LEARNER. YOU CAN SEE THERE THE THEMES IN LANGUAGE ARTS WAS READING, FLUENCY PRACTICE. THEY SAID IT IN LOTS OF DIFFERENT WAYS, BUT IT'S A THREAD THAT RUNS THROUGH ALL OF THOSE. IN MATH ORDER OF OPERATIONS, I APPRECIATED THE CLOCKS BECAUSE THAT IS THE HARDEST THING FOR ME EVEN NOW. IT'S STILL HARD AND THE FRACTIONS AND CLOCKS AND PARENTHESES AND PEMDAS AND HOW TO USE THE TIMETABLES TO HELP DO DIVISION, LOTS OF DIFFERENT TAKEAWAYS AND YOU CAN SEE THE BREADTH OF WHAT WAS PRACTICED WITH THE MATH ENRICHMENT TO GIVE THEM THOSE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS TO THEN USE IN MATH IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. THEN JUST THE INDIVIDUAL TAKEAWAYS FROM SUMMER, I CAN GET STUCK IN MATH, BUT KEEP GOING. I WANT TO REMEMBER THAT I CAN DO MATH BY ASKING MYSELF, I'M A FAST LEARNER AND I'M COMPETITIVE. I'M A VISUAL LEARNER, I'M STRONGER WHEN I BELIEVE IN MY JUST, IN GENERAL, THEY'RE TAKES PLACE. QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AREAS, THE READING? >> THAT INSTRUCTIONS TO STAY CLOSE TO THE MIC AM I CLOSE ENOUGH? I'M JILL MARIE HOLSTER, I TEACH FIFTH GRADE MATH AND SCIENCE AT PRUNE HILL. I LOVE TEACHING MATH TO KIDS, ESPECIALLY IF I HAVE A CHILD THAT THINKS THAT THEY ARE STUPID IT BATH OR DAMMIT BATH FOR ALL THE TIME AND WHEN I GET TO SEE THEM TURN THAT AROUND, LIKE THAT IS MY JAM. DOING SUMMER SCHOOL, MOST OF THESE STUDENTS THAT ARE COMING INTO US, ARE STUDENTS THAT HAVE NOT HAD THE MOST POSITIVE EXPERIENCE IN SCHOOL, PERIOD. SOMETIMES IT COMES WITH A LOT OF TRAUMA BECAUSE THEY ARE WHATEVER REASON CAN'T READ AT THE LEVEL OF THEIR PEERS, THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE MATH. THERE MAY BE SOCIAL ISSUES OR FAMILY ISSUES. THERE'S A WHOLE VARIETY OF THINGS THAT BRING THESE KIDS TO US, BUT MOST OF THE KIDS THAT COME IN TO US IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM, BIG SEL ISSUES AND IT HAS TO DO WITH NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL ONES. THE FIRST DAY, KEN AND I COULD TELL THERE WAS NO CHANCE THAT WE COULD DO ANY BEGINNING ASSESSMENTS BECAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCH MATH HERE. I'M GOING TO LITERALLY CALL IT PHOBIA. I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENS WITH SUMMER SCHOOL, [01:20:01] I'M PRETTY SURE THIS PROBABLY HAPPENS WITH ELEMENTARY KIDS IN A SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM TOO, BUT BECAUSE EVERYBODY ELSE WASN'T SOME BRILLIANT GENIUS THAT COULD JUST GIVE YOU THE ANSWER LIKE THIS OR KNEW THEIR MATH FACTS AND COULD SNAP IT OUT. SUDDENLY THE PLAYING FIELD BECAME A MUCH MORE RELAXED ATMOSPHERE AND YOU HAD THESE TEACHERS THAT WERE SAYING, HEY, IT MAY BE HARD NOW KEEP PRACTICING. YOU'RE GOING TO GET BETTER AT IT AND GETTING THEM TO CHANGE THEIR ATTITUDE FROM WHAT THEIR ABILITY IS VERSUS WHAT THEIR EFFORTS. WHICH IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IF YOU READ UP ON ASIAN STUDENTS THAT ARE ALWAYS SCORING REALLY HIGH, THEIR BACKGROUND COMES FROM EFFORTS, NOT ABILITY, THAT FULL GROWTH MINDSET PART. WE SAW TREMENDOUS GROWTH, MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T COMPETING WITH THEIR PEERS. WE SAW THEM GROW TO DEVELOP REALLY GOOD FRIENDSHIPS IN A VERY SHORT TIME, AND THEY WERE TRYING. THEY WERE REALLY TRYING AND THAT WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE. YOU CAN'T PUT A NUMBER ON THAT AND I REALLY WISH TO FOOT SO THAT YOU CAN SEE THE GROWTH IN THEM. OUR ONE STUDENT THAT CAME FROM UKRAINE, HE CAME WITH NO ENGLISH WHATSOEVER AND WE DID DO RUNNING RECORDS ON HIM. I BELIEVE HE STARTED AT 18 WORDS, NOT EVEN AND IT WAS 50 SOME WORDS THAT HE WAS ABLE TO READ AT THE END. NOW HE CAME TO US AND THEN HAD TO BE GONE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK, AND WITH THE FAMILY AND ALL THE TRANSITIONS THAT THEY WERE DOING AND THAT THING, THAT'S ASTOUNDING. THAT'S REALLY