I'M STARTING OFF TONIGHT WITH A MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD.

I WANT TO WELCOME UP DIRECTOR BURKE, WHO IS GOING TO PRESENT OUR WORK TONIGHT.

I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN THE HELEN BALLER CAFETERIA MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, AND I'VE BEEN IN THERE FOR BREAKFAST AND I'VE BEEN THERE FOR LUNCH RIGHT ALONGSIDE MY FRIEND.

IN TWO DAYS, SHALL BE CELEBRATING HER SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.

OUR DISTRICT IS SO MUCH RICHER FOR HAVING HER IN IT AND HERE'S WHY.

I'VE KNOWN HER FOR A FEW YEARS NOW I MET HER WHEN YOU WORKED AT WHAT BURN.

HERE'S THE THING ABOUT LESLIE IS THAT SHE IS A WARM DEMANDER OF THE STUDENTS.

SHE IS THERE FOR THEM IN THE MORNING.

SHE CALLS THEM ALL BY THEIR NAME.

SO MANY TIMES I'VE SEEN HER GO AND CHECK WITH HIS STUDENTS SITTING ALL BY THEMSELVES AT LUNCH JUST TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE OKAY.

SHE'S KIND, GENEROUS, THOUGHTFUL.

I'VE SEEN HER SPEAKING SPANISH TO STUDENTS AND HAVE THEM RESPOND TO HER AND SMILE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY PRESENCE.

I'M SURE THEY SMILE AT YOU ALL THE TIME.

IN OUR DISTRICT, WE WANT EVERYONE TO FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG AND LESLIE IS SOMETIMES THE FIRST-PERSON, THE FIRST STAFF MEMBER I COULD SEE IN THE MORNING.

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO US AND I'M SO PROUD TO HAVE YOU ON OUR TEAM.

SO I WANTED TO OFFER YOU A MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD BECAUSE THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE HOPE FOR FROM OLIVER.

I LOVE SEEING ALL THESE REPORTS.

WE'RE GOING TO START WITH OUR ODYSSEY MIDDLE SCHOOL REPORT AND HELEN.

THE STUDENT ADMINISTRATIVE AID TO MS. O'ROURKE ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, AT ODYSSEY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

WE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE BOARD OR EXPERIENCES FROM ODYSSEY'S FIRST EVER SCHOOL-WIDE PROJECT.

[BACKGROUND]

>> YES. DR. ANZALONE , THERE IS A MAGAZINE FOR THAT AND WE COME BEARING GIFTS.

WE LEARNED WITH EACH OTHER AND FROM EACH OTHER AND WE REPRESENT TO YOU PROJECT GRYPHON.

PROJECT GRYPHON IS A MAGAZINE ABOUT LIFE IN CAMAS FROM FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT AND OTHER THINGS.

WE'RE ABLE TO DO PROJECT GRYPHON BECAUSE ODYSSEY MIDDLE SCHOOL IS A PROJECT-BASED LEARNING CAMPUS AND IS VERY EXPERIENCED WITH WORKING IN GROUPS.

TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY STUDENTS TOOK PART IN PROJECT GRYPHON AND MANAGED TO MAKE THIS MAGAZINE IN JUST TWO WEEKS.

WE WERE ABLE TO DO THIS BECAUSE APP ODYSSEY MIDDLE SCHOOL, WE WORK IN GROUPS VERY OFTEN AND WE ARE VERY EXPERIENCED IN THAT. THEREFORE WE ARE ABLE TO COMPLETE THIS IN JUST TWO WEEKS.

>> HELLO. I'M KAREN NATY, AND I'M HERE TO TALK TO YOU GUYS ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE WITH PROJECT GRYPHON AS A SIXTH GRADER AND WORKING WITH THE KIDS FROM ALL THE OTHER GRADES.

SO TO START OFF, OBVIOUSLY, THIS WAS A SCHOOL-WIDE PROJECT AND FOR MOST GROUPS THERE WERE ABOUT AN EVEN MIX OF SIXTH, SEVENTH, AND EIGHTH GRADERS.

OBVIOUSLY, MOST OF THE PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW EACH OTHER BUT WE WERE STILL ABLE TO COLLABORATE WITH EACH OTHER ON WHAT MIGHT BE PROBABLY ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS OBVIOUSLY HAS EVER PRODUCED AS OBVIOUSLY IT'S NATURAL MAGAZINE, WE GOT IT PUBLISHED AND EVERYTHING.

