[1. REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - 5:30 PM]
WELCOME TO OUR TUESDAY, MAY 28TH SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.WE'RE USUALLY ON MONDAYS, BUT BECAUSE OF THE HOLIDAY YESTERDAY.
IT'S NOT TOO OFTEN THEY FALL ON A TUESDAY.
ALSO, I JUST WANT TO POINT OUT THAT OUR PRESIDENT COREY MCENRY IS NOT HERE TONIGHT.
HE IS REHEARSING FOR AN UPCOMING CONCERT.
HE SENDS HIS APOLOGIES FOR NOT BEING HERE.
WITH THAT, WOULD YOU ALL RISE FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE LED BY ERICA COX.
NEXT, I WILL READ THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GEOGRAPHICAL REGION OF CAMAS IS LOCATED ON THE ANCESTRAL AND TERRITORIAL LANDS OF THE CHINOOK AND COWLITZ PEOPLE AND THAT THE CHINOOK ARE STILL FIGHTING TO BE FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBE ON THEIR OWN LAND.
NEXT, WE'LL MOVE ON TO SOME FUN STUFF.
[2. MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD(S)]
WE HAVE THE MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARDS.I'LL HAND IT OVER TO DR. ANZALONE TO START US OFF WITH THOSE.
>> GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. HAPPY TUESDAY.
THANK YOU TO THE BOARD FOR BEING HERE AND ALL OF YOU AS WELL.
SO THREE MILL TOWN PRIDES TONIGHT.
YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE A PACKED HOUSE, SO A LOT OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND SUPPORT, SO EXCITING NIGHT.
I WANT TO START OFF WITH THIS FIRST GENTLEMAN WHO'S HERE.
I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU KNOW GARY ABRAHAMSEN, BUT GARY IS HERE.
GARY, WOULD YOU MIND COMING UP? [APPLAUSE] LIFELONG CAMASTONIAN, CAMAS GRADUATE.
GARY, IF I MAY, I JUST WANTED TO SHARE A FEW THINGS OF WHY WE SELECTED GARY FOR A MILL TOWN PRIDE TONIGHT.
TONIGHT, WE HAVE THE DISTINCT PLEASURE OF CELEBRATING AN INCREDIBLE MILESTONE WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.
IT'S NOT EVERY DAY THAT WE HAVE A WORLD CLASS MARATHONER AMONG US.
BUT NETWORK ENGINEER HERE IN CAMAS, GARY ABRAHAMSEN HAS MADE THAT A REALITY.
GARY'S JOURNEY BEGAN WITH A SIMPLE BLOCK WALL AND ESCALATED TO CONQUERING ALL SIX ABBOTT WORLD MARATHON MAJORS, EARNING HIM THE RARE SIX STAR FINISHER MEDAL.
HIS STORY IS ONE OF TRUE GRIT AND SNEAKERS, SHOWING US THAT WITH ENOUGH STEPS, ANY DISTANCE IS CONQUERABLE.
THIS ACHIEVEMENT SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT THE SPIRIT OF PERSEVERANCE AND JOY IN OUR DISTRICT.
GARY REMINDS US THAT LIFE'S RACES ARE BEST RUN WITH DETERMINATION AND A TOUCH OF ADVENTURE.
LET'S GIVE GARY A HUGE CHEER AS WE PRESENT HIM WITH THE MILL TOWN PRIDE AWARD.
GARY, YOU'VE TRULY SET THE PACE FOR EXCELLENCE AND FUNDED OUR COMMUNITY.
HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT, JUST FINISHED THE BOSTON MARATHON.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE RECOGNIZE HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
GARY, THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR US.
>> GARY, YOU WANT TO COME THIS WAY. WE CAN STAMP HERE.
>> WHILE GARY IS COMING OVER, I ALSO WANT TO THANK GARY FOR HIS WORK.
IT'LL BE LATER IN THE SUPERINTENDENT REPORT.
THOSE OF YOU WHO KNEW ABOUT DR. BARRETT JOINING US LIVE STREAM TO OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF.
GARY WAS REALLY AT THE FOREFRONT OF MAKING SURE THAT WORKED.
I JUST WAS IN AWE OF HOW CLEAR THAT COMMUNICATION WAS FROM THE SPACE STATION.
GARY, YOU ONLY DO IT DOWN HERE ON THE GROUND BUT UP THERE IN SPACE, TOO. THANKS GARY.
THE NEXT ONE, THIS IS A MILL TOWN OF PRIDE TO NEIL MIDDLETON.
IS NEIL HERE TONIGHT? NEIL, WOULD YOU MIND COMING UP SO WE CAN ALSO EMBARRASS YOU? WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS STORY, I THOUGHT IT WAS APROPOS TO MAKE SURE THAT NEIL RECEIVED THIS ACKNOWLEDGMENT. IS THAT AILEEN? AILEEN, COME ON OUT. BEFORE YOU GO THOUGH, I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT WHEN I FOUND OUT THIS STORY, I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY APROPOS TO BRING NEIL UP AS ONE OF OUR NEWEST EMPLOYEES TO DO WHAT YOU'RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT HE DID WAS JUST ABSOLUTELY EXCEPTIONAL, AND IT GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT THE STAFF HERE IN CAMAS DOESN'T JUST DO THEIR JOB DESCRIPTION.
IT'S SO MUCH MORE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I THINK YOU'LL REALIZE THAT WHEN YOU HEAR THIS.
[00:05:02]
I'LL PASS IT OFF TO YOU, AILEEN.>> FIRST OFF, HE IS A GREAT ASSET TO OUR TRANSPORTATION.
HE RECENTLY COMPLETED OUR COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAM.
HE EMBARKED ON VARIOUS ROUTES, GAINING INVALUABLE EXPERIENCES AND FAMILIARITY WITH STUDENTS ENTRUSTED TO OUR CARE.
HOWEVER, NEIL'S JOURNEY FROM TRAINING TO FULLY FLEDGED BUS DRIVER TOOK AN UNEXPECTED TURN WHILE RIDING A BUS, NEIL FOUND HIMSELF FACING A SITUATION THAT DEMANDED MORE THAN JUST ROUTINE EXPERTISE.
IT CALLED FOR SWIFT ACTION AND A CALM DEMEANOR.
A SIXTH GRADER FROM LIBERTY SUDDENLY BEGAN EXPERIENCING BREATHING DIFFICULTIES BECAUSE HE WAS SUCKING ON A HARD CANDY.
WITHOUT HESITATION, NEIL SPRANG INTO ACTION, RECOGNIZING THE URGENCY OF THE SITUATION.
HE SWIFTLY ASSESSED THAT THE STUDENT WAS CHOKING AND INSTINCTIVELY PERFORMED THE HEIMLICH MANEUVER.
SUCCESSFULLY DISLODGING A PIECE OF HARD CANDY LODGED IN THE STUDENT'S THROAT.
HIS QUICK THINKING AND DECISIVE ACTIONS UNDOUBTEDLY SAVED THE DAY, HIGHLIGHTING NOT ONLY HIS PROFICIENCY AS A BUS DRIVER, BUT ALSO HIS UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO THE SAFETY AND WELL BEING OF THE STUDENTS UNDER HIS CARE.
THERE WE GO. HE'S A GREAT ASSET TO TRANSPORTATION, NEIL MIDDLETON.
>> PRETTY AMAZING STUFF AND WE JUST APPRECIATE YOU, NEIL.
NOT JUST WHAT YOU DID THAT DAY, BUT WHAT YOU DO EVERY DAY WITH OUR KIDS.
THEY'RE REALLY THE FIRST EDUCATOR THAT OUR KIDS SEE EVERY DAY.
THAT'S WHY IT'S SO IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE GREAT DRIVERS THAT HAVE A SMILE ON THEIR FACE THAT REALLY CARE ABOUT KIDS, AND WE DO HERE IN CAMAS, AND NEIL, YOU'RE THE EPITOME OF THAT. THANK YOU.
THEN OUR LAST MILL TOWN PRIDE GOES TO THESE AMAZING LADIES IN THE BACK.
THIS IS OUR STATE CHAMPION GIRLS GOLF TEAM. COME ON UP.
[APPLAUSE] COACH FOSTER. LUCKILY, THE GIRLS WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME BEFORE OUR AGENDA WAS DUE, AND SO WE WERE ABLE TO GET THEM IN HERE TO THIS BOARD MEETING.
COACH FOSTER, WE'RE JUST SO EXCITED FOR YOU AND PROUD OF YOU AND I JUST WANT TO SEE IF YOU WANT TO SHARE A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE GIRLS.
>> WELL, I NEVER HIT A BALL THE ENTIRE RIDE GOING INTO, IT WAS ALL THEM.
ANYWAY, THIS WAS A VERY FOCUSED GROUP OF YOUNG LADIES AND THEY PLAYED TREMENDOUSLY THE ENTIRE SEASON.

FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, THE PURPOSE OF THE CAMUS EDUCATION, FUTURE EDUCATOR SCHOLARSHIP HAS BEEN TO ENCOURAGE AND ENABLE CAMUS GRADUATES TO PURSUE CAREERS IN PUBLIC EDUCATION.
IT'S A REAL PLEASURE TO HELP CAMUS GRADUATES DO THIS, AND IT'S A COMPLIMENT TO THE HUNDREDS OF CAMUS TEACHERS, LIBRARIANS COUNSELORS, AND SPECIALISTS THAT OUR GRADUATES MUST REALLY LIKE THE WORK THAT WE'VE DONE FOR THEM THAT THEY CAN SEE THEMSELVES DOING THE PROFESSIONS THAT WE'RE DOING AND THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO TAKE OUR PLACES FROM US WHEN WE ARE OLD AND GRAY AND LIE DOWN.
ANNUALLY, THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE RECEIVES ABOUT TWO DOZEN APPLICANTS, AND WE TRY VERY HARD TO SELECT A GROUP OF WINNERS THAT REFLECTS A VARIETY OF THE SPECIALTIES AND SUBJECTS AND GRADE LEVELS THAT OUR MEMBERS REPRESENT AND THAT INCLUDES AS MANY OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS OF THE CAMUS SCHOOL DISTRICT AS WE CAN.

IT'S BECAUSE OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS THAT I HAVE SERVED WITH THAT I'M ABLE TO SAY THAT THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS STRONG.
THROUGH THE BOARD'S DEDICATION AND GUIDANCE, THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES OF THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE BEING LED BY TRUSTWORTHY, TRANSPARENT, AND PROFESSIONAL VOLUNTEERS THAT CONTINUE TO PUT STUDENTS FIRST WITH EVERY DECISION MADE.
AS I REFLECT ON THE PAST SIX PLUS YEARS OF VOLUNTEERING AS A CAMAS SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTOR, THERE ARE SOME REALLY PARTICULAR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND MOMENTS THAT STAND OUT THE MOST IN THE WORK THAT I CONTRIBUTED ON BEHALF OF THE STUDENTS IN CAMAS.
POLICY 3112, ENACTED IN 2018, THIS EQUITY POLICY LAID THE GROUNDWORK FOR INTENTIONAL SUCCESS FOCUSED ON EVERY STUDENT IN OUR DISTRICT.
I'M PROUD TO HAVE HELPED STEWARD AND IMPLEMENT CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT'S EQUITY POLICY AND APPRECIATIVE OF THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO DEDICATED THEIR TIME TO PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS IN HELPING CRAFT THIS POLICY THAT SHINES A LIGHT ON EVERY STUDENT AND THEIR UNIQUE CONTRIBUTIONS.
AS OUR COMMUNITY IS DIVERSE AND GROWING, I'M CONFIDENT OUR BOARD AND DISTRICT ARE WELL EQUIPPED TO CONTINUE TO LEAD AND IMPROVE UPON THIS CRITICAL POLICY, ENSURING THAT THE FOUNDATION OF MAKING DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION, A CORNERSTONE OF EVERYTHING WE DO IN THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
SERVICES TO STUDENTS AND THE EVOLUTION OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, INCLUDING CHOICE LEARNING AND THE CONTINUAL COMMITMENT TO LEARNERS THROUGH CAMAS CONNECT ACADEMY, DYSLEXIA SCREENING IN OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAMS, AND A CONTINUED EVALUATION OF A FUTURE WITH A MORE BALANCED CALENDAR.
THE CAPITAL INVESTMENTS OF THE DISTRICT, INCLUDING THE PURCHASE OF THE LEADBETTER PROPERTY FOR THE FUTURE OF CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE UPDATES TO THE JOY GARVER THEATER, AND LA CAMAS HEIGHTS LEARNING CENTER, AND THE BUILDING OF DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL AND LA CAMAS LAKE ELEMENTARY, I'M IMMENSELY PROUD OF THE CAPITAL INVESTMENTS WE'VE INFLUENCED THE DISTRICT TO UNDERTAKE.
OUR FACILITIES IN CAMAS SHOULD BE LOOKED AT WITH IMMENSE PRIDE.
THE LEADBETTER PROPERTY IS A CAPITAL INVESTMENT PURCHASE THAT REPRESENTS THE FUTURE OF OUR DISTRICT, WITH STUDENT AND COMMUNITY INPUT ON WISHES, DREAMS, AND HOPES FOR THIS PROPERTY.
IT WILL BE A TURNING POINT FOR OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED NOT ONLY TO OUR STUDENTS, BUT OUR COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE.
