THEY WON SECOND PLACE IN REGIONALS AND BROUGHT GOLD HOME AT THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

MAYA ERICKSON AND ALAYNA HERMAN, WHO HAVE BEEN DOING ANIMATION FOR A WHILE.

THEY CREATED A REALLY DYNAMIC ANIMATION WITH SOME GREAT CHARACTERS LIKE CARL THE PIGEON AND SOME TWISTY PLOT LINES THAT INVOLVED SOME MURDER AND ALL KINDS OF INTERESTING ANIMATED VISUAL STORYTELLING.

OUR WEB PROGRAM HELPS INCOMING SIXTH GRADERS TRANSITION INTO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND EASE THE STRESS AND ANXIETY THAT MAY COME WITH THAT.

TESTING SEASON IS QUICKLY APPROACHING. STUDENTS RECENTLY COMPLETED THE I-READY SPRING DIAGNOSTIC AND HAVE BEEN PRACTICING INTERIM SBAC TESTS TO PREPARE FOR THE STATE TESTING IN THE COMING WEEKS. THE EIGHTH GRADE HAS SCIENCE THAT THE TESTS THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY, BEFORE ALL GRADES, WILL TAKE THE SBAC ELA AND SBAC MATH TESTS IN THAT ORDER.

OUR FINAL CLOSURE OF THE YEAR WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY, MAY 30TH.

AFTER SCHOOL, WE WILL HAVE DANCING, SPORTS, A CUPCAKE WALK, PHOTO STATIONS, CONCESSIONS FOR SALE, ARTS AND CRAFTS, AND A MOVIE ROOM. THE ADMIN AND COUNSELORS WILL BE VISITING OUR FEEDER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THE FIRST WEEK OF JUNE TO TALK TO THEM ABOUT COMING TO LIBERTY AND ANSWERING THEIR QUESTIONS.

MOST RECENTLY, WE PLANNED SOMETHING CALLED A THRIFT DAY WHERE WE EXCHANGE CLOTHES BACK AND FORTH.

NO MONEY. IT WAS SUPER COOL. A LOT OF POSITIVE ENERGY IN THERE.

IT WAS SUPER COOL. AND THEN FRIENDS OF TREES IS SOMETHING WE'RE ALSO INTEGRATING INTO OUR VOLUNTEER HOURS.

WE JUST PLANT TREES. IT WAS SUPER COOL. I'M HERE TO BE TALKING ABOUT OUR SENIOR CAPSTONE PRESENTATIONS, WHICH I'VE HEARD THAT YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO BE JOINING US FOR THAT, WHICH I'M PARTICULARLY EXCITED FOR. OUR SENIOR CLASS ENTIRELY IS EXCITED TO HAVE YOU AND BE ABLE TO HEAR OUR EXPERIENCES THAT WE'VE HAD THROUGHOUT HAYS. AND WE'RE JUST REALLY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU.

I THINK WE'RE GOING TO PUT AN EMPHASIS ON THE ACHIEVEMENTS THE PAST MONTH BY DISCOVERY STUDENTS.

AND THIS IS ACROSS PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING WE HAVE, LIKE A MATH CLUB AND THE 2D ANIMATION AND ARCHITECTURE CLUB.

SO VERY PROUD OF HOW DISCOVERY HAS BEEN ACHIEVING ACROSS SO MANY DIFFERENT, YOU KNOW, OUTLETS FOR STUDENTS TO ENJOY ACADEMICS OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM.

SO WE'RE GOING TO START WITH THE STATE COMPETITION WE HAVE THIS SATURDAY.

SO THAT'S THE MATH CLUB THAT I'M THE PRESIDENT OF.

WE'RE HEADING UP TO ELLENSBURG AND WE'RE BRINGING NINE STUDENTS, WHICH IS THE MOST STUDENTS WE'VE EVER BROUGHT TO A STATE COMPETITION.

AND WE'RE ACTUALLY BEING REPRESENTED FROM A STUDENT IN EACH GRADE AS WELL.

SO WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THAT. AND ALL THE STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING BASICALLY DID WELL ENOUGH IN THE REGIONAL COMPETITION TO BE ABLE TO GO TO THE STATE COMPETITION.

SO COMPETITION, SO WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THEM. WE'RE ALSO REALLY EXCITED FOR THE TEAM PROJECT WE'VE MENTIONED BEFORE.

LOGAN AND I HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD AT THAT. IT'S ABOUT REALLY WHAT MAKES DISCOVERY UNIQUE.

WE HAVE DIFFERENT EIGHT DIFFERENT PHENOMENA THAT WE'VE BEEN RESEARCHING.

I THINK ONE OF THEM THAT I GAVE AS AN EXAMPLE WAS THE HALLWAYS WITH WHITEBOARDS ON THEM AND HOW STUDENTS AT DISCOVERY LEARN THROUGHOUT THEIR CLASSES VERTICALLY. I THINK WE'VE DISCUSSED THAT BEFORE. THEY WENT TO THE ARLENE SCHNITZER CONCERT HALL FOR A PERFORMANCE BY PROFESSIONAL SYMPHONIC BAND.

OUR MUSIC TEACHER, MR. BATEMAN, SAID THE STUDENTS HAD A BLAST AND LEARNED A LOT, SO THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED.

WAS PRETTY COOL. AND THE LAST THING I'M SHARING IS A BIT MORE PERSONAL FOR ME.

