WE HAVE A COUPLE OF STUDENT REPORTS.

FIRST, WE'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM OUR ROBOTICS TEAM, AND COACH BRUCE WHITEFIELD IS GOING TO LET US KNOW WHO'S COMING ON UP.

I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE CAMAS WASHOUGAL AND HAWKINSON ROBOTICS TEAM.

WE ARE ACTUALLY A VERY UNIQUE ORGANIZATION BY AGREEMENT BETWEEN MULTIPLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT WE ARE ABLE TO SERVE THE ENTIRE REGION AROUND OUR VICINITY INTO OUR ROBOTICS TEAM.

WE HAD A VERY INTERESTING YEAR THIS YEAR.

BUT MAYBE I'D LIKE TO MENTION A FUNNY THING.

WHEN I LOOK AROUND THE ROOM, I WALK AROUND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, I SEE SIGNS OF THE ROBOTICS TEAM IN WAYS YOU DON'T REALLY RECOGNIZE.

ONE OF THEM IS THIS LITTLE ITEM OVER HERE IN THE CORNER, THAT LITTLE ROBOT OVER THERE.

I THINK IT WAS THREE YEARS AGO, THREE STUDENTS ON THE ROBOTICS TEAM WERE ASKED AT DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL IF THEY COULD DO SOME ANALYSIS ON USING ROBOTS TO CLEAN THE ROOMS AROUND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AS A HELP FOR THE FACILITIES' ORGANIZATION.

THEY SPENT A SEMESTER ANALYZING DIFFERENT ROBOTS AND MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS ON THAT.

THEN I WALK IN HERE, AND I SEE ONE OF THE ROBOTS BEING DEPLOYED.

I GET THESE LITTLE REMINDERS LIKE THAT, AND THEY DON'T ALWAYS HAVE THE TEAM LOGO ON IT.

[LAUGHTER] ANYWAY, I'M NOT HERE TO TALK TO YOU REALLY, I'M HERE TO INTRODUCE THE ROBOTICS TEAM.

ELLA, COME ON UP.

ONE OF THE THINGS WE ALWAYS TRIED TO TEACH IN OUR ROBOTICS IS GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM.

IT'S A HALLMARK OF THE PROGRAM INTERNATIONALLY.

WE WOULD TAKE IT RATE HEART, AND SO WE RECEIVE A LOT FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND IT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR US TO SAY THANKS.

>> WE CAME HERE TODAY TO SHOW OUR APPRECIATION FOR, BRUCE, TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT IMPACTS THE ROBOTICS TEAM HAS HAD ON THE DISTRICT, STUFF LIKE THE ROBOTS, BUT WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO ANY OF THIS WITHOUT YOUR HELP WITH GIVING US SPACE.

OUR BEAUTIFUL SHOP DOWN THE STREET WITH A TON OF BEAUTIFUL MACHINES, AND THEN ALLOW US TO LEARN AND DO REALLY ADVANCED MACHINING.

FOR EXAMPLE, NOT A LOT OF OTHER KIDS THEIR AGE GET, IT'S ALWAYS THE STEM NAUSEUM, JUST A COUPLE LITTLE WALK AWAY, GIVES US AN INCREDIBLE SPACE TO TEST OUR ROBOTS AND SHARE THE SPACE WITH OTHER TEAMS IN OUR COMMUNITY.

WITH THAT, WE'RE ABLE TO BUILD SKILLS LIKE TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP.

FOR EXAMPLE, I'M A PRESIDENT.

WITH OUR STUDENT LEADERSHIP, WE'RE ABLE TO LEARN SKILLS IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT NOT A LOT OF OTHER STUDENTS GET.

FIRST THING I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE IS THAT OUR LIBERTY SPS HAS CHOSEN A THEME.

THAT THEME IS BE THE DIFFERENCE.

WE REALLY WANT TO USE THIS TO OUR ADVANTAGE.

WE WANT TO BE THE DIFFERENCE IN KIDS LIVES AND WE WANT TO DO THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MATTER THE MOST.

ONE OF OUR SECOND THINGS IS OUR TRACK.

WE ARE ALMOST OVER TRACK, I ACTUALLY JUST GOT BACK FROM IT.

BUT RIGHT NOW, WE'RE UNDEFEATED AND MOST OF THE TIME WE'VE WON BY A LANDSLIDE, SO WE'RE DOING REALLY GOOD IN THAT.

OUR BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM IS NEARLY DONE, BUT THEY HAVE COMPETED IN THE NIKE INVITATIONAL AND JACK AND JILL TOURNAMENT.

ANOTHER THING FOR TRACK IS THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE BEEN SETTING RECORDS AND KEEP IMPROVING, LIKE KEATON JACKQUES, HE HAS A JUMP OF 5'7'' FOR HIGH JUMP, WHICH IS ONE OF OUR SCHOOL RECORDS.

ANOTHER THING IS OUR LIBERTY SB HAS PUT TOGETHER TWO SPIRIT DAYS SO FAR THIS YEAR.

THE FIRST ONE, IT WAS ON THURSDAY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THURSDAYS.

BASICALLY, WE LET KIDS DRESS UP IN WHATEVER THEY WANTED TO WEAR TO SCHOOL, AND THEN WE'RE ABLE TO TAKE PICTURES OF THEM, AND WE PRINTED OUT THE PHOTOS AND THEY'RE ABLE TO HANG THOSE IN THEIR LOCKERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO REMIND THEM OF THE FIRST-YEAR OF SCHOOL.

WE ALSO HAVE A SCHOOL COLORS SPIRIT DAY ON WEDNESDAY.