I'M CERTAIN THAT WITH THIS BOARD'S FOCUS ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND EXPERIENCES, OUR CAMAS LEARNERS ARE NOT ONLY INCAPABLE HANDS, BUT THEY'RE ALSO WITH PUBLIC SERVANT HEARTS AS WELL.
I HAVE DEEP ADMIRATION AND RESPECT FOR OUR CAMAS SCHOOL BOARD AND KNOW THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE THE RICH HISTORY OF MAKING THE BEST DECISIONS POSSIBLE IN SUPPORTING OUR STAFF AND SERVING OUR STUDENTS AND HELPING THEM GROW AND GRADUATE WITH THEIR INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS AND TALENTS.
IT'S BEEN MY HONOR TO SERVE WITH YOU.
[00:45:03]
>> THANK YOU, ERICA FOR MAKING US ALL A LITTLE TEARY.
[LAUGHTER] AND I KNOW WE STILL HAVE A FEW MEETINGS TO GO.
I LOVE THAT YOU ALWAYS WILL THROW IN THE BALANCED CALENDAR, SO WE'LL KEEP TALKING ABOUT THAT AS WELL.
THANK YOU FOR THAT. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO ADD ON SOME REGULAR BOARD COMMUNICATIONS. ERICA, DO YOU WANT TO START?
>> YEAH, I ACTUALLY HAVE OTHER STUFF BECAUSE IT'S BEEN A BUSY MONTH, EVERYONE.
I JUST WANT TO CALL ATTENTION TO THE LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE MEETING THAT WE HAD LAST WEEK.
REPRESENTATIVE MONICA STONIER WAS ABLE TO COME AND TALK TO OUR VOLUNTEERS.
REMEMBER, THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR OF THIS COMMITTEE OF VOLUNTEERS, AND WE THANK THEM SO MUCH FOR THEIR TIME.
SHE HELPED SHARE HOW TO CONNECT AND TALK WITH OUR LEGISLATORS, CONTACTS TO FOCUS ON WITHIN THE EDUCATIONAL COMMITTEE AND OTHER COMMITTEES, UPCOMING BILLS AND HOW OUR LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE CAN HELP AND WHERE WE CAN MOVE THE NEEDLE.
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING THAT GROUP GROW NEXT YEAR AND REALLY BE A VOICE FOR CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WE HAD SOME SITE VISITS THAT WERE SO AWESOME.
FAVORITE PART OF ALMOST GRADUATIONS.
THANK YOU TO MARY, THANK YOU TO ALL OUR FOLKS AT TRANSPORTATION AND SHERMAN, AND WE VISITED WITH BUS DRIVERS, AND THAT WAS SUCH A GREAT JOY AND WE WILL BE GOING ON SOME BUS RIDES WITH THEM.
THEY WANT US TO COME ON BUS RIDES, AND I LOVE THAT.
GOT TO WALK THROUGH AND SEE TECH AND TALK TECH WITH SHERMAN AND HIS TEAM.
LET'S SEE, SAW OUT LITTLEST LEARNERS AT LACAMAS HEIGHTS WITH MARY, AND SEEING THAT PROGRAM GROW AND HEARING ABOUT THE CHANGES THAT THEY'LL ENCAPSULATE NEXT YEAR.
I THINK THAT THAT WAS IT OF OUR VISITS, YEAH.
>> WE GOT A QUICK TOUR OF THE CURRIE CENTER.
>> THE CURRIE CENTER. WHAT AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO MEET WITH THOSE LEADERS OVER THERE ABOUT THEIR PROGRAM.
I APPRECIATE THAT BEING ON OUR CAMPUS. I THINK THAT'S IT.
>> ANYONE ELSE? DO YOU WANT TO GO AHEAD?
>> I'LL JUMP IN JUST REALLY QUICKLY, BEING ON THE CAPITAL FACILITIES COMMITTEE HAS BEEN BUSY WORK.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS HAVE RECEIVED THE FLYERS ABOUT WHAT WE'RE DOING WITH THE [INAUDIBLE] PROPERTY, ALSO KNOWN AS THE OLD UL CAMPUS.
WE HAVE A SURVEY OUT GATHERING INPUT FROM COMMUNITY.
WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE FOCUS GROUPS AND DEBRIEFS HAPPENING EVERY NIGHT OF THE WEEK, IT SEEMS LIKE ONE WEEK [LAUGHTER] MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, IT SEEMS LIKE, BUT THAT'S BEEN A REALLY GREAT PROCESS TO BE A PART OF.
TRACY AND I BOTH ARE ON THE COMMITTEE.
JUST AN OPPORTUNITY THAT WE HAVE AS A COMMUNITY JUST CRAFT WHAT WE WANT THAT FACILITY TO BE AND THAT LAND TO BE IS REALLY AN EXCITING PROCESS, AND I THINK THAT'S CONSUMED MOST OF MY BOARD TIME OF LATE.
>> I JUST HAVE A FEW OTHER THINGS TO ADD.
I LOVE DOING THOSE. YES, CAPITAL FACILITIES IS A LOT OF CONNIE'S IN MY TIME RIGHT NOW.
IN FACT, IT'S ALSO TOMORROW, SO WE'LL BE HERE TOMORROW WITH A DEBRIEF FOR THAT.
THE TEAM THAT WE HAVE DOING THAT, [INAUDIBLE] THEY'VE BEEN DOING A GREAT JOB.
I THINK WE'RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE DELIVERABLE IN OCTOBER, I THINK IS THE PLAN.
WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND JUST INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY AND OUR STAKEHOLDERS AND WHAT WE'RE DOING THERE HAS BEEN REALLY IMPORTANT TO US, AND SO THAT'S PART OF THE WORK THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING.
I ALSO SAT IN ON SOME HAYES FREEDOM CAPSTONE PRESENTATIONS.
DR. ANZALONE WAS IN ON THAT ONE AS WELL.
I LOVE HOW OUR DIFFERENT SCHOOLS DO THE SENIOR PROJECTS, IS WHAT I CALL THEM, DIFFERENTLY.
HAYES FREEDOM DOES IT DIFFERENT THAN DISCOVERY AND CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.
IT'S INTERESTING TO SIT IN ON THOSE AND SEE WHAT THE STUDENTS DO. IT'S AMAZING.
I AM DOING SOME SENIOR BOARDS THE NEXT TWO DAYS, SO THAT'S ALWAYS FUN TO DO.
JUST A REMINDER TO YOU GUYS, TOMORROW, YOU GUYS PROBABLY KNOW, IS THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR PICNIC OVER AT DOC HARRIS AND I WAS GOING TO
[00:50:02]
WALK OVER AFTER THIS AND I THINK COY IS TOO BECAUSE I KNOW STAFF BARBECUES AND EVERYTHING OVER THERE, SO I'LL BE OVER THERE FOR THAT.ALSO TOMORROW MORNING IS THE SECOND CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL SIGNING DAY AT 8:00 AM.
IF ANYONE WANTS TO GO TO THAT IN THE GYM, I'LL BE THERE AS WELL FOR THAT.
JUST WANTED TO THROW THAT OUT TO YOU GUYS IF YOU'RE AVAILABLE FOR THAT. I THINK THAT'S ALL I HAVE.
IF THERE'S NO GO-BACKS, I'LL MOVE ON TO ITEM 6A, PUBLIC COMMENT.
[6. PUBLIC COMMENTS]
WE HAVE TWO PUBLIC COMMENTS TONIGHT.I'LL READ OUR INSTRUCTIONS HERE.
THE BOARD VALUES PUBLIC INPUT.
THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD IS TO LISTEN AND REFLECT ON PUBLIC COMMENT ACTIVELY.
THE BOARD MAY ONLY DISCUSS AND ACT UPON ITEMS INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN AGENDA.
FOR THAT REASON, BOARD MEMBERS CANNOT RESPOND TO ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS DURING PUBLIC COMMENT, BUT CAN ASK THE SUPERINTENDENT TO FOLLOW UP ON ISSUES RAISED DURING PUBLIC TESTIMONY.
GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC INPUT EMPHASIZE THE RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS.
BOISTEROUS CONDUCT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AT ANY MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, NOR WILL ANY HARASSING OR THREATENING REMARKS BE TOLERATED.
COMPLAINTS ABOUT INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE AS A PERSONNEL MATTER.
THE BOARD RESPECTS THAT ANYONE WHO SUBMITTED WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENTS REFRAIN FROM READING THEM DURING THIS PORTION OF THE MEETING TO ALLOW FOR OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO SHARE THEIR COMMENTS.
EACH PERSON PROVIDING PUBLIC COMMENT WILL HAVE A TOTAL OF THREE MINUTES.
ONCE CALLED UPON, PLEASE STEP UP TO THE MICROPHONE.
FACE THE BOARD, STATE YOUR NAME, AND YOU MAY BEGIN.
THE BELL WILL RING AT THREE MINUTES TO REMIND YOU THAT YOUR TIME IS UP.
WE HAVE TWO PEOPLE SIGNED UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENT TONIGHT.
THE FIRST ONE IS MICHAEL SANCHEZ.
>> GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY. MY NAME IS MICHAEL SANCHEZ.
I AM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE CHEMIST EDUCATION ASSOCIATION.
WHAT WAS IT ABOUT, A WEEK OR SO AGO, I KNOW THAT MY AND MANY OF OUR MEMBERS, OUR HEARTS DROPPED JUST A LITTLE BIT WHEN WE HEARD THAT ERICA WOULD BE RESIGNING AT THE END OF JUNE, AND WE JUST WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE TO EXPRESS OUR APPRECIATION FOR WHAT YOU'VE DONE FOR OUR COMMUNITY OVER THE YEARS.
I KNOW PERSONALLY, I WAS PROUD TO WAIVE SIGNS FOR YOU DURING YOUR LAST RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN, AND I'M GLAD YOU TOOK A MOMENT TO TALK ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU'VE BEEN A PART OF IN THIS DISTRICT.
OUR EQUITY INITIATIVES, ESPECIALLY IS REALLY NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART.
SPEAKING AS SOMEONE WHO IS IN A POSITION OF LEADERSHIP IN A DIFFERENT WAY, I KNOW THAT BEING IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION HAS ITS CHALLENGES, AND IT CAN ALSO BE INCREDIBLY REWARDING.
I THINK AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU HAVE SERVED MOST IMPORTANTLY OUR CHILDREN SO VERY WELL DURING YOUR TIME ON THE BOARD, AND YOU'VE SERVED OUR MEMBERS WELL AS WELL.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I KNOW THAT I'VE APPRECIATED OVER THE YEARS IS THAT, WHILE WE ALWAYS TRY TO FIND SOLUTIONS THAT EVERYBODY CAN GET ON BOARD WITH, WE ALWAYS KNOW THAT YOU ERICA, YOU HAD THE STUDENTS IN MIND.
THAT'S NOT ALWAYS THE CASE WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH FOLKS, BUT WE KNOW THAT YOU ALWAYS HAVE CHILDREN'S BEST INTERESTS AT HEART AND AS EDUCATORS, THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO US AS AN EXECUTIVE BOARD AS WELL AS TO OUR MEMBERS.
YOU'RE LEAVING BIG SHOES TO FILL IN YOUR SEAT RIGHT THERE, BUT WE HOPE THAT WHEREVER LIFE TAKES YOU NEXT, THAT YOU'LL NOT BE A STRANGER, THAT WE GET TO SEE YOU AROUND AT OUR VARIOUS COMMUNITY EVENTS, CONCERTS, AND GRADUATIONS AND ALL OF THAT, BECAUSE YOU'VE MEANT SO MUCH TO THIS COMMUNITY FOR SO LONG.
ON BEHALF OF THE CEA EXECUTIVE BOARD AND OUR 450 MEMBERS, WE JUST WANT TO SAY, THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, MICHAEL. OUR SECOND PUBLIC COMMENT FOR THE EVENING IS VICTORIA MCPHERSON.
>> HI. MY NAME IS VICTORIA MCPHERSON.
I'M A SENIOR AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.
I CAME HERE TODAY BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE A BETTER PHONE POLICY AT CHS FOR THE STUDENTS.
[00:55:03]
I THINK THERE SHOULD BE MORE DISCIPLINE WITH PHONES BECAUSE I HAVE OBSERVED A LOT WITH THEM THIS YEAR.I BELIEVE WE CAN ONLY TEACH DISCIPLINE IN RULES FOR SO LONG TILL THEY GRADUATE AND THEY'RE OFF IN THE REAL WORLD.
WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND KNOW HOW TO FOLLOW RULES SO THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL WHEN THEY LEAVE HIGH SCHOOL.
THE STUDENTS AREN'T LISTENING, THEY AREN'T DOING THEIR WORK AND I CAN VISUALLY SEE IT'S NOT ONLY AFFECTING THEM, IT'S ALSO AFFECTING THE TEACHERS AS WELL.
ONE OF THE IDEAS I LIKE IS THE PHONE CUBBY.
I'M IN A CLASS THAT USES IT, AND IT WORKS WELL.
IT'S USED AS ATTENDANCE AND STUDENTS STILL HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR PHONES, YET THEY ARE AT THEIR DESK AND CAN WORK WITHOUT DISTRACTION.
I HAVE OBSERVED THIS A LOT AND IT WORKS REALLY WELL BESIDES THE FACT THAT THEY TAKE THEM TO THE BATHROOM OR SNEAK THEM.
I ALSO LIKE THE IDEA OF A STUDENT TURNING IN THEIR PHONE TO THE OFFICE IF THEY ARE FAILING CLASSES AND MAKING SURE THAT THAT STUDENT PASSES.