ON FRIDAY THE 18TH, I ACTUALLY HAD AN ASSEMBLY FOR MY SENIOR PROJECT, AND IT WAS ABOUT LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND HOW TO GET INVOLVED. AND I HAD THE INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO ACTUALLY WORK WITH MAYOR HOGAN AND FORMER MAYOR NAN HENRICKSON.

SO, IT WAS A GREAT TIME WORKING WITH THEM AND ACTUALLY BRINGING THEM INTO THE BUILDING AND HAVING THEM SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES AND ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS FOR THE STUDENTS.

AND I THINK THAT WAS A REALLY GREAT OPPORTUNITY, AND I REALLY ENJOYED IT A LOT.

SO EVEN THOUGH IT HAPPENED TEN DAYS AGO, I'D STILL LIKE TO THANK BOTH OF THEM SO MUCH FOR HELPING WITH THAT PROJECT.

EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ALL DRESSED UP, THEY WERE GRABBING EACH OTHER'S FOOD. WHEN SOMEBODY DIDN'T LIKE FOOD, THEY WOULD JUST. THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THEIR FORKS. BUT ONE STUDENT, MY TABLE, LOVED GREEN BEANS. NO ONE ELSE DID, AND SHE JUST STARTED GRABBING THEM WITH HER HAND LIKE YOU NEED TO USE YOUR FORK.

AND SO, WITH, WITH THE, THE DECREASE OF ALL THAT AND ALL THESE FACTORS THAT YOU, THAT YOU POINTED OUT WERE IN THE POINT WHERE WE HAVE NO OTHER NO OTHER OPTIONS TO DECREASE OUR EXPENSES OR INCREASE OUR REVENUE OTHER THAN THIS AWFUL SITUATION THAT WE'RE IN RIGHT NOW.

YEAH. AND I THINK THIS WAS AN INTERESTING SESSION WITH THE NEW GOVERNOR.

NOT TO GET TOO MUCH INTO THE WEEDS THERE, BUT I THINK REALLY WANTING A CAP ON TAX INCREASES AND TAX REVENUE.

AND SO THIS THIS WEEK WAS WAS THE START OF A HARD WEEK.

AGAIN, BASED ON SENIORITY THERE'S MANY OF OUR, OUR STAFF HAVE NOW BEEN DISPLACED, AND WE'RE HOPING THAT BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, WE'LL BE ABLE TO, YOU KNOW, DISPLACE PEOPLE AND GET THEM INTO POSITIONS.

AND THAT'S A VERY INTRICATE, COMPLEX PROCESS THAT HR AND DEREK AND OTHERS ARE HELPING TO MANAGE.

AGAIN, NOT EASY, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO MAINTAIN ALL FOUR OF OUR CHOICE OR OUR PROGRAMS AND OUR CHOICE PROGRAMS WITH MUSIC.

WHAT WE'VE DONE, INSTEAD OF HAVING TO USE THE TERM CUT MUSIC OR ARTS, WHAT WE HAD TO DO IS REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FTE.

SO BASICALLY, SHRINK THE AMOUNT OF SECTIONS THAT ARE OUR MUSIC EDUCATORS ARE TEACHING.

SO, FOR EXAMPLE, FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, YOU SEE THERE WERE 51.0 OR FULL TIME MUSIC STAFF THAT WERE REDUCED TO 0.8.

SO ESSENTIALLY IN IN A HIGH SCHOOL OR MIDDLE SCHOOL TERM, IT WOULD BE ESSENTIALLY ONE PERIOD.

UNFORTUNATELY, WHAT WE HAD TO LOOK AT IS CLASS SIZES.

SO, CLASSES IN OUR ARTS OR OTHER ELECTIVE AREAS THAT WERE UNDER 30 IS WHERE WE, WE TARGETED.

AND SO THAT SHRUNK HOW MUCH FTE WE CAN HAVE THERE.

SO AGAIN, RETAINING ALL THE PROGRAMS, RETAINING THE ACTUAL EDUCATOR, IT'S JUST FOR THE TIME BEING, HAVING TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FTE PER. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? AND IN ADDITION TO MUSIC. AND THAT'S THE BIG ONE. AND I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE HERE TONIGHT FOR THAT. BUT I DO WANT TO MENTION THAT AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL, WE ALSO HAD TO LOOK AT CTE, SPANISH, HISTORY AND SCIENCE, THOSE SPECIFIC CLASSES THAT WERE UNDER 30.

ANYTHING OVER 30 WE WERE ABLE TO MAINTAIN. AND AGAIN, THAT WAS AN ARBITRARY NUMBER, BUT IT WAS REALLY A NUMBER WHERE WE FELT THAT WE JUST COULDN'T SUSTAIN UNDER THIS TIGHT BUDGET OUTLOOK, IF THAT MAKES SENSE.

NOW, WITH JAZZ BAND SPECIFICALLY, WE'RE REALLY LOOKING CLOSELY WITH THAT BECAUSE WE KNOW AND I KNOW WE HAVE A LOT OF MUSIC EDUCATORS THAT WOULD PROBABLY AGREE THAT JAZZ BAND IS REALLY THAT THAT THAT FOUNDATIONAL FOR MOVING ON TO OTHER AREAS OF MUSIC AND ALSO TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO TAKE MARCHING BAND AND OTHERS.

SO WHAT WE'D LIKE TO DO IS WORK WITH CEA TO POTENTIALLY OFFER JAZZ BAND AS A CLUB WITH A STIPEND.

I CAN'T GUARANTEE THAT YET BECAUSE THAT IS TYPICALLY NEGOTIATED.

