[00:00:07] WELCOME TO OUR DECEMBER 9TH REGULAR BOARD MEETING. [1. REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER - 5:30 PM] WE'RE GOING TO START THINGS OFF WITH THE PLEDGE. [2. CULTURE] SO IF YOU PLEASE RISE IF YOU'RE ABLE AND JOIN US IN THE PLEDGE MATTHEW MCBRIDE WILL LEAD. I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. THANKS, MATTHEW. NEXT IS THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT, CONNIE HENNESSEY. I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GEOGRAPHICAL REGION OF CAMAS IS LOCATED ON THE ANCESTRAL AND TERRITORIAL LANDS OF THE CHINOOK AND COWLITZ PEOPLE, AND THAT THE CHINOOK ARE STILL FIGHTING TO BE FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED ON THEIR OWN LAND. THANKS, CONNIE. NEXT, I'LL MOVE INTO STUDENT REPORTS. WE HAVE SEVERAL TONIGHT. LET'S START OFF WITH THE STUDENT REPORT FROM LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL. IF YOU WANT TO COME ON UP TO THE MAIN MICROPHONE HERE AND TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON, FEEL FREE TO PULL IT OUT OF THE STAND AND. MICROPHONE SO THAT WE CAN HEAR, FOR THE FOLKS AT HOME, THANK YOU. ASB ADVISORS, FISCAL SECRETARIES AND SOME ADMIN FROM DIFFERENT CAMAS SECONDARY SCHOOLS CAME TOGETHER ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH FOR AN ASB LAW TRAINING. THE TRAINING WAS PROVIDED BY GREG BARKER FROM AWS. OUR VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY WENT WELL. WE BROUGHT IN FOUR VETERANS, INCLUDING ONE OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS, AS PART OF A VETERAN INTERVIEW PANEL. IT WAS AMAZING TO HEAR ABOUT THEM AND THEIR SERVICE AND THINGS THAT THEY TOOK AWAY FROM IT. WORLD KINDNESS DAY WAS NOVEMBER 13TH. LIBERTY'S ASB HOSTED SOME ACTIVITIES DURING LUNCHES TO CELEBRATE. ONE ACTIVITY WAS THE COMPLIMENT BALL PIT, WHICH ALLOWED TWO FRIENDS TO GRAB A BALL AND USE THE WORD WRITTEN ON IT TO GIVE A GENUINE COMPLIMENT. ANOTHER ACT ACTIVITY WAS KINDNESS CARDS THAT STUDENTS COULD WRITE TO EACH OTHER OR TO STAFF. WE THINK THAT PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR KINDNESS WILL HELP KINDNESS TO SPREAD. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH WAS WACKY HAIR OR WACKY SOCKS SPIRIT DAY. WE HAD SOME PRETTY WACKY PARTICIPANTS AND IT WAS A FUN WAY TO HAVE PEOPLE EXPRESS THEMSELVES. LIBERTY HOSTED CONFERENCES ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20TH FROM 1:35 P.M. TO 5:45 P.M. THESE CONFERENCES WERE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILIES TO CONNECT WITH TEACHERS AND STAFF TO HELP SUPPORT STUDENTS. OVER 100 FAMILIES TOOK PART IN THE PROCESS, WHICH IS A FABULOUS START. ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22ND, LIBERTY HAD THEIR SECOND ANNUAL DRAMA PALOOZA PRODUCTION AT CARVER THEATER. STUDENTS ACTED IN ONE ACT MONOLOGUES AND SOME IMPROV SCENES. IT WAS HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND A SUPER FUN NIGHT TO ALL WHO ATTENDED. CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. EDMUNDSON AND THE DRAMA PALOOZA CAST. OUR ANNUAL STUFF THE BUS FUNDRAISER JUST ENDED ON FRIDAY. WE WERE ABLE TO BRING IN OVER 2000 ITEMS OF NONPERISHABLE FOOD FOR THE CHILDREN'S HOME SOCIETY AND THE CAROL PROGRAM. CHS SHOWED UP WITH THEIR MARCHING BAND AND CHEERLEADERS TO CELEBRATE THE HARD WORK PUT IN. LIBERTY BAND HAS A BAND CONCERT AT CARVER THEATER TONIGHT AT 7 P.M.. BOYS SOCCER LOOKS TO FINISH THE SEASON STRONG AS THEY ARE IN FIRST PLACE IN THE LEAGUE. THE CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE ON THURSDAY. GOOD LUCK GUYS. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL HAD ANOTHER DOMINANT SEASON AS WELL AND WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE GREAT SAINT HELENS LEAGUE TOURNAMENT TOMORROW FROM 5 TO 8 P.M.. GOOD LUCK LADIES. THIS WEEK ASB WILL BE HANDING OUT WINTER WISHES TO STUDENTS. STUDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REQUEST A WISH FOR OF AN ITEM THAT IS IN A REASONABLE VALUE AND IS SCHOOL APPROPRIATE. OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE AS MANY OF THESE WISHES AS POSSIBLE, AS WE CANNOT GUARANTEE HOW THIS WINTER SEASON WILL LOOK FOR STUDENTS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL. THIS HAS BECOME A SUCCESSFUL EVENT THAT IS FUNDED SOLELY BY STAFF AND ASB FAMILIES. LIBERTY'S COLLECTIVE CHOIR GROUP HAD A CHOIR HAS HAS A CHOIR CONCERT NEXT MONDAY, DECEMBER 16TH AT 7 P.M. AT THE CARVER THEATER. BOYS BASKETBALL TRYOUTS WILL TAKE PLACE MONDAY, DECEMBER 16TH THROUGH WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18TH AFTER SCHOOL. NEXT MONDAY THE 16TH, ASB IS KICKING OFF A SPIRIT WEEK WITH A CANDY JAR GUESSING GAME DURING LUNCHES. STUDENTS WILL ATTEMPT TO GUESS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CANDIES IN THE JAR, AND THE WINNER WILL WIN THE JAR OF CANDY. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17TH IS BRING A STUFFED ANIMAL OR BLANKET SPIRIT DAY. STUDENTS CAN BRING IN THEIR FAVORITE STUFFED ANIMAL TO SHOW OFF, OR A NICE COMFY BLANKET TO USE IN CLASS. WE ARE REALLY EXCITED FOR THE SPIRIT DAY ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18TH, WHICH IS SWAP SPIRIT DAY. [00:05:03] STUDENTS DRESS LIKE TEACHERS AND TEACHERS DRESSED LIKE STUDENTS. IT WOULD BE HIGHLY ENTERTAINING. THURSDAY THE 19TH IS FESTIVE PAJAMA SPIRIT DAY. STUDENTS AND STAFF CAN WEAR FESTIVE PAJAMAS OR OR JUST REGULAR PAJAMAS TO PARTICIPATE. GIRLS SOCCER TRYOUTS WILL TAKE PLACE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19TH AND FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20TH AFTER SCHOOL. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20TH WILL KICK OFF WITH LIBERTY JAZZ BAND PLAYING IN THE COMMONS BEFORE SCHOOL, WHILE ASB SERVES HOT CHOCOLATE. THE FINAL DAY OF OUR SPIRIT WEEK IS UGLY SWEATER SPIRIT DAY. STUDENTS AND STAFF GET TO WEAR THEIR UGLY SWEATERS TO CELEBRATE. OUR NEXT PRIDE MART OF THE YEAR WILL BE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20TH DURING LUNCHES. STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN PRIDE TICKETS AND THEN SPEND THOSE PRIDE TICKETS AT PRIDE MART TO GET TREATS, PRIZES AND OTHER SNACKS. STUDENTS LOVE THIS ACTIVITY AND IT IS A GREAT WAY TO REWARD THOSE WHO ARE DOING THINGS WE WANT THEM TO DO THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY. MOVING INTO NEXT YEAR, KNOWLEDGEABLE KICKS OFF IN JANUARY. OUR MLK ASSEMBLY WILL BE ON MONDAY THE 13TH. OUR GUEST SPEAKER WILL BE JAMES JAMES LAYMAN FROM [INAUDIBLE]. UPSTANDER WEEK WILL BE TUESDAY, JANUARY 14TH THROUGH FRIDAY, JANUARY 17TH TO CONTINUE THE WORK IN MEMORY OF DR. KING. EACH DAY WILL INCLUDE SPECIFIC COMPONENTS OF HOW TO BE AN UPSTANDER AT LIBERTY. THESE DETAILS ARE STILL BEING WORKED ON. TO CONTINUE TO HONOR DR. KING AND HIS MEMORY LIBERTY WILL BE CREATING SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22ND AND WEDNESDAY 29TH AND WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH. A SERVANT LEADERSHIP STYLE REQUIRES OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE. THESE WILL BE THINGS THAT CAN HAPPEN IN THE IN CLASSROOMS, IN THE SCHOOL AND IN OUR COMMUNITY. CAMP LIBERTY IS COMING BACK TO LIBERTY. OUR WEB PROGRAM IS TAKING OVER THE RUNNING AND PLANNING OF THIS EVENT, WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 31ST. THIS EVENT IS AN AFTER SCHOOL, IS AFTER SCHOOL, AND RUNS UNTIL 9 P.M.. HISTORICALLY, THIS EVENT IS FOR SIXTH GRADERS ONLY AND IS A WAY TO BUILD COMMUNITY AND CELEBRATE TOGETHER. STUDENTS WILL BE CREATING AND RUNNING STATIONS FOR STUDENTS TO ROTATE THROUGH AS ADVISORY CLASSES. LIBERTY WILL BE HOSTING A CONFERENCE WITH SCOTT BACKOVICH ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH. THIS CONFERENCE WILL INCLUDE CHS AND SKYRIDGE, WHO HAVE BOTH CONFIRMED THEIR ATTENDANCE. ODYSSEY, DISCOVERY AND HAYES HAVE ALSO BEEN INVITED TOO. SCOTT BACKOVICH RUNS A COMPANY CALLED ENVOLVE, WHICH FOCUSES ON SEEING AND SERVING ALL STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS, NOT JUST THOSE WHO ARE MORE EXTROVERTED. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME A CONFERENCE LIKE THIS HAS BEEN DONE AT DISTRICT LEVEL AS FAR AS [INAUDIBLE]. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME HERE TONIGHT. WE APPRECIATE BEING ABLE TO SHARE WITH YOU [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU. ANY QUESTIONS? QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? NO I HAVE ONE ONE QUESTION. SO YOU GUYS RATE YOUR TEACHERS ON WHO BEST DRESSES LIKE A STUDENT, OR IS IT JUST FOR FUN? BECAUSE I'M WONDERING IF SOMEBODY ALWAYS WINS AND WHAT DO YOU WEAR IF YOU HAVE TO DRESS LIKE A STUDENT? HEADPHONES. YEAH, I THINK THIS WILL BE OUR FIRST YEAR DOING IT, BUT I'LL HAVE TO CHECK. AND IT ISN'T REALLY A COMPETITION, IT'S JUST TO SEE WHO PARTICIPATES. BUT DO YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHO'S GOING TO WIN? I MEAN, WE HAVE SOME PRETTY GOOD TEACHERS. YEAH. OKAY. WE EXPECT PHOTOS, I EXPECT PHOTOS. YEAH. PHOTOS. PHOTOS ARE A MUST REPORT. YOU CAN INCLUDE THAT IN YOUR NEXT REPORT. YES. THANK YOU, THANK YOU. ANYTHING ELSE FOR THEM? THANK YOU SO MUCH. OUR NEXT STUDENT REPORT COMES FROM THE FOLKS AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL. COME ON UP. GOOD EVENING. I'M JACK WALSH, THE ASB PRESIDENT AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL, AND I'M LOGAN ROBINSON THE ASB RALLY COMMISSIONER AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL. I GOT TO SAY, IT FEELS LIKE WE KIND OF JUST WERE HERE TO GIVE YOU A REPORT. IT WAS TWO WEEKS AGO, AND WE HAD THAT BREAK. I HOPE YOU GUYS HAD A WONDERFUL FALL BREAK, BUT WE'RE BACK. SOME THINGS HAPPENED THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO REPORT. I'LL START WITH THE STUDENT OF THE MONTH. WE ANNOUNCED THE STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. TEACHERS GET TO DECIDE THE STUDENT OF THE MONTH AT EACH GRADE LEVEL, BASED ON STUDENTS WHO EMBODY THE EPIC QUALITIES OF DISCOVERY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, PRODUCING, INNOVATING AND COLLABORATING. AND THE WINNERS FROM EACH GRADE LEVEL THIS MONTH WERE, THE FRESHMAN WAS ROBIN BEALL, THE SOPHOMORE WAS JUSTIN KILK, THE JUNIOR