I TALKED TO A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT COLLEGE COACHES THAT WERE VERY INTERESTED IN HIM, MOSTLY FOR RUNNING, BUT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WE SO IMPRESSED THAT HE WAS A FANTASTIC STUDENT. THAT WAS SUPER IMPRESSIVE. WE HAVE LOTS OF PICTURES OF YOU RUNNING. OBVIOUSLY, YOU'RE A VERY STRONG RUNNER. CAMAS HAS THIS SUPER BIG HISTORY OF BEING A RUNNING PROGRAM. WE HAD 140 ATHLETES ON OUR TEAM THIS YEAR. WE HAVE A MASSIVE TEAM, BUT WE ALSO JUST HAVE THIS LARGE HISTORY OF HAVING FANTASTIC RUNNERS THAT HAS GONE ON FOR A SUPER LONG TIME. WE'VE HAD ATHLETES THAT HAVE COME OUT OF OUR PROGRAM THAT HAVE GONE DIRECTLY AND RUN PROFESSIONALLY FOR NIKE. WE'VE HAD ATHLETES THAT HAVE GONE ON AND RUN REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES, AND THIS IS YOUR FUTURE TEAMMATE WAS ABSOLUTELY REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES. REALLY, REALLY PROUD HISTORY OF FANTASTIC RUNNING IN THIS AREA. COHEN BUTLER HAS DEMOLISHED THE SCHOOL RECORDS ACROSS THE BOARD, AND HE STILL HAS ONE TRACK SEASON LEFT. I JUST WANT TO SAY FANTASTIC RUNNER. BUT MORE IMPORTANT THAN ACADEMICS AND MORE IMPORTANT THAN ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THIS IS A HUMAN THAT IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AS A PERSON. ON THE ORIENTATION DAY, SIX GRADERS GET ASSIGNED TO TWO WEB LEADERS AS LONG WITH A GROUP OF NEW STUDENTS THAT THEY'VE NEVER MET BEFORE FROM DIFFERENT SCHOOLS, AND WE HELP THEM TO SOCIALIZE AND GET MORE COMFORTABLE WITH EACH OTHER. THEN WE TAKE THEM FOR A FUN TOUR AND TO GET THEM MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE SCHOOL. THEY THEN GET TO EXPERIENCE WHAT A DAY IS LIKE AT SKYRIDGE, AND THEY GET TO EAT LUNCH AND FIND THEIR CLASSES WITH THE WEB LEADERS ASSISTING THEM. >> LIKE CARINA SAID, THE ORIENTATION IS LIKE THE KICK OFF OF WEB. IT'S THE BIG PART. IT'S LIKE THE TRANSITION FOR THE SIXTH GRADERS. THEY GET TO MEET NEW PEOPLE. OF COURSE, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THEM COMPARED TO HIGH SCHOOLERS, FOR EXAMPLE, BECAUSE HIGH SCHOOLERS WANT MORE INDEPENDENCE. WHEREAS MIDDLE SCHOOLERS ARE COMING FROM ELEMENTARY, AND THEY PROBABLY FEEL LIKE THERE'S A BIT OF A POWER IMBALANCE BETWEEN THEM AND THE EIGHTH GRADERS. IT'S JUST GOOD TO LET THEM KNOW THAT THE EIGHTH GRADERS ARE HERE TO HELP THEM AND HERE TO SUPPORT THEM AND JUST HELP GUIDE THEM. >> CURRENTLY, WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE AT WEB IS FUN WIN ACTIVITIES AND LUNCHES. HERE AT WEB, WE HAVE WIN ACTIVITIES FOR THE SIXTH GRADERS, WHICH HELPS THEM THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX. DURING LUNCH, WE ASKED THEM ABOUT PERSONAL EXPERIENCES THEY HAVE FACED SO FAR IN SIXTH GRADE. WE JUST GET TO TALK TO THEM AND SEE HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL SO FAR. THEN ACTIVITIES, WE LET THEM CHOOSE THEIR OWN ADVENTURES. FOR EXAMPLE, DURING HALLOWEEN, WE HAD MUMMY WRAPPING AND AS ONE OF THE OPTIONS AND WE HAD TRIVIA. THAT HELPED THEM THINK CREATIVELY ON HOW TO PROBLEM SOLVE AND DO THE CHALLENGES THAT WE TOLD THEM TO. I WANTED TO TAKE THAT EXTRA STEP TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT WAS LIKE FOR HIM. I DID MY INTERNSHIP AT FIRCREST BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WITH AINSLIE SILVA, AND WE'RE ESSENTIALLY JUST ANSWERING THE QUESTION OF, HOW DOES TECHNOLOGY IMPACT ADHD TEENS DIFFERENTLY THAN A NEUROTYPICAL TEEN? MY FIRST METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION WAS A SURVEY. I HAD QUESTIONS SUCH AS, IS IT DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO DISENGAGE FROM SCREENS? DO YOU NOTICE A CHANGE IN YOUR MENTAL STATE ON A DAY WHEN YOU DON'T VIEW SCREENS? QUESTIONS LIKE THAT, AND I WOULD JUST PUT A QR CODE ON A FLYER AS SEEN THERE AND JUST SEND IT OUT THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. HOWEVER, UNFORTUNATELY, TEENAGERS DON'T REALLY VOLUNTARILY FILL OUT SURVEYS. I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET VERY MANY RESPONSES. I HAD TO COME UP WITH A PLAN B. HOWEVER, THIS PLAN ACTUALLY ENDED UP WORKING OUT A LOT BETTER. IT WAS A ONE ON ONE ANONYMOUS INTERVIEW PROCESS. I USED SOCIAL MEDIA, ANY CONNECTIONS I HAD TO REACH OUT TO PEOPLE AND SCHEDULE INTERVIEWS WITH THEM. I INTERVIEWED ADHD TEENS AS WELL AS NON ADHD TEENS. WITH THIS, I WAS ABLE TO GET MORE OF THAT PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THEM THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN WITH THE SURVEY. WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS AND I'M SURE WE ALL KNOW THAT MOST TEENS ADHD OR NEUROTYPICAL STRUGGLE WITH NEGATIVE IMPACTS FROM SCREEN USE. HOWEVER, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ADHD TEENS AND THE NEUROTYPICAL TEENS IS THAT THE ADHD TEENS HAVE A HARDER TIME REGULATING THEIR OWN SCREEN USE. THEY BENEFIT FROM THAT PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT, WHETHER IT'S CREATING A SCREEN TIME LIMIT OR CREATING BOUNDARIES WITH WHAT THEY DO ON THEIR SCREENS. I DECIDED TO ALSO SURVEY PARENTS OF THE ADHD CHILDREN TO SEE WHAT IT WAS LIKE FOR THEM TO CREATE THOSE REGULATIONS. THE MAJORITY OF THEM REPORTED THAT IT WAS VERY CHALLENGING. I ENDED UP USING THE DATA FROM MY INTERVIEWS TO WRITE A SHORT LITTLE BLOG, JUST HIGHLIGHTING FIVE QUICK TIPS ON HOW TO BETTER REGULATE AND SUCCESSFULLY REGULATE YOUR CHILD SCREEN USE, WHICH IS LINKED WITH THE QR CODE BELOW. THAT WAS A BASIC OVERVIEW OF MY PROJECT. NOW ASIDE FROM THAT, I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT MY MST EXPERIENCE. JOINING MST HAS REALLY BEEN ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE. I STILL REMEMBER FRESHMAN YEAR. I WAS EXTREMELY NERVOUS. I WAS PUT INTO THIS ROOM WITH A BUNCH OF SMART PEOPLE. IT WAS VERY INTIMIDATING. BUT ONCE I GOT OVER THAT INITIAL FEAR OF IT, I REALLY WAS ABLE TO SEE THE VALUE IN IT. I WAS ABLE TO LEARN RESEARCH SKILLS, PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS, TEAMWORK SKILLS, ALL OF THE ABOVE. I WOULD SAY MY MAIN TAKEAWAY WITH THIS WAS LEARNING THAT IT'S OKAY TO STRUGGLE. I USED TO BE VERY AMBITIOUS IN THE WAY THAT I DIDN'T WANT ANYTHING TO BE HARD. I WANTED TO JUST UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING RIGHT AWAY. I LEARNED THAT THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE AT ALL, BUT ALSO IT'S OKAY. IT'S OKAY TO GO TO YOUR CLASSMATES WHEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON IN BIO OR TO STRUGGLE WRITING YOUR LIT REVIEW. I WOULD SAY THAT'S MY MAIN TAKEAWAY FROM THE PROGRAM. ASIDE FROM MST CREATING A VERY ADVANCED ACADEMIC SETTING FOR STUDENTS, THEY ALSO PUT A LOT OF FOCUS ON THEIR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE DONE EVENTS LIKE THE MST OVERNIGHTER AND MST BARBECUE. SOME PRIVATE COMPANIES DO ASK FOR THAT BEFORE THE FISCAL YEAR END. THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WE DO ASK FOR YOU TO CONSIDER THIS SO EARLY ON. THANK YOU FOR THAT. A COUPLE OF THINGS. EVERY