GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE.

WELCOME TO OUR DECEMBER 11TH WORKSHOP.

IT'S WE'RE GETTING STARTED HERE A LITTLE BIT LATE BECAUSE WE WERE OVER VIEWING OUR THE MAGNET PROGRAMS SYMPOSIUM BUT WE ARE READY TO GO NOW, AND I BELIEVE THE FIRST ITEM ON OUR AGENDA FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS OUR STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE AND LISA GRESETH.

IT'S EVER SO HARD TO LEAVE THE MAGNET SYMPOSIUM EACH YEAR WHEN THIS HAPPENS, BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH PHENOMENAL LEARNING GOING ON, AND OF COURSE. MUCH OF THAT IS WHAT CONNECTS BACK TO THE STRATEGIC PLANS THAT WE CREATE TOGETHER.

SO IT'S FITTING THAT WE'RE ALSO TALKING ABOUT THE STRATEGIC PLAN NOW.

IT'S AN UPDATE TODAY, AND WE HAVE AN ACTIVITY PLANNED SO THAT WE CAN ALSO GET SOME INPUT FROM YOU ON THE PART OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN THAT WE'RE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW, AS WELL AS WHAT THE NEXT STEPS ARE THAT LEAD TOWARD YOUR REVIEW AND ADOPTION OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN.

SO WHAT HAVE WE BEEN DOING SINCE THE LAST TIME WE MET? SO IN THE SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER WINDOW, WE'VE CONTINUED TO WORK ON ONE OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN GOAL AREAS, WHICH IS AROUND BUILDING MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS, AND SO THAT WORK CONTINUES DAILY AND IN ALL SCHOOLS, AS THAT IS A LARGE UNDERTAKING WITH MANY PARTS AND PIECES AND LOTS OF LEARNING FOR ADULTS ALONG THE WAY TO PROVIDING LEARNING SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS IN ADDITION, WE HAD A BOARD WORKSHOP ON OCTOBER 9TH THAT FOCUSED ON THE ELEMENTARY CONTINUOUS GROWTH, AND THAT WHILE WE KNOW THE CONTENT FOCUS FOR ELEMENTARY IS LITERACY THE WORK WE'RE DOING IS SYSTEMS WORK, WHICH CONNECTS BACK TO THAT MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM.

SO THE LEARNING THAT TEACHERS ARE ENGAGING IN WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS AND CONTINUING THIS YEAR AND NEXT YEAR IS ON THE SCIENCE OF READING, OR HOW DO WE INSTRUCT STUDENTS AND SUPPORT THEM IN LEARNING TO READ WITH A GOAL THAT ALL STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO READ BY THE END OF THIRD GRADE? IN ADDITION, WE JOINED THE CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NOVEMBER 6TH AND INTRODUCED THE STRATEGIC PLAN GOAL AREAS TO THEM, FOCUSING ON MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS, AND THEN WE HAD A PROTOCOL THAT ENGAGED THAT GROUP IN THINKING ABOUT FAMILY ENGAGEMENT.

SO WHAT IS GLOWS AND GROWS AGAIN? SO WHAT'S WORKING WELL THAT WE NEED TO CONTINUE? WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT WE COULD BE DOING BETTER AND WHAT ARE THEIR HOPES, AND SO WE HAVE THAT AS AN INPUT ALSO BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS ARE SUCH A A CORE OF WHAT ALLOWS US TO PROVIDE AND SERVE THE STUDENTS AS WE DO, AND THEN ALSO, WE'VE BEEN WORKING HARD ON THE CREATION OF A DRAFT OF GUIDING STATEMENTS, WHICH I'LL SHOW TO YOU IN JUST A MINUTE.