WE TRY TO MAKE THAT EARLY OF EACH WEDNESDAY WE HAVE EACH MONTH AND WE REALLY WANT TO TRY TO MAKE THOSE AT LEAST ONE EVERY MONTH WHERE STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED.

WE'RE ALSO TRACKING PATIENTS WHERE WE CAN SEE WHAT SPIRIT DAYS ARE DOING THE BEST.

ANOTHER THING IS THROUGH OUR RING NEWS, WE ARE HONORING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH BY DOING LOTS A YEAR, WHICH IS BASICALLY A BINGO GAME, AND WE'RE DRAWING A CARD EACH DAY ON THE RING NEWS, AND THE CLASS THAT GETS THE FIRST ROW WILL WIN A POPCORN PARTY, I'M PRETTY SURE.

ANOTHER THING IS OCTOBER WILL BRING TWO FUNDRAISERS TO LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

THE FIRST BEING OCTOBER, IT'S ONE OF THE LEAST DONATED.

SOCKS IS ONE OF THE LEAST DONATED ITEMS TO A HOMELESS SHELTERS, BUT IT'S ONE OF THE MOST REQUESTED BECAUSE WINTER COMING UP.

ANOTHER THING IS THE RIP CITY POPCORN FUNDRAISER.

KIDS WILL SELL POPCORN AND FOR EACH POPCORN THEY SELL, THEY'LL GET REWARDS.

THERE'S A BIG RAFFLE AT THE END AND IT'S REALLY FUN.

ANOTHER THING IS THAT OCTOBER IS ALSO DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH, AND WE REALLY WANT TO GET OUR STUDENTS TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF DISABILITIES THERE ARE AND HOW WE CAN HELP INCLUDE THOSE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY.

LASTLY, IS WE HAVE OUR FIRST UNITY WEEK IN OCTOBER.

UNITY WEEK IS DESIGNING TO BRING STUDENTS TOGETHER.

WE'RE TRYING TO BRING STUDENTS TOGETHER, THAT MAY BE DIFFERENT OR MAYBE THEY DON'T GET ALONG TOO WELL AND WE'RE TRYING TO BRING THEM TOGETHER USING THIS.

OUR THEME IS BE THE DIFFERENCE, AND WE WANT TO USE THAT TO OUR ADVANTAGE WHERE WE CAN BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER TO WHERE WE CAN GET.

TWO, HOW MANY MORE STUDENTS ARE IDEATING, ATTEMPTING OR COMMITTING SUICIDE THAN BEFORE THESE MEASURES WERE MANDATED.

I THINK THAT'S AT LEAST PLUS 20 PERCENT.

HOW MUCH INTELLECTUAL CAPACITY WAS LOST? 6.4 PERCENT FEWER STUDENTS MET ENGLISH AND LANGUAGE ARTS GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS, 370 MORE STUDENTS DID NOT MEET THE STANDARD.

10 PERCENT FEWER STUDENTS MET THE MATH GRADE LEVEL STANDARD.

OVER 500 MORE STUDENTS DIDN'T MEET THE MATH LEVEL OF STANDARD.

THEN ASK, WHAT WAS THE PROBABILITY OF A STUDENT COVID FATALITY IN THE CANVAS SCHOOL DISTRICT OVER THE PAST YEARS.

MY MATH USING THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH COVID DATA SAYS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 0 AND 0.000012.

WE'RE REALLY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT WHAT OUR STATE COUNT IS GOING TO BE IN OCTOBER.

WE WANTED TO JUST MAKE SURE THAT THE PUBLIC UNDERSTANDS THAT.

THERE'S STILL A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE DEALING WITH COVID, WHETHER IT'S THE VIRUS ITSELF OR JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, THE FINANCIAL REPERCUSSIONS, SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT COME ALONG WITH DEALING WITH THE PANDEMIC.

WE KNOW WE'RE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET, BUT WE'RE GETTING THERE AND SO WE'RE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT WHERE WE'RE GOING.

OUR COUNTY HEALTH OFFICIALS, OFFICIALS DID STATE THAT VACCINATIONS ARE STILL AVAILABLE, ACCESSIBLE FOR 5-11 YEARS OLD.

HE DID WANT THE PARENTS TO KNOW THAT.

RIGHT NOW CASES IN CLARK COUNTY, JUST UNDER 70 CASES FOR EVERY 100,000 RESIDENTS. THAT'S A GOOD NUMBER.

THE BLUEPRINT FORM THAT WAS USED IN 2022, LAST SPRING, IS THE SAME ONE THAT WILL BE USED IN THE UPCOMING SPRINGS AS WELL, FOR SMARTER BALANCED.

THE SCIENCE ASSESSMENT FOLLOWS THE SAME BLUEPRINT THAT WAS USED PRE-PANDEMIC.

ON SEPTEMBER 9TH, SUPERINTENDENT REYKDAL ISSUED A PUBLIC NEWS RELEASE AND THE TITLE OF THAT WAS, STATE TEST SCORES A PROMISING SIGNAL OF PANDEMIC RECOVERY.

IN IT, HE TALKED ABOUT THE ASSESSMENT SCORES FROM A STATE-LEVEL.

BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HE MENTIONED, AND I'LL JUST QUOTE HIM HERE, "THESE DATA ARE ENCOURAGING", SAID SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, CHRIS REYKDAL, "THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT COVID-19 SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

THE DISRUPTIONS OF REMOTE LEARNING, QUARANTINE, AND ISOLATION AND TRANSITIONING BACK IN PERSON AFTER PERIODS OF LEARNING REMOTELY ARE EVIDENT IN THE DECREASE IN PROFICIENCY FROM SPRING 2019 TO SPRING 2022.