WAS RAY JEWELL, AND THE SENIOR WAS SOPHIE KNIGHT. SO CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE FOUR FOR DOING A GREAT JOB IN THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER SPECIFICALLY, AND GETTING VOTED ON BY EACH TEACHER AT OUR SCHOOL. THE NEXT EVENT WE HAVE IS THE SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR, WHICH STARTED JUST TODAY. I BELIEVE IT GOES UNTIL WINTER BREAK. WE'RE EXCITED FOR THAT. IT'S ALWAYS FUN TO HAVE THAT HAPPEN, GIVE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE BOOKS. MOVE ON TO LOGAN NOW. HELLO SO AS YOU HEARD BEFORE, THE STUFF THE BUS ENDED, CHS CAME OVER AND GRABBED THE DONATIONS AND THIS IS THE MOST ITEMS DONATED IN DHS HISTORY, AND THE SENIORS WON BY A LONG [00:10:07] SHOT. SO I'M REALLY PROUD OF THEM. AND WE HAVE THE MAKER MARKET. OUR MAKER MARKET IS ON THURSDAY AFTER SCHOOL, AND IT'S STUDENT MADE AND STUDENT DESIGNED PRODUCTS THAT YOU CAN BUY AND TO SUPPORT DISCOVERY. AND WE ALSO HAVE THE BAND CONCERT THE SAME DAY. SO MAKE SURE TO DROP BY DISCOVERY TO CHECK OUT THE MAKERS MARKET BAND CONCERT AND THE BOOK FAIR TO HELP SUPPORT DHS. ANY QUESTIONS? SOUNDS GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH, GUYS. APPRECIATE IT [APPLAUSE]. AND DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT ONLY TWO WEEKS IN BETWEEN. WE ALWAYS LOVE HEARING FROM YOU GUYS. SO OUR NEXT REPORT IS FROM CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL. HI, MY NAME IS REGAN SHEFFIELD AND I AM THE ASB TREASURER ELECT. HI, I'M ALLEGRA BERMAN, AND I'M THE SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT, THERE'S MAYBE A TYPO ON THE SCREEN. SO AS YOU'VE HEARD STUFF, THE BUS DID JUST END AND WE COLLECTED FOOD DONATIONS AS WELL AS MONEY DONATIONS FOR THE CARROLL FOOD PROGRAM AND THE CHILDREN'S HOME SOCIETY. WE HAD STUDENTS FROM FOOTBALL, NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY, JESUS CLUB AND LEADERSHIP SPEND THEIR TIME COLLECTING FOOD THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY AND AT SAFEWAY. WITH DECA IN FULL SWING, CDC JUST OCCURRED LAST WEEK, AND IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR MARKETING ONE CLASSES TO BE ABLE TO COME AND EXPERIENCE WHAT COMPETITION IS LIKE WITHOUT THE COMPETITIVE FACTOR. LATER THIS WEEK WE HAVE BAND CONCERTS AND CHOIR CONCERTS. IN ADDITION, DECA HAS BEEN SELLING THE COFFEE. SO THIS IS AN ACTIVITY THAT DECA DOES TO NOT ONLY INVOLVE ALL THE STUDENTS, BUT ALSO RAISE MONEY TO OFFSET SOME COMPETITION COSTS. AND JUST TONIGHT WE HAD THE MAGNET SYMPOSIUM, WHERE OUR SENIORS IN THE MAGNET PROGRAM PRESENTED THEIR RESEARCH FINDINGS FROM THEIR RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS THAT HAPPENED OVER THE SUMMER. MOVIE NIGHT IS ALSO THIS FRIDAY AND WE WILL BE PLAYING POLAR EXPRESS. THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME SNACKS, COOKIES, IT'LL BE REALLY FUN. AND AUDITIONS FOR OUR SPRING MUSICAL HADESTOWN JUST HAPPENED. AND I BELIEVE INGA BYMAN WAS CAST AS THE LEAD. MOVING ON TO SPORTS, CURRENTLY, WE HAVE 604 SINGLE SPORT ATHLETES, 291, TWO SPORT ATHLETES, 68, THREE SPORT ATHLETES. SO, AS MANY OF YOU MIGHT KNOW, FOOTBALL TOOK SECOND PLACE IN STATE AT THE HUSKY STADIUM IN SEATTLE. AND WE HAD JAKE DAVIDSON, OUR QUARTERBACK, WIN GATORADE STATE PLAYER OF THE YEAR. COACH MATHIESON IS THE SEAHAWKS COACH OF THE YEAR IN BOTH OF THESE AWARDS, CONSIDERED ALL LEVELS FROM 2B TO 4A. IN ADDITION, UNIFIED BASKETBALL, BOYS SWIM, GIRLS BOWLING, WRESTLING, GYMNASTICS, BASKETBALL, AND DANCE ARE ALL UNDERWAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING. DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION. WHERE DO WE BUY THE COFFEE FROM? I FEEL LIKE IN YEARS PAST WE'VE GOTTEN A LITTLE LINK OR A FLYER OR SOMETHING AND WHERE TO BUY THAT FROM. RIGHT. SO IN ADDITION TO I THINK THAT SHOULD BE HAPPENING, THE STUDENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO KIND OF LIKE, PROMOTE FROM THEMSELVES AND USE MARKETING SKILLS TO SELL TO PEOPLE. YES YOU WILL. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR THEM? ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. ALL RIGHT. I'D LIKE TO INVITE OUR REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL MAGNET PROGRAM TO COME ON UP AND GET SET FOR THEIR PRESENTATIONS. WE GOT A MOMENT ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO BEFORE THE BOARD MEETING TO GO OVER AND AND CHECK OUT MANY OF THESE PRESENTATIONS OVER AT THE GYM. AND NOW WE'RE GOING TO WE'RE GOING TO BRING A COUPLE OF A COUPLE OF HIGHLIGHTS IN. MIC] OH, YEAH. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE COFFEE SALES, BECAUSE I DO BELIEVE THE COFFEE SALES ENDED DECEMBER 6TH UNFORTUNATELY LAST FRIDAY. BUT MY RECOMMENDATION IS EMAIL SUSIE DOWNEY'S. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO ORDER, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET IN. YOU KNOW, IF YOU JUST SEND AN E-MAIL. SORRY, I WAS CHATTING ABOUT THAT. I'LL FORWARD IT TO YOU. OKAY. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. SO AND I'M SORRY IF YOU HAD ANY OPENING REMARKS THAT YOU WANTED TO GIVE BEFOREHAND. I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THAT TOO. IT'S ONE OF THOSE DAYS. I GUESS IT IS. YEAH. SO I'M BRIANNA ABRAHAM. I HELP ORGANIZE AND RUN THE MSC PROGRAM AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL. WE HAVE A WONDERFUL STAFF, BUT A NUMBER OF US COULDN'T BE HERE TODAY BECAUSE OF VARIOUS THINGS. BUT WE HAVE SAM GREEN THAT ALSO HELPS COORDINATE SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE STUFF AND APPLICATIONS AND ADMISSIONS PROCESS. HE TEACHES OUR SOPHOMORE ENGLISH STUDENTS. WE HAVE JEANNIE JARVIS, WHO TEACHES OUR FRESHMAN ENGLISH STUDENTS. [00:15:03] I DON'T KNOW IF SHE'S STILL HERE. JENNIFER ROBERTS TEACHES OUR NINTH GRADE STUDENTS AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE. ALAN BOHAC TEACHES A NUMBER OF OUR STUDENTS IN MATH. AND THEN LEONTINE LIBBY IS OUR COUNSELOR. AND OF COURSE, TOM MORRIS IS OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, THAT HELPS ORGANIZE AND RUN THE PROGRAM AS WELL. SO IF YOU DON'T KNOW HER HISTORY, HAVE BEEN AROUND SINCE 2007 INCEPTION, SO DO THE MATH. I DIDN'T DO THE MATH IN PREPARATION, BUT WE'VE BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME. THIS SENIOR CLASS IS AS AWESOME AS ALWAYS, AND I DO HAVE TO SAY I REALLY THEY CAME IN AWESOME AND THEY'RE LEAVING EVEN AWESOMER. AND HOPEFULLY YOU GOT TO SEE SOME OF THE PRODUCTS, PROJECTS AND PRODUCTS THAT THEY HAVE DONE. THEY RANGE FROM TRAVELING TO CHINA TO DOING STUFF REMOTE FROM CALIFORNIA AND MIT AND DUKE AND ALL OVER THE PLACE, AND THE PROJECTS ARE JUST WAY OVER MY HEAD, AND THE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND IT ALL AND THEY'RE AMAZING. SO YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM TWO, WE HAVE YUNA LEE AND THEN WE HAVE ALEX MCNUTT. AND SO ENJOY. ALL RIGHT. HELLO EVERYBODY. I HOPE YOUR EVENINGS HAVE BEEN GOING GOOD. AGAIN, MY NAME IS YUNA LEE. I'M A SENIOR IN THE MAGNET PROGRAM AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, AND I'M JUST HERE TO TALK ABOUT MY INTERNSHIP THAT I HAD THIS SUMMER, AS WELL AS MY OVERALL MAGNET EXPERIENCE. SO AS AN OVERVIEW, I WENT TO THE OHSU SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY AND PARTICIPATED IN THE SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP, WHICH IS A FORMALIZED TEN WEEK PROGRAM WHERE I WOULD GO TO OHSU FOR FIVE DAYS A WEEK. AND WHAT I WORKED ON WAS PROTEIN PURIFICATION. AND PROTEIN PURIFICATION IS A METHOD OF EXTRACTING AND ISOLATING PROTEINS FROM CELLS, BACTERIA, TISSUE, ETC. AND THIS PROCESS IS VERY TEDIOUS AND VERY EXPENSIVE FOR LABS TO DO. AND SO THE SOLUTION TO THIS IS THE FRANKENBODY. AND THE FRANKENBODY IS A SYNTHETIC PROTEIN THAT COMBINES A MAIN PROTEIN BODY ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS THAT I'LL BE DISCUSSING LATER. AND YEAH, THE PURPOSE IS JUST TO SPEED UP LAB PROCESSES AND REDUCE OVERALL COSTS. AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS IMAGE BELOW IS ACTUALLY THE TRAM ON THE WAY UP TO THE OHSU UPPER CAMPUS. AND YEAH, EVERY SINGLE DAY I'D RIDE THAT. AND I GUESS IT WAS REALLY COOL JUST SEEING LIKE THE TRAM WHICH IS WHERE YOU WHAT YOU SEE FROM THE HIGHWAY AND BEING IN THERE, IT WAS A REALLY COOL EXPERIENCE. ANYWAYS THIS IS A DIAGRAM OF METAL AFFINITY CHROMATOGRAPHY, WHICH IS A PROCESS OF PROTEIN PURIFICATION WHICH USES A METAL FILTER TO MAKE DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS OF PROTEINS THAT HAVE DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF PROTEIN CONCENTRATIONS WITHIN THEM. AND SO YOU'LL SEE THOSE AT THE BOTTOM IN THE LITTLE FLASKS BELOW. AND THE IMAGE IS ME ACTUALLY SETTING UP THE TUBES FOR THE METAL AFFINITY CHROMATOGRAPHY PROCESS. AND THE PINK LIQUID THAT I'M POURING IN IS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE METALS THAT WE USE FOR THE FILTER. AND THIS IMAGE IS SHOWING HOW WE TESTED OUT TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF E COLI STRAINS FOR OUR MAIN PART OF OUR FRANKENBODY, T7S AND BL21. AND THIS IMAGE SHOWS US THAT THE E COLI STRAIN T7S WAS THE BEST FOR PROTEIN PURIFICATION. AND WE CAN SEE IN THE BANDS AT THE 20 MILLIMOLAR AND 150 MILLIMOLAR COLUMNS, WE CAN SEE PRETTY CLEAR BANDS GOING HORIZONTAL AT THE ARROW. AND THIS SHOWS US THAT THERE ARE PROTEIN, PROTEIN THAT'S BEING COLLECTED AND BUILT UP WITHIN THESE AREAS, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHERE WE WANT THEM TO BE. AND YEAH, SO THIS TOLD US THAT THE T7S E COLI WAS BEST FOR THE FRANKENBODY. NOW THAT WE KNOW THAT T7S IS THE BEST PROTEIN FOR OUR FRANKENBODY, WE NEEDED TO ATTACH BIOTIN, WHICH IS ONE OF THE COMPONENTS FOR TO MAKE THE FRANKENBODY FUNCTIONAL. AND AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE IMAGE ON THE LEFT WHICH HAS THE BIOTINYLATED PROTEIN THERE ARE SEVERAL BARS WHICH SHOW THAT THERE ARE PROTEINS BEING BUILT UP WITHIN THIS IMAGE. HOWEVER, ON THE RIGHT SIDE WHICH HAS THE NON BIOTINYLATED PROTEIN, WE SEE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. SO THIS PROVES THAT OUR FRANKENBODY CAN BE CORRECTLY BIOTINYLATED. AND YEAH, THIS WAS ABOUT MY OHSU