I THINK IT'S A SCHOOL'S JOB TO TEACH RESPECT AND TEACHERS DESERVE BETTER RESPECT FROM THE STUDENTS.
I WANT TO KNOW IF THE SCHOOL IS PLANNING BETTER PHONE RULES/DISCIPLINE TOWARDS THE STUDENTS WITH THIS GROWING PHONE PROBLEM, AND IF THE SCHOOL HAS ANY IDEAS IN PLACE FOR IT.
IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS WORK, IT NEEDS TO BE A DISTRICT POLICY AND NOT LEFT UP TO THE SCHOOL. THANK YOU.
>> JOHN I'LL FOLLOW UP WITH YOU.
THANK YOU. THAT MOVES US ON TO THE BUSINESS PORTION OF OUR MEETING.
YOU'RE ALL WELCOME TO STAY AS LONG AS YOU LIKE OR EXIT WHENEVER YOU FEEL.
IF YOU WANT TO GO TO K&N AND GET A BURGER, SKY RIDGE WOULD APPRECIATE THAT.
WITH THAT, WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON TO ITEM 8, THE CONSENT AGENDA.
[8. CONSENT AGENDA]
HAVE YOU ALL HAD A CHANCE TO REVIEW THE CONSENT AGENDA? IF THERE'S NO QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS, I'LL LOOK FOR A MOTION ON THE CONSENT AGENDA.>> I MOVED TO ACCEPT THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
>> SECONDED BY BAMONY. ALL IN FAVOR?
WITH THAT, WE'LL MOVE ON TO 9A,
[9. REPORTS]
THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT, AND I'LL PASS OFF TO DR. ANZALONE.>> THANK YOU, TRACY. AS ERICA SAID, VERY EVENTFUL MAY, IT WAS HARD TO PACK EVERYTHING INTO THIS.
I CHOSE THE HIGHLIGHTS, AND SO I HOPE YOU ENJOY SEEING A LOT OF THE CELEBRATIONS AND THE UPDATES THAT WE HAVE FOR YOU TONIGHT.
AS ALWAYS LIKE TO START OFF WITH ENROLLMENT FOR YOU.
AS YOU SEE, WE ACTUALLY GAINED THREE STUDENTS FROM APRIL 15TH TO MAY 15TH, WHICH IS MOVEMENT IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, EVEN THOUGH SMALL, JUST OVER 6,900 STUDENTS IN OUR DISTRICT THAT ARE FTE.
SECONDARY JUST OVER 4,000 AND ELEMENTARY JUST UNDER 3,000 ACTUALLY GAINED MOST OF OUR STUDENTS AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH.
IN HIGH SCHOOL, WE DID CONTINUE TO SEE THAT PROGRESSION AT CCA, STUDENTS FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER JOINING OUR ONLINE PROGRAM, WHICH IS OUTSTANDING.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A WHILE, WE DID SEE A SMALL DECREASE AT HOUSE FREEDOM, AND THAT'S ALWAYS VERY CASE BY CASE BASIS.
EITHER STUDENTS MOVING ON TO CCA, FINDING OTHER WAYS TO GAIN THEIR CREDITS OR JUST FRANKLY MOVING AWAY FROM THE PROGRAM.
BUT STILL OVERALL THIS YEAR, I THINK WE SAW SOME REALLY POSITIVE ENROLLMENT RESULTS AT OUR SELECT SCHOOL SPECIFICALLY AT HOUSE FREEDOM, SO KUDOS TO THAT TEAM.
MIDDLE SCHOOL STAYED VERY CONSISTENT.
YOU DON'T SEE A LOT OF MOVEMENT THERE.
AND ELEMENTARY, I'M REALLY HAPPY TO SEE THAT WOODBURN IS STABILIZING A LITTLE BIT.
I KNOW THIS YEAR, WE SAW A LITTLE BIT OF TRANSIENCY OVER IN THE WOODBURN NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT ZERO MOVEMENT OVER THE LAST MONTH, WHICH IS NICE TO SEE.
WE DID SEE SOME GAINS AT LAKMIS, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS INTERESTING.
AGAIN, SOME OF THAT GROWTH IN THAT AREA MIGHT BE CONTRIBUTING TO THAT.
BUT FOR THE REST OF OUR ELEMENTARY, YOU SEE SOME PRETTY CONSISTENT NUMBERS.
I WILL REMIND THE BOARD THAT OUR DEMOGRAPHY STUDY IS IN, AND WE'RE ANALYZING THAT AS WE SPEAK.
AND SO ONCE A SUMMARY IS READY FOR PRESENTATION, WE'LL BRIEF THE BOARD AND THEN HOPEFULLY BRING THAT TO YOU IN THE NEXT MONTH OR SO.
I'M NOT SURE IF JASON, WE'LL SHARE ANY OF THAT, BUT FEEL FREE TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT TOO.
AND JUST TO REITERATE WHAT ERICA SAID, I THOUGHT THAT OUR LAST LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE MEETING WAS REALLY POWERFUL.
REPRESENTATIVE STONIER HERE DOESN'T HOLD BACK, WHICH I LOVE THAT ABOUT HER.
SHE'S VERY FRANK, AND SHE GETS RIGHT TO THE POINT.
YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT TRANSPARENCY.
YOU DON'T FIND THAT WITH EVERY LEGISLATOR.
I LOVE THAT ABOUT MONICA, AND WE'RE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE MONICA REALLY ON TEXT.
SHE ANSWERS US REALLY FREQUENTLY, AND SHE'S WILLING TO COME BACK.
SHE SHARED SOME GREAT INSIGHT AS ERICA MENTIONED,
[01:00:03]
SO I WON'T REITERATE ALL OF THAT.BUT I'M EXCITED TO SEE HER AGAIN AFTER ELECTION SEASON AS WE GET INTO THE SESSION OF 2025.
AS I'VE SAID, COUNTLESS TIMES, AND I'LL SAY IT A MILLION TIMES MORE.
THIS 2025 SESSION IS CRITICAL, NOT JUST FOR US IN CAMAS BUT FOR OUR ENTIRE STATE WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATION.
ONE OF THE THINGS MONICA SHARED, AND WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF BIG ISSUES THAT OUR STATE HOUSE TO DEAL WITH.
AND I CAN'T REMEMBER WHO SAID IT AT THE MEETING, BUT I THOUGHT THEY WERE SPOT ON WHEN THEY SAID THAT HERE IN EDUCATION, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP WITH SO MANY OF THESE BIG ISSUES, WHERE WE CAN EDUCATE OUR KIDS, EDUCATE OUR FAMILIES ON SO MANY OF THESE BIG HEARTBURN ISSUES THAT ARE HAPPENING, AND WE THINK THAT THE KEY IS EDUCATION AND PUBLIC EDUCATION SPECIFICALLY.
I JUST WANT TO LET THE COMMUNITY KNOW AND THE BOARD KNOW THAT OUR WORK DOESN'T STOP JUST BECAUSE WE'RE NOT IN SESSION.
AND YES, WE'RE IN AN OFF TIME RIGHT NOW, BUT THE WORK IS CONTINUING.
THE CONTACTS WITH OUR LEGISLATORS, US SHOWING UP AT EVENTS, BEING PRESENT, BEING HEARD, AND CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED WHEN WE GET INTO THE 2025 SESSION THAT NOT JUST OUR VOICES WERE HEARD, BUT THEY'RE HEARD REPEATEDLY, THE SAME MESSAGE.
I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SUMMER WHEN WE AS A BOARD, COME UP WITH THE PRIORITIES FOR CAMAS, WHICH I ASSUME ARE GOING TO BE IN LINE WITH A LOT OF OUR SURROUNDING NEIGHBORS, BUT ALSO SOME MORE INDIVIDUALIZED PRIORITIES FOR CAMAS, AND I'M REALLY PROUD THAT I COULD HELP SERVE IN THAT WAY AND BE IN OLYMPIA AND BE A VOICE FOR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT AS WE MOVE INTO THE NEXT SESSION.
WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE KEEPING EDUCATION AS A STATE PRIORITY.
WE HEAR THIS LIST ALL THE TIME, WHERE WE'RE SIXTH OR SEVENTH OR EIGHTH.
WE'RE JUST TOO FAR DOWN THE ROAD, AND WE NEED TO GET BACK UP INTO THAT TOP 1, 2, AND 3 IN THE PRIORITY LIST OF OUR LEGISLATORS.
THAT'S A HUGE GOAL AND INITIATIVE OF OURS AS WE MOVE FORWARD.
OUR FOCUS, AS ERICA SAID IS ON RELATIONSHIPS AND CONTINUING TO BUILD, NOT WITH JUST REPRESENTATIVE STONIER BUT WITH ALL OF OUR REPS, AND JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, ANY NEW REPS THAT COME IN AS AN ELECTION.
THERE'S GOING TO BE A HUGE TURNOVER IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON AND SPECIFICALLY HERE IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON.
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE MEETING THESE REPRESENTATIVES, FINDING OUT WHAT MAKES THEM GO AND LETTING THEM KNOW WHAT MAKES US GO AND WHAT OUR NEEDS AND OUR DESIRES ARE, AND MAKING THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH THE SUMMER AND THROUGH THE FALL I THINK IS GOING TO PAY HUGE DIVIDENDS FOR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT WHEN THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD IN THE SPRING OF 2025.
AGAIN, WE PLAN ON WELCOMING MORE CANDIDATES AND REPRESENTATIVES TO CAMAS THROUGH THE LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE.
THERE'S ALSO SOME APPETITE TO BRING OUR GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATES IN AFTER THE PRIMARY, POTENTIALLY TO JUST GET TO KNOW WHO THIS PERSON MAY BE AND WHO'S GOING TO LEAD OUR STATE FOR THE NEXT FOUR PLUS YEARS.
AGAIN, I'LL STATE THAT OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE ONE COLLECTIVE VOICE, ONE COLLECTIVE MESSAGE.
I THINK PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THINGS OVER AND OVER AND OVER, SO THAT MAY THEY'RE STICKING.
I'M REALLY PROUD OF THIS WORK, ERICA.
I'LL HAVE A COUPLE OF OTHER COMMENTS AT THE END OF MY REPORT FOR YOU, BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSPIRATION WITH THIS WORK.
YOU'RE A HUGE ADVOCATE, AND YOU'VE TAUGHT ME A LOT ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE IN OUR STATE.
I'LL TELL YOU AMONG ALL THE MILLIONS OF THINGS I'M GOING TO MISS.
I HOPE YOU STAY CONNECTED IN SOME WAY WITH THIS BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO NEED YOU ALONG THE WAY AS WE GET INTO THE SPRING.
A FEW OF THE EVENTS THAT I WAS PRIVILEGED TO BE A PART OF THIS LAST MONTH.
I MENTIONED THIS IN A FIVE GOOD THINGS EARLIER THIS YEAR.
BUT I JUST WANT TO POINT OUT, THESE ARE INCREDIBLE STUDENTS.
THESE STUDENTS ARE IN OUR TRANSITION HOUSE PROGRAM AND IN A POST PROGRAM.
AFTER OUR STUDENTS LEAVE THE TRADITIONAL K-12, THEY'RE PROVIDED OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND GROW IN OUR DISTRICT.
THIS WAS AN EVENT THAT ORGANIZATION CALLED OUTDOORS FOR ALL PUT ON AT BAGLEY PARK.
AND I WAS JUST IMPRESSED SO MUCH ABOUT THIS.
IT WAS 100 PARTICIPANTS FROM SEVEN TRANSITION PROGRAMS ALL ACROSS SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND INCLUDE STEVENSON, EVERGREEN, VANCOUVER, WASHOUGAL.
THIS WAS A CYCLING EVENT WHERE THE STUDENTS WERE ACTUALLY GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO RIDE SPECIALIZED BICYCLES.
BECAUSE OF OUR PARTICIPATION, WE WERE DONATED ONE TO BE IN OUR TRANSITION HOUSE.
THE KIDS ARE GOING TO HAVE YOUNG ADULTS, I SHOULD SAY, HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND GROW AND RIDE A SPECIALIZED BIKE.
[01:05:02]
IT'S GOING TO BE SIMILAR TO THE ONE ON THE RIGHT THERE.IT'S LONG. BEING ALL OF FIVE NINE.
I WAS STRUGGLING WITH THAT THING.
YOU REALLY HAVE TO STRETCH YOUR LEGS OUT THERE.
I'LL HOPEFULLY GET YOU GUYS ON THAT BIKE WHEN WE GET IT.
I KNOW THIS PICTURE ISN'T GREAT, BUT I WANTED TO CAPTURE THE FACT THAT OUR EQUITY FORMS ARE BACK.
I THINK THAT WAS OUR BOARD REPRESENTATION FOR BOTH OF THOSE EVENINGS.
I HOPE YOU SHARE WITH ME THAT THOSE WERE REALLY POWERFUL EVENTS, AND I'M SO GLAD I WASN'T HERE WHEN THEY WERE HAPPENING BEFORE.
I'M VERY PROUD THAT KATIE SEIDL AND OUR TEAM BROUGHT THESE BACK AND HAD SOME REALLY ROBUST CONVERSATIONS AROUND BIAS, IMPLICIT BIAS, EQUITY, OF COURSE, AND JUST HOW WE CARRY OURSELVES AS INDIVIDUALS AND LABELS AND THINGS LIKE THAT IN THE COMMUNITY FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE WERE THERE SHARING STORIES, GETTING REALLY INTIMATE ON SOME OF THESE ANECDOTES.