BUT WORKING ACROSS GRADES WAS OBVIOUSLY DIFFICULT AT FIRST AS NO ONE REALLY KNEW EACH OTHER AND WE DIDN'T KNOW HOW PEOPLE'S SKILLS WOULD COME INTO PLAY.

BUT IN JUST TWO WEEKS WE WERE ABLE TO CREATE THAT.

>> I'M LEILA RICCI AND I'LL BE TALKING ABOUT HOW IT WAS LIKE TO INTERVIEW SOME OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND HOW IT WAS LIKE TO LEARN FROM THEM.

SO SOME PEOPLE DID THEIR INTERVIEWS OVER PHONE, ZOOM, OR EVEN IN PERSON.

AND WE HAD TO COME UP WITH QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFOREHAND SO WE KNEW WHAT WE WERE GOING TO TALK ABOUT.

PEOPLE WHO GOT INTERVIEWED, FOR EXAMPLE, INCLUDE THE MAYOR OR THE CITY COUNCIL, ART STUDIO OWNERS, AND OTHER MEMBERS FROM OUR COMMUNITY.

AS A STUDENT, IT CAN BE VERY NERVE WRACKING TO TALK TO SOMEONE IN AUTHORITY.

BUT IT REALLY HELPED US WITH OUR PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS AND IT IS GOING TO MAKE US FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN THE FUTURE.

IT PUT US OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONES TO SAY THE LEAST.

BUT IT WAS OVERALL A REALLY GREAT EXPERIENCE WHEN WE GOT TO LEARN FROM ALL OF THESE PEOPLE THAT HAD FASCINATING PROFESSIONS.

I'M HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE WORKING WITH NEW AND DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

IT WAS INTERESTING TO ME, A DIFFERENT PART OF OUR ODYSSEY COMMUNITY AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THEM.

EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE, IF THERE ARE PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT GRADES, PEOPLE FROM OLDER GRADES DIDN'T OVERSHADOW THE YOUNGER STUDENTS.

NOW WE FEEL MORE FREE TO SAY HI TO THEM.

HOW WE LEARN TO COLLABORATE.

WE LEARN TO COLLABORATE BY BECOMING MORE FAMILIAR WITH AND COMFORTABLE WITH EACH OTHER.

THIS HELPED MOVE ALONG THE PROJECT MORE EFFICIENTLY WITH MINIMAL HANDLING.

>> HI, I'M ALLIE AND I'M AN EIGHTH GRADE STUDENT.

AND WHAT IT WAS LIKE WORKING WITH DIFFERENT TEACHERS, IT WAS WORKING WITH DIFFERENT TEACHING STYLES.

SO IT WAS COOL TO WORK, BUT DIFFERENT TEACHERS DIDN'T WORK THE SAME AS YOUR NORMAL TEACHERS.

AND IT WAS DIFFERENT BECAUSE IT WAS NORMAL BECAUSE WE DIDN'T WORK WITH THE SAME GRADE IF OUR TEACHERS, SO IT WAS COOL TO WORK WITH DIFFERENT TEACHERS AND IT WAS COOL WORKING FOR THEM AND FIGURING OUT THE DIFFERENT FEATURES THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW YET.

>> HEY, EVERYONE. I'M MAYA, A SEVENTH GOOD STUDENT.

I'M HERE TO TELL YOU ABOUT A SKILL THAT I ACQUIRED DURING PROJECTS.

I LEARNED HOW TO RESEARCH AND USE THAT RESEARCH TO APPLY TO MY ARTWORK.

AND FOR MORE EXPLANATION, MY JOB IN THE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE POETRY THAT ENCAPTURES SOME OF THE CULTURE IN THE COLLEGE TRIBE.

THIS WAS A VERY USEFUL SKILL TO ACQUIRE AS IT ALTERED THE WAY THAT I TOOK IN INFORMATION AND APPLIED IT TO REGULAR THINGS IN MY LIFE.

LIKE SAY, A WORD PROBLEM IN MATH, I REALLY GOT TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION

AND I WOULD KNOW HOW TO APPLY IT AND THEN HUMANITIES, I REALLY ENJOYED AFTER ACQUIRING THAT SKILL.

SO IT HELPED ME JUST TO TAKE IN INFORMATION AND APPLY IT MORE EFFECTIVELY.

>> HI. I'M ESTHER, I'M AN EIGHTH GRADE STUDENT AT ODYSSEY AND I'M GOING TO BE TALKING TO YOU ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE BEING AN EDITOR AND HAVING A LEADERSHIP ROLE AND WHAT I LEARNED.