SO ONE OF THE CHALLENGES THAT WE'VE HAD IN THIS ROUND IS WE'VE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE IS THAT THERE WAS A LOT OF WORK THAT HAPPENED PRIOR TO CREATE THE NEXT STRATEGIC PLAN, WHICH THE YEAR WOULD HAVE BEEN 2020 TO 2025 AND SO WE'RE STILL THERE, RIGHT? WE'RE STILL WITHIN THAT WINDOW.

SO A LOT OF THE CHALLENGES OF THIS HAS BEEN REVISITING WHAT WAS ALREADY ESTABLISHED AND THEN SAYING, THROUGH THE LENS OF WHAT WE'VE EXPERIENCED IN THE LAST YEARS ACROSS THE WORLD, WITHIN OUR COMMUNITIES, WITHIN WHAT'S BEING LEARNED IN NEUROSCIENCE AND TEACHING AND LEARNING, WHAT CHANGES ABOUT WHAT WAS ALREADY PUT ON PAPER, AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT CAME UP WAS THE NEED TO REVISIT THE MISSION AND VISION STATEMENTS, AND SO TODAY, WHAT WE HAVE FOR YOU IS A DRAFT OF THE MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT THIS THESE DRAFTS WERE FORMED IN FROM INPUT FROM OUR COMMUNITY, BEGINNING WITH THE THOUGHT EXCHANGE.

THAT WAS DECEMBER 2022 AND CONTINUING THROUGH FOCUS GROUPS AND THEN INTO THIS FALL, WHERE WE USED A 'FIVE WHY' PROTOCOL, WHICH JUST HAS US GO DEEPER AND DEEPER INTO WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO? WHY DO WE DO THAT? SO TRY TO GET AT THE CORE OR THE ESSENCE OF WHAT IS THE BUSINESS OF OUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT IS THE VISION THAT WE SEE THAT WE WOULD ALL BE PROUD TO SERVE IN A SYSTEM THAT COULD ACHIEVE THIS? SO IN JUST A MOMENT, YOU'RE GOING TO GET AN 11 BY 17 SHEET OF PAPER ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE.

IT'S GOING TO HAVE THE DRAFT MISSION, VISION, VALUES AND GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND STUDENT OUTCOMES.

ON THIS, IT WILL SHOW YOU WHAT'S NEW AND WHAT WAS PART OF THE ORIGINAL WORK.

SO FOR EXAMPLE ALL EXCEPT ONE OF THE VALUES COME FROM THE 2025 DRAFT STRATEGIC PLAN, BUT WHAT WE NOTICED WAS IT'S ONE THING TO SAY A VALUE SUCH AS SAFE AND HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS, BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN IN TERMS OF WHAT WE DO?

SO THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES ACCOMPANY EACH OF THE VALUES IS A WAY TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THIS VALUE MEANS THIS.

DO YOU REMEMBER THAT? AND IT WAS LIKE THEY HAD.

IT WAS LIKE, WHAT IS THEIR NORTH STAR THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO GET TO AND SO MY QUESTION HERE IS WHAT IS OUR, AND MAYBE THAT'S WHAT OUR MOTTO IS.

RIGHT I DON'T KNOW, BUT THAT BUT THEY HAD A THEY DID A GREAT JOB WITH THEIR STRATEGIC PLAN, AND THEY KEPT TALKING ABOUT THIS NORTH STAR, AND EVERYONE KNEW WHAT IT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS SIMPLE. I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS, BUT YEAH, EVERYBODY ELSE DID.

I BROUGHT UP, I WROTE DOWN THE FUTURE READY AS WELL, JUST IN THAT WE'RE THE WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS VERY STUDENT FOCUSED, WHICH IS GREAT, AND THEY INFORM WHAT WE DO, BUT WE ALSO NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE GUIDED BY WHAT THEY NEED TO KNOW OUT IN THE WORLD, RIGHT? DO WE HAVE THE RIGHT PATHWAYS IN PLACE? ARE WE CONNECTING THEM WITH REAL WORLD SKILLS THAT THEY WILL NEED IN THE MARKET AND I KNOW THAT CHANGES ALL THE TIME AND WE'RE PREPARING OUR THIRD GRADERS FOR WORLD.