ASTOUNDING, THIS CHILD THAT COMES FROM ALL THIS DRAMA FROM WAR, HIS CITY DOESN'T EXIST, HE LITERALLY CAME FROM MARIUPOL, IT'S GONE. HIS FAMILIES MOVED MULTIPLE TIMES JUST TO GET HERE TO STAY AND GET THAT MUCH LANGUAGE THAT IS ACTUALLY ABLE TO READ, NOT JUST SPEAK. THAT'S SO AMAZING AND I REALLY THINK IT'S A CREDIT TO JOY AND TO KATY BARRY JONES WORKING THE ELA PROGRAM AND HOW WELL THEY DID WITH THAT. I ALSO WANTED TO TAKE A MOMENT TO MAKE SURE THAT JOY HAS BEEN THE LEAD FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM TWO YEARS IN A ROW NOW AND I REALLY THINK HER COACHING WITH A LOT OF THE SEL AND LEARNED HELPLESSNESS FIS2T AGENCY HAS BEEN A HUGE FOUNDATIONAL BLOCK FOR THAT MIDDLE PROGRAM. I'M REALLY HOPING THAT IT CONTINUES. [LAUGHTER] I KNOW JOY WON'T BE WITH US NEXT YEAR, BUT I'M HOPING IT CONTINUES AND THEN I ALSO WANTED TO JUST TELL YOU, DR. HOLT WAS AMAZING WITH THESE KIDS, AMAZING. SOME OF THEM WERE INTERESTING CHALLENGES, I'M GOING TO PUT IT THAT WAY. THEY WERE GREAT KIDS, BUT THEY STRUGGLED SOMETIMES AND THE WAY HE HANDLED THAT YOU COULD HAVE HAD TRAINING VIDEOS ON IT, [LAUGHTER] IT WAS JUST WONDER. I WANT TO THANK THE BOARD FOR LETTING US DO THIS, AND I REALLY DO HOPE THAT WE CAN FIND WAYS IN THIS GOING. >> THANKS TO YOU BOTH FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK THIS SUMMER AND I THINK A BIG PART OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAM THAT I NOTICED THAT CONSISTENCY IN STAFFING. WE HAD FOUR TEACHERS THEN THREE OF THEM WERE WITH US LAST YEAR AND SO I THINK THAT ALLOWED US TO BUILD ON THE SUCCESS OF LAST YEAR. I'LL WRAP UP QUICKLY WITH HIGH SCHOOL. MY HIGH SCHOOL COORDINATOR DID SUCH A GREAT JOB THAT SHE GOT A JOB AT EVERGREEN. SHE'S NOT HERE WITH US THIS EVENING BUT SHE DID AN AMAZING JOB HELPING ME RUN THE HIGH-SCHOOL PROGRAM, 330 STUDENTS. LIKE I SAID, WE DID ADD A PEN HEALTH AND SO WE HAD AN 82 PERCENT COURSE COMPLETION RATE AND 448 SEMESTER CLASSES WERE COMPLETED SO IT MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN REPAIRING TRANSCRIPTS. BUT AGAIN, LIKE I WAS SAYING EARLIER, IT'S A LOT OF THAT CONFIDENCE BUILDING AND TEACHING STUDENTS THAT THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL WHEN THEY HIT ROADBLOCKS. WE ALSO MADE A CHANGE FROM LAST YEAR WHERE WE POSTED THE GRADES AND THE SKYWARD OUR SELF, WHICH I HAD A GOAL TO GET THAT DONE BY ABOUT AUGUST 12TH THEN I THINK WE GOT IT DONE BY AUGUST 17TH, WHICH WAS RIGHT WHEN ALL THE COUNSELORS CAME BACK, SO THAT WAS A BIG CHANGE FROM LAST YEAR. THEN LIKE I SAID EARLIER, WE HAD SOME BEHAVIOR ISSUES THAT CAME UP, BUT WE HAD SOME CREATIVE SOLUTIONS WITH THAT WE ARE ABLE TO HANDLE THAT PRETTY WELL. THEN [NOISE] WE DID QUITE A BIT AFTER. LAST YEAR WAS MY FIRST TIME USING EDGE ANNUITY. I USE A LOT OF DIFFERENT PROGRAMS IN OREGON, BUT THIS YEAR I WAS MORE FAMILIAR WITH IT AND SO WE'RE ABLE TO GET THE KIDS START IN THE CLASS AS QUICKER AND HELP THEM TO HAVE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE WITH IT. THOSE ARE OUR CELEBRATIONS LIKE I SAID, [01:25:01] I MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE FIRST ONE TO FORAY INTO THE DRESS CODE SITUATION, BUT MY TEAM JUST FELT AS A TEAM FOR HAVING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT. IT WAS IMPORTANT SO WE WENT AHEAD AND WENT THERE AND THEN I HEARD THAT THERE WAS RUMORS IN TEACHER MEETINGS ALL OVER THE DISTRICT THAT I HAD GONE THERE, ANYWAY. WE ALSO NEED TO CONTINUE TO WORK ON PLAGIARISM. EDGE ANNUITY IS USED ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND SO THERE'S A LOT OF ANSWERS OUT THERE AND SO MY CCA TEAM HAS ACCESS TO TURNITIN.COM AND SOME OTHER MEASURES TO MITIGATE THAT. BUT WE HAVE TO DO A LOT OF WORK WITH THE KIDS ABOUT, HEY, WE KNOW THAT AS OPPOSED TO A 100 PERCENT PLAGIARIZED AND SO WE NEED YOU TO REDO IT, SO WE USUALLY TURN THE FIRST EXPERIENCE INTO OUR LEARNING EXPERIENCE. THE SECOND