I LEARNED A LOT, ESPECIALLY ABOUT OUR SCHOOL AND OUR COMMUNITY OUT OF SCHOOL AND HOW TO BE A LEADER AND ALSO LISTEN TO PEOPLE.

I LEARNED ABOUT HOW OUR SCHOOL IS A COMMUNITY ENOUGH THAT WE CAN STILL PUT GROUPS TOGETHER WITH DIFFERENT GRADES AND STILL CREATE A GREAT PRODUCT THAT CAN SHOWCASE OUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY.

ALSO FOR EVERY STUDENT TO CONTRIBUTE IN A WAY TO CREATE A SCHOOL MAGAZINE THAT HELPS TO SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT DOWNTOWN CANVAS AND EDUCATE PEOPLE ON WHAT WE DO HERE AT ODYSSEY.

THAT'S WHAT I CALL A GREAT PROJECT RIGHT THERE.

ALSO BEING AN EDITOR WAS VERY HECTIC BUT ALSO VERY HELPFUL.

I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE BUT NOT DOING IT FOR THEM.

IT'S EASY TO TAKE OVER.

BUT INSTEAD IT TAUGHT ME TO WAIT AND LISTEN TO SEE WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY AND MAYBE I'LL LEARN SOMETHING AND HELP STEER THEM IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

I THINK PROJECT GRIFFIN HAS TAUGHT US A LOT AS EDITORS, TEACHERS, AND STUDENTS, AND I THINK IT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS.

I REALLY ENJOYED HOW WORK, HOW TO WORK IN GROUPS THAT I'VE, EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THERE AND WE REALLY LEARNED EACH OTHER'S NAMES AND WHAT WE LIKED AND HOW WE CAN COLLABORATE BETTER WITH EACH OTHER.

I REALLY ENJOYED WORKING WITH OLDER PEOPLE AND YOUNGER PEOPLE TO TEACH THEM ALSO WHAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW AND HAVING THE EIGHTH GRADERS TEACHERS WHAT WE DIDN'T KNOW AS WELL.

AND TO REALLY MANAGE OUR TIME ABOUT SINCE ALL OF OUR SCHEDULES DIDN'T MATCH UP TO MANAGE OUR TIME TO MEET PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS IN DIFFERENT AREAS.

I'M THE ADULT GRIFFIN REPRESENTING TODAY.

WHEN I FIRST CAME TO ODYSSEY, I WOULD LOVE TO DO A MULTI-GRADE LEVEL ALL SCHOOL PROJECT.

AND WHEN COVID HAPPENED, THAT PUT THINGS ON THE BACK BURNER, BUT WE DID GET IT OFF FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS PAST YEAR.

AND I THINK MY FRIENDS WHO HAVE REALLY DONE A ELEGANT JOB SPEAKING TO THAT.

BUT I JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ON THE PROCESS DETAILS ON THE BOARD.

ONE OF THE THINGS WE DO AND WE COLLABORATE AS WE MAKE SURE WE GO THROUGH OUR GROUP AGREEMENTS, WHICH IS ON THE TOP LEFT.

SO WE START EACH OF OUR COLLABORATION SESSIONS WITH THAT.

THEN WE BRAINSTORM TOPICS OF INTEREST THAT WHAT WOULD CAMAS BE ABOUT.

AND SO YOU CAN SEE FROM SPORTS, THE PARKS AND TRAILS TO ARCHITECTURE, TO NOTABLE PEOPLE, TO NATIVE HISTORY.

THEN WE ADD SOME EDITOR ASSIGNMENTS IN WHICH OUR STUDENT LEADERS AND OUR EDITORS WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TEAMS TO OVERSEE AND TO PUT TOGETHER THEIR CONTENT INTO ONE PROJECT.

AND OUR CONTENT FORMATS IN GROUPS OF ABOUT FOUR TO SIX STUDENTS.

THERE WAS ALREADY THE BODY COPY, THE MAIN PART OF THE, EACH STUDENT HAD A TWO PAGE SPREAD, IF YOU WILL.

AND PART OF THAT WAS LETTER OR AN ARTICLE OR A REVIEW OR AN INTERVIEW OR AN EXPOSE, AN OPINION PIECE.

AND THEN THERE'S THE COPY PART, THINGS LIKE PHOTOGRAPHS OR POETRY OR AN ADVICE COLUMN AND HOW TWOS.

AND THEN THE SIDEBAR IS BECAUSE EVERY MAGAZINE NEEDS A LITTLE BIT OF LEVITY AS WELL TO IT.

I THINK WHAT SPEAKS TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROGRAM IS IN THAT BOTTOM RIGHT HAND, A STUDENT REFLECTION RESULTS.