WE DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE BUT SOMEHOW BUILDING IN AND THAT'S WHAT I REALLY LOVED ABOUT THE FUTURE READY TAGLINE THAT WE HEARD AT WSSDA.

IS THAT IT? REALLY? WE ARE PREPARING THEM TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE FUTURE, RIGHT, BY DOING ALL OF THESE THINGS, AND THE PROGRAMS THAT WE DEVELOP ARE NOT JUST GUIDED BY STUDENT STRENGTHS, NEEDS AND PASSIONS, BUT THE WORLD AROUND US AND WHAT THE WORLD IS GOING TO REQUIRE OF THESE KIDS, WHAT THEY NEED TO KNOW, NOT JUST BECAUSE THE KIDS, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY DON'T KNOW.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF I STILL KNOW WHAT MY PASSIONS ARE BUT IN HIGH SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I CERTAINLY DIDN'T, AND SO WE'RE MAKING ASSUMPTIONS THAT WE KNOW, OH, THE KIDS KNOW WHAT THEIR PASSIONS ARE. SO WE'LL HELP YOU DEVELOP THOSE.

WE'VE GOT TO HELP THEM FIND THEIR PASSIONS, AND I DON'T KNOW, AND JUST REALLY THAT WE'RE GOING TO HELP.

DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE READY FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY WANT TO DO.

I FEEL LIKE EVERYBODY IN THE DISTRICT, WHETHER YOU'RE A STAFF MEMBER, A STUDENT, A COMMUNITY MEMBER, WHATEVER, THEY KNOW THAT, BUT DOES EVERYBODY THEY KNOW THE MODEL, BUT DO THEY REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS? SO WE ALMOST NEED LIKE A LITTLE KIND OF AN LIKE WHATEVER MOTTO WE SETTLE ON THERE KIND OF ALMOST NEEDS TO BE LIKE A LITTLE ELEVATOR PITCH THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS.

LIKE, WHAT DOES THAT REALLY MEAN? WHICH IS WHY I LOVE THAT TAGLINE, FUTURE READY THAT THE DISTRICT SUMNER HAD, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY CALLED THEIR STRATEGIC PLAN WAS CALLED FUTURE READY, AND THEY THEY REFER TO IT AS THAT, AND LIKE, THAT'S THE NAME OF THIS PLAN, AND SO WHATEVER WE LAND ON IT SHOULD BE THE, THE NAME OF THIS, THAT'S THE NAME OF THE PLAN.

THAT'S WHAT THIS ALL ALIGNS UP TO, AND THAT'S OUR GOAL AS A DISTRICT.

SOMETHING THAT'S EASY, LIKE THAT'S QUICK.

I SAW SAFE AND HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, AND THEN I SAW THE WORD INCLUSIVE LEARNING IN THAT ONE.

SO I FEEL LIKE THERE'S SOME THINGS THAT JUST NEED LIKE SIMILARITIES, SOME SYMMETRY, LIKE TIES IN FOR, LIKE THOSE BRAIN CONNECTORS, LIKE INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT, AND THEN I CAN GO HERE AND I UNDERSTAND BECAUSE IT COULD BE TO CREATE A SAFE, HEALTHY AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT, AND THAT MAKES SENSE BECAUSE WE BUILD A POSITIVE, SAFE, WELCOMING, INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

SO SOMETHING SOMETHING.

THE ONLY OTHER THING I WAS GOING TO ADD TO THAT I HAD ONE OTHER LITTLE THING THAT WAS JUST I'D LIKE TO SEE SOMETHING IN THE TEACHERS AND TEACHING AND STAFF, TEACHERS AND STAFF, JUST ABOUT GROWING LEADERS AT EVERY LEVEL AND, AND REALLY FOCUSING ON THAT KIND OF RETENTION AND BUILDING THROUGH THAT WAY WE ALSO HAD A CONVERSATION ABOUT DOES DOES BUDGET OR ALLOCATION OF RESOURCES PLAY INTO ANY OF THIS? SO AS THE NEXT STEPS COME OUT, WHICH IS THE ACTION PLAN, THE MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, LISA.