WE HAVE A PLETHORA OF STIPENDS THAT WE OFFER, BUT IF WE CAN OFFER THAT AT THE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL AND OUR TEACHERS ARE WILLING TO DO THAT, IT WILL AT LEAST MAINTAIN AND NOT CUT THE PROGRAM OFF AT THE KNEES.

SO THAT'S A HOPE. IT'S NOT IN WRITING YET, JUST BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO HAVE TO BE BARGAINED.

AND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, SPECIFICALLY CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, TO SEE HOW ENROLLMENT LOOKS AGAIN WITH THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION PANS OUT TO BE TO SEE IF WE CAN SOMEHOW BRING THAT BACK.

BUT AGAIN, A LOT OF THAT WILL HAVE TO WE'LL HAVE TO WORK WITH ADMIN TO MAKE SURE THAT WORKS WITHIN THEIR SCHEDULE.

CORE ADOPTIONS ALWAYS COME TO THE BOARD. TONIGHT IS AN UPDATE ON THAT.

AS JOHN SAID, IS OUR IS OUR CURRENTLY ADOPTED CURRICULUM FOR K-5.

AND WHEN THE SCIENCE OF READING, WHICH HAS BEEN AROUND FOR QUITE A WHILE, BUT IT STARTED TO TAKE HOLD IT SENT MANY VENDORS AND PUBLISHERS INTO A SEARCH FOR HOW TO MAKE SURE THAT THEIR, THEIR RESOURCES WERE COMPREHENSIVE.

SO, THERE'S ALWAYS THAT SWEET WAITING SPOT, TOO, YOU KNOW, WHEN WILL THE RESOURCES CATCH UP WITH THE RESEARCH AND THE EVIDENCE.

SO, WE FEEL LIKE THE PLAN IN PLACE WILL ACTUALLY HELP US CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD, NOT JUST WAIT.

AND WHAT IT'S GOING TO BE KNOWING THAT THIS SLIDE HAS VERY, VERY LITTLE TEXT ON IT.

IN MY CONVERSATIONS WITH HER, I'VE BEEN ABLE TO OBSERVE HOW MR. EDMONDSON IS TEACHING SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST CHORAL SINGING TECHNIQUE.

IT'S THROUGH HIS SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT THAT SHE HAS REPRESENTED LIBERTY AT THE STATE HONOR CHOIR.

HIS CARE FOR HIS STUDENTS AND THEIR GROWTH IS EVIDENT IN THE TIME HE PUTS INTO PLANNING NOT ONLY OUTSTANDING CHORAL PERFORMANCES, BUT MUSIC RESEARCH PROJECTS, IN-CLASS OPPORTUNITIES, AND EXTRA SUPPORT, SUCH AS HELPING THE HONOR CHOIR STUDENTS PREPARE FOR THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH BEFORE SCHOOL PRACTICES. HOWEVER, CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS NOT SHOWN AN EQUAL LEVEL OF SUPPORT TO MY DAUGHTER'S ARTISTIC NEEDS.

AS AN ELEMENTARY STUDENT, SHE RECEIVED LESS WEEKLY MUSIC INSTRUCTION THAN HER PEERS IN NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS.

COMPOUNDED BY THE FACT THAT FOR TWO YEARS RUNNING, HER MUSIC CLASSES WERE ON MONDAYS.

SO, EVERY TIME THERE WAS A MONDAY HOLIDAY, SHE MISSED OUT ON MUSIC COMPLETELY.

WHEREAS IF SHE'D HAD MUSIC TWICE A WEEK, SHE WOULD HAVE AT LEAST GOTTEN A LITTLE BIT. SHE MISSED OUT ON DRAMA AND DRUMMING ELECTIVES BECAUSE THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH SLOTS TO FILL THE NEED FOR THESE POPULAR CLASSES, AND NOT ENOUGH FTE GIVEN TO TEACHERS TO TEACH THOSE CLASSES FOR HER.

AND NOW WE'VE LEARNED THAT THE DISTRICT IS PROPOSING TO FURTHER CUT MUSIC BY REDUCING THE FTE OF SECONDARY MUSIC TEACHERS.

WE'RE BOTH VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE LACK OF SUPPORT THESE PROPOSED CUTS SHOW FOR THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS AND THEIR RIGHTS TO HAVE A FULL AND RICH EXPERIENCE AT SCHOOL.

CORE. COULDN'T BE HERE TONIGHT, BUT SHE WROTE SOME OF HER OWN WORDS ON THE SUBJECT, AND I WOULD LIKE TO READ THEM TO YOU.

ON NOVEMBER 4TH, 2024, AFTER SEEING THE PENDING RESULTS OF THE ELECTION AND REALIZING THAT FUNDING FOR OUR ARTS PROGRAMS COULD BE IN JEOPARDY, I STOOD THERE STARING AT MY PHONE WHILE MY THROAT TIGHTENED AND I WAS OVERCOME BY A SENSE OF HORROR.

MY CASTMATES HUDDLED AROUND ME IN A CIRCLE NEAR THE GREENROOM DOOR, REALIZING WHAT WAS HAPPENING.

WE WERE 22 SCARED CHILDREN WITH NO CONTROL OVER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE VERY PROGRAMS THAT ARE OUR LIFELINE.

AND NOW I STAND BEFORE YOU, REPRESENTING A LOT MORE THAN 22 OF US, AND WE ARE STILL JUST AS SCARED.

FOR STUDENTS WORKING HARD TO JOIN JAZZ BAND, THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF MOTIVATION AND A GOAL TO WORK TOWARDS, ONE THAT COULD EVEN LEAD TO A LIFELONG INTEREST IN MUSIC.