HOWEVER, THE INCREDIBLE WORK OF OUR EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IS EVIDENCED IN THE RECOVERY WE ARE SEEING ACROSS GRADE LEVELS IN SUBJECTS." I USE THAT AS THE CONTEXT FOR THE NEXT DATA SCREENS THAT WILL SHOW YOU.

THIS FIRST DISPLAY IS CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT PERCENT PROFICIENT.

AND WHAT YOU SEE IS THE BLUE BAR WHICH REPRESENTS ASSESSMENT SCORES FROM THE SPRING OF 2019, WHAT WE WOULD SAY WAS PRE-PANDEMIC.

THE ORANGE BAR IS FALL OF 2021 RESULTS AND THE GRAY BAR IS SPRING OF 2022 RESULTS.

WHAT YOU SEE IN THE CASE OF BOTH ELA AND MATH IS THAT BECAUSE OF UNFINISHED LEARNING, WE SAW A DECREASE ACROSS BOTH ELA AND MATH FROM THE SPRING OF 2019 TO THE FALL OF 2021.

BUT WHAT YOU SEE IN THE SPRING OF 2022 IS THAT WE HAVE STARTED TO ENGAGE IN THAT ACCELERATION OR RECOVERY OF UNFINISHED LEARNING AS WE GO FORWARD.

IN SCIENCE, THIS IS THE ONE PLACE WHERE WE DIDN'T MATCH THE STATE'S TREND WHICH WE'LL TALK ABOUT IN JUST A MOMENT.

BUT WHAT YOU SEE IS THAT WE ACTUALLY HAD AN INCREASE FROM SPRING OF 2019 TO FALL OF 2021, AND THEN A SLIGHT DECREASE TO SPRING OF 2022, BUT STILL HIGHER THAN WAS ACHIEVED IN THE SPRING OF 2019.

THESE TWO GRAPHS SHOW CSD RESULTS ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE WITH THE STATE'S RESULTS ON THE RIGHT.

THE BARS ARE POSITIONED IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOU CAN COMPARE THE CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT RESULTS TO THE STATE RESULTS.

FOR EXAMPLE, YOU SEE AN ELA, THE BLUE BAR SPRING 2019 FOR CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS ABOUT 80 PERCENT.

YOU SEE THAT THE STATES FOR THAT SAME WINDOW IS ABOUT 60 PERCENT.

SO THERE'S A DIFFERENCE IN ACHIEVEMENT WITHIN THE STUDENTS IN CAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE STATE RESULTS FOR BOTH ELA AND MATH, THEY FOLLOW THE SAME PATTERN, THOUGH OUR RESULTS AGAIN ARE INCREASED IN TERMS OF THE PERCENT OF STUDENTS DEMONSTRATING PROFICIENCY.

THE STATE FOR SCIENCE ACTUALLY SHOWS A DECREASE ACROSS ALL THREE OF THOSE WINDOWS WHERE WE SHOWED AN INCREASE AND THEN A SLIGHT DECREASE BUT STILL ABOVE.

GENERALLY FOLLOWING THE STATE'S TRENDS AS WE GO.

THE OTHER WAY THAT WE LOOK AT THIS DATA IS TO LOOK AT THE GROUPS OF STUDENTS SERVE THROUGH DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND ALSO BY DEMOGRAPHIC IDENTITY MARKERS SUCH AS RACE AND ETHNICITY, GENDER, AND SO ON.

I HAVE JUST A FEW SLIDES TO SHOW YOU KNOWING THAT THESE ARE JUST SOME THAT WE LOOK AT.

THERE ARE MANY MORE THAT OUR TEAMS ARE LOOKING AT TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT WHERE ARE WE HAVE STUDENT GROUPS THAT WE NEED TO ATTEND TO IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THEIR LEARNING IN A DIFFERENT AND BETTER WAY.

IN OUR CONTINUED FOCUS ON EQUITY, WHAT YOU SEE HERE IS SCIENCE, THEN ELA AND MATH, AND WHAT YOU SEE IS PROGRAM MARKERS.

STUDENTS WHO ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS AND THEN THE COMPARATOR GROUP IS STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT SCIENCE, 30 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS MET PROFICIENCY IN SCIENCE FOR THE SPRING 2022 WINDOW.

WHEREAS 70.5 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT SERVED THROUGH THE NOW MULTILINGUAL PROGRAM ACHIEVED PROFICIENCY IN THAT SAME.

YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE SOME DIFFERENCES IN THE ACHIEVEMENT BASED ON PROGRAM SERVICE GROUPS.

AGAIN, OUR CONTENTION AND BELIEF IS THAT WE CAN ELIMINATE THOSE ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY GAPS BY FOCUSING VERY SPECIFICALLY ON WHAT EACH STUDENT NEEDS IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO LEARN AND SUCCEED IN THEIR GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS.

I ALWAYS GO TO THE DEFINITION THAT ELENA AGUILAR TALKS ABOUT WHEN SHE TALKS ABOUT EQUITY, WHICH IS THAT EVERY STUDENT, EACH STUDENT GETS WHAT THEY NEED IN ORDER TO SUCCEED.

THAT REALLY IS OUR FOCUS, IS UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT IS THAT WE HAVE CURRENTLY AND WHAT IT IS THAT WE NEED IN ORDER TO BETTER SERVE EACH OF OUR STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF THE PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT THEM IN SCHOOLS.

THIS IS ANOTHER SLIDE THAT SHOWS THE SAME DATA, ELA, MATH, AND SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT BY RACE AND ETHNICITY.