WE'LL LOOK TO VARIOUS LEADERS WITHIN OUR CABINET, WITHIN OUR DISTRICT WHO WILL TAKE THE LEAD ROLE, AND THEN TIED TO THAT WILL BE THE RESOURCE

I FELT LIKE A LOT OF THE TIMES PEOPLE CAN TELL YOU THAT HOW THEY WEREN'T SEEN OR SERVED, AND SO THOSE WORDS SEEM LIKE.

WORDS WE USE OR THAT ARE OUT THERE TAGLINES, BUT WE NEED TO DELIVER ON THAT, AND OF COURSE, THAT'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE HARDER BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT NEEDS AND EVERYONE YOU KNOW ARE SEEN DIFFERENTLY AND SERVED DIFFERENTLY SO THAT WAS MY I MEAN, I GUESS IF WE COULD CHANGE IT, I WOULD, BUT IF WE'RE KEEPING IT, WE'RE KEEPING IT, BUT I WOULD WANT TO HAVE MORE THINGS BACK UP THAT STATEMENT.

MORE EXAMPLES, MORE WAYS THAT SOMEBODY COULD SAY, OH YES, I WAS SEEN AND SERVED THAT DAY OR HOWEVER.

OKAY AND THEN THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS SAID ONE OF THE THINGS I FEEL LIKE SOMETIMES THAT'S MISSING IN ALL OF THESE THINGS, NOT JUST THIS THING, BUT LIKE TEACHING KIDS.

IT'S ALWAYS CENTERED ON THE KIDS, BUT I ALSO FEEL LIKE AS ADULTS, WE ALSO NEED TO BE SOMEHOW EXAMPLES FOR THESE KIDS BECAUSE THEY CAN ALSO LEARN FROM US LIKE WE ARE RIGHT HERE. UM TEACHERS ARE IN THE CLASSROOM.

THEY ARE AN EXAMPLE OF UM, POSITIVE FEEDBACK AND CARE, KINDNESS.

SO OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, OUR ASB HAS BEEN DOING SOME GREAT THINGS FOR OUR SCHOOL AND THE GREATER CAMAS COMMUNITY, AND WE'RE EXCITED TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU.

FOR STARTERS, WE ENDED OUR STUFF THE BUS DONATION EVENT WITH A TOTAL OF 1469 POINTS.

BECAUSE WE'RE SUCH A SMALL SCHOOL, THAT MEANS WE AVERAGED ABOUT SEVEN AND A HALF ITEMS PER STUDENT, WHICH ALL GOES TO A GREAT CAUSE.

ON NOVEMBER 4TH WE ALSO HAD OUR FALL HARVEST HOP DANCE, AND WE HAD A PRETTY GOOD ATTENDANCE RATE OF 40% OF OUR STUDENTS, AND THEN, SPEAKING OF DANCES COMING UP, WE HAVE OUR WINTER DANCE.

THE DATE HASN'T BEEN ANNOUNCED YET, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT'S IN FEBRUARY AND IT'S OUR FORMAL DANCE FOR THE YEAR THAT'S NOT PROM, SO IT'S OPEN TO ALL OF OUR GRADE LEVELS WE'VE ALSO BEEN DOING A COUPLE OTHER THINGS TO KEEP OUR STUDENTS ENGAGED WITH THEIR PEERS.