FOR ME, JAZZ BAND IS A REASON TO LOOK FORWARD TO GOING TO SCHOOL EACH DAY.

I'M HERE TO SPEAK TO THE CURRENT BUDGETING CONCERNS, SPEAKING TOWARDS SPECIFICALLY THE MUSIC AND ARTS PROGRAMS. NOTHING HAS IMPACTED ME MORE IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT THAN THE BENEFIT I'VE REAPED FROM THE MUSIC AND ARTS PROGRAMS OFFERED HERE.

SINCE I'VE MOVED TO CAMAS, I'VE BEEN A MEMBER OF GUITAR CLASS, ART CLASS, CHOIR, AND MOST PROMINENTLY, THEATER. EACH HAS MADE A MAJOR IMPACT ON MY LIFE AND GROWTH, WHETHER THAT BE AS A STUDENT OR SIMPLY AS A PERSON.

THEY'VE ALL FORMED WHO I AM TODAY. THESE CLASSES WOULD NOT RUN WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF OUR EDUCATORS, ALL OF WHOM DO IT OUT OF PASSION. EACH AND EVERY DIRECTOR AND MUSIC TEACHER I'VE HAD HAS SUPPORTED THEIR STUDENTS LIKE NO OTHER.

THE CONNECTION CREATED WITH STUDENTS IN FOSTERING THEIR CREATIVITY IS OUTSTANDING, AND THE BENEFIT REAPED IS EVEN MORE EXCEPTIONAL.

I, AS HAVE MANY OF MY FRIENDS, HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY CHANGED FOR THE BETTER THROUGH OUR WORK WITH THE VARIOUS THEATER DEPARTMENTS OF THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

TO PUT IT SIMPLY, THEATER HAS SAVED MY LIFE. BEFORE I BEGAN ENGAGING WITH THE MUSICALS, I FELT AS THOUGH I'D BEEN CIRCLING THE DRAIN.

MY GRADES AND MY WELL-BEING HAD FALLEN AT THE WAYSIDE.

PARTAKING IN THEATER WAS THE VERY THING THAT GAVE LIFE AND LIVING THE MEANING I HAD CRAVED FOR YEARS.

I STAND HERE TODAY BEFORE YOU, HAVING JUST CLOSED MY THIRD AND FINAL SKYRIDGE MUSICAL WITH THE BELOVED AND IRREPLACEABLE MISS MAYS AND MISS SAPPINGTON.

BOTH OF THEM HAVE DONE SO MUCH FOR ME, AND THEIR SHOWS HAVE TAUGHT ME WHAT IT MEANS TO BE TRULY PASSIONATE ABOUT SOMETHING.

AND SO ASK ANYONE I KNOW, AND THEY'LL TELL YOU THAT ALL I'VE SPOKEN OF SINCE MY FINAL PERFORMANCE WITH THEM IS MY EXCITEMENT SURROUNDING THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL THEATER DEPARTMENT, LED BY MR. KELLY AND THE CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR DEPARTMENT LED BY MR. CHESSON. I'D VENTURE SO FAR AS TO SAY THAT THESE ARE THE MOST MAJOR FACTORS I HAVE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT REGARDING MY UPCOMING HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.

IT WAS THE FINAL SHOW. THAT THEATER WAS PACKED AT THE END.

A NUMBER OF EIGHTH GRADE GRADERS SPOKE ABOUT HOW MUCH THE MUSIC AND DRAMA PROGRAM MEANT TO THEIR MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARS.

MIDDLE SCHOOL. NOT A GOOD TIME. HOW THEY'VE GROWN AND HOW MUCH THEY LOVE THEIR THEATER COMMUNITY.

I NOTICED THAT THE MISSION OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT CENTERS AROUND COMMUNITY.

WHY WERE WE THERE? WHEN MY CHILD WASN'T EVEN ON STAGE, WE WERE THERE BECAUSE OUR SON VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS AS A STAGEHAND. EACH NIGHT WHEN I PICKED HIM UP, I HEARD ABOUT HOW HE SUPPORTED DANCERS, ACTORS, AND SINGERS SO THAT THEY COULD GIVE THEIR BEST PERFORMANCES.

AND THEY DID. THEY WERE AMAZING. COMMUNITY IS WHAT ARTS MEANS IN OUR SCHOOLS.

THEY EXPAND OUR MINDS AND ALLOW OURSELVES TO WALK IN SOMEONE ELSE'S SHOES.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? AS EARLY AS MAY OF 2021, DOCTOR MEADE WITH THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH SHARED THE RESULTS OF THE EFFECTS OF PANDEMIC ISOLATION ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH.

THE NIH STUDIES FOUND THAT THESE ISSUES INCREASED BY 25% IN THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PANDEMIC.

LUCKILY, THERE IS A SOLUTION. IT'S THE ARTS. IN NOBLE AND STUCKY'S 2010 NIH STUDY, THEY REPORTED THAT MUSIC THERAPY IS EFFECTIVE AT CALMING THE MIND. HAVE A TEEN OR CHILD WHO'S TRYING TO CONSTRUCT A POSITIVE IDENTITY.

THE VISUAL ARTS CAN HELP WITH THAT. ACCORDING TO NOBLE AND STUCKY, AS RECENTLY AS 2023, ANOTHER NIH STUDY SHOWED THAT DRAMA THERAPY CAN ASSIST WITH HELPING INDIVIDUALS WITH DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY BROUGHT ON SPECIFICALLY BY THE PANDEMIC.