ONE, THEY MISS OUT ON THAT ASSIGNMENT AND THEN THE THIRD ONE USUALLY END UP FAILING THE CLASS. THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN THAT OFTEN, USUALLY THEY LEARNED SO WE HAD LOTS OF CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THAT. THEN I WOULD SAY TO THAT ACCESS TO SKYWARD DURING SUMMER SCHOOL WOULD HELP. BUT I DON'T KNOW THAT THAT'S NECESSARILY ESSENTIAL BECAUSE WE GOT THE GRADES AND THE SKYWARD PRETTY EASILY. I WANT TO SAY THANKS AGAIN FOR THE BOARD. SUMMER SCHOOL IS A BIG PART OF WHAT WE DO HERE IN URBAN STUDENTS AND HELPING THEM MAKE THOSE IMPORTANT GAINS AND SO WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FUTURE. BUT I THINK IT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT PROGRAM, GLAD TO BE A PART OF IT. >> ANY QUESTIONS? >> [NOISE] I JUST HAD ONE. FOR THE STUDENTS THAT ATTEND SUMMER SCHOOL, ARE WE TRACKING THEM AND CHECKING IN WITH THEM THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THEN, HOW DOES THAT WORK? >> THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION, I THINK WE WANTED TO DO THAT LAST YEAR AND IT WAS HARD. I HAVE BETTER LIST THIS YEAR AND SO I FEEL LIKE I CAN TRACK THEM BETTER AND I COULD PROBABLY WORK WITH LISA AND JEN ON AT LEAST WITH M CLASS. WITH HIGH SCHOOL IT'S MORE ABOUT CREDIT COMPLETION AND THEN WITH MIDDLE-SCHOOL, WE DO HAVE I-READY. THERE IS SOME TRACKING THAT WE CAN DO, PROBABLY THE MOST VALUABLE DATA POINT WOULD BE COMPARING THE SPRING M CLASS AND SPRING I-READY TO THE FALL TO SEE IF THERE WAS GAINS OR AT LEAST THAT THERE WASN'T A SUMMARY SLIDE YOU HEARD. WE JUST COMPLETED THE FALL IN CLASS AND I THINK I ALREADY CLOSES IN OCTOBER, SO HOPEFULLY I CAN PULL THE TEAM TOGETHER BECAUSE I DO THINK THAT'S VALUABLE. I THINK THAT'LL GIVE YOU ALL SOME DATA IS. [OVERLAPPING] >> ABSOLUTELY. >> I'D LOVE TO SEE THAT SO IF THERE'S A WAY YEAH, WE'D LOVE TO HAVE THAT REPORT BACK. >> THERE'S A WAY. >> THERE'S A WAY. >> THE NUMBERS. >> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FOR THE TEAM. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR WORK, FOR GIVING US YOUR SUMMER. WE APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU. OUR FOURTH AND FINAL REPORT HERE FROM LAURA PERRY IS OUR NUTRITION SERVICES REPORT. >> HI, EVERYONE. I'M LAURA PERRY I'M THE NUTRITION SERVICES DIRECTOR HERE. IF I LOOK A LITTLE FAMILIAR TO SOME OF YOU, IT'S BECAUSE I WAS HERE IN THE 16-17 SCHOOL YEAR, RAN WAY UP TO WOODLAND FOR ABOUT FIVE YEARS. BUT EVENTUALLY I KNEW I ALWAYS WANTED TO COME BACK AND THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF AND I SAID, YEAH, LET'S DO IT, SO I'M HAPPY TO BE BACK. LUCKILY, IT WAS A REALLY SMOOTH TRANSITION FOR ME. I KNEW PRETTY MUCH HALF THE STAFF AND HERE, HALF THE STAFF OUT IN THE SCHOOL SO IT WAS REALLY AWESOME TO BE BACK IN CANVAS LAST YEAR. I JUST WANTED TO TAKE THE TIME TO SHOW YOU WHAT WE DID LAST YEAR AND FILL YOU IN ON WHAT WE'VE STARTED THIS YEAR AS WELL. THAT PICTURE DOWN THERE WAS OUR END OF THE YEAR PARTY. WE WENT OUT ABOUT THE LAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE SCHOOL AND JUST WAS LIKE, HEY, LET'S GO OUT AND HAVE SOME DINNER AND JUST HANG OUT AND JUST DE-STRESS FROM THE YEAR. THEN THAT OTHER PICTURE OVER THERE IS OUR DESSERT FROM OUR FINE DININGS, WE DID TWO FINE DININGS AND THAT WAS OUR POUND CAKE DESSERT WITH FRESH BERRIES. THE LITTLE ORANGE BALLS YOU SEE ARE JUST THESE LITTLE BUBBLES OF MANGO FLAVOR THAT BURST IN THE MOUTH WHICH THE KIDS, YOU CAN JUST HEAR THEM GO, WHOA, IT WAS PRETTY COOL. I JUST WANT TO SHOW YOU THE BREAKDOWN OF MEALS. I REALLY HAVE TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO OUR NUTRITION SERVICES TEAM THAT ARE ON THE FLOOR IN THE KITCHEN EVERY DAY. THEY SERVED THIS MANY MEALS LAST YEAR, 144,000 FOR BREAKFAST AND 565,000 FOR LUNCH AND WE FELT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE MEALS ABSOLUTELY GO OUT [LAUGHTER] OF THOSE KITCHENS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, EVEN THOUGH WE HAD OUR STRUGGLES AT SOME POINTS WE HAD OUT 33 PERCENT OF OUR STAFF A DAY AND WE STILL MANAGED TO PULL IT TOGETHER TO FEED THE KIDS AND GET THEM FOOD. SOMETHING THAT I SAY A LOT TO MY STAFF THAT THEY ARE LIKE, YEAH, WE KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO SAY THIS NOW IS I HAVE TWO EXPECTATIONS OF THEM EVERY DAY IS TO BE SAFE AND FEED THE KIDS. EVERYTHING ELSE WE WILL FIGURE IT OUT JUST THOSE TWO THINGS WHEN IT GETS CLEARLY, JUST FOCUS ON THAT AND WE WILL GET THROUGH IT. [01:30:01] REALLY AWESOME, FANTASTIC TEAM TO SERVE ALL THESE MEALS. ANOTHER THING IS GOING THROUGH THE WASHINGTON LEGISLATURE RIGHT NOW IS A BILL OR PASSING FOR FREE MEALS FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. IF THAT DOES COME INTO EFFECT, WE ACTUALLY HAVE THESE NUMBERS TO GO OFF OF HER SCHOOL PER MONTH, PER WEEK AND ANY FORM WE WANT TO SO THAT WILL HELP US PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR. IF THAT DOESN'T PASS, THEN WE HAVE THIS YEAR'S DATA SO GOING INTO NEXT YEAR WE SHOULD BE VERY SECURE AS WELL. JUST SOME CHANGES THAT WE MADE. WE REVAMPED THE MENUS LAST YEAR, MADE THEM MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THE COMMUNITY. WE HAVE PRINTED OUT ALL THE MENUS AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, SO EVERY SINGLE STUDENT WILL GO HOME WITH A MENU. I STARTED TRANSLATING THEM INTO SPANISH AND RUSSIAN AS WELL, AND THOSE ARE POSTED ONLINE AND I WORKED WITH THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION TEAMS IF THEY WANT ANY PRINTED COPIES. I ALSO ADDED A V SYMBOL TO NOTATE ANY VEGETARIAN OPTIONS TO HELP THOSE WHO ARE VEGETARIAN PLAN A LITTLE BIT MORE ACCORDINGLY. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE CHANGED THIS YEAR IS EVERY LEVEL HAS A VEGETARIAN OPTION EVERY SINGLE DAY AT EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL. NO MATTER WHAT, VEGETARIANS ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT AND WE'RE EXPANDING THAT AND TRYING TO WORK TOWARDS GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE AS WELL SO HOPEFULLY THAT WILL GET GOING DOWN THE ROAD AS WELL. SALAD BARS, YOU BROUGHT BACK A LOT OF OUR SALAD BARS. THIS WAS A REALLY BIG HIT WITH THE KIDS. WE ADD A LARGE AMOUNT OF TURNOVER LAST YEAR. WE HAD A LOT OF NEW STAFF MEMBERS WHO HAD NEVER WORKED WITH SALAD BARS BEFORE AND THEY WERE TERRIFIED OF IT. THEY WERE LIKE THE KIDS AREN'T GOING TO GET IT. THEY'RE GOING TO BE CONFUSED. I WAS LIKE, NO, THESE KIDS ARE SMART. I CHECKED IN WITH EVERYONE ON CAMPUS, THE FIRST DAY WAS SALAD VARGA. IF I COULDN'T MAKE IT TO THAT SCHOOL THAT DAY AND THEY'RE LIKE, THESE KIDS, THEY DID IT AND I'M LIKE, I KNOW YOU GOT TO GIVE THESE KIDS A CHANCE BECAUSE THEY'LL SURPRISE YOU. THE BIG HIT WITH THE KIDS ALLOWED US TO OFFER SOME MORE VARIETY AS WELL. WE'RE GOING TO START TO EAT THESE SALAD BAR A FEW WEEKS SO WE'RE GOING TO FEATURE A DIFFERENT LETTER OF THE ALPHABET FOR EACH FRUIT OR VEGETABLE. WE'RE GOING TO HAVE SOME FUN ONES ON THERE LIKE APPLES SOMETHING THAT THEY KNOW AND SOMETHING THAT THEY DON'T KNOW, LIKE [INAUDIBLE]. [LAUGHTER] IT'S COOL LEARNING MOMENT TO HELP AND PUSH KIDS OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE, THAT THEY CAN PUT IT ON THEIR PLATE, TRY IT, AND IT'S OKAY IF THEY DON'T LIKE IT, THEY'RE NOT STUCK WITH IT. THAT FIRST PICTURE OF THE POUND CAKE THAT WAS FROM ONE OF OUR TWO FINE DINING EVENTS THIS YEAR. WE HAD OUR FINE DINING EVENTS AT WOODBURN AND PRUNE HILL, THEY WERE PHENOMENAL SUCCESSES. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN. IT'S PERSONALLY MY FAVORITE EVENT THAT WE DO SO I LOVE IT. NEXT YEAR I MADE THE COMMITMENT TO DO ALL SIX ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS SO HAYES. [LAUGHTER] I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN THOSE GET CLOSER. IF YOU GUYS ARE ABLE TO COMBINE AND COME JOIN US, WE'D LOVE IT, WE ALREADY HAVE TWO PLAN AND I'M HOPING TO GET THE REST OF THEM FINALIZED IN THE NEXT 3-4 WEEKS. HOPEFULLY I CAN SAY THAT ALL THOSE WITH THE DAY SO PUT ON YOUR CALENDAR SOON. WE ALSO STARTED DOING BARBECUES, WE'VE DONE THIS IN THE PAST. WE HAD SIX BARBECUES AT ALL THE ELEMENTARIES IN HAYES AND AT PRUNE HILL AND DOROTHY FOX, WE WERE ABLE TO OPEN IT UP TO THE COMMUNITY. PRUNE HILL, WE'VE DONE THIS IN THE PAST, WE'VE REFORMATTED IT LAST YEAR AND IT WENT REALLY WELL. DOROTHY FOX, THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME WE OPENED IT TO THE COMMUNITY. I WANT TO SAY THE ONLY THING THAT WE REALLY WENT WRONG WAS THE WEATHER. [LAUGHTER] DR. [INAUDIBLE] AND I WERE LIKE, YEAH, JUNE 10TH, YEAH. WE SHOULD BE FINE. GOOD CHANCE. NO POURING DOWN RAIN. [LAUGHTER] BUT WE LEARNED A LOT OF LESSONS AND SO WE'RE HOPING TO KEEP EXPANDING THE BARBECUES AND OPEN IT UP TO THE COMMUNITY AS WELL GOING ON IN THE NEXT YEAR TOO. ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS I LIKE TO DO IS CELEBRATE HOLIDAYS. I THINK BACK TO WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL, WHAT DO I REMEMBER THE MOST? I REMEMBER HOLIDAYS MORE THAN I THINK ANYTHING ELSE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO LUNCH. WE STARTED DOING A TREAT A MONTH TO CELEBRATE WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THAT MONTH. YOU SEE PICTURES HERE FROM ST. PATRICK'S DAY, THAT'S AMBER MAKING OUR GREEN PUDDING RIGHT THERE. WE USUALLY HAVE MENU MEETINGS WITH THE STAFF TO TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING TOGETHER AND SHARE TIPS AND TALK OUT PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS. WHEN WE WERE DECIDING ON THE STREET, BECKY, OUR LEAD AT HELEN BALLER TOLD ME I'M GOING TO MAKE THE GREEN IS PUTTING IN YOU'VE EVER SEEN AND THAT IS THE GREEN IS PUTTING I'VE EVER SEEN. SHE COMMITTED TO THAT 100 PERCENT. IT'S A LOT OF FUN. I'VE GOTTEN A LOT OF GOOD FEEDBACK FROM THE STAFF THAT THEY REALLY LIKE TO DO THESE EXTRA THINGS FOR THE KIDS AND IT REALLY BRINGS A SMILE TO THEIR FACE AS WELL AS THE STUDENTS. WE'RE GOING TO KEEP RAMPING IT UP AND DO SOME MORE FUN STUFF THIS YEAR AS WELL. FIRST OFF, I WANT TO POINT OUT THIS BEAUTIFUL FLOWER PICTURE HERE. THAT'S JUST NOT A RANDOM PHOTO. THOSE WERE OUR FLOWERS FROM OUR FINE DINING EVENT AT PRUNE HILL. I WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO TAMMY WESTMORELAND BECAUSE I THINK SHE REALLY MISSED HER FALLING AS A FLOWER DECORATOR BECAUSE SHE PUT TOGETHER THESE BEAUTIFUL ARRANGEMENTS AND IT WAS GREAT SO I JUST WANTED TO GIVE A LITTLE SHOUT OUT TO HER FOR THAT. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, WE HAD SOME STAFFING STRUGGLES. THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF TURNOVER OVER THE SUMMER, [01:35:02] WHICH STARTED US WITH 14 OPEN POSITIONS. WE WERE ABLE TO FILL ALL OF THEM BY WINTER BREAK AND WORKING WITH THEM. JASON AS WELL, WE WERE ABLE TO PRIORITIZE WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE AND WE'RE ABLE TO GET ALL THE SCHOOLS UP AND RUNNING SMOOTHLY. WE ADDED SOME PEOPLE AT DISCOVERY AND ODYSSEY AND A CANVAS HIGH SCHOOL, WE ADDED AN INTERNAL FLOATERS SO SOMEONE TO BUMP AROUND AND HELP OUT ALL THIS PATIENTS, WHICH HAS BEEN A PHENOMENAL SUCCESS. I'M ALSO A SODEXO EMPLOYEE AND WE WERE ABLE TO HIRE A SUPERVISOR UNDER SODEXO AS WELL, SO WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE MORE SUPPORT TO THE SCHOOLS, WHICH HAS BEEN FUN. HER NAME IS MARY, SHE STARTED BACK IN JANUARY WITH US. IT'S BEEN FUNNY BECAUSE I THINK LAST YEAR WAS HER BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. THIS YEAR SHE CAME BACK AND I THINK IT WAS LIKE, OH, THE STAFF WAS LIKE, OH, YOU CAME BACK. SHE'S JUST REALLY GOT IN THE SCHOOLS ESPECIALLY THIS YEAR AND GOT REALLY GOOD BONDING AND HELPING AND IT'S JUST