YEAR, WE PUT THIS OUT TO ALL OF OUR BARGAINING GROUPS. THIS YEAR, WE ACTUALLY PUT FOUR OPTIONS OUT THERE AND VARIOUS START TIMES. UNANIMOUSLY AMONGST ALL OF OUR BARGAINING GROUPS, OPTION A, WHICH IS PRESENTED TO YOU TONIGHT, IS COMING FORWARD. EVEN THOUGH I KNOW LAST MONTH, WE DID HAVE A FEW TEACHERS COME AND MADE SOME INCREDIBLE POINTS AROUND SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT OPTIONS A AND B, POTENTIALLY EVEN C AND D, BROUGHT FORWARD, AND SPECIFICALLY AROUND THE EARLY START DATE BEFORE LABOR DAY. THIS COMING YEAR, AS YOU KNOW, LABOR DAY FALLS RATHER LATE, SO IT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO HAVE EVEN CONSIDERATION TO START AFTER LABOR DAY. THAT WOULD HAVE MEANT SEPTEMBER 8 START DATE, AND THAT WOULD HAVE PUSHED US WELL INTO LATE JUNE. THAT WAS NOT IN CONSIDERATION THIS YEAR. HOWEVER, WE LOOKED AT SOME OTHER STAGGERED START DATES. BUT TWO THINGS WE CAME BACK TO IS ONE, THE WORK THAT OUR CAC DID BACK IN 22-23, THEY, AS YOU KNOW, SPENT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR WITH SOME OTHER PROJECTS, BUT PRIMARILY LOOKING AT A BALANCED CALENDAR, LOOKING AT WAYS TO PROVIDE OUR FAMILIES MORE TIME TOGETHER, WHETHER THAT WAS AROUND THANKSGIVING OR IN A MID WINTER BREAK IN FEBRUARY. THAT CAME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT WE REALLY WANTED TO PROVIDE THAT GROUP'S WORK THE RESPECT IT DESERVES, BUT ALSO SOME TIME TO SEE HOW THESE BREAKS REALLY WORK AND COLLECT SOME TRUE DATA. IF WE WENT AWAY FROM THAT FOR 26-27, THAT WOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED US TO EVEN SEE HOW THIS FEBRUARY BREAK WORKED FOR FAMILY. THAT WAS ONE. THE OTHER THING THAT WE LOOKED INTO, AND WE WANTED TO VALUE SEVERAL OF THE COMMENTS THAT OUR TEACHERS MADE LAST MONTH, WAS AROUND ATTENDANCE. OUR TEAM TOOK A DIVE INTO ATTENDANCE RATES WHEN WE STARTED EARLY AS OPPOSED TO AFTER LABOR DAY. THEY WEREN'T WRONG NECESSARILY. THERE WAS DEFINITELY A SPIKE IN ABSENTEEISM WHEN WE STARTED EARLIER THIS YEAR, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. THE REST OF THE WEEK IMPROVED. HOWEVER, ONE OF THE THINGS WE NOTICED WAS AROUND THE WEEKEND, SO WHETHER IT WAS LABOR DAY WEEKEND OR EVEN THAT FIRST WEEKEND OF SCHOOL, ATTENDANCE REALLY DROPPED ON EITHER THE FRIDAY AND OR THE MONDAY. OUR FAMILIES DEFINITELY TAKE THREE-DAY WEEKENDS, FOUR-DAY WEEKENDS, NO MATTER WHEN WE START. I THINK A LOT OF IT IS, WE'RE NOT READY FOR SUMMER TO END, AND THE WEATHER IS SO BEAUTIFUL. I DO WANT TO GIVE CREDENCE TO THE ATTENDANCE ISSUE. HOWEVER, IT SHOULDN'T NECESSARILY BE THE DRIVING FACTOR JUST BECAUSE WE SEE SPIKES IN ABSENTEEISM, NO MATTER WHEN WE STARTED HISTORICALLY. I JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT WE TOOK THE TIME CHACEY ASKED ME TO LOOK INTO THAT, AND WE DID. I CAN GIVE YOU A MORE DETAILED ATTENDANCE REPORT IF YOU LIKE, BUT THAT'S A HIGH-LEVEL RESPONSE. OUTSIDE OF THE ATTENDANCE, I DO WANT TO ALSO REMIND YOU THAT CAC DID DO A LOT OF THIS WORK. THEY DUG INTO SOME RESEARCH AROUND MORE OF A BALANCED CALENDAR. THAT DEFINITELY WAS REFLECTED IN OUR NEXT YEAR'S GROUP OF SAC STUDENTS. AS WE HAVE EXPANDED THE TYPES OF PEOPLE AND THE GROUPS THAT COME TO THE CONFERENCE, WE HAVE DEFINITELY SEEN AN EXPANSION OF THE GROUPS WE HAVE IN SAC. NOW, WE SEE PEOPLE FROM EVERY CLUB AND EVERY ASB. IT'S REALLY INTERESTING TO HEAR ALL THOSE DIFFERENT VIEWS AND PERSONALITIES BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT STARTING OUT AS A SMALL LITTLE GROUP AND NOW WE DO.
