DURING THE PROCESS THROUGHOUT LAST YEAR, WE HAVE TWO DIFFERENT ADVISORY STRUCTURES. WE HAVE WHAT'S CALLED A PROGRAM ADVISORY, SO THOSE ARE THE SPECIFIC AREAS. IN OUR DISTRICT, WE HAVE THOSE IN STEM, SKILLED AND TECHNICAL, BUSINESS AND MARKETING, HEALTH SCIENCES, AND FAMILY CONSUMER SCIENCES. WE DO NOT HAVE AN AGRICULTURE PROGRAM OFFERING CURRENTLY IN THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT. OFTENTIMES, THAT'S TRUE IN AREAS. CTE PROGRAMS REFLECT THE INDUSTRY THAT THEY SERVE IN THE INDUSTRIES AROUND US. WE DO HAVE SOME AGRICULTURE AND CAMAS, BUT VERY SMALL AND NOT AS MUCH AS WE ONCE HAD. REALLY, OVER THE LAST 20 OR 30 YEARS, IT'S BEEN A SKILLED AND TECHNICAL STEM AREA. THESE AREAS ARE CURRICULUM, ACADEMIC STANDARDS, INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, FACILITIES, STUDENT LEADERSHIP. THAT'S LIKE CLUBS AND EXTENDED LEARNING. I'LL TALK ABOUT THAT QUITE A BIT. I WAS ON A LEGISLATIVE CALL ON THURSDAY. GOOD NEWS FOR CTE IS THAT IN THE CURRENT FEDERAL BUDGET, THAT IS BEING NEGOTIATED, I'LL SAY RIGHT NOW IN THE OTHER WASHINGTON, CTE WAS LEFT UNTOUCHED. IT MEANS WE'RE ONE OF THE FEW AREAS THAT WAS NOT REDUCED IN THE BUDGET PROPOSAL THAT'S RIGHT NOW SITTING IN CONGRESS. I FOUND, I THINK I'VE MENTIONED THIS BEFORE, BUT IT'S VERY BIPARTISAN BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATION. IT'S THE COMING TOGETHER OF BUSINESS INDUSTRY AND EDUCATION, WHICH IS ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT CTE. WE DON'T ANTICIPATE ANY SIGNIFICANT CARL PERKINS REDUCTIONS IN OUR BUDGET. OUR DISTRICT DOESN'T GET A LOT OF CARL PERKINS MONEY. IT'S PROBABLY LESS THAN A HALF OF A PERCENT OF THE OVERALL CTE DOLLARS WE GET. PART OF THAT IS REBUILDING THE STRENGTH OF OUR PROGRAM ADVISORIES. WE HAVE APPROACHED THE ADVISORY IN A REGIONAL FASHION THE LAST FEW YEARS, WHICH IS REALLY NICE. IT'S BROUGHT SOME RESOURCES TO OUR DISTRICT, ESPECIALLY IN THE SKILLED AND TECHNICAL AREA, AND IT ALSO HELPS TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO SOME OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS REGIONALLY. I CAN GIVE A COUPLE OF REALLY SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. THERE'S A CONSTRUCTION ADVISORY THAT WAS CREATED OUT OF THAT. WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO'VE GONE NOW FOR THREE YEARS IN A ROW TO A HIRING EVENT AT THE END OF THE YEAR, A GRADE 13 HIRING EVENT. THE TINY TOOLBOXES WE'VE BUILT CAME OUT OF THAT REGIONAL ADVISORY. THAT'S THE BENEFIT OF IT. THE DRAWBACK IS YOU DON'T ALWAYS HAVE AS LOCAL OF A CONNECTION AS YOU MIGHT WANT. THIS YEAR, PART OF OUR GOAL IS TO INCLUDE MORE PARENTS, TRY AND CAST A WIDE NET OF "HEY, CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT OUR LOCAL ADVISORY STRUCTURE BY PARTICIPATING, BEING A GUEST SPEAKER, HOSTING A STUDENT