BEEN A REALLY GOOD STARTUP WITH OUR OFFICE TEAM HERE AND BEING ABLE TO HELP IN THE SCHOOLS AS WELL. ANOTHER THING I DID LAST YEAR WAS I OPENED UP A SERVSAFE CLASS. I ALWAYS CALL IT THE FOOD HANDLERS CARD ON STEROIDS BECAUSE IT'S AN ALL DAY EIGHT-HOUR CLASS WITH A TEST AT THE END BECAUSE THIS ENOUGH EIGHT QUESTIONS. I OPENED THAT TO EVERYONE, NOT JUST THE KITCHEN MANAGERS. WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE 21 STAFF MEMBERS OF OURS PASS OUT OF THE 27 THAT SHOWED UP, THE ONES THAT DID NOT PASS. IT WAS LOSS, IT WAS JUST PROBABLY TWO QUESTIONS THAT THEY MISS. I'M HOPING TO OFFER THAT AGAIN NEXT PROBABLY FEBRUARY I'M THINKING OUR CLOSEST TRAINER FOR THAT PROGRAM IS IN PENDLETON, SO I HAVE TO WORK WITH HER SCHEDULE. BUT IT WAS REALLY GOOD LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE STAFF AS WELL. THEY'VE ALREADY ASKED ME WHEN ARE WE DOING THAT AGAIN BECAUSE THEY LIKED IT. ALSO, I WANTED TO REALLY LAST YOUR REFOCUS ON SAFETY, AS YOU'LL SEE IN THE NEXT FEW SLIDES, ONE OF MY BIG STICKLERS IN SAFETY IS WEARING THE SAFETY SHOES. I THINK WORKING IN KITCHENS, THERE'S SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR THINGS TO GET ON THE FLOOR AND GET IN THE WAY. SINCE I'M VERY, WE'LL SAY INTENSE ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT THEY WEAR THEIR SAFETY SHOES, I THOUGHT IT WAS FAIR THAT SODEXO BUYS THEM FOR THEM. I GAVE EVERYONE $100 CREDIT TO BUY SHOES. SOME PEOPLE DID ONE PAIR OF SHOES AND PEOPLE DID TWO. I'M OPENING THAT UP EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL YEAR AS WELL TO NEW EMPLOYEES. I ACTUALLY HAD ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES OVER AT CHS RAVE ABOUT HER SHOES SO MUCH THAT I BOUGHT A PAIR BECAUSE SHE SOLD ME ON THEM. SO THEY ARE ALL REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THEIR SHOES AND I STILL GOT, I CALL IT SHOEMAGEDDON GETTING UP HERE IN THE OFFICE BECAUSE THEY ALL COME HERE SO I CAN GIVE THEM OUT IN PERSON. THAT'S BEEN A REALLY AWESOME FUN TREAT AND THEY'VE REALLY ENJOYED AND BEEN SURPRISED BY THAT, SO IT'S GREAT. SPEAKING ON SAFETY, I HAVE PARTNERED WITH CINTAS LAST YEAR. THEY CAME IN AND INSTALLED ALL THESE FIRST AID KITS IN ALL THE SCHOOLS. THEY COME BACK ONCE A MONTH TO RESTOCK EVERYTHING SO THAT THERE'S ALWAYS FULL FIRST AID CABINETS IN ALL OF OUR KITCHENS, AND THE STAFF KNOW IF WE'RE RUNNING LOW ON SOMETHING AND SOMETHING HAPPENS, WE CAN GET AN OFF-LABEL DELIVERY THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM. THE DAY AFTER THIS ONE WAS INSTALLED, THAT WOULD BURN WAS OUR FINE DINING EVENT WHERE I BURNT MYSELF. I THINK I WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST PERSON TO USE THE FIRST AID KITS. THEY HAVE NOT LET ME FORGET AT ALL [LAUGHTER] I'M ALWAYS ASKING THEM ABOUT THE BURN CREAM AND THE BURN GEL, THEY'RE LIKE, "OH YEAH, WE HAVE IT FOR YOU" AND I'M LIKE, "OH, FOR ME. PERFECT. THANK YOU." THIS HAS BEEN AN AWESOME THING THAT THE STAFF WERE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT HAVING EVERYTHING AVAILABLE AND STOCKED 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME. ANOTHER THING WE DID WAS RE-UPDATE ALL OF OUR SAFETY SHEETS AND WHATNOT. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I HOPE THE STAFF NEVER HAVE TO USE, BUT IF THEY GET SOME EXPOSURE TO SOME CHEMICALS IN THE KITCHEN, THEN WE HAVE A WHOLE SHEET OF WHAT TO DO AND WHO TO CALL AND WHATNOT AND THEY CAN TAKE IT OUT TO THE DOCTOR. I'VE ONLY USED THIS ONCE IN MY CAREER AND IT'S BEEN ABOUT 10 YEARS. I'M HOPING THAT WAS THE ONCE AND ONLY TIME. BUT JUST GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS OF SAFETY, ESPECIALLY WITH THE MAJORITY OF NEW STAFF WE'VE HAD IN THE LAST YEAR AND GOING INTO THIS YEAR. WE'VE REALLY BEEN FOCUSING ON THAT AND MAKING SURE EVERYONE NOT ONLY FEELS COMFORTABLE, BUT IS SAFE IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT AS