WE JUST APPROVED FUND REQUESTS TO IMPROVE OUR PING PONG TABLES AND MAKE SOME CORNHOLE BOARDS SO THAT STUDENTS CAN INTERACT WITH THEIR FRIENDS DURING LUNCH AND LASTLY, WE RECENTLY APPROVED ANOTHER CLUB DISCOVERY'S GETTING OUR OWN GEN EARTH CLUB, AND THEY HOPE TO MAINTAIN OUR BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS AS WELL AS SOME OTHER FANTASTIC PROJECTS, AND I'M SURE THEY'LL BE HERE AT NEXT MEETING TO GET THAT APPROVED BY YOU GUYS.

SO CAMAS KIND OF TOOK IT OVER, WHICH WAS REALLY EXCITING SO FIRST WE KIND OF HAD A CAROLING NIGHT AROUND THE DOROTHY FOX AREA WHERE WE WENT AND CAROLED TO A BUNCH OF HOUSES AND ASKED FOR DONATIONS, AND WE RECEIVED A LOT OF CANS, AND PEOPLE WERE REALLY HAPPY TO DONATE.

SO THAT WAS HELPFUL TO COLLECT MORE FOOD WE HAD A FIRST PERIOD CLASS COMPETITION, AND THE CLASS THAT WON CAME WITH US TO PICK UP ALL THE FOOD FROM ALL THE SCHOOLS ON DECEMBER 1ST, WHICH WAS REALLY COOL.

IT WAS NOT IDEAL, AND IT WAS REALLY, REALLY DIFFICULT, AND THEY DIDN'T GET TO COME ON CAMPUS AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL UNTIL FEBRUARY 2021, AND THEN ON CAMPUS, THEY GOT TO SIT FOR THREE HOURS IN THE LIBRARY WITH ME, BECAUSE WE HAD TO WORRY ABOUT HAVING THE RIGHT NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN OUR CAFETERIA FOR EATING LUNCH.

SO WE HAD A REALLY, REALLY LONG STUDY HALL, AND SO I GOT TO KNOW THEM REALLY WELL.

WE PLAYED A LOT OF GAMES, WE DID A LOT OF TALKING, AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT STARTING FRESHMAN YEAR HIGH SCHOOL, WITH THAT KIND OF START AND COMING TO WHERE THEY HAVE COME THREE AND A HALF YEARS LATER IS REALLY A TESTAMENT OF WHAT THEY ARE, WHO THEY ARE AS PEOPLE AND AS STUDENTS, AND THEY'RE REALLY INCREDIBLE.

SO I WANT TO SAY I HAVE IT'S BEEN SUCH A JOY WORKING WITH YOU GUYS, AND YOU GET TO SEE SOME OF JUST A GLIMPSE OF THEIR EXPERIENCE OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS, AND AS ALWAYS, WE COULD NOT DO WHAT WE DO WITHOUT YOU.

SO FOR MY INTERNSHIP, I WENT TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND I WORKED AT VENTURA COUNTY VASCULAR CENTER.

SO STARTING AT CAMAS, I MADE MY WAY DOWN TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

I MADE THIS CUTE LITTLE EDIT.

SO AT VENTURA COUNTY VASCULAR CENTER, WE WORKED ON THE VASCULAR HEALTH, SO ARTERIES AND VEINS, AND I TOOK A SPECIAL FOCUS TO A DISEASE CALLED PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE, WHICH IS THE CLOTTING AROUND YOUR BODY.

THIS IS MY MENTOR, DOCTOR SYDNEY GUO, AND THEN ON THE RIGHT IS ME ON MY FIRST DAY OF OPERATIONS, I GOT TO SIT IN ON.

SO HERE'S THE VASCULAR SYSTEM.

RIGHT, AND THEN HERE ARE SOME PERIPHERAL CLOTS THESE LITTLE WHITE DOTS.

SO TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT THESE CLOTS IS WHAT I WAS DOING FOR MY INTERNSHIP.

PRETTY MUCH WHEN THESE CLOTS GROW PATIENTS RUN A HIGH RISK OF AMPUTATIONS, HEART ATTACKS, STROKES AND PULMONARY EMBOLISMS, WHICH OCCUR WHEN A CLOT REACHES THE LUNGS AND IT PREVENTS OXYGENATION OF BLOOD AND OFFICIATES.