I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO CONTINUE THAT WORK.
THANK YOU, ERICA AND BAMONY FOR BEING THERE, AND THOSE ARE LATE NIGHTS, I KNOW, BUT I THOUGHT KATIE REALLY KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK WITH HER AGENDAS AND HOW SCENIC THINGS WERE, AND AS ALWAYS, THE STUDENTS WERE THE STARS OF THE SHOW IN MY OPINION.
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON THAT.
WE'LL KEEP THOSE GOING FOR SURE.
WE HAD A LOT OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS ASK FOR THOSE TO COME BACK.
WE WERE LISTENING LOUD AND CLEAR.
I KNOW WE'VE CELEBRATED SOPHIA PROBABLY COUNTLESS TIMES IN THE PAST AND PROBABLY HAVE MANY MORE TO GO.
BUT I JUST WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE SOPHIA WADE, AND ALSO, OF COURSE, ARAV SHAH.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW A LOT ABOUT THE MARSHALL YOUTH AWARD, GENERAL MARSHALL WAS A BIG PART OF THE VANCOUVER COMMUNITY.
I HAD NO IDEA THAT THE MARSHALL PLAN WAS REALLY CAME OUT OF VANCOUVER.
GENERAL MARSHALL CAME UP WITH THAT PLAN AFTER WORLD WAR II, I BELIEVE, AND WAS A HUGE INFLUENCE IN OUR COUNTRY AND ENDED UP BECOMING SECRETARY OF DEFENSE AND SECRETARY OF STATE, I BELIEVE.
GREAT HISTORY. ANYWAY, SOPHIA, AMONG MANY YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY WAS SELECTED FOR THIS AWARD, AND JUST A HUGE SCHOLARSHIP, IT WAS FUNNY THAT SHE COULDN'T BE THERE BECAUSE SHE WAS IN ANAHEIM AT THE DECCA EVENT.
IT WAS LIKE, ONLY SOPHIA WOULD BE DOING COMMUNITY SERVICE AT A TIME WHEN SHE WAS RECEIVING AN AWARD.
ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR ME WAS CHARLOTTE WATERS, ONE OF OUR GREAT TEACHERS OVER AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL WHO ACTUALLY NOMINATED SOPHIA, BUT ALSO SHOWED UP TO SHARE THE SPEECH AND SHARE THE NOMINATION.
EVEN THOUGH SOPHIA COULDN'T BE THERE, HER AMAZING PARENTS WERE THERE, TO RECEIVE THE AWARD.
THEN YOU SEE ARRIVE ON THE FAR RIGHT WITH TRACY AND ERICA WHO WERE ABLE TO JOIN US IN THAT EVENT.
I'M SURE WE'LL SAY THAT A MILLION MORE TIMES, BUT SHE'S OFF TO SPELMAN IN THE FALL, SO WE'RE EXCITED FOR HER AND HER FAMILY.
[BACKGROUND] GABBY IS HERE TO LET US KNOW.
THE SKY HAWKS ARE IN THE HOUSE.
WE'RE PROUD OF HER. I'M SURE YOU ARE TOO.
AGAIN, WE'RE TWO FOR TWO SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE, BUT I'M SURE THERE WAS A LOT MORE BEFORE THAT, 100% SAFETY INSPECTION.
I WANT TO THANK OUR ENTIRE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT, LED BY SHERMAN AND LAURA AND THE TEAM THAT WSP WAS ON SITE CONDUCTING THEIR ANNUAL SAFETY INSPECTION FOR CAMAS TRANSPORTATION.
I WOULD PROBABLY SAY THAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF OUR VEHICLES USED FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION WITH KIDS, INCLUDING SCHOOL VEHICLES, HAD 100% SAFETY INSPECTION.
WE CAN REST EASY TO KNOW THAT OUR KIDS ARE TRAVELING SAFELY, ESPECIALLY WHEN NEIL'S YOUR DRIVER, THEN IT'S EVEN BETTER.
I JUST WANT TO CONGRATULATE THAT TEAM.
>> AS YOU ALSO MENTIONED, I THINK TRACY MENTIONED, AND ERICA, OUR STAKEHOLDER AND CONNIE.
I CAN'T REMEMBER WHO MENTIONED THAT, BUT WE WERE BUSY WITH OUR STAKEHOLDER FEEDBACK.
AGAIN, I THINK THE KIDS KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. I REALLY DO.
THESE ARE TWO OF OUR STUDENTS, ONE FROM CAMAS AND ONE FROM DISCOVERY OR I'M S ODYSSEY, WHO ACTUALLY SHARED ON BEHALF OF THEIR PEERS AND THE ADULTS AT THE TABLE, THEIR IDEAS FOR THE LEADBETTER CAMPUS, AND IT WAS AWESOME.
THEY HAD IDEAS THAT MANY OF US DIDN'T THINK ABOUT.
MANY DIFFERENT CONCEPTS THAT CAME OUT OF THAT THAT WEEK.
BUT I DID WANT TO HIGHLIGHT OUR STUDENTS FOR NOT ONLY SHOWING UP, BUT BEING REALLY ENGAGED IN THE WORK AND EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE.
ONE OF THE STUDENTS EVEN SAID, THIS IS LESS ABOUT ME AND MORE ABOUT MY KIDS AND MY GRANDKIDS AND WHAT CAMAS IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE WELL AFTER MOST OF US ARE IN A RETIREMENT HOME OR ON A GOLF COURSE SOMEWHERE SO I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY A GREAT WEEK WITH A HIGHLIGHT OF THE STUDENTS.
AGAIN, TO TRACY'S POINT, THANK YOU TO LSW, MAKES POZIO, THEY'VE BEEN AMAZING PARTNERS, AND IT'S SO COOL TO GET THIS OFF THE GROUND.
I KNOW WE'VE ONLY BEEN HERE TWO YEARS.
[01:10:01]
THIS IS PROBABLY A PASSION PROJECT FOR A LOT OF YOU.BUT IT'S REALLY NEAT TO SEE THE BALL REALLY MOVING ON THIS.
ANY QUESTIONS OR THOUGHTS ON THAT ONE? I USUALLY LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THE ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP.
IN THE MIDDLE DEAD CENTER THERE, THAT'S OUR SOPHOMORE OF THE MONTH, AND HE COMES FROM HAYES FREEDOM.
THAT IS DANIEL COMPTON, WHO WAS GIVEN SOPHOMORE ON THE MONTH FOR MAY.
THEN ON THE LEFT, THAT IS EMILY SHINN FROM CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, WHO TOOK HOME NOT ONE, NOT TWO, NOT THREE, NOT FOUR, NOT FIVE BUT $6,000 SCHOLARSHIP.
PRETTY HUGE. WE HAVE CLEO MCBRIDE ON THE FAR RIGHT, WHO TOOK HOME $3,000 SCHOLARSHIP ON BEHALF OF ROTARY.
AWESOME WORK BEING DONE THERE AT THEIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION.
THIS WAS THE ROBOTICS COMPETITION.
YOU SEE SOME STUDENTS THERE ON THE LEFT.
THIS WAS OUR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL COMPETITION, REALLY AMAZING JOB BY NOT JUST THOSE AT DISCOVERY, PUT THIS ON. I KNOW DEREK HERE.
DEREK IS A BIG PART OF HELPING THIS HAPPEN, BUT ALSO OUR HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM AND THE TEACHERS AND INSTRUCTORS THERE WHO ARE WITH THESE YOUNG STUDENTS EVERY SECOND OF THE WAY.
THE GUIDE THEM, THEY COACH THEM, THEY TIME THEM, THEY TEACH THEM, AND THEY'RE REALLY GIVING BACK.
DEREK AND I ARE HAVING A CONVERSATION AT THE EVENT ABOUT HOW IT MUST BE SO NEAT FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS TO BE THERE BECAUSE AT ONE POINT, THEY WERE THE YOUNGER ONES DOING THAT WORK.
REALLY COOL EVENT, AND IT PRETTY MUCH TAKES OVER ALL OF DISCOVERY.
HOLD BECAUSE HE HAS REALLY OPENED UP THE SCHOOL THIS YEAR TREMENDOUSLY TO KIDS AND THE COMMUNITY, AND PEOPLE ARE REALLY GETTING TO SEE THE BEAUTY AND ALSO WHAT CAN BE AT DISCOVERY AND PBL.
KUDOSE THERE ARE TO SO MANY PEOPLE, I WAS JUST THERE SMILING AND HAVING FUN SO NO CREDIT TO ME.
I'M GOING TO TAKE A LITTLE CREDIT FOR THIS ONE.
THIS ONE I GOT MY HANDS DIRTY.
DR. HOLD AND MR. MCBRIDE AND HIS FAMILY AND SOME OTHER STUDENTS WERE THERE TO SUPPORT CLEO.
HER SENIOR PROJECT IS TO BUILD A GREENHOUSE RIGHT OUTSIDE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL.
WHEN I SHOWED UP, THIS IS ON SATURDAY MORNING, I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT WE WERE GOING TO BE DIGGING THE HARDEST GRASS.
IT LOOKED LIKE IT CAME OUT OF VEGAS.
I THOUGHT MAYBE I BROUGHT IT WITH ME.
THIS WAS REALLY HARD DIRT AND HARD GRASS, AND WE GOT IT DONE.
BIG RECTANGLE. I CAN'T REMEMBER THE SIZE OF IT.
THIS WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME A GREENHOUSE THAT THE STUDENTS WILL CULTIVATE AND WORK ON AND REALLY PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT.
THIS WAS ALL FROM CLEO IN THE MIDDLE THERE ON THE PICTURE ON THE LEFT.
WE HAD TO DO A WIDE LENS ANYTIME DR.
HOLD IS THERE, NOT FOR ME, THOUGH.
WE DID A LOT OF WORK, AND IT WAS A LOT OF FUN ON A SATURDAY THE KIDS DID MOST OF IT.
I JUST WANT TO THANK CLEO FOR HER VISION ON THIS PROJECT AND JUST SAY, THIS IS REALLY NEAT TO SEE PEOPLE COME TOGETHER ON A SATURDAY.
I WAS THE ONLY ONE SAYING, THIS IS THE NICEST MAY EVER FOR ME. MOVING ON.
WE ALREADY CONGRATULATED THE GIRLS GOLF TEAM TONIGHT, BUT I JUST WANT TO RECOGNIZE OUR GIRLS GOLF TEAM AND COACH FOSTER FOR A HUGE WIN ON BEHALF OF CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT.
AGAIN, THEIR INCREDIBLE 35 STROKE WIN JUST DOMINATED THE FIELD, AND WE'RE PROUD OF THEM.
WE'RE GOING TO BE CELEBRATING MORE OF OUR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND STATE RUNNER UP CHAMPIONS, HOPEFULLY, IN OUR NEXT MEETING IN JUNE.
WE WERE BARELY ABLE TO SQUEEZE THE GIRLS IN.
THEY WON JUST BEFORE THE BOARD AGENDA, BUT WE WILL DEFINITELY RECOGNIZE SOME OF OUR TRACK STARS, OUR SOCCER STARS, AND ANYONE ELSE WE MISSED TONIGHT.
IT'S HARD WHEN WE WIN SO MUCH TO GET EVERYBODY IN, BUT THAT'S A GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE.
THIS EVENT KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF.
I FIRST FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS, PROBABLY ON THE SAME TIME YOU ALL DID WHEN MARIA NAVARRO FROM HAYES FREEDOM PUT TOGETHER AN IDEA TO HAVE AN ART BLOCK.
TRACY AND I WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE AT HER SENIOR PROJECT PRESENTATION.
WE GOT A SNEAK PREVIEW, AND THEN I WAS HONORED TO BE AT THIS RIBBON CUTTING.
YOU SEE MARIA THERE IN THE MIDDLE, SHE GOT TO HOLD THE BIG SCISSORS.
I'VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF DOING THAT.
WE HAD CARRIE FROM DOWNTOWN CAMAS ASSOCIATION AND MANY OF THE STAFF AND ADMIN FROM HAYES AND A LOT OF STUDENTS WERE THERE.
WHAT WAS SO COOL ABOUT THIS WAS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE MURALS WAS PAINTED OR MADE BY A STUDENT IN OUR DISTRICT. THERE'S EIGHT OF THEM.
IF YOU HAVEN'T GONE DOWN AND SEEN IT YET, IT'S AWESOME.
THEY WERE ALL COVERED IN CARDBOARD, AND THEN AT ONE MOMENT, WE'RE ALL PULLED DOWN.
[01:15:01]
YOU'LL SEE THAT THERE'S QR CODES, SO YOU CAN GET MORE INFORMATION ON THE ACTUAL ART AND K A LITTLE BACKGROUND THERE.THIS IS ON THE BACK WALL OF THE ZIPLI BUILDING, AND A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT STOOD OUT IN TRACY, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU PICKED UP ON THIS, TOO, BUT MARIA, THIS WASN'T A WALK IN THE PARK FOR HER.
THIS WAS A LOT OF HARD WORK, A LOT OF GRIND TO GET THIS DONE, AND SHE FACED SOME OBSTACLES, ESPECIALLY WITH IT BEING IN THE HISPANIC CULTURE.
NOT EVERYBODY WAS WILLING TO JUST LAY DOWN THE RED CARPET IN THE COMMUNITY FOR HER AND THAT STRUCK ME.
HER PERSEVERANCE AND FORTITUDE KEPT ON, AND SHE WASN'T GOING TO QUIT UNTIL A COMPANY SAID, WE GOT YOU, AND WE'RE GOING TO DEDICATE OUR WHOLE BACK WALL TO YOU.