AGAIN, EXAMINING THIS FOR WHERE ARE WE ABLE TO MEET STUDENT NEEDS AND WHERE HAVE WE NOT YET BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT? HOW DO WE EXAMINE OUR PRACTICES AND STRUCTURES IN ORDER TO DO SO BETTER? ONE OF THE THINGS WITH THE STATE ASSESSMENT, AS YOU KNOW, IS THAT IT'S BEEN CALLED IN THE PAST, A HIGH-STAKES ASSESSMENT LIKE IT'S ONE MEASURE OF WHAT IT IS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING AND HOW THEY'RE PERFORMING ACCORDING TO GRADE-LEVEL STANDARDS.

ONE OF THE CAUTIONS THAT'S ALWAYS GIVEN WITH STATE ASSESSMENTS IS THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AT MULTIPLE MEASURES IN ORDER TO FULLY UNDERSTAND WHERE STUDENTS ARE SUCCEEDING AND WHERE WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO ADDRESS THEIR NEEDS IN A BETTER WAY.

SOME OF THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING THIS YEAR AS WE CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON RECOVERY AND ALSO ACCELERATION, WHICH AGAIN DOES NOT MEAN FASTER, IT MEANS A VERY FOCUSED LOOK AT WHAT ARE THE PRIORITY STANDARDS IN EACH OF OUR CONTENT TO AREAS IN ORDER TO FOCUS PRECISELY ON THOSE, IN ORDER TO AGAIN HELP STUDENTS BE SUCCESSFUL.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING NOW IS THAT FOCUS ON PRIORITY STANDARDS.

ALSO REALLY DIGGING MORE INTO OUR INTERIM AND BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT TELL US ALONG THE WAY IF STUDENTS ARE GROWING IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY WILL MEET GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS.

EXAMPLES OF THAT WOULD BE DIBBLES, M-CLASS, AMPLIFY, ALL THE SAME THING AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL FOR LITERACY AND ALSO I-READY AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL FOR READING AND MATH.

REALLY LEVERAGING WHAT IS IT THAT THOSE ASSESSMENTS TELL US ABOUT CHANGES WE CAN MAKE NOW IN ORDER TO BETTER SERVE OUR STUDENTS.

THEN FINALLY, YOU KNOW THAT ONE OF THE PEOPLE WE HIRED RECENTLY, SHEREE GOMEZ CLARK, IS FOCUSING ON MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS, MTSS FOR SHORT, AGAIN, BECAUSE WE DO LOVE ACRONYMS AND MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS BASICALLY TELL US THAT MOST STUDENTS LEARNING NEEDS SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE SERVED IN WHAT'S CALLED TIER 1 OR CORE CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION.

THEN WE BUILD TIER 2 AND TIER 3 INTERVENTIONS THAT ARE THOSE ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED MORE OR DIFFERENT.

AGAIN, THE INTENTION IS THAT THE SYSTEM WORKS TOGETHER IN SUCH A WAY THAT WE'RE ABLE TO MEET STUDENTS' NEEDS BETTER.

WE DO HAVE ONE MORE YEAR OF THE GRANT, BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET THROUGH HOSPI, SO WE HAVE ANOTHER YEAR OF FULL SUMMER SCHOOL.

I WANTED TO WALK THROUGH [NOISE] SOME OF THAT WITH YOU AND THEN GO OVER SOME OF THE UPDATES.

THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR THAT I'VE BEEN REALLY INVOLVED WITH SUMMER SCHOOL.

IT'S CERTAINLY AN AMAZING TEAM TO WORK WITH.

WE HAD A LOT OF TEACHERS, PEOPLE FROM ALL THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS INVOLVED.

TRANSPORTATION OF FOOD, AND SO IT WAS A TEAM EFFORT TO GET ALL THESE KIDS GOING.

IT WAS A FOUR-WEEK PROGRAM, JUST AS A REMINDER, IN HIGH SCHOOL, HAD AN EXTRA WEEK TO FINISH SOME OTHER REMOTE CLASSES.

WHAT I THINK IS REALLY IMPORTANT IS AS WE CONTINUE THIS PROGRAM, THE VALUE OF FEEDBACK.

I THINK THAT'S ESSENTIAL IN SCHOOLS AS OUR MISSION IS TO SEE AND SERVE.

WE CAN'T SEE AND SERVE UNLESS WE'RE LISTENING.

AS A RESULT FROM LISTENING TO LAST YEAR, WE SHIFTED FROM A SIX-WEEK PROGRAM TO FOUR-WEEK PROGRAM AND SO A LOT OF THAT WAS THE MEAT THE STUDENT AND THE STAFF NEEDS.

WE'RE ABLE TO GET A FEW MORE STUDENTS IN BECAUSE IT WAS A BIT OF A SHORTER PROGRAM [NOISE].

SORRY, I HAD A COLD.

ANYWAY. WE ALSO ALIGN THE START AND END TIMES TO MAKE IT MORE FEASIBLE FOR FAMILIES THAT HAVE MULTIPLE STUDENTS.

ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH ALL STARTED AT THE SAME TIME.

THEN WE ADDED IN ORIGINAL CREDIT PE AND HEALTH.

WE ACTUALLY HAD 100 STUDENTS DO ORIGINAL CREDIT THIS YEAR WHICH I THINK WAS A REALLY GOOD ADDITION AND ALLOWED SOME SCHEDULING FLEXIBILITY.

SOME OF THE MSE STUDENTS THAT MAGNET SCHOOL STUDENTS WANTED TO DO PE AND HEALTH DURING THE SUMMER.

WE HAD THEM DO ONLINE COURSEWORK, BUT WE ALSO HAD THEM DO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY WERE OUT AND MOVING.

WE CONTINUE TO USE EDGE ANNUITY FOR BOTH SUMMER SCHOOL AND FOR CCA, AND WE'VE BEEN REALLY PLEASED WITH THE DATA THAT WE'VE SEEN COMING OUT OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE WORKED THROUGH EDGE ANNUITY.