WELL. WE'VE ALSO CHANGED THE SIGNAGE AROUND THE KITCHEN, SOMETHING WE'RE CONTINUING TO DO THIS YEAR JUST TO MAKE IT LOOK NICE AND MAKING SURE THE KIDS KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON AS WELL. WE'VE BEEN DOING THAT AND THE KIDS HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN NOTICING BECAUSE [LAUGHTER] ONE WENT OUT WITH A TYPO THAT NO ONE CAUGHT AND EVERY SINGLE KID MENTIONED THAT TYPO, WHICH I LIKE TO TURN IT AROUND AND BE LIKE, "YEAH, YOU WON THE CHALLENGE OF FINDING THE TYPO." THANKS FOR CALLING US OUT. THOSE KIDS, THEY READ AND IT'S INTERESTING, BUT THEY ARE ON IT. THEN SOME THINGS THAT WE WANT TO DO NEXT YEAR I'VE ALREADY MENTIONED IS WE WANT TO DO THE FINE DINING THAT ALL SIX ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS CONTINUING THE UPDATE, THE LABELS AND SIGNAGE. WE'VE BROUGHT BACK CASHIER AT ALL THE SCHOOLS AS WELL. ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING THAT I JUST STARTED LAST WEEK TO PROMOTE [01:40:03] IS WE'RE GOING TO UPDATE THE WHOLE MENU CONCEPT THAT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL. IT'S PRETTY SIMILAR TO WHAT WE'RE DOING NOW AND SAYING WE'RE TAKING THE BASIC CONCEPTS AND WE'RE ELEVATING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL, INCLUDING IN THAT ELEVATION IS JUST NEW RECIPES, NEW THEMES. MY FAVORITE IN THE NEW SAUCE IS A LOT OF SCRATCH MADE SAUCES. A LOT OF THINGS THAT GO WELL AND PAIR EACH OTHER. WE HAVE ONLY RE-RETURNING PEOPLE FROM LAST YEAR COMING UP AT CHS, WE HAD A COUPLE OF RETIREMENTS. COUPLE OF PEOPLE LEAVE. COUPLE PEOPLE STEP DOWN AND MOVE INTO DIFFERENT POSITIONS. NOT ONLY HAVING THE STAFF AS A WHOLE NEW STAFF AND TURNING THE WHOLE MENU CONCEPT AND THEY'RE READY FOR IT. IT'S BEEN PHENOMENAL. I DROPPED OFF ALL THE BINDERS AND BOOKLETS IN THE LAST WEEK, AND AS THE SCHOOL LAST YEAR HAD ONE OF THE HARDEST PROBLEMS WITH CHANGE. NOW THEY'RE LIKE, "OKAY, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? I WANT TO DO THIS." IT'S BEEN A 180 WITH THE CONCEPT OF CHANGE AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS PHENOMENAL BECAUSE IT'S GETTING BACK TO THE KID CENTRIC. WHAT CAN WE DO TO IMPRESS THE KIDS? WHAT CAN WE DO TO SPOIL THE KIDS? IT'S BEEN A REALLY FUN EXPERIENCE WITH THEM UPDATING THIS AND STARTING TO HAVE THOSE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE STEP STAFF. ANOTHER THING IS WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING CHEF IN THE CLASSROOM. THAT IS BASICALLY A CONCEPT WHERE THE KITCHEN STAFF GOES INTO THE CLASSROOM. WE READ A FOOD-RELATED BOOK. I USUALLY LIKE TO USE THE EXAMPLE OF DRAGONS LOVE TACOS. HAS ANYONE READ THAT? IT'S ACTUALLY A REALLY CUTE ELEMENTARY AGE BOOK. DRAGONS LOVE TACOS, BUT THEY ALSO HATE SPICY SALSA. WHAT WE DO IS WE READ THE BOOK AND THEN WE HAVE A BUILD YOUR OWN SALSA ACTIVITY SO THEY CAN SEE DIFFERENT INGREDIENTS IN SALSA, TRY THINGS. MY FAVORITE IS WHEN THEY SEE THE CHOPPED UP CILANTRO AND IT'S GREEN. THEY OBVIOUSLY SAY NO. THEN I'M LIKE, "NO, NO, JUST SMELL IT," AND THEY'LL TAKE A BIG WHIFF OF IT AND THEIR EYES LIGHT UP AND LIKE, "YEAH, I WANT THAT." I'M LIKE, "YES, WELCOME TO TEAM CILANTRO." IT'S BEEN REALLY COOL CONCEPTS. [LAUGHTER] WE'RE LOOKING TO KEEP DOING THAT AND INTRODUCE IT MORE. WE'RE BRINGING BACK SOME ALA CARTE BECAUSE THE KIDS HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR COOKIES. WE'RE STARTING THAT PROBABLY IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS OR SO. THEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS I LIKE TO DO IN MARCH, IS I LIKE TO DO A LUNCH MADNESS BRACKET TO GO ON WITH MARCH MADNESS BASKETBALL. INSTEAD OF THE TEAMS ON THE SIDE, WE DO THE LUNCH ENTREES. I SEND IT OUT TO ALL THE SCHOOLS SO THAT TEACHERS CAN EITHER DO IT AS A CLASS ACTIVITY OR AN INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY SO THEY GET TO SEE HOW THAT IS. ALSO IT GIVES US A