INTERNSHIP. AND IT WAS A REALLY UNIQUE AND EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE, AND NOW I SEE DENTISTRY AS A CAREER THAT I WANT TO PURSUE IN THE FUTURE. AND, YOU KNOW, YOU ONLY SEE DENTISTRY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A PATIENT. AND SO YOU DON'T REALLY SEE THE FULL NUANCES OF THE CAREER AND HOW MANY SUB PATHS THERE ARE FOR YOU TO TAKE. AND I THINK THROUGH THE MAGNET PROGRAM, IT HELPED PROVIDE ME WITH OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCES LIKE THE OHSU INTERNSHIP. AND I FEEL LIKE I CAN CONFIDENTLY SAY THAT WITHOUT THE HELP OF AN EXPERIENCE THAT I GAINED FROM THE MAGNET PROGRAM, WHETHER THROUGH THE RESEARCH OR PRESENTATION [00:20:05] ASPECT OR EVEN THE ACADEMIC COURSES THAT I TOOK WITH MY FELLOW MAGNET STUDENTS, I WOULDN'T HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY. AND ALSO AT THE INTERNSHIP, I WAS ABLE TO UNDERSTAND A LOT MORE OF THE COMPLEX TOPICS THAT WERE BEING DESCRIBED BECAUSE OF THE MAGNET PROGRAM. AND I WAS ALSO EXPOSED TO PRESENTING THESE TYPES OF ACADEMIC ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROJECTS TO AUDIENCES THROUGH THE MAGNET SYMPOSIUMS, AS WELL AS WASHINGTON STATE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR. AND SO, EVEN AS A HIGH SCHOOLER, I KNEW HOW TO PRESENT MY WORK PROFESSIONALLY AMONG GRADUATE STUDENTS AND EVEN OTHER PROFESSORS. SO YEAH, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. I WANT TO GIVE THANKS TO, YOU KNOW, ALL MY TEACHERS THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL, ESPECIALLY ABE AND MR. GREEN, FOR OFFERING ME THIS OPPORTUNITY TO BE HERE. AND YEAH, I'M ALSO THANKFUL FOR MY OSHU MENTORS, DR. DAVID ANDERSON AND DR. JUSTIN MERRITT. AND YEAH, THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH. DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? YEAH. YEAH. HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN DENTISTRY? WAS IT DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER IN THAT FIELD, OR WAS IT JUST SOMETHING YOU STUMBLED UPON? NO. SO IT WAS THE INTERNSHIP, ALONG WITH, LIKE, THE LAB EXPERIENCE THAT WE GAINED. WE WOULD GO DOWN AND WE WOULD MEET ALL THE INTERNS WOULD MEET TOGETHER EVERY WEDNESDAY, AND WE WOULD JUST TALK ABOUT LIKE NEW ACADEMIC OR NEW, LIKE, DISCOVERIES THAT ARE BEING MADE IN THE DENTISTRY CAREER. AND I FOUND THAT REALLY INTERESTING. I KNEW I WANTED TO PURSUE, LIKE THE MEDICAL FIELD, BUT I THINK THROUGH THIS INTERNSHIP, IT DEFINITELY SHOWED ME THAT DENTISTRY IS WHAT I WANT TO PURSUE. OTHER QUESTIONS? DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR WHERE YOU'RE BOUND IN THE SPRINGTIME AFTER GRADUATION? FOR COLLEGES? YEAH. I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY YET, BUT I'M HOPING FOR JUST A SCHOOL, MAYBE ON THE WEST COAST. I'VE APPLIED TO UW AND A COUPLE OF THE, LIKE, LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES DOWN IN CALIFORNIA, SO. YEAH. OKAY. ALL RIGHT, WELL, THANK YOU. BEST OF LUCK. ANYTHING ELSE? THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. MIC] HI, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS ALEX MCNUTT AND MY PROJECT IS SEEING 3D IN THE DARK WITH STEREO CAMERAS. I WORKED IN THE PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY COMPUTATIONAL IMAGING LAB WITH PROFESSOR [INAUDIBLE] ENGEL. AND HE WAS THERE AS MY MENTOR AND HELPED ME IN THIS PROJECT. SO HUMAN EYES, OF COURSE, TAKE TWO IMAGES, FROM THEY'RE LIKE SHIFTED LENSES, AND THEY PROCESS THESE IMAGES USING A STEREOPSIS IN THE BRAIN. AND JUST LIKE FROM THESE TWO LENSES, THEY CAN CREATE THESE TWO SHIFTED STEREO IMAGE PAIRS. WE CAN EMULATE THIS WITH A CAMERA, LIKE WITH THE CAMERA I WORKED WITH, THE HP INTEL REALSENSE CAMERA, THAT HAS THE SIMILAR TWO LENSES HERE AND AN RGB CAMERA AND AN INFRARED CAMERA. THEN WE TAKE THESE TWO SHIFTED IMAGES, AND WHEN THEY'RE COMPARED, YOU HAVE A LEFT AND A RIGHT IMAGE THAT HAS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SHIFT. AND YOU CAN STORE THESE SHIFT VALUES IN WHAT WE CALL A DISPARITY MAP. AND THEN THESE DISPARITY MAP VALUES ARE THEN USED TO CREATE 3D IMAGES, THE 3D DEPTH MAPS. SO THERE'S SEVERAL METHODS THAT I USED TO CREATE THESE DISPARITY MAPS, THE BASIC ONE BEING BLOCK MATCHING. AND I WAS AIMING TO OPTIMIZE TWO ADVANCED STEREO IMAGE LIKE DEPTH MAP CREATION ALGORITHMS ABOVE THESE LIKE THIS BASIC BLOCK MATCHING ALGORITHM THAT I USED HERE. SO ORIGINALLY I STARTED OFF WITH A RUNTIME OF ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND A MEAN SQUARED ERROR OR QUALITY OF ABOUT 180. BY OPTIMIZING IT THOUGH, USING VECTORIZED COMPUTATION, PARALLELIZING THE HOW THE LOOPS WERE CALCULATED FOR THE DISPARITY MAP, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE RUNTIME DOWN TO 5.8 SECONDS AND TO A MEAN SQUARED ERROR OF 84.3. ONCE I COMPARED THESE TO THE TWO OTHER METHODS, PYRAMID STEREO MATCHING NETWORK AND SEMI-GLOBAL MATCHING, THE SIMPLE BLOCK MATCHING ALGORITHM, EVEN OPTIMIZED IN FULL LIGHT, WAS NOT ESPECIALLY COMPETITIVE. SO I WAS WONDERING, HEY, WHAT IF THIS DISPARITY MAP GENERATION METHOD WAS ACTUALLY BETTER IN LOW LIGHT? SO THAT WAS MY NEXT STEP. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT GETS DARK? SO AT 100 PHOTONS PER PIXEL, I FOUND THAT MY OPTIMIZED BLOCK MATCHING ALGORITHM PERFORMED BETTER THAN SEMI-GLOBAL [00:25:07] MATCHING, AND HAD A RUNTIME THAT WAS FASTER THAN SEMI-GLOBAL MATCHING, AND MOST SIGNIFICANTLY, AT THE LOWEST LIGHT LEVEL THAT I TESTED IT ON AT 10 PHOTONS PER PIXEL, IT HAD THE BEST MEAN SQUARED ERROR, THE HIGHEST THE EXCUSE ME, THE LOWEST MEAN SQUARED ERROR. SO THE HIGHEST QUALITY OUT OF THE THREE METHODS AND WAS FASTER THAN SEMI-GLOBAL MATCHING RIGHT THERE ON THE RIGHT. SO WHY DOES THIS DEPTH IMAGING MATTER? WELL, FOR ONE, SELF-DRIVING CARS HAVE TO USE THIS AT NIGHTTIME. IT'S IMPORTANT FOR MANUFACTURING AND OF COURSE, FOR SECURITY APPLICATIONS. SO THE MAGNET PROGRAM THROUGHOUT MY FOUR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL HAS PLAYED A REALLY IMPORTANT ROLE IN ME DISCOVERING INDEPENDENT RESEARCH. SO, FOR EXAMPLE, SINCE MY SOPHOMORE YEAR, MY PARTNER AND I FOR WORKING ON TESLA TURBINES, WE GOT SENT TO THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR AFTER COMPETING AT THE WASHINGTON STATE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR AND THE REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR. AND THIS WAS REALLY AWESOME FOR US BECAUSE WE GOT TO SPEND A WEEK PRESENTING OUR RESEARCH IN DALLAS, TEXAS, AND IT WAS ALL COVERED BY THIS FAIR. AND WE REALLY JUST GOT A MOMENT TO CONNECT WITH, LIKE OTHER STUDENTS THAT WERE EXTREMELY PASSIONATE IN STEM AND HAD LIKE A WEEK TO OURSELVES TO JUST MEET PROFESSIONALS AND REALLY, LIKE, NETWORK IN A WAY THAT WAS JUST MATURE AND WE WOULDN'T HAVE IF WE GOT TO JUST LIKE, STAY HOME OVER BREAK. IT ALSO REALLY ENLIGHTENED MY CAREER AS WELL INTO ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING BECAUSE AFTER THIS PROJECT IN COMPUTER VISION AND LIKE I WAS TALKING ABOUT MY EARLIER PROJECT IN TESLA TURBINES, I GOT TO FOUND FIND MY PASSION IN POWER GENERATION AND AS WELL AS LIKE USING LIKE, COMPUTER SCIENCE. SO IT REALLY HELPED ME BUILD LIKE EXPERIENCE IN MY CAREER BEFORE EVEN COLLEGE. AND HELPED DIRECT ME TOWARDS THE MAJOR I WANT TO DO NOW AFTER APPLYING IN COLLEGE AND SOLIDIFYING THOSE PLANS. IT ALSO PROVIDED ME A LOT WITH PEOPLE AROUND ME THAT I GOT TO HAVE THROUGH MY FOUR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL THAT WERE JUST LIKE, PUT ME IN A GOOD GROUP OF PEOPLE AND WE'RE REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT I WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT TOO, WHICH WAS SPECIAL. SO THANK YOU ALL FOR LISTENING. DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? I DO, THANK YOU. ALEX. YES. I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHEN YOU SHOWED ME YOUR POSTER, I WAS LIKE, WOW, THERE WAS SO MUCH THERE. IT WAS A LOT. BUT I'M A MOLECULAR BIOLOGIST. THAT'S NOT IT. BUT I DID HAVE A QUESTION THAT I THOUGHT OF SINCE YOU SHOWED IT, DID YOU LOOK AT THE CHALLENGES OF LIKE TEXTURES? I KNOW SOME TEXTURES ARE REALLY DIFFICULT TO DISCERN IN, IN, IN LOW LIGHT. DID YOU LOOK AT THAT AT ALL IN ANY OF THE WORK, LIKE THE IMPACT OF TEXTURES ON THOSE MODELS? IF ONE'S BETTER. YEAH, THAT THAT IS LIKE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT A REALLY IMPORTANT PART IN LOW LIGHT BECAUSE AS IT GETS DARKER, THEN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT EDGES IN LIGHT OF THE OBJECTS GET BLURRED OUT. THAT WAS KIND OF INCORPORATED INTO THE MEAN SQUARED ERROR. I DIDN'T FOCUS ON SPECIFICALLY ATTACKING ISSUES WHERE THERE WASN'T MUCH LIKE DIFFERENCE IN PATTERNS. BUT FROM THE RESULTING DISPARITY MAPS, WE DID COMPARE THOSE TO WHAT WE CALL GROUND TRUTH IMAGES THAT SHOW EXACTLY HOW FAR THINGS ARE IN THE IMAGES TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY VARIATION ACROSS LIKE SMOOTH SURFACES LIKE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. AND WE JUST INCORPORATED THAT INTO THE EVALUATION OF EACH METHOD. EXCELLENT. THANK YOU. YEAH. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU. APPRECIATE IT. YEAH [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR MAGNET STUDENTS AND THE WONDERFUL STAFF AND ADMINISTRATORS THAT SUPPORT THE PROGRAM. THIS IS ALWAYS AN EYE OPENING EVENT THAT WE DO EVERY YEAR. ALL RIGHT. THAT BRINGS US TO OUR NEXT ITEM ON THE AGENDA, WHICH IS BOARD COMMUNICATION. I KNOW IT'S ONLY BEEN A COUPLE OF WEEKS SINCE WE MET LAST TIME, BUT IF YOU'VE BEEN UP TO ANYTHING AND WANT TO SHARE ANY UPDATES, THIS IS NOW THE TIME. SURE. LET'S SEE. HAD A GREAT TIME AT HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS IF ANYONE WENT, IT WAS JUST FULL OF STUDENT MUSIC, THAT WAS SO GREAT. AND I DO HAVE A PICTURE OF COREY PLAYING MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND. IF ANYONE WANTS THAT, I'M NOT GOING TO PUT IT OUT. I WAS GOING TO SEND IT TO THE SUPERINTENDENT, BUT NO, YOU CAN ASK ME PRIVATELY. THERE YOU GO. BUT IT WAS REALLY NICE AT HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS. I DID MEET WITH THE GROUP FROM THE ADULT TRANSITION TRAINING CENTER. THEY HAD THEIR DOG TREAT SALE. THERE WERE A BUNCH OF THE, THE THE STUDENTS THERE AND THEY HAD I HAD A CHANCE TO TALK TO THEM. VERY EDUCATIONAL. I HADN'T MET ANY OF THOSE THAT GROUP BEFORE. SO THAT WAS REALLY SPECIAL. THEY WERE SUPER EXCITED. AND THEN LAST WEEK I DID GET TO ATTEND THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT TEACHER STUDENT ORGANIZATION AT PRUNE HILL. THEY HAD A HOLIDAY FESTIVAL. IT WAS SO FANTASTIC. LIKE I WENT IN THERE NOT KNOWING ANYTHING. THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF KIDS. I DID PINECONES WITH GLUE AND GLITTER, SO I HAD GLITTER ALL ON MY PANTS AND SHOES AND EVERYTHING. IT WAS SO. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. THE STUDENTS WERE GREAT. SOME OF THEM WERE A LITTLE A LITTLE QUIET, BUT IT WAS JUST FANTASTIC. [00:30:04] AND I'LL REITERATE, THIS IS A MASSIVE CONCERTS WEEK. WE'RE GOING TO MISS ONE TONIGHT, WHICH IS A SHAME, BECAUSE LIBERTY'S TONIGHT, CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL IS TOMORROW. VALOR SKYRIDGE THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR WILL BE PLAYING AT THE GROTTO ON WEDNESDAY, AND THEN WE HAVE ODYSSEY AND PRUNE HILL AT THE END OF THE WEEK. SO YEAH, LOTS OF CONCERTS. IF IF YOU CAN'T FIND THEM, GO ON TO THE CAMAS MUSIC BOOSTERS INSTAGRAM. IT'S THE EASIEST PLACE TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING MUSIC RELATED. SO THANK YOU TO THE BOOSTERS. THEY WERE ALSO AT HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS, THAT WAS GREAT TO SEE THEM. SO THAT'S IT FOR ME. I WAS ABLE TO GO, I THINK ALL OF US WERE ON THE SCHOOL VISIT LAST WEEK. WE WENT TO CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL AND GOT TO GO INTO SOME CLASSROOMS AND SEE KIDS LEARNING IN ACTION AND TEACHERS TEACHING, AND IT WAS IT'S ALWAYS GREAT TO BE ABLE TO GET INTO SCHOOLS AND AND SEE, YOU KNOW, WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PUT INTO PLACE AND ALL THE GREAT THINGS GOING ON IN OUR SCHOOLS. ALSO ON SATURDAY, I SIGNED UP, I WENT TO THIS TRAINING CALLED ADVANCING INCLUSION THROUGH BELONGING, THINKING THAT MY PEEPS WERE GOING TO JOIN ME AND NOBODY ELSE SIGNED UP. TURNS OUT I WAS THERE WITH BOARD MEMBERS OF THIS THE ROOTED SCHOOL, WHICH IS A NEW SCHOOL IN VANCOUVER, THEIR BOARD MEMBERS AND ME. BUT IT WAS A GREAT TRAINING. IT WAS A WSSDA ON BOARD TRAINING. AND SO SOME OF OUR SAME WSSDA TRAINERS WE'VE SEEN. SO IT WAS A GREAT INTERACTIVE TRAINING. I'LL SHARE THE STUFF THAT I BROUGHT BACK WITH ME WITH YOU GUYS, BUT I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. IT WAS GREAT. THAT'S IT. QUIET WEEK FOR ME. MOSTLY BEEN OUT OF TOWN, BUT I DID ATTEND A LISTENING SESSION AT LIBERTY. AND ALL OF YOU AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. I LOVE MY TIME LISTENING TO THE TEACHERS AT EVERY SCHOOL THAT I'VE BEEN ABLE TO GO TO. GRATEFUL THAT I HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH THEM ONE ON ONE. THANK YOU. SORRY I MISSED MOST OF THOSE BECAUSE THEY'RE DURING THE WORK DAY, SO I KNOW THOSE, I APPRECIATE THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE ABLE TO ATTEND THOSE THAT ARE DURING THE WORK DAY. HARDER TO GET TIME OFF FOR THOSE, BUT THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL SITE VISIT WAS REALLY GOOD AS WELL. AND WE ALWAYS PICK UP LITTLE NUGGETS OF INFORMATION AS WE'RE WALKING AROUND IN THE IN THE CLASSROOM, SO THAT'S GREAT. I ALSO ATTENDED WELL, I ATTENDED THE FOOTBALL GAME ON SATURDAY. WHAT A CLASSY PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE. IT WAS A FANTASTIC SEASON FOR THOSE BOYS. AND IT WAS A HEARTBREAKER OF A LOSS, BUT IT WAS A IT WAS A GREAT GAME. I'VE ALSO BEEN ATTENDING SOME GIRLS AND BOYS BASKETBALL GAMES. IT'S FUN TO HIT ALL THOSE SPORTING EVENTS ALL THE TIME. SO BEEN DOING THOSE. LAST WEEK I ALSO WENT TO I FORGET TO INVITE YOU GUYS, BUT THE VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE [INAUDIBLE] AND THE CLARK COUNTY DO THEIR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE. DIDN'T YOU GUYS GO TO THAT? I SAW VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD WAS THERE AND EVERGREEN SCHOOL BOARD WAS THERE. IT'S A BIG EVENT AT THE HILTON. BUT THERE WAS PROBABLY A SIX OF OUR REPRESENTATIVES AND LEGISLATORS THERE. AND SO THEY ALSO PUT OUT A FLYER, KIND OF LIKE WHAT WE DO. AND SO THERE'S ALWAYS SOME GOOD TIPS ON SOME OF THESE. EDUCATION IS AT THE VERY BOTTOM. I WAS SAD, YOU KNOW, THEY TALK ABOUT ALL KINDS OF THINGS AT THIS LEGISLATIVE UPDATE AND IT WAS KIND OF AT THE BOTTOM. BUT THERE WAS SOME TALK OF EDUCATION STILL AND A LOT OF TALK OF GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY. YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE A MASSIVE DEFICIT IN AT THE STATE LEVEL ALSO, AND IT'S NOT BECAUSE WE'RE IN A RECESSION. I MEAN, WE HAVE MONEY. THEY JUST SO THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WAYS TO BE MORE EFFICIENT. STEPHANIE MCCLINTOCK, YOU KNOW, SHE'S THE 18TH DISTRICT AND SHE USED TO BE A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER, BUT SHE AND KEVIN WATERS TALK A LOT, OF COURSE, ABOUT CTE AND ENCOURAGING TRADES AND FINDING YOUR PASSION IN HIGH SCHOOL. LOTS OF TALK ALSO ABOUT FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR STUDENTS, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS ANOTHER INTERESTING ONE, AND CHILD CARE AND EARLY LEARNING. SO THERE IS EDUCATION. THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT EDUCATION, SO IT WASN'T SOMETHING THAT WASN'T BROUGHT UP. IT'S JUST A WHOLE A WHOLE WHOLE SLEW OF THINGS TO TO WORK ON THIS YEAR. SO BUT IT WAS GREAT THAT THEY PARTICIPATED IN THAT EVENT. SO AND THAT'S IT FOR ME. GREAT. THANK YOU. JUST I DON'T THINK I HAVE TOO MUCH ELSE TO TO SHARE THAT HASN'T ALREADY BEEN HIT, BUT JUST GOING BACK TO THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL VISIT. WHAT I REALLY APPRECIATED FROM, FROM OUR TOUR IS THAT KAYO WAS NOT NOT SHY ABOUT SHOWING US BOTH CELEBRATIONS AND CHALLENGE AREAS. I APPRECIATE WHEN WE GET TO GO TO A BUILDING AND IT'S NOT A DOG AND PONY SHOW. TAKE US INTO THE CROWDED CLASSROOMS. YOU KNOW, TAKE US INTO A JUST A NORMAL CLASSROOM WHERE WE WALK IN AND, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE THEY'RE JUST DOING SILENT WORK. IT'S NOT NECESSARILY A BIG, YOU KNOW, A BIG PRODUCTION. SO I APPRECIATE THE AUTHENTICITY OF THAT. [00:35:01] AND AND BEING ABLE TO SEE NOT, LIKE I SAID, NOT JUST THE THINGS THAT ARE GOING WELL, BUT ALSO PLACES THAT ARE CHALLENGING, YOU KNOW, SHOW US THE SCIENCE LABS WITH LOTS OF STUDENTS IN THEM, THAT KIND OF STUFF. SO APPRECIATE THAT. HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS AGAIN ESPECIALLY BECAUSE SO MANY OF THEM ARE MY PEEPS. THANK YOU TO THE MUSIC EDUCATORS WHO PUT IN SO MUCH ADDITIONAL TIME. I KNOW FROM THE MINUTE THAT SCHOOL GOT OUT THAT DAY, THEY WERE DOWN THERE HELPING, SETTING UP TENTS AND MOVING EQUIPMENT AROUND, AND ALL THE PARENTS THAT BRING THEIR STUDENTS DOWN THERE TO PERFORM. IT'S SUCH A GREAT IT'S SUCH A GREAT OCCASION AND A GREAT EVENT. AND, AND YEAH, I WAS I SELFISHLY WAS ABLE TO SIT IN WITH ONE OF THE BANDS, ONE OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL BANDS, AND PLAY. IT WAS REALLY IT WAS REALLY FUN. I HAD A GREAT TIME WITH THAT. ALSO JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU A COUPLE OF HEADS UP FROM THE LEGISLATIVE SIDE OF THINGS. AS YOU KNOW, FROM OUR LEGISLATIVE RECEPTION THAT WE HAD BACK IN NOVEMBER, THERE WERE A COUPLE OF REPRESENTATIVES THAT WERE OUR LEGISLATORS THAT WERE NOT ABLE TO MAKE IT STILL REACHING OUT TO THEM. I'M WORKING WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM REP WATERS OFFICE, AND WE HAVE A DATE WE'RE WORKING ON RIGHT AFTER RIGHT AFTER BREAK. I WANT TO SAY JANUARY 8TH OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, WHERE I'M STILL TRYING TO NAIL DOWN EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS IF WE WANT TO MEET OR IF HE WANTS A LITTLE TOUR OF THE BUILDING. SO JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND THAT WE MIGHT. JANUARY 8TH I MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING THERE. SORRY I DIDN'T SHARE THAT WITH YOU EITHER. I JUST I JUST GOT THAT. SO THIS IS ALSO THE TIME TO WHERE LEGISLATORS ARE ABLE TO START PRE-FILING BILLS FOR THE SESSION. SO IF YOU GO TO THE LEDGE.WA.GOV, YOU CAN SEE KEEP AN EYE ON THOSE THINGS. WSSDA WILL START SENDING OUT SOME UPDATES SOON TOO ABOUT ANY BILLS THAT CATCH THEIR ATTENTION THAT YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING FOR. AND THEN SPEAKING OF THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION, WE HAVE OUR ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE THAT'S COMING UP. IT'S IT'S DIFFERENT THIS YEAR. IN PAST YEARS, IT'S BEEN JUST THAT SUNDAY THE 11TH OR THAT SUNDAY FOLLOWED BY DAY ON THE HILL THE NEXT DAY. THEY'RE BREAKING IT UP THIS YEAR. SO THERE'S LIKE AN EVENING SESSION ON SATURDAY, THERE'S A MORNING SESSION ON SUNDAY, AND THEN FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, IT LOOKS LIKE THERE REALLY ISN'T A DAY ON THE HILL. THEY'RE JUST ENCOURAGING US TO TO GO OUT AND DO OUR OWN SCHEDULING OF THINGS. SO THAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING THAT WE TALK ABOUT IN THE THE LAC MEETING THAT'S COMING UP, I THINK, NEXT WEEK. BUT I DO JUST WANT TO SAY FOR THE THE LEDGE CONFERENCE I HAVE A CONFLICT ON THAT. IF THERE'S ANYBODY THAT'S ABLE TO ATTEND. I KNOW GAIL JUST SENT AN EMAIL OUT ABOUT THAT. I CAN DO SUNDAY. I JUST I CAN'T DO SATURDAY. BUT IF YOU KNOW, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER NOW, BUT JUST TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR CALENDAR AND GET BACK TO ME, LET ME KNOW IF THERE'S SOMETHING. IT'D BE GOOD TO HAVE REPRESENTATION THERE AT IT. SO YEAH. THAT'S IT. IS IT ONLY IN PERSON? THAT'S THE THING IS, IT'S ALL, IT'S ALL IN, THAT'S THAT'S WHY IT'S THROWING ME OFF. BECAUSE THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, IT'S BEEN VIRTUAL, TOO. AND IT SEEMS LIKE WHAT WE'VE WHAT WE'VE SEEN IS IT'S ONLY IN PERSON THIS YEAR. SO IF IT COMES DOWN TO IT AND I CAN ONLY DO SUNDAY, I CAN GO UP ON I CAN GO UP ON SUNDAY, BUT SATURDAY JUST MAY BE OUT FOR