I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY AMAZING, AND I THINK THAT'S JUST GOING TO GO A LONG WAY TO HELP CONTINUE TO DIVERSIFY OUR COMMUNITY.
I THINK THIS IS A BIG FIRST STEP FOR DOWNTOWN CANVAS.
PLEASE IF YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN DOWN THERE YET, IT'S AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY.
CHASEY, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU WANTED TO DO.
>> THIS IS ON THE BACK OF ZIPLI NEXT TO GRAINS OF RATH, IF YOU'RE LOOKING AT GRAINS OF RATH FROM HERE, I SOUND LIKE A LOCAL.
IF YOU'RE LOOKING AT GRAINS OF RATH, IT'S THE BUILDING RIGHT TO, IT'S LEFT IF YOU'RE LOOKING FROM THIS DIRECTION.
I BELIEVE THEY'RE INTERNET COMPANY.
I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM, BUT THEY WERE VERY GENEROUS.
>> THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE WHOLE MONTH WAS OUR ABILITY TO STREAM DR. MICHAEL BARRETT FROM THE SPACE STATION.
SHERMAN, THANK YOU, YOUR TEAM.
I MENTIONED GARY EARLIER, BUT JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, THIS WAS A GRASSROOTS EFFORT FROM THE TEACHERS AND THE STAFF AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.
THEY WERE REALLY THE ONES WHO KEPT THIS GOING.
CORY MARSHALL, TO NAME ONE OF MANY, REALLY GOT THIS MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
GARY AND HIS TEAM WERE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH DR. BARRETT.
WE HAD TEACHERS FROM HIS CHILDHOOD ON THERE.
I BELIEVE IT WAS HOSTED BY, I KNOW, TRACY, YOU KNOW THESE TEACHERS WELL.
IT WAS, WHO WAS THE OTHER TEACHER?
>> MISS WELCH WHO SURPRISED HIM.
ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS IS HE COULDN'T SEE US, BUT HE COULD HEAR US.
WHEN GARY ABRAHAMSEN JUMPED ON, IT WAS LIKE THIS IS MY LIFE KIND OF GAME.
HE CAME ON AND FROM THE SPACE STATION WAS LIKE, THAT'S GARY, MY OLD CLASSMATE.
IT WAS THE COOLEST THING EVER.
IT WAS A NICE CONNECTION THERE.
STUDENTS FROM EVERY SINGLE ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS WERE ABLE TO ASK A QUESTION OF DR. BARRETT, AND HE WAS SO CHARISMATIC AND FUNNY.
I THOUGHT THERE WAS GOING TO BE A LOT LONGER GAP BETWEEN HIM HEARING US.
IT WAS BETTER THAN ANYTHING OUR CABLE COULD PRODUCE HERE ON THE GROUND.
THE KIDS GOT TO HEAR FROM A REAL LIVE ASTRONAUT.
I KNOW MY THIRD GRADER CAME HOME, AND SHE'S LIKE, I WANT TO BE AN ASTRONAUT NOW.
BUT THEN THE NEXT NIGHT, SHE WANTED TO BE SOMETHING ELSE.
WITH THAT SAID, I JUST WANT TO END BY SAYING ON A PERSONAL NOTE, ERICA, YOU WERE ONE OF THE FIVE THAT BROUGHT ME HERE.
I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH ON A PERSONAL LEVEL FOR WHAT YOU'VE DONE FOR MY FAMILY AND ME ON A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL AS WELL. WE LOVE CAMAS.
THE SELLING POINT WAS WHEN YOU AND TRACY FLEW DOWN, MET ME AT MY HOUSE IN LAS VEGAS WHILE IT WAS HOPEFULLY GOING UP FOR SALE THE NEXT DAY AND MET MY FAMILY AND REALLY BROUGHT ME INTO YOUR FAMILY.
I STILL REMEMBER WE HAD NO FURNITURE FOR A WHILE, AND YOU WERE BRINGING AIR MATTRESSES AND EVERYBODY WAS CHIPPING IN.
CONNIE'S LIKE, STAY AT OUR HOUSE, AND I WAS LIKE, THIS IS COOL TO BE HERE.
THEN, SINCE THEN, REALLY, MY WIFE AND I AND MY KIDS HAVE SEEN YOU AS A FRIEND AND PART OF OUR FAMILY, TOO, WALKING BY OUR HOUSE, LETTING US SHARE YOUR DOGS AND THANKFULLY, WE DIDN'T GO DOWN THAT ROAD.
BUT YOU ARE AN AMAZING PERSON, SO PASSIONATE.
YOU SAW THAT TONIGHT AND LOVING AND CARING, AND YOU DON'T HAVE ANY HIDDEN AGENDA.
YOU DO THIS WORK FOR THE KIDS LIKE MR. SANCHEZ SAID, AND I JUST APPRECIATE EVERY MOMENT I'VE HAD WITH YOU, GOING TO MISS YOU SO MUCH, BUT I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE WHEN YOU'RE NOT MY BOSS.
WE CAN REALLY BE FRIENDS. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.
I LOVE THESE MAY AND JUNE BOARD MEETINGS.
THERE'S SO MUCH CELEBRATION AND SO MUCH GOING ON.
ALL OF OUR BOARD MEETINGS ARE GREAT, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THESE TWO, YOU'RE EVERYWHERE AND THERE'S SO MUCH THAT THAT WE'RE DOING AND SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE.
IF I CAN COMMENT ON THE DR. BARRETT, I KNEW THAT WAS HAPPENING BECAUSE I SAW COMMUNICATIONS ABOUT IT, BUT I GUESS I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT EVERY SINGLE STUDENT IN THE DISTRICT GOT TO
[01:20:02]
WATCH THAT BECAUSE MY SON CAME HOME FROM SCHOOL AND HE WAS TELLING ME ALL ABOUT IT.THEY HAD SPECIAL ADVISORY SET UP SO THAT EVERY KID GOT TO WATCH IT LIVE WHEN IT HAPPENED, WHICH I THOUGHT THAT IS AMAZING THAT OUR SCHOOL WAS ABLE TO PULL THAT OFF, JUST NOT ONLY THE TECHNOLOGY, BUT EVERY KID IN THE DISTRICT GOT TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE AND THEY HAD KIDS FROM ALL AGES ASKING PRE-SET QUESTIONS.
I HEARD GREAT THINGS ABOUT IT.
I LOVE THAT. I GOT A LOT OF GOOD PRESS, I THINK AS WELL.
THAT WAS GREAT. WITH THAT, WE'LL MOVE ON TO ITEM B THE MONTHLY BUDGET REPORT, AND I BELIEVE JASON WILL PRESENT THAT TO US.
>> NO, YOU'RE FINE. NO WORRIES.
THERE IT IS. THIS EVENING, I WANTED TO COVER A FEW THINGS AND I DON'T WANT TO REPEAT OR GET AHEAD OF THE AGENDA.
ONE OF THE THINGS I PLAN TO TALK ABOUT.
I'LL LOOK AT THAT. PERFECT TIME. THANK YOU, GAIL.
WAS THE US TENNIS ASSOCIATION PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY, AND I KNOW THAT WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS IN A FEW MINUTES, BUT I WANTED TO DESCRIBE THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS THAT WE WOULD EXPECT IF WE WERE TO MOVE FORWARD ON THIS.
REALLY WHAT'S BEFORE THE BOARD IS REALLY AN AUTHORIZATION FOR STAFF TO MOVE FORWARD WITH PURSUING THE PROJECT.
AS WITH ANYTHING, THERE'S A LOT OF DUE DILIGENCE ON THE FRONTEND.
WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THAT FOR QUITE SOME TIME JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S NO MAJOR FATAL FLAWS AROUND THE CONCEPT, IF YOU WILL.
THEN WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH USTA TO IRON OUT WHAT SOME OF THE PARTNERSHIP ELEMENTS WOULD LOOK LIKE.
I WAS GLAD THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO COME TO THE LAST BOARD MEETING AND PROVIDE AN UPDATE TO THE BOARD THEMSELVES BECAUSE MUCH BETTER TO HEAR DIRECTLY FROM THEM.
MATTHEW AND CHINA AND PAT HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL PARTNERS TO WORK WITH.
REALLY TONIGHT IS JUST THAT AUTHORIZATION FOR STAFF TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD.
HOWEVER, THEIR BOARD HAS AUTHORIZED THEM TO MOVE FORWARD.
SO IT'S IN GOOD FAITH THAT WE DO THE SAME.
JUST LIKE WITH ANY USE OF OUR PROPERTY OTHER THAN EDUCATIONAL USE, WE HAVE TO SURPLUS IT.
THERE WILL BE A RESOLUTION IF THE MOTION IS APPROVED, IT'LL COME IN A FOLLOWING MEETING.
THEN AT THAT POINT, AFTER A CERTAIN WAITING PERIOD OF 45 DAYS, THEN WE WOULD BE ABLE TO ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT.
THAT'S KIND OF THE SEQUENCE IF WE'RE TO CONTINUE ON.
THEN WE STILL HAVE TO OBVIOUSLY GET PERMITTING AND WHAT HAVE YOU WITH THE CITY AND EVERYTHING.
IT'S A LENGTHY PROCESS, BUT WE START EARLY AND REALLY TARGETING CONSTRUCTION IN SUMMER OF 2025.
BUT IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE ALL OF THE PERMITTING TAKES TIME THROUGH THE CITY.
THEY'RE VERY BUSY, AND THEY HAVE TO SEE AND GO THROUGH A DUE PROCESS ON ALL OF THOSE PERMITTING.
I JUST WANTED TO LAY SOME OF THE GROUNDWORK AROUND THAT IN CASE WE DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO LATER.
ANY QUESTIONS OR ANY DISCUSSION YOU WANT TO HAVE LATER?
>> VERY WELL. LEADBETTER SITE PLANNING.
I ALREADY MENTIONED THAT STAKEHOLDER FEEDBACK WAS A HUGE EFFORT.
THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING OUR CONSULTANTS AT LSW AND MACKAY SPOSITO. THEY'VE BEEN WONDERFUL.
WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO CONTINUING OUR WORK ON THAT OVER THE SUMMER, AND THAT WAS A BIG PUSH.
THE STAKEHOLDER INPUT WE NEEDED TO GET DONE BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
IT COULDN'T IMPEDE UPON THE S SCHOOL YEAR.
THERE'S A LOT OF WORK THAT NEEDS TO GET FOLLOWING THAT EFFORT.
THEY'LL BE WORKING ON THAT OVER THE SUMMER.
AS TRACY HAD MENTIONED, WE'RE TARGETING THE END OF OCTOBER OR MID OCTOBER ROUGHLY FOR A FINAL REPORT, SO EXCITED ABOUT THAT WORK.
[01:25:01]
IT'S PRETTY PRETTY AWESOME.'24/'25 BUDGET REMINDER, BUDGET WORKSHOP NEXT MEETING.
BUT JOHN DID MENTION OF THE DEMOGRAPHER STUDY.
I'VE INTEGRATED THAT INFORMATION INTO THAT PRESENTATION.
>> WE MOVE ON. BUDGET STATUS REPORT FOR APRIL.
WELL, AS YOU KNOW, APRIL'S ONE OF THOSE INTERESTING MONTHS WHERE WE'RE COLLECTING PROPERTY TAXES, TENDS TO INCREASE, WELL, IT'S A PEAK RIGHT THEN, APRIL AND OCTOBER.
YOU SEE THAT INFUSION OF REVENUES IN THE GENERAL FUND FOR OUR OPERATIONS LEVY, OUR DEBT SERVICE, COVER OUR BONDS, AND THEN OUR CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND FOR OUR CAPITAL LEVY THAT INCLUDES TECH AND OUR CAPITAL MAINTENANCE PROJECT.
ALSO IN APRIL WHAT HAPPENS IS, IN THE SPRING IS THAT THE STATE STARTS TRUING UP CERTAIN FUNDING.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT SCHOOLS NEVER REALLY KNOW WHAT THE TRUE-UP'S GOING TO BE IS IN TRANSPORTATION.
IT WAS GOOD THIS YEAR WITH 600,000, WHICH WAS VERY HELPFUL FOR THE PROGRAM BECAUSE IT'S DIFFICULT TO BREAK EVEN WITH TRANSPORTATION TO BE HONEST.
WE TEND TO SUBSIDIZE IT WITH LEVY FUNDS, AND SO THIS IS HELPFUL TO BRIDGE THAT GAP.
ON THE EXPENDITURE SIDE OF THE HOUSE, IT'S JUST ANOTHER MONTH AND WE START TO SEE, WHAT DIRECTION ARE WE HEADED? STARTING TO SEE AN UPTICK IN SOME PERSONNEL COST TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR THAT WE HAVEN'T REALLY FACTORED INTO OUR PROJECTION UP TO THIS POINT.
AGAIN, IT'S ANOTHER MONTH OF EXPERIENCE, AND SO IT STARTS TO PUSH THAT TREND UP.
RIGHT NOW, WHAT WE ARE ANTICIPATING IS THAT WE WILL EXHAUST THE BOARD AUTHORIZED BUDGET OF 121.8 MILLION.
IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT WE'RE OUT OF MONEY TODAY, IT JUST MEANS THAT THE AMOUNT THAT YOU'VE AUTHORIZED TO BE SPENT IN THE GENERAL FUND, WE'RE EXPECTING AUGUST 31 TO BE EXHAUSTED.
