[1. WORKSHOP - 4:30 PM]
[00:00:05]
WE'RE GOING TO START OUR WORKSHOP.
WE HAVE A COUPLE OF SUBSTITUTIONS HERE, SO BOMANI IS STUCK IN TRAFFIC.
SHE'S ON HER WAY HERE AS QUICKLY AS SHE CAN BE AND DR. ANZALONE IS A LITTLE UNDER THE WEATHER TODAY, SO ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT J QUEZ IS PINCH HITTING FOR HIM.
>> BUT YES, IT WORKS OUT WELL BECAUSE WE DO [OVERLAPPING] HAVE DERECK'S GOING TO BE DOING QUITE A BIT OF TODAY.
LET'S GO AHEAD AND JUST ROLL RIGHT INTO OUR FIRST ITEM,
[2. CULTURE]
WHICH IS A REVIEW OF THE ASB BUDGET, SO DERECK WILL TURN IT OVER TO YOU AND ANYBODY ELSE WHO'S GOING TO BE HELPING YOU OUT.>> GREAT, STEVE, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN COME UP TO THE SPEAKING AREA.
WE'LL SEE IF WE CAN GET THIS MICROPHONE TO WORK.
WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE ASB FUNDS AND HOPEFULLY SHARE THE STATUS OF THE FUNDS AND ESSENTIALLY, HOW DO WE COLLECT SOME OF THE MONEY, WHERE DOES IT GO, AND WHAT IS THE MONEY USED FOR? ONE OF THE GOALS WAS TO CONNECT THE PRESENTATION TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.
WHAT I'VE DONE IS I'VE PULLED OUT SOME OF THE GOAL ERRORS FROM THE STRATEGIC PLAN, AND I'VE UNDERLINED HOW I BELIEVE IT TIES IN.
IN THE FIRST ONE I FOUND WAS A CULTURE OF SAFETY AND BELONGING.
THE UNDERLYING SECTION HERE, WE CREATE THE CONDITIONS FOR DIGNITY AND BELONGING FOR ALL.
PART OF THAT IS AS YOU KNOW, THE ASB SYSTEM IS STUDENT, OWNED, OPERATED, AND REALLY IT'S THEIR MONEY, AND THEY DECIDE HOW TO DEPLOY THAT TO MAKE THEIR EXPERIENCE IN SCHOOLS MORE ENRICHING.
THE SECOND AREA, RESPONSIVE PATHWAYS, GUIDED BY STUDENT VOICE.
WE CREATE PATHWAYS AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT ENGAGE EACH STUDENT AND EXPAND THEIR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE.
ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS REALLY THE STUDENT VOICE PIECE OF ASB IS EXTREMELY POWERFUL.
A LOT OF TIMES WE MIGHT EVEN HAVE TO HELP REIN THEM IN A LITTLE BIT FROM THEIR ASPIRATIONS.
THOSE ARE A COUPLE OF THE CONNECTIONS FOR TODAY TO THIS PRESENTATION.
THE OTHER THING IS JUST WANT TO THROW THE POLICY OUT THERE, WHICH I KNOW THE BOARD IS WELL AWARE OF JUST SO THE PUBLIC AND EVERYBODY ELSE WATCHING IS.
I'LL JUST READ THIS LITTLE CLIP RIGHT HERE FROM POLICY 3510.
AN ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY WILL BE A FORMAL ORGANIZATION OF STUDENTS, INCLUDING SUB-COMPONENTS, OR AFFILIATED STUDENT GROUPS.
EACH ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY WILL SUBMIT A CONSTITUTION, AND BYLAWS FOR BOARD APPROVAL.
THE CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS WILL IDENTIFY HOW STUDENT ACTIVITIES BECOME APPROVED.
AS STUDENT BODY ACTIVITIES AND ESTABLISHED STANDARDS FOR THEIR SUPERVISION GOVERNANCE AND FINANCING.
OBVIOUSLY, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE FINANCING COMPONENT OF THAT TODAY.
BUT THAT TIES IN REALLY STRONGLY TO THESE ARE STUDENT RUN ORGANIZATIONS, CLUBS, OBVIOUSLY WITH ADULT SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT.
BUT THIS ASB FUNDS ARE DEFINITELY THE STUDENTS MONEY.
I'M GOING TO LET STEVEN TALK A LOT, BUT I WILL GO OVER THE LAYOUT AND THE DIFFERENT SLIDES AND WE'RE HERE TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.
PART OF WHAT WE WERE ASKED TO DO IS SHARE THE FUND BALANCE.
THERE'S A COMMON A THREAD THAT THERE'S A LOT OF MONEY IN THE ASP ACCOUNT, AND IT'S ALWAYS THE STUDENTS MONEY.
BUT WE WANTED TO SHARE WHERE IS THAT MONEY AT AND THEN HOW IS IT DEPLOYED BY OUR STUDENTS TO SUPPORT THEIR ENDEAVORS.
I SHARE THE FUND BALANCE AS OF JULY 31ST, 2024.
CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, AS YOU CAN SEE, IS THE LARGEST HOLDER OF MOST OF THE ASB MONEY, AND THEY HAVE ABOUT $580,000 AS OF THE END OF JULY.
THEN SKY RIDGE AND LIBERTY BOTH ARE IN THE 83 AND $88,000 RANGE.
WE ALSO HAVE MONEY AT ODYSSEY AND DISCOVERY.
MOST OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, THEIR STUDENT MONEY IS IN A PTO, WHICH IS A DIFFERENT ORGANIZATION.
REALLY THE INTENT WAS TO GO THROUGH THE LARGEST ACCOUNTS, AND THEN I'LL HAVE STEVEN TALK SPECIFICALLY ABOUT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.
WE'LL START THE SMALLEST OF THE THREE.
LIBERTY FUND BALANCE IS ABOUT $83,000 AS OF THE END OF JULY.
YOU CAN SEE WHAT I DID IS, I PULLED OUT THE THREE LARGEST ACCOUNTS.
OF THAT $83,000, YOU CAN SEE THAT APPROXIMATELY LOWER $60,000 IN THREE ACCOUNTS.
THE DRAMA ACCOUNT, ASB CARDS, AND ATHLETIC USER FEES.
I DON'T KNOW IF STEVEN, CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT THE ATHLETIC USER FEES ARE USED FOR?
>> YEAH. TYPICALLY, WE'D SEE THOSE MONIES AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL, ESPECIALLY, THEY'RE GOING TO GO ALLOCATED TO PAYING REFEREES, AND THEN UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT.
THOSE ARE GOING TO BE THE PLACES WHERE WE'D SPEND THAT FUND BALANCE.
>> TYPICALLY, IS THAT A REVENUE YOU BRING IN CLOSE TO WHAT YOU SPEND? HOW DOES THAT WORK?
>> IT WAS SURPRISING TO ME TO SEE THAT AMOUNT.
[00:05:03]
HAVING WORKED AT LIBERTY FOR A LONG TIME.I'M CURIOUS AND WE CAN ASK MORE QUESTIONS DOWN THERE ON THAT PART? THAT'S USUALLY AN AMOUNT THAT IS CLOSE TO, IF NOT ZERO AT THE END OF EACH YEAR.
REFEREE COSTS HAVE GONE UP QUITE A BIT THE LAST FEW YEARS.
THEY'VE GOTTEN I THINK PAY INCREASES THEY DESERVE, BUT IT'S HIT BUDGETS SIGNIFICANTLY, SO THAT ONE DID SURPRISE ME A LITTLE BIT.
THEN THE ASP CARDS TYPICALLY GO TO SUPPORT ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS, DANCES, THINGS LIKE THAT THAT HAPPEN THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR.
>> WHERE WOULD TRANSPORTATION COME FROM OUT OF THAT? WAS THAT BEYOND THE USER FEE?
>> TRANSPORTATION FOR ATHLETICS IS SEPARATE FROM ASP MONEY.
ASP ISN'T SPENT ON TRANSPORTATION FOR ATHLETICS.
NOW THERE ARE CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES THAT ARE NON-ATHLETICS THAT DO PAY FOR THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION, SO YOU'LL SEE THAT ON DIFFERENT LINE ITEMS FOR LIKE SAY, WHEN QUI WENT OUT TO NEW YORK, THAT'S GOING TO BE SOMETHING THEY FUND RAISE FOR AND NOT SOMETHING THAT'S PAID OUT OF A TRANSPORTATION BUDGET.
>> THEN THE SAME REPORT COMING FROM SKY RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, THEY HAD ABOUT $88,000 AT THE END OF JULY.
ONCE AGAIN, DRAMA AND PART OF IT IS DRAMA IS EXPENSIVE WHEN YOU BUILD THE SETS AND ALL OF THE COMPONENTS TO PUTTING OFF A PERFORMANCE, IS VERY EXPENSIVE.
THEY TYPICALLY TURN THROUGH A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF A SCHOOL YEAR IN DOING THEIR PERFORMANCES.
>> I'D SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT BOOK BOOK AND DRAMA, THOSE TWO YOU'RE GOING TO SEE OFTEN THAT HAVE POTENTIALLY LARGE BALANCES AS THEY HAVE NOT PURCHASED THE YEARBOOKS YET, OR THEY'RE RIGHT ABOUT TO DO A HUGE PURCHASE, OR PUT A DEPOSIT DOWN ON WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN THAT YEAR.
THOSE ARE ACCOUNTS THAT YOU CAN SEE BALLOON AT TIMES AND THEY'LL GO DOWN QUICKLY, BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO PUT A $30,000 DEPOSIT DOWN ON YOUR YEARBOOKS.
>> THEN I WANT TO THERE'S A LOT OF SPECIAL ATTENTION PUT ON CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE IT'S THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE DOLLARS THAT ARE RAISED AND EXPENDED IN OUR ASB ACCOUNTS COME FROM THAT BUILDING.
CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, I WANT TO JUST SHARE A LITTLE SNAPSHOT.
THERE'S 142 DIFFERENT SUB ACCOUNTS AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, 33 DIRECTLY SUPPORT ATHLETIC TEAMS SO EVERY ATHLETIC TEAM HAS AN ASB ACCOUNT FOR FUND RAISING PURPOSES, TYPICALLY IN EXPENDITURES.
FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THE THE GIRLS TENNIS TEAM AS A FUNDRAISER.
IT GOES INTO THAT ACCOUNT AND THEN THEY HAVE MONEY FOR TRAVEL BAGS OR T-SHIRTS OR WHATEVER THEY DECIDE TO PURCHASE.
THERE ARE 81 ACCOUNTS, DIRECTLY SUPPORTING STUDENT CLUBS.
I'VE JUST LISTED A FEW OF THE 81, SO YOU HAVE AN IDEA.
BUT AT THE CHESS CLUB, KEY CLUB, ROCKETRY CLUB, FIRST ROBOTICS, OR DECA, AS A CTE DIRECTOR, I HAVE SUPPORTED DECA AND FIRST ROBOTICS, AND THOSE ARE SOME OF OUR LARGEST.
THEY BRING IN A LOT OF MONEY AND THEY SPEND A LOT OF MONEY EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
THOSE ARE A COUPLE OF THOSE 81 ACCOUNTS.
EIGHT ACCOUNTS SUPPORT CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE BAND, YEAR BOOK, EACH OF THE CLASSES, THE CLASS OF 2025, 26, THEY ALL HAVE A SEPARATE ACCOUNT, AND THEY USE THAT MONEY FOR CLASS ACTIVITIES.
THAT'S A REAL QUICK OVERVIEW, AND THEN I'M GOING TO LET STEVEN TAKE OVER ON THIS SLIDE.
>> WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE END OF MAY BALANCES, WE'RE JUST GETTING CLOSER TO WRAPPING UP AT THE END OF THE YEAR, SO WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE IS, THE ATHLETIC ADMISSIONS AND THE ATHLETIC USER FEES.
HISTORICALLY, WE HAVE TRIED NOT TO TOUCH THOSE IN THE YEAR THAT WE'RE COLLECTING THOSE TO THEN FUND OURSELVES FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
I WILL SAY THAT THIS WILL BE THE FIRST YEAR.
I THINK WE WILL BE TAPPING INTO THOSE FUNDS, BECAUSE OUR POST-SEASON TRAVEL EXPENSES HAVE GOTTEN TO BE A LOT GREATER THAN WHAT THEY'VE BEEN IN THE PAST.
WE WERE OVER $100,000 LAST YEAR.
GREAT. WE HAD A LOT OF PROGRAMS MAKE IT ATHLETICALLY TO STATE PLAYOFFS AND THINGS LIKE THAT, BUT THE HOTELS FOR THAT, AND ANY FOOD ASSOCIATED WITH THAT, ACCORDING TO WHAT WE CAN GIVE THEM FOR EACH MEAL, ALL COME OUT OF THAT ACCOUNT.
WHEN YOU HAVE TEAMS GOING FAR IN THE POST-SEASON, YOU'RE PAYING FOR MORE AND MORE OF THAT AND HONESTLY, IT'S TEAMS LIKE GOLF THAT GO AND PLAY IN A THREE DAY TOURNAMENT.
THEY'RE STAYING IN HOTELS FOR FOUR OR FIVE DAYS, BECAUSE THEY GET THEIR A DAY EARLY TO DO THEIR PRACTICE ROUND.
THAT ACCRUE A LOT OF EXPENSE WITH THOSE, SO THIS IS A YEAR WHERE DESAN I SAT DOWN.
WHEN YOU SEE, I THINK THE NEXT SLIDE IS GOING TO SAY, IF WE CAN TOGGLE BACK AND FORTH THROUGH ATHLETICS AS 151.
WE JUST TOOK ALL THAT MONEY AT THE END OF MAY, AND IN JULY, IT GOT DUMPED INTO GENERAL ATHLETICS.
NOW IF YOU WERE TO LOOK AT IT TODAY, IT'S ALREADY DIVVIED OUT TO POST SEASON ATHLETICS OFFICIALS, WHICH IS $60,000 - $70,000 A YEAR, AND THEN OUR RENTALS, WHICH IS THE POOL, OUR GOLFING RENTALS DOWN AT CAMAS MEADOWS, AS WELL AS GYMNASTICS DOWN AT VEGA.
WE HAVE $12,000 IN THAT ACCOUNT AS IT SITS TODAY, SO THIS MONEY'S MOVED THROUGH THESE ACCOUNTS RAPIDLY AS WE START THE YEAR.
THERE'S NOT A BIG FUND SITTING IN ONE ACCOUNT LIKE THAT.
HOWEVER, IT IS DISPERSED OVER THIS VARIETY OF ACCOUNTS.
>> I'LL SPEAK A LITTLE BIT TO THE GENERAL YOU SAW ON THE PREVIOUS SLIDE AS WELL.
WE HAVE GENERAL STUDENT BODY, 44,000, AND THEN AS OF JULY 31ST, IT WAS 74,000.
[00:10:03]
A LOT OF TIMES THAT MONEY IS USED FOR THE STARTUP OF NEW CLUBS, OR TO SUPPORT CLUBS WHO MAY HAVE GONE INTO THE RED THE PREVIOUS YEAR.THAT'S HAPPENED QUITE A FEW TIMES.
IF A TEAM LIKE STEVEN SAID, QUALIFIED A LOT OF STUDENTS, FOR EXAMPLE, STATE DECA, THEN THE STATE DECA WILL OFTEN THE STUDENT BODY WILL AUTHORIZE DOLLARS TO BE ROLLED INTO THE DECA ACCOUNT TO SUPPORT THAT DEFICIT.
THE OTHER THING IS WHEN STUDENTS COME UP WITH AN IDEA FOR A NEW CLUB, I CAN'T THINK OF A NEW ONE FROM LAST YEAR, BUT.
>> WE HAVE THE CYCLING CLUB STARTED UP.
>> CYCLING CLUB. OFTEN THE GENERAL STUDENT BODY WILL GIVE THAT CLUB SOME SEED MONEY.
HEY, HERE'S $1,000 AND THE STUDENTS VOTE ON IT FROM THE GENERAL FUND TO START THAT CLUB TO GIVE THEM SOME FINANCIAL FOOTING TO BE ABLE TO START THEIR ORGANIZATION OF THEIR CLUB.
THAT'S ONE WAY THAT THE GENERAL STUDENT BODY IS USED SIGNIFICANTLY.
>> UP TO THAT, TODAY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A SOUND SYSTEM.
WE DO MOVIE NIGHTS ALL THE TIME. WE NEED TO BUY A SOUND SYSTEM THAT ACTUALLY WORKS WELL WITH THE TECHNOLOGY WE HAVE.
THE LAST ONE WASN'T WORKING WELL AND KEPT NOT WORKING IN THE MIDDLE OF A MOVIE, WHICH WASN'T A GREAT EXPERIENCE.
WE'RE LOOKING AT LIKE A $5,000 SOUND SYSTEM.