ME. SO IT'S LIKE A 4 TO 8 ON SATURDAY AND THEN LIKE 8 TO NOON ON SUNDAY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. SO ANYTHING ELSE? OKAY, GREAT. [3. SYSTEMS/PATHWAYS] THAT'S GOING TO MOVE US INTO OUR SECTION OF REPORTS. WE JUST HAVE ONE REPORT TONIGHT, AND THAT'S FROM DR. ANZALONE AND HIS SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. ALL RIGHT. THANKS, COREY. AND THANKS, EVERYONE FOR SPENDING THAT TIME AT CHS. I KNOW THAT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY FOR YOU, BUT HOPEFULLY YOU ENJOYED IT. AND I AGREE COREY, THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY, ALL THE ALL THE IN BETWEEN. SO IT WAS GOOD. GOOD VISIT. SO WE JUST MET OBVIOUSLY A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO. SO IT'S A LITTLE TRUNCATED REPORT. BUT, SO I DON'T HAVE ENROLLMENT NUMBERS FOR YOU. ENROLLMENT WILL COME OUT NEXT WEEK, SO I'LL MAKE SURE I HAVE THAT REPORT NEXT MONTH. THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME I THINK WE'RE TOGETHER BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS. SO LOTS OF GOOD CELEBRATIONS. SOME OF YOU MENTIONED IT ALREADY. DEFINITELY WANT TO RECOGNIZE ALL THE KIDS AND ALL THE STAFF WHO PUT THIS NOT ONLY STUFF THE BUS, BUT WALK AND KNOCK TOGETHER. WE SPOKE ABOUT THIS AARON HANSEN AND I SPOKE ABOUT THIS AT ROTARY AND MADE SURE WE HAD THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT. SO REALLY SOME GOOD PICS THERE FROM FROM THAT EVENT. AGAIN, WHAT ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVED IS IT WAS RIGHT AFTER THE FOOTBALL GAME THE NEXT SUNDAY. I SAID THAT LAST MONTH, JUST THE DEDICATION OF THE STUDENTS ESPECIALLY. AND HAYES FREEDOM IS STILL LOCKED AND LOADED WITH WALK AND KNOCK, SO I APPRECIATE THEM HOLDING STRONG. WE'VE BEEN TALKING WITH THE SUPERINTENDENTS, HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT FINDING A WAY TO MAYBE SEPARATE THESE EVENTS A LITTLE BIT SO THAT WAY WE CAN DEDICATE TO BOTH. AND THERE'S THE OVERLAP. AND SO WE'RE TRYING TO FIGURE THAT OUT. BUT IN THE MEANTIME WE DO HAVE BOTH OF THESE EVENTS. SO GREAT CELEBRATION FOR THE COMMUNITY. AND AND AS YOU MENTIONED HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS WAS REALLY SPECIAL. I LOVE THE FAKE SNOW. WE DIDN'T HAVE THE REAL STUFF THIS YEAR. SO FAKE SNOW OVER THERE AT LIBERTY. BUT JUST THE AGAIN, THE TOGETHERNESS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE KIDS OVER AT PRUNE HILL, THE PICTURE ON THE LEFT IS VOCAL CHOIR AND ALSO THE RECORDER CHOIR. [00:40:03] SO ALL OF THE SCREECHING THAT MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN, I MEAN, NOT THE SCREECHING, THE PLAYING THAT SHE'S BEEN DOING PAID OFF. THE KIDS REALLY DID. THEY SOUNDED AMAZING. AND SHOUT OUT TO THE TEACHER, THE MUSIC TEACHERS WHO JUST KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK WITH THE KIDS. THAT'S A THAT'S A TOUGH JOB TO DO. SO KUDOS TO YOU. AND THEN CHRISTMAS VACATION PLAYING AT LIBERTY THEATER. PRETTY PRETTY GOOD WAY TO END THE NIGHT. SO AGAIN, GREAT, GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO BE OUT THERE WITH THE COMMUNITY. AS I SAID, AARON AND I HAD THE PLEASURE OF SPEAKING TO ROTARY. WE SHARED STATE OF THE SCHOOLS, VERY SIMILAR PRESENTATIONS. WE WE REALLY PIGGYBACKED OFF ONE ANOTHER, SHARING SOME OF THE BUDGET CONCERNS AND, AND ALSO SOME OF THE GREAT CELEBRATIONS THAT WE HAVE. AND I DO WANT TO SHOUT OUT TO ROTARY EACH EACH DISTRICT RECEIVED A $1,000 DONATION TO THE PRINCIPAL'S CHECKBOOK, WHICH IS IS A GREAT A GREAT WAY TO HELP THE COMMUNITY. SO EACH EACH OF US RECEIVED $1,000. I SAID, YOU KNOW, WE'RE A LITTLE LARGER. WE SHOULD PROBABLY GET $1,500, BUT THAT DIDN'T GO OVER WELL. AND YOU CAN SEE WE SHARED WITH THE ROTARIANS HAD SOME AMAZING QUESTIONS WHEN IT CAME TO THE BUDGET AND JUST WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT. THEY'RE VERY, VERY ENGAGED AND WE APPRECIATE THAT. WE'LL BE SPEAKING AT THE CHAMBER IN JANUARY AGAIN, SO SIMILAR PRESENTATION MAYBE WITH SOME UPDATES. BUT WE HAVE A GREAT PARTNER OVER THERE IN WASHOUGAL. AND AND WE DEFINITELY ARE, YOU KNOW, COMMISERATING WITH THEM. THEY'RE GOING THROUGH SOME TOUGH TIMES AS WELL. SO HANG IN THERE. SOME ARTICLES THAT WE SHARED WITH THE ROTARIANS, WE PUT A BUNCH OF HEADLINES UP JUST TO REALLY REITERATE WHAT THE ROTARIANS, WHAT THE COMMUNITY THAT THIS IS A STATEWIDE ISSUE, BUT WE'RE ALSO SHARING A LOT OF THE SAME BUDGET WOES AS WASHOUGAL, BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN GETTING A LITTLE BIT MORE PRESS ON THAT. AND JUST BECAUSE OF THE FINANCIAL HEALTH SCORE. AND ALSO, YOU KNOW, THE THE TACTICS THAT THEY'VE HAD TO TAKE IN ORDER TO MAKE ENDS MEET. BUT YOU CAN SEE THERE THAT THE ROTARIANS REALLY HONED IN ON THIS AND REALLY WEREN'T AS AWARE AS I THOUGHT THEY WERE ABOUT THIS STATEWIDE ISSUE. AND SO IT WAS GOOD TO BRING THAT TO THEIR ATTENTION. AND AGAIN, WE DIDN'T HAVE A TON OF TIME FOR QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. SO THEY ASKED AARON AND I AT THE END IF WE CAN COME BACK IN JANUARY AND JUST DO REALLY A Q&A SESSION WITH THEM. SO GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO TO BRING THE COMMUNITY UP TO SPEED ON SOME THINGS. OUR BUDGET PLAN IS STILL IN PROCESS. WE WILL ASK THE BOARD TONIGHT, AS YOU KNOW, FOR A SECOND READING AND A POTENTIAL ADOPTION OF OUR END FUND BALANCE POLICY AND THEN OUR 10 TO 12% BUDGET REDUCTIONS TO TRY TO BALANCE THE SCALE, SO TO SPEAK. WE DID PUBLISH OUR COMMUNITY SURVEY THEMES AND ALSO AN FAQ, SO PEOPLE CAN KIND OF SEE THOSE RESULTS OF THAT COMMUNITY SURVEY. AND NOW WE SHIFT INTO THAT SECOND PHASE OF OUR REDUCTIONS, WHICH IS PUTTING SOME OF THAT WORK IN PROGRESS AND PUTTING SOME OPTIONS TOGETHER TO PRESENT TO THE BOARD SOON. AND SO AGAIN, NOT THE MOST FUN PART OF THE JOB, BUT DEFINITELY IMPORTANT AND MAKING SURE THAT OUR DISTRICT IS SUSTAINABLE FOR THE NEAR FUTURE AND BEYOND. PHASE TWO AGAIN, JUST AS A REMINDER, THAT'S WHERE WE START TO PUT OPTIONS TOGETHER. A STAFFING MODEL THAT WILL HELP SUSTAIN US OVER TIME. WE WOULD LIKE TO GET THESE BUDGET DECISIONS TO YOU BY MARCH 1ST, BUT MOST LIKELY SOONER THAN THAT. AND AGAIN, WE WILL ADJUST DOWN THE ROAD AS THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION CLOSES AND WE GO THROUGH OUR NEGOTIATION PROCESS WITH SOME OF OUR BARGAINING GROUPS IN THE SPRING. SO REALLY RIGHT ON TRACK AS FAR AS TIMELINE GOES AND MOVING MOVING FORWARD WITH THE OVERALL TIMELINE. SO QUESTIONS OR THOUGHTS ON ANY OF THAT BUDGET RELATED? OKAY. AGAIN, UPCOMING TIMELINE. I'M JUST KIND OF GIVING YOU THESE IN CHUNKS AS WE MOVE FORWARD. SO WE DON'T WANT TO, YOU KNOW, WE DON'T WANT TO GO TOO FAR AHEAD OF OURSELVES. BUT DECEMBER 5TH, WE WE NOTIFIED THE THE STAFF AND THE COMMUNITY OF OUR SECOND ROUND, WHICH IS A RATHER SMALL OPTION. AND IT REALLY INCLUDED THE COPY CENTER AND A COUPLE OTHER BUDGET REDUCTIONS. THE END FUND BALANCE PERCENTAGE AND TIMETABLE APPROVAL TONIGHT, AS YOU KNOW. AND THEN I'VE ASKED THE CABINET TO BRING FORTH TO ME ON DECEMBER BY DECEMBER 18TH, WHICH IS COMING UP QUICK. THEIR BUDGET REDUCTION PROPOSAL. SO EACH CABINET MEMBER WHO OVERSEES A DEPARTMENT OR A DIVISION OR SCHOOLS WILL BRING FORWARD THOSE OPTIONS AND THEN WE'LL LOOK OVER THOSE OVER WINTER BREAK. AND THEN ONCE WE COME BACK FROM FROM THE BREAK, WE'LL START TO PUT THOSE PACKAGES TOGETHER FOR YOU. WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS THAT WE'LL PUT EVERYTHING PRETTY MUCH AGAINST THE WALL. WE'LL SEE KIND OF WHAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE TO GET TO THAT 10 TO 12% AND THEN POKE HOLES IN IT AND REALLY A LOT OF PUSHBACK AND SAY, OKAY, IF WE DO THIS, THEN THIS. [00:45:03] IF WE DON'T DO THIS, THEN THAT, AND WE'LL BE VERY OPEN WITH THE COMMUNITY AS FAR AS WHAT WAS RECOMMENDED, WHAT'S NOT RECOMMENDED, WHERE WE THINK WE'RE GOING TO GO. SO REALLY ALL THROUGH THE PROCESS AND WE'RE HOPING TO BRING EVERYBODY ALONG. AND HOPEFULLY YOU FELT THAT WE'VE BEEN RATHER TRANSPARENT UP TO THIS POINT. PRINCIPALS COUNCIL, THAT'S WHERE MYSELF AND ONCE IN A WHILE WE'LL HAVE OTHER CABINET MEMBERS, DEPENDING ON THE TOPIC, WE'LL MEET WITH OUR PRINCIPALS. BUT REALLY, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR PRINCIPALS ARE FEELING SUPPORTED. THEREFORE, THEY CAN THEN SUPPORT THEIR STAFFS AT THEIR SCHOOLS. AND WHAT I MEAN BY SUPPORT IS, AS WE TALK THROUGH SOME OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT OUR PRINCIPALS ARE MAKING, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT, OKAY, SO IF THIS STAFF POSITION OR IF THIS PROGRAM OR IF THIS PROJECT IS REDUCED, THEN HOW DO WE SUPPORT YOU IN THE FUTURE? BECAUSE ANYTIME YOU'RE GOING TO GO FORWARD WITH EITHER LESS STAFF OR LESS RESOURCES, WE DON'T WANT TO JUST LEAVE OUR SCHOOLS IN THE IN THE IN THE WIND. SO CONSTANT CONVERSATIONS ABOUT LIKE THE COPY CENTER WAS A GREAT EXAMPLE. A LOT OF QUESTIONS ON OKAY, WELL HOW WHAT WHEN, WHERE, WHY DOES DO WE GET OUR COPIES AND OUR PROJECTS AND THINGS. AND SO WE'RE WORKING CLOSELY WITH ESD 112, AS YOU KNOW. BUT DIRECTIONS INSTRUCTIONS COMING FROM OUR PRINCIPALS TO THE STAFF IS REALLY IMPORTANT. THAT'S JUST ONE EXAMPLE. BUT THAT'S WHAT I MEAN BY SUPPORT. AND THEN WE'LL ALSO MEET WITH OUR CAP EXECUTIVE BOARD, WHICH IS REALLY CLINT WILLIAMS, AMY HOLMES AND ANY OTHER STAFF THAT THEY WANT TO BRING FORWARD TO START TO TALK ABOUT A POTENTIAL REDUCTION IN FORCE AND WHAT THAT COULD LOOK LIKE. I KNOW HR HAS BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD AND REALLY CLOSELY WITH CEA AND OTHER BARGAINING LEADERS TO DEVELOP A SENIORITY LIST IF AND WHEN WE HAVE TO GO DOWN THAT PATHWAY. SO AGAIN, I THINK THE TIMELINE IS IS PRETTY WELL IN PLACE. JANUARY 22ND WE WILL START CEA NEGOTIATIONS. SO THAT WILL IT'LL BE GOOD TO GET SOME OF THAT CONVERSATION GOING WITH CEA AND REALLY KIND OF SEE WHERE THEY'RE AT, WHERE WE'RE AT AND HOW THAT'S GOING TO IMPACT THIS, THIS BUDGET REDUCTION PROCESS. AND THEN I WILL MOST LIKELY UNLESS SOMETHING CHANGES, BUT MOST LIKELY ASK THE BOARD ON OUR JANUARY MEETING FOR A RIFT RESOLUTION. SO THAT WAY WE CAN BEGIN MOVING FORWARD WITH THAT PROCESS LEGALLY AND EXPEDITIOUSLY THROUGH THE SPRING. SO QUESTIONS ON THAT TIMELINE? AND NEXT MONTH I'LL GIVE