IT'S WENT OFF WITHOUT A HITCH. AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, ODYSSEY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS MOVED INTO OUR BUILDING THIS YEAR. IN TERMS OF INTEGRATION, EVERYTHING IS RUNNING PRETTY MOSTLY SMOOTHLY. IT'S DEFINITELY A LITTLE NOISIER. BUT AMID THE BUDGET CUT THINGS, THAT'S NOT OUR BIGGEST ISSUE THAT WE'RE HAVING. I WOULD SAY THERE ARE CONCERNS ABOUT THE CLASS SIZES IN ALMOST EVERY CLASS WE HAVE LIKE 0 OPEN SEATS. MOST NOTABLY OUR PHYSICS CLASS, WHICH IS A REQUIRED CLASS FOR A LOT OF SENIORS AND JUNIORS. IT HAS 44 STUDENTS IN 1 CLASS. SO AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, IT'S PRETTY LOUD AND CHAOTIC. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH CHAIRS IN THE ROOM, SO PEOPLE HAVE TO SIT ON, LIKE THE BAR AREA OR IN LIKE OTHER CHAIRS THAT THEY'VE BROUGHT INTO THE ROOM, WHICH IS A CONCERN. MORE IMPORTANTLY I THINK THE AMOUNT OF INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT THAT STUDENTS CAN GET FROM THEIR TEACHER IS GREATLY DIMINISHED. SO PROJECT BASED LEARNING RELIES A LOT ON 1 ON 1 TIME WITH STAFF TO HELP YOU NOT ONLY GET SUPPORT, BUT REALLY BUILD A MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND RESPECT. BUT EVEN WITH THESE CHALLENGES, THE 1ST FEW WEEKS OF SCHOOL HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT, AND I'M VERY EXCITED TO SEE HOW OUR CAMPUS GROWS AND DEVELOPS WITH OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL FRIENDS WITH US HI, I'M DHS IS STARTING SENIOR PARKING FOR THE 1ST TIME NEXT MONTH. FOR THE 1ST TIME, NEXT MONTH SENIORS WILL GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO PERSONALIZE THEIR EXCLUSIVE PARKING SPOT. WE'VE HAD MUCH DELIBERATION OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS ON THE LOGISTICS OF THE EVENT, ESPECIALLY SURROUNDING COST, GIVEN OUR SCHOOL'S LIMITED ASB BUDGET. WE HOPE TO PROVIDE PAINT AND SUPPLIES FOR ALL THE STUDENTS WHO WISH TO PARTICIPATE, BUT ULTIMATELY DECIDED IT WAS NOT WITHIN OUR MEANS TO DO SO. HOWEVER, WITH THE MORE LIMITED SUPPLIES WE PROVIDE AND A SMALL $5 FEE TO THE PARTICIPATING STUDENTS, WE SHOULD MANAGE TO BREAK EVEN ON SENIOR PARKING. WITH THESE BUDGETARY CONSTRAINTS AND OTHER PLANS SOLIDIFIED, WE EXPECT TO HAVE A FUN EVENT STARTING NEXT MONTH. SO TODAY, A GROUP OF ADVANCED STUDENTS FROM DISCOVERY WERE INVITED TO NLIGHTS 25TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT, ALONG WITH OUR VERY OWN SENATOR PATTY MURRAY. SO THAT WAS VERY EXCITING. STUDENTS GOT THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS OF THE LASERS MADE BY OUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS, AS WELL AS THEIR DEDICATION TO EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION. NLIGHT ANNOUNCED PLANS FOR A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM AT DISCOVERY. SO HAVING, YOU KNOW, THE TOP IN THE INDUSTRY KIND OF HELPING OUR ADVANCED STUDENTS ESPECIALLY WITH STEM LEARNING, WHICH OUR SCHOOL IS VERY BIG ON. TONIGHT, I WANT TO GIVE YOU YOUR NEW BUSINESS SERVICES DIRECTOR. A SUMMARY OF WHY THIS AGREEMENT IS A POOR DEAL FOR CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT. 1ST, THE FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS ARE STRIKING. USTA P&W, A PRIVATE OREGON CORPORATION, RECEIVES 30 YEARS OF EXCLUSIVE SURPLUS USE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL PROPERTY WHILE PAYING NO ONGOING RENT, NO UTILITIES, NO PROPERTY TAXES, NO PROFIT SHARE. 2ND, THERE'S A FAR SIMPLER AND MORE AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE FOR COVERING THE COURTS THAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH A PAVILION STYLE ROOF, ESSENTIALLY A LARGE OPEN COVER WITHOUT THE EXPENSIVE SITE, MODIFICATIONS OF A TENNIS CENTER, WITHOUT THE ADDED TRAFFIC AND SECURITY RISK. FROM OPENING THE CAMPUS TO THE PUBLIC, A PAVILION ACHIEVES THE SAME CORE GOAL AT A FRACTION OF THE COST WITHOUT SHIFTING NEW LIABILITIES ONTO THE DISTRICT. A PAVILION OFFERS COVERED SPACE TO BE USED BY THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY IN A NUMBER OF WAYS. 3RD, COMMUNITY ACCESS IS AT STAKE. CAMAS TAXPAYERS PAID FOR THE LAND AND PAID TO BUILD THE EXISTING COURTS. YET, UNDER THIS AGREEMENT, THE COMMUNITY WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO USE THE COURTS FREELY ON WEEKENDS AND SUMMERS BECAUSE USTA WILL HAVE EXCLUSIVE CONTROL. PUBLIC PROPERTY SHOULD NOT BE LOCKED AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC FOR THE PRIMARY BENEFIT OF A SINGLE OUTSIDE PARTY. FINALLY, EXCLUSIVITY HARMS OUR STUDENT ATHLETES. COLLEGIATE TENNIS PROGRAMS INCREASINGLY RELY ON UTR. UNIVERSAL TENNIS RATING AS THEIR RECRUITING TOOL. A 30 YEAR EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH USTA WILL SHUT OUT LOCAL UTR EVENTS, NARROWING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAMAS ATHLETES. AT ITS CORE, THE AGREEMENT DOES NOT ALIGN WITH THE MISSION OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT TO SERVE ALL STUDENTS AND THE BROADER COMMUNITY EQUITABLY. A BETTER PATH EXISTS.