THAT'S ALL THESE KIDS. YOU ALL CAN DO BETTER, AND YOU REALLY MUST DO BETTER.

PLEASE FIND OTHER WAYS TO MANAGE THE BUDGET CRISIS.

AND I STARTED MY MUSICAL JOURNEY IN JAZZ CHOIR WITH NATALIE WILSON AS MY DIRECTOR. I STARTED IN SECOND GRADE, WHICH WAS ONLY ALLOWED BECAUSE MY SISTER HAD BEEN IN THE PROGRAM FOR THREE YEARS.

BECAUSE THE FIRST GRADE YOU WERE ALLOWED TO START IN WAS THIRD.

SHE HAD BEEN JAZZ CHOIR FOR THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE, AND I, AS A SECOND GRADER, WAS ABLE TO JOIN JUST BECAUSE OF MY OLDER SISTER.

SHE WENT ON TO DO CHOIR IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL AS THEATER.

I, HOWEVER, WAS MORE OF A BAND KID BECAUSE I LEARNED HOW TO PLAY DRUMS BY EAR IN JAZZ CHOIR.

I THEN WENT ON TO DO BAND IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HAD THE HONOR OF BEING ABLE TO JOIN JAZZ BAND IN EIGHTH GRADE YEAR.

I KNEW I WASN'T A GOOD DRUMMER. I HAD LEARNED BY EAR GOING BUM.

BUBBLE GUM, BUBBLE GUM. BUBBLE GUM. BUBBLE GUM.

THAT WAS WHAT I KNEW. MY RHYTHM. I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO READ SHEET MUSIC.

I KNEW MY ONLY CHANCE TO BE IN JAZZ BAND WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND I GOT THAT CHANCE MY EIGHTH GRADE YEAR, AND IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE. I WENT ON TO DO BAND IN HIGH SCHOOL, AND I WAS A DRUMMER FOR ALL FOUR YEARS.

I WAS SECTION LEADER FOR THREE YEARS OF THREE OF THOSE YEARS, AND IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE GOING TO DISNEY,

MAKING BEST FRIENDS. IT WAS INCREDIBLE. ALL OF MY CLOSEST FRIENDS WERE IN JAZZ BAND, AND IT WAS QUITE A HARD HIT TO NOT BE ONE OF THEM, BUT I WAS THERE BEFORE SCHOOL, EVERY DAY IN THE BAND HALLWAY, LISTENING TO THEM PRACTICE.

I WAS IN CARPOOLS WITH ALL THE JAZZ KIDS, GOING TO SCHOOL AND HEARING THEM EVERY SINGLE DAY, AND THAT WAS SO IMPORTANT TO EVERYBODY. YOU TALK ABOUT GOING TO SEE THE MUSICAL THIS WEEKEND.

SO MANY OF THOSE KIDS GET SUPPORT FROM THEIR TEACHERS IN CHOIR CLASSES.

THEY LEARN HOW TO SING, TO GO ON TO AUDITION, AND SOMETIMES THEY GO ON TO AUDITION AND THEN COME BACK TO CHOIR.

THEY LEARN TO SING FROM THE MUSICALS AND GO BACK INTO THE SYSTEM.

THAT'S HOW IT WORKS. SO LISTEN, I'M HERE NOW AS A 24 YEAR OLD WHO'S BEEN THROUGH ALL OF THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

I STARTED HERE AT JDHS, WENT ON TO GRASS VALLEY, SKYRIDGE.

I HAD THE WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE LAST YEAR. I ENDED UP IN A PSYCH WARD, AND IT WAS MUSIC THAT PULLED ME OUT OF THAT.

PLAYING GUITAR IN A GUITAR CIRCLE IN THE PSYCH WARD WAS WHAT REALLY MADE ME REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS ABOUT LIFE THAT WAS IMPORTANT.

AND IT WAS BRENDA SAPPINGTON WHO GAVE ME THE CONFIDENCE TO PLAY GUITAR AND SING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE.

IT WAS LEARNING TO SING WITH HER WHEN SHE STARTED AT SKYRIDGE, MY EIGHTH GRADE YEAR.

THAT GAVE ME THAT CONFIDENCE TO BE ABLE TO SHARE AND CONNECT WITH PEOPLE THROUGH MUSIC.

SO PLEASE, PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR BUDGET CUTS.

THAT COMMUNITY IS VERY IMPORTANT AND IT SAVES PEOPLE'S LIVES.

WHAT MAKES THAT EDUCATION PREPARE THEM FOR LIFE? AND WHERE DO STUDENTS FIRST LEARN THE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS? AREN'T CLASSES LIKE CHOIR, DRAMA, BAND, SPEECH WHERE THE STUDENTS PRACTICE THE SKILLS? IF WE CUT THOSE ACCESSES EARLY, THEN WE MISS A LOT OF CHANCES FOR DEVELOPING THEM.

THESE PROGRAMS AREN'T SIDE ACTIVITIES; THEY'RE CORE HANDS ON EXPERIENCES FOR DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP AND CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING.

I'M THINKING OF A STUDENT SO NERVOUS BEGINNING OF SCHOOL, HE SITS DOWN ON THE FLOOR IN A CORNER AS STUDENTS PASS BY.

PULLS HIS HOOD OVER FACING THE CHROMEBOOK, AND HE WAS FORCED TO TAKE SPEECH CLASSES, PART OF A ROTATION WEEK.