WELL, THAT'S WHERE WE WOULD GO ASK IF ASP WANTS TO SPEND PART OF THAT MONEY TO BUY A SOUND SYSTEM THAT CAN SUPPORT EVENTS LIKE THAT THAT WE WOULD DO.
BUT THERE'S A REQUEST FORM, THEY FILL OUT.
THEY TAKE IT TO ASP, AT AN ASP COUNCIL MEETING, THE KIDS TALK ABOUT IT AND VOTE ON ITS MEETINGS.
THEN ONE OTHER THING I'LL JUST MENTIONED, SORRY, SLIDES HERE.
ONE OTHER THING I'LL MENTION IS THAT, ONE OF THE REASONS THAT THE CHS FUND IS A LARGE AND B CYCLES THROUGH A LOT OF MONEY IS BECAUSE WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN OUR CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES.
I'VE WORKED AT FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND IT'S NO HIGH SCHOOL I'VE WORKED AT HAS BEEN CLOSE TO THE PARTICIPATION LEVELS THAT WE HAVE IN CAMAS.
WE CONSISTENTLY HAVE OUR FIRST ROBOTICS TEAM, WE HAVE ONE OF THE LARGEST TEAMS IN THE STATE.
OUR SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM IS, I THINK THE LARGEST TEAM IN THE STATE, DECA.
WE CONSISTENTLY HAVE 200 STUDENTS IN THAT.
I THINK STEVEN MIGHT ECHO THAT FROM ATHLETICS.
>> ATHLETICS, WE HAD 700 REGISTRATIONS IN THE FALL, REGISTRATIONS, MEANING THAT KIDS TO PARTICIPATE IN SOMETHING, AND THAT IS AN UNHEARD OF NUMBER.
WHEN I TALK TO OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE AREA, IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE TO WHAT THEY'RE EXPERIENCING.
IT'S JUST KIDS WANT TO BE A PART OF SOMETHING, THAT'S PRETTY COOL.
THAT'S AWESOME AND THESE FUNDS GO TO SUPPORT THOSE THINGS.
>> WE HAVE ALSO A VERY GENEROUS COMMUNITY.
I MEAN, CONSISTENTLY WHEN WE HAVE FUND RAISERS, THE FUNDRAISERS DO WELL.
>> I'D SAY THAT WITHIN THOSE SUB ACCOUNTS, SO YOU'LL SEE THE ATHLETIC ONES AND THEN THE CLUB ONES.
A TYPICALLY ARE FUNDRAISED BY THOSE TEAMS CLUBS SPECIFICALLY FOR PURPOSES THAT THEY HAVE ON THE ATHLETIC SIDE.
IT'S USUALLY THE NON-ESSENTIAL THINGS OUT OF THOSE ATHLETIC SUBCATEGORIES.
IF GIRLS SOCCER HAS SOMETHING THEY REALLY WANT TO DO OR PURCHASE, THEY'RE GOING TO FUND RAISE FOR THAT.
IF IT'S AN ESSENTIAL ITEM LIKE A UNIFORM OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, THAT WOULD COME OUT OF GENERAL.
WE TRY TO GIVE YOU THAT UP AND IF IT'S ESSENTIAL, WE'RE GOING TO TRY TO THAT TO THE GENERAL ATHLETICS PIECE.
IF IT'S NOT ESSENTIAL, THEN WE'LL GO TO THE CLUB OR ACTIVITY FUND OR TO A BOOSTER GROUP OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
>> THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE PREPARED AND HAVE THE REST OF TIME FOR QUESTIONS.
>> I BECAUSE IT WAS CURIOUS, DO WE HAVE A LIST OF ALL OF THE DIFFERENT NON-PROFITS OR BOOSTER GROUPS THAT SUPPORT? I KNOW THERE'S A LOT, AND I JUST DIDN'T KNOW DO WE TRACK THAT AT ALL? LIKE IF SOCCER SAYS, WE WANT TO HAVE A SOCCER BOOSTER OR.
>> FOR ATHLETICS, WE'VE MADE IT SO THERE'S ONE BOOSTER GROUP.
THERE'S ONE GROUP THAT SUPPORTS ALL OF IT BECAUSE IT WAS I THINK PREVIOUSLY HAD THAT.
SOLID ACTUALLY MADE A LOT OF SENSE THERE.
THERE'S THE CAMAS MUSIC BOOSTERS, AND THEN THERE'S THE CAMAS LOOK AT THAT MORE ABOUT THIS ONE.
>> THAT'S A STEM BOOSTER CLUB THAT SUPPORTS FIRST ROBOTICS AND SCIENCE LIMPIAD.
THEY'VE ALSO, I BELIEVE, ARE BRINGING IN THE ROCKETRY CLUB SO CLUBS WHO ARE INTERESTED CAN JOIN THE STEM.
>> I'M STILL I'M ON THE ROBOTICS BOOSTER AND I KNOW THAT IS FOR ANY STEM BASE.
BUT I DIDN'T KNOW I KNEW WE DID THAT WITH ATHLETICS, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW MUSIC STARTED THEIRS UP IF GROUPS DO IF WE TRY TO COORDINATE THOSE JUST SO WE KNOW EVERYONE'S ALIGNED IN TERMS OF WHO DOES WHAT?
>> I KNOW WHEN THAT MUSIC WAS STARTING UP THAT WERE CONVERSATIONS GOT TO HAP WITH THE FOLKS WHO ARE STARTING THAT.
TRYING TO CREATE NOT ONLY ALIGNMENT IN PROCESSES, BUT ALSO WHEN THEY'RE RUNNING BOSS [INAUDIBLE] WOULD RUN THEIR TRYING TO HAVE SUPPORT WITH EACH OTHER.
WE ACTUALLY DONATED ITEMS ACROSS TO EACH OTHER FOR EVENT [INAUDIBLE].
>> I GUESS THIS MIGHT BE MORE OF A COMMENT THAN A QUESTION.
I WAS SURPRISED WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE I'VE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN THE DIVISION BETWEEN WHAT'S ASB VERSUS WHAT IS ATHLETIC.
YOU'RE SAYING THAT THE COST FOR REFEREES COMES OUT OF ASB?
>> YEAH. REFEREES AND THE OTHER ONE THAT SURPRISE A LOT OF PEOPLE'S RENTALS.
[00:15:03]
LIKE THE POOL RENTAL COMES OUT OF ASP.TRANSPORTATION IS NOT THAT SEPARATE.
>> THEN WHAT WOULD COME OUT THEN WHAT WOULD THE ATHLETIC BUDGET BE PAYING FOR? WE'RE TALKING YOU SAID ESSENTIAL.
SO UNIFORMS, OBVIOUSLY, THE, LIKE, EQUIPMENT, COACHES, SALARIES, THAT STUFF.
>> THOSE THINGS ARE THE BIG TICKET ITEMS.
>> MY QUESTION IS ONE OF THE REASONS THAT WE ASKED FOR THIS LEVEL OF DETAIL IS IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY YEAR, THE ASB FUND IS THAT ENDS THE YEAR AT $1 MILLION THEREABOUTS.
THEN WE BRING IN MORE MONEY AND WE SPEND MORE MONEY, AND THEN WE'RE BACK AT $1 MILLION.
SO THE QUESTION WAS, IS THERE MONEY AND HAVE YOU FOUND MONEY WALLOWING IN SOME ACCOUNTS, OR IS IT LITERALLY WE GO THROUGH THAT AND REPLENISH IT AND THAT'S WHERE WE END?
ONE, I HOPE THAT YOU'RE STARTING TO SEE THIS OVER THE YEARS.
I THINK THAT WAS ONE THING THAT WAS CLEAR TO ME WHEN I CAME UP TO CHS IS THAT WE NEED TO START SPENDING DOWN THE ASP.
THAT WAY THE MONEY COMING IN IS THE MONEY GOING OUT TO THE KIDS.
I BELIEVE IN THAT PHILOSOPHY, I BELIEVE IN AT LIBERTY WHEN I WAS THE LEADERSHIP ASB TEACHER.
THE OTHER PIECE IS WHEN WE REWROTE THE CONSTITUTION LAST YEAR, IF A CLUB IS INACTIVE FOR ONE FULL SCHOOL YEAR, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE THE FUNDS FROM THAT CLUB AND PUT IT INTO A SEED MONEY ACCOUNT FOR NEW CLUBS THAT START UP IN THE FUTURE.
THEN IT'S TAKING THE MONEY THAT'S NO LONGER BEING UTILIZED, PUTTING THAT IN ONE ACCOUNT, AND THEN NOW GROUPS WHO START UP CAN APPLY FOR THOSE FUNDS TO GET USED.
THAT'S WAY THAT MONEY'S GOING TO WHATEVER THE BEST INTEREST IS FOR THE SOON RATE.
>> ALSO TO RESPOND TO THAT. THE ACCOUNT BALANCE IS 580 NOW.
THAT WAS THE SNAPSHOT AT THE END OF THE FISCAL TIME OF SCHOOL.
IN MY HISTORY, I DIDN'T HAVE AN EXACT NUMBER, SO MY APOLOGIES, DIDN'T GET FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE ENOUGH, BUT THAT IS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN I RECALL FROM THESE PRESENTATIONS.
IT WAS OVER $1 MILLION MULTIPLE TIMES.
SO I KNOW IT'S DOWN AND I CAN GET THAT DATA FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE FOR YOU.
>> BUT THE $1 MILLION WASN'T JUST DHS.
I BELIEVE I THINK IT WAS JUST ASB FUND.
LOOKING AT, YOU KNOW, CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL AND THE TWO MIDDLE SCHOOLS IS 87 SOMETHING AND THAT WAS MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS JUST MAKING SURE THAT THE KIDS WHO ARE PUTTING MONEY IN, THEY'RE USING THAT MONEY TO BENEFIT THOSE STUDENTS.
>> MY HOPE IS THAT WE'RE NOT SAVING MONEY FOR STORM LADY TO BE SPENT NOW.
I THINK THAT IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE WORKING WITH DES ON A DAILY BASIS OVER AT CHS, WE'RE STARTING TO FEEL LIKE WE'RE GETTING TO A LEVEL WHERE WE'RE STARTING TO FEEL A LITTLE BIT UNCOMFORTABLE WITH LIKE THAT'S A GOOD THING.
WE'RE AT THIS PLACE NOW WHERE WE'RE STARTING TO WORK IT DOWN TO, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE MONEY OUT OF THE ADMISSIONS FOR THIS YEAR IN ORDER TO PAY FOR WHAT WE'RE DOING.
THAT'S WHERE WE REALLY NEED TO BE.
KNOWING THAT THAT'S A LITTLE SCARY BECAUSE IF SOMETHING HAPPENS AND WE AREN'T CREATING THE REVENUE STREAMS THAT WE NORMALLY HAVE.
THAT COULD AFFECT STUDENT EXPERIENCES TOO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT POST SEASON AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
>> THIS ALL HAS BEEN REALLY HELPFUL.
LIKE WHAT CONNIE SAID, I THINK WE'VE BEEN WATCHING THIS FUND FOR A LONG TIME.
IT'S ALWAYS BEEN $1 MILLION, IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN AROUND THAT.
BUT THIS IS HELPFUL TO SEE HOW IT BREAKS OUT BECAUSE WE KNOW ALL THE MONEY IS NOT AT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL, BUT TO SEE THAT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL IS THIS AND THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS HAVE THAT.
IT'S HELPFUL TO KNOW THAT IT'S NOT ALL IN ONE PLACE.
THAT WAS HELPFUL TO SEE AND ALSO TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU USE SOME OF IT FOR THE NEXT YEAR.
THERE HAS TO BE MONEY LEFT IN THERE BECAUSE YOU NEED IT TO START.
THAT ALSO IS HELPFUL INFORMATION.
I LIKED ABOUT THE CLUBS.M YOU SAID THAT IF THEY'RE INACTIVE FOR A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME, THEN THEY MOVE THAT.
THAT'S A GREAT BECAUSE WE APPROVE CLUBS ALL THE TIME, WHICH IS FABULOUS.
I LOVE WHEN WE'RE APPROVING CLUBS.
BUT EACH OF THOSE CLUBS THEN HAVE A SUB ACCOUNT AND GET SEED MONEY.
EVEN IF IT'S SOMETIMES THERE'S A CHESS CLUB OR A MATH CLUB WHICH YOU WOULDN'T THINK WOULD HAVE HUGE EXPENSES, BUT THERE IS EXPENSES TO EVERY CLUB THAT WE APPROVE.
>> EVERY CLUB YOU APPROVED, YES.
EVERY CLUB THAT GETS APPROVED HERE IS ABLE TO ACCESS FUNDS.
THERE ARE CLUBS THAT START THAT DON'T NEED FUNDS AND THEY'RE MORE STUDENT DRIVEN AND LOW KEY.
THE 61 LINE ITEMS THAT DEREK WAS TALKING ABOUT, I THINK IT WAS 61.
THOSE ARE ALL CLUBS THAT ARE FUNCTIONING WITH THE BUDGET AND WOULD HAVE ACCESS TO GET THOSE FUNDS IF THEY NEEDED THEM.
I THINK WE'VE GOT A LOT OF GROUPS AND A LOT OF KIDS DOING GREAT THINGS, AND IT'S TO GET MONEY IN FRONT OF THEM.
THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE TALKED ABOUT EXTENSIVELY WITH THE KIDS LAST YEAR WHEN WE WERE REWRITING THE CONSTITUTION WAS, WHAT DO WE DO CAUSE WE HAD COUNSEL THAT WE'RE SITTING THERE THAT HADN'T BEEN TOUCHED IN FOUR OR FIVE YEARS, AND WE WANTED TO REPURPOSE THOSE FUNDS IN A SPECIFIC WAY RATHER THAN JUST GOING INTO GENERAL ASP.
>> DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW LARGE THAT SEED FUND IS RIGHT NOW?
>> I THINK IT'S $8,000 -10,000. YEAH. IT'S NOT HUGE.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR THE M? ONE OTHER THING I WAS JUST CURIOUS ABOUT, IT WAS SOMETHING THAT YOU SAID, DEREK.
[00:20:01]
WERE YOU SAYING THAT AT SOME OF THE OTHER SCHOOLS LIKE DISCOVERY AND HAYS, THAT THEY RELY MORE ON THEIR PTO THAN ASB?>> AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THE OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS DO THEY HAVE FUNCTION ASPS AND THEY DIDN'T MAKE THE TOP THREE.
>> I BELIEVE FROM MEMORY, I THINK THE DISCOVERY TOTAL ACCOUNT BALANCE WAS $20,000.
JUST BY VIRTUE OF THE MAJORITY OF OUR STUDENTS BEING AT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL, THEIR ACCOUNTS ARE LARGER.
>> WELL, IN SOME OF THOSE CLUBS, I THINK, ALSO, ROBOTICS IS PROBABLY A REALLY GOOD EXAMPLE OF A CLUB THAT'S DISTRICT WIDE, BUT THEIR FUNDS ARE ALL HOUSED AT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL.
HOWEVER, THERE'S MORE DISCOVERY KIDS, I THINK ACCESSING THOSE FUNDS THAN ANY SCHOOL.
WHEN WE HAVE DISTRICT WIDE PROGRAMS LIKE THAT.
>> WHEN THEY'RE DISTRICT WIDE, THEY'RE HOUSED AT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR EITHER OF THEM? THANK YOU FOR COMING IN AND DOING THAT.
IT'S APPRECIATED. WE'LL EXCUSE STEVEN, BUT DEREK'S GOING TO HANG AROUND.
GIVE US JUST A SECOND TO SWITCH PRESENTATIONS HERE AND WE'LL BRING UP THE FOLKS
[3. LEARNING]
WHO ARE ON OUR SUMMER SCHOOL REVIEW PRESENTATION.YOU CAN STEP ON UP TO THE DAYS.
>> I JUST PUSH THE BUTTON, MAKE GREEN.
I HAVE A MUCH EASIER ROLE THIS TIME. THANK YOU.
BUT I'M GOING TO JUST INTRODUCE EVAN LUSTIG, WHO IS OUR SUMMER SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR, AND I'LL LET HIM INTRODUCE AND TALK ABOUT HIS TEAM.
I SEE GENERALLY COMING IN NOT GOING TO MAKE IT A SOCCER PRACTICE.
EVAN RAN OUR SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO HIM.
I'M EVAN, THIRD GRADE TEACHER AT WOODBURN ELEMENTARY AND OUR SUMMER SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR.
BIG CHANGES THIS YEAR AND SUPER EXCITING.
WE HAVE JULIE HIDINGSFELDER HERE AS WELL.
>> I TEACH AT SKY RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND I'M THE HIGH SCHOOL COORDINATOR, AND IS AWESOME.
>> COULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS JOB WITHOUT.
>> WE'LL GO OVER THIS IS OUR AGENDA FOR TONIGHT.