CHANCE TO COLLECT THAT DATA AND SEE WHAT THE KIDS ARE THINKING, IS THE MOST POPULAR. IT GIVES US A WAY TO SEE, THIS IS WHAT THEY LIKE. IT'S BEEN A LOT OF FUN TO DO THAT AND I'M HOPING TO DO THAT AGAIN NEXT YEAR AS WELL. SPOILER ALERT NACHOS WIN. BUT WE CAN SEE WHAT ELSE COMES IN SECOND, THIRD. LOOKING FORWARD TO A WONDERFUL YEAR, I'LL BE LETTING YOU KNOW ABOUT ANY EVENTS WILL BE HAVING, WE'RE GOING TO BE HAVING A LOT [LAUGHTER] I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT SOME AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR OR WHATNOT, I'M MORE THAN HAPPY TO COME MEET YOU AND TAKE YOU OUT FOR LUNCH AS WELL, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE GET THIS NEW CONCEPT AS CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, I'D LIKE YOU GUYS TO COME OUT AND SEE IF YOU EVER HAVE TIME. LUNCH WILL BE ON ME FOR THAT. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO LISTEN TO MY PRESENTATION AND I HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL NIGHT. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH LAURA. [APPLAUSE] >> THANK YOU. >> GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK [LAUGHTER] ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS BOARD. >> REALLY QUICKLY I JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU, LAURA. THE ENERGY YOU CAN FEEL IT AND THE POSITIVITY FAR CRY FROM THE FOOD SERVICE I HAD GROWING UP. SO THANK YOU. THAT IS THE GOAL. ALSO TO THE FOOD SERVICE WORKERS, UNSUNG HEROES THROUGHOUT COVID, I THINK WE ALL KNOW THAT THROUGH THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS, YOU'RE OUT THERE, THICK AND THIN, SO THANK YOU FOR THAT. TO YOUR POINT ABOUT THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION THAT IS COMING THROUGH LOUD AND CLEAR FROM ESD FROM ACROSS THE STATE. I HOPE TO GET BEHIND THAT AND HOPE TO HAVE THE BOARD SUPPORT. I THINK WE'RE GOING TO FIGHT HARD FOR THAT. ONE OF THE POINTS THAT WAS MADE THROUGH SD WAS TRANSPORTATION HAS BEEN FREE FOR KIDS FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS, BUT YET FOR FOOD HAS NOT. I THINK THAT'S A GOOD POINT GOING IN. LAURA, THANKS FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP. WHEN SHE ASKED TO PRESENT, I SAID ABSOLUTELY. WE'LL HAVE YOU BACK. THANKS. >> LOOKS LIKE FINAL ITEM ON OUR AGENDA. [10. QUALITY FACILITIES AND RESOURCES] ITEM 10A, UNDER QUALITY FACILITIES AND RESOURCES, WE HAVE A THREE-YEAR LEASE THAT TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT IS PUTTING IN FRONT OF US FOR REPLACING CHROMEBOOKS THAT HAVE REACHED THE END OF THEIR USEFUL LIFE. THIS IS COMING OUT OF THE TECHNOLOGY LEVY THAT ARE VOTERS APPROVED. WONDER IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS HERE, I KNOW SHERMAN'S HERE, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, OTHERWISE, LOOK FOR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE. >> ARE THESE CHROMEBOOKS FOR 6-12 GRADERS, REPLACEMENTS? [01:45:05] >> BY THE BULLET ONE AND SO WE'RE NOW TRYING TO SPLIT IT UP THREE TIMES. WHAT WILL PROBABLY [OVERLAPPING] BE 4, 7 AND THAT WILL DO IT AND IT JUST MAKES IT EASIER TO DO THE ROLL-OUT. >> I MOVE FOR APPROVAL OF THE DELL CHROMEBOOK LEASE AS PRESENTED, FOR $795,568.56. >> SECOND THAT. >> IT WAS MOVED BY CONNIE AND ERICA SECONDED. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL RIGHT. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? >> AYE. >> ANY OPPOSED? MOTION CARRIES. THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF OUR REGULAR MEETING. [12. EXECUTIVE SESSION - Property - RCW 42.30.110 (c)] WE ARE GOING TO REASSESS INTO EXECUTIVE SESSION TO DISCUSS PROPERTY. WILL BE ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND NO ACTION WILL BE TAKEN. I'LL TELL YOU WHAT 7:45, I'LL BE BACK TO ADJOURN THE MEETING OFFICIALLY, BUT UNTIL THEN WE ARE IN RECESS. [NOISE] * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