NUMBER ONE. WE COULDN'T EVEN HEAR HIM SAY HIS NAME.

EIGHT WEEKS LATER, HE'S GIVING A 1.5 MINUTE SPEECH IN FRONT OF HIS PEERS, AND WE'RE TAKING THAT AWAY.

HOW MANY OTHER STUDENTS MIGHT BE WAITING FOR THAT SAME TASK? OUR ANXIETY RIDDLED AND SHY YOUTH NEED THE PERFORMING ARTS AND SPEECH CLASSES, EVEN WHEN IT'S DIFFICULT.

TAKE THEM AWAY AND WE REMOVE MANY CHILDREN'S OPPORTUNITIES TO ACHIEVE EQUITABLE OUTCOMES.

WHEN WE REDUCE PERFORMING ARTS AND SPEECH, WE LIMIT LEADERSHIP AND SPEAKING OPPORTUNITIES.

WHEN STUDENTS ARE FORMING THEIR IDENTITY, WE REDUCE ENGAGEMENT AND BELONGING FOR STUDENTS WHO DON'T SEE THEMSELVES IN THE TRADITIONAL SPACES, AND WE NARROW ACCESS FOR THE MARGINALIZED AND THE UNDERSERVED STUDENTS WHOSE FAMILIES CAN'T AFFORD THE PRIVATE LESSONS AND THE ENRICHMENT CAMPS.

ULTIMATELY, WE MOVE AWAY FROM OUR VERY GOALS THAT WE SAY THAT WE STAND FOR AS A DISTRICT.

I UNDERSTAND WE NEED TO TAKE THE RED PEN REDUCTIONS TO OUR BUDGET.

I HAVE CREATIVE IDEAS AND I'M WELCOME AND OPEN TO SHARING SOME OF THOSE.

I'M HERE BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN OUR DISTRICT'S MISSION AND OUR STUDENTS FUTURES, AND I RESPECTFULLY ASK YOU TO REDIRECT AND RECONSIDER WHERE THESE REDUCTIONS ARE GOING FOR THREE REASONS ONE, THE REDUCTIONS DO NOT FOLLOW SENIORITY IN THE BUILDINGS.

THREE YOUR NUMBERS ARE WRONG. AT LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE CHOIR PROGRAMS RANGE FROM 32 TO 46 STUDENTS IN EACH OF THE GRADES, AVERAGING 37. FOR THE CHOIR PROGRAM, THE BAND GOES FROM 32 TO 35, AVERAGING 30 FOR THE SMALL CLASSES.

FIRST, THESE PROGRAMS ARE INVALUABLE FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THERE IS IMPORTANT FOR MENTAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AS ANY OTHER CLASS OR ELECTIVE.

I'VE CONDUCTED DOCTORAL LEVEL RESEARCH ON THE NEURAL MAPPING THAT OCCURS NOT ONLY THROUGH GENERAL MUSIC, BUT SPECIFICALLY THROUGH JAZZ MUSIC THAT PROMOTES EVERY ASPECT OF LEARNING FOR A STUDENT. THESE PROGRAMS BENEFIT THE STUDENT FAR BEYOND THE PERCEIVED CLUB ACTIVITY OR CULTURAL EXPERIENCE.

WHILE I APPRECIATE THE EARLIER COMMENTS, JAZZ BANDS ARE NEVER GOING TO BE 30 KIDS.

IT REQUIRES A CERTIFIED MUSIC TEACHER. IT IS A SPECIFIC CLASS.

IT IS NOT A CLUB ACTIVITY. MY SECOND CONCERN.

IS THAT FINANCIALLY, IF OUR TEACHERS ARE OFFERED A REDUCED CONTRACT, THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO LIVE IN CAMPUS ANY LONGER.

THESE PROGRAMS REQUIRE PROXIMITY AS THERE IS SO MUCH COMMITMENT OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS.

FURTHER, AS RETIREMENT AVERAGES OUT THE LAST 60 MONTHS OF SERVICE.

THESE CUTS OFFER ALMOST NO INCENTIVE FOR VETERAN TEACHERS TO CONTINUE THEIR SERVICE.

NOT ONLY WOULD THEY BE TAKING A SIGNIFICANT PAY CUT, BUT THEIR RETIREMENT PENSION WOULD DECREASE BY CONTINUING THEIR CONTRACTS.

THIRD, IF WE MAKE THESE CUTS NOW, IT'S LIKELY THEY WON'T GET BACK WHAT WE'VE GIVEN UP.

ELEMENTARY DROPPED TO 45 MINUTES OF 45 MINUTES A WEEK A FEW YEARS AGO.

THAT'S BELOW THE STATE STANDARDS OF 60 MINUTES A WEEK, AND WE HAVE NOT GOTTEN IT BACK.

IF WE LET THIS GO THROUGH, I ANTICIPATE THE SAME WILL BE TRUE WITH THESE CUTS.

I HAVE PERFORMED PROFESSIONALLY IN THE ORCHESTRA PITS FOR HUNDREDS OF SHOWS AS A WOODWIND DOUBLER. THIS PERFORMANCE WAS ON PAR OR BETTER THAN MANY OF THE HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY THEATER, OR EVEN SOME OF THE COLLEGE LEVEL PRODUCTIONS IN WHICH I'VE BEEN HIRED TO PERFORM.

THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT SHOULD BE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THEIR TEACHERS AND PROGRAMS FOR PUTTING THIS LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE TOGETHER. OUR TEACHERS DESERVE FULL CONTRACTS.