TOUR, MAYBE AN INTERN." REALLY TRYING TO REFOCUS A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THE LOCAL APPROACH TO THE ADVISORY PROCESS. WE'RE NOT GOING TO DISCONNECT FROM THE REGIONAL. IT'S BEEN VERY BENEFICIAL TO OUR DISTRICT, AND IT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS WILL GRADUATE AND HOPEFULLY WORK SOMEWHERE IN CLARK COUNTY. THAT GROUP REPRESENTS ALL OF CLARK COUNTY. THAT PARENT INVOLVEMENT, THOUGH, IS SOMETHING THAT WE'LL BE SENDING OUT SOME COMMUNICATION, TRYING TO RECRUIT PARENTS TO JOIN US IN OUR ADVISORY PROCESS. WE DO HAVE EXTREMELY STRONG PARENTAL PARTICIPATION IN WHAT WE CALL OUR CTSOS, CURRENT TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS LIKE DECA, SKILLS USA, FIRST ROBOTICS, SCIENCE OLYMPIAD. WE HAVE TONS OF PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN THOSE ACTIVITIES, BUT CONTINUING SOME OF THE CLASSROOM WORK AS WELL. THE OTHER ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS AND EQUIVALENCY CREDIT. WHEN I FIRST CAME TO CAMAS IN 2012, WE HAD 16 ARTICULATIONS WITH CLARK, AND NOW WE HAVE FOUR. TRYING TO REBUILD THAT WILL BE PART OF THE GOAL, AND THERE'S A LOT OF REASONS FOR THAT; PART OF IT IS COLLEGE IN HIGH SCHOOL. I JUST HAD A MEETING LAST WEEK WITH A REPRESENTATIVE FROM CLARK, AND THEY ARE INTERESTED IN TRYING TO REBUILD THE CTE ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS, WHICH WE WILL. THE OTHER THING WE'VE DONE IS WE HAVE A COUPLE OF PARTNERSHIPS WITH PERRY TECHNICAL INSTITUTE, WHICH IS REALLY AWESOME. WE'VE HAD SOME STUDENTS GO THERE. THEY'RE UNIQUE ARTICULATIONS. NORMALLY, AN ARTICULATION WOULD BE, HEY, I TAKE A CLASS, AND I GET THREE CREDITS AT CLARK FOR THAT CLASS. PERRY TECH SAID, IF THEY FINISH THE CLASS, THEY GET A $4,000 SCHOLARSHIP, BASICALLY A WAIVER OF ANOTHER CLASS ON THEIR CAMPUS. IT'S PRETTY UNIQUE, AND IT'S BEEN PRETTY COOL. WE'VE HAD A FEW DIFFERENT STUDENTS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. WE'LL CONTINUE TO EXPLORE SOME OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES. A LOT OF OUR REGIONAL PARTNERS, SO VANCOUVER AND EVERGREEN, BATTLE GROUND. THEY'VE PARTNERED WITH LCC FOR ARTICULATION. WE'RE FAR ENOUGH AWAY WHERE WHEN I'VE PULLED OR ASKED TEACHERS TO PULL STUDENTS, I'M NOT GOING TO LCC. IT'S TOO FAR AWAY. I'M GOING TO LIVE AT HOME AND GO TO CLARK. WE NEED TO REALLY WORK ON THAT RELATIONSHIP AND CONTINUE TO REBUILD THE ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS. A FAMILY HEALTH, SPORTS, MEDICINE, WE OFFER FIRST AID CPR, WHICH IS CONSIDERED AN INDUSTRY CERTIFICATION. IT'S REALLY THAT STARTER FOR ANY MEDICAL CAREER. WE OFFER BLS, BASIC LIFESAVING COURSE, AND WE ALSO OFFER FOOD HANDLERS CARD AND EVERY ONE OF OUR FOODS CLASSES. THOSE ARE REALLY BASIC CERTIFICATIONS. WE'VE STARTED TO ADD SOME CAD PARTNERSHIPS.