THEN ALSO THE EQUITY COACHES WERE THE CORE OF OUR SUMMER SCHOOL TEAM AND SO OUR MIDDLE-SCHOOL EQUITY COACH IS GOING TO COME UP IN A BIT.

THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB REALLY SUPPORTING THE TEACHERS, TRAINING THEM, AND JUST DIFFERENT PEDAGOGICAL THINGS.

ESPECIALLY THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAM REALLY FOCUSED ON STUDENTS' SUCCESS AND AGENCY.

DID A GREAT JOB AND THEN AN ELEMENTARY LITERACY FOCUS.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT AS I LISTENED TO THE TEACHERS, I THINK THE THING THAT WE KNOW TO BE TRUE IS THAT WE REALLY NEED TO WORK ON OUR IDENTIFICATION PROCESS EARLIER.

BUT ANOTHER ACRONYM HERE, BUT WE TRIED TO USE THE END-OF-THE-YEAR ASSESSMENT TO TRY AND GET THE BEST PICTURE OF THE STUDENTS WHO WOULD HAVE THE MOST NEED.

BUT THEN WHAT HAPPENED WAS THAT ENDED IN MAY AND THEN TO IDENTIFY THE 300 OR SO KIDS, IT WAS JUST A LOT OF WORK TO COORDINATE ALL THOSE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS, GET ALL THE NAMES TO EVERYBODY.

I THINK WE'RE GOING TO START THIS NEXT SUMMER SCHOOL WITH WORKING ON THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR ASSESSMENT, WHICH WILL GIVE US AN IDEA FROM FALL TO MIDDLE OF THE YEAR, AND WE'LL USE THAT MIDDLE OF THE YEAR DATA IN JANUARY TO START BUILDING OUR SUMMER SCHOOL ROSTERS SO THAT WE CAN GET EVERYBODY ON BOARD BECAUSE ESPECIALLY WITH TRANSPORTATION AND GOING AROUND TRYING TO PICK [NOISE] UP ALL THE KIDS, THAT WAS A LOT FOR THEM.

WE'RE TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO HAVE ACCESS TO SKYWARD.

BUT THE HARD PART ABOUT THAT IS THAT THEY COME FROM ALL THE SCHOOLS IN CANVAS.

THEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER, THEY TURN OFF SKYWARD FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, AND IF YOU ROLL THE KIDS UP.

IF YOU'RE 7TH GRADER, THAT'S WHEN THEY PUSH THOSE BUTTONS AND URINATE HERE.

IT'S REALLY HARD TO GET THAT FIGURED OUT, BUT WE HAVE AN AMAZING TECHNOLOGY TEAM AND WE WILL WORK ON THAT.

THEN I THINK THE OTHER THING IS THAT I FOCUS A LOT OF SUPPORT STAFF INTO THE CLASSROOM, WHICH IS SUPER IMPORTANT.

BUT WE ALSO ENDED UP MEETING SOMEBODY TO ANSWER THE PHONE FOR ATTENDANCE AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

I THINK THAT'S ONE THING I'LL DO NEXT SUMMER.

THE OTHER THING I NOTICED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM IS TO HAVE DRESS CODE AND BATHROOM POLICIES ON DAY ONE.

SUMMER SCHOOL CREW THAN WHAT WE HAD LAST YEAR, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO ADDRESS THE THINGS THAT CAME UP, BUT NEXT YEAR WE'LL START OFF WITH THAT IN [INAUDIBLE]. SO FROM A BUDGET STANDPOINT, THE PIECES THAT CAME TOGETHER TO MAKE SUMMER SCHOOL HAPPEN, WE HAD $140,000 GRANT FOR UNFINISHED LEARNING FROM THE STATE, AND WE DO HAVE ONE MORE YEAR OF THAT.

WE ALSO HAD THE BARTON FAMILY GRANT THAT DIANNE [INAUDIBLE] WAS ABLE TO GET, AND SO THAT HELPED WITH SUPPLIES AND CURRICULUM.

THEN ALSO JASON WAS GENEROUS WITH US AND GAVE US 40 OR 50,000 OUT OF THE GENERAL FUND TO JUST SHORE IT UP SO THAT WE COULD OFFER A FULL PROGRAM.

THE TOTAL COST FOR SUMMER SCHOOL THIS YEAR WAS AROUND 230,000.

THE REASON THAT I'M GOING OVER THIS IS LONG-RANGE PLANNING WE HAVE ONE MORE YEAR WITH THE ALE GRANT, AND THEN AFTER THAT, WE DON'T HAVE ANY MORE OF THE UNFINISHED LEARNING OR THE SR FUNDS AS THEY'RE CALLED.

BEYOND THAT, THE HIGH-SCHOOL A SUSTAINABLE BECAUSE WE DO COLLECT TUITION AND TUITION WE COLLECTED COVER THE COST FOR HIGH SCHOOL.

BUT SINCE WE'RE WORKING WITH K3, 8 STUDENTS THAT NEED A BOOST BETWEEN SCHOOL YEARS, DON'T REALLY FEEL OUR GENE TUITION WOULD BE A GOOD SOLUTION THERE.

SO THEN WHAT WE WOULD BE LOOKING AT IS WE ALREADY PUT IN 40,000 SOMEWHERE AROUND 130,000 TO OFFER CONTINUE OFF IN FULL SUMMER PROGRAM.

SO AS YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT BUDGET, THAT'S JUST SOMETHING TO CONSIDER IF WE WANT TO CONTINUE HAVING THE FULL K3-12 BECAUSE I DO THINK THAT WE COULD MANAGE TO KEEP A NINE THROUGH 12 PROGRAMS GOING WITHOUT.