BUT IT'S BEEN LIKE SUCH AN ESSENTIAL PART OF MY LIFE, COMING THERE AND BONDING WITH ALL THESE AMAZING PEOPLE AND THESE AMAZING TEACHERS.

THEY'VE TAUGHT ME SO MUCH IN THE SHORT FEW. NOT EVEN A YEAR THAT I'VE BEEN HERE.

THEY'VE BEEN AN ESSENTIAL PART OF MY LIFE. AND I WOULD HAVE I WOULD BE VERY SAD TO HAVE TO GIVE THAT UP JUST FOR BUDGET CUTS.

AND THEN SHE STARTED DOING SKY SINGERS WITH MISS APPINGTON, AND SHE JOINED THIS MUSICAL.

AND SHE JUST LOVED IT. SHE TOTALLY FOUND HER SENSE OF COMMUNITY, AND IT MADE SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO HER.

SO PERSONALLY, FROM OUR FAMILY, WE WOULD BE REALLY SAD TO SEE ANY OF THE PROGRAMS CUT.

WHEN I ASKED THEM WHY THEY CHOSE CAMAS OUT OF MANY OPTIONS, THEY TOLD ME THAT OUR SCHOOL HAS A REPUTATION FOR MUSIC EXCELLENCE.

I THINK I LOST MY MICROPHONE, SO I JUST WANT TO REPEAT SINCE I GOT CUT OFF.

SO, WE HAVE A REPUTATION FOR MUSIC EXCELLENCE, AND WE HAVE TO TAKE PRIDE IN THAT AND CHERISH THAT AND KEEP THAT WE.

IT'S NAIVE TO THINK THAT CUTTING BACK ON THESE HOURS WOULD NOT AFFECT THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION.

IT WILL, AS IT SHOWS THAT EXTENSIVE MUSIC HOURS MAKE A DIFFERENCE COMPARED TO OTHER COMMUNITIES THAT ALREADY CUT BACK THEIR HOURS. ADDITIONALLY, THERE ARE DEEPER VALUES INHERENT IN MUSIC EDUCATION.

MUSIC FOSTERS COLLABORATION, COMPASSION, RESPECT, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, MUSIC TEACHES US TO LISTEN.

IT TEACHES US TO EMBRACE OUR HUMANITY. MUSIC IS A REMEDY FOR OUR FRAGMENTED REALITY BECAUSE IT CONNECTS PEOPLE DESPITE THEIR DIFFERING VIEWS. SO, WE NEED MUSIC MORE THAN EVER.

WHEN STUDENTS LEARN SONGS FROM VARIOUS CULTURES, WE SEND THE MESSAGE THAT WE VALUE AND RESPECT PEOPLE ON THE OTHER OUTSIDE OF OUR COMMUNITY. WHEN MUSIC STUDENTS PERFORM AT A RETIREMENT CENTER DURING THE HOLIDAYS.

IT SHOWS OUR COMMITMENT TO COMPASSION AND CONNECTION.

BOTH MY KIDS WERE ABLE TO TAKE PART IN THIS THANKS TO MR. EDMUNDSON, SO WE ARE NOT JUST ADVOCATING FOR AN ADDITIONAL CLASS, BUT WE ARE ASKING TO STAND BY THE HUMAN VALUES THAT MUSIC BRINGS TO ANY COMMUNITY. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. THANK YOU.

I'M SHARING THIS LETTER AS BOTH A TEACHER AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE LAST 12 YEARS AND A PARENT OF TWO STUDENTS IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START AS I HAVE MANY THOUGHTS, BUT I WILL ATTEMPT TO KEEP THIS FOCUSED ON MY MAIN TALKING POINTS.

CLASSES OF 38 ARE UNACCEPTABLE AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

WE ALREADY ARE THE MOST EFFICIENT SCHOOL IN THE DISTRICT IN REGARD TO DOLLARS SPENT PER STUDENT.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY APPALLING THAT WE WOULD MAKE CUTS SO DEEP THAT WE EXPECT CLASSES OF 38 ACROSS THE BOARD.

THAT IS NOT WHAT THE STATE FUNDS US FOR, ESPECIALLY IN LAB SCIENCES, WHICH IS WHAT I TEACH.

I LEFT CALIFORNIA IN 2013 AFTER THE STATE CHANGED THE LEGAL MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE TO 39 BECAUSE OF LACK OF FUNDING.

I SAW WHAT IT DID TO EDUCATION AND OUR ABILITY TO REACH STUDENTS.

MANY WERE LEFT BEHIND IN ALL ACADEMIC SUBJECTS.

OUR STATE FUNDING ISN'T NEARLY THAT BAD, SO WE NEED TO SHIFT OUR PRIORITIES TO THE CLASSROOM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY SOME OF THE HIGHEST PAID EMPLOYEES IN OUR DISTRICT ARE BEING ALLOWED TO RETIRE IN DECEMBER, RATHER AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. WHILE WE ARE TAKING TEACHERS FROM THE CLASSROOM AND MAKING CLASS SIZES SO EXTRAORDINARILY HIGH.

I UNDERSTAND WE NEED TO CUT EXPENSES, BUT NOT THE PRIORITIES BEING MADE BY THE DISTRICT.

WHO SHOULD KNOW WHAT THE COMMUNITY EXPECTS. MONEY SHOULD GO INTO KEEPING CLASS SIZES EFFECTIVE.

AT THE SUPERINTENDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING, DR.