SO TO PREVENT THIS VASCULAR SURGEONS, WHAT THEY DO IS THEY INSERT A BALLOON INTO THE VEINS AND THE ARTERIES WHERE THESE CRITICAL PLAQUE BUILDUPS ARE, AND THEY BLOW UP THE BLOW UP THE BALLOON IN ORDER TO PUSH THIS PLAQUE TO THE SIDE, OPENING UP THE VESSEL SO MORE OXYGEN CAN FLOW.

THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS AFTER 6 TO 12 MONTHS, THE VEINS RECONSTRUCT, AND THEN THEY HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE BACK UNDER THE KNIFE FOR ANOTHER PROCEDURE.

SO TAKING THIS INTO ACCOUNT, I LOOKED INTO DRUG COATED BALLOONS.

IT'S THE SAME EXACT PROCESS OF AS THESE BALLOONS.

HOWEVER, THEY'RE COATED WITH A CANCER TREATMENT DRUG, WHICH PREVENTS THESE THE CELLS FROM RE-GROWING.

SO FOR MY SAMPLE SIZE, I HAD A PRETTY SMALL SAMPLE SIZE OF 12 PATIENTS, AND THEY ALL FOLLOWED FELL INTO A CERTAIN CRITERIA.

THEY WERE THEY HAD PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE, AND THEY HAD A PROCEDURE DONE USING THESE DRUG COATED BALLOONS WITHIN THE PAST 12 MONTHS.

SO FOLLOWING STATISTICAL ANALYSIS, I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THESE BALLOONS, THIS IS WHAT ONE OF THOSE VASCULAR BALLOONS LOOKS LIKE WE'RE GOOD.

THEY WERE GOOD.

THEY HAD AN ENDURING EFFECT ON THE VASCULAR HEALTH OF THESE PATIENTS.

SO SEEN HERE IS A PICTURE DURING ONE OF THE OPERATIONS AND I FEEL LIKE THIS PICTURE RIGHT HERE REALLY ENCAPSULATES MY INTERNSHIP, BUT MORE SO ENCAPSULATES MY EXPERIENCE THAT I'VE HAD IN MAGNET.

THE ENTIRE INTERNSHIP WAS VERY INTERACTIVE.

I FELT AS THOUGH AS A MEDICAL STUDENT MY MENTOR, DOCTOR GUO, I'D BE ASKED QUESTIONS DURING THE OPERATIONS AND I WAS ALMOST A PART, ALMOST LIKE A NURSE DURING THESE OPERATIONS, AND TO AN EXTENT, IT'S LIKE MAGNET THE WAY THIS INTERACTIVE AND IT BUILDS ON EACH OTHER, AND I MEAN STARTING MY MAGNET, STARTING MAGNET FRESHMAN YEAR, ESPECIALLY WITH COVID, AS MISS [INAUDIBLE] SAID, IT WAS DIFFERENT, AND TRUTHFULLY EIGHTH GRADE WHEN WE TOOK OUR TEST TO GET INTO MAGNET, I REALLY RESENTED THE IDEA OF DOING MAGNET.

I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY HAS HEARD THAT BEFORE, BUT I REALLY DID, AND I MEAN, THEY ALWAYS SAY, LISTEN TO YOUR MOM BECAUSE SHE KNOWS WHAT'S BEST.

[CHUCKLING] SO THAT'S WHY I'M HERE, AND I HONESTLY THINK THAT DOING MAGNET WAS THE BEST DECISION I HONESTLY MADE IN MY ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL CAREER, AND IF I WERE TO DO IT AGAIN, I WOULDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

I MEAN, MAGNET, ESPECIALLY WITH COVID I BUILT SUCH A TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY WITH ALL MY FRIENDS, AND WE WERE CONSTANTLY PUSHING EACH OTHER TO BE BETTER, DO BETTER, BUT IT WAS ALWAYS FUN AND INVITING.