WE NEED TO PIVOT AT SOME POINT AND BRING FORWARD A BUDGET EXTENSION TO THE SCHOOL BOARD.
IT'S VERY SIMILAR PROCESS TO PASSING THE BUDGET; THERE'S AN ADVERTISEMENT, THERE'S A HEARING, ALL OF THAT, THERE'S A RESOLUTION.
WE HAD TALKED ABOUT THIS BEING A POSSIBILITY.
IT'S INEVITABLE GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES, WE WERE BUILDING A BUDGET BEFORE WE HAD SETTLED A CONTRACT, BEFORE WE SAW AN ENROLLMENT DECLINE.
ALL THE SIGNS WERE THERE THAT WE MIGHT BE HERE.
BUT WE HELD HELP THAT THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION MIGHT BE PRODUCTIVE, JUST WASN'T QUITE AS PRODUCTIVE AS WE HAD HOPED.
ALL THOSE THINGS COME INTO PLAY.
EXPECT THAT IN THE FUTURE, WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IT.
DON'T WANT TO NECESSARILY JUST RUSH INTO THAT, WE ARE GOING TO TAKE OUR TIME AND REALLY TRY TO BE PRECISE ABOUT HOW MUCH WE MIGHT NEED TO GO UP.
THAT'S OUR DESIRE, AT LEAST TO TRY AND BE AS ACCURATE AS WE CAN.
>> WE JUST HAVE TO DO THAT BY THE END OF THE BUDGET CYCLE, SO BETWEEN NOW AND AUGUST 31ST.
WE'LL TALK ABOUT THAT AT OUR BUDGET WORKSHOP AS WELL, POTENTIALLY?
>> BECAUSE THAT AFFECTS BEGINNING FUND BALANCE FOR NEXT YEAR, SO THERE'S A NATURAL TIE THERE, YOU BET.
BEFORE I MOVE ON, WANTED TO SEE IF THERE'S ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS.
ON THE OTHER FUNDS, TRANSPORTATION VEHICLE, DEBT SERVICE, CAPITAL PROJECTS, ASB, ALL THOSE ARE VERY NORMAL ACTIVITY, NOTHING REALLY TO NOTE OTHER THAN WHAT I HAD PREVIOUSLY MENTION AROUND PROPERTY TAXES GOING UP, AND THAT'S ALL BUDGETED AND PLANNED FOR. OH, YES.
>> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION. ANY MORE SPEND DOWN ON THE ASB ACCOUNT? MY YEARLY QUESTION.
>> THIS IS A VERY GOOD QUESTION.
THIS IS OFTEN WHEN IT DOES GET SPENT DOWN TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR, AND THEN WE START TO SEE, IS THERE FUNDRAISING THAT HAPPENS OR FEES COLLECTED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE YEAR? THAT DOES AFFECT THINGS.
[01:30:01]
WE'LL SAY THAT FOR THE MOST PART, THEY'RE DONE FUNDRAISING FOR THE YEAR, SO WE DO EXPECT TO DRAW DOWN TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR.IS IT TRENDING SIGNIFICANTLY? NO. I THINK IT'S PRETTY MUCH A HOLDING PATTERN.
THEY TEND TO HAVE AROUND A MILLION DOLLARS, ROUGHLY FUND BALANCE.
>> I WONDER IF THAT'S SIMILAR TO WHAT IS A NORMAL AMOUNT TO HAVE IN THERE.
I KNOW WE'VE HAD ASB COME PRESENT TO US BEFORE, AND WE TALK BECAUSE THAT'S NOT OUR MONEY, IT'S THE KIDS MONEY, AND SO WE KNOW THAT.
BUT IT JUST SEEMS LIKE A MILLION DOLLAR IS A LOT OF MONEY THAT THEY ALWAYS SEEM TO HAVE IN THERE.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT OTHER SCHOOLS' ASB AMOUNTS ARE OR IF IT'S WORTH THEM JUST TALKING TO US ABOUT IT AGAIN.
>> THAT'D BE A GOOD THING TO FIND OUT JUST BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE THEY END THE YEAR WITH A MILLION DOLLARS IN THEIR FUND EVERY YEAR, AND SO THERE'S THAT MONEY THAT SHOULD BE GOING TO THE STUDENTS WHO ARE PAYING INTO IT DURING THEIR TIME IN SCHOOL.
IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THEY NEED TO BE USING THAT TO ENHANCE THEIR EXPERIENCES.
>> WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS BEFORE, BUT I THINK IT IS A REALLY GOOD TIME TO REVISIT THAT WHOLE THING BECAUSE AS I'VE SHARED WITH YOU ALL BEFORE, BUT I THINK IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN BEFORE YOUR TIME, JOHN, WHEN I WAS LEADING KAYAK, WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT WE COULD TAP INTO THE ASB FUND TO PAY FOR LUNCHES, FOR A FIELD TRIP WHEN WE WENT TO THE CAPITOL TO TALK TO OUR LEGISLATORS.
I WONDER WHEN NEW CLUBS ARE SET UP IF THEY ARE GIVEN THE ASB 101.
YOU HAVE GIVEN INTO THIS FUND, HERE IS WHAT BEING A PART OF THIS MEANS FOR YOU, AND THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE ENTITLED TO OR YOU HAVE ACCESS TO, ONLY BECAUSE I TOO WONDER WHY A MILLION VERSUS HALF OF THAT COULD BE ROLLED OVER.
IT JUST MAKES ME WONDER, ARE THERE GROUPS THAT JUST DON'T KNOW AND AREN'T UTILIZING IT, OR ARE THEY FUNDRAISING FOR THEMSELVES AND JUST USING THAT AND THEY'RE NOT TAPPING INTO WHAT COULD BE POSSIBLY FOR THEIRS?
>> BUT ALSO OF THAT MILLION DOLLARS, IT'S NOT ALL CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.
IT'S LIKE THERE'S A BUNCH OF OTHERS, SO THERE COULD BE CERTAIN SCHOOLS COULD HAVE WAY MORE THAN OTHERS. WE JUST HAVE WONDERINGS.
>> MAY I [INAUDIBLE] THE BAND DOES A TRIP EVERY TWO YEARS, AND SO THAT MONEY ROLLS OVER SAVING FOR THAT, BUT A MILLION DOLLARS IS A LOT OF MONEY THAT COULD BE HELPING OUR KIDDOS.
>> WHAT I THINK WE NEED TO HAVE IS PROBABLY A STAFF REPORT THAT WILL INVOLVE ASB ADVISORS AND WHAT HAVE YOU.
YOU RAISED THIS APPROPRIATELY.
IT IS THE STUDENTS MONEY, SO WE DO TRY TO ENCOURAGE PROPER MANAGEMENT.
ON THE OTHER SIDE, IT IS NICE THAT THEY'RE NOT IN THE NEGATIVE, SO IT COULD BE WORSE.
THERE ARE POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES, AND MAYBE THEY'RE PERHAPS A LITTLE CONSERVATIVE WITH THEIR MODEL AND COULD PERHAPS GO WITH MAYBE LESS FUNDRAISING OR SOMETHING AND MORE SPENDING OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
WE TALKED ABOUT THIS OVERALL, BUT THIS IS REALLY A BREAKDOWN OF OUR REVENUES AND OUR EXPENDITURES.
I WILL SAY OVERALL, THE BOARD APPROVES AN EXPENDITURE LEVEL, BUT WE ALSO BUDGET REVENUES.
I'LL SAY THIS, BOTH ARE VERY CLOSE, AND PROBABLY SOME OF THE CLOSEST MARGINS THAT I THINK WE'VE HAD SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE.
PART OF THAT IS SOME OF THE PREDICTABILITY OF GOING IN FROM ONE BUDGET TO THE NEXT.
SOMETIMES IT'S JUST GOOD FORTUNE, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE STATE'S GOING TO DO AND YOU TRY AND ANTICIPATE WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
WE'LL SEE COMING INTO THIS '24, '25 BUDGET IF WE GET IT THIS CLOSE OR NOT.
THEN THE NEXT COUPLE OF SLIDES ARE JUST A BREAKDOWN OF JUST THE DIFFERENT REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE CATEGORIES.
BUT REALLY, I WILL SAY ON BOTH OF THESE SLIDES IN THE FAR RIGHT COLUMN, THE BUDGET VARIANCE PERCENTAGE, IT'S NOT MUCH.
IT'S PRETTY SMALL NUMBERS GENERALLY.
THE UPTICK HERE IN STATE SPECIAL PURPOSE THAT WE
[01:35:01]
HAD SOME INCREASE IN SPECIAL ED ENROLLMENT.IF YOU RECALL, WE HAD A VERY HIGH SAFETY NET AWARD THIS YEAR.
BUT IF YOU RECALL, SAFETY NET HITS BOTH SIDES OF THE LEDGER.
YOU DON'T GET THE MONEY UNLESS YOU'VE SPENT IT, SO IT WASHES OUT, BUT AT THE SAME NOTE, YOU'RE GOING TO SEE THAT BE A LITTLE HIGHER IN IMPACT EXPENDITURES AS WELL AS REVENUES.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? THAT'S ALL I HAVE.
>> WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO OUR NEXT MONTH BUDGET WORKSHOP IN JUNE.
[10. OPEN AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION]
IT IS THE OUT-OF-FIELD TEACHING ASSIGNMENT.I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS HAD A CHANCE, HOPEFULLY, TO LOOK AT THAT IN YOUR BOARD DOCS ALREADY.
MARILYN PUT A LETTER IN THERE ABOUT THE OUT-OF-FIELD TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS, SOMETHING THAT'S COMMON THAT WE'VE APPROVED BEFORE, BUT SHE LISTED THEM ALL IN THE REASONINGS FOR THAT.
IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, I'D OPEN THE FLOOR OR I'D ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE THAT.
>> I'D MOVE TO ACCEPT THE OUT-OF-FIELD TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS.
>> MARYLAND IS NOT HERE TODAY.
>> WAS THAT A MOTION FROM CONNIE?
>> YEAH. MOTION FROM CONNIE SECONDED BY ERICA.
>> THANK YOU. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR?
NEXT, WE WILL MOVE ON TO ITEM 11A AND B, PROBABLY.
[11. EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMIC, SOCIAL AND LIFELONG LEARNING]
I BELIEVE THAT'S LISA GRECIOUS.ARE YOU UP TO TALK ABOUT SOME CURRICULUM ADOPTION?
>> LISA WHILE GAIL IS SITTING UP, DO WE HAVE HER AP PRE-CALCULUS IN OUR DISTRICT YET? AP PRE-CALCULUS? AWESOME. THANK YOU.
>> NOW IT'S ON. THANKS. WHERE WE'RE TALKING SO MUCH ABOUT STUDENTS.
WHAT I HAVE TONIGHT FOR YOU IS ALSO ABOUT STUDENTS, AND IT IS THE MATERIALS THAT WE PUT IN FRONT OF STUDENTS IN ORDER TO ENHANCE, EXTEND, AND ENGAGE THEIR LEARNING.
TONIGHT, I'M HERE WITH TWO CORE ADOPTIONS.
ONE OF THEM IS A DOUBLE-DOUBLE.
THEY ARE AP CHEMISTRY, AND THEN AP CALCULUS BC, AND MULTI-VARIABLE CALCULUS.
AS ALWAYS, WE START WITH A REMINDER OF THE BOARD POLICY AND PROCEDURE THAT GUIDES THE ADOPTION OF MATERIALS, AND IT'S THE REMINDER THAT FIRST OF ALL, THE CORE MATERIALS ARE INITIALLY SELECTED BY CERTIFICATED STAFF AS IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE PARTICULAR ADOPTION THAT WE'RE DOING AT THE TIME.
THEN THE RECOMMENDATION OF CORE MATERIALS COMES FROM THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE.
TEACHERS WHO ARE ON THE CORE COMMITTEE AS WELL AS FACILITATORS WILL COME AND PRESENT TO IMC, THE IMC WILL ASK QUESTIONS, DIG INTO IT A LITTLE BIT MORE.
IF THEY ARE CONFIDENT THAT THE PROCESS AND PROCEDURE HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED, THEN THEY WILL RECOMMEND THE CURRICULUM TO THE BOARD FOR YOUR ADOPTION, AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE TONIGHT.
BOTH OF THESE THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT TONIGHT WENT THROUGH INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON MAY 16.
AS WE LOOK AT THE SLIDES, WHICH I KNOW YOU'VE HAD A CHANCE TO SEE, WHAT YOU SEE AND WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE TWO THAT WE HAVE TONIGHT IS THAT THEY ARE SINGLE-TEACHER COURSES.
IN OTHER WORDS, THERE'S ONLY ONE TEACHER WHO TEACHES THE COURSES THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT TONIGHT.
WHAT YOU SEE ARE THE TEACHERS' WORK.
IN THIS CASE, BOTH OF THESE COURSES ARE OFFERED AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL ONLY AT THIS TIME, AND TOM MORRIS LEADS THE ADOPTION THERE.
THERE'S ALWAYS SOMEONE AT THE SCHOOL WHO IS WORKING WITH THE CERTIFICATED TEACHERS TO BE ABLE TO WORK THROUGH THE PROCESS OF ADOPTION.