AND ALSO IT'S A GREAT HELP WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THOSE LEARNING GAPS AND SUMMER REALLY HELPS TO TIGHTEN SOME OF THOSE UP FOR US.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE GOING TO DO IS ASK OUR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO LOOK AT THAT AS A PROJECT, TO LOOK AT PROGRAMS STATEWIDE, NATIONWIDE, GLOBALLY ON WHAT WE'RE DOING, WHAT GRANTS ARE OUT THERE, WHAT PROGRAMS ARE OUT THERE SO THAT DOESN'T BREAK THE BANK, BUT YEAH WE CAN STILL HAVE SOME OFFERINGS.

TO DAN'S POINT THAT MAYBE OUR TUITION BASED, BUT MAYBE SOME ARE NOT, OR MAYBE THERE'S A HYBRID MODEL OUT THERE BECAUSE WE KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE A BIG ASK FROM OUR COMMUNITY BUT I THINK IT'S THE RIGHT ASK IF WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN.

SO OUR FOCUS WAS ON LITERACY AND SO WE USE THE SCIENCE OF READING CURRICULUM, AGAIN.

THAT'S REALLY WHERE YOU START SEEING THE PURPOSE OR THE "WHY" BECAUSE WHEN YOU START SEEING THE STUDENTS MAKING THESE IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL GAINS THAT WILL HELP THEM IN THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR.

THEN THE BOOK MOBIUS IS A BIG PART OF SUMMER SCHOOL AS WELL.

I THINK IT'S EVERY WEDNESDAY THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER, SO THERE'S 10 OR 12 STOPS, AND THERE'S USUALLY 100 STUDENTS AT EACH STOP.

IT'S A GREAT WAY TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN LITERACY, AND WHAT I THINK IS REALLY SPECIAL IS THE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS WOULD SHOW UP AND DO COMMUNITY READING, WHICH WAS REALLY FUN.

YOU'VE GOT A COUPLE OF THE PRINCIPALS THERE, AND JENN PUTS A LOT OF WORK AND THEN MAKING SURE THAT THIS HAPPENS, AND EVEN DR. JOHN SHOWED UP SO ONE OF THE READINGS AND DID SOME READING.

IT'S A GREAT WAY AND WE HAD STUDENTS CHECKING OUT QUITE A FEW BOOKS.

WE HAD FOUR ADULTS WITH A NUMBER OF MIDDLE SCHOOLERS AND LIKE IT SAYS IN THERE, WE HAD A RISING FIFTH GRADER, 19 RISING SIXTH GRADERS, 11 RISING SEVENTH GRADERS, EIGHT STUDENTS WITH IEPS AND FOUR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS IN OUR MIX OF KIDDOS.

THEN WE HAD TIME EVERY DAY FOR A SECTION OF ELA ENRICHMENT AND A SECTION FOR MATH ENRICHMENT BREAKS AND THEN A STEM OR STEAM CHALLENGE, WE HAD TWO OVER THAT AND THEN AN OPTIMISTIC CLOSE THAT WOULD LEAD INTO THE NEXT DAY.

WITH OUR PROGRAM THIS YEAR, WE WANTED TO PROVIDE TIME FOR STUDENTS TO BE WITH ONE ANOTHER AND GET SOME FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS.

PRACTICE WITH BEING MIDDLE SCHOOLERS IN MATH, WITH REAL-WORLD MATH AND FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS, ALONG WITH IN READING, READING, FLUENCY.

THEN THE STEM PROJECTS TO BUILD IN WITH THE SEL BENCHMARKS FOR STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, SELF-MANAGEMENT, AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT AS WELL AND GIVE THEM A SCAFFOLD THAT.

WE HAD TO STEM PROJECTS.

WE WORKED ON THE STL BENCHMARKS THROUGH MINI-PROJECT CALLED LEARNED HELPLESSNESS VERSUS AGENCY IN RECOGNIZING, ESPECIALLY, COMING OUT OF PANDEMIC, THOSE MOMENTS OF FEELING HELPLESS [NOISE] AND THAT YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE A LOT OF AGENCY IDENTIFYING WHERE YOU DO HAVE AGENCY, WHETHER IT'S IN YOUR MINDSET OR HOW YOU ASK FOR HELP OR ENGAGE.

IN THE MIDDLE THERE, WE DID A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT WALKING FIELD TRIPS.

WE DID ONE DOWN TO SAFEWAY AND THE STUDENTS WERE IN MATH THEMES AND THEY HAD $20 TO PLAN A ROAD TRIP.

WITH THAT, THEY HAD TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER AND ITEMS IN THE STORE FOR THE LENGTH OF THE TRIP AND HOW DO WE FEED AND PROVIDE LIQUIDS FOR EVERYONE IN THE VEHICLE FOR THAT TRIP AND SO THEY GOT TO MANAGE THAT.

I WAS AT ONE OF THE DOORS MONITORING HOW THEY WERE FINISHING AND WORKING AT DIFFERENT TIMES AND A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAME UP AND ASKED WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND I WISH I WOULD HAVE HAD SOME MONEY MANAGEMENT PRACTICE WHEN I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT'S AWESOME.

GREAT FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY WHEN WE WERE OUT IN IT.

THERE'S A WHOLE VARIETY OF THINGS THAT BRING THESE KIDS TO US, BUT MOST OF THE KIDS THAT COME IN TO US IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM, BIG SEL ISSUES AND IT HAS TO DO WITH NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL ONES.

THE FIRST DAY, KEN AND I COULD TELL THERE WAS NO CHANCE THAT WE COULD DO ANY BEGINNING ASSESSMENTS BECAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCH MATH HERE.