SEEN ON THE LEFT IS, I BELIEVE, MY FIRST DAY OF HYBRID LEARNING FRESHMAN YEAR.

SO EVERYBODY MASKED UP AND THEN ABOVE THAT, THAT'S MY SOPHOMORE RESEARCH GROUP.

MADDIE, WHO YOU WILL SEE MOMENTARILY WAS IN THAT, AND IT WAS A LOT OF FUN.

ALL YEAR, WE WERE WORKING ON PHYSICAL THERAPY AND IT WAS LOOKING INTO BALANCE, AND THEN EVERY YEAR, AS WE HAD EARLIER TODAY A SYMPOSIUM, AS YOU SEE IN THE BOTTOM WITH MY FRIEND JOSH, AND THEN ON THE FAR RIGHT IS ANOTHER RESEARCH PROJECT THAT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED BECAUSE WE WERE LIGHTING STUFF ON FIRE, BUT WE WERE REALLY AT THE AT THE ROOT OF IT.

WE WERE LOOKING AT THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY, WHICH AGAIN, WITH MAGNET, IT'S SCIENCE AND IT'S ENGINEERING, BUT IT'S A LOT OF FUN AND WE'RE TAKING THE FUN OUT OF THAT.

SO I ACTUALLY COMPLETED A FIVE WEEK INTERNSHIP AT THE PEACEHEALTH ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY LAB.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS, NEITHER DID I WHEN I STARTED.

[CHUCKLING] SO BASICALLY IT IS A LAB ABOVE THE E.R.

AT THE PEACEHEALTH HOSPITAL THAT TAKES DIFFERENT TISSUE SAMPLES FROM PATIENTS AND ANALYZES THEM FOR DISEASE PATTERNS, MOSTLY CANCER, BUT A LOT OF OTHER DISEASES AS WELL.

MY FIRST WEEK IN THE LAB WAS FASCINATING TO ME.

ONE THING THAT MAGNET HAS GIVEN ME IS A DEEP LOVE OF LEARNING IN GENERAL.

SO THAT FIRST WEEK WHERE I GOT TO LEARN ALL THE BEHIND THE SCENES PROCESSES LIKE THE CUTTING OF TISSUES, THE PRESERVING THEM, PREPARING THEM FOR PATHOLOGISTS TO READ WAS FASCINATING TO ME HOWEVER, THE FIRST THING THAT I ACTUALLY GOT REALLY GOOD AT AT THE HOSPITAL WAS SENDING EMAILS.

SO SHOCKINGLY, AS A STUDENT, WE DON'T SEND THAT MANY, AND PREPARING AN INTERNSHIP IN A HOSPITAL FOR A 17 YEAR OLD WAS MORE DIFFICULT THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE SO A HUGE THANK YOU TO ABE AND MY PARENTS FOR COACHING ME ON THAT PART OF THE INTERNSHIP.

ONCE THE BALL GOT ROLLING, HOWEVER, IT GOT A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

I GOT TO SPEND A WEEK SHADOWING THE HEAD PATHOLOGIST.

HER NAME IS DOCTOR CAMILLA ALLEN.

SHE WAS A PHENOMENAL TEACHER, SO SHE SPENT THAT WEEK WITH ME SHOWING ME THE DIFFERENCES IN BLOOD SAMPLES WITH AND WITHOUT LEUKEMIA, SKIN SAMPLES WITH AND WITHOUT MELANOMA, AND A

WHOLE HOST OF OTHER ORGANS AND THEIR DISEASES, AND WHAT SHE LOOKS FOR IN THEM.

AT THE END OF THAT WEEK, WE MET ON ZOOM TO DISCUSS A RESEARCH PROJECT THAT I COULD ACTUALLY COMPLETE AT THE HOSPITAL.