WE HAVE SOME WIDE WE HAVE SUMMER SCHOOL AND SOME BUDGET NUTS AND BOLTS, AND THEN SOME SUMMARIES OVER ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND WE'LL END WITH SOME HOPES FOR OUR FUTURE FOR SUMMER SCHOOL AT CAMERA SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WE HAVE SUMMER SCHOOL FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS FOR OUR ELEMENTARY LEVEL, WE CALL IT MORE OF A SUMMER READING PROGRAM THAN A SUMMER SCHOOL BECAUSE WE REALLY EMPHASIZE LITERACY RIGHT NOW.
IN FACT, THE WAY THAT WE INVITE STUDENTS IS WE TAKE THE DATA FOR MIDDLE OF YEAR SCREENING THROUGH AMPLIFY AND M CLASS, AND OUR STUDENTS WHO SCORE IN THE WELL BELOW RANGE ARE THE ONLY STUDENTS WHO ARE INVITED.
IT'S REALLY A SUMMER READING PROGRAM.
THEN THROUGH THE LAST FEW YEARS OF BOTH TEACHING AT SUMMER SCHOOL AND THEN THIS YEAR BEING THE PRINCIPAL, WE CONTINUED TO EMPHASIZE SEL AS A MAJOR COMPONENT BECAUSE A LOT OF OUR LEARNERS ARE COMING IN AND NEEDING SOME HELP IN THAT AREA.
THE FIRST YEAR, WE REALLY FOCUSED ONLY ON LITERACY AND LEARNED THAT WE WERE MISSING A MAJOR COMPONENT TO SUPPORT THESE STUDENTS.
THE MAJOR GOAL NOT ONLY IS TO INCREASE THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THESE LEARNERS, BUT REALLY TO DECREASE THAT SUMMER SLUMP BECAUSE OUR DAYS ARE SHORT AND THERE ARE ONLY 16 OF THEM.
IF WE CAN GET STUDENTS TO LOVE READING AND LOVE BEING AT SCHOOL, THAT'S THE WIN.
THEN THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, WE WORK TO PROVIDE INCREASED PATHWAYS FOR STUDENTS TO GRADUATE.
WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO ARE COMING FOR CREDIT RECOVERY, AND WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO ARE COMING FOR CREDIT ADVANCEMENT.
WE HAD A LOT OF STUDENTS SHOW UP THIS YEAR.
THEN WE'LL GO OVER THE BUDGET NUTS AND BOLTS HERE.
WELL, WE HAD ONE FUNDING SOURCE THIS YEAR IN THE PAST, THERE WAS THE ALE GRANT THAT SUPPORTED SUMMER SCHOOL, AND THAT WAS GONE THIS YEAR.
OUR REVENUE WAS HIGH SCHOOL TUITION.
WHAT DAN HAD DONE LAST YEAR IS RAISED THE ORIGINAL CREDIT FEE TO $200 PER CREDIT AND LEFT THE RECOVERY CREDIT FEE TO 150.
THEN ANY FUNDING THAT WE WEREN'T ABLE TO HAVE THROUGH THE HIGH SCHOOL, CAMA SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPPORTED.
WE CONTINUE TO BELIEVE THAT ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS SHOULD BE FREE, ESPECIALLY FOR OUR K3 STUDENTS.
I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S GOING TO CHANGE IN THE FUTURE, BUT HAVE SOME FEELINGS ABOUT THAT.
WE DID DECIDE AT THE LAST MINUTE, PROBABLY SOMETIME IN MAY OR JUNE THAT WE NEEDED TO ADD KINDERGARTEN TO OUR ROSTER.
WITH NO MAJOR ADDITIONAL FUNDING COMING, WE DID REALLOCATE THE FUNDING FOR THE BOOK MOBIUS, AND THAT DID PAY FOR ONE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER AND ONE KINDERGARTEN INSTRUCTIONAL PARENT, AND THEN CAMA SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPPORTED WITH THE ADDITIONAL.
[00:25:03]
TOTAL PROGRAM COSTS AROUND $212,000.OUR HIGH SCHOOL, THE LAST THEY LOOKED WAS $102,000 OF REVENUE, WHICH WAS SIGNIFICANT.
HERE'S MORE OF THAT BREAKDOWN.
THE HIGH SCHOOL COST FOR STAFFING OF 10 TEACHERS WAS AROUND $80,000.
OUR COORDINATOR, JULIE STARTS WORKING IN MARCH?
>> SORRY. I WOULD SAY EARLIER THAN THAT.
>> YES. HER HOURS AND HER TIME STARTS THEN AND I DON'T KNOW, ARE YOU STILL FIELDING E MAILS TOO?
>> EVERY PENNY THAT THAT COST IS SO WORTH IT, OUR ELEMENTARY COSTS AROUND $63,000, AND THAT'S WITH BUT WHERE THERE ARE EIGHT TEACHERS AND EIGHT PAIRS, AND THEN OUR COORDINATOR IS AROUND $10,000 AS WELL.
I INCLUDED THE NURSES THERE BECAUSE WE HAD TWO OF THEM, BEING AT TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.
WE HAD TO HAVE TWO NURSES AND NEXT YEAR BEING AT WHEN WE'LL HAVE ONE, BUT THAT WAS AROUND $10,000.
OUR SUPPLIES INCREASED A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE BEING AT HELEN BALLER THE LAST FEW YEARS, THEY HAD NOTICED THAT, HEY, THOSE ARE OUR PAPER CLIPS AND OUR STAPLES AND OUR TAPES.
WE WERE ABLE TO GO BUY THOSE THINGS FOR ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS SO THAT THOSE ARE NOW SUMMER SCHOOL MATERIALS, AND HELEN BALLER CAN KEEP THEIRS.
THEIR SUPPLIES FULL FOR WHEN THEY RETURN IN THE FALL.
PRINTING WAS AROUND $1,500, NOTHING SPECIAL THERE EXCEPT FOR A MAJOR SHOUT-OUT TO ANGELA ANGELA DAVIS.
SHE CAME BACK ONE DAY AFTER SHE WAS DONE WORKING TO RUN SOME PRINT ORDERS FOR OUR ELEMENTARY TEAM BECAUSE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS USE A LOT OF PAPER, A LOT OF PRINTOUTS, AND SHE SAVED THE DAY.
I WAS SUPER AWESOME HAVING HER THERE.
ROTATION. YOU CAN SEE $33,000.
AGAIN, HAVING IT HOUSED AT TWO SO VERY DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, MADE IT PRETTY EXPENSIVE BECAUSE WE WERE SERVING STUDENTS ALL AROUND THE DISTRICT AND TAKING THEM TO TWO DIFFERENT SPOTS.
IN THE PAST, WE HAD BEEN AT LIBERTY AND HELEN BALLER, AND SO IT WASN'T QUITE AS SIGNIFICANT.
MY BUDGET WAS AROUND $10,000 FOR MY STIPEND.
WE PAID DOCTOR DAN TO HELP ME OUT AROUND $5,000.
THE ADMIN TRANSFER IS A ONE TIME THING.
WE'RE NOT TRANSFERRING ANYONE OVER. I'M GOING NOWHERE.
BUT HE WAS SUPER HELPFUL, LOTS OF MEETINGS, LOTS OF E MAILS, LOTS OF PHONE CALLS, CRAY.
THEN OVERALL, THE TOTAL COSTS AROUND $213,000.
I TALKED TO FOOD SERVICES, AND THEY SAID THAT IT WAS NOT SUPER EXPENSIVE THIS YEAR BECAUSE THEY USED SURPLUS FOOD.
ANYTHING THAT WASN'T EATEN, WE WENT AT. THAT WAS PRETTY CHEAP.
I WAS TOLD THAT WE'LL CONTINUE THAT PROCESS AS WELL.
THAT'S GREAT. ANY QUESTIONS ON BUDGET?
>> CAN I ASK JUST A LOGISTIC QUESTION, I THINK.
SO ON THE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, HOW MANY DAYS A WEEK ARE THEY IN? DO THEY COME IN A WEEK? FOUR DAY.
WE HAVE TRANSPORTATION FOUR DAYS A WEEK FOR ALL OF THE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS.
>> THERE'S 110,000 THAT THE DISTRICT PAID FOR.
DO WE FEEL LIKE THAT'S A FAIRLY STEADY NUMBER THAT WOULD COST US AROUND THAT EVERY YEAR?
>> I CAN LOOK UP THE HISTORY OF THAT.
I KNOW THIS YEAR'S BUDGET, BUT I CAN LOOK THAT UP.
>> BECAUSE, I KNOW THERE'S DIFFERENCES IF WE HAVE TWO LOCATIONS VERSUS ONE BUS.
SO WE HAVE A LITTLE CONTROL OVER THAT, BUT OTHERWISE, THERE'S SOME FIXED COSTS TO DOING SUMMER SCHOOL.
>> DEPENDS ON ESPECIALLY AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, HOW MANY GRADES WE SERVE.
IF WE SERVE FEWER GRADES, WE COULD HAVE MAYBE JUST THREE TEACHERS INSTEAD OF EIGHT.
MY FUTURE PLANNING IS TO HOUSE EVERYTHING AT DISCOVERY.
I WOULD LOVE TO LIMIT THE COST OF FOOD, LIMIT THE COST OF TRANSPORTATION, AND I THINK LIMIT THE NURSING, HAVING ONE NURSE ONLY.
THEN IF JULIE AND I ARE BOTH AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL, THAT'S ONE LESS COORDINATOR.
I CAN SERVE AS COORDINATOR IN ADMIN.
WE CAN CUT A LOT OF MONEY OUT OF THE TABLE THERE OUT OF THE BUDGET THERE, AND THAT WOULD ALLOW US TO CONTINUE TO SERVE ELEMENTARY.
>> THAT WOULD BE GREAT TO KNOW WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE WHAT DOLLAR AMOUNT.
>> I JUST ADD THAT THE ELEMENTARY WAS REALLY NEW AS PART OF THE PANDEMIC.
IN MY HISTORY, I HAD WORKING IN MULTIPLE HIGH SCHOOLS.
IT WAS CREDIT RECOVERY AND CREDIT ADVANCEMENT.
>> BUT WE DEFINITELY HAVE SOME DATA, I THINK OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS. WE CAN PULL.
>> DEREK YOU WRITING THAT DOWN?
>> I'D ALSO JUST BET I'M SORRY.
I'VE BEEN I'M STILL OUT OF SHAPE FROM TEACHING.
SUMMER I STILL HAVE MY SUMMER VOICE.
WHEN WE TALK ABOUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S FOR WHAT IT COSTS THIS YEAR.
IT WAS ABOUT A 50-50 SPLIT BETWEEN THE DISTRICT FUNDS AND THE TUITION.
[00:30:05]
HAS THAT RATIO BEEN SIMILAR I KNOW THAT WE LOST LIKE DID YOU SAY IT WAS ALE DOLLARS OR WAS IT SR FUNDS THAT.THEN THAT 100,000 THAT THE DISTRICT IS CONT IS THAT COMING OUT OF LEVY FUNDS THEN OR MAYBE THAT'S A JON QUESTION.
>> IS IT I THINK THAT'S A JASON QUESTION.
I WOULD ESTIMATE THAT YES IT IS L LIFE FUNDS, BUT HE WOULD KNOW FOR SURE.
>> I WAS GOING NOT TO KILL THE BUZZ LATER BECAUSE I KNOW YOU HAVE OTHER DATA AND THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS, BUT THERE'S A COST SAVINGS, BUT IF YOU CAN GET THE ENROLLMENT RATE UP, BECAUSE I KNOW YOU TALK LATER ABOUT THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS OFFERED TO.
YOU'VE GOT THIS BUDGET NUMBER OF WHAT YOU SPENT, EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD HAVE SOME SAVINGS, YOU COULD ALSO GET MORE STUDENTS IF YOU GET ENROLLMENT UP, YOU MAY STILL GET ENROLLMENT UP AND GET YOUR COST DOWN.
>> FOR IF WE WERE ABLE TO MORE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?
>> WELL, NO, I'M SAYING THE ELEMENTARY BECAUSE I THINK IN THE FUTURE SLIDE, YOU TALK TO THE NUMBER THAT YOU INVITED, THE NUMBER THAT ATTENDED.
IF WE CAN GET THAT NUMBER UP AND HOW'S IT IN ONE LOCATION, YOU CAN STILL KEEP COST DOWN AND GET MORE PEOPLE.
>> ELEMENTARY STUDENTS DON'T PAY ANY MONEY.
>> I KNOW THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING IF THEY DON'T PAY THAT THEY COST.
THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT IS IF WE CAN GET ELEMENTARY
BUT I KNOW WHEN I LOOKED AT I'M LIKE, THERE'S A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO CENTRAL SITE BECAUSE YOU LOWER YOUR COSTS, BUT IF YOU CAN GET MORE ELEMENTARY AT YOUR COST, WE'LL GO BACK UP TO THAT POINT, BUT THAT'S A GOOD THING BECAUSE THIS PROGRAM IS IMPORTANT.
>> IT IS IMPORTANT. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT WE'RE ALLOWED TO DO IF WE CAN GET K THREE AGAIN, I'M GOING TO GET K THREE AND GET AS MANY KIDS AS WE CAN.
WE HAVE SOME PLANS FOR HIGH SCHOOL ABOUT INCREASING ENROLLMENT AS WELL AND GETTING MORE HIGH SCHOOLERS AND SEATS TO.
>> THANK YOU. GENE IS NOT HERE.
SHE'S PLAYING SOCCER. LUCKY MOM.
BUT OUR ELEMENTARY PROGRAM, AND THIS IS MY FOURTH YEAR IN SUMMER SCHOOL, FIRST YEAR AS ADMIN, AND THE REST THOSE OTHER THREE YEARS WERE AT THE ELEMENTARY PROGRAM.
OUR PLAYERS AND TEACHERS, MANY OF THEM ARE RETURNING PARENTS AND TEACHERS.
SOME OF OUR STUDENTS HAD COME SINCE THE FIRST YEAR THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING IT, AND THESE PICTURES OF JOY AND ENJOYMENT OF SUMMER SCHOOL ARE REAL.
THIS WAS PRETTY SPECIAL AND UNIQUE.
NOT THAT THE PREVIOUS YEARS WERE NOT SO HAPPY, BUT THIS WAS REALLY AN INCREDIBLE YEAR.
THOSE TWO TEACHERS PICTURED ARE ACTUALLY OUR INSTRUCTIONAL PAIRS.
THAT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE THAT SHOWS THE VALUE OF OUR INSTRUCTIONAL PAIRS.
THEY ARE TEACHING SMALL GROUPS AND SUPPORTING OUR LEARNERS.
THEN THE PICTURE OF PAINTING GOES DOWN TO OUR STUDENTS ARE THERE AND THEY'RE ENJOYING BEING TO SCHOOL BECAUSE WE'RE DOING FUN THINGS WITH THEM, NOT JUST READING, NOT THAT READING ISN'T FUN.
IF YOU LOOK IN THE TOP PICTURE, THEY'RE READING AND DOING WORD PUZZLES TOGETHER.
BUT WE'RE REALLY LOOKING AT THE WHOLE STUDENT SOCIAL, EMOTIONALLY AND ACADEMICALLY.
THIS WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS.
I TALKED TO TWO FAMILIES THAT BOTH HAVE STUDENTS AT MY SCHOOL AT WOODBURN, WHO SHARED THAT ONE WAS A KINDERGARTNER AND WHEN IT WAS A FIRST GRADER, AND THEY WERE PRETTY BUMMED OUT ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL BECAUSE [INAUDIBLE].
BUT AFTER THE FIRST WEEK, THEY WERE SO EXCITED TO COME BACK.
THEY REPORTED BEING MORE CONFIDENT AS A READER THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO READ WITH THEIR CLASSMATES, WHICH IS SOMETHING THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO DO IN THE CLASSROOM, THAT THEY WANTED TO GO TO THE LIBRARY AND READ MORE, AND THE ONE KINDERGARTEN COULD NOT WAIT FOR SCHOOL TO START IN THE FALL.
WHEN KIDS WANT TO READ, THEY WILL BECOME READERS.
IF WE'RE EVEN ABLE TO DO THAT IN OUR 16 DAYS, THAT'S A BIG WIN.
SOME LOGISTICS ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL.
AGAIN, WE INVITED STUDENTS WHO SCORED IN THE WELL BELOW RANGE ON OUR M-CLASS DATA FROM THE MIDDLE OF YEAR.
AROUND 274 STUDENTS QUALIFIED FOR THAT INVITATION.
WE HAD 159 STUDENTS CONFIRMED, WERE COMING, AND ONLY 124 MADE IT.
I'LL BE HONEST, THAT 124 NUMBER, I FELT THE BEST ABOUT.
WE WERE NOT ABLE TO HIRE MORE TEACHERS, AND IF ALL 274 OF THOSE STUDENTS CAME, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE WOULD DO.
EVEN 159, WE ARE WORKING WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE AT THE GREATEST NEED OF TEACHING AND INSTRUCTION.