AS YOU CAN SEE, ONE BEING THE LOWEST, FOUR BEING THE HIGHEST OF I CREATED SOMETHING THAT MADE ME PROUD.

AND I THINK THAT'S A TESTAMENT TO THE WORK WE DID THERE AS WELL.

I THINK IT ALSO SPEAKS TO THE UNIQUENESS OF ODYSSEY THAT WE HAD THE ABILITY AS A STAFF TO BE VERY FLEXIBLE WITH OUR SCHEDULE ACROSS GRADE LEVELS, AND ALSO THE WILLINGNESS TO BE CREATIVE AND WORK OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF OUR CONTENT AREAS AS WELL TO PRODUCE SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

SO WE VALUE THE SUPPORT OF THE BOARD IN PROJECT BASED LEARNING AND CERTAINLY INVITE YOU TO COME VISIT US AND LEARN ABOUT OTHER WAYS THAT YOU CAN ALSO SUPPORT PROJECT BASED LEARNING.

THE END FOR THE COMMUNITY OUT HERE WE DO HAVE EXTRA COPIES, A FEW EXTRA COPIES IF ANYONE WANTS ONE.

THERE'S A LOT TO BE SAID ABOUT WHAT YOU GUYS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THAT AS ADULTS DEFINITELY NEED TO WORK ON AS WELL.

JUST LEAVING THROUGH IT AND SEEING INTERVIEWS WITH LOOPS, HARDWARE AND THE MAYOR AND HIKING TRAILS, RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND CAN.

IT'S JUST IT'S AMAZING. THEY SHOULD BE LIKE DOWNTOWN AT THE DCA, THE DOWNTOWN CAMPUS ASSOCIATION OFFICER, CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

SERIOUSLY, THIS IS REALLY COOL.

AND WE'RE CONTINUALLY AMAZED EVERY TIME WE GO TO ODYSSEY AND DISCOVERY IN THE WHOLE PBL CAMPUS.

I THINK ADDING ON TO WHAT YOU SAID, I'M ALWAYS AMAZED WHEN I GO AND WE CAN'T WAIT TO BE THERE IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS.

YOU ALL ARE SO GOOD AT TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE WORKING ON, HOW EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED, AND JUST THE WAY YOU ARTICULATE YOURSELF, EVEN JUST IN PASSING WHEN WE'RE THERE.

YOU DO PHENOMENAL WORK AND I HOPE YOU ALL KNOW YOU'RE A PART OF SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL AND WE WANT TO KEEP THIS GOING, WE WANT TO KEEP IT GROWING.

THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO PRACTICE THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND SHARE IDEAS WITH OTHER MIDDLE SCHOOLS ON THINGS THAT THEY HAVE DONE AT THEIR SCHOOL THAT HAVE IMPACTED THEIR SCHOOL, CLIMATE AND CULTURE.

THIS IS LIBERTY, SEVENTH OR EIGHTH TIME ATTENDING THIS EVENT OR IN THE PAST TEN YEAR.

>> UPCOMING SPIRIT WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND THROUGH 6TH, LIBERTY PARTICIPATED UP WITH CHS TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR HOMECOMING SPIRIT WEEK DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER.

ONE WAY TO HELP STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THIS ACTIVITY WAS TO TRY TO GIVE THEM AN EASIER ALTERNATIVE TO THE SPIRIT DAY THEME.

AS AN EXAMPLE, DURING HOMECOMING SPIRIT WEEK, WE HAD A PAJAMA DAY ON MONDAY.

YOU ALTERNATIVE WAS THAT A STUDENT COULD WEAR GRAY.

EACH DAY HAD AN ALTERNATIVE LIKE THIS.

THAT WAS CANVAS SCHOOL COLORS.

THE STUDENT COULD PARTICIPATE IN THIS WAY SO THAT IT WAS MORE COMFORTABLE.

>> LIBERTY'S BLACK THEME WAS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT.

WELL, OVER 100 THAT COMPETING IN OUR DISTRICT TRACK EVENT ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10TH.

WE HAD [INAUDIBLE] FIRST PLACE FINISHES AND SCHOOL RECORDS THIS YEAR.

BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY HAPPENED AT THE SAME TIME [INAUDIBLE].

THE TEAM CONTINUED TO IMPROVE THROUGHOUT THE SEASON.

>> IT'S OCTOBER. LIBERTY IS HAVING A FUNDRAISER TO BRING DESTINATIONS OF NEW SOCKS, NEW UNDERWEAR, NEW DIAPERS AND GENTLY USE COATS, PANTS, SHIRTS, HATS, GLOVES, AND SCARVES TO BE DONATED TO THOSE IN NEED IN OUR AREA.