WHAT WE DECIDED ON WAS A RESEARCH PROJECT RESEARCHING A HOSPITAL POLICY THAT HAD BEEN IMPLEMENTED AT THIS HOSPITAL AND SEVERAL AROUND THE NATION.

SO THE TISSUE SAMPLES THAT ARE TAKEN FROM PATIENTS OVER THE WEEKEND ACTUALLY SPEND THAT WEEKEND SITTING IN A FRIDGE, AND WHAT IS VERY APPROPRIATELY NAMED THE GROSS ROOM.

ON MONDAY MORNING, THE LAB TECHS COME BACK IN AND PUT THEM ON A PRESERVATIVE CALLED FORMALIN, BUT THE SAMPLES THAT ARE TAKEN DURING THE WEEK ARE PUT ON THAT FORMALIN WITHIN 1 TO 2 HOURS OF BEING TAKEN FROM THE PATIENT.

SO WE WANTED TO LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BETWEEN THE DECAY OF THOSE SAMPLES THAT ARE TAKEN AND WAIT THAT 48 HOUR PERIOD AND THOSE THAT ARE TAKEN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY TO DO THAT. I WORKED WITH ANOTHER PATHOLOGIST, DOCTOR SINGH.

WE TOOK 12 GALLBLADDER SAMPLES, ONE OF WHICH WAS PRESERVED WITHIN 23 MINUTES OF BEING REMOVED, WHICH IS A VERY QUICK TURNAROUND AND THE OTHERS, WHICH HAD TO WAIT AT LEAST 48 HOURS OVER EITHER A WEEKEND OR A HOLIDAY.

WHAT WE FOUND WAS THAT OF THE 12, SEVEN OF THE SAMPLES WERE STARTING TO SHOW SOME SIGNS OF DECAY, BUT WERE STILL READABLE, BUT MAYBE WOULD GET A SECOND OPINION JUST TO BE SURE.

HOWEVER, ONE OF THE SAMPLES, ACTUALLY THE VERY LAST ONE WE LOOKED AT HAD DECAYED SO FAR THAT THE PATHOLOGIST COULD NO LONGER READ IT.

SO ON THE RIGHT, WHAT YOU SEE HERE IS A WELL PRESERVED GALLBLADDER SAMPLE, WHERE YOU CAN SEE ALL THE DIFFERENT LAYERS, AND THE PURPLE DOTS, WHICH ARE THE NUCLEI WHICH WE USE FOR DIAGNOSES. HOWEVER, ON THE LEFT YOU SEE ALMOST NONE OF THAT.

YOU SEE A LOT OF WHITE TISSUE, SOME WISPY PINK STUFF, BUT NOTHING THAT CAN REALLY BE USED FOR A DIAGNOSIS.

IN THAT CASE, ANOTHER SAMPLE WOULD HAVE TO BE TAKEN FROM THE PATIENT, WHICH OBVIOUSLY IS DETRIMENTAL TO PATIENT CARE AND WOULD BACK UP THE PROCESS AND CAUSE A LOT MORE STRESS AND EVERYTHING FOR THE PATIENT.

SO THE PATHOLOGIST AND I WERE BOTH SHOCKED TO SEE THIS DIFFERENCE IN A HOSPITAL POLICY THAT'S BEEN IMPLEMENTED AROUND THE NATION FOR SO LONG, AND WE AGREED THAT MORE RESEARCH DOES NEED TO BE DONE WITH MEASURING DIFFERENT ORGANS TO SEE IF IT PRODUCES THE SAME RESULT, AND IF IT DOES, THEN OBVIOUSLY HOSPITAL POLICY WOULD ALSO HAVE TO CHANGE SLIGHTLY TO GET THOSE LAB TECHS IN OVER THE WEEKEND.

SO WE DON'T HAVE THIS DELAY PERIOD AND THE DECAY SHOWN HERE.