THAT MANY STUDENTS WITH JUST SIX TEACHERS, EIGHT TEACHERS WOULD HAVE BEEN A PUSH.
WE JUST NEED MORE TEACHERS AS WELL.
WE WERE SUPPORTING KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THIRD GRADE, TWO TEACHERS AND TWO PAIRS.
WE HAD OUR COORDINATOR GENO LEE WAS THERE, AND THEN OUR NURSE WAS THERE AS WELL.
WE HAD A STUDENT WITH DIABETES AND NEEDED CHECKED THROUGHOUT THE DAY, AND SHE WAS ON THAT ALL THE TIME.
BUT WITHOUT ME BEING THERE OR AN ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT THERE, OUR NURSE WAS ALSO LETTING FAMILIES IN, ANSWERING PHONE CALLS AND PUTTING BAND AIDS ON BOO-BOOS AND ALL THAT AS WELL.
WE WERE VERY GRATEFUL FOR HER TO BE THERE.
THIS WAS OUR THIRD YEAR OF USING A SCIENCE OF READING CURRICULUM.
[00:35:04]
I TALKED TO OUR INSTRUCTIONAL COACH TODAY AND WE DON'T REALLY HAVE A SCIENCE OF READING CURRICULUM, BUT FOLLOWING THE RESEARCH OF THE SCIENCE OF READING.IT WAS OUR SECOND YEAR WITH OUR DISTRICT STRUCTURED LITERACY PROGRAM.
WE WERE JUST USING A LOT OF THE MATERIALS THAT WE'VE BEEN LEARNING ABOUT THROUGH LETTERS IN OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND THEN A LOT OF THE MATERIALS THAT WE HAVE IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND THAT OUR TITLE AND LAB INSTRUCTORS ARE USING AS WELL.
ORTON-GILLINGHAM, THE RED WORD ROUTINE, THREE PART DRILL, ALL OF THOSE THINGS THAT ARE CODABLES THAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE.
WE BROUGHT THOSE ALONG AND THAT'S HOW WE SUPPORTED OUR STUDENTS.
WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS A FEW TIMES THAT FOUR WEEKS IS A TIGHT SCHEDULE.
IT'S 16 DAYS, THEY'RE HALF DAYS.
WE GOT ABOUT 10, BUT IT'S TIGHT TO MAKE A MAJOR IMPACT AND SHOW GROWTH. IT'S IMPRESSIVE.
ALL OF OUR STUDENTS ARE STILL GOING TO GO BACK LIKELY AND SCORE IN THE WELL BELOW RANGE IN THE FALL.
HOWEVER, THEY CAME BACK TO SCHOOL THIS WEEK AND LAST WEEK READIER THAN THEY WOULD HAVE WITHOUT IT.
THEN AGAIN, THE EMPHASIS ON SCL, THESE KIDS LOVED BEING IN SCHOOL, AT SUMMER SCHOOL OF ALL THINGS.
I'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS. OUR STAFF WAS AMAZING.
OUR PARENTS JUST ARE THERE FOR THE RIGHT REASONS AND THEY LOVE TO BE THERE.
OUR TEACHERS ARE BOUGHT IN, THEY LOVE IT.
WE JUST REALLY MADE THIS A PLACE TO LOVE BEING AT SCHOOL AND READ.
THEN IF WE CAN FEED KIDS DURING THE SUMMER, TWICE A DAY, THAT'S A HUGE WIN.
WE HAD QUITE A FEW KIDS GETTING LUNCH, IT WAS AWESOME.
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE, I THINK WITH THE TRANSITION OF ME JOINING IN LATE MARCH, MADE SOME OF THIS A LITTLE TRICKIER.
BUT WE HAVE THE DATA OF WHO'S GOING TO BE INVITED TO OUR SUMMER READING PROGRAM IN JANUARY.
WE DIDN'T MAKE A MOVE ON THIS UNTIL MARCH.
THAT MADE IT A LITTLE TRICKIER TO GET THE BALL ROLLING ON SENDING INVITATIONS, WHICH MADE IT HARD TO COMMUNICATE WITH FAMILIES AND THEN HAVE A CLEAR COMMUNICATION TO TEACHERS.
ALL OF THAT I'M HOPING WILL BE SMOOTHER AND EASIER AND SOONER SINCE I'LL BE HERE FROM THE GET GO.
MY MY HOPE IS TO A HOUSE AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL.
THEN IF NOTHING ELSE, WE'RE ALL FAMILIAR WITH THE THIRD GRADE READING PLANS IF STUDENTS AREN'T READING AT GRADE LEVEL.
I WOULD LIKE TO AT LEAST PROVIDE A SUMMER READING PROGRAM TO ALL THE STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR A SUMMER READING PROGRAM, BECAUSE WE SAY WE'RE GOING TO SUPPORT THEM FURTHER.
THE QUESTION IS HOW, AND SO THIS IS A WAY THAT WE COULD.
THEN WITH THE BUDGET, AGAIN, I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS AROUND A FEE BASED ENTRY FOR ELEMENTARY.
I THINK JUST BEING AN ELEMENTARY TEACHER, THAT JUST GIVES ME THE MAJOR EEK, BUT IT'S SOMETHING WE COULD DO IF OUR BUDGET REQUIRES IT.
>> A DISCOVERY BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE A PLAYGROUND.
A PLAYGROUND FOR KIDS THROUGH THREE, THEY'RE DOING ACTIVITIES, BUT THEY HAVE TO DO IT ALL INDOORS OR.
IT'S A GREAT SITE, NO DOUBT, BUT I'M JUST WONDERING, HOW'S THAT, WE DON'T HAVE SMALL CHAIRS THERE FOR LITTLE ONES, WE HAVE IT AT THE ELEMENTARY.
JUST CURIOUS HOW THAT'S GOING TO FIT.
>> IT'S A GREAT QUESTION. I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING WE CAN NAVIGATE.
I HAD MY CLASSROOM MOVED ACROSS DISTRICT A COUPLE OF TIMES.
WE CAN HAVE PEOPLE HELP US MOVE THINGS.
THEN THERE'S AN AWESOME GYM THERE.
>> GYM'S GREAT. THAT THING I'M NOT WORRIED ABOUT WHERE THEY'LL PLAY.
YOU GIVE SOME HULA HOOPS AND SOME BASKETBALLS AND KIDS.
>> WILL BE FINE, THERE'S PLENTY OF INDOOR SPACE.
>> BUT YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THE SEATING.
>> IS THERE, AGAIN, THE RIGHT NUMBER OF STUDENTS, BUT IT COULD GO UP.
IF IT WENT UP, WHAT IS THE SCHEDULING LIKE EARLIER TO GET MORE STUDENTS BECAUSE PARENTS ALREADY BOOKS PLANS OR WHAT'S THE MAJOR INHIBITOR TO GETTING THOSE STUDENTS IN?
>> WE HAD SIX WEEKS THE FIRST YEAR AND IT WAS LIKE, THIS IS TOO LONG.
TEACHERS COULDN'T HANDLE IT, KIDS COULDN'T HANDLE IT, PARENTS JUST WEREN'T ABLE TO COMMIT TO ALL THAT TIME.
I THINK THERE'S ALSO A COMMITMENT TO THE DESIRE OF THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM.
SOME KIDS MAKE IT THE FIRST WEEK AND ARE LIKE, I'M OUT, I'M NOT DOING THIS, AND THEN AS ARE LIKE I'M NOT GOING TO FIGHT YOU OVER IT TOO.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ANSWER IS.
BE SOME MORE OUTREACH ABOUT WHAT WE DO.
WE JUST SEND ONE MESSAGE THROUGH PARENT SQUARE AND SO WE CAN DO SOMETHING.
>> JUST A PIGGYBACK ON WHAT MATTHEW WAS SAYING.
YOU SAID YOU HAD 274 STUDENTS THAT WERE RECOMMENDED, 159 ENROLLED, 124 ATTENDED.
THE ONES THAT DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER, I SHOULDN'T SAY BOTHER, DIDN'T EVEN ENROLL, WAS IT THAT THEY JUST DIDN'T RESPOND OR DID THEY GET BACK TO YOU AND SAY THAT THERE WAS A BARRIER OR?
>> THAT THEY JUST DIDN'T RESPOND.
>> THERE WAS A CAVEAT IN THERE, IF YOU COULDN'T ATTEND MOST OF THE DAYS THAT WE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO ENROLL YOU DEPENDING ON IF WE HAD A LOT OF STUDENTS SHOW, AND WE WERE ABLE TO LET ALL OF THEM IN.
I THINK ONE OF THE NOTES ON THERE WAS, IF YOU WON'T BE HERE FOR MOST OF THE TIME,
[00:40:01]
PLEASE DON'T ENROLL, SO WE WOULD JUST TAKE THAT OFF.>> BUT IT WAS JUST A BLANKET PARENT SCORE MESSAGE OUT TO FOLKS.
>> WE SENT IT OUT FIVE TIMES IF NOT MORE, BUT YEAH. MANY TIMES.
>> THAT 124 THAT YOU SAY ATTENDED, THOSE ATTENDED PRETTY MUCH EVERY DAY?
>> WHEN DOES SUMMER SCHOOL OCCUR? IS IT LIKE RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL GETS OUT? I'M WONDERING IF WHERE WE PLACED IT IN THE SUMMER WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR FAMILIES?
>> THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION. IT STARTS RIGHT AFTER THE FOURTH AND IT'S FOUR WEEKS.
I THINK IT WAS JULY 8TH TO AUGUST 1ST FOR ELEMENTARY.
ALSO, FOR THE FUTURE, IT SEEMS LIKE WE KNOW WHO THOSE REALLY LOW KIDS ARE TO START WITH AND CAN BE TALKING TO THEIR FAMILIES AND SAYING, HEY, GIVEN WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW, IT MIGHT CHANGE BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
BUT THIS IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU'RE MAKING PLANS FOR NEXT SUMMER THAT KEEP THEM IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND.
>> THAT'S PART OF THAT TEACHER COMMUNICATION.
IF WE CAN LET THEM KNOW THAT THEIR STUDENTS WILL BE INVITED, THEY CAN BE THE ONES TO ALSO PIGGYBACK TO OUR PARENTS SQUARE MESSAGE BECAUSE DOREEN'S GREAT, BUT IF I DON'T KNOW WHO DOREEN IS, I'M OPENING HER PARENTS SQUARE MESSAGE.
>> THAT WAS WHAT I WAS GETTING TO IS IF THERE'S MAYBE ANOTHER PERSONAL TOUCH WOULD HELP TO GET SOME PEOPLE IN.
>> I DID PUT AN EMPHASIS AS WELL AS BEING IN THE HOT SEAT AS A TEACHER, TOO OF TRYING TO KEEP AS MUCH OFF OF TEACHER PLATES BECAUSE WE HAVE ENOUGH ON THERE ALREADY.
BEING AWARE OF THAT AND TRYING TO FIND A BALANCE THERE AS WELL.
>> IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS, THEY'RE JUST LIKE, HEY, WE HAVE THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM.
DO THE PARENTS SEE WHERE THEIR KIDS ARE READING LEVEL WISE?
>> DURING REPORT CARD SEASON, I SHOULDN'T SAY WE DON'T, IT'S COMMON PRACTICE TO SEND UPDATES ON THEIR M-CLASS SCREENING.
>> BUT SOMEHOW TO LET THOSE PARENTS KNOW THAT, HEY, THIS COULD BE SOMETHING THAT YOUR CHILD COULD BENEFIT FOR, SO MAYBE WE WANT TO SCHEDULE THAT VACATION THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF AUGUST INSTEAD OF THE MIDDLE OF JULY OR SOMETHING.
>> THE KIDS THAT WERE IN THE SUMMER SCHOOL, WHEN THEY GO BACK, DO THE TEACHERS KNOW WHO WAS AT SUMMER SCHOOL?
>> THERE'S NO REPORT SENT TO STUDENTS.
I DON'T KNOW. I DON'T THINK SO.
>> I JUST WONDERED IF MY KID ATTENDED SUMMER SCHOOL, WOULD MY TEACHER THAT THE KID HAS IN THE FALL KNOW THAT THIS KID ATTENDED SUMMER SCHOOL AND MAYBE PAY ATTENTION OR NOT PAY ATTENTION, BUT BE AWARE THAT THEY ATTENDED AND TOOK A READING CLASS AND MAYBE TO MONITOR FOR THEIR CHANGES OR JUST KNOW WHO WAS IN SUMMER SCHOOL.
>> THERE'S NOTHING THAT'S SHARED WITH TEACHERS FROM NEXT YEAR, BUT THE PRINCIPALS KNOW WHICH STUDENTS ARE ATTENDING.
>> THAT COULD BE LIKE THAT CONTINUITY OF CARE.
THEN ALSO KNOW MAYBE THIS IS SOMEONE THEY WANT TO TALK TO WITH THE PARENTS AND RECOMMEND THIS FOR THE NEXT YEAR.
>> I WANT TO GO BACK TO THE PBL CAMPUS BECAUSE ONE OF THE THINGS I DO WONDER.
PEOPLE DON'T KNOW, AND IF THESE ARE PARENTS THAT JUST HAVE YOUNGER KIDS, SHOULD THE ICE BE BROKEN WHEN THEY'RE INVITED TO HAVE SOMETHING IN FEBRUARY OR MARCH TO SAY IN THE EVENING, COME VISIT THE CAMPUS.
IS THAT GOING TO BE A DETRACTOR FOR ANY OF THESE PARENTS OR IS IT AN OPPORTUNITY TO SAY, YOU'VE BEEN INVITED TO THIS SUMMER READING PROGRAM, COME TO THE DHS CAMPUS.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN EVENING WHERE THE KIDS CAN RUN AROUND, GET BALLOONS BALLS.
I JUST HAVE TO RUN CRAZY THROUGH THAT CONCRETE HALLWAY OF JUST THROWING THINGS AROUND.
BECAUSE I DO WONDER IF THAT WOULD BE AN INHIBITOR TO SOME PARENTS LIKE SHOWCASE THE SCHOOLS, HAVE THEM COME OUT AND PARENTS, WE CAN HAVE COFFEE AND ADULTS COULD GET SOME PEOPLE TO SHOW THEM AROUND AND SAY, THIS IS WHERE YOUR KIDS WOULD BE.
IT'S JUST ONE THING BECAUSE I KNOW FOR A LOT OF PARENTS I HAVE HEARD FROM THEM, THEY'VE NEVER BEEN OVER THERE.
IF THEY NEVER GO OVER THERE, IT MIGHT DETRACT THEM FROM SAYING, I'M GOING TO SIGN UP.
THEY SEE THE PHYSICAL SPACE AND LIKE, THIS IS REALLY OPEN AND INVITING.
IT DOESN'T FEEL CLOSED, SO IT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.
>> I THINK THAT'S A GREAT IDEA AND IT ADDS TO THE LEGACY OF DOING THAT.
WE HOST OUR ELEMENTARY ROBOTICS TOURNAMENT AT DISCOVERY AND WE TRY AND DO A LOT OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH SO PEOPLE ARE MORE AWARE OF THE CAMPUS, BUT I THINK THAT'S A FABULOUS IDEA.
>> IT'S NOT THAT MANY FAMILIES.
EVEN THE FATHERS [OVERLAPPING] OPEN LIKE, WE'RE JUST GOING TO WALK FAMILIES THROUGH AND THEY CAN SEE THE PROJECT BASED ON THE CAMPUS SO THEY KNOW PART OF THE ASSET THAT'S IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
>> CAN YOU CLICK FOR ME? THANK YOU.
I'M NOT IN THE MOOD TO MULTITASK.
I GOT TO BE THE HIGH SCHOOL COORDINATOR.
THIS IS MY SECOND YEAR BEING THE HIGH SCHOOL COORDINATOR AND I WAS A SUMMER SCHOOL TEACHER MY FIRST YEAR.
THIS IS MY THIRD YEAR BEING INVOLVED IN THE PROGRAM.
[00:45:02]
ONE THING I WOULD LOVE TO SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT EVERY YEAR OUR PROGRAM GETS BETTER, THIS YEAR WAS AMAZING.ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS DIFFERENT WAS WE HAD A MULTILINGUAL CLASSROOM THAT WAS SET UP TO MEET THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENT OF WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY FOR STUDENTS WHO DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH AS THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE.
WE HAD MICKEY PATNIK AS OUR INSTRUCTIONAL PARA.
THEN WE ALSO HAD OXANA WAGNER. EVAN FOUND HER.
I WAS SO EXCITED. HE CALLED ME WHEN I WAS ON THE EAST COAST TRIP AND HE SAID, I FOUND SOMEONE WHO'S AN ENGLISH TEACHER AND IS FLUENT IN TWO OTHER LANGUAGES.
LANGUAGES THAT WE NEED IN OUR DISTRICT.
SHE WAS FLUENT IN RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN AND GERMAN, I BELIEVE. SHE'S PRETTY AMAZING.