WE CURRENTLY HAVE OVER 700 ITEMS DONATED AND ARE SEEKING TO GET OVER 1,000 ITEMS DONATED BY THE END OF THE FUNDRAISER, OCTOBER 31ST.

>> WITH OUR NEW SCHEDULE, LIBERTY ASB, HAS DECIDED THAT EACH ONLY RELEASE WILL BE A SPIRIT DAY EACH MONTH.

IT GIVES US STUDENTS A FUN WAY TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS AND FEEL THAT THEY'RE PART OF THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY ON A DAY WHERE THEY ARE ONLY TOGETHER FOR A SHORTER AMOUNT OF TIME.

LAST WEEK ON WEDNESDAY, WE HAD DRESSED LIKE A TEACHER DAY OR WEAR JEANS.

MANY OF THE STAFF USE THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DESELECT STUDENTS, WHICH THE STAFF FOUND EXTREMELY FUNNY.

ON THIS DAY YOU DRESS LIKE ONE OF THESE FAMOUS CELEBRITIES.

FINALLY, FRIDAY IS SPORTS DAY OR WEAR LIBERTY COLORS.

>> DURING THE SPIRIT WEEK, STUDENTS WILL WORK DURING LUNCHES TO COMPLETE OUR POWER OF YOU, STUDENTS CREATE A THEME AND ORDERED LEAVES FOR EVERY STUDENT AND STAFF MEMBER IN OUR BUILDING.

IN THE PAST, STUDENTS HAVE WISHED FOR A CLASSROOM MOVIE DURING LUNCH, BUYING A TEACHER IN THE BASS, PLAYING GAMES WITH STAFF MEMBERS AND MORE.

ASB THEN ASKS TEACHERS AND ASB FAMILIES TO HELP PURCHASE ANY SUPPLIES THAT STUDENTS HAVE ASKED FOR.

ASB GATHERS ALL THE ITEMS, WRAPS THEM, AND DELIVERS THEM TO THE STUDENTS DURING ONE WEEK.

ASB KNOWS THAT NOT ALL STUDENTS CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS IN DECEMBER, AND THAT NOT ALL STUDENTS RECEIVE GIFTS DURING THIS TIME.

THIS IS OUR WAY TO SHOW STUDENTS THAT WE CARE ABOUT THEM IN OUR SCHOOL.

THEY COME INTO THE CLASSROOM WITH A FEELING OF ENTHUSIASM THAT YOU WOULD NEVER SEE IN ANY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL.

HOWEVER, I SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE THE TALENTS OF MY SCHOOL ARE OFTEN OVERSHADOWED BY ITS SMALL STUDENT POPULATION.

MY INCREDIBLE MATH TEACHER, MR. ALANKO, WHO UNFORTUNATELY CANNOT ATTEND TONIGHT, FEELS THE SAME WAY.

MR. ALANKO HAS BEEN A HUGE ADVOCATE FOR SHOWING EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY HOW SKILLED DISCOVERY STUDENTS ARE AS LEARNERS AND AS MATH-ORIENTED THINKERS.

IN THE SPRING OF LAST YEAR, MR. ALANKO FOUND THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A GROUP OF STUDENTS TO A LOCAL MATH COMPETITION AGAINST OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE AREA AT WSU VANCOUVER.

ELEVEN STUDENTS ATTENDED, AND WITHOUT EVEN HAVING AN ORGANIZED MATH CLUB OR TEAM OUR SCHOOL STILL TOOK SECOND PLACE IN ONE OF THE EVENTS.

A STRONG SHOWING, IN MY OPINION, AS OUR SCHOOL WAS WOEFULLY UNPREPARED COMPARED TO THE OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS SUCH AS SKYVIEW AND HOCKINSON, WHO HAD THEIR OWN MATH CLUBS DEDICATED TO PRACTICING FOR THESE KINDS OF COMPETITIONS.

EARLIER THIS YEAR MR. ALANKO WAS AGAIN INVITED TO THIS COMPETITION, BUT THINGS WENT A BIT DIFFERENT; 28 STUDENTS, INCLUDING MYSELF, TOOK THE TIME TO MISS SOME SCHOOL AND GO TO THE COMPETITION.

WE DID THE MATH, OBVIOUSLY.

THAT IS NEARLY 15 PERCENT OF OUR SCHOOL.

THAT'S 300 CHS STUDENTS SKIPPING SOME SCHOOL TO GO TO A COMPETITION.