YOU THE JANUARY. FEBRUARY. JUST YEAH, JUST NOT REALLY A QUESTION BUT JUST A CLARIFICATION. SO ON THAT JANUARY 27TH, THE RIFT RESOLUTION THAT'S NOT ACTUALLY THAT'S NOT ACTUALLY APPROVING OR NOT A SPECIFIC PLAN. THAT'S BASICALLY JUST A RESOLUTION SAYING WE FORESEE RIFTS BEING NEEDED. CORRECT. IT'S REALLY JUST THE GREEN LIGHT, SO TO SPEAK, FROM THE BOARD. AND JUST KEEP IN MIND TOO, IS THAT IT'S NOT JUST TEACHING STAFF THAT'S ANYBODY WITH A WITH WITH A TEACHING LICENSE OR A CERTIFICATION. SO THAT WOULD INCLUDE ANYONE FROM SUPERINTENDENT CABINET MEMBERS. OTHER. BLESS YOU CONNIE. ANY OTHER ZACK STAFF AND THEN ANY ANYBODY IN OUR BUILDING. SO THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WE NEED TO DO THIS KIND OF EARLY, BECAUSE THERE WILL MOST LIKELY BE SOME REDUCTIONS OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM, OF COURSE. AND MANY OF THOSE PEOPLE ARE CERTIFIED, SO. OKAY. AGAIN, AS WE GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS, WE'RE TRYING TO KEEP IN MIND OUR PRINCIPLES. OF COURSE, NUMBER ONE, FIRST AND FOREMOST IS THE MINIMIZATION OF STUDENT IMPACT. AND OBVIOUSLY THAT'S ALWAYS DIFFICULT TO DO. THERE'S EVEN IF IT'S NOT A DIRECT REDUCTION TO A STUDENT'S EXPERIENCE, THERE'S SOME SORT OF INDIRECT IMPACT. AND SO THAT'S ALWAYS THE TOP OF THE LIST WHEN WE GO THROUGH THESE TYPE OF PROCESSES. ALIGNING TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS. DECISION MAKING THAT'S COLLABORATIVE. AND YOU CAN READ DOWN THE LIST, BUT I JUST WANT TO REMIND YOU OF THOSE THAT WE'RE TRYING TO STICK THROUGH TOO AS WE GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS. AND AGAIN, THE LAST LINE I THINK IS REALLY CRITICAL. IT'S THAT PLAN FOR SUSTAINABILITY. IT'S ALWAYS TOUGH WHEN YOU GO THROUGH THESE AT THE FRONT END. OUR HOPE IS THAT AT THE BACK END AND THIS COULD BE YEARS DOWN THE ROAD THAT THAT WE LOOK BACK AND GO, THAT WAS TOUGH. BUT IT WAS THE RIGHT, IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO IS TO GET TO A SUSTAINABLE PATHWAY. SO I JUST WANT TO REMIND YOU OF THAT. GAIL, WOULD YOU MIND CLICKING ON THE LISTENING POST? SO I THINK WHO WAS IT THAT MENTIONED THE LISTENING POST EARLIER? BAMINI, THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING THAT. SO WE'VE REALLY ENJOYED IT. THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COME ON BOARD MEMBERS, ALSO CABINET MEMBERS TO EACH SCHOOL, WE HAVE ONE. ONE MORE TO GO. WE HAVE ODYSSEY ON WEDNESDAY, BUT REALLY JUST BEING ABLE TO POST UP IN LOUNGES OR WHEREVER THE PRINCIPAL WANTS US TO BE. HAVING CONVERSATIONS, ANSWERING QUESTIONS, REALLY COMMISERATING WITH PEOPLE AROUND SOME OF THESE TOUGH CONVERSATIONS, BUT ALSO HEARING SOME WONDERFUL IDEAS AND CELEBRATIONS THAT [00:50:03] ARE HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOLS. AND SO, AS YOU CAN SEE, WE'VE GONE TO ALMOST EVERY SCHOOL EXCEPT ODYSSEY. AND I JUST WANTED TO KIND OF UPDATE YOU ON THE SCHEDULE. SO WHAT I'M GOING TO DO IS AFTER WEDNESDAY'S MEETING, I'LL GET WITH DOREEN AND THE REST OF THE TEAM TO COLLECT A LOT OF THOSE NOTES AND FEEDBACK, AND THEN WE'LL THEME THOSE OUT AND GET THAT OUT TO THE STAFF. BUT I THINK JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, AND THIS IS SOME SOME GOOD IDEAS THAT WERE BROUGHT TO US BY SOME OF THE TEACHERS WE MET WITH, WAS MAKING SURE THAT THAT FEEDBACK IS SITE SPECIFIC TOO. SO HERE'S WHAT WE HEARD FROM WOODBURNER, HERE'S WHAT WE HEARD FROM HAYES OR WHEREVER. THAT WAY YOU CAN FEEL THAT THAT CONNECTION TO YOUR SCHOOL AND THEN THE OVERARCHING THEMES. BUT AGAIN, UNBELIEVABLE CONVERSATIONS, INCREDIBLE IDEAS, A LOT OF LAUGHS TOO AND AROUND SOME GOOD HOMEMADE COOKIES TOO. SO I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY WANTED TO COMMENT ON THAT, BUT MATTHEW? THE COOKIES? NO, I ATE TOO MANY AT THE LAST ONE AT PRUNE HILL BECAUSE WE WERE TALKING ABOUT TAYLOR SWIFT. YEAH, YEAH, I REMEMBER THAT WAS NOTICEABLE. NO, I WANT TO THANK THE EDUCATORS THAT WELCOMED ME THERE THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO A LOT OF THOSE LISTENING POSTS, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OUT OF WORK TO DO THAT, BUT I WANTED TO HEAR IT FIRSTHAND FROM THEM, SO I, I APPRECIATE IT. I WISH I HAD MORE CHANCES, I WISH I COULD HIT MOST OF THEM, BUT IT WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MORE VALUABLE THINGS BECAUSE I AGAIN, IT WAS ALL OVER THE BOARD. EVERY, EVERY SCHOOL WAS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. I GOT INVITED TO A LOT OF THINGS, WHICH WAS NICE, INCLUDING A DIRECT INVITATION TO HELP WITH SOME TRACK MEETS LATER IN THE YEAR. SO YEAH, I THOUGHT IT WAS EXTREMELY VALUABLE. I APPRECIATE THE HONESTY FROM EVERYONE. IT WAS, I THINK IN SOME CASES IT WAS TOUGH, BUT WE HEARD EVERYTHING FROM PLAYGROUND AND, YOU KNOW WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT, THE SAFETY CROSSING GUARDS TO THE EDUCATORS TO, IT WAS JUST NICE TO HEAR FROM JUST ABOUT EVERYBODY. SO IT ALMOST FELT LIKE SOMETIMES WE HAD TO CUT IT SHORT BECAUSE WE WERE THERE FOR TWO HOURS, I THINK, AT BRUNEL. YEAH, IT WAS LONG. IT WASN'T THAT LONG. IT WENT BY VERY QUICKLY. YEAH, YEAH. NO THANKS. MATT. AND I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS I GAINED FROM THAT WAS A LOT OF LIKE NON-TANGIBLE THINGS THAT THAT WE HAVEN'T BEEN LOOKING AT, YOU KNOW, LITTLE REDUCTIONS THAT WE COULD POSSIBLY MAKE TO MAKE AN IMPACT THAT DON'T NECESSARILY IMPACT OUR PEOPLE, OUR EMPLOYEES. SO AGAIN, GREAT, GREAT CONVERSATION. I THINK THERE WERE THERE WAS A LOT OF CONVERSATION ABOUT PEOPLE WHO DON'T GET ELEVATED FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS SOMETIMES. AND SOME PARAS, WE'D HEAR FROM SOME OF THE EDUCATORS LIKE, OH, THESE, THESE FOLKS ARE REALLY CRITICAL TO THE SUCCESS OF, SAY, A WHOLE GRADE LEVEL. AND IT WAS NICE TO HEAR THAT. SO STORIES THAT MAYBE WOULDN'T COME OUT NORMALLY, I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY VALUABLE TO HEAR. GOOD. THANKS AGAIN. WHERE ARE WE PUTTING THAT INFORMATION? SO THE LAST THE LAST SESSION IS WEDNESDAY. AND THEN IT'LL TAKE US JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS TO GET THAT OUT. SO I DON'T WANT TO I DON'T WANT TO PUT ANYBODY'S BACK AGAINST THE WALL THERE. BUT MAYBE RIGHT AFTER THE BREAK. OR DO YOU THINK WE CAN MAYBE GET IT OUT BEFORE? I THINK WE CAN DO IT BEFORE THE BREAK? OKAY. SOUNDS GOOD. I KNOW COREY WAS SPEAKING ABOUT THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES. JUST A REMINDER, WE DO HAVE AN LAC MEETING ON MONDAY. DEREK WILL BE LEADING THAT MEETING, AND WE'LL BE WORKING THROUGH WITH THE COMMITTEE THE HOW TO TALK WITH LEGISLATORS, THE WHAT TO SAY, THE BEST AND MOST DYNAMIC CONTACT POINTS. AND DEREK WILL GO THROUGH KIND OF THE BILL DRAFT SYSTEM. SO I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE REALLY VALUABLE. WE ARE TRYING TO WORK WITH MONICA STONIER'S OFFICE TO SEE IF SHE WILL BE A GUEST SPEAKER. SHE DID LAST YEAR, AND SO WE'RE HOPING TO GET MONICA AGAIN. BUT WE DO HAVE A PRETTY, PRETTY HEAVY AGENDA WITH OR WITHOUT REPRESENTATIVE STONIER, SO WE'LL SEE HOW THAT GOES. SO AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THAT. AND THESE ARE OUR PRIORITIES JUST AS A REMINDER TO THE COMMUNITY OF REALLY WHAT WE'RE WE'RE LOOKING TO DO AND WORK WITH OUR LEGISLATORS ON IS, OF COURSE. ONE OF THE BIG THREE SPECIAL EDUCATION FUNDING, AND I APPRECIATE OUR BOARD RECOGNIZING THAT AND MAKING IT THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. UPDATING OUR PROTOTYPICAL MODEL, THAT IS, OF COURSE, VERY KEY. IT'S NOT TECHNICALLY ONE OF THE BIG THREE, BUT IT'S THE OVERARCHING ISSUE. RIGHT. AND SO AGAIN, OUR BOARD MADE THAT THE NUMBER TWO PRIORITY. REGIONALIZATION FUNDING. AGAIN, NOT ONE OF THE BIG THREE JUST BECAUSE IT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE OF A LOCAL ISSUE. BUT WE'RE STARTING TO SEE THAT THIS IS A REALLY, REALLY IMPACTFUL ISSUE. AND I THINK THE LEGISLATORS NEED TO SEE THE, THE, THE REAL NEGATIVE IMPACT THAT IT'S HAD ON CAMAS AND SOME OF THE CHANGES THAT HAS MADE. SO THAT'S NUMBER THREE. ONE OF THE BIG THREE IS THE MSOC OR MATERIAL SUPPLIES AND OPERATING COSTS, AND MAKING SURE THAT WHEN THOSE FUNDS ARE SENT TO US, THOSE ARE THE MOST FLEXIBLE FUNDS WE HAVE. SO WE APPRECIATE EVERY DOLLAR PER STUDENT THAT'S ADDED. REMEMBER $43 PER STUDENT LAST SESSION. WE'RE HOPING ON DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THAT THIS YEAR, BUT WE'LL SEE. AND THEN ANOTHER MORE OFF OFF OF THE BIG THREE. [00:55:01] BUT VERY IMPORTANT TO US IS FULLY FUNDING TK. WE WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO EXPAND THAT PROGRAM. WE'RE SEEING A TON OF ROI WITH THE KIDS. AS YOU REMEMBER, WE HAD SOME INCREDIBLE TESTIMONIALS AT OUR LAST AS OUR LEGISLATIVE RECEPTION. IT'S JUST I KNOW RIGHT NOW TK IS IN JEOPARDY. THERE'S A LOT OF POLITICS BEHIND THAT ONE. BUT AGAIN, I KNOW NOT JUST MISS WOLFE, OUR TEACHER AT GRASS VALLEY, BUT OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY IS APPRECIATIVE OF THE BOARD TO MAKING THAT IN OUR TOP FIVE. AND AGAIN, THOSE OF YOU OUT THERE LISTENING THAT WANT TO GET INVOLVED, PLEASE REACH OUT. YOU CAN REACH OUT TO MYSELF OR GAIL OR ANY OF THE BOARD MEMBERS. WE CAN CONNECT YOU WITH OUR LEGISLATORS. I KNOW THEY LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. IT'S REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT THAT OUR COMMUNITY GETS INVOLVED LEGISLATIVELY, NOT JUST THE SMALL GROUP THAT WE HAVE AT THE LAC, BUT THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. THIS IS A SLIDE THAT I KEEP BRINGING BACK BECAUSE THIS IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. WE'VE BEEN SHARING IT WITH OUR LEGISLATORS. I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY EYE OPENING TO SHARE WITH REPRESENTATIVE WELL NOW SENATOR ELECT HARRIS, AND THE BIG THE BIG PIE RIGHT. AND WE SEE THAT AS THE THE BUDGET IS GROWING IN WASHINGTON, LESS AND LESS IS GOING TO EDUCATION. SO I JUST WANT TO ALWAYS PUT THAT UP THERE AS A REMINDER IS THAT'S REALLY THAT'S REALLY THE NORTH STAR RIGHT THERE IS TO INCREASE THE SIZE OF THE FUNDING THAT GOES TO EDUCATION STATEWIDE. YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE JUST IN A FIVE YEAR PERIOD. IT'S