WE ARE REPLACING A 2009 AP CHEMISTRY TEXTBOOK,
[01:40:01]
WHICH IS CHEMISTRY, THE CENTRAL SCIENCE 11E.ON THE COLLEGE BOARD'S POLICY FOR AP CHEMISTRY, WE ARE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE REVIEWING OFTEN ENOUGH THAT WE ARE USING A TEXT THAT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS, AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT EXACTLY ON THAT SCHEDULE, AND I THINK YOU WILL FIND THAT THAT IS A COMMON CHALLENGE IN DISTRICTS AROUND THE STATE AND THE NATION AS WELL.
THE 10-YEAR GUIDELINE IS NOT FOR EVERY SINGLE COURSE.
YOU WILL SEE IT FOR CHEMISTRY, BUT IT IS NOT THE SAME FOR THE AP CALC BC THAT WE'LL LOOK AT NEXT.
A LOT OF THAT HAS TO DO WITH HOW OFTEN CONTENT MIGHT BE EXPECTED TO CHANGE WHEN THERE'S NEW LEARNING AND SUCH.
THE NEW TEXT THAT IS BEING RECOMMENDED IS ACTUALLY THE UPDATE OF THE ONE THAT WE'RE CURRENTLY USING.
IT IS ON THE AP COLLEGE BOARD LIST OF RECOMMENDED TEXTS FOR THIS COURSE.
IN TERMS OF HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL THE ADOPTION BENEFIT, IT'S APPROXIMATELY 50 STUDENTS PER YEAR.
GENERALLY, THAT CLASS IS RUNNING FROM A LOW OF ABOUT 30 TO A HIGH OF ABOUT 75.
CURRENTLY, THERE'S ABOUT 60 STUDENTS THAT ARE FORECAST FOR NEXT YEAR.
THE TWO TEXTS THAT WERE REVIEWED WHERE BROWN AND LAM AND THEN ZOOM DAL.
THE PROCESS THAT WAS USED WAS FIRST TO IDENTIFY HOW THE DECISION WOULD BE MADE.
CONSENSUS AND MAJORITY VOTE ARE THE SAME THING IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE BECAUSE WE HAVE ONE TEACHER IN EACH OF THESE COURSES.
THEN IT'S TO IDENTIFY OR CREATE A RUBRIC.
WE ALWAYS START FROM A RUBRIC FOR WHAT IS IT THAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR.
IT IS NOT SIMPLY JUST PREFERENCE, BUT IT IS WHAT DOES THE TEXT OFFER.
WHAT'S THE ABILITY OF THE MATERIALS TO HELP DIFFERENTIATE LEARNING AND SO ON.
THEN CORE RESOURCES ARE IDENTIFIED FOR REVIEW, AND THEN THE EVALUATION HAPPENS.
ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS THAT WE HAVE IS STUDENT VOICE IS INCLUDED IN THE SELECTION PROCESS, AND THEN THE TEACHER OR TEACHER GROUP RECOMMENDS THE ADOPTION TO THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE.
THE TEXT THAT IS BEING RECOMMENDED FOR ADOPTION IS THE 15TH EDITION OF THE TEXT THAT IS CURRENTLY IN THE 11TH EDITION IN USE AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL CALLED CHEMISTRY THE CENTRAL SCIENCE.
SOME OF THE REASONS THAT WERE GIVEN FOR THIS TEXT WAS THAT IT'S HIGHLY READABLE.
IT WAS SPECIFICALLY UPDATED AND DESIGNED FOR THE AP CHEMISTRY COURSE.
IT'S ONE OF THE DOMINANT TEXTS THAT'S USED.
THERE'S NO NEED FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE IT IS BASICALLY AN ENHANCEMENT OF THE TEXT THAT'S CURRENTLY IN USE.
YOU AND I KNOW THIS IS TOO SMALL TO READ ON SCREEN, BUT I KNOW YOU CAN SEE IT ON YOUR SCREENS.
THE CRITERIA THAT WAS USED ALONG WITH THE SCORING FOR THIS PARTICULAR TEXTBOOK.
IN TERMS OF STUDENT FEEDBACK, THIS TEACHER ASKED STUDENTS TO READ A SECTION OF THE TEXTBOOK ON CALORIMETRY, WHICH I LEARNED HOW TO SAY, AND THAT WAS FUN, AND THEN WRITE THEIR THOUGHTS DOWN ABOUT THE TEXT.
STUDENTS LIKE ZOOM DAL USE OF A REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE IN THAT PARTICULAR CHAPTER.
ZOOM DAL IS THE ONE THAT WAS NOT SELECTED, BUT THEY REALLY APPRECIATED HOW PRECISE THE READING WAS FOR BROWN AND LAM AND THE FORMATTING OF THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS GIVEN.
AS YOU KNOW, WITH AP CLASSES, PRACTICE PROBLEMS ARE A BIG DEAL.
THE STUDENT FEEDBACK WAS THAT NEITHER TEXT HAD A CLEAR MAJORITY, BUT MOST OF THE STUDENTS THOUGHT EITHER TEXT WOULD WORK.
THAT ADOPTION, WE'RE RECOMMENDING 66 PURCHASED COPIES, WHICH INCLUDES DIGITAL LICENSES FOR SIX YEARS, AND THE COST IS $13,165.02.
THE REQUEST IS IN ALIGNMENT WITH BOARD POLICY AND PROCEDURE 2020, A MOTION TO ADOPT CHEMISTRY, THE CENTRAL SCIENCE 15TH EDITION AS THE AP CHEMISTRY CORE CURRICULUM.
I'LL PAUSE THERE BEFORE WE GO ON TO THE CALCULUS BC.
THAT'S ITEM 11A IN THE AGENDA IF YOU HAVE ANY DISCUSSION OR QUESTIONS FOR LISA?
>> I WOULD MOVE TO APPROVE THE ADOPTION OF THE CORE CURRICULUM FOR AP CHEMISTRY.
I GUESS WE'RE DOING IT IN TWO SEPARATE MOTIONS.
FUNDS FOR THIS CURRICULUM WILL COME FROM THE CURRICULUM BUDGET.
>> SECONDED BY ERICA. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR?
>> ANY OPPOSED? NONE. MOTION PASSES, AND WITH THAT,
[01:45:04]
WE'LL MOVE ON TO 11B, WHICH IS THE CALCULUS AND MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS.>> INDEED. CALCULUS WAS A CLASS THAT I TOOK EIGHT O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING, MY FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE.
[LAUGHTER] I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THAT TO ANYBODY.
I'M VERY PROUD THAT WE OFFERED THESE CLASSES HERE.
ONCE AGAIN, YOU SEE THE METHOD THAT WAS USED BY THIS TEACHER TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY WHICH BOOKS TO REVIEW.
AGAIN, THE BOOKS THAT WERE SELECTED FOR REVIEW ARE ALL RECOMMENDED AS TEXTS FOR THIS CLASS.
CALC BC, WHICH IS AGAIN AN AP CLASS.
THE TWO AUTHORS THAT THIS TEACHER RECOMMENDED LOOKING AT WERE STEWART AND LARSON AND STEWART CALCULUS 9A AND YOU'LL NOTICE LARSON CALCULUS 11E AND 12E, WERE THE THREE BOOKS THAT WERE REVIEWED.
THEN IN THE SAME VEIN AS THE TEACHER FOR APKM, THE GATHERING OF STUDENT VOICE AND SO THIS TEACHER ASKED FOR VOLUNTEERS TO READ THROUGH EACH TEXT AND THEN WORK THROUGH SOME OF THE CORRESPONDING PROBLEMS SO THAT THEY WOULD GET FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS AS WELL.
THESE ARE THE THREE TEXTS THAT WERE REVIEWED.
THE ONE TEXT THAT THE TEACHER IS RECOMMENDING AND WENT THROUGH IMC IS THE ONE IN THE MIDDLE, WHICH IS CALCULUS 11E AND NOT 12E.
THIS WAS ONE CONCERN THE TEACHER HAD AND IT HAD COME TO ME EARLY TO SAY, IS IT OKAY THAT I'M SELECTING AN EARLIER VERSION OF THIS TEXT AND NOT THE MOST CURRENT? WE KNOW THAT SOMETIMES THE MOST CURRENT ISN'T THE BEST TEXT, AND IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, THAT WAS TRUE.
SOME OF THE REASONS THAT THE 11E BOOK IS SELECTED, AND IT'S A 2016 PUBLISHING DATE IS IT ALIGNS MORE NATURALLY WITH THE COLLEGE BOARD CURRICULUM.
THERE ARE SOME APPS THAT GO WITH THE PROGRAM THAT STUDENTS ARE FINDING EXTREMELY HELPFUL, INCLUDING VIDEO SOLUTIONS, AND ABILITY TO SEE WORKED-OUT SOLUTIONS TO ODD-NUMBERED EXERCISE AND 24-7 ACCESS TO ONLINE TUTORS AND VIDEOS THAT EXPLAIN A CONCEPT OR PROOF.
THERE'S A LOT OF SUPPORT BUILT IN THAT A STUDENT CAN CHOOSE BASED ON WHAT THEY FEEL THEY NEED TO SUPPORT THEIR LEARNING.
>> THESE NEXT FEW SCREENS EXPLAIN A LITTLE BIT ABOUT EACH OF THOSE APPS.
THE VIDEO SOLUTIONS TO SELECTED EXERCISES, AND THIS IS THE ONE WHERE THE ODD NUMBERED EXERCISES.
THERE'S A QR CODE NEXT TO EACH OF THE PROBLEMS, AND IT TAKES THE STUDENTS TO A VIDEO WHERE THEY SEE THE PROBLEM SOLVED AND TALKED THROUGH, WHICH YOU CAN IMAGINE IS ALSO DIFFERENT THAN SEEING IT ON PAPER.
YOU CAN SEE THE STEPS, BUT WHEN YOU HEAR SOMEBODY WORKING THROUGH IT, THAT CAN BE MORE SUPPORTIVE OF STUDENTS LEARNING.
CALCCHAT.COM WORKED OUT SOLUTIONS TO ODD NUMBERED EXERCISES AND ACCESS TO ONLINE TUTORS.
THE STUDENTS FEEDBACK ON THE ONLINE TUTORS WAS GREAT.
HELPED STUDENTS WITH SOME OF THE CHALLENGES THAT THEY WERE EXPERIENCING.
THE LARSON CALCULUS.COM, SO VIDEOS THAT EXPLAIN OUR CONCEPT TO PROOF, ALONG WITH THE GRAPHICS THAT GO WITH IT THAT REALLY MAKE CALCULUS MORE VISIBLE TO STUDENTS.
THEN MATH GRAPHS.COM, THIS IS THE PART WHERE I HAD TO ASK SOME QUESTIONS.
ESSENTIALLY, THERE'S PRINCIPLES THAT ARE BUILDING THE CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING, BUT STUDENTS AREN'T DOING THE TEDIOUS WORK OF CREATING THE DISPLAY THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS.
THEY'RE WORKING WITH THAT DISPLAY.
IT ELIMINATES SOME OF THE BUSY WORK, SO STUDENTS CAN REALLY FOCUS ON THAT DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPT AND APPLICATION.
THIS IS THE CRITERIA AGAIN, AND YOU'LL SEE THAT THIS MATCHES THE ONE THAT WAS USED BEFORE, AND YOU SEE THE SCORES THAT ARE LISTED HERE.
THE TEACHER DID GO THROUGH ALL THREE BOOKS WITH THIS SCORING.
THIS IS THE BOOK THAT SCORED THE HIGHEST.
AS THE STUDENTS LOOK THROUGH THE SAMPLE TEXTBOOKS, THESE ARE A FEW OF THE REPRESENTATIVE STUDENT QUOTES.
"THE LARSON TEXT IS WAY MORE USER FRIENDLY FOR YOUR TYPICAL HIGH SCHOOL ADVANCED MATHS STUDENT.
THE QR CODES THAT LEAD DIRECTLY TO HELP VIDEOS ARE AWESOME, AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT I DO WITHOUT CALCCHAT."
[01:50:02]
THEN ANOTHER STUDENT WHO SAID THEY LIKE THE ORDER OF THE STEWART BOOK.THAT'S NOT THE ONE WE SELECTED, BUT LARSON BOOK STANDS OUT BY FAR FOR ITS BALANCED PROBLEM SETS AND ITS ONLINE SUPPORT LIKE CALCCHAT.
THEY ALSO LIKE THAT IT USED A LARGER SIZED FONT.
WE'RE FINDING THAT EVEN AS WE SAY THAT STUDENTS ARE DIGITAL NATIVES, THEY PREFER TEXTBOOKS, MUCH OF THE TIME AS WELL WITH DIGITAL SUPPORT.
THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS TEXT, IS THAT, IT APPLIES TO BOTH CLASSES.
IT'S A SINGLE TEXT THAT CAN BE USED FOR AP CALC BC AS WELL AS MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS.
AT THIS TIME, WE HAVE FORECASTED 61 STUDENTS FOR CALC BC AND 30 FOR MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS.
ALL STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO USE THE SAME BOOK.
CURIOUSLY, THEY HAVE ONE VERSION OF THIS THAT IS ONLY THE CALC BC BOOK, BUT IT COSTS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ONE THAT INCLUDES THE MULTIVARIABLE PIECE AS WELL.
IT'S A GREAT WAY ALSO THAT AS CLASS SIZES MAY SHIFT, THAT THE BOOKS CAN BE USED BY STUDENTS IN EITHER OF THOSE TWO CLASSES.
THE COST IS 199 PER TEXTBOOK FOR A TOTAL COST OF $19,850.25.
ONCE AGAIN, THE REQUEST IS IN ALIGNMENT WITH BOARD POLICY AND PROCEDURE 2020, A MOTION TO ADOPT CALCULUS 11E, LARSON AND EDWARDS, AS THE CORE CURRICULUM FOR AP CALCULUS BC AND MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS.