WE BROUGHT HOME A FEW MORE AWARDS THIS YEAR, INCLUDING FIRST PLACE FOR ONE OF OUR TEAMS. LOGAN ROBINSON, WHO IS STANDING AT MY SIDE, WON FIRST PLACE IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF WASHINGTON.

>> OUR PERFORMANCE AT THOSE TWO MEETS HAS GIVEN OUR SCHOOL A LOT OF PRIDE, BUT WE KNOW WE CAN DO MUCH BETTER.

WHEN I WAS A SOPHOMORE LAST YEAR, MR. ALANKO CONSTANTLY MENTIONED THE IDEA OF FORMING AN ACTUAL MATH CLUB AT DISCOVERY.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS, AND I'VE SPENT THE LAST FEW MONTHS WORKING TOWARDS MAKING THIS HAPPEN.

ALLOW ME TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT WE DO HERE AT DISCOVERY DURING MATH CLUB.

CLUB MEETINGS WOULD OCCUR FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SCHOOL, TWO TIMES A MONTH.

DURING THESE MEETINGS, CLUB MEMBERS WOULD WORK TOGETHER TO SOLVE COMPLEX PROBLEMS THAT REQUIRE A LOT OF DEEP THINKING.

AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE 3D TIC-TAC-TOE PROBLEM.

ESSENTIALLY, YOU HAVE A GAME OF TIC-TAC-TOE THAT'S BEING PLAYED VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY.

THE GOAL OF THIS PUZZLE IS TO SOLVE FOR THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF WINNING POSSIBILITIES FOR EITHER SIDE.

THIS CHALLENGE IS A STRUGGLE FOR EVEN THE GREATEST MATHEMATICIANS.

IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK.

EVEN MR. ALANKO, WHEN WE WORKED ON THIS, STRUGGLED A BIT.

CLUB MEETINGS WOULD ALSO BE UTILIZED TO HELP OUR SCHOOL PRACTICE AND PREPARE FOR MORE LOCAL MATH COMPETITIONS THAN WE'VE EVER BEEN TO BEFORE.

IN FACT, WE'VE ALREADY SIGNED UP AND CONFIRMED OUR SCHOOL FOR MATH CONTEST AT SKYVIEW THAT'S JUST TWO DAYS AWAY.

THEN WITH THAT, WE HAD OUR SPIRIT WEEK, WHICH ALL HAD DIFFERENT OPTIONS SO THAT EVERYONE COULD BE INCLUDED, AND IT HAD A REALLY GOOD TURNOUT.

THEN FINALLY, RIGHT BEFORE HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME, WE HAD 11 OUT OF 13 SCHOOLS REPRESENTED AT THE HALFTIME SHOW.

WE ALSO HAD OUR ROYALTY RUNNING THROUGH WITH TRUCKS, WHICH IS REALLY COOL.

THE SIXTH SENSE WAS THE MOVIE AND IT WAS A SCARY MOVIE THAT WE DID RIGHT AFTER THE FOOTBALL GAME BECAUSE THERE'S A FOOTBALL GAME OVER AT MCKENZIE STADIUM VERSUS UNION.

WE WENT AND HAD A MOVIE NIGHT AFTER IT, AND THEN WE GOT A LOT OF PARTICIPATION, IT ENDED UP TURNING OUT REALLY GREAT.

WE SOLD A LOT OF CONCESSIONS AND I THINK ENDED UP RUNNING OUT OF MOST OF THEM BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE ENDED UP GOING.

IT REALLY ENDED UP BEING A FUN EVENT FOR OUR SCHOOL.

IT ALSO JUST BRIGHTENS THE MOOD WHEN IT'S TOO EARLY TO BE AWAKE SOMETIMES.

OUR GIRL'S SOCCER TEAM AND OUR GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM ARE BOTH UNDEFEATED THIS SEASON, SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO SUPPORT THEM COMING UP POST-SEASON.

WE'RE PLANNING ON DOING ROUTER BUSES TO SUPPORT THEM OFF GOING ONTO DISTRICTS AND THEN HOPEFULLY STATE.

WE HAVE A LOT OF FUN THINGS LIKE SEND-OFF PLAN FOR ALL OF OUR SPORTS TEAMS.

>> WE'VE ALSO APPROVED A COUPLE OF CLUBS THIS YEAR.

WE HAVE THE HAM RADIO CLUB THAT OUR ASB HAS APPROVED, AND THEN ALSO THE TRAIL STEWARDS CLUB, WHICH GOES AROUND CAMAS, INTENDING TO CLEAN UP TRAILS.