PRETTY EYE OPENING. AND THEN THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SLIDE THAT I BRING UP OVER AND OVER AGAIN IS JUST UNDERSTANDING HOW MUCH OF OUR EXPENSES ARE GOING ARE COMING FROM THE LEVY. SO MANY EXPENSES THAT WERE NOT ORIGINALLY MEANT TO COME FROM A LEVY, NEARLY $26 MILLION OF OUR EXPENDITURES COME FROM THAT LEVY, AND IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL IF ONE DAY WE CAN REALLY PUT THE LEVY DOLLARS EXACTLY WHERE THEY ARE MEANT TO BE. SO I TRY TO SHARE THIS WITH LEGISLATORS AS MUCH AS I CAN. I THINK THIS IS A VERY TELLING UTILIZATION GRAPH. ALL RIGHT. JUST MOVING ON TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN WORK. THE WORK IS CONTINUING AROUND THESE THREE GOALS, OF COURSE, HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION, A CULTURE OF SAFETY AND BELONGING, AND RESPONSIVE PATHWAYS, WITH THE EYE ON THE PRIZE BEING OUR PROFILE OF A GRADUATE. THE WORK GROUPS ARE MEETING CONSISTENTLY. WE AS YOU KNOW WE CAN ACCESS THAT THROUGH ABOUT CSD AND THEN THE STRATEGIC PLAN, THE DIGITAL VERSION. AND THEN YOU CAN GO TO THE COMMUNITY CORNER. I THINK THE WORK GROUPS HAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD ABOUT UPDATING THIS. I THINK THE LAST ONE IS NOVEMBER. WE SHOULD HAVE ANOTHER ONE UP THERE REALLY SOON. BUT IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN SEEING HOW THOSE WORKGROUPS ARE MOVING ALONG, THE WORK THEY'RE DOING AND THEN MOST IMPORTANTLY, NEXT STEPS. THAT'S A GREAT PLACE TO GO. AND JUST A REALLY, REALLY QUICK UPDATE HERE. SO I LEAD THE CO-LEAD MEETING. SO ALL THE CO-LEADS FROM EACH WORKGROUP WE MEET ONCE A MONTH. AND THIS IS THIS IS THE WORK FROM EACH OF THE WORKGROUPS. IT'S A QUICK QUICK UPDATE. SO YOU SEE SAFETY, THEY'RE WORKING ON SOME FEATURES WITH CRISIS GO RIGHT NOW. OUR SEL WORKGROUP IS EXPLORING STAFF AND CAREGIVER WELLNESS AND SOME SEL INITIATIVES. OUR CURRICULUM AND PD WORKGROUP IS USING AN ARTICLE AROUND THE STATE OF THE FIELD AND THE REFLECTING ON THOSE IMPLICATIONS. OUR PROFILE OF A GRADUATE WORKSHOP OR WORKGROUP IS ENGAGED IN MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE VALUE OF THE PROFILE. WHAT WE'VE REALIZED IS THAT EVERY SINGLE WORKGROUP KIND OF HAS A TENTACLE TO THE PROFILE OF A GRAD, RIGHT? AND WE'RE TRYING TO REMEMBER THAT IT ALL GOES TO THAT NORTH STAR. SBL, OUR WORKGROUP IS CLARIFYING THE GUIDING TEAM'S ROLE. WE'VE ALSO ADDED IN QUOTE UNQUOTE OPEN CHAIR, WHICH IS ABLE YOU'RE ABLE TO VISIT THAT WORKGROUP AND BE A PART OF IT AS AN OPEN CHAIR AND CONTRIBUTE. AND THAT'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE THERE EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY MEET. AND JUST SO IT'S OTHER PEOPLE CAN COME IN AND AND BE A PART OF IT. YEAH, I BELIEVE SO. RIGHTLY SO. IS THAT OPEN CHAIR OR IS JUST FOR ONE? AND THEN WE'LL, WE'RE ALSO GOING TO SOME OF US ARE GOING TO BE MEETING WITH A GROUP OF TEACHERS WHO HAVE REACHED OUT, AND I KNOW THE BOARD WAS COPIED ON THAT TO GET SOME CLARIFICATION ON WHERE THEY WANT TO SEE SOME OF THAT WORK GOING AND MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE HITTING THE MARK. AND IF WE AREN'T, THEN MAKING SURE WE'RE KIND OF CHANGING COURSE. SO WE'RE DEFINITELY OPEN TO ANY ANYBODY WHO REACHES OUT AND SAYS, HEY, WE REALLY HAVE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT WHERE THIS WORK'S GOING. SO THE SBL WORKGROUP CONTINUES TO BE THAT HOT TOPIC. AND THEN MTSS WORKGROUP, THEY'RE REVIEWING SURVEY RESULTS AND DEVELOPING ALIGNMENT GUIDELINES. SO JUST A QUICK UPDATE FOR YOU. I KNOW SOMEONE MENTIONED IT. I JUST WANT TO, AGAIN, PAY A LITTLE HOMAGE TO COACH MATHIESON, COACH OF THE YEAR, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS COACH OF THE YEAR. WE'D LOVE TO GET ADAM IN HERE NEXT MONTH, IF WE CAN. WE FIGURED JUST TWO DAYS OUT AFTER A TOUGH LOSS, WE LET HIM GET A LITTLE BREAK TO CATCH HIS BREATH. BUT WE'D LOVE TO BRING ADAM IN AND CONGRATULATE HIM. AND OF COURSE, ONE OF THE STUDENTS MENTIONED JAKE DAVIDSON, THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL STARTING QUARTERBACK. HE IS THE WASHINGTON STATE GATORADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, AND THEN AT THE AND THEN AT THE SOON THEY'LL PICK A NATIONAL GATORADE [01:00:06] PLAYER OF THE YEAR. SO PRETTY HUGE HONOR FOR ONE OF OUR OUR KIDS TO GET THIS. AND THERE'LL BE A $1,000 GRANT DONATED IN HIS NAME. SO HUGE HONORS. I MEAN, NOW WE HAVE PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR, LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR, COACH OF THE YEAR, AND A GATORADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR. SO CAMAS' DOING WELL ACROSS THE BOARD. I WE'RE NOT GOING TO HAVE TIME TO GET DEEPLY INTO ASSESSMENT DATA, WE'LL BE GETTING INTO THAT LATER. BUT I DO WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THIS AND JUST HUGE KUDOS TO OUR TEACHERS, OUR PEREZ, ALL OF OUR EDUCATORS FOR THIS WORK. AGAIN, CAMAS IS A SHINING LIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO STATE ASSESSMENTS. THIS IS THIRD THROUGH 11TH GRADE, SMARTER BALANCED FROM LAST SPRING. AGAIN, WELL OVER 20% DIFFERENCE ABOVE AND BEYOND ANY OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICT IN WASHINGTON STATE OR I'M SORRY, OVERALL IN WASHINGTON STATE. SO ELA 74%. MATH 63%, SCIENCE 67%. I DO ALWAYS WANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT THIS THIS ALTHOUGH THIS IS INCREDIBLE WORK, WE ALSO NEED TO KEEP THE EYE ON THE PRIZE, ON THE STUDENTS THAT ARE STILL MISSING THE MARK, OR WE'RE MISSING THE MARK WITH THEM. STUDENTS WHO ARE IN MARGINALIZED GROUPS OR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS, ML STUDENTS FRL STUDENTS, ALL ALL OF THOSE STUDENT GROUPS THAT WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO HONE IN ON WHO SOMETIMES GET LOST IN THE IN THE PACK. SO AGAIN, OVERALL, OUR CAMAS STUDENTS ARE ARE JUST KILLING IT, BUT WE JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE INDIVIDUALIZING THAT AND VALUING EACH AND EVERY SINGLE STUDENT WE HAVE. AND WAS ABLE TO GET THIS UP PRETTY QUICK, I RAN TO MY OFFICE, POPPED UP SOME PICTURES. THESE STUDENTS ARE ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. MATTHEW, I COULD BARELY UNDERSTAND THE QUESTIONS YOU WERE ASKING, LET ALONE THE PRESENTATION. I WAS TRYING MY BEST TO FOLLOW ALONG. JUST AMAZING, AMAZING WORK. I LOVE THE STUDENT, THE STUDENT IN THE MIDDLE, LIAM, HE WENT TO THE PHILIPPINES AND ACTUALLY HELPED TO BUILD A BUILDING FOR THESE FOR THESE, THIS COMMUNITY. AND ONE OF THE THINGS HE TOLD ME WAS THAT HE DONATED HIS WORK BOOTS AT THE END TO A GENTLEMAN WHO WAS LEADING THE PROCESS. AND HE SAID, THE GENTLEMAN, IT WAS IT WAS LIKE HE GAVE THEM A BRAND NEW CADILLAC. AND HE SAID IT WAS SO EYE OPENING TO ME TO REALIZE HOW GREAT WE HAVE IT HERE. AND FOR THIS GUY TO TAKE MY CEMENTED BOOTS AND PUT THEM ON AND SAY, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. AND THEN ANOTHER YOUNG LADY WHO DID A PROJECT WORKING WITH ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND AND SHARING SOME HANDS ON ACTIVITIES WITH THEM. IT WAS FUNNY BECAUSE I SAID, OH, GREAT, DO YOU WANT TO GET INTO THAT LINE OF WORK? AND SHE'S LIKE, NO, I WANT TO DO CANCER RESEARCH. AND SO I WAS LIKE, OH, MAN, I ALMOST HAD HER. BUT BUT WE'LL SEE, MAYBE SHE'LL CHANGE HER MIND. BUT THANK YOU AGAIN FOR EVERYBODY. TOM MORRIS AND AND MISS ABRAMS AND EVERYONE WHO IS A PART OF THAT. THEY DO DO INCREDIBLE WORK. SO WITH THAT SAID ALWAYS END WITH A THUMBS UP. WE'RE GOING TO BE OKAY. THANKS EVERYONE. THANK YOU. ANYTHING ELSE FOR JOHN? ALL RIGHT. THAT'S GOING TO MOVE US TO ITEM 3B ON THE AGENDA. IT'S JUST A COUPLE OF ITEMS ADDED TO THE AGENDA SINCE IT WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED. SO WE'VE GOT A WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENT AND A HUMAN RESOURCES ADDENDUM. [4. CULTURE] SO WITH THAT, THAT'S GOING TO MOVE US DOWN TO ITEM 4A, WHICH IS PUBLIC COMMENT. LIKE I SAID, I DO HAVE ONE WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENT THAT WAS ENTERED INTO THE RECORD. THE BOARD VALUES PUBLIC INPUT, THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD IS TO LISTEN AND REFLECT ON PUBLIC COMMENTS. THE BOARD MAY ONLY DISCUSS AND ACT UPON ITEMS INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN AGENDA. FOR THAT REASON, BOARD MEMBERS CANNOT RESPOND TO ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS DURING PUBLIC COMMENT, BUT CAN ASK THE SUPERINTENDENT TO FOLLOW UP ON ISSUES RAISED DURING PUBLIC TESTIMONY. GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC INPUT EMPHASIZE THE RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS. BOISTEROUS CONDUCT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AT ANY MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, NOR WILL ANY HARASSING OR THREATENING REMARKS BE TOLERATED. COMPLAINTS ABOUT INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE AS A PERSONNEL MATTER. THE BOARD REQUESTS THAT ANYONE WHO HAS SUBMITTED WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENT REFRAIN FROM READING THEM DURING THIS PORTION OF OUR MEETING TO ALLOW OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO SHARE THEIR COMMENTS. EACH PERSON PROVIDING PUBLIC COMMENT WILL HAVE A TOTAL OF THREE MINUTES. ONCE CALLED UPON, PLEASE STEP UP TO THE MICROPHONE, FACE THE BOARD AND STATE YOUR NAME FOR THE RECORD. THE BELL WILL RING AT THREE MINUTES TO REMIND YOU THAT YOUR TIME IS UP. WE HAVE TWO PUBLIC COMMENTS TONIGHT. SO FIRST ONE, I'D INVITE UP KAREN VITEK. GOOD EVENING. HOPE. HOPEFULLY I'M CLOSE ENOUGH. WE DID PROVIDE WRITTEN TESTIMONY TO GO INTO THE RECORD. SO I CAN BE BRIEF THIS EVENING. WE ALSO SENT A LETTER TO THE FULL SCHOOL BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT AND JASON MCKEITHEN ON NOVEMBER 14TH WITH A LOT MORE [01:05:02] DETAILS. AND THAT I DO APPRECIATE. THANK YOU. THAT THAT OPENED A DIALOG. AND WE'RE HAPPY TO CONTINUE THAT DIALOG GOING FORWARD. MY NAME IS KAREN VITEK. MY HUSBAND IS CLARK VITEK. WE OWN EVERGREEN TENNIS IN CAMAS. WE OPPOSE THE PROPOSED USTA TENNIS CENTER ON CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL. WE DO NOT BELIEVE IT'S IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OR THE CAMAS COMMUNITY RESIDENTS. THE SHARED USE OF A TENNIS CENTER BETWEEN THE USTA AND THE HIGH SCHOOL IS INCOMPATIBLE. WE ASKED THE SCHOOL BOARD TO RECONSIDER ITS DECISION TO PROCEED WITH BUILDING A PUBLIC USTA TENNIS CENTER ON THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS, WITH UNNECESSARY AND EXCESSIVE SITE IMPROVEMENTS, TRAFFIC, AND EXPENSE. WE ASKED THE SCHOOL BOARD TO DIRECT STAFF TO INVESTIGATE ALTERNATIVES FOR REPAIRING AND COVERING THE COURTS, INCLUDING A SIMPLER OUTDOOR PAVILION COVER WHICH WOULD ENSURE MAXIMUM USE AND CONTROL BY THE SCHOOL. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. OUR NEXT PUBLIC COMMENT IS VANESSA NEAL. WELL. GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS VANESSA NEAL, AND I'M HERE TO COMMENT ON THE RECENT CHANGES TO THE 2025-26 ACADEMIC CALENDAR. SO FOR MY PROFESSION, I'M AN EXECUTIVE, I'VE RECENTLY TAKEN MY COLLEAGUES THROUGH AN EQUITABLE DECISION MAKING AROUND THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR OUR INSTITUTIONS. SO I KNOW THAT THERE'S A LOT THAT GOES INTO THE PROCESS. BUT TONIGHT I'M HERE AS A MOTHER OF SOMEBODY WHO GOES TO THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT. SO I FIRST WANT TO THANK FOLKS WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THE REVIEW OF THE CALENDAR AND RESEARCHING IDEAS TO CREATE BALANCE FOR STAFF, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. THOUGH THERE WERE SOME MEMBERS OF THE CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE INVOLVED WITH THE RECOMMENDATION, I DON'T BELIEVE THERE WAS ENOUGH INPUT FROM THE CSD COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY FROM HOUSEHOLDS THAT HAVE TWO WORKING PARENTS OR SINGLE FAMILY HOUSEHOLDS. WITH THE COST OF LIVING, MANY MORE FOLKS NEED TO WORK, AND THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. I'M SURE YOU'RE AWARE THAT THE CHANGES TO THE 25-26 ACADEMIC CALENDAR ADDED ABOUT 56 HOURS OF TIME OFF THAT PARENTS WOULD NEED TO STRATEGICALLY PLAN FOR, WITH THE HOPES OF FINDING CHILDCARE. I WAS AT THE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE LAST WEEK AND ODDLY ENOUGH, THERE WAS CONVERSATION ABOUT, WELL, NOT ODDLY, I THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING, BUT THERE WAS CONVERSATION ABOUT CHILDCARE AND THIS BEING A CHILDCARE DESERT. THIS HAS BEEN A CONSTANT CONVERSATION AMONGST VARIOUS PARENTS AT MY CHILD'S SCHOOL, AS WELL AS STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE ON MY TEAM. MY ASK, THAT WOULD WOULD BE FOR FOR THE 26-27 ACADEMIC CALENDAR BEFORE IT ROLLS OUT TO PLEASE TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION, MORE VOICES. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR MORE OF AN EQUITABLE APPROACH FOR REST. I BELIEVE IN REST IS RESISTANCE, BUT I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THERE'S A MORE EQUITABLE APPROACH FOR THE REST OF STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND STAFF TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION FOR THAT NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR. SO THANK YOU FOR HEARING MY COMMENTS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU. THANK YOU. YOU CAN BE AGGRESSIVE WITH IT. IT'S OKAY. THERE WE GO. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. THAT MOVES US OUT OF PUBLIC COMMENT. [5. SYSTEMS/PATHWAYS: CONSENT AGENDA] MOVE US DOWN TO ITEM 5, THE CONSENT AGENDA, LOOKING FOR A MOTION AND A SECOND. I WILL MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA. I SECOND. SO IT WAS MOVED BY TRACEY SECONDED BY BAMINI. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. MOTION CARRIES. OKAY. ITEM 6 OR SECTION 6. [6. SYSTEMS/PATHWAYS: Annual Organizational Elections] WE HAVE OUR ANNUAL ORGANIZATIONAL ELECTIONS. SO WE NEED TO ELECT A PRESIDENT AND A VICE PRESIDENT FOR THE THE BOARD FOR THE NEXT CALENDAR YEAR. AND SO I WOULD LIKE TO OPEN IT UP FOR NOMINATIONS FOR SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT. AND I WOULD LOVE TO NOMINATE COREY AGAIN. I'M NOT GOING TO DO THAT I'D LIKE TO NOMINATE TRACEY MALONE AS PRESIDENT FOR PRESIDENT. IS THERE A SECOND? I SECOND. OKAY, SO THE NOMINATION OF TRACEY MALONE WAS PUT OUT THERE BY A MOTION BY CONNIE, SECONDED BY MATTHEW. [01:10:04] ANY DISCUSSION? I JUST WANT TO SAY, OH GO AHEAD. NO, NO, NO, YOU GO AHEAD. I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY THANK YOU. WE WERE WE'VE BEEN IN SOME TUMULTUOUS YEARS, AND I UNDERSTAND THE, THE THE DECISION OF THE GROUP TO TO KEEP ME HERE FOR THREE YEARS FOR SOME CONSISTENCY SAKE. BUT IT WAS A IT'S TYPICALLY A ONE YEAR TERM. SO IT'S IT'S IT'S APPRECIATED. AND AND THANK YOU FOR FOR STEPPING FORWARD FOR THAT TOO. LOTS OF THANKS. IF I CAN JUST GIVE THANKS TO COREY BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN LEADING US FOR WE DO TRY TO SHARE THE WORK HERE AS A BOARD AND WE WE WORK REALLY WELL TOGETHER. AND SO I KNOW YOU'VE DONE IT FOR MANY YEARS IN A ROW. SO I'M HONORED THAT YOU GUYS HAVE THE CONFIDENCE IN ME TO LEAD US THIS NEXT YEAR. TRACEY LED US IN 2021, AND WE KNOW WHAT KIND OF YEAR THAT WAS SO I THINK YOU'RE MAKING A GOOD DECISION. SO UNLESS THERE'S ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR OF ELECTING TRACEY MALONE PRESIDENT BEGINNING JANUARY 1ST? AYE, AYE. ALL RIGHT. MOTION CARRIES. WE ALSO NEED TO WE ALSO NEED TO NOMINATE A VICE PRESIDENT FOR NEXT CALENDAR YEAR. IF I CAN MAKE THAT NOMINATION, I WOULD LOVE TO NOMINATE CONNIE HENNESSEY AS THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR NEXT YEAR. I SECOND IF THERE IS SUCH A THING. OKAY, YEAH. SO TRACEY MADE A MOTION FOR CONNIE HENNESSEY TO BE VICE PRESIDENT, BAMINI SECONDED. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION ON THAT? THANK YOU BOTH FOR STEPPING UP. REALLY DO APPRECIATE IT. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. AYE. MOTION CARRIES. WE HAVE A NEW ADMINISTRATION COME JANUARY 1ST. THANK YOU. I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. DON'T WORRY. IT WILL STILL WE'LL HAVE WE'LL HAVE A GOOD TRANSITION HERE AND EVERYTHING. SO. ALL RIGHT. YES. YEAH. ALL RIGHT. [7. CULTURE - Open and Effective Communications] THAT MOVES US DOWN. OOPS. I SKIPPED ONE HERE. THAT MOVES US DOWN TO ITEM 7A AND THAT IS AN ADDENDUM TO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S CONTRACT. THIS IS ONE OF OUR PLANNED REDUCTIONS HERE THAT THAT JOHN HAS VOLUNTEERED TO TAKE ON. SO WITH YOUR APPROVAL, THIS WILL BE STRIPPING THE THE IPD INCREASE THAT JOHN RECEIVES IN HIS CONTRACT THAT WILL BE STRIPPING IT OUT FOR THE FOR THE FOR FUTURE YEARS OF HIS CONTRACT. ALSO AMENDS HIS VACATION BUYBACK. REDUCES IT FROM 30 TO 20. SO JUST SOME I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT THE ESTIMATED COST SAVINGS ON THIS IS. I'M SORRY TO PUT YOU ON. IT'S KIND OF AN AWKWARD SPOT TO BE TALKING ABOUT. NO, NO. IT'S OKAY. IT'S OKAY. I APPRECIATE IT. SO IT'S A TOTAL OF JUST AROUND $20,000 SAVINGS TO TO THE DISTRICT. I WENT WITH, IT'S IT'S HARD RIGHT NOW TO ESTIMATE EXACTLY WHAT IPD WILL BE. IT COMES OUT IN JANUARY, BUT THE ESTIMATED IS BETWEEN 1.9 AND 2.4 RIGHT NOW. AND SO I JUST WENT WITH A 2% REDUCTION AND, AND THEN IF YOU ADD IN THE BENEFIT, YOU KNOW, TAKE THAT OFF OF BENEFITS, TAKE THAT OFF OF ANNUITY AND THEN POTENTIAL OF, OF BUYING BACK 10 VACATION DAYS THAT COMES TO A GRAND TOTAL OF JUST ABOUT $20,000 SAVINGS. AND THEN THOSE OTHER 20 DAYS THAT THERE'S OPPORTUNITY TO BUY BACK, I'LL BE VERY, VERY, VERY CONSERVATIVE WITH THAT. I JUST WANTED TO NOT OVERSHOOT RIGHT NOW, JUST TO GIVE GIVE MYSELF A LITTLE BIT OF LEEWAY IN CASE I NEED VACATION. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, THAT'S GOING TO BE COMMISERATE WITH WHAT WE'RE MOST LIKELY GOING TO BRING TO THE TABLE FOR CABINET MEMBERS AS WELL. SO JUST TRYING TO BE EQUITABLE, SO ABOUT $20,000, GIVE OR TAKE. YEAH, I APPRECIATE YOU THE MOST OF THIS IS VOLUNTARY. SO I DO APPRECIATE THAT. IS THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR STAFF OR ANY COMMENTS? OTHERWISE I'D LOOK FOR A MOTION AND A SECOND TO APPROVE THIS ADDENDUM. I MOVE TO APPROVE THE ADDENDUM TO THE SUPERINTENDENT'S EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT AS SUBMITTED. I SECOND. MOVED BY MATTHEW SECONDED BY BAMINI. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. MOTION CARRIES. THANK YOU. THANKS, COREY AND THANKS BOARD. I THINK WE'LL WE'LL PUT THAT AS PART OF THE THE JANUARY OR FEBRUARY PACKAGE OR ANNOUNCEMENT. I JUST DIDN'T WANT TO I DIDN'T WANT TO SINGLE MYSELF OUT. IT'S JUST I NEEDED APPROVAL FOR THAT EARLY ON IN ORDER TO MOVE FORWARD. SO IT'LL BE A BIGGER PART OF A BIGGER PACKAGE COMING UP. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT. THAT MOVES US TO SECTION 8 OF THE AGENDA, 8A IS POLICY 6022, MINIMUM FUND BALANCE. [8. SYSTEMS/PATHWAYS: INFORMED AND RESPONSIBLE USE OF RESOURCES] THIS IS OUR SECOND READING. THERE HASN'T BEEN ANY CHANGES TO TO THIS SINCE THE FIRST READING AT THE LAST MEETING. SO IF THE BOARD IS READY TO VOTE ON THIS, I'D ENTERTAIN A MOTION AND A SECOND. I MOVE TO APPROVE POLICY 6022 MINIMUM FUND BALANCE AS SUBMITTED FOR SECOND READING AND ADOPTION. I'LL SECOND THAT. THIS IS MOVED BY BAMINI, SECONDED BY CONNIE. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? [01:15:02] AYE. MOTION CARRIES. THANK YOU. AND LAST ITEM ON THE AGENDA. MY NOTES UP HERE. THIS IS A STUDENT PLACEMENT APPROVAL THAT'S BEING REQUESTED BY SPECIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT FOR PLACEMENT FOR ONE OF THEIR STUDENTS. SO I'D ENTERTAIN A MOTION AND A SECOND ON THIS. I MOVE TO APPROVE THE STUDENT PLACEMENT AT UTAH YOUTH VILLAGE ALPINE ACADEMY AS PRESENTED. I'LL SECOND. OKAY. MOVED BY TRACEY SECONDED BY BAMINI. ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. MOTION CARRIES. AND WITH THAT, IT IS 6:45 P.M.. THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF OUR REGULAR MEETING. WE DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER MEETING IN DECEMBER BECAUSE OF THE WINTER BREAK. SO WE'LL SEE YOU BACK HERE IN JANUARY, I BELIEVE, JANUARY 13TH FOR OUR NEXT WORKSHOP. SO UNTIL THEN WE ARE ADJOURNED. * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