THIS CLASSROOM WAS DIFFERENT IN THAT WE HAD HOW MANY PEOPLE DID WE HAVE IN THAT ROOM, EVAN, DO YOU REMEMBER? TWENTY ONE STUDENTS, MANY DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.
SOME OF THOSE STUDENTS STORIES ARE ABSOLUTELY MIND BLOWING, LIKE THEY HAD NEVER BEEN TO PUBLIC SCHOOL, AND YET WE STILL NEED THEM TO, WHICH THIS SEEMS SO MINOR, YOU NEED TO GRADUATE WITH WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY.
THAT'S A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT.
I THINK ABOUT A MULTILINGUAL LEARNER AND ALL OF THE NEEDS THAT THEY HAVE.
THAT TO ME SEEMS LIKE A MINOR NEED, BUT IT IS SOMETHING THAT OPENED A PATHWAY FOR THEM.
I DEVELOPED A COURSE USING OUR EDGENUITY.
I MODIFIED THE COURSE FOR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS.
EDGENUITY COMES WITH A LOT OF NOTE TAKING STRATEGIES AND THINGS THAT I COULD PRINT OFF.
MICKEY AND I CREATED THOSE PACKETS AND THEY CAME IN PERSON.
THEY WERE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH EACH OTHER.
THEY WERE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH OXANA, IF SHE HAD THEIR LANGUAGE THAT THEY COULD TRANSLATE BACK AND FORTH.
OXANA WAS A HUGE HELP IN THAT.
ONE OF THE THINGS WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE PARENT SCORE MESSAGES THAT WAS A BARRIER IS THAT THOSE FAMILIES, THEY WERE PROBABLY GETTING THE PARENT SCORE MESSAGES AND WE'RE NOT EITHER READING THEM.
I'M NOT SURE WHAT IT WAS, BUT MICKEY, SHE IS FEARLESS.
SHE WILL GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE COMING TO SUMMER SCHOOL BECAUSE SHE WANTS YOU TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL.
OXANA WAS ABLE TO CALL A LOT OF THOSE FAMILIES AND REACH OUT TO THEM AND SAY, HEY, DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD IS SUPPOSED TO BE HERE TAKING WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY? NO, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BUS AT YOUR HOUSE TOMORROW.
OUR TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT WAS SO FLEXIBLE THIS SUMMER.
THEY WERE ABLE TO ADAPT THEIR ROUTES AT THE DROP OF A HAT AND GET THOSE STUDENTS TO DISCOVERY.
THE STUDENTS, I DON'T KNOW THAT THEY WERE VERY HAPPY, BUT WE WERE REALLY HAPPY THAT THEY SHOWED UP.
WE DID HAVE ONE PERSON WHO COMPLETELY DROPPED OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH WAS REALLY SADDENING.
I GUESS THIS IS VERY COMMON WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE REFUGEES AND THEY LOOK AT THIS ENORMOUS TASK IN FRONT OF THEM TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN AMERICA AND SOMETIMES THEY DROP OUT.
BUT WHAT I SAW WAS EVERY STUDENT THAT CAME, GOT THAT GRADUATION REQUIREMENT CHECKED OFF THE LIST.
WE HAD 100% COMPLETION OF THAT COURSE.
THE BEST PART ABOUT THAT TOO IS, BECAUSE THEY WERE THERE FOR FOUR HOURS, WE WERE ABLE TO PUT THEM INTO A MATH OR ENGLISH CLASS THAT THEY MIGHT NEED FOR THEIR SECOND POINT OF THE DAY FOR THAT SECOND TWO HOURS OF THE DAY, AND WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE THEM SUPPORT IN THAT.
THAT'S ONE HUGE THING THAT IS SO DIFFERENT AND SO AMAZING THAT WE ACCOMPLISHED.
>> OVERALL, WE HAD 500 PLUS STUDENTS ENROLLED, WHICH IS AT LEAST 100 MORE THAN LAST SUMMER, 290 CREDIT RECOVERY SEMESTER CLASSES THAT ARE MATH, SCIENCE, ENGLISH AND SPANISH.
THEN WE HAD 473 CREDIT ADVANCEMENT SEMESTER CLASSES, 330 OF THOSE ARE PE AND HEALTH.
WHAT WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE ABOUT THOSE PE AND HEALTH CLASSES IS THAT STUDENTS ARE TAKING THAT CLASS DURING THE SUMMER FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS.
SOME STUDENTS TAKE THAT CLASS BECAUSE THEY'RE ON AN IEP AND THIS IS SOMETHING I LEARNED THAT WAS NEW THIS YEAR, THAT IF THEY DIDN'T TAKE PE AND HEALTH OVER THE SUMMER, THAT AS A FRESHMAN, THEY WOULD NOT GET AN ELECTIVE BECAUSE THEY ARE PUT INTO A DIRECTED STUDIES CLASS.
SO ONE STUDENT WHO'S NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART, I'VE KNOWN THIS CHILD SINCE HE WAS A KINDERGARTNER, HE HAD TO DO PE AND HEALTH OVER THE SUMMER IN ORDER TO HAVE CHOIR BECAUSE HE IS TO MEET HIS NEEDS FOR HIS IEP GOALS AND HE PASSED.
FOR THE STUDENTS WHO ARE SERVED BY IEPS AND 504S, ANOTHER HUGE WIN THIS YEAR WAS BECCA FERRISTER.
[00:50:03]
BECCA FERRISTER HAD THE DUAL AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE WHERE SHE UNDERSTANDS HOW TO READ AN IEP AND SHE KNEW EDGENUITY, AND SHE SAID, LET ME GO INTO EDGENUITY AND MODIFY EVERY KID'S COURSE THAT NEEDS THOSE MODIFICATIONS AND DID IT FABULOUSLY.SO SHE WAS ANOTHER HUGE ASSET TO OUR SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM.
AND I FEEL LIKE OUR IEP AND 504 STUDENTS SAW A LOT MORE SUCCESS, NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF BECCA, BUT BECAUSE OF OUR IN PERSON STAFF.
SO WE HAVE 10 TEACHERS IN TOTAL.
FOR ADVISORY ONLY, THOSE TEACHERS MIGHT NOT BE TEACHING ANY OF THE CONTENT AREAS, BUT THEY'RE REACHING OUT TO FAMILIES AND ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE WHAT BARRIERS ARE YOU EXPERIENCING RIGHT NOW THAT ARE MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR YOUR CHILD TO LOG ON? ARE THEY HAVING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES? DO WE NEED TO MAKE YOUR KID COME HERE.
HOW ABOUT WE DO THAT? WE'RE GOING TO PIVOT AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BUS SHOW UP AT YOUR HOUSE TOMORROW.
EVAN WAS REALLY GOOD ABOUT MAKING THOSE PHONE CALLS.
HIS DAILY ONSITE SUPPORT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE FOR THOSE FAMILIES WHO HAD BARRIERS.
THEN WE HAD SEVEN CONTENT TEACHERS, MATH, PE HEALTH, SCIENCE, ELA, SPANISH, AND SOCIAL STUDIES.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S DIFFERENT THIS YEAR THAT I ASKED FOR IS THAT THERE WAS A MATH TEACHER ON SITE EVERY DAY BECAUSE MY ROLE TENDS TO BE PROBLEM SOLVING AND JUST DOING WHATEVER COMES UP THAT DAY.
IT COULD BE THAT A KID IS HAVING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH LOGGING INTO EDGENUITY.
IT COULD BE THAT A PARENT IS SAYING, I WANT MY KID TO CONTINUE AT HOME.
SO THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT COME UP THAT WE HAVE TO MONITOR AND ADJUST FOR.
LAST YEAR, I WAS KNOWN AS WELL, THE JULIE'S THERE.
YES, I AM, BUT I'M ALSO TRYING TO DO THIS OTHER JOB TOO.
AND I LOVE HELPING KIDS WITH MATH.
THE FEW TIMES I GOT TO DO THAT THIS SUMMER WAS THE HIGHLIGHT.
I WAS LIKE, THANK GOODNESS, I GO TO STEP AWAY FROM MY COMPUTER AND I GET TO GO TO THE WHITEBOARD AND HELP SOME KIDS WITH MATH.
BUT HAVING A MATH TEACHER THERE EVERY DAY WAS VERY HELPFUL.
AND THE WAY THAT DISCOVERY IS LAID OUT, WE HAD THIS BIG OPEN SPACE IN THESE ROLLING WHITEBOARDS.
I WANT TO STEAL THE ROLLING WHITEBOARDS. I LOVE THEM.
THEY HAD PLENTY OF PERSONAL SPACE AND THE MATH TEACHERS WERE ABLE TO MEET THEIR NEEDS.
WE ALSO HAD THE TWO CLASSROOMS BEHIND US, HAD THE MULTILINGUAL CLASS AND THEN JUST ANOTHER CLASS FOR STUDENTS THAT PREFERRED TO BE IN A MORE CLOSED SPACE.
BUT EVAN AND I WERE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE AND WE COULD SEE EVERYTHING THAT WAS GOING ON ALL THE TIME.
THAT SPACE IS REALLY SET UP VERY WELL FOR THAT.
AND THEN WE ALSO HAD BESIDES MYSELF, EVAN, ML EDUCATOR, AND A FULL TIME PARA.
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT, ZOEY.
ZOEY, MY LORD, THE WORLD WOULD END WITHOUT HER.
PART OF THE REASON THAT WE COLLECTED THE TUITION WE DID IS BECAUSE SHE WAS SO ORGANIZED ABOUT GOING THROUGH CONTACTING FAMILIES, CHECKING FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH STATUS, MAKING SURE THAT KIDS WEREN'T CHARGED WHO SHOULDN'T BE CHARGED.
THOSE FAMILIES THAT ASKED FOR SCHOLARSHIP, I LOVE THIS PHILOSOPHY THAT WE'RE GOING TO CONSIDER YOUR REQUEST FOR A SCHOLARSHIP, EVEN IF YOU AREN'T ON FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH.
WE WERE ABLE TO EITHER GIVE PARTIAL OR FULL SCHOLARSHIPS TO PEOPLE THAT NEEDED IT AND REQUESTED IT, AND YET STILL WE'RE COMING OUT AHEAD IN TERMS OF THE TUITION THAT WE COLLECTED AND WHAT IT COSTS TO RUN THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM.
THIS COURSE COMPLETION RATE IS 7% HIGHER THAN LAST YEAR.
SO THAT'S AN IMPROVEMENT AS WELL, 87% COURSE COMPLETION RATE.
EVAN HAD THE BRILLIANT IDEA OF ON THE DAY BEFORE OR SOMETHING.
WE'RE GOING TO SURVEY STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.
HE SENT THE SURVEY OUT TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES JUST ASKING, DID YOU FEEL SUPPORTED? DID YOU FEEL THAT THIS MET YOUR NEEDS? I THINK WE HAD SOME REALLY FUNNY RESPONSES AS WELL.
WE WANT MORE SNACKS, THINGS LIKE THAT.
THE STAFFING, MANY OF OUR STAFF RETURNED AND MANY WERE FAMILIAR WITH EDGE, WHICH WAS REALLY NICE.
OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORTS IMPROVED.
THERE WAS AN INCREASED STUDENT ATTENDANCE IN PERSON BY A LONG SHOT AND ALL THE MULTILINGUAL SUPPORTS.
>> I'M GOING TO ADD ABOUT THE FEEDBACK.
THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES HAD THE SAME QUESTIONS.
BUT OVERWHELMINGLY, OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES AGREED THAT THE COMMUNICATION WAS MORE THAN ADEQUATE AND HELPFUL AND THAT OUR TEACHERS WERE ABOVE AND BEYOND SUPPORTIVE.
FAMILIES AGREED THAT THE AMOUNT OF WORK WAS ADEQUATE AND REASONABLE.
STUDENTS WERE LIKE, DUDE, THIS IS TOO MUCH WORK, BUT THAT SHOULD BE REAL. THIS WAS GREAT.
[00:55:03]
THERE WAS SOME GOOD FEEDBACK THAT WE GOT FROM THIS AS WELL ABOUT STARTING SUMMER SCHOOL EARLIER FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHICH WE ARE TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION.WE HAD A LOT OF CELEBRATIONS FROM THIS FEEDBACK THAT OUR STUDENTS FELT SUPPORTED, WHICH WAS A BIG WIN AND A BIG HOPE FOR US, AND THEN AGAIN, SOME ACTION ITEMS AS WELL.
BUT I THINK I GOT A NEW STUDENT SURVEY YESTERDAY.
THEY'RE STILL FILLING THEM OUT. IT'S WEIRD.
>> THESE ARE ME. THESE ARE SOME 2025 AND BEYOND PROGRAM GOALS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY.
AI AND PLAGIARISM, THOSE ARE NEW THINGS FOR ME TO ENCOUNTER AND WORK WITH, AND I THINK THEY CONTINUE TO BE NEW FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, INCLUDING IN THE SECONDARY WORLD.
OUR SYSTEM DOESN'T HAVE A STRONG AI AND PLAGIARISM DETECTION SYSTEM.
IT CAN DETECT THE DIRECTIONS IN THE ASSIGNMENT AS PLAGIARISM.
IT WAS A LOT OF, LET'S READ THIS ESSAY IF IT'S WRITTEN BETTER THAN WHAT I CAN WRITE, THIS IS PROBABLY A PROBLEM.
SO I MADE A LOT OF THOSE PHONE CALLS AND SOME WENT, NO, THAT'S NOT MY KIDS WRITING, PLEASE FAIL THEM AND HAVE THEM REDO IT.
AND SOME WERE, NO, I SAT BESIDE THEM AND THEY WROTE THAT.
AND WE'RE STUCK, WHAT DO WE DO? SO FINDING SOME MORE ROBUST SYSTEMS TO SUPPORT AI AND PLAGIARISM.
AND THEN, THE ML LEARNING SUPPORT THAT WE OFFERED CANNOT BE UNDERSTATED.
IT HAS TO BE SOMETHING THAT WE CONTINUE.
THE 100% COMPLETION FOR THOSE GRADUATION CREDITS FOR THOSE LEARNERS IS IMPORTANT, AND I THINK WE CANNOT DO IT AGAIN.
IT'S JUST THAT SIMPLE. AND WE NEED MIKKY TO DO IT AS WELL BECAUSE SHE'S AMAZING.
SHE IS FEARLESS AND SHE HAS NO NONSENSE WITH THOSE STUDENTS.
AND THEY WANT TO COME. THEY WERE AWESOME.
THEN DEREK HAS TALKED TO ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CTE COURSES AND MAYBE PARTNERING WITH THE ESD SKILL CENTER AND HOUSING, I BELIEVE IT'S HOUSED IN EVERGREEN VANCOUVER.
>> WE HAVE A SATELLITE PROGRAM AT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL THE LAST TWO YEARS THROUGH CASCADIA.
SO CASCADIA TECHNICAL ACADEMY, IT'S A FUNDED SUMMER SCHOOL BY THE STATE, AND WE'VE HOSTED TWO CLASSES AT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL.
THE ISSUE THAT WE'VE HAD THE LAST TWO YEARS IS THEIR SUMMER SCHOOL SCHEDULE IS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN OURS.
TRYING TO LINE THOSE UP AND MARRY THEM TOGETHER MIGHT BE A GREAT PARTNERSHIP IN THE FUTURE.
ADDITIONALLY, WE DID OFFER A SUMMER SCHOOL CLASS FOR STUDENTS IN CONSTRUCTION, AND I GOT OFF THE GROUND A LITTLE LATE.
WE HAVE REGIONAL COMMITTEE THAT HAS DESIGNED THAT.
THE COMMUNICATION CAME OUT ABOUT SIX WEEKS BEFORE THE END OF SCHOOL AND WE ONLY HAD A COUPLE OF STUDENTS SO INTEREST, BUT WE'LL DO THAT EARLIER THIS YEAR.
AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF OUR INDUSTRIAL COMMUNITY, PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY WILL OFFER THAT HOPEFULLY AT NO COST NEXT YEAR.
>> AND THEN ONE THING THAT I LEARNED AT THE END OF THIS SUMMER WAS THAT OUR HIGH SCHOOL REPORTING PRACTICES FOR GRADES ARE NOT ALIGNED.
SO WHAT COULD BE CONSIDERED A PASS AT ONE SCHOOL WOULD BE CONSIDERED A C AT ANOTHER.
WHAT CONSIDERED TO BE A FULL COMPLETION WAS NOT CONSIDERED TO BE A FULL COMPLETION AT ANOTHER SCHOOL.
AND SO THAT MADE IT REALLY TRICKY FOR OUR TEACHERS AND FOR ME TO SAY WHAT GOES ON IN TRIAL TRANSCRIPT BASED ON WHAT SCHOOL THEY GO TO.