ANZALONE SHARED HE DOESN'T PLAN ON ADDING ADDITIONAL SECTIONS, EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL PROBABLY BE WARRANTED UNTIL AFTER THE STUDENT NUMBER COUNT DAY IN OCTOBER. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I DON'T SEE HOW THAT FIXES THE PROBLEM AFTER I PUSH BACK.

HE NOW SAYS AN OCTOBER FIX IS THE WORST CASE SCENARIO.

BUT TO USE HIS TERMINOLOGY, IT IS OBVIOUS WE ARE NOW SWINGING TOO FAR INTO CUTS BEYOND WHAT IS REALISTIC AND DOABLE.

THE NECESSARY NUMBER OF CLASS SECTIONS NEED TO BE CREATED BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTS TO ACTUALLY FIX A PROBLEM.

ADDING A FEW SECTIONS AND TRYING TO REARRANGE SCHEDULES IN OCTOBER DOESN'T BENEFIT ANYONE, AND LIKELY WON'T FIX ANY PROBLEMS. IT DOESN'T VALUE THE STUDENT AND WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND EDUCATION.

THE CLASS SECTIONS NEED TO BE ADDED BEFORE SKYWARD POPULATES THE CLASSES TO PROVIDE RELIEF ACROSS THE BOARD.

YOU CAN'T JUST ADD A FEW SECTIONS AND THEN PUT STUDENTS IN THEM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, AND TRY TO RELIEVE HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES EVERYWHERE. IT WOULD EITHER BE A COMPLETE RESHUFFLING, NEGATING THE WORK DONE IN THE FIRST WEEKS OF SCHOOL, OR IT WON'T ACTUALLY IMPROVE NUMBERS AND REDUCE CLASS SIZES.

I DON'T THINK I REALLY BELIEVED WE WOULD MAKE SUCH DEEP CUTS UNTIL I FOUND OUT WE'RE LOSING NINE SECTIONS OF SCIENCE AT CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL.

THAT'S INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO ME, AS OUR CLASSES ARE QUITE FULL ALREADY AND WE ARE ALREADY SERVING THESE STUDENTS.

I UNDERSTAND IT'S NEGOTIATING YEAR, AND THAT THERE'S A PUSH TO CAUSE CHAOS BY CUTTING DEEPER THAN NEEDED.

I WISH IT WASN'T HAPPENING THIS WAY AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR STUDENTS, WHO ARE THE PURPOSE OF OUR WORK.

EITHER WAY, I THINK IT'S A MORAL QUESTION TO REALLY DIVE INTO THE SOLUTION BEING PRESENTED BY OUR DISTRICT.

NATALIE HAS AUTISM, SHE HAS HIGH ANXIETY, AND SHE HAS A LOT OF SENSORY PROCESSING CHALLENGES.

THAT MAKES CROWDED AND LOUD SPACES NEARLY UNBEARABLE FOR HER.

NATALIE SPENDS HER TIME AWAY FROM SCHOOL, PRETTY MUCH STAYING HOME BECAUSE SHE AVOIDS MOST ACTIVITIES DUE TO ALL OF THE SENSORY INPUT THAT OVERWHELMS HER. WE CHOSE ODYSSEY BECAUSE THE SCHOOL WAS SMALL.

IT WAS SEQUESTERED LESS NOISE AND COMMOTION. WE'RE VERY, VERY THANKFUL THAT ODYSSEY HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL SCHOOL FOR HER. THE TEACHERS THERE HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE.

SHE RAISED HER ENGLISH TEST SCORE BY 1,000% BETWEEN FALL AND WINTER THIS YEAR, AND HER MATH SCORE 170%. SHE IS DOING SO WELL AT ODYSSEY.

SHE IS SO HAPPY THERE. SHE'S JUST FOUND HER NICHE AND FOUND HER LITTLE SAFE, SAFE HAVEN AT ODYSSEY.

SO WE'RE VERY, VERY, VERY THANKFUL FOR THE SCHOOL AND THE AMAZING TEACHERS.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE IMPENDING MOVE HAS CAUSED QUITE A BIT OF ANXIETY FOR NATALIE, HER FRIENDS WHO MANY HAVE AUTISM AND ADHD. THEY GET OVERWHELMED VERY EASILY BY DISRUPTIONS IN ROUTINE, AND SENSORY OVERLOAD CAN BE DISTRESSING TO THEM. THE STREAM OF NEW INFORMATION ABOUT THIS TRANSITION HAS BEEN PRETTY OVERWHELMING FOR THESE KIDS THIS YEAR.

SO WE'VE HAD A LOT OF DISCUSSIONS WITH OUR FAMILY AND WITH NATALIE AND HER FRIENDS TO JUST KIND OF HELP THEM GET THROUGH ALL OF THIS.

BUT THE HARDEST PART TO SWALLOW HAS BEEN LEARNING THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT WON'T BE RETURNING NEXT YEAR DUE TO LOSING THEIR POSITIONS.

SOME OF THOSE STAFF HAVE BEEN AT PBL FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, AND THE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN JUST SAD AND UPSET.

THAT NATALIE HAS FELT ABANDONED. THEY STAGED A WALKOUT BACK IN FEBRUARY OVER PRINCIPAL NICOLE O'ROURKE LOSING HER JOB. SHE'S BEEN A KEY FIGURE AT ODYSSEY.

NATALIE'S FAVORITE HEALTH FIT TEACHER, MR. STEINER BAILEY, I UNDERSTAND, HAS ALSO LOST A POSITION, AS WELL AS KOBE MOORE, HER ART TEACHER. BOTH OF THOSE TEACHERS ARE AMAZING.