THAT HAS BEEN APPROVED BY OUR ASB.

THEN WE ALSO ARE LOOKING INTO QUITE A FEW OTHER CLUBS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY GOING TO BE LIKE WANTING TO.

>> CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL IS A PRETTY BIG DECA.

I BELIEVE THEY HAVE OVER 300 STUDENTS THIS YEAR PARTICIPATING.

THEY DID AN ALL PAWS ON DECK, WHICH IS TO RAISE MONEY IN DOWNTOWN CAMAS AND IT ENDS UP BEING A GREAT TURNOUT.

THEY HAD A LOT OF VENDORS DOWN THERE AND IT WAS JUST A SUPER FUN EVENT.

IN TOTAL, THEY RAISED OVER $12,000.

THEIR DOG MAYOR ARCHIE, RAISED AT $2,675 ALONE, SO IT ENDED UP BEING A REALLY, REALLY GREAT FUNDRAISER FOR DECA.

THEN WE ALSO HAVE A PLAY, MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, WHICH IS COMING UP, AND THEN WINTER SPORTS OBVIOUSLY BEGINNING SOON.

HE SAID HE WAS INVOLVED IN THE VERY BEGINNING WHERE IT WAS A CONVERSATION WHEN HE WAS A POLICE CHIEF BETWEEN THE SUPERINTENDENT MILT DENNISON, WHO THIS BOARDROOM IS NAMED AFTER.

HAS GROWN TO THIS COMMITTEE THAT HAS, WE HAVE THE MAYOR, WE HAVE COUNCIL MEMBERS, WE HAVE OUR FORMER BOARD MEMBER WHO IS NOW THE CITY ADMINISTRATOR, DOUG QUINN.

JUST TALKING ABOUT THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY, EITHER WHAT EDUCATION IS DOING AND HOW IT WILL IMPACT THE CITY, OR WHAT THE CITY IS DOING AND HOW IT WILL IMPACT THE SCHOOLS IS JUST LIKE YOU SAID, A REALLY UNIQUE EXPERIENCE.

THEY WERE BASICALLY DRAGGING THEIR PARENTS AROUND FROM CLASSROOM TO CLASSROOM, EXCITED TO SHOW THE PARENTS WHAT THEY'VE DONE.

TEACHERS WERE ALL THERE AND WE'RE SO EXCITED TO SEE EVERYONE COME THROUGH SITE AND THEN THE DODGEBALL IN THE GYMNASIUM.

THAT WAS FUN TO WATCH THE PARENTS AGAINST THE KIDS.

THE FOOD WAS DONATED OR RATHER WAS ALL DRIVEN BY THE PTA, I BELIEVE, THEY HAD PIZZA OUT FOR THE FAMILY, AND EVERYONE THAT CAME IN GOT PIZZA.

WE CAN DO IT WITHOUT THEM IN THE COMMITTEES AND WHAT THEY BRING BACK TO THE BOARD.

I THINK WE'RE WITHIN PROBABLY $100,000 OF THE APPROVED BUDGET, SO VERY, VERY CLOSE AT THE END OF THE DAY.

THE GOAL WAS TO INTRODUCE MTSS TO OUR SYSTEM IN A WAY THAT EVERYONE COULD ACCESS THAT INFORMATION SO JUST CONNECTING IT WITH STORIES AND LEARNERS AND A VARIETY OF ABILITIES AND DIVERSITY AND VOICES.

THAT'S WHAT THE POINT OF THE WHOLE STAFF FACILITATION OR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING WAS ABOUT.

THEN THE SECOND PART WAS WITH A TEAM OF PEOPLE WE DEVELOPED FOR MODULES FOR SITE-BASED FACILITATION.

THIS WAS, I THINK I HAD MENTIONED IN THE SPRING THIS IS.

THIS WAS THE HOPE AND IT HAPPENED, IT WAS GREAT THAT WE WERE ABLE TO DO IT.

BUT WE CREATED SOME INTERACTIVE LEARNING, SO PRINCIPALS WERE ABLE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THREE OF THE MODULES TO FACILITATE IN THEIR OWN BUILDINGS OR THEIR OWN SCHOOLS IN THE AFTERNOON THAT DAY AND THE FOURTH OPTION WAS FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T SERVE IN A SCHOOL SETTING.

PEOPLE WHO SERVE OUR DISTRICT, BUT MAYBE SERVE STUDENTS INDIRECTLY.

IT WAS FANTASTIC THE AMOUNT OF COLLABORATORS THAT WE HAD ON THAT DAY TO MAKE THAT PROJECT HAPPEN.

THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF POSITIVE FEEDBACK, SO IT'S A HUGE CELEBRATION.

IT WENT REALLY WELL AND NOW WE HAVE TO CONTINUE THAT WORK BECAUSE IT'S NOT OVER SO THERE WAS THAT.

I MENTIONED THE DISTRICT EQUITY TEAM AND OUR FIRST MEETINGS ACTUALLY THIS WEDNESDAY MORNING.

WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE IS ITS REPRESENTATION FROM EACH SCHOOL BUILDINGS SO AN ADMINISTRATOR AND THEN THEY CHOSE ONE OR TWO PEOPLE OR ASKED FOR ONE OR TWO PEOPLE TO JOIN THEM.

OUR GOAL IS TO FOLLOW UP FROM THAT MODULE, THAT EQUITY FORMAT MODULE FOR THE MTSS CONTENT AND CONNECTING A LITTLE BIT DEEPER HOW MTSS AND EQUITY ARE CONNECTED AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE? THAT HELPS US TO GENERATE SOME GOAL AREAS TO WORK ON SO THAT EACH SCHOOL CAN DETERMINE WHAT GOAL THEY'D LIKE TO WORK ON THIS YEAR AND WHAT THOSE ACTION STEPS MIGHT BE TO START WITH.

I MENTIONED LAST YEAR WE WERE WORKING TOWARDS IMPROVING OUR GENDER INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS.

THAT WORK IS ONGOING.

I WAS ABLE TO ADAPT AND MODIFY A GENDER SUPPORT PLAN THAT I SHARED WITH PRINCIPALS AND COUNSELORS IN THE SPRING AND THAT WAS THEIR INITIAL VIEW OF THAT THING.

THERE FIRST READ IT, IF YOU WILL.

BUT WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE USING THAT DOCUMENT OR THAT PLAN OR SUPPORTING IT, NEED TO KNOW HOW BEST TO USE IT.

THERE'S LOTS OF QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW THESE CONVERSATIONS HAPPEN WITH STUDENTS WITH WHOM, WHEN, WHO NEEDS TO BE PRESENT, WHEN DO WE HAVE A GENDER SUPPORT PLAN? I INCLUDED SHARIF, WHO IS OUR MTSS COORDINATOR, AND WE INCLUDED COUNSELORS FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL LEVELS.

WE'RE WORKING TOWARD DEVELOPING PROTOCOLS FOR WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL AND THE SECONDARY LEVEL WITH STUDENTS AND WE'RE STILL SEEING AN INCREASED NEED IN THIS TYPE OF SUPPORT IN OUR SCHOOLS AND IN EDUCATION FOR OUR STAFF.

THIS IS ONGOING.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT EVENTUALLY IF YOU HAVE A SYSTEM THAT'S SUPPORTIVE OF ALL STUDENTS, YOU WOULDN'T NECESSARILY NEED GENDER SUPPORT PLANS, BUT WE'RE STILL SEEING THAT NEED SO HERE WE ARE.

IN ADDITION TO THAT SYSTEMS WORK, I JUST WANTED TO RECOGNIZE THAT WE STILL ARE HAVING INSTANCES OF HARM IN OUR SCHOOLS.

THESE THINGS TAKE PLACE REGULARLY.

THIS IS ALSO THE WORLD THAT WE LIVE IN AND NOT SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO EVER COMPLETELY PREVENT.

SO I DO WORK QUITE OFTEN WITH OUR SCHOOLS RESPONDING TO SOME INCIDENTS OF HARM.

SO FAR THIS YEAR, I'VE SEEN ATHLETICS, CLASSROOMS, AND STAFF RELATED TO EQUITY AND SOME THINGS THAT ARE COMING UP AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL ARE, THIS IS ONGOING TOO IS THE, HOW DO WE CELEBRATE DIFFERENT HOLIDAYS AND CULTURES AND WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE TO BE CULTURALLY INCLUSIVE, REPRESENTATIVE OF OUR COMMUNITY, AND RESPECTFUL? THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I'M WORKING ON REGULARLY, BUT THAT'S OFTEN THOSE THINGS THAT POP-UP AND REQUIRE A QUICK RESPONSE OF SOME KIND SO THAT'S STILL ONGOING IN OUR SCHOOLS AND A LOT OF WORKING ONE-ON-ONE WITH OUR PRINCIPALS, WHICH IS AWESOME TO HAVE RELATIONSHIPS THAT PRINCIPALS ARE ABLE TO REACH OUT, ASK FOR SUPPORT.