WE ARE MEETING AS A SECONDARY LEVEL TEAM TO ALIGN OUR PRACTICES SO THAT THERE'S NO CONFUSION BETWEEN OUR SCHOOLS.
AGAIN, GOING BACK TO FUNDING, WE'RE GOING TO MAINTAIN OUR COST OF TUITION FOR ORIGINAL AND CREDIT RECOVERY COURSES.
AND I JUST I DON'T LOVE TO THINK ABOUT CHARGING ELEMENTARY KIDS, BUT IT'S THERE.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT JULIE TALKED ABOUT WAS THE FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH STATUS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS.
I THINK IN THE PAST, IT WAS IF YOU ASK FOR A SCHOLARSHIP, YOU GET IT.
HAVING ME AT CAMPUS ALL DAY ALLOWED ZOEY TO HAVE TIME TO CALL THOSE FAMILIES, WHERE IN THE PAST, SHE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO CALL THOSE FAMILIES.
SO WE WERE ABLE TO GET A LOT MORE MONEY BACK BECAUSE OF THAT.
IT DOES TAKE TIME TO REVIEW THAT.
SO WE JUST NEED TO HAVE SOME MONEY TO BE ABLE TO OFFER THAT TO SOMEBODY.
THE STUDENTS SAID THEY WANTED MORE TIME.
WE WANT TO OPEN UP THOSE COURSES FAR SOONER IN THE SUMMER, MAYBE RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL GETS OUT.
THE TRICKY PART IS THERE WILL BE NO TEACHER SUPPORT.
AND SO BECAUSE TEACHERS WON'T BE HIRED UNTIL AFTER 4TH JULY.
I'M NOT ASKING TEACHERS TO WORK BEFORE THEY GET PAID.
IT'S HOW DO WE NAVIGATE THAT SYSTEM AND WHAT SUPPORTS DOES STUDENT HAVE WHEN THEY HAVE THE COURSE.
BUT WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE THINKING ABOUT THAT AND WE COULD GET MORE STUDENTS IN BECAUSE OF IT TOO.
AND THEN THEY MIGHT NOT FEEL THE CRUNCH OF THREE CLASSES.
SOME KIDS WERE TAKING THREE CLASSES IN SIX WEEKS, AND THAT IS INSANE, SO.
>> CAN I ADD TO THAT A LITTLE BIT?
[01:00:01]
I WANTED TO ADD ON TO SOMETHING THAT WAS ON THE PRIOR SLIDE ABOUT REPORTING PRACTICES.ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS DISHEARTENING FOR ME WHEN I WOULD PULL TRANSCRIPTS OF MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS WAS THE NUMBER OF FS THAT I SAW ON THEIR REPORT CARDS, AND HOW DO WE MAKE GRADUATION A REALITY FOR THOSE STUDENTS? WHAT PATHWAY CAN WE CREATE FOR THOSE STUDENTS? AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY, I DON'T HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT IT WOULD TAKE FOR A MULTILINGUAL LEARNER TO GET CREDIT RECOVERY FOR NINTH GRADE ENGLISH.
NOT CERTAIN WHY WE'RE FAILING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
THAT'S A WHOLE ANOTHER CONVERSATION, BUT I'M WONDERING WHAT DO THEY NEED TO GET THAT CREDIT RECOVERED.
BECAUSE I'M TELLING YOU OUR EDGENUITY COURSE IS NOT FOR NINTH GRADE ENGLISH IS NOT BUILT FOR A MULTILINGUAL LEARNER AT ALL.
IT'S NOT EVEN BUILT FOR A STUDENT WHO STRUGGLES WITH ENGLISH.
HOW DO WE MAKE THOSE GRADUATION PATHWAYS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE LEARNERS IS SOMETHING THAT WE ABSOLUTELY NEED TO DIG INTO IN OUR DISTRICT, OR WE'RE GOING TO SEE STUDENTS NOT GRADUATING BECAUSE OF IT.
>> THANKS, JULIE. SECURING FUNDING FOR SPECIAL SERVICES, HAVING BECCA FERRISTER, AS ONE OF OUR TEACHERS THIS YEAR WAS JUST A LUCKY STRIKE.
AND SHE'S A TEACHER WHO WENT THROUGH ALL OF OUR IEPS AND WENT THROUGH ALL OF OUR EDGENUITY COURSES AND COMBED THEM THROUGH TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE ACCOMMODATING AND MODIFYING THE WAY WE'RE SUPPOSED TO PER IEP REQUIREMENTS.
AND SO I WANT TO GO TO OUR SPECIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND SAY, HEY, CAN YOU HELP FUND THIS BECAUSE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT OUR STUDENTS REQUIRE AND NEED, AND THIS WAS FUNDING FOR SUMMER SCHOOL.
SO JUST CREATIVE THINKING THERE.
IT'S NOT A LOT OF MONEY, BUT IT COULD BE SOME.
ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL?
>> WELL, IT JUST GOT ME THINKING THERE TO BECAUSE EDGENUITY, DOESN'T CCA USE EDGENUITY AS WELL? SO WHEN WE CREATE THESE COURSES AND WE MODIFY THESE COURSES, THESE ARE SOMETHING WE CAN USE IN THE FUTURE THEN AS WELL.
>> ABSOLUTELY. THAT HAS BEEN SAVED IN THE SUMMER SCHOOL DATABASE.
I THINK WE CAN DO THIS FOR ALL COURSES.
I JUST NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS ARE IN CASE THERE'S AN AUDIT.
WHAT WOULD QUALIFY AS A PASS? DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND THAT.
>> I'M JUST THINKING SINCE WE'RE MAKING THEM, WE HAVE THEM, THEY CAN BE USED FOR CCA OR SOMEBODY LIKE THAT.
I'M JUST THINKING SINCE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT FUNDING SOURCES AND THOSE THINGS.
IS THAT SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE FUNDED BY SUMMER SCHOOL OR IS THAT SOMETHING THAT COULD BE A CCA THING?
>> I'M WONDERING THE CREDIT ADVANCEMENT.
THERE'S NOT A LOT OF HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMS THAT OFFER CREDIT ADVANCEMENT BESIDES PE AND HEALTH.
AND SO IF WE HAD A TUITION BASED CREDIT ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM, I'M SURE WE COULD GATHER STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTY THAT WOULD COME TO DO THAT.
I DON'T KNOW IF THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING OR A BAD THING FUNDING WISE, BUT THEN ALSO WE NEED THE RESOURCES FOR THAT TOO.
BUT THAT'S SOMETHING AS A HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR IN EVERGREEN, I KNOW THAT I HAVE A LOT OF KIDS THAT WOULD BE LIKE, WHAT? I COULD DO THAT BECAUSE EVERGREEN DOESN'T OFFER THAT JUST CREDIT ADVANCEMENT IN PE AND HEALTH ONLY.
>> CREDIT RECOVERY, BUT NO CREDIT ADVANCEMENT.
>> I THINK WHAT YOU SEE, I RAN A PRETTY ROBUST SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM IN A DIFFERENT DISTRICT IN OREGON, IS THAT STUDENTS WHO HAVE A PASSION IN HIGH SCHOOL, THEY'LL DO THEIR CREDIT ADVANCEMENT SO THEY CAN PURSUE THEIR PASSION.
I WANT TO BE A FOUR YEAR BAND STUDENT, AND I WANT TO TAKE SYMPHONIC BAND DURING THE DAY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
AND I THINK WE'RE DOING THE STUDENTS A SERVICE BECAUSE THEN THEY CAN PURSUE THEIR PASSIONS MORE DEEPLY WHEN THEY GET INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL SETTING.
>> AND I SEE THAT PARTICULARLY WITH MATH.
KIDS THAT LIKE MAYBE I STARTED HIGH SCHOOL IN ALGEBRA, BUT I WANT TO TAKE GEOMETRY OVER THE SUMMER SO I GET INTO ALGEBRA 2, THIS BITTER SWEET, ESPECIALLY KIDS WHO WANT TO DO RUNNING START, BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN ALGEBRA 2, YOU CAN DO ALL YOUR CLASSES AT CLARK, WHETHER THAT'S A GOOD THING OR A BAD THING, BUT THAT IS A MOTIVATOR FOR A LOT OF KIDS TO WANT TO TAKE, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU LEARN A YEAR OF GEOMETRY OVER FOUR WEEKS.
>> THAT'S YOUR WHOLE LIFE FOR THAT FOUR WEEKS.
>> DO THE CCA DO THAT OVER THE SUMMER, BECAUSE I THOUGHT MY DAUGHTER BETWEEN EIGHT AND FRESHMAN BECAUSE SHE WENT FOR ODYSSY DISCOVERY SHE TOOK SOMETHING OVER THE SUMMER. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN CCA.
>> IT'S THROUGH THE SUMMER SCHOOL.
>> SO SUMMER SCHOOL, BUT SHE NEVER WENT IN, SO IT WAS JUST ALL VIRTUAL.
>> SAME PROGRAM, IT WAS INTENSE, BUT SHE LOVED MATH,
[01:05:02]
SO I KEPT HER QUIET.SHE REALLY ENJOYED MATH. I HAD A COUPLE OF THINGS.
SO SAME QUESTION ABOUT THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND IF THEY WEREN'T AT DHS BEFORE, WHAT THEIR FEEDBACK ON THAT FACILITY FOR, THAT WORK WELL FOR THEM? DO THEY LIKE BEING THERE? I'M JUST CURIOUS ON THE SURVEY AND RESULTS BECAUSE AGAIN, IF THEY DON'T GO TO SCHOOL THERE, IT'S A DIFFERENT.
>> WE DIDN'T PUT A QUESTION ABOUT THE FACILITIES.
KIDS WALKED IN AND THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT.
BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS, AND THEY LOVED DONUT THURSDAYS, TOO.
>> THERE WE GO. THEY USE THE GAGA BALL PIT OUTSIDE.
SO THEY DO THAT AT ALL? THEY DIDN'T DO THAT.
>> NO TO THE GYM UNLESS SOMEONE WAS IN THE GYM.
>> HE KNOWS BEST. ONE QUESTION.
SO YOU BROUGHT UP THE AI POLICY AND SUPPORT, WHICH FOR ME HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PERSONALLY AS APPARENT, LIKE AN ISSUE BECAUSE SOME KIDS GET CALLED OUT.
I CAME TO THE BOARD BEFORE I JOINED AND GAVE A COMMENT THAT, A LOT OF THE TOOLS ARE INAPPROPRIATELY USED TO TELL STUDENTS LIKE 80 100% OF IT WAS FLAGGED BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT MEANT FOR THAT.
I GUESS THE QUESTION FOR YOU IS WHAT CAN THE BOARD DO ON THE POLICY SIDE FOR THIS, BECAUSE IT IMPACTS EVERYBODY.
IT IMPACTS REGULAR STUDENTS, SUMMER SCHOOL.
SUMMER SCHOOL MIGHT BE BECAUSE IT'S MORE INTENSE AND SOMEONE MIGHT FEEL THAT PRESSURE.
BUT COULD YOU BE ABLE TO JUST EXPAND ON THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE WHAT YOU THINK WE SHOULD DO AS A DISTRICT WHEN IT COMES TO AI.
>> SHOULD WE EMBRACE IT WHOLE HOG AND THEN SAY, WE'RE NOT GOING TO WORRY ABOUT DETECTING IT? WE'RE GOING TO BUILD IT INTO THE CURRICULUM, WHICH SOME SCHOOLS IN THE US HAVE DONE WHERE THEY SAY, WE'RE GOING TO JUST WHOLE HOG, SAY IT'S A GREAT THING, BUT YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PROVE YOUR WORK AS YOU TYPE, SHOW YOUR WORK.
I'M JUST CURIOUS TO YOUR THOUGHTS ON IT BECAUSE YOU BROUGHT IT UP HERE.
>> A COUPLE OF THE WAY I HANDLED IT IF YOU CAN TALK TO ME ABOUT WHAT YOU WROTE AND COHERENT, THEN YOU WROTE IT.
IF YOU AREN'T COHERENT, THEN YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T WRITE IT, AND THAT'S THE WAY I COULD TELL? THERE WERE SOME THOUGHTS AROUND, ESPECIALLY IN ENGLISH, HAVING STUDENTS WRITE THEIR ESSAYS IN GOOGLE DOCS AND SHARE THEIR GOOGLE DOC SO THAT WE COULD SEE THE HISTORY OF THEIR WRITING.
LIKE, WAS THIS COPY PASTE AT ALL AT ONCE, OR DID YOU ACTUALLY TYPE THIS IN? IN TERMS OF POLICY, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD BE HELPFUL.
THAT'S A REALLY GREAT QUESTION.
>> I CAN MAYBE CAN ADD TO THAT A LITTLE BIT.
WE HAVE AN INTERNAL DISTRICT COMMITTEE AND AI COMMITTEE AND WE HAVE HAD A MEETING AND WE HAVE MORE MEETINGS PLANNED FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR, AND ALSO OSPI HAS A COMMITTEE WHERE THEY HAVE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WILL COME OUT OF FOUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
I WOULD JUST ADD TO THAT AI HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE IT DEFEATS DETECTION SERVICES.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE'VE TALKED ABOUT IS, DO YOUR MATH FINAL IN PERSON, DO YOUR END OF UNIT FINALS IN PERSON.
WRITE YOUR FINAL PAPER IN GOOGLE DOCS OR IN PERSON.
IT'S VERY CHALLENGING BECAUSE IT IS DESIGNED, AS YOU WELL KNOW TO REPLICATE HUMANS, AND IT LEARNS AND IT CAN LEARN THE WRITINGS OF A 13-YEAR-OLD AND THEN REPLICATE THAT TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A 13-YEAR-OLD WROTE IT.
AI IS GOING TO BE A VERY LARGE CHALLENGE FOR THE EDUCATION COMMUNITY, BUT WE'VE HAD MANY CHALLENGES OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS, STARTING WITH THESE GUYS THAT WE'VE REALLY WORKED TOGETHER TO, I THINK, IMPROVE THE EDUCATION RESPONSE.
WE DO HAVE AN INTERNAL COMMITTEE AND WE'LL BE MEETING THROUGH THIS YEAR AND THEN ASK THE BOARD, I THINK, THROUGHOUT THAT PROCESS ABOUT SOME POLICY CHANGES, ADAPTATIONS AND THEN OSPI WILL ALSO HELP TO INFORM THAT.
>> WELL, I THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT UP BECAUSE I THINK IT'S TWO THINGS.
ONE IS, POLICY IS ONLY GOING TO SET WHAT'S THE DISCIPLINARY POLICY FOR IT? BUT I THINK YOU WERE SHARING HOW YOU APPROACH STUDENTS WITH [INAUDIBLE] THAT WAS FOR MY STUDENTS.
THEY WERE SOME OF THEIR EDUCATORS WOULD COME FORWARD AND SAY, YOU KNOW, AI SAID IT WAS FRAUDULENT, YOU NEED TO REWRITE IT, AND THEY DIDN'T COME FORWARD WITH A TALK TO ME ABOUT HOW YOU DID THIS OR LOOK AT THE GOOGLE DOC IN TIMELINE AND SO FORTH.
I KNOW YOU'VE GOT A SHORT PERIOD, BUT YOU ALSO WANT TO MAKE THEM FEEL REALLY WELCOME.
THANK YOU FOR APPROACHING IT THAT WAY.
>> I'D LIKE TO ADD ON TO THAT, AS WE'RE LEARNING THIS, THERE HAVE BEEN KIDS WHO HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF IT THAT DIDN'T USE AI.
OUR DETECTION SOFTWARE IS NOT GOOD.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE TELL TEACHERS IS, RUN IT THROUGH THREE DIFFERENT THINGS, HAVE A CONVERSATION.
DON'T JUST IMMEDIATELY SEND AN EMAIL THAT SAYS, YOU USED AI.
WE'RE LEARNING TO BE BETTER ABOUT THAT.
BECAUSE THE WORST THING, WORSE THAN CHEATING IN MY MIND IS ACCUSING SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY DIDN'T USE AI.
>> THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT. ONE MORE THING I WAS GOING TO ADD IS, I KNOW THE WHITEBOARDS ALWAYS GET CALLED OUT AT DISCOVERY. THEY LOVE THOSE WHITE BOARDS.
>> I KNOW THE MAKER SPACE THERE.
I THINK THEY LIKE TO. POKE BRIAN CAVILL AND SAY.
>> REALLY, THEY'LL MAKE ME ONE?
[01:10:02]
>> YEAH. WE'VE MADE IT FOR THE ROBOTICS AREA, TOO. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY'LL MAKE IT.
I CAN'T PROMISE, BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS BUTTER THEM UP.
PUT SOME DONUTS, TELL THEM SOME STUDENTS NEED TO MAKE THEM.
THEY LOVE MAKING STUFF. THAT'S WHY WE GOT THAT MAKER SPACE.
>> ARE ALL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES MANDATORY TO ATTEND IN PERSON? BECAUSE SOME KIDS DO IT JUST REMOTELY.