SUDDENLY THE PLAYING FIELD BECAME A MUCH MORE RELAXED ATMOSPHERE AND YOU HAD THESE TEACHERS THAT WERE SAYING, HEY, IT MAY BE HARD NOW KEEP PRACTICING.

YOU'RE GOING TO GET BETTER AT IT AND GETTING THEM TO CHANGE THEIR ATTITUDE FROM WHAT THEIR ABILITY IS VERSUS WHAT THEIR EFFORTS.

WHICH IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IF YOU READ UP ON ASIAN STUDENTS THAT ARE ALWAYS SCORING REALLY HIGH, THEIR BACKGROUND COMES FROM EFFORTS, NOT ABILITY, THAT FULL GROWTH MINDSET PART.

WE SAW TREMENDOUS GROWTH, MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T COMPETING WITH THEIR PEERS.

WE SAW THEM GROW TO DEVELOP REALLY GOOD FRIENDSHIPS IN A VERY SHORT TIME, AND THEY WERE TRYING.

THEY WERE REALLY TRYING AND THAT WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE.

YOU CAN'T PUT A NUMBER ON THAT AND I REALLY WISH TO FOOT SO THAT YOU CAN SEE THE GROWTH IN THEM.

OUR ONE STUDENT THAT CAME FROM UKRAINE, HE CAME WITH NO ENGLISH WHATSOEVER AND WE DID DO RUNNING RECORDS ON HIM.

I STARTED TRANSLATING THEM INTO SPANISH AND RUSSIAN AS WELL, AND THOSE ARE POSTED ONLINE AND I WORKED WITH THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION TEAMS IF THEY WANT ANY PRINTED COPIES.

I ALSO ADDED A V SYMBOL TO NOTATE ANY VEGETARIAN OPTIONS TO HELP THOSE WHO ARE VEGETARIAN PLAN A LITTLE BIT MORE ACCORDINGLY.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE CHANGED THIS YEAR IS EVERY LEVEL HAS A VEGETARIAN OPTION EVERY SINGLE DAY AT EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL.

NO MATTER WHAT, VEGETARIANS ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT AND WE'RE EXPANDING THAT AND TRYING TO WORK TOWARDS GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE AS WELL SO HOPEFULLY THAT WILL GET GOING DOWN THE ROAD AS WELL.

SALAD BARS, YOU BROUGHT BACK A LOT OF OUR SALAD BARS.

THIS WAS A REALLY BIG HIT WITH THE KIDS.

WE ADD A LARGE AMOUNT OF TURNOVER LAST YEAR.

WE HAD A LOT OF NEW STAFF MEMBERS WHO HAD NEVER WORKED WITH SALAD BARS BEFORE AND THEY WERE TERRIFIED OF IT.

THEY WERE LIKE THE KIDS AREN'T GOING TO GET IT.

THEY'RE GOING TO BE CONFUSED.

I WAS LIKE, NO, THESE KIDS ARE SMART.

I CHECKED IN WITH EVERYONE ON CAMPUS, THE FIRST DAY WAS SALAD VARGA.

IF I COULDN'T MAKE IT TO THAT SCHOOL THAT DAY AND THEY'RE LIKE, THESE KIDS, THEY DID IT AND I'M LIKE, I KNOW YOU GOT TO GIVE THESE KIDS A CHANCE BECAUSE THEY'LL SURPRISE YOU.

THE BIG HIT WITH THE KIDS ALLOWED US TO OFFER SOME MORE VARIETY AS WELL.

WE'RE GOING TO START TO EAT THESE SALAD BAR A FEW WEEKS SO WE'RE GOING TO FEATURE A DIFFERENT LETTER OF THE ALPHABET FOR EACH FRUIT OR VEGETABLE.

WE HAD OUR FINE DINING EVENTS AT WOODBURN AND PRUNE HILL, THEY WERE PHENOMENAL SUCCESSES. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN.

NEXT YEAR I MADE THE COMMITMENT TO DO ALL SIX ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS SO HAYES.

DOROTHY FOX, THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME WE OPENED IT TO THE COMMUNITY.

I WANT TO SAY THE ONLY THING THAT WE REALLY WENT WRONG WAS THE WEATHER.

JASON AS WELL, WE WERE ABLE TO PRIORITIZE WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE AND WE'RE ABLE TO GET ALL THE SCHOOLS UP AND RUNNING SMOOTHLY.

WE ADDED SOME PEOPLE AT DISCOVERY AND ODYSSEY AND A CANVAS HIGH SCHOOL, WE ADDED AN INTERNAL FLOATERS SO SOMEONE TO BUMP AROUND AND HELP OUT ALL THIS PATIENTS, WHICH HAS BEEN A PHENOMENAL SUCCESS.

I'M ALSO A SODEXO EMPLOYEE AND WE WERE ABLE TO HIRE A SUPERVISOR UNDER SODEXO AS WELL, SO WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE MORE SUPPORT TO THE SCHOOLS, WHICH HAS BEEN FUN.

HER NAME IS MARY, SHE STARTED BACK IN JANUARY WITH US.

IT'S BEEN FUNNY BECAUSE I THINK LAST YEAR WAS HER BEGINNING OF THE YEAR.

THIS YEAR SHE CAME BACK AND I THINK IT WAS LIKE, OH, THE STAFF WAS LIKE, OH, YOU CAME BACK.

SHE'S JUST REALLY GOT IN THE SCHOOLS ESPECIALLY THIS YEAR AND GOT REALLY GOOD BONDING AND HELPING AND IT'S JUST BEEN A REALLY GOOD STARTUP WITH OUR OFFICE TEAM HERE AND BEING ABLE TO HELP IN THE SCHOOLS AS WELL.