I LOVE ALL THE STUDENT INPUT THAT WE HAVE ON THESE, AND THE FACT THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT WANT TO HELP US PICK THESE MATH BOOKS.
IT SEEMS LIKE A GREAT THING FOR MATH CLUB OR KIDS WHO ARE REALLY INTO THAT.
ALSO, ALL OF THE TOOLS THAT COME ALONG WITH THIS ONE, THE CALC CHAT AND SCAN THE QR CODE.
IT MAKES IT A LOT EASIER FOR KIDS DIFFERENT WAYS TO LEARN THINGS.
I APPRECIATE THAT IT HAS THAT, AND THAT THIS BOOK CAN BE USED TO TEACH TWO DIFFERENT CLASSES.
THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR RESEARCH ON THAT, AND THE COMMITTEE WHO DID THAT.
>> I WANT TO SAY THANKS TO THE COMMITTEE AS WELL.
I THINK IT'S INTERESTING THAT WE'RE PICKING AN OLDER VERSUS THE NEWER.
THAT JUST SHOWS US THE INTENTION OF THE COMMITTEE AND THE PRUDENCE THAT THEY ARE REVIEWING THE MATERIALS FOR STUDENTS TO BE THE BEST MATERIALS.
I APPRECIATE THAT, AND THANK YOU.
I'M READY TOO, UNLESS THERE'S MORE CONVERSATION.
>> THE COMMITTEE WITH THE STUDENTS, THE STUDENTS ARE THE CURRENT STUDENTS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AT CAMAS OR IS IT LIKE FORMER MATH STUDENTS? IF I MISSED IT, I'M SORRY. I DON'T REALLY MEAN TO.
SOME OF THE STUDENTS WHO WERE STUDENTS WHO TOOK CALC BC LAST YEAR AND SOME WERE CURRENT STUDENTS, AND SO IT WAS A MIX OF STUDENTS, WHICH WAS ALSO INTENTIONAL.
>> I WAS THINKING THAT WOULD BETTER TO GET AN OPINION FROM SOMEONE WHO'S TAKEN IT.
>> THERE'S NO OTHER DISCUSSION.
>> I'LL MOVE TO APPROVE THE ADOPTION OF THE CORE CURRICULUM FOR AP CALCULUS BC AND MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS.
FUNDS FOR THIS CURRICULUM WILL COME FROM THE CURRICULUM BUDGET.
>> THANK YOU, ERICA. DO YOU HAVE A SECOND?
>> MANY SECONDS. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR, AYE?
>> ANY OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES. THANK YOU.
[12. QUALITY FACILITIES AND RESOURCES]
>> THAT TAKES US DOWN TO ITEM 12A.
WE'RE GOING TO GO BACK TO TALK ABOUT THE US TENNIS ASSOCIATION, THE TENNIS COURTS AND THE PROPOSAL THAT I KNOW WE TALKED ABOUT AT OUR LAST WORKSHOP.
JASON, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE OTHER THAT YOU WANT TO TALK TO US ABOUT OR IF YOU JUST WANT US TO ASK QUESTIONS, IF WE HAVE ANY.
>> NO, I THINK, AS I MENTIONED IN MY REPORT, THERE'S A CERTAIN SEQUENCE OF EVENTS THAT MUST OCCUR FOR US TO COMPLY WITH THE APPROPRIATE AND APPLICABLE LAWS.
IN THE MEANTIME, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE DUE DILIGENCE OF THE PROJECT, AND WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH USTA.
WE'RE PRETTY CLOSE, I THINK TO HAVING A DRAFT AGREEMENT THAT WE'LL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE.
IT'S JUST NOT READY FOR THIS EVENING.
>> IF I CAN BE CLEAR, WE DID DISCUSS THIS AT OUR WORKSHOP LAST A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, BUT FOR THOSE WATCHING AT HOME, IF THEY DIDN'T WATCH, WHAT WE'RE ESSENTIALLY TALKING ABOUT IS JUST [OVERLAPPING] COVERING THE TENNIS COURTS, AND THAT USTA IS PUTTING UP A LOT OF MONEY FOR THIS,
[01:55:02]
AND IN THE END, THEY'RE GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE MAINTENANCE ON THE COURTS AND A BUNCH OF OTHER THINGS.>> THIS PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY WAS BORN THROUGH OF ALL THINGS AT A VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT.
WE HAD A USTA REPRESENTATIVE WHO APPROACHED OUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, AND ULTIMATELY, OUR PRINCIPAL SAYING, WE'VE BEEN THINKING OF WANTING TO COVER THE TENNIS COURTS AT CHS.
WHAT WE DISCOVERED, IS THAT, THE US TENNIS ASSOCIATION IS A NON-PROFIT, THAT YES, WELL, THEY PUT ON THE US OPEN IN NEW YORK, THE BIG ONE, THEIR TRUE MISSION IS ACTUALLY COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS AROUND THE US TO PROMOTE THE SPORT OF TENNIS.
HOW THEY DO THAT IS, THEY CREATE PARTNERSHIPS WITH SCHOOLS OR OTHER PARTNERS OUT THERE WHO MIGHT HAVE EXISTING COURTS, AND THEY COME IN AND SAY, WE WILL RESURFACE THEM, WE WILL COVER THEM IF WE CAN OPERATE A COMMUNITY BASED TENNIS PROGRAM ON YOUR PROPERTY THERE.
IT'S IMPORTANT THAT IT'S NON-PROFIT.
THIS IS NOT AN EXCLUSIVE CLUB.
WE WOULD NEVER ALLOW THAT ON OUR PROPERTY.
IT'S TRULY A NON-PROFIT BUSINESS MODEL THAT IS THERE TO HELP FOLKS WHO MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO PAY FOR COURT TIME OR MEMBERSHIP.
THEY HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THOSE TYPES OF THINGS, AND THEY WANT TO PROMOTE TENNIS.
WE'VE DONE QUITE A BIT OF WORK TO LOOK AT THAT, AND TO THEN GO, HOW CAN WE DO THAT BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T DONE THIS BEFORE.
WELL, LO AND BEHOLD, THERE IS ONE THAT IS ALREADY IN VANCOUVER.
I DIDN'T KNOW THIS, BUT USTA ACTUALLY RUNS THE TENNIS CENTER NEXT TO FORT VANCOUVER HIGH SCHOOL.
WE DID SOME MORE CHECKING AROUND.
MAYBE JUST NOT WELL KNOWN OR AT LEAST IT WASN'T WELL KNOWN TO ME, AND SO WE REALLY APPROACHED IT FROM THE LENS OF, WELL, LET'S LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS.
THERE'S ABOUT THREE DIFFERENT STRUCTURES THAT THEY TEND TO DO.
THERE'S OBVIOUSLY THE HIGHEST MODEL BRICK AND MORTAR, A MID MODEL, AND THEN THERE'S A DOME VERSION.
THIS IS REALLY LOOKING AT THE MOST AFFORDABLE, IF YOU WILL, WHICH IS A DOME COVERING OVER THE EIGHT TENNIS COURTS THAT ARE THERE.
OUR OBLIGATION OR CAPITAL CONTRIBUTION ON THE FRONT END IS TO HAVE A 20*40 BUILDING AS AN ENTRANCE WITH BATHROOMS, PRETTY MODEST LITTLE LOBBY, AND WE WOULD DEVELOP BEHIND THOSE TENNIS COURTS, ADDITIONAL PARKING AND BASICALLY A THROUGH INGRESS/EGRESS.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT IS, WE ALL KNOW THAT CHS IS ALREADY A BUSY CAMPUS, SO WE COULDN'T IMPACT THE EXISTING PARKING BECAUSE IT'S ALL TAKEN THERE.
I WAS JUST THERE TODAY. I HAD TO DRIVE AROUND JUST TO TRY AND FIND MYSELF A SPOT.
PART OF THIS IS TO ADD PARKING.
LET'S NOT IMPACT THE INSTRUCTIONAL DAY, BUT ALSO PROVIDE A SAFE MANNER TO GET ONTO CAMPUS AND ENTER THE TENNIS CENTER, PARK YOUR VEHICLE.
THE OTHER KEY COMPONENT TO THIS IS, OUR KIDS GET FIRST RIGHT TO THESE COURTS.
WE'RE NOT CHARGING OUR TENNIS TEAMS, THEY'RE NOT CHARGING OUR PE TO GO IN AND USE THE COURTS.
THAT'S PART OF THE AGREEMENT, IS THAT, THEY'LL WORK AROUND THOSE SCHEDULES AND MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE ADEQUATE COURT TIME.
THE REALITY IS, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE MORE COURT TIME THAN WHAT WE'VE EVER HAD BECAUSE, IN PARTICULAR, FOR THE GIRLS TENNIS, THEY'RE AT AN EXTREME DISADVANTAGE, BECAUSE THEIR SPORT, I THINK, IT'S MARCH.
>> THE WEATHER IN MARCH IS PRETTY UNPREDICTABLE.
TENNIS IS A NON CUT SPORT AS WELL.
I THINK WE HAVE OVER 90 OR 100 GIRLS ON THE TENNIS TEAM AND I'M NOT SURE HOW MANY BOYS, BUT IT'S AN EQUITY ISSUE,
[02:00:03]
BOYS GET A CHANCE TO PLAY IN THE FALL, THE WEATHER IS BETTER, THE GIRLS COME IN MARCH AND THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH A LOT OF CANCELLATION.THIS IS GOING TO GIVE THEM MORE COURT TIME THAN THEY'VE EVER HAD AND SOLVE A BUILT IN INEQUITY.
THEN ON TOP OF THAT, THEY'RE GOING TO COVER STAFFING, THIS CENTER.
THEY'LL HANDLE ALL THE HUMAN RESOURCES.
THEY'LL MAINTAIN THE COURTS, WHICH HONESTLY NEED TO BE RESURFACED, SO WE'RE AVOIDING THAT COST.
THEY'RE GOING TO BE DOING THAT.
THAT'S PART OF THE PARTNERSHIP IS THAT NOT ONLY IS THERE THE FRONT END CAPITAL CONTRIBUTION, WHICH IS ABOUT $2 TO EVERY $1 OF OURS AND WHAT WE'RE EXPECTING IS AROUND $1 MILLION INVESTMENT WOULD BE THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS PORTION THAT WOULD COME OUT OF THE CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND, NOT THE OPERATIONS OR THE GENERAL FUND, ACTUAL CAPITAL DOLLARS BEING USED FOR THIS.
THE ELEMENTS ARE THERE TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN AND SEE WHERE WE CAN TAKE THIS PROJECT WHERE WE HAVE TRULY A NONPROFIT COMING TO INVEST IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT AND IN OUR COMMUNITY.
IT'S NOT JUST FOR OUR KIDS, BUT ALSO OUR COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE BECAUSE AFTER SCHOOL HOURS AND SCHOOL EVENTS, THEY'LL BE ABLE TO SERVE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS WELL.
THAT'S REALLY WHERE IT'S AT FOR THEM, IS TO PROVIDE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES, WHICH THEY'LL BE DOING WITH OUR ELEMENTARY KIDS.
THEY'RE GOING TO START A TENNIS PROGRAM THERE.
THEY'RE WILLING TO WORK WITH OUR PE TEACHERS AND PROVIDE EQUIPMENT AND BALLS AND ALL THAT TYPE OF STUFF TO HELP THEM AND PROVIDE THEM OPPORTUNITIES.
THERE'S ALWAYS A TENNIS SECTION IN EVERY PE CLASS AND THEY WANT TO HELP WITH THAT.
IT'S A PRETTY NEAT OPPORTUNITY.
>> THANK YOU, JASON. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAD A QUICK LITTLE UPDATE OF WHAT WE'RE ACTUALLY DOING IN CASE PEOPLE DIDN'T CATCH OUR LAST BOARD MEETING TO DISCUSS IT.
I KNOW WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS SEVERAL TIMES, BUT I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE KNEW WHAT EXACTLY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.
I DIDN'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS HAD ANY MORE QUESTIONS FOR JASON ON THAT.
IF NOT, THERE IS A MOTION IN OUR BOARD PACKET THAT JASON IS LOOKING FOR TO MOVE US JUST TO THAT NEXT STEP.
THERE WILL BE MORE THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO APPROVE ALONG THE WAY, BUT THIS JUST GETS US TO SAY THAT WE'RE WILLING TO ENTER INTO DISCUSSIONS AND AGREEMENT WITH THEM.
>> I WILL MOVE TO APPROVE THE LEASE AND SERVICE AGREEMENT FOR THE UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION PACIFIC NORTHWEST SECTION USTA PNW AND TO AUTHORIZE DISTRICT STAFF TO TAKE ALL NECESSARY ACTIONS TO PURSUE AND FINALIZE THIS AGREEMENT.
THIS AGREEMENT WILL OUTLINE THE TERMS OF THE USTA PNW'S MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS OF THE CSD'S TENNIS FACILITY, INCLUDING POTENTIAL CAPITAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO ENHANCE THESE FACILITIES TO BENEFIT CSD STUDENTS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
ADDITIONALLY, THE SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTS THE DISTRICT STAFF TO PUBLISH A NOTICE IN A NEWSPAPER OF GENERAL CIRCULATION TO LEASE THE FOLLOWING REAL PROPERTY, EIGHT TENNIS COURTS LOCATED ON THE NORTH SIDE OF CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.