>> YEAH. THE ONLY IN PERSON REQUIREMENTS IN THIS YEAR WAS THAT IF YOU WERE GOING TO TAKE A MATH FINAL, FOR ORIGINAL CREDIT, YOU HAD TO DO IT IN PERSON.
NEXT YEAR, WE'RE GOING TO ADJUST THAT TO REQUIRE CREDIT RECOVERY AS WELL.
JUST BECAUSE OF THAT AI, ONE STUDENT GOT A A WHO FAILED THE FIRST YEAR AND IT WAS LIKE, WELL, MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE HAD YOU IN PERSON.
BUT THOSE ARE THE ONLY IN PERSON REQUIREMENTS.
ASIDE FROM OUR ML LEARNERS, MIKE.
>> THEY COULD BE DOING INGENUITY AT HOME AND JUST OKAY.
>> OF THE 500 STUDENTS ENROLLED, OBVIOUSLY, THERE'S NOT 500 STUDENTS IN PERSON.
>> BECAUSE LIKE 330 OF THEM ARE PE AND HEALTH, SO THEY'RE ALL.
YOU HAVE WAY LESS PEOPLE COMING IN PERSON.
>> YEAH, I THINK OUR BIGGEST WITH THE FIRST WEEK, WE HAD MAYBE 60 KIDS, AND THEN THE LAST WEEK, WE HAD MAYBE 15.
>> I THINK DR. DAN WOULD SAY THAT AN ONLINE PROGRAM WITH AN IN PERSON OPTION IS THE MOST POWERFUL ONLINE COMPONENT.
THAT'S WHAT WE TRY TO REPLICATE OR THE SUMMER IS.
IF YOU NEED SUPPORT, OR IF WE THINK YOU NEED SUPPORT, YOU HAVE A SPACE TO COME IN AND GET THAT SUPPORT.
BUT IF YOU DON'T, THEN YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH THE GOALS OF THE COURSE ONLINE.
>> HOW MANY OF THE PARENTS DO YOU KNOW THAT I REMEMBER WHEN WE DID, IT WAS JUGGLED LIKE THAT.
HOW MANY OF THE PARENTS DO YOU THINK UNDERSTAND THAT SUMMER SCHOOL TODAY IS DIFFERENT FROM SUMMER SCHOOL WHEN THEY WERE? THAT AGE. IT IS THIS BLEND OF IN PERSON AND AT HOME, THAT STUDENTS ARE LEARNING SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS, WHEREAS WHEN WE'RE THAT AGE, YOU HAD TO SHOW UP EVERY DAY, SIT IN A CHAIR.
I'M CURIOUS WHEN WE'VE TALKED ABOUT OTHER THINGS ABOUT THE PROGRAMS THAT ARE OFFERED.
DO PARENTS REALLY KNOW YOU SHOULD BE ENCOURAGING YOUR KID TO DO THIS BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GO TO THE SEASIDE FOR THE DAY? NO PROBLEM.
THEY CAN BE ON THEIR LAPTOP IN THE CAR ON THE WAY THEY'RE IN BACK AND GET THIS DONE.
I JUST WONDER HOW MANY STUDENTS DON'T DO IT BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS THINK, THAT'S GOING TO CUT INTO OUR TRIP TO GO TO SPOKANE FOR A FEW DAYS OR GO UP IN THE MOUNTAINS, YOU CAN DO IT ANYWAY.
>> YEAH, I THINK THAT WORD I HAVE A 10TH GRADER AND I THINK THE WORD IS PRETTY OUT THERE ABOUT THE OPTION FOR REMOTE LEARNING.
MANY OF THE PARENTS, I KNOW CERTAINLY MY SMALL CIRCLE HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THAT.
I THINK THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ONLINE COMPONENT IS PRETTY WIDESPREAD.
THERE'S A REALLY NICE WEBSITE THAT THE TEAM HAS ALSO BUILT DESCRIBES WHAT THE LEARNING IS LIKE.
WHEN SUMMER SCHOOL INFORMATION GOES OUT, MANY PEOPLE CLICK ON THAT WEBSITE AND THEN GET A GOOD FEEL FOR WHAT IT FEELS AND LOOKS LIKE. EXCELLENT.
>> I WASN'T PART OF THE TEAM WHEN THIS WENT OUT, BUT I THINK THE SUMMER SCHOOLS FOR HIGH SCHOOL GET SENT OUT TO EVERYONE ALL AT ONCE TO SAY THIS IS AVAILABLE, SO IT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO GO SEARCH FOR.
I THINK YOU STILL NEED PARENTS TODAY THAT THINK GRADING IS THE WAY THAT IT WAS WHEN I WAS THAT YOUNG.
BUT IT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS I'M GLAD THAT'S REINFORCED WITH THEM BECAUSE I THINK YOU HAVEN'T SHOWN THE RESULTS OF HOW STUDENT PERFORMANCE IMPROVES, BUT I'LL TAKE IT BUT IT DOES, THEIR PERFORMANCE IMPROVES.
THE MORE WE CAN DO TO GET PARENTS TO SEE THAT, THEY'RE MORE PROBABLY THE RATE LIMITTER THAN STUDENTS BECAUSE THEY THINK IT'S NOT GOING TO FIT INTO OUR SUMMER PLANS.
>> I THINK IF I SAT LONG ENOUGH, SILENT, EVERY QUESTION WILL BE ANSWERED.
ALL OF THOSE FOR MY QUESTION AS TO WHEN DOES THE STUFF GO OUT? HOW DO WE KNOW WHEN THIS IS STARTING? HOW IS IT ADVERTISED AND SO FORTH, BUT I THINK YOU ANSWERED ALL OF THAT.
THERE WAS A QUESTION THAT'S GONE.
BUT WHEN YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT ALL THE KIDS AND HOW WELL THEY WERE DOING, AND WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY THIS IS FOR THEM,IT GIVES ME GOOSE BUMPS TO SEE HOW WELL THEY'RE DOING AND HOW SATISFYING THIS IS.
ALSO, SPEAKING BACK TO WHAT PARENTS THOUGHT, I FELT WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I THINK BACK THEN, MAYBE IF YOU FAILED A CLASS WAS WHEN YOU TOOK SUMMER SCHOOL.
TAKING SUMMER SCHOOL WAS LIKE, NO.
DON'T TELL ANYONE YOU'RE TAKING SUMMER SCHOOL BECAUSE THAT MEANT YOU FAIL SOMETHING.
BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE ANYMORE AT THIS POINT EITHER, WHICH IS REALLY NICE.
>> JUST A SPECIAL THANKS TO DAN HOLD AND JULIE AND GENE.
MIKE DID AN AMAZING JOB AND THEN YOU GUYS ALL KNOW SHANNON AND SHE WAS SO HELPFUL, BIG THANKS TO HER.
FOR ME, FOR HR, ACCOUNTING AND TECH, THIS WAS A BIG LEARNING CURVE FOR ME THIS YEAR AND I HAD LOTS OF SUPPORT AND LOTS OF HELP, SO IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE,
[01:15:01]
AND WE CRUSHED IT.>> HIGH SCHOOL ROCKED. YOU GUYS. WE DID SO.
>> IT'S A GOOD [INAUDIBLE]. SUMMER.
[4. SYTEMS/PATHWAYS]
BRINGS US TO OUR LAST AGENDA ITEM, WHICH I'M GOING TO TURN OVER TO GAIL, I BELIEVE, AND THAT'S JUST GOING THROUGH SOME LOGISTICS AND CALENDAR PLANNING FOR THE BOARD FOR SOME UPCOMING EVENTS.>> I'M TRYING TO LOOK UP, DO WE GIVE CREDIT PROFICIENCY CREDIT? I'M TRYING TO LOOK UP TO SEE IF THIS IS A NEIGHBORING DISTRICT POLICY OR A STATE POLICY.
IF A STUDENT FAILS AN ENGLISH CLASS OR A HISTORY CLASS AND THEN THEY GET A C BETTER THE NEXT YEAR THAT WE GO BACK AND GIVE THEM A PASS.
IF YOU'VE MET THE STANDARDS FOR SOPHOMORE ENGLISH CLEARLY, YOU MEET FRESHMAN ENGLISH.
DO WE HAVE THAT PROCESS IN OUR DISTRICT? IS THAT A STATE THING, DO YOU KNOW?
>> IT IS A POLICY IN OUR DISTRICT, AND IT'S NOT WIDELY USED.
IT IS A POLICY IN OUR DISTRICT, AND IT IS USED OFTEN.
BUT I WOULDN'T SAY IT'S NOT UNIVERSALLY APPLIED TO ALL STUDENTS.
>> THERE'S TYPICALLY DO ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS.
>> ARE YOU SAYING THAT EVERY KID WHO FAILS A CLASS AND THEN TAKES THE NEXT LEVEL AND GETS A C OR BETTER DOESN'T NECESSARILY GET CREDIT FOR THAT?
>> YEAH. IT DEPENDS ON THE COURSE AS WELL.
ENGLISH IS A COMMON ONE REMEMBER.
>> YEAH. WE HAVE A WHOLE LIST OF WHAT COUNTS.
THERE'S MATH, ENGLISH OR LANGUAGES.
I THINK THERE'S SOME HISTORY ON THERE AS WELL.
BUT WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT KIDS NOT MEETING THEIR GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND WE CAN HELP THEM.
I DON'T KNOW IF COLLEGES WILL LIKE IT IF YOU HAVE A PASS TO FRESHMAN ENGLISH INSTEAD OF A GRADE, BUT IT'S A PATH TO GET KIDS GRADUATED.
>> I THINK THAT'S WHY IT'S A CASE BY CASE BASIS.
IT'S NOT AUTOMATIC, BUT WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS.
>> IT'S NOT AUTOMATIC, BUT THE COUNSELOR SHOULD BE THINK COMING THROUGH THAT AND APPLYING IT TO EVERY STUDENT WHO EARNS IT.
>> TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THAT IS USED, AND I DO I THINK IT'S A CASE BY CASE FOR STUDENTS.
A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS ARE HAVE THE ASPIRATIONS OF UNIVERSITY AND THEN MAKE SURE THAT THOSE ARE INTACT AT THE END OF THEIR FOUR YEARS.
>> THE FIRST ITEM THAT WE HAVE UP IS THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT'S GOING TO BE THE 20TH AND 21ST.
I JUST NEED TO KNOW IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED IN ATTENDING.
>> I THINK THE PLAN WAS THAT WE WERE JUST GOING TO DO THE VIRTUAL VERSION OF IT.
>> EVERYBODY IS INTERESTED IN DOING THE VIRTUAL VERSION.
>> IT'S FREE, EXCEPT FOR THE ONE PERSON WHO HAS TO VOTE.
WE WOULD JUST PASS ALONG THE CREDENTIALS.
>> YEAH. THEY'LL SEND ME AS THE LEAD REP.
I SHOULD GET THE LOGIN CREDENTIALS, AND THEN WE CAN JUST SHARE THAT AMONGST THE FIVE OF US.
AS LONG AS WE'VE GOT ONE PERSON WHO CAN LOG IN VIRTUALLY THE WHOLE TIME, THEN WE SHOULD BE GOOD.
I JUST NEED SOMEBODY TO COVER FRIDAY DURING THE DAY, BUT I'M HAPPY TO DO FRIDAY EVENING.
>> I CAN DO FRIDAY DURING THE DAY BECAUSE I DID IT LAST YEAR AT MY OFFICE.
IF I HAVE TO LOG OUT, I CAN CLICK ON TO EVERYONE CAN WATCH.
BUT WE JUST HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WHAT I VOTE FOR IS WHAT WE AGREED I SHOULD VOTE FOR. THAT'S THE ONLY [INAUDIBLE]
>> THEY'LL BE SENDING THE POSITION SHOULD BE COMING OUT.
I ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT EARLIER.
I HAVEN'T GOT ANYTHING THOUGH.
>> OKAY. AS SOON AS I GET THAT THOUGH, I'LL PASS IT ON FOR YOU TO SEE.
I'LL BE ALL OF WADA POSITIONS AND THE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE COMMITTEE.
I'LL SEND THOSE OUT. BUT YEAH, I'M HAPPY TO DO ALL OF SATURDAY IF I NEED TO, BUT I JUST FRIDAY, IT WOULD BE GREAT IF I GET SOMEBODY ELSE.
>> HOW ABOUT I START ON THE FRIDAY AND THEN IF SOMEONE ELSE.
MAYBE YOU LOG ON AND WE START WATCHING TO SEE HOW IT GOES BECAUSE.
>> IT'S MOVE IN DATE UNIVERSITY, SO I WON'T BE THERE.
>> YEAH AND THEN WE CAN TAKE TEAM.
>> WE'VE GOT THE SCHEDULE ON THE BOARD AVAILABILITY TIME, SO I'LL PUT DOWN HALF DAY FOR FRIDAY THEN.
>> LAST YEAR IT WAS DONE SATURDAY MORNING.
I LOGGED IN FOR LIKE AN HOUR OR TWO, AND THEN IT WAS OVER, SO I DON'T THINK IT'S GOING TO TAKE.
>> I THINK ON FRIDAY, I DIDN'T EVEN NECESSARILY GO TILL FIVE OR WHATEVER THE TIME.
IT DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH CONVERSATION THERE IS AMONGST THEM.
[01:20:03]
IT'S FUN TO WATCH.>> THIS IS THE BIG ONE THAT WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT IS THE WADA ANNUAL CONFERENCE.
TRACY HAD SENT OVER SOME GREAT QUESTIONS AND I FILLED IN AS MUCH AS I COULD ON GIVING THE ANSWERS.
WE NEED TO HAVE A DISCUSSION AS TO WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO.
>> JUST TO FILL THAT IN. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS ALL SAW THIS AHEAD OF TIME, BUT I HAD ASKED HER, HOW MUCH IS IT PER NIGHT? I LOOKED UP AIR FARE AND GUESSED HOW MUCH AIRFARE WAS.
I KNOW THIS TIME WE COULD JUST STAY ONE NIGHT BECAUSE THE CONFERENCE ENDS ON SATURDAY AT 1:45, SO WE CAN REALLY SHRINK IT DOWN, BUT STILL THE COST IS $8,000.
IS THAT WHAT YOU CAME UP WITH AS A TOTAL? I DON'T SEE IT ON THAT PAGE.
>> IF THE COST IS JUST TO STAY IN THE HOTEL, IT'S 142 A NIGHT FOR THREE NIGHTS EQUALS 492, 55 PER PERSON.
FOR ALL SIX OF YOU, THAT'S ALMOST 3,000.
>> I THINK AS YOU SAID, ITS A GRAND TOTAL $8,295.
IF WE ALL WENT AND WE ALL DID ALL THE STUFF.
YEAH. WITHOUT FOOD AND GROUND TRANSPORTATION.
>> I THINK IT STILL ONLY GROUND TRANSPORTATION AND FOOD.
>> MY ONLY OTHER QUESTION THAT I SEE IS UP THERE IS WE ALREADY PAID FOR THE WADA REGISTRATION FOR THIS YEAR AND WHETHER IT WAS REFUNDABLE OR NOT, AND IT LOOKS LIKE THEY CHARGE US $125.
>> IT SHOULD BE CANCELED, AND THEY WON'T TRANSFER IT TO NEXT YEAR?
>> WHAT ARE WE DECIDING? ARE WE JUST LOOKING AT IT?
>> WOULD YOU LIKE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THIS CONFERENCE AND EVERYBODY ATTEND? OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO PAIR IT DOWN? WOULD YOU LIKE TO NOT GO THIS YEAR? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO?
>> I THINK WE SHOULD SEND FOR SURE, MATTHEW AND BOMANI, YOU HAD SAID, YOU MAYBE WOULD WANT TO GO.
I FEEL LIKE I DON'T NEED TO GO.
I'VE BEEN 17 TIMES? I THINK OUR BIGGEST VALUE FOR GOING BESIDES THE OR ONE OF THE BIG VALUES TO GOING IS THE DISCUSSIONS AMONG OURSELVES.
WE COULD PLAN A DINNER AT SOMEBODY'S HOUSE AND GET TOGETHER AND HAVE THOSE POST CONFERENCE.
WHEN YOU GUYS GET BACK, SHARE SOME OF YOUR LEARNINGS AND WE CAN GET THE BENEFIT OF THAT.
I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU GUYS FEEL ABOUT THAT HAVING BEEN A LOT BEFORE.
I MEAN, I LOVE GOING, BUT I ALSO COULD COMPLETELY TAKE A PASS THIS YEAR GIVEN IT'S NOT A LOT OF MONEY, BUT IT'S MONEY.
>> I AGREE WITH THAT. I'VE BEEN MANY TIMES AND I LOVE GOING.
IT BREAKS MY HEART A LITTLE BIT TO THINK THAT I MIGHT NOT GO.