ANOTHER THING I DID LAST YEAR WAS I OPENED UP A SERVSAFE CLASS.

I ALWAYS CALL IT THE FOOD HANDLERS CARD ON STEROIDS BECAUSE IT'S AN ALL DAY EIGHT-HOUR CLASS WITH A TEST AT THE END BECAUSE THIS ENOUGH EIGHT QUESTIONS.

I OPENED THAT TO EVERYONE, NOT JUST THE KITCHEN MANAGERS.

WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE 21 STAFF MEMBERS OF OURS PASS OUT OF THE 27 THAT SHOWED UP, THE ONES THAT DID NOT PASS.

IT WAS LOSS, IT WAS JUST PROBABLY TWO QUESTIONS THAT THEY MISS.

I'M HOPING TO OFFER THAT AGAIN NEXT PROBABLY FEBRUARY I'M THINKING OUR CLOSEST TRAINER FOR THAT PROGRAM IS IN PENDLETON, SO I HAVE TO WORK WITH HER SCHEDULE.

BUT IT WAS REALLY GOOD LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE STAFF AS WELL.

THEY'VE ALREADY ASKED ME WHEN ARE WE DOING THAT AGAIN BECAUSE THEY LIKED IT.

ALSO, I WANTED TO REALLY LAST YOUR REFOCUS ON SAFETY, AS YOU'LL SEE IN THE NEXT FEW SLIDES, ONE OF MY BIG STICKLERS IN SAFETY IS WEARING THE SAFETY SHOES.

I THINK WORKING IN KITCHENS, THERE'S SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR THINGS TO GET ON THE FLOOR AND GET IN THE WAY.

SINCE I'M VERY, WE'LL SAY INTENSE ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT THEY WEAR THEIR SAFETY SHOES, I THOUGHT IT WAS FAIR THAT SODEXO BUYS THEM FOR THEM.

I GAVE EVERYONE $100 CREDIT TO BUY SHOES.

SOME PEOPLE DID ONE PAIR OF SHOES AND PEOPLE DID TWO.

I'M OPENING THAT UP EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL YEAR AS WELL TO NEW EMPLOYEES.

I ACTUALLY HAD ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES OVER AT CHS RAVE ABOUT HER SHOES SO MUCH THAT I BOUGHT A PAIR BECAUSE SHE SOLD ME ON THEM.

SO THEY ARE ALL REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THEIR SHOES AND I STILL GOT, I CALL IT SHOEMAGEDDON GETTING UP HERE IN THE OFFICE BECAUSE THEY ALL COME HERE SO I CAN GIVE THEM OUT IN PERSON.

THAT'S BEEN A REALLY AWESOME FUN TREAT AND THEY'VE REALLY ENJOYED AND BEEN SURPRISED BY THAT, SO IT'S GREAT.

SPEAKING ON SAFETY, I HAVE PARTNERED WITH CINTAS LAST YEAR.

THEY CAME IN AND INSTALLED ALL THESE FIRST AID KITS IN ALL THE SCHOOLS.

THEY COME BACK ONCE A MONTH TO RESTOCK EVERYTHING SO THAT THERE'S ALWAYS FULL FIRST AID CABINETS IN ALL OF OUR KITCHENS, AND THE STAFF KNOW IF WE'RE RUNNING LOW ON SOMETHING AND SOMETHING HAPPENS, WE CAN GET AN OFF-LABEL DELIVERY THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM.

THE DAY AFTER THIS ONE WAS INSTALLED, THAT WOULD BURN WAS OUR FINE DINING EVENT WHERE I BURNT MYSELF.

I THINK I WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST PERSON TO USE THE FIRST AID KITS.

THEY HAVE NOT LET ME FORGET AT ALL [LAUGHTER] I'M ALWAYS ASKING THEM ABOUT THE BURN CREAM AND THE BURN GEL, THEY'RE LIKE, "OH YEAH, WE HAVE IT FOR YOU" AND I'M LIKE, "OH, FOR ME. PERFECT. THANK YOU." THIS HAS BEEN AN AWESOME THING THAT THE STAFF WERE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT HAVING EVERYTHING AVAILABLE AND STOCKED 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME.

ANOTHER THING WE DID WAS RE-UPDATE ALL OF OUR SAFETY SHEETS AND WHATNOT.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I HOPE THE STAFF NEVER HAVE TO USE, BUT IF THEY GET SOME EXPOSURE TO SOME CHEMICALS IN THE KITCHEN, THEN WE HAVE A WHOLE SHEET OF WHAT TO DO AND WHO TO CALL AND WHATNOT AND THEY CAN TAKE IT OUT TO THE DOCTOR.

I'VE ONLY USED THIS ONCE IN MY CAREER AND IT'S BEEN ABOUT 10 YEARS.

I'M HOPING THAT WAS THE ONCE AND ONLY TIME.

BUT JUST GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS OF SAFETY, ESPECIALLY WITH THE MAJORITY OF NEW STAFF WE'VE HAD IN THE LAST YEAR AND GOING INTO THIS YEAR.

WE'VE BEEN DOING THAT AND THE KIDS HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN NOTICING BECAUSE [LAUGHTER] ONE WENT OUT WITH A TYPO THAT NO ONE CAUGHT AND EVERY SINGLE KID MENTIONED THAT TYPO, WHICH I LIKE TO TURN IT AROUND AND BE LIKE, "YEAH, YOU WON THE CHALLENGE OF FINDING THE TYPO." THANKS FOR CALLING US OUT.

THAT IS BASICALLY A CONCEPT WHERE THE KITCHEN STAFF GOES INTO THE CLASSROOM.