BUT JUST IN THE STATE OF WHAT WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT WITH OUR BUDGET AND STOPPING TRAVEL AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL, I JUST FEEL LIKE THAT THIS MIGHT BE SOMETHING THAT WE DON'T GO TO THIS YEAR OR EITHER WHATEVER WE DECIDE, I FEEL LIKE IF WE DECIDE NOT TO GO, I DON'T NEED TO GO.
I'M LIKE YOU, BUT I DO THINK FOR MATTHEW, IT'S SUPER VALUE AND I THINK BOMANI, YOU'VE BEEN ONCE, RIGHT?
>> I HAVE AND MY ISSUE IS I COULD DEFINITELY BE THERE FOR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, BUT I'M NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO GO THURSDAY.
>> THURSDAY IS LIKE THE BOARD BOOT CAMP, WHICH I THINK MATTHEW YOU DID.
THEY HAVE THE SCHEDULE UP THERE, BUT I'M WITH YOU, CONNIE.
I'M LIKE, I'D BE REALLY SAD NOT TO GO, BUT I'M ALSO VERY CAUTIOUS OF THE MONEY THAT IT COSTS, EVEN IF IT'S $10,000 OR IT'S $8,000.
AND IF I CAN GIVE THAT UP, I WOULD DO THAT.
>> NEXT YEAR, AGAIN, IT'S IN THE SEATTLE AREA SO WE COULD DRIVE.
THIS IS EITHER A SIX-HOUR DRIVE OR A PLANE RIDE.
EITHER WAY, YOU'RE GOING TO PAY PAYING FOR GAS OR PAYING FOR MILES OR.
>> I DO FEEL LIKE IT IS A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE TO DRIVE.
IF YOU CHOSE TO DO THAT, I THINK IT WOULD CUT THE AIRFARE DOWN CONSIDERABLY, BUT YOU'RE STILL PAYING FOR THE HOTEL.
>> WHAT AMOUNT OF TIME, THEN WE HAVE TO LEAVE THE DAY BEFORE AND THE TIME OUT OF WORK.
>> WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS, COREY?
>> SORRY, I WAS MUTED. I THINK AT LEAST SENDING MATTHEW AS A NEW BOARD MEMBER IS GOING TO BE IMPORTANT TO DO THERE.
ARE WE GOOD WITH JUST SENDING MATTHEW THEN OR BOMANI, DID YOU WANT?
>> I MEAN, I'M GOOD WITH JUST MATTHEW GOING AS WELL.
[01:25:01]
I MEAN, THE ONLY THING I HAVE TO LOOK AT IS TO SEE WHAT'S ON FRIDAY IF IT'S SOMETHING THAT I ABSOLUTELY WANT TO GO TO.>> BUT I DON'T THINK THEY HAVE THE BREAKOUT SESSIONS OUT YET.
>> IN THE BOARD AVAILABILITY, I BELIEVE.
>> BECAUSE I LOOKED FOR WHAT THE SESSIONS ARE BECAUSE SOMETIMES THERE ARE SOME REALLY GOOD ONES, AND WE'RE LIKE, OH, I CAN'T WAIT BUT I DON'T KNOW WHEN THOSE COME OUT, PROBABLY CLOSER TO CONFERENCE TIME.
>> BUT IF WE HAVE ONE REGISTRATION, THEN YOU CAN GO IN AND DOWNLOAD ANY OF THE SLIDES OR INFORMATION FROM ANY SESSION. THEN WE CAN.
>> THE ONLY OTHER THING THAT I'M THINKING, AND ESPECIALLY THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE BECAUSE YOU'RE RIGHT.
WE'VE BEEN TO A LOT OF THEM IS SENDING ONE PERSON BY THEMSELVES.
WOULD IT BE BETTER TO HAVE A SET LIKE SEND TWO PEOPLE SO YOU CAN AT LEAST HAVE A CONVERSATION WHILE YOU'RE UP THERE OR LIKE, AS MATTHEW BEING A NEW BOARD MEMBER.
WHAT IS IT THAT WE DO SO THAT IN THE MOMENT YOU CAN GET A LITTLE BIT MORE OF THAT INFORMATION? WHAT I MEAN.
>> I ALSO THINK INTRODUCING BECAUSE WE KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE OR THERE'S PEOPLE YOU KNOW.
>> THAT'S I WAS THINKING MAYBE INSTEAD OF SENDING, BECAUSE WE USUALLY SEND FIVE BOARD MEMBERS PLUS THE SUPERINTENDENT, SO SIX PEOPLE.
MAYBE INSTEAD OF DOING SIX, WE CUT IT DOWN TO TWO.
MAYBE EITHER SEND MATTHEW AND JOHN OR MATTHEW AND ONE OF THE OTHER BOARD MEMBERS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THAT.
>> I DON'T REALLY HAVE A PREFERENCE. THERE'S TWO GOALS.
EDUCATION AS A MEMBER, WHICH I THINK APPLIES TO ALL OF US, BECAUSE THINGS CHANGE.
THEN IT IS THAT OPPORTUNITY TO FORM A COHESIVE BOND.
I THINK WE SAID WE'RE GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER PLANNING SESSION TO THIS YEAR, WE HAVE A WHOLE OTHER DAY.
I DON'T REALLY HAVE A PREFERENCE, AND I WILL ATTEND IT.
I SAID I'D BE HAPPY TO ATTEND IT AT MY COST IF I NEEDED TO, BUT I THINK IT'S WHATEVER WORKS HERE.
WE HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE SOME REDUCTION IN BUDGET, WE EARLIER SAID WE WOULD DEFINITELY DO THE NO FOOD, THERE'S FREE FOOD THAT COMES TO THE CONFERENCE, ANYTHING ELSE YOU PICK UP.
I'M OPEN EITHER WAY. IT WOULD BE NICE, OF COURSE, IT'S ALWAYS BENEFICIAL.
THE REASON TO DO THIS IS TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS.
HAVING SOMEONE THAT CAN INTRODUCE, IT JUST REDUCES THAT BURDEN ON MYSELF.
BUT GOING OUT AND SHAKING PEOPLE'S HANDS, THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM.
YOU GOT TO SEE ME DO THAT ON FRIDAY NIGHT.
I WON'T JUST SHAKING STRANGERS HANDS.
NO, BUT I THINK THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING.
I STILL THINK WE SHOULD DEFINITELY SAY WE'RE ELIMINATING THE FOOD BECAUSE THAT'S JUST PART OF THE TRAVEL POLICY NOW ANYWAY.
>> ONE NIGHT OF THE CONFERENCE, IT'S BOARDS NIGHT OUT.
THEY DON'T PROVIDE AND THERE'S NO DINNERS. IS THAT RIGHT? WE USUALLY HAVE PIZZA ONE NIGHT AND THEN A BOARD NIGHT OUT.
>> YEAH, I MEAN, IT'S A BUMMER NOT TO GO BECAUSE WE GOT SO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT STRATEGIC PLANNING LAST YEAR THAT WE BROUGHT BACK, AND THAT WAS REALLY VITAL.
BUT IT'S NOT LIKE THAT EVERY YEAR.
THERE'S LOTS OF LEARNING THAT GOES ON, BUT WHAT WE LEARN AND CAN COME BACK AND APPLY.
BUT GIVEN THE FINANCIAL SITUATION AND THE LEGISLATURE, THERE'S GOING TO BE A LOT OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
LIKE I SAID, IT'S NOT LIKE WE CAN'T HAVE ACCESS TO THAT INFORMATION AND I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU GO.
I'D LOVE FOR BOMANI TO GO IF IT'S WORTHWHILE.
>> IF I COULD LOOK AT THE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AND I'M UP FOR THAT FOR SURE.
I CAN'T TAKE THIS DAY OFF AT THIS POINT.
>> OKAY, THEY STILL HAVE NOT LISTED WHAT THE ROOM. SORRY.
>> WHAT I'M HEARING JUST FOR CONSENSUS SAKE AND TO MOVE ON NOW IS, LET'S GO FROM SIX PEOPLE DOWN TO TWO PEOPLE AND WE'LL FIGURE OUT WHO THOSE TWO PEOPLE ARE THEN. DOES THAT WORK?
>> YEAH, AND THAT'S A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT COST SAVINGS THERE FOR US, TOO, SO.
CALENDAR DATES, IS THERE ANYTHING HERE THAT ANYONE NEEDS TO LET ME KNOW ABOUT?
>> WHO'S GOING TO THE LEDBETTER THING TOMORROW? IS EVERYBODY? OKAY.
>> I'M ALREADY DOUBLE BOOKED BEFORE THAT, SO I DON'T THINK I'M GOING TO BE ABLE TO MAKE.
I'VE GOT SOME PARENT MEETINGS I HAVE TO DO.
I'M GOING TO SEE IF I CAN MOVE SOME OF THEM AROUND A LITTLE BIT, BUT YEAH.
>> I MEAN, TWO BY ONE, WHATEVER FOR ME.
BUT I WAS GOING TO SAY IT WAS ON THE 18TH, THAT IS ONE DAY.
IF IT HELPS YOU TO REDO PEOPLE AND GET ME IN, THAT'S GREAT, IF NOT, WE CAN FIGURE THAT OUT.
I TOOK THE DAY OFF BECAUSE I THOUGHT I WAS GOING UP TO YOU DUB,
[01:30:01]
BUT NOW I'M NOT SO I CAN DO A FULL. WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY.>> RIGHT NOW ON THE 18TH, I HAVE COREY AND MATTHEW SCHEDULED.
>> IF THAT TIME WORKS FOR YOU AND OTHERS DON'T, I CAN HAVE A CALL WITH JOHN DIFFERENT TIME.
IF THAT'S A GOOD TIME FOR YOU BOMANI THEN I CAN.
>> COULD BE NICE FOR YOU TO HAVE IT IN PERSON WITH SOMEBODY ELSE FOR A CHANGE.
>> ESPECIALLY SINCE HE'S GOING TO BE OUT.
IS THAT VIRTUAL THAT DAY, SINCE HE'S LEAVING? IS HE HAVING WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY OUT OF OFFICE.
>> WE'RE STILL WORKING ON THAT.
TRYING TO SEE WHAT THE SCHEDULE IS TO SEE IF HE CAN GO AHEAD AND DO SOMETHING.
>> WELL, EARLIER IN THE WEEK, WE CAN COORDINATE A CALL.
>> MY ONLY THING LOOKING AT THAT IS THAT OCTOBER 29TH SITE VISIT.
I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT AT ALL.
I'M GOING TO TRY AND MAKE IT TO PART OF IT, BUT PROBABLY LATER IN THE DAY. I'LL BE THERE.
BUT IS THERE STILL ENOUGH REPRESENTATION OF BOARD MEMBERS THAT CAN MAKE THE 29TH?
>> I KNOW WE ARE TRYING TO PLAN A CASCADIA TECH VISIT ALSO, AND SO IT'D BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHO CAN GO TO THAT BECAUSE IF IT'S ONLY MATTHEW AND I, I'M HAPPY TO GO WITH JUST MATTHEW AND I, BUT WE'VE BEEN THERE MULTIPLE TIMES.
CASCADIA TECH. PERFECT. WELL, YOU'RE INTO.
>> TRACY, I'VE GOT AN EMAIL OUT TO THEM.
IF YOU DON'T MIND CONTACTING YOUR PERSON, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
>> OCTOBER 29TH IS A CONCERT DAY FOR ME.
I'VE GOT A CONCERT THAT NIGHT.
IF IT WAS ANY OTHER DAY IN OCTOBER, I'D BE FINE.
>> THE CASCADIA ONE JUST CAME WHEN TRACY AND I HAD COFFEE, AND I WAS LIKE, WELL, DO WE WANT TO SHOW THE COLLABORATIVE SIDE? NOT AS A BOARD VISIT TO THERE, JUST AGAIN, FOR FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES.
>> IT'S A GREAT IDEA TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT, I'D LOVE TO GO.
>> YOU PROBABLY EAT LUNCH THERE TOO.
>> I JUST WANTED TO CHECK IN WITH EVERYONE SINCE I DIDN'T ATTEND THE FIRST FRIDAY TO SEE WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS WERE.
HOW DID IT GO? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO MOVING FORWARD?
PEOPLE CAME AND IT WAS HOT AND IT WAS A FOOTBALL GAME.
BUT THEN THE PEOPLE THAT DID STOP BY, I THINK WE HAD REALLY GREAT CONVERSATIONS.
>> I SAID IT WAS A COMPETITION TO SEE WHICH OF US COULD BE.
>> WE SEATED RIGHT AWAY AND SAY YOU WIN.
WE WENT OVER STRATEGIC PLAN WITH SOME PEOPLE, INVITED PEOPLE TO THE LEDBETTER OPEN HOUSE.
WE TALKED ABOUT THE NEW SAFETY PROTOCOL.
IT WAS GREAT. MAYBE TALK TO 20 PEOPLE, MAYBE PROBABLY.
>> YOU HAVE TO GO THE MORE FREQUENTLY, WE HAD NO CANDY OR FRUIT SNACKS.
IF WE HAD FRUIT SNACKS, I THINK IT WOULD DRAW THE KIDS IN.
IF WE DO OTHER ONES, YOU JUST REWORK IT A LITTLE.
>> THAT'S ALREADY MORE THAN USUALLY ATTEND OUR COFFEE TALKS.
WE'RE ALREADY IN PLUS AT LEAST IT'S AN IMPROVEMENT. IT'S GROWTH.
>> THERE ARE SOME FAMILIES OF YOUNG KIDS WHO AREN'T EVEN IN SCHOOL YET, ONE IS JUST STARTING PRESCHOOL AND IT'S JUST NICE.
I HEARD SOME PEOPLE WALKING BY, LIKE THE SUPERINTENDENT. I DON'T KNOW WHO WE ARE.
THEIR PARENTS WEREN'T EVEN AROUND, AND HE SHOWED THEM THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND THEN THEY LEFT WITH TWO COPIES.
MIGHT BE WATCHING HE WAS THE WINNER THERE BECAUSE HE HAD TWO STUDENTS COME IN, AND THEY WERE YOUNG.
>> I GOT SOME FEEDBACK ON THE NEW DRESS POLICY AT CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL FROM STUDENTS.
>> I THINK IT WAS JUST AN OPEN SPACE TO TALK AND NOT ABOUT ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR.
>> I THINK IT WAS REALLY POSITIVE.
>> I MEAN, I'D RECOMMEND WE DO IT AGAIN. IS THE WEATHER GETS WORSE? MAYBE, WE'LL BE IN THE FIELD MEDICAL ONE BECAUSE THEY HAVE A WHOLE BUNCH OF SPACE, AND HAVE A SNACK AND ENGAGE PEOPLE.
THE MORE WE'RE THERE, THE MORE PEOPLE.
>> IT'S GREAT TO JUST KEEP IT ON THE CALENDAR AND LET'S JUST KEEP PLAYING AND IF NOT EVERYBODY CAN GO, THEN AT LEAST HAVE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE THERE AND THE MORE THAT WE'RE OUT.
>> WE'RE ABLE TO PUT A BIG TENT IN FRONT OF THE THEATERS WHERE THE CHRISTMAS TREE GOES, YOU JUST PLANTED THERE. THAT WAS A GOOD SPOT.
>> MAYBE JUST KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR ANY OTHER DOWNTOWN ORGANIZATIONS THAT EVENTS THAT ARE GOING ON TOO.
DO THEY DO AN OCTOBER FEST ANYMORE? THAT'S BEEN A WHILE.
>> FRIDAYS. IT GETS MORE PEOPLE TO COME DOWN.
BUT AGAIN, WE CAN HAVE THE STRATEGIC PLAN.
WE COULD HAVE CELL PHONE STUFF IN THE FUTURE, SAFETY, BECAUSE WE TALKED TO A FEW ABOUT LEDBETTER, A FEW ABOUT THE RESPONSE PLAN.
WE CAN CHANGE IT UP A LITTLE BIT.
>> LEAVE IT AND JUST AN OPEN FORUM, TOO.
[01:35:03]
>> WE MIGHT NEED TO BRING FRUIT SNACKS FOR THE LITTLE ONES, FOR THE KIDS BECAUSE THEY WERE RUN AFTER.
>> THEY DID OTHER PLACES. THEY'RE LIKE, WHAT CAN WE DO HERE?
>> THEY HAD A COUPLE OF TIMES I'VE BEEN THERE.
THEY HAD POPCORN, SOME CHURCH DID POPCORN.
THEN YOU'RE SMELLING POPCORN THE WHOLE TIME, WHICH IS YOU CAN'T HELP IT.
>> JOHN MADE A MISTAKE HAVING ME SIT HERE BECAUSE ON THE 21ST OF SEPTEMBER, WE HAVE ALL PASS ON DECK, WHICH IS A DECA TAKES OVER THE DOWNTOWN FOR THE DOG.
THAT MIGHT BE A GREAT OPTION. DOG MARE.
>> THEY USUALLY SET UP